China’s slowing economy, rising competition and attempts at entering new verticals haven’t always worked out as expected. Alibaba stock could be in trouble.</p><p>Trading at such discounted valuations, investors wonder whether now is a good time to scoop up Alibaba stock cheap or will they be catching a falling knife? Amid the gloom surrounding the online retailer there are rays of light. Let’s check out what’s good behind the stock, the bad and the downright ugly before rendering a decision.</p><h2 id=\"id_3637266253\">A Closer Look at Alibaba Stock</h2><p>Alibaba is the world’s largest e-commerce business in terms of gross merchandise value. Its Tmall and Taobao e-commerce platforms remain the company’s primary revenue and growth drivers.</p><p>They allow it to build out its cloud services business Alibaba Cloud while also supporting Alibaba’s global expansion efforts. </p><p>Internationally, the cross-border AliExpress unit enabled its International Digital Commerce Group to see a 44% increase in revenue to $4 billion. AliExpress itself saw 60% order growth.</p><p>The e-commerce giant also announced it would hike its share repurchase program by $25 billion, for a total of $35.3 billion through 2027. In the quarter ending March 2024, it bought $4.8 billion worth of Alibaba stock. That is the second largest share repurchase amount since going public. </p><h2 id=\"id_2213324251\">BABA Coughs and Stalls</h2><p>Still, Alibaba’s business is stalling. Alibaba’s gross merchandise volume was down for the year ending in March 2023, though through the first nine months of the current fiscal year GMV nominally improved.</p><p>It was forced to scrap its spinoff of its Cainiao logistics business. Instead, Alibaba will buy the remaining portion it doesn’t own. IPO conditions are not conducive and Alibaba needs to reinforce its e-commerce business to contend with the inroads its rivals made.</p><p>Efforts to enter new verticals while restructuring its business haven’t gone according to plan.</p><h2 id=\"id_1713443961\">Things Could Get Worse</h2><p>Competition is fierce and only growing more intense. Alibaba is losing market share to <strong>PDD Holdings</strong> (NASDAQ:<strong>PDD</strong>), the owner of the ubiquitous Temu website.</p><p>You can’t go anywhere without the deep discount website pushing some gadget at a crazy cheap price. It was the most downloaded iPhone app in 2023, blunting Alibaba’s own expansion efforts in the U.S.</p><p>Similarly, the short-form video platform Douyin from <strong>ByteDance</strong> is expanding exponentially in China. Douyin is essentially the TikTok platform for China minus all the vapid content the latter carries.</p><p>The video site is also a growing retail e-commerce platform and growing far faster than Alibaba, <strong>JD.com</strong> (NASDAQ:<strong>JD</strong>) or PDD’s Pinduoduo, according to eMarketer.</p><p>Douyin saw a 256% increase in GMV for local life services such as restaurants, local brick-and-mortar businesses and lifestyle activity providers last year.</p><p>Having to fight a battle on two fronts, Alibaba is losing but not all hope is lost. As meteoric as Temu’s rise has been, it is not sustainable. An analysis by <em>Wired</em> found PDD is losing $30 on every sale it makes.</p><p>China Merchants Securities also estimates Temu is losing $588 million to $954 million a year. Essentially PDD is subsidizing Temu’s early growth in a bid to win market share but it will have to cut back eventually and raise prices. Alibaba’s efforts are much more sensible and sustainable.</p><h2 id=\"id_2876214428\">The Verdict</h2><p>There is no question Alibaba stock looks attractive at 13 times trailing earnings, 8 times next year’s estimates with Wall Street forecasting long-term 10% compounded annual growth for earnings.</p><p>Yet operating income is tumbling and net profits plummeted 77% from the year-ago period. The e-commerce giant has plenty of cash on its balance sheet.</p><p>However, it will be using that to invest in its various growth efforts, and Alibaba hasn’t shown yet how it will effectively fight back against the competition.