The Fed will also release its latest summary of economic projections on Wednesday, offering officials' forecasts for GDP growth, inflation, and future rate hikes.

Following last Friday's data on inflation, following last Friday's data on inflation, investors are now bracing for the potential of more aggressive interest rate increases from the Fed, perhaps as soon as this week.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell speaks at a news conference following a Federal Open Market Committee meeting on May 04, 2022 in Washington, DC.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' May Consumer Price Index (CPI) unexpectedly rose 8.6% in May, stoking worries on Wall Street that inflation has become more entrenched in the U.S. economy, potentially pushing Fed officials to take a more heavy-handed action in efforts to slow surging costs.

“The Fed's price stability resolve is going to be really tested now,” Principal Global Investors Chief Strategist Seema Shah said in a note. "Policy rate hikes will need to be relentlessly aggressive until inflation finally starts to fade, even if the economy is struggling."

This "relentlessly aggressive" stance could include raising interest rates by 0.75% on Wednesday, a move economists at Barclays said Friday is now their baseline expectation. "Historically, the US central bank has avoided surprising markets – say, by going 75bp when it is not priced in," Barclays economists led by Jonathan Millar said in a note to clients published Friday. "But next week, we feel, is likely to be an exception."

On a month-over-month basis, inflation climbed 1% in May, compared to 0.3% in April. "Core" inflation, which strips out the more volatile costs of food and gas, rose 6% over the prior year in May, more than the 5.9% that was expected.

Rising inflation and the potential for more aggressive action from the Fed weighed on financial markets last week.

The benchmark S&P 500 plunged 2.9% on Friday, rounding out its worst weekly performance since January and close just above 3,900 – the lowest level in three weeks.

The decline also brought yearly losses to 18%, putting investors back on watch for a close in bear market territory, or 20% below recent highs. The Dow wiped out 880 points, or 2.7%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 3.5% by the end of Friday's session.

“The CPI report is another reminder that equity markets will no longer be coddled by monetary policy,” Comerica Wealth Management Chief Investment Officer John Lynch said in a note.

This downturn has also spilled into the bond market. The U.S. 10-Year Treasury note is having its worst year on record, losing 12.8% so far, per data from Compound Advisors. The yield on the 10-year has more than doubled in 2022, from 1.52% at the start of the year to 3.16% as of Friday's close.

"A higher-than-expected CPI number seals the deal on investors’ fears," said Mike Loewengart, managing director of investment strategy at E*Trade. "And though consumers may be experiencing high prices in their day-to-day, especially at the pump, it's disappointing to see that we don’t have a lid on inflation yet, despite the Fed’s efforts."

In addition the Fed's announcement on Wednesday, investors will also keep a close eye on the latest retail sales report due out that same morning. The Commerce Department's data for May is expected to show retail sales rose 0.2% last month, a deceleration from April's 0.9% increase. Excluding autos and gas, the pace of retail sales likely slowed to 0.4% in May, compared to 1% the prior month.

“Spending growth ex of gas and groceries is showing signs of slowing across income groups,” economists at Bank of America said in a recent note. "The gap between three-year spending growth in states with high oil production and those with high gas prices has shrunk, suggesting that the pinch of inflation is being felt broadly.”

Also on the economic data front, traders will get another snapshot of the U.S. inflation picture this week from the Producer Price Index (PPI), set for release on Tuesday.

Economists surveyed by Bloomberg expect producer prices rose 0.8% in May compared to 0.5% during the prior month; on an annual basis, expectations are producer prices rose 10.8% in May, a deceleration from the 11% increase seen in April.

Corporate earnings reports are expected to be sparse in the week ahead, with results from Oracle (ORCL) on Monday and Kroger (KR) and Adobe (ADBE) on Thursday serving as the week's highlights.

Economic calendar

Monday: No notable reports scheduled for release.

