Morgan StanleySource: Bloomberg

Investors should avoid the temptation to buy the dips in expensive high-growth stocks because āonce the fever breaks, it lasts a long time,ā according to Andrew Slimmon, senior portfolio manager at Morgan Stanley Investment Management.

Slimmon joined the āWhat Goes Upā podcast to discuss what heās investing in these days. He also explains how the MSIF U.S. Core Portfolio fund he co-manages beat the S&P 500 with a 36% gain in 2021. Below are the condensed and lightly edited highlights of the conversation.

Q. You wrote to us before the show, saying āavoid the temptation to step in and buy into the selloff in high-growth stocks.ā You said, āmy experience is: Once the fever breaks, itās done for quite a while.ā Historically, is there any precedent you could point to? Is it too simple to point to the dot-com bubble as a fair comparison?

A. So first of all, I just want to make sure itās understood: Iām not a value manager, or a growth manager. Iām not trying to, you know, spin what works or what my investment philosophy is at all times. Iām just looking at what the fat pitch is. And as it pertains to this group, the reason why I believe once the fever breaks, it lasts a long time, is if you wind the clock back, if you look at some of these uber-growth funds back to where they were in early fall of 2020, that means a lot of people havenāt made money, right? Because they chased into them after they peaked.

And the reason why the dot-com analogy is correct is that that means that every time they start to go up, thereās someone that can get out even. And so thereās tremendous selling resistance at higher levels because so many people have lost money. And that to me is very similar to the dot-com bubble, and other bubbles. Once a very speculative bubble breaks, itās not a V bottom because thereās too many people looking to get out.

Q. So what cohort would you look at? Could you see the Nasdaq 100 going down as much as it did then, or more like aĀ Cathie Wood-typeĀ of fund?

A. Thatās the difference to 2000. In 2000, the Nasdaq had obscene prices. You also had some of these very big-cap tech stocks trading at triple-digit multiples. And when I look at these uber-growth stocks, theyāre expensive as they were in 2000, but the main tech stocks, the Nasdaq 100, the big stocks, theyāre not as expensive. So I donāt think the (comparison to the) Nasdaq break of 2000 is quite accurate because I donāt think the really big tech stocks are as vulnerable.

Q. One thing I always think about along these lines is that thereās something in human nature that is always going to make that instinct to chase the high flyers come back at some point.

A. Greed.

Q. Yeah, right. As simple as that. But what are the conditions you would look for to be in place to bring that trade back?

A. Well, I think itās first seller exhaustion, where stocks stop going down on bad news because thereās no one left to sell them. And Iām just not sure weāre there yet. I havenāt seen big capitulation. I mean, the stocks are down a lot, but there hasnāt been big capitulation in these stocks. The other way I think about it is when no one believes that they can buy the dip anymore. Thatās when the bottom happens, right? When people say, āI donāt wanna touch them. These are uninvestible,ā thatās when I get interested. But when people are saying, āHey, well, what do you think?ā Because the memory of making a lot of money is too recent and that leads people to try to bottom fish.

Iāve been in this business a long time. Human behavior doesnāt change. And so when this type of bubble breaks, you get counter-trend rallies and they go up a little bit and then they go down low and then they go up and they go down until people say, āDonāt ask me one more thing about it. I donāt want to talk about it. Moving on.ā And then I go, āOh, thatās kind of interesting.ā That means maybe theyāre getting to a bottom.

Q. Your fund was up 36% last year. Everybody at home is wondering what exactly you might be favoring this year and how they should be positioning as the year unfolds?

A. The reason why we had a good year last year is simply that we played the playbook. The playbook is that when youāre coming out of recessions, cyclical stocks do well, right? Because in recessions people sell anything thatās economically sensitive and they hold on to things that they perceive as not economically sensitive. So the spread between the cyclical stocks and the non-cyclical stocks, itās extreme. And boy oh boy did it really get extreme. So it was kind of a fat pitch to own financials and energy stocks in 2021. And so that worked. The other thing that really worked is just listening to companies and follow earnings. Now, just to be clear, earnings growth doesnāt drive stock prices, itās surprises, right? A stock price embeds all future expectations. So if companies are doing better than what is expected, they go up ...