</p><p>For those reasons, I’d cautiously suggest buying only a small stake in BABA stock. You can always increase your purchase on any weakness. China’s slowing economy, rising competition and attempts at entering new verticals haven’t always worked out as expected. Alibaba stock could be in trouble.Trading at such discounted valuations, investors wonder whether now is a good time to scoop up Alibaba stock cheap or will they be catching a falling knife? Amid the gloom surrounding the online retailer there are rays of light. Let’s check out what’s good behind the stock, the bad and the downright ugly before rendering a decision.A Closer Look at Alibaba StockAlibaba is the world’s largest e-commerce business in terms of gross merchandise value. Its Tmall and Taobao e-commerce platforms remain the company’s primary revenue and growth drivers.They allow it to build out its cloud services business Alibaba Cloud while also supporting Alibaba’s global expansion efforts. Internationally, the cross-border AliExpress unit enabled its International Digital Commerce Group to see a 44% increase in revenue to $4 billion. AliExpress itself saw 60% order growth.The e-commerce giant also announced it would hike its share repurchase program by $25 billion, for a total of $35.3 billion through 2027. In the quarter ending March 2024, it bought $4.8 billion worth of Alibaba stock. That is the second largest share repurchase amount since going public. BABA Coughs and StallsStill, Alibaba’s business is stalling. Alibaba’s gross merchandise volume was down for the year ending in March 2023, though through the first nine months of the current fiscal year GMV nominally improved.It was forced to scrap its spinoff of its Cainiao logistics business. Instead, Alibaba will buy the remaining portion it doesn’t own. IPO conditions are not conducive and Alibaba needs to reinforce its e-commerce business to contend with the inroads its rivals made.Efforts to enter new verticals while restructuring its business haven’t gone according to plan.Things Could Get WorseCompetition is fierce and only growing more intense. Alibaba is losing market share to PDD Holdings (NASDAQ:PDD), the owner of the ubiquitous Temu website.You can’t go anywhere without the deep discount website pushing some gadget at a crazy cheap price. It was the most downloaded iPhone app in 2023, blunting Alibaba’s own expansion efforts in the U.S.Similarly, the short-form video platform Douyin from ByteDance is expanding exponentially in China. Douyin is essentially the TikTok platform for China minus all the vapid content the latter carries.The video site is also a growing retail e-commerce platform and growing far faster than Alibaba, JD.com (NASDAQ:JD) or PDD’s Pinduoduo, according to eMarketer.Douyin saw a 256% increase in GMV for local life services such as restaurants, local brick-and-mortar businesses and lifestyle activity providers last year.Having to fight a battle on two fronts, Alibaba is losing but not all hope is lost. As meteoric as Temu’s rise has been, it is not sustainable. An analysis by Wired found PDD is losing $30 on every sale it makes.China Merchants Securities also estimates Temu is losing $588 million to $954 million a year. Essentially PDD is subsidizing Temu’s early growth in a bid to win market share but it will have to cut back eventually and raise prices. Alibaba’s efforts are much more sensible and sustainable.The VerdictThere is no question Alibaba stock looks attractive at 13 times trailing earnings, 8 times next year’s estimates with Wall Street forecasting long-term 10% compounded annual growth for earnings.Yet operating income is tumbling and net profits plummeted 77% from the year-ago period. The e-commerce giant has plenty of cash on its balance sheet.However, it will be using that to invest in its various growth efforts, and Alibaba hasn’t shown yet how it will effectively fight back against the competition.For those reasons, I’d cautiously suggest buying only a small stake in BABA stock. You can always increase your purchase on any weakness. That growth came from tech companies&#39; ramped-up focus on bringing AI to their products and services. As Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a press release, &#34;Leading enterprise IT system and software providers announced partnerships to bring NVIDIA AI to every industry. The race is on to adopt generative AI.&#34;</p><p>Nvidia is clearly already benefiting from the surge in AI interest, and it&#39;s likely that this AI gold rush is just beginning. The AI chip market is worth $28 billion this year and will grow to an estimated $165 billion by 2030. Nvidia continues to release new AI technologies to stay ahead of its rivals, increasing the company&#39;s chances of remaining the top choice for AI processors.</p><h2 id=\"id_3952127128\">What&#39;s going wrong for Nvidia</h2><p>There&#39;s not much going wrong for Nvidia right now, except perhaps that the company&#39;s huge share price gains have made Nvidia&#39;s stock pretty expensive. Nvidia&#39;s shares currently have a price-to-earnings ratio of 96, much higher than the current tech average P/E ratio of about 30. In other words, Nvidia is not a value stock.