Tuesday: NFIB Small Business Optimism, May (93.0 expected, 93.2 during prior month), PPI final demand, month-over-month, May (0.8% expected, 0.5% during prior month), PPI final demand, year-over-year, May (10.8% expected, 11.0% during prior month)

Wednesday: MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended June 10 (-6.5% during prior week), Empire Manufacturing, June (5.0 expected, -11.6 during prior month), Retail Sales Advance, month-over-month, May (0.2% expected, 0.9% during prior month), Retail Sales excluding autos and gas, month-over-month, May (0.4% expected, 1.0% during prior month), Import Price Index, month-over-month, May (1.2% expected, 0.0% during prior month), Import Price Index excluding petroleum, month-over-month, May (0.6% expected, 0.4% during prior month), Import Price Index, year-over-year, May (12% during prior month), Export Price Index, month-over-month, May (1.3% expected, 0.6% during prior month), Export Price Index, year-over-year, May (18.0% during prior month), Business Inventories, April (1.2% expected, 2.0% during prior month), NAHB Housing Market Index, June (68 expected, 69 during prior month), FOMC Rate Decision, lower bound, June 15 (1.25% expected, 0.75% prior), FOMC Rate Decision, higher bound, June 15 (1.50% expected, 1.00% prior), Interest on Reserve Balances Rate, June 16 (1.40% expected, 0.90% prior)

Thursday: Building Permits, May (1.790 million expected, 1.819 million during prior month, revised to 1.823 million), Building Permits, month-over-month, May (-1.8% expected, -3.2% during prior month, revised to -3.0%), Philadelphia Fed Business Outlook Index, June (6.0 expected, 2.6 during prior month), Initial jobless claims, week ended June 11 (215,000 expected, 229,000 during prior week)

Friday: Industrial Production, month-over-month, May (0.4% expected, 1.1% during prior month), Capacity Utilization, May (79.3% expected, 79.0% during prior month), Manufacturing (SIC) Production, May (0.2% expected, 0.8% during prior month), Leading Index, May (-0.4% expected -0.3% during prior month)

Earnings calendar

Monday

Before market open: No notable reports scheduled for release.

After market close: Oracle (ORCL)

Tuesday

Before market open: Core & Main (CNM)

After market close: Sprinklr (CXM)

Wednesday

Before market open: John Wiley (WLY)

After market close: No notable reports scheduled for release.

Thursday

Before market open: Kroger (KR), Jabil (JBL)

After market close: Adobe (ADBE)

Friday

Before market open: No notable reports scheduled for release.

