Instead, we act on the short term buy signal we now see and you can see on the chart.</li><li>The SPY just put in place a &#34;higher-low&#34; in price and you can see that on the chart. You can also see what happened the last time it did this.</li><li>Price reached higher last time this happened, looking for a &#34;higher-high&#34; in price. Did it find it? Yes.</li><li>The good news: price has not gone down to retest support at $364. Instead it keeps reaching for $392.</li><li>If it triggers our Buy Alert above $392, we think it will reach for $404. Any move higher, in a bear market is difficult and you can see the struggle going on here.</li></ul><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0942ec404ebc02752e62408a90fefc89\" tg-width=\"1080\" tg-height=\"607\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>JuSun/iStock via Getty Images</span></p><p>This old, bear market (NYSEARCA:SPY) is struggling to move higher and needs all the help it can get. It had some good news on inflation and consumer spending and maybe that is why we are seeinga positive, &#34;higher-low&#34; in price for the SPY. Last time this happened, in this bear market, price moved up to a &#34;higher-high&#34; and that would imply a target now of around $412.</p><p><b>Our Buy And Sell Alerts</b></p><p>Are we predicting that price is going to $412? No. We wait for the signals to tell us what to do next. We have set our buy alert at $396 and if that is triggered, we will wait to see if it reaches $404. If price breaks above $404, we may think about $412.</p><p>If price does reach that $412 level, does it mean that we are out of the bear market? Hardly. You can see it happened last time, and the bear continued on its downward path. If that happens again, we have sell alerts set up to trigger and prompt us to play the downside, just as the buy alerts prompt us to play the upside.</p><p>When this bounce tops out, as we expect it will, then we are looking at a retest of support at $364. We have a sell alert set at $362, and if that is triggered, we expect this bear market to continue down to test $341 by October. Are we predicting $341? No. We will let the signals tell us and act accordingly.</p><p><b>Short Term vs. Long Term</b></p><p>Below is the daily chart and we only use it to see the price trends and price action on a daily basis. On a day to day basis, price is reacting to every headline and that is why it is more important to look at the overall trendlines. As you can see, the trendlines are pointed down. The blue arrow is dropping even more sharply than the red arrow. That&#39;s bearish. (We have also drawn support and resistance lines across the price chart.)</p><p><b>Little Bounce vs. Big Bounce</b></p><p>You can see price struggling to even reach these two, down trendlines. As you well know, bounces are going to struggle in a bear market like this. We could have a nice big bounce, that doesn&#39;t struggle, if, for instance, the war ended. If inflation turned down from the 9.1% level just reported, that would create a nice bounce. Likewise, when the Fed stops raising rates, there will be a big bounce that would probably end this bear market.</p><p>None of these big bounces seem to be on the horizon, so we expect this struggling, little bounce to top out and turn down to retest support at $364. Short term, the signals are telling us that price will slowly move higher, testing resistance levels and support levels in a zig-zag move higher. We will wait for the signals to tell us when this bounce is finished and the market is once more ready to go down and form a bottom. We don&#39;t see even the beginning of the formation of a bottom yet.</p><p><b>Long Term Downtrends</b></p><p>Here is the daily chart showing the downtrends. The signals show us how Demand and Supply are moving price from day to day. This daily swing in price is a bumpy ride to say the least:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/995b3b6f53f1cb442b1b95b06b6632d4\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"853\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Price Testing Red Resistance Line $387 (StockCharts.com)</span></p><p><b>NOTE</b>: On the above chart, you can see that <b>CMF Money flow</b> is in the green and still climbing. The <b>MACD</b> still has a Buy Signal.<b>ADX</b> is improving as Supply is dropping and Demand is improving. The <b>Full STO</b> has reversed and is moving up from Supply to Demand. Our proprietary signal <b>SIDBUYS,</b>at the top of the chart, shows that only 6.9% of stocks in the Index have our proprietary SID Buy Signal. This signal improved with this bounce. The &#34;red cloud&#34; outlines the resistance this move up is facing. Price is trying to reach that red cloud and not having much luck.</p><p><b>Higher-Low Bounce</b></p><p>Now let&#39;s look at the more arcane <b>Point &amp; Figure chart</b> where you can see the short term, <b>higher-low, buy signal</b> and I have underlined it in blue. It had some good news on inflation and consumer spending and maybe that is why we are seeinga positive, \"higher-low\" in price for the SPY. Last time this happened, in this bear market, price moved up to a \"higher-high\" and that would imply a target now of around $412.Our Buy And Sell AlertsAre we predicting that price is going to $412? No. We wait for the signals to tell us what to do next. We have set our buy alert at $396 and if that is triggered, we will wait to see if it reaches $404. If price breaks above $404, we may think about $412.If price does reach that $412 level, does it mean that we are out of the bear market? Hardly. You can see it happened last time, and the bear continued on its downward path. If that happens again, we have sell alerts set up to trigger and prompt us to play the downside, just as the buy alerts prompt us to play the upside.When this bounce tops out, as we expect it will, then we are looking at a retest of support at $364. We have a sell alert set at $362, and if that is triggered, we expect this bear market to continue down to test $341 by October. Are we predicting $341? No. We will let the signals tell us and act accordingly.Short Term vs. Long TermBelow is the daily chart and we only use it to see the price trends and price action on a daily basis. On a day to day basis, price is reacting to every headline and that is why it is more important to look at the overall trendlines. As you can see, the trendlines are pointed down. The blue arrow is dropping even more sharply than the red arrow. That's bearish. (We have also drawn support and resistance lines across the price chart.)Little Bounce vs. Big BounceYou can see price struggling to even reach these two, down trendlines. As you well know, bounces are going to struggle in a bear market like this. We could have a nice big bounce, that doesn't struggle, if, for instance, the war ended. If inflation turned down from the 9.1% level just reported, that would create a nice bounce. Likewise, when the Fed stops raising rates, there will be a big bounce that would probably end this bear market.None of these big bounces seem to be on the horizon, so we expect this struggling, little bounce to top out and turn down to retest support at $364. Short term, the signals are telling us that price will slowly move higher, testing resistance levels and support levels in a zig-zag move higher. We will wait for the signals to tell us when this bounce is finished and the market is once more ready to go down and form a bottom. We don't see even the beginning of the formation of a bottom yet.Long Term DowntrendsHere is the daily chart showing the downtrends. Spectacular gains for tech megacaps over recent years resulted in paper losses of nearly $16 billion last year and almost $20 billion in 2020 for those shorting the FAANG group, according to S3’s calculations.</p><p>“The buy-the-dip mentality made it very difficult to short in the past, because even if you were right about bad news, no one cared,” said Bill Fleckenstein, president of Fleckenstein Capital. “People laughed off problems