</p><p>So buying Nvidia&#39;s stock right now means that you&#39;re paying a premium. But just because the stock is pricey doesn&#39;t mean it&#39;s overpriced. Right now the average price target among 38 analysts for Nvidia&#39;s stock is $645, representing a 52% increase from the company&#39;s share price as of this writing. </p><p>Of course, just because analysts set a high price target for a stock doesn&#39;t mean it will get there. However, it does indicate that many analysts observing the company believe there could be much more upside from this stock, and based on the company&#39;s long-term opportunities in AI I think they could be right. </p><h2 id=\"id_4157585011\">Nvidia stock is a buy</h2><p>There&#39;s no getting around the fact that Nvidia&#39;s stock is expensive, but I think the company&#39;s long-term opportunities from AI make up for it. AI is just getting started, and in the coming years companies of all sizes will likely be utilizing AI internally and adding to their products and services. </p><p>The initial demand for chips for AI data centers is a good indication that the largest tech companies are serious about AI integration, and that should continue to keep Nvidia&#39;s chips in high demand for years to come. Once a Wall Street darling that saw demand for its virtual care services soar during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Teladoc stock is barely getting any love now.</p><p>It&#39;s true that demand for virtual medical consultations has faded as the pandemic eased, but it&#39;s also true that Teladoc still grew its Q1 revenue by 25% and expects to grow revenue by 18%-23% this year. With more organizations and governments worldwide digitizing services wherever possible, demand for telehealth is expected to grow double-digits in the years to come. Teladoc also specializes in virtual chronic disease management, and as the world&#39;s largest telehealth company, has a lot of power to navigate storms.</p><p>For example, high advertising rates are pressurizing margins for Teladoc&#39;s BetterHelp direct-to-consumer mental health business. Yet, Teladoc&#39;s scale still gives it the leeway to spend more money on the business to boost sales. In fact, Teladoc still expects 2022 BetterHelp revenue to grow in the &#34;upper half&#34; of its long-term mental health revenue growth target of 30%-40% per year.</p><p>Also, Teladoc wants to focus on whole-person care than individual solutions, meaning it wants customers to use multiple products. This strategy could hugely boost customer stickiness and bring in more revenue per customer in the long run, which should eventually translate into more stable revenues and margins. In Q1, multiproduct sales made up 78% of Teladoc&#39;s total sales.</p><p>It&#39;s safe to assume Teladoc&#39;s growth won&#39;t be easy to come by at least in the near term, but it&#39;s also hard to argue the growth potential in telehealth. Teladoc is still transitioning from individual to whole-person offerings, and it&#39;s only fair to give the company time to prove itself. If Teladoc can deliver, you&#39;d look back and regret not buying the stock on days like today.</p><h2>This industry is growing by leaps and bounds, and so is this stock</h2><p>If you&#39;ve been following the red-hot electric vehicle (EV) industry closely, you wouldn&#39;t be surprised to find an EV stock on a list of growth stocks. What might surprise you though is the stock I&#39;m going to name now: <b>BYD</b>.</p><p>Based in China, BYD is absolutely crushing it the world&#39;s largest EV market. BYD is, in fact, the largest seller of new energy vehicles (NEV) in China, and was the second-largest seller of plug-in EVs worldwide in 2021, second only to <b>Tesla</b>. Teladoc also specializes in virtual chronic disease management, and as the world's largest telehealth company, has a lot of power to navigate storms.For example, high advertising rates are pressurizing margins for Teladoc's BetterHelp direct-to-consumer mental health business. Yet, Teladoc's scale still gives it the leeway to spend more money on the business to boost sales. I understand that&#39;s a lot to ask, but that&#39;s where things stand after the dramatic recent plunge in Teladoc&#39;s stock price. Yet Teladoc is a leader in an industry that&#39;s only just getting started, and if the company can continue growing its revenue double-digits, the stock should get its due in due time.</p><p>Teladoc stock lost almost half its value in <i><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a></i> day on April 28 after the telehealth giant slashed its outlook for 2022 and reported a huge loss for its first quarter as it recorded a $6.6 billion non-cash goodwill impairment charge. Once a Wall Street darling that saw demand for its virtual care services soar during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Teladoc stock is barely getting any love now.