After market close: No notable reports scheduled for release.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The Fed will also release its latest summary of economic projections on Wednesday, offering officials' forecasts for GDP growth, inflation, and future rate hikes.Following last Friday's data on inflation, following last Friday's data on inflation, investors are now bracing for the potential of more aggressive interest rate increases from the Fed, perhaps as soon as this week.Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell speaks at a news conference following a Federal Open Market Committee meeting on May 04, 2022 in Washington, DC.The Bureau of Labor Statistics' May Consumer Price Index (CPI) unexpectedly rose 8.6% in May, stoking worries on Wall Street that inflation has become more entrenched in the U.S. economy, potentially pushing Fed officials to take a more heavy-handed action in efforts to slow surging costs.“The Fed's price stability resolve is going to be really tested now,” Principal Global Investors Chief Strategist Seema Shah said in a note. \"Policy rate hikes will need to be relentlessly aggressive until inflation finally starts to fade, even if the economy is struggling.\"This \"relentlessly aggressive\" stance could include raising interest rates by 0.75% on Wednesday, a move economists at Barclays said Friday is now their baseline expectation. \"Historically, the US central bank has avoided surprising markets – say, by going 75bp when it is not priced in,\" Barclays economists led by Jonathan Millar said in a note to clients published Friday. \"But next week, we feel, is likely to be an exception.\"On a month-over-month basis, inflation climbed 1% in May, compared to 0.3% in April. \"Core\" inflation, which strips out the more volatile costs of food and gas, rose 6% over the prior year in May, more than the 5.9% that was expected.Rising inflation and the potential for more aggressive action from the Fed weighed on financial markets last week. The Dow wiped out 880 points, or 2.7%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 3.5% by the end of Friday's session.“The CPI report is another reminder that equity markets will no longer be coddled by monetary policy,” Comerica Wealth Management Chief Investment Officer John Lynch said in a note. This downturn has also spilled into the bond market. The U.S. 10-Year Treasury note is having its worst year on record, losing 12.8% so far, per data from Compound Advisors. The yield on the 10-year has more than doubled in 2022, from 1.52% at the start of the year to 3.16% as of Friday's close.\"A higher-than-expected CPI number seals the deal on investors’ fears,\" said Mike Loewengart, managing director of investment strategy at E*Trade. \"And though consumers may be experiencing high prices in their day-to-day, especially at the pump, it's disappointing to see that we don’t have a lid on inflation yet, despite the Fed’s efforts.\"In addition the Fed's announcement on Wednesday, investors will also keep a close eye on the latest retail sales report due out that same morning. The Commerce Department's data for May is expected to show retail sales rose 0.2% last month, a deceleration from April's 0.9% increase. Excluding autos and gas, the pace of retail sales likely slowed to 0.4% in May, compared to 1% the prior month.“Spending growth ex of gas and groceries is showing signs of slowing across income groups,” economists at Bank of America said in a recent note. \"The gap between three-year spending growth in states with high oil production and those with high gas prices has shrunk, suggesting that the pinch of inflation is being felt broadly.”Also on the economic data front, traders will get another snapshot of the U.S. inflation picture this week from the Producer Price Index (PPI), set for release on Tuesday.Economists surveyed by Bloomberg expect producer prices rose 0.8% in May compared to 0.5% during the prior month; In November, the U.S. Justice Department said it would sue Uber for charging wait-time fees to passengers with physical disabilities. In August, the regulator for taxis and hire vehicles in Australia’s New South Wales—home to Sydney—fined Uber and issued 13 improvement notices after a safety audit found concerns such as driver fatigue and passenger complaints.Uber has also faced penalties globally over issues including the classification of its drivers.Uber may have caused some Australian riders to decide not to cancel their trip after incorrectly receiving the warning, ACCC ChairwomanGina Cass-Gottliebsaid.In September, Uber amended its cancellation message for Australian services to tell riders they would not be charged if they sought to abandon a trip during the fee-free period, the ACCC said.In nearly two years through August 2020, Uber’s algorithm also falsely inflated the estimated cost of booking through its UberTaxi option so that the actual fare was “almost always” cheaper than the estimate displayed, the Australian regulator said.UberTaxi was introduced to Sydney in 2013 and discontinued in mid-2020, having been neither popular nor well promoted following the introduction of UberX in 2014, the company said.“UberTaxi trips have always been a small portion of trips on the platform in Sydney, regardless we apologize for this,” Uber said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":49,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9936844319,"gmtCreate":1662762242931,"gmtModify":1676537133136,"author":{"id":"4107598762977890","authorId":"4107598762977890","name":"Yh Phoo","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/200d1966e3a488567ce0c0a071cc5023","crmLevel":8,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4107598762977890","idStr":"4107598762977890"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9936844319","repostId":"1178809104","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1178809104","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1662734254,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1178809104?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-09-09 22:37","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Why Meta Platforms Can Outmuscle TikTok in the Long Term","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1178809104","media":"TipRanks","summary":"Story HighlightsMeta Platforms stock seems like it’s headed in the wrong direction as TikTok continu","content":"
