startups.

The Fed's aggressive rate-hiking path is accelerating this timeline.

In the post-consolidation era, high-quality EV stocks will have bigger sales, bigger earnings, bigger multiples, and much higher prices.

Reports of electric van maker Electric Last Mile Solutions’(NASDAQ:ELMS) bankruptcy filing on Sunday flew under the market news radar.

Electric Last Mile came public via a SPAC in 2021 amid a wave of other EV startups. At the time, it was pitched to investors as one of the best pure-plays on commercial fleet electrification. Today, it’s headed for the graveyard.

To us, this story is a canary in the coal mine for EV stocks.

While the EV industry is due for huge growth over the next decade, it’s also due for major consolidation. There are simply too many EV makers out there today. And only about 5% of them will make it in the long run. The other 95% will go bankrupt.

Electric Last Mile Solutions may be the first. It most certainly won’t be the last.

We always thought this consolidation would take several years to play out. But the Fed is accelerating that timeline. Its aggressive rate-hiking path is rapidly increasing the cost of capital in the U.S. economy. Each is a consumer-oriented technology company that has reached a massive scale. Amazon boasts over 200 million Prime members, and Apple crossed the 1 billion active iPhone mark more than a year ago.

Popularity among consumers is an excellent trait for a company to have, but a good investment requires more than that. Let's pit the e-commerce retailer against the smartphone pioneer and determine which is a better buy for today's long-term investors.

The case for Amazon

Amazon may be best known for its e-commerce business, but it has other lucrative sources of revenue. In fact, its Amazon Web Services segment brought in all the company's operating income in its most recent quarter, which ended on March 31, despite being only 16% of sales. Amazon's subscription services, which include revenue from Prime memberships, generated $8.4 billion in revenue in the quarter, up by 13% from the same quarter last year. And Amazon has successfully built a robust advertising business that earned $7.9 billion in Q1, up by 25% year over year.

These varied sources of revenue are crucial, considering e-commerce sales are slowing after the pandemic-related surge. E-commerce sales are a low-margin business, as evidenced in the most recent quarter, when Amazon lost money in online sales. Shipping is one big cost. Amazon offers Prime members -- who pay a yearly fee -- fast, free shipping and non-Prime members can get free shipping if they spend over $25 on an order.

These dynamics have worked to keep Amazon's overall operating profit margin grounded despite rapidly expanding sales. The metric has increased recently as the more profitable segments have taken a larger share of overall sales.

AMZN Operating Margin (TTM) data by YCharts

The case for Apple

Apple is best known for the iPhone. In the six months ended March 26, Apple sold $122.2 billion worth of iPhones, 55% of total sales. Still, like Amazon, Apple has done a solid job building a services business. During the same six months, Apple's services sales totaled $39.3 billion, a 20% year-over-year jump bringing it to about 18% of the total. The iPhone revenue jump was only 7.6%.

Its services include the App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV+, and iCloud. Again, similar to Amazon, Apple's services segment generates higher profit margins. In the quarter ended in March, Apple's services gross margin was 72.6%, while its products gross margin was 36.4%.

Apple has proven over decades that it can create innovative products that consumers will spend on. More recently, it is proving it can add supplemental services that deliver high profit margins. Indeed, management boasted it had 825 million paid subscribers as of March 26, increasing 165 million over the previous year.

That has undoubtedly helped boost Apple's gross profit margin from 37.8% in 2019 to 41.8% in 2021.