</p><p>It&#39;s true that demand for virtual medical consultations has faded as the pandemic eased, but it&#39;s also true that Teladoc still grew its Q1 revenue by 25% and expects to grow revenue by 18%-23% this year. With more organizations and governments worldwide digitizing services wherever possible, demand for telehealth is expected to grow double-digits in the years to come. Teladoc also specializes in virtual chronic disease management, and as the world&#39;s largest telehealth company, has a lot of power to navigate storms.</p><p>For example, high advertising rates are pressurizing margins for Teladoc&#39;s BetterHelp direct-to-consumer mental health business. Yet, Teladoc&#39;s scale still gives it the leeway to spend more money on the business to boost sales. In fact, Teladoc still expects 2022 BetterHelp revenue to grow in the &#34;upper half&#34; of its long-term mental health revenue growth target of 30%-40% per year.</p><p>Also, Teladoc wants to focus on whole-person care than individual solutions, meaning it wants customers to use multiple products. This strategy could hugely boost customer stickiness and bring in more revenue per customer in the long run, which should eventually translate into more stable revenues and margins. In Q1, multiproduct sales made up 78% of Teladoc&#39;s total sales.</p><p>It&#39;s safe to assume Teladoc&#39;s growth won&#39;t be easy to come by at least in the near term, but it&#39;s also hard to argue the growth potential in telehealth. Teladoc is still transitioning from individual to whole-person offerings, and it&#39;s only fair to give the company time to prove itself. If Teladoc can deliver, you&#39;d look back and regret not buying the stock on days like today.</p><h2>This industry is growing by leaps and bounds, and so is this stock</h2><p>If you&#39;ve been following the red-hot electric vehicle (EV) industry closely, you wouldn&#39;t be surprised to find an EV stock on a list of growth stocks. What might surprise you though is the stock I&#39;m going to name now: <b>BYD</b>.</p><p>Based in China, BYD is absolutely crushing it the world&#39;s largest EV market. BYD is, in fact, the largest seller of new energy vehicles (NEV) in China, and was the second-largest seller of plug-in EVs worldwide in 2021, second only to <b>Tesla</b>. Yet while Tesla must abide by China&#39;s rules for foreign companies that can throttle growth at times, BYD has a clout that&#39;s hard to match. <i>And</i>, Tesla&#39;s sales growth pales in comparison to BYD&#39;s.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/17a5d31c55d9368745e4ffc7d4746c34\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"668\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Image source: Statista.</p><p>Even in April, when sales for most automakers nosedived as they suspended operations amid COVID-19 lockdowns, BYD&#39;s NEV sales rocketed 313%  higher year over year and were up a percentage point sequentially. BYD&#39;s sales of 106,042 NEVs last month was in fact a record for the company.</p><p>There&#39;s a lot more to BYD. It is also one of the largest lithium-ion battery makers in China. With prices of lithium reaching for the skies amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict and demand soaring even as supply remains tight as EV sales boom, BYD is sitting on a massive cash machine.</p><p>BYD took a big leap last month when it discontinued manufacturing of gasoline vehicles as it strives to become a pure EV play. This move itself reflects BYD&#34;s confidence in making it big in the EV industry, and with the industry itself only just getting started, BYD is the kind of stock you&#39;d want to put your money on.</p><h2>Dirt-cheap stock for its growth potential</h2><p><b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CRM\">Salesforce</a></b> is a leader in customer relationship management (CRM) software. Simply put, the company manages all customer information for organizations of all types and sizes to help them build client relationships and boost customer retention and sales.</p><p>To give you an example, A brick-and-mortar consumer goods company that&#39;s turning to e-commerce uses CRM software to view all customer information and interaction at one place. That enables quicker and better customer service, and companies can even track and analyze customer interaction on their website to build better products and individual consumer experiences.