So going into this year, I think weāre in an environment where central bank policy is willing to accept higher levels of inflation for faster growth that will lead to more wage growth. Now right now, the Fed is starting to pivot a little bit because real wages arenāt going up. So I think theyāre going to make a move to bring down inflation, but I think weāre moving into an environment where weāre going to have higher growth at the expense of higher inflation. And thatās an environment where you want to own some value stocks. Again, Iām not saying throw away all your growth stocks to buy all value because I believe in technology long term. But I do think that weāve come out of a decade of slow growth and weāre moving into a faster-growth environment. And I think you want to own a few more value stocks. And I donāt think this year will be any different than last year.

Q. You sent us a list of some stocks that you really like: Alphabet, Microsoft and Danaher. Could you walk us through why you like these picks in particular?

A. Our biggest overweights are financials, REITs and energy stocks. The āhoweverā of that is those stocks are red-hot right now. Financials and energy have done really well this year. So I think weāre into an environment where you have to be careful going into earning season, given how strong theyāve been. And so Iām just a little bit wary of owning those stocks or buying those stocks right here. And again, those growth stocks havenāt done as well. Microsoft, Google, Danaher, they havenāt done as well because theyāre not hot stocks right now. And those companies are reporting very good earnings.

Q. Youāre bullish on Microsoft, you have it in both theĀ internationalĀ and theĀ U.S. core fund. Curious what you think of this Activision Blizzard takeover this week? And what does that signal to you?

A. Itās a sign that companies are flush with cash, which, oh, by the way, whatās the ROI on cash right now? So I think itās going to be a -- Iām no investment banker -- but I think itās going to be a big year for M&A because companies have very strong balance sheets and they got a lot of cash on hand and theyāre going to be looking for bolt-on acquisitions. So to the extent that things are immediately accretive, I think youāre going to see companies jump at it.

And not a lot of people talk about that, but I really think that the story is that corporate fundamentals are not getting the press they deserve. I really do. We talk about the Fed a lot and geopolitical risk, but I just donāt think whatās happening in corporate America gets enough positive press.

","source":"lsy1584095487587","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Morgan Stanleyās Slimmon Warns Against Buying Growth-Stock Dip
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nMorgan Stanleyās Slimmon Warns Against Buying Growth-Stock Dip\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-24 07:25 GMT+8 Bloomberg\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
āOnce the fever breaks, it lasts a long time,ā manager saysWhen bubble breaks, itās not V bottom as many look to get outAndrew Slimmon, Source: Morgan StanleySource: BloombergInvestors should avoid ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{".DJI":"éē¼ęÆ",".SPX":"S&P 500 Index",".IXIC":"NASDAQ Composite"},"source_url":"https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-01-22/morgan-stanley-s-slimmon-warns-against-buying-growth-stock-dip","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1110124323","content_text":"āOnce the fever breaks, it lasts a long time,ā manager saysWhen bubble breaks, itās not V bottom as many look to get outAndrew Slimmon, Source: Morgan StanleySource: BloombergInvestors should avoid the temptation to buy the dips in expensive high-growth stocks because āonce the fever breaks, it lasts a long time,ā according to Andrew Slimmon, senior portfolio manager at Morgan Stanley Investment Management.Slimmon joined the āWhat Goes Upā podcast to discuss what heās investing in these days. Now, just to be clear, earnings growth doesnāt drive stock prices, itās surprises, right? A stock price embeds all future expectations. So if companies are doing better than what is expected, they go up ...So going into this year, I think weāre in an environment where central bank policy is willing to accept higher levels of inflation for faster growth that will lead to more wage growth. And I donāt think this year will be any different than last year.Q. You sent us a list of some stocks that you really like: Alphabet, Microsoft and Danaher. Could you walk us through why you like these picks in particular?A. And those companies are reporting very good earnings.Q. Youāre bullish on Microsoft, you have it in both theĀ internationalĀ and theĀ U.S. core fund. Curious what you think of this Activision Blizzard takeover this week? And what does that signal to you?A. So to the extent that things are immediately accretive, I think youāre going to see companies jump at it.And not a lot of people talk about that, but I really think that the story is that corporate fundamentals are not getting the press they deserve. I really do. We talk about the Fed a lot and geopolitical risk, but I just donāt think whatās happening in corporate America gets enough positive press.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":494,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":9091167153,"gmtCreate":1643808884985,"gmtModify":1676533858399,"author":{"id":"4104903028207320","authorId":"4104903028207320","name":"Teoh9130","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/9aa946c6972368c01a6b6f667cbf21b7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4104903028207320","authorIdStr":"4104903028207320"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$AMD(AMD)$Chinese Lunar Year 1st Profilš","listText":"$AMD(AMD)$Chinese Lunar Year 1st Profilš","text":"$AMD(AMD)$Chinese Lunar Year 1st Profilš","images":[{"img":"https://static.itradeup.com/news/0ab72d0abeeea475fa62d50c2caa1e6c","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9091167153","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":520,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9919884333,"gmtCreate":1663772591422,"gmtModify":1676537333616,"author":{"id":"4104903028207320","authorId":"4104903028207320","name":"Teoh9130","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/9aa946c6972368c01a6b6f667cbf21b7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4104903028207320","authorIdStr":"4104903028207320"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good ","listText":"Good ","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9919884333","repostId":"1186301074","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1186301074","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1663773262,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1186301074?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-09-21 23:14","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Can The Fed's Decision Lead To A Short-Term Rally?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1186301074","media":"Benzinga","summary":"Volatility is scarce in the crypto market, withĀ BitcoinĀ hovering around $19,000, but extreme volatil","content":"