\n
Story HighlightsMeta Platforms stock seems like it’s headed in the wrong direction as TikTok continues to pick up momentum. Regardless, Meta has shown that it’s more than capable of adapting to the times as the social-media landscape continuously changes.Shares of social-media and virtual-reality headset maker Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) have lost some appeal in recent years due to the rise of rivals like TikTok. Though TikTok is the biggest threat to Meta’s family of apps, I ultimately think Meta will come out on top in a few years. Undoubtedly, CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants you to look at his firm as a metaverse frontrunner and upbeat long-term (think 10 years) investment. Zuckerberg envisions more than one billion people in the metaverse and, with that, billions in digital goods sales (and, of course, ad revenues).Though the metaverse is full of potential, Meta will be losing billions, rather than making billions, for quite some time. At this juncture, it’s hard to tell when Meta’s metaverse efforts will pay off. I think it’s doubtful that the October 11 event will cause investors to look past the social-media business, which is doing what it can to keep up.Social media is still the primary reason to own shares of Meta Platforms. Facebook still seems like a more fitting name for the company, at least until metaverse initiatives can contribute to a larger slice of the Meta revenue pie. Many investors have looked right past the new facade to the social-media family of apps. It’s under considerable pressure, with Facebook’s userbase growth grinding to a halt.Through the eyes of Gen Z and Millennials, TikTok is the new place for cool kids to hang out. Still, it would be a mistake to discount the firm’s ability to outduel TikTok and any other competing social-media platform. With an unbeatable roster of some of the top social media platforms (think Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp), Meta has an ecosystem that could make for a more profitable business.I am bullish on Meta Platforms stock, even if skeptics think it should be cut from the FAANG cohort.Meta Platforms’ Family of Apps is an AdvantageIn a prior piece, I noted that Meta is more than able to adapt to Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) privacy updates, with its impressive trio in Whatsapp, Facebook, and Instagram. Though the inability to track certain users across the internet may be an expensive setback, I do view Apple’s update as more of a milder inconvenience to Meta in the grander scheme of things. There’s a considerable amount of data that Meta can collect within its own apps. Further, Meta can further integrate its family of apps to play better with one another and keep users engaged.Reels is a TikTok-like offering that’s included on Instagram and Facebook. With the inclusion of in-app browsers and numerous other offerings that could give users more reasons not to close their apps, Meta can collect an increasing amount of data on its user base. In due time, I don’t think it’s far-fetched to believe that Meta can power higher and move past the hole that Apple’s update kicked it in.For now, the short-form video trend will continue to give momentum to TikTok and Reels. In a few years, short-form video could go out of fashion, and it could be an augmented- or virtual-reality type of social-media experience that will be the hottest trend.Indeed, the social media business is subject to intense swoons based on what’s in fashion at any given time. Though Facebook may become a dinosaur in a few years (if it isn’t already), Meta has shown that it can stay on its toes with an offering of its own as new trends emerge. At the end of the day, you can’t really patent social or short-form video feeds. It’s the firm with the best network (of content creators and viewers) that will have the widest moat. With a strong family of apps, Meta can efficiently serve many of its users to the new hot thing without requiring them to download a new app. Right now, it’s Reels, but in a few years, a new hot app could be added to its family, and it may very well be an original Meta innovation. Is META Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?Turning to Wall Street, META stock comes in as a Moderate Buy. Out of 34 analyst ratings, there are 27 Buys, five Holds, and two Sells. The average Meta Platforms stock forecast is $224.15, implying an upside potential of 34.9%. Analyst price targets range from a low of $140.00 per share to a high of $466.00 per share. Conclusion: Things Can Turn Back in Meta’s FavorIt’s been a while since Meta delivered a game-changing original app. In any case, the firm has shown more than capable of creating its own version of a product (copying, if you will) if it fails to be a frontrunner. As Meta looks beyond short-form content to where the puck is going next, I’d look for the tables to turn back in Meta’s favor.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":13,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9993030881,"gmtCreate":1660606293445,"gmtModify":1676536361969,"author":{"id":"4107598762977890","authorId":"4107598762977890","name":"Yh