</p><p>CR is a multi-billion dollar market that&#39;s expected to grow at double-digit compound annual rates in the coming years. For nine consecutive years, Salesforce has been ranked as the world&#39;s top CRM provider by research firm International Data Corporation, better known as IDC. For fiscal year 2023, Salesforce expects revenue to grow 21% at the higher end of its guidance range.</p><p>Those are solid numbers, and although Salesforce generated record revenue in fiscal 2022, the stock is trading significantly below its five-year average price-to-sales ratio. With more organizations and governments worldwide digitizing services wherever possible, demand for telehealth is expected to grow double-digits in the years to come. Teladoc also specializes in virtual chronic disease management, and as the world's largest telehealth company, has a lot of power to navigate storms.For example, high advertising rates are pressurizing margins for Teladoc's BetterHelp direct-to-consumer mental health business. Yet, Teladoc's scale still gives it the leeway to spend more money on the business to boost sales. In fact, Teladoc still expects 2022 BetterHelp revenue to grow in the \"upper half\" of its long-term mental health revenue growth target of 30%-40% per year.Also, Teladoc wants to focus on whole-person care than individual solutions, meaning it wants customers to use multiple products. China’s slowing economy, rising competition and attempts at entering new verticals haven’t always worked out as expected. Alibaba stock could be in trouble.</p><p>Trading at such discounted valuations, investors wonder whether now is a good time to scoop up Alibaba stock cheap or will they be catching a falling knife? Amid the gloom surrounding the online retailer there are rays of light. Let’s check out what’s good behind the stock, the bad and the downright ugly before rendering a decision.</p><h2 id=\"id_3637266253\">A Closer Look at Alibaba Stock</h2><p>Alibaba is the world’s largest e-commerce business in terms of gross merchandise value. Its Tmall and Taobao e-commerce platforms remain the company’s primary revenue and growth drivers.</p><p>They allow it to build out its cloud services business Alibaba Cloud while also supporting Alibaba’s global expansion efforts. </p><p>Internationally, the cross-border AliExpress unit enabled its International Digital Commerce Group to see a 44% increase in revenue to $4 billion. AliExpress itself saw 60% order growth.</p><p>The e-commerce giant also announced it would hike its share repurchase program by $25 billion, for a total of $35.3 billion through 2027. In the quarter ending March 2024, it bought $4.8 billion worth of Alibaba stock. That is the second largest share repurchase amount since going public. </p><h2 id=\"id_2213324251\">BABA Coughs and Stalls</h2><p>Still, Alibaba’s business is stalling. Alibaba’s gross merchandise volume was down for the year ending in March 2023, though through the first nine months of the current fiscal year GMV nominally improved.</p><p>It was forced to scrap its spinoff of its Cainiao logistics business. Instead, Alibaba will buy the remaining portion it doesn’t own. IPO conditions are not conducive and Alibaba needs to reinforce its e-commerce business to contend with the inroads its rivals made.</p><p>Efforts to enter new verticals while restructuring its business haven’t gone according to plan.</p><h2 id=\"id_1713443961\">Things Could Get Worse</h2><p>Competition is fierce and only growing more intense. Alibaba is losing market share to <strong>PDD Holdings</strong> (NASDAQ:<strong>PDD</strong>), the owner of the ubiquitous Temu website.</p><p>You can’t go anywhere without the deep discount website pushing some gadget at a crazy cheap price. It was the most downloaded iPhone app in 2023, blunting Alibaba’s own expansion efforts in the U.S.</p><p>Similarly, the short-form video platform Douyin from <strong>ByteDance</strong> is expanding exponentially in China. Douyin is essentially the TikTok platform for China minus all the vapid content the latter carries.</p><p>The video site is also a growing retail e-commerce platform and growing far faster than Alibaba, <strong>JD.com</strong> (NASDAQ:<strong>JD</strong>) or PDD’s Pinduoduo, according to eMarketer.</p><p>Douyin saw a 256% increase in GMV for local life services such as restaurants, local brick-and-mortar businesses and lifestyle activity providers last year.</p><p>Having to fight a battle on two fronts, Alibaba is losing but not all hope is lost. As meteoric as Temu’s rise has been, it is not sustainable. An analysis by <em>Wired</em> found PDD is losing $30 on every sale it makes.</p><p>China Merchants Securities also estimates Temu is losing $588 million to $954 million a year. Essentially PDD is subsidizing Temu’s early growth in a bid to win market share but it will have to cut back eventually and raise prices. Alibaba’s efforts are much more sensible and sustainable.