Volatility is scarce in the crypto market, withĀ BitcoinĀ hovering around $19,000, but extreme volatility is due today. E-commerce giant Shopify completed a 10-for-1 split of its common stock on June 28. Then, the parent company of Google, Alphabet, wrapped up a 20-for-1 stock split on July 15.

Now, Tesla is back in the spotlight after completing a 5-for-1 stock split in 2020. The electric vehicle maker hinted at a stock split earlier this year, and now the big day is taking place this month. If you haven't been following Tesla this year, here's a look at the company's stock-split timeline.

March 28, 2022: Tesla informed the SEC about its stock-split intentions via Form 8-K.

June 6, 2022: If you were a shareholder as of close of business on this date, you received an invitation to Tesla's annual shareholders meeting.

June 10, 2022: Tesla filed another form with the SEC, announcing a proposed 3-for-1 stock split.

Aug. 4, 2022: Shareholders voted in favor of the 3-for-1 stock split at the 2022 Annual Meeting of Shareholders.

Aug. 17, 2022: Stockholders of record on this date will receive two new shares for every one share they own.

Aug. 24, 2022: The stock split will take place after the close of trading on this date.

Aug. 25, 2022: Tesla shares will trade at a split-adjusted price on this date.

As you can see, a stock split doesn't happen overnight. A company needs to file paperwork with the SEC to express its intentions, and then shareholders must give the company the green light to move forward with the stock split.

What happens when a stock splits?

A stock split may be popular, but that doesn't mean it's profitable. A stock split in itself won't make a company's market capitalization rise or change its intrinsic value. But it does increase the number of a company's outstanding shares. You'll notice more shares of a company stock in your account, but the overall value of your shares won't change. That's why a stock split is not a taxable event in itself. It doesn't leave you with more money in your pockets.

Let's dive into Tesla's stock split. The company is doing a 3-for-1 split. That means investors will receive two extra shares of Tesla for every one share they own.

If you own five shares of Tesla, you'll wake up to 15 shares of the company after the stock split. If you own 10 shares of Tesla, you'll have 30 shares later. If you own fractional shares, you'll still have a chance to participate in the stock split. You'll just have to do the math to see how your fractional shares will multiply after the stock split.

You can think of a stock split like getting slices of pizza. If you have a whole pizza, you can slice it into three equal parts like a 3-for-1 stock split. The amount of pizza you have is still the same. When you slice it, you break it up into bite-sized pieces so it's easier to consume.

A stock split makes it easier for investors to buy whole shares of a company stock by lowering the price tag. If shares of Tesla stock are $900 before the stock split, the shares will drop to $300 after the 3-for-1 stock split.

Is a stock split a positive sign for a company?

A stock split helps make a stock with a high price tag more affordable to retail investors. But that's not a big deal in this era since many investors can get their hands on stocks by purchasing fractional shares. However, there are some investors who like the idea of grabbing a whole share of Tesla without breaking the bank. Stock splits open the doors for more investors to accumulate whole shares of a company stock in their portfolio.