Apple wins this stock showdown

Apple and Amazon are both excellent businesses that will likely make you wealthier if you buy and hold each for five years or more. However, if you had to pick only one, I'd recommend should be Apple. The smartphone pioneer is trading at a substantial discount to Amazon when measured by the price-to-earnings ratio (24 versus 55). Each is a consumer-oriented technology company that has reached a massive scale. Amazon boasts over 200 million Prime members, and Apple crossed the 1 billion active iPhone mark more than a year ago.Popularity among consumers is an excellent trait for a company to have, but a good investment requires more than that. Let's pit the e-commerce retailer against the smartphone pioneer and determine which is a better buy for today's long-term investors. The case for AmazonAmazon may be best known for its e-commerce business, but it has other lucrative sources of revenue. The metric has increased recently as the more profitable segments have taken a larger share of overall sales.AMZN Operating Margin (TTM) data by YChartsThe case for AppleApple is best known for the iPhone. The iPhone revenue jump was only 7.6%.Its services include the App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV+, and iCloud. Again, similar to Amazon, Apple's services segment generates higher profit margins. In the quarter ended in March, Apple's services gross margin was 72.6%, while its products gross margin was 36.4%.Apple has proven over decades that it can create innovative products that consumers will spend on. More recently, it is proving it can add supplemental services that deliver high profit margins. Indeed, management boasted it had 825 million paid subscribers as of March 26, increasing 165 million over the previous year. That has undoubtedly helped boost Apple's gross profit margin from 37.8% in 2019 to 41.8% in 2021.Apple wins this stock showdownApple and Amazon are both excellent businesses that will likely make you wealthier if you buy and hold each for five years or more. However, if you had to pick only one, I'd recommend should be Apple. The smartphone pioneer is trading at a substantial discount to Amazon when measured by the price-to-earnings ratio (24 versus 55). Meanwhile, it is crushing Amazon on operating profit margins.AMZN PE Ratio data by YCharts","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":412,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9024648869,"gmtCreate":1653870084551,"gmtModify":1676535353488,"author":{"id":"4116423751152892","authorId":"4116423751152892","name":"Pedestrian A","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/81fef3953cc4d2f7ac3cba6cfb614ddf","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4116423751152892","idStr":"4116423751152892"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Other than the fundamentals and earnings, I guess the \"brand name\" says all! Not every bank is JPMorgan, however, and investors should be selective in choosing which ones to buy.

JPMorgan held its investor day on Monday, and it was well celebrated by investors. Perhaps it was the fact that the company maintained its target for a 17% return on tangible equity, or maybe it was because CEO Jamie Dimon talked up the strength of the U.S. economy and the U.S. consumer.

By the end of the week, JPMorgan stock had gained 12%, its best week since June 2020. "Based on the investor day, we believe JPM's mojo is back," writes RBC Capital Markets analyst Gerard Cassidy.

The entire banking sector got its mojo back, too, at least for the week, with the SPDR S&P Bank exchange-traded fund $(KBE)$ advancing 7.4%. But by the end of the week, Credit Suisse analyst Susan Roth Katzke had downgraded shares of Citigroup $(C)$ to Neutral from Outperform, even though the fundamental story hadn't changed. Citi is still restructuring its business, its stock is still cheap, and Katzke didn't even adjust her estimates. What had changed was the price: Citigroup has gained 15% since May 12, putting the stock within spitting distance of her $58 target price.

One piece of good news from JPMorgan that should apply broadly: The bank raised its net interest income forecast to $56 billion, up from its previous guidance of $53 billion, thanks to higher interest rates and still low deposit rates. That's a fancy way of saying it can earn a decent amount on the money it invests while paying its customers very little. But banks still have other problems to deal with, including slowing economic growth and weakening credit.

And while banks look cheap -- they're trading at about nine times 2023 earnings-per-share estimates, or 55% of the S&P 500's, well below the 70% to 80% historical level -- they're not cheap enough to reflect a recession, explains Evercore ISI analyst John Pancari. "We recommend banks with catalysts, and those that could present upside from better [net interest income] sensitivity...but with likely less downside risk from credit weakness," he writes. Not every bank is JPMorgan, however, and investors should be selective in choosing which ones to buy.JPMorgan held its investor day on Monday, and it was well celebrated by investors. Perhaps it was the fact that the company maintained its target for a 17% return on tangible equity, or maybe it was because CEO Jamie Dimon talked up the strength of the U.S. economy and the U.S. consumer.By the end of the week, JPMorgan stock had gained 12%, its best week since June 2020. \"Based on the investor day, we believe JPM's mojo is back,\" writes RBC Capital Markets analyst Gerard Cassidy. \"We recommend banks with catalysts, and those that could present upside from better [net interest income] sensitivity...but with likely less downside risk from credit weakness,\" he writes. His top picks include Wells Fargo $(WFC)$, $First Republic Bank(FRC-N)$ $(FRC)$, and KeyCorp $(KEY.AU)$.As for the SPDR S&P Bank ETF, it appears to have found support near $45, roughly where it had been in January 2021. But one of the characteristics it is least known for is its dividend payment. The company is relatively new to the dividend-paying list of stocks and is far from reaching Dividend King status. The tech giant resumed paying a dividend in 2012 after a 17-year pause.

Still, Apple could be an excellent dividend stock for investors who buy it today. Let's look at its capacity to pay dividends and consider its valuation to determine its virtues as a dividend stock.

Apple has delivered robust dividend growth

Income investors can be encouraged by Apple's acceleration of dividend payments. From 2012 to 2021, the company has increased its dividend per share from $0.10 to $0.85. That means shareholders saw their dividends grow more than eightfold in that time.

In that same period, earnings per share rose from $1.58 to $5.61. Earnings are crucial to sustaining a dividend payment.