</p><h2 id=\"id_2876214428\">The Verdict</h2><p>There is no question Alibaba stock looks attractive at 13 times trailing earnings, 8 times next year’s estimates with Wall Street forecasting long-term 10% compounded annual growth for earnings.</p><p>Yet operating income is tumbling and net profits plummeted 77% from the year-ago period. The e-commerce giant has plenty of cash on its balance sheet.</p><p>However, it will be using that to invest in its various growth efforts, and Alibaba hasn’t shown yet how it will effectively fight back against the competition.</p><p>For those reasons, I’d cautiously suggest buying only a small stake in BABA stock. You can always increase your purchase on any weakness. China’s slowing economy, rising competition and attempts at entering new verticals haven’t always worked out as expected. Alibaba stock could be in trouble.Trading at such discounted valuations, investors wonder whether now is a good time to scoop up Alibaba stock cheap or will they be catching a falling knife? Amid the gloom surrounding the online retailer there are rays of light. Let’s check out what’s good behind the stock, the bad and the downright ugly before rendering a decision.A Closer Look at Alibaba StockAlibaba is the world’s largest e-commerce business in terms of gross merchandise value. Its Tmall and Taobao e-commerce platforms remain the company’s primary revenue and growth drivers.They allow it to build out its cloud services business Alibaba Cloud while also supporting Alibaba’s global expansion efforts. Internationally, the cross-border AliExpress unit enabled its International Digital Commerce Group to see a 44% increase in revenue to $4 billion. AliExpress itself saw 60% order growth.The e-commerce giant also announced it would hike its share repurchase program by $25 billion, for a total of $35.3 billion through 2027. In the quarter ending March 2024, it bought $4.8 billion worth of Alibaba stock. That is the second largest share repurchase amount since going public. BABA Coughs and StallsStill, Alibaba’s business is stalling. Alibaba’s gross merchandise volume was down for the year ending in March 2023, though through the first nine months of the current fiscal year GMV nominally improved.It was forced to scrap its spinoff of its Cainiao logistics business. Instead, Alibaba will buy the remaining portion it doesn’t own. IPO conditions are not conducive and Alibaba needs to reinforce its e-commerce business to contend with the inroads its rivals made.Efforts to enter new verticals while restructuring its business haven’t gone according to plan.Things Could Get WorseCompetition is fierce and only growing more intense. Alibaba is losing market share to PDD Holdings (NASDAQ:PDD), the owner of the ubiquitous Temu website.You can’t go anywhere without the deep discount website pushing some gadget at a crazy cheap price. It was the most downloaded iPhone app in 2023, blunting Alibaba’s own expansion efforts in the U.S.Similarly, the short-form video platform Douyin from ByteDance is expanding exponentially in China. Douyin is essentially the TikTok platform for China minus all the vapid content the latter carries.The video site is also a growing retail e-commerce platform and growing far faster than Alibaba, JD.com (NASDAQ:JD) or PDD’s Pinduoduo, according to eMarketer.Douyin saw a 256% increase in GMV for local life services such as restaurants, local brick-and-mortar businesses and lifestyle activity providers last year.Having to fight a battle on two fronts, Alibaba is losing but not all hope is lost. As meteoric as Temu’s rise has been, it is not sustainable. An analysis by Wired found PDD is losing $30 on every sale it makes.China Merchants Securities also estimates Temu is losing $588 million to $954 million a year. Essentially PDD is subsidizing Temu’s early growth in a bid to win market share but it will have to cut back eventually and raise prices. Alibaba’s efforts are much more sensible and sustainable.The VerdictThere is no question Alibaba stock looks attractive at 13 times trailing earnings, 8 times next year’s estimates with Wall Street forecasting long-term 10% compounded annual growth for earnings.Yet operating income is tumbling and net profits plummeted 77% from the year-ago period. The e-commerce giant has plenty of cash on its balance sheet.However, it will be using that to invest in its various growth efforts, and Alibaba hasn’t shown yet how it will effectively fight back against the competition.For those reasons, I’d cautiously suggest buying only a small stake in BABA stock. You can always increase your purchase on any weakness.