Although stock splits sound fancy, they are more of a cosmetic change. Amazon pursued its first stock split since the dot-com boom, completing a 20-for-1 stock split on June 3. E-commerce giant Shopify completed a 10-for-1 split of its common stock on June 28. Then, the parent company of Google, Alphabet, wrapped up a 20-for-1 stock split on July 15.Now, Tesla is back in the spotlight after completing a 5-for-1 stock split in 2020. The electric vehicle maker hinted at a stock split earlier this year, and now the big day is taking place this month. If you haven't been following Tesla this year, here's a look at the company's stock-split timeline.March 28, 2022: Tesla informed the SEC about its stock-split intentions via Form 8-K.June 6, 2022: If you were a shareholder as of close of business on this date, you received an invitation to Tesla's annual shareholders meeting.June 10, 2022: Tesla filed another form with the SEC, announcing a proposed 3-for-1 stock split.Aug. 4, 2022: Shareholders voted in favor of the 3-for-1 stock split at the 2022 Annual Meeting of Shareholders.Aug. 17, 2022: Stockholders of record on this date will receive two new shares for every one share they own.Aug. 24, 2022: The stock split will take place after the close of trading on this date.Aug. 25, 2022: Tesla shares will trade at a split-adjusted price on this date.As you can see, a stock split doesn't happen overnight. A company needs to file paperwork with the SEC to express its intentions, and then shareholders must give the company the green light to move forward with the stock split. What happens when a stock splits?A stock split may be popular, but that doesn't mean it's profitable. A stock split in itself won't make a company's market capitalization rise or change its intrinsic value. But it does increase the number of a company's outstanding shares. You'll notice more shares of a company stock in your account, but the overall value of your shares won't change. That's why a stock split is not a taxable event in itself. It doesn't leave you with more money in your pockets.Let's dive into Tesla's stock split. The company is doing a 3-for-1 split. That means investors will receive two extra shares of Tesla for every one share they own.If you own five shares of Tesla, you'll wake up to 15 shares of the company after the stock split. When you slice it, you break it up into bite-sized pieces so it's easier to consume.A stock split makes it easier for investors to buy whole shares of a company stock by lowering the price tag. If shares of Tesla stock are $900 before the stock split, the shares will drop to $300 after the 3-for-1 stock split. Is a stock split a positive sign for a company?A stock split helps make a stock with a high price tag more affordable to retail investors. But that's not a big deal in this era since many investors can get their hands on stocks by purchasing fractional shares. However, there are some investors who like the idea of grabbing a whole share of Tesla without breaking the bank. Stock splits open the doors for more investors to accumulate whole shares of a company stock in their portfolio.Although stock splits sound fancy, they are more of a cosmetic change. It doesn't determine the long-term potential of a company. Don't fall into the trap of believing that stock splits automatically lead to profitability. Do your research before you invest in any stock -- even if the company has a stock split coming up. Review the fundamentals, evaluate management's leadership style, and do a competitor analysis to see if a company deserves a spot in your portfolio.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":385,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9091196694,"gmtCreate":1643794950034,"gmtModify":1676533857297,"author":{"id":"4104903028207320","authorId":"4104903028207320","name":"Teoh9130","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/9aa946c6972368c01a6b6f667cbf21b7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4104903028207320","authorIdStr":"4104903028207320"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9091196694","repostId":"1125051535","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":257,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9013015060,"gmtCreate":1648652545488,"gmtModify":1676534372150,"author":{"id":"4104903028207320","authorId":"4104903028207320","name":"Teoh9130","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/9aa946c6972368c01a6b6f667cbf21b7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4104903028207320","authorIdStr":"4104903028207320"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Marqeta, Inc.(MQ)$ Growth up","listText":"$Marqeta, Inc.(MQ)$ Growth up","text":"$Marqeta, Inc.(MQ)$ Growth up","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/c318c959c66f5002c79f34dd493dd1e6","width":"1080","height":"2067"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9013015060","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":495,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9091196584,"gmtCreate":1643794970031,"gmtModify":1676533857307,"author":{"id":"4104903028207320","authorId":"4104903028207320","name":"Teoh9130","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/9aa946c6972368c01a6b6f667cbf21b7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4104903028207320","authorIdStr":"4104903028207320"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice ","listText":"Nice ","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9091196584","repostId":"1125051535","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":367,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9902935600,"gmtCreate":1659624676403,"gmtModify":1705996215229,"author":{"id":"4104903028207320","authorId":"4104903028207320","name":"Teoh9130","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/9aa946c6972368c01a6b6f667cbf21b7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4104903028207320","authorIdStr":"4104903028207320"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Affirm Holdings, Inc.(AFRM)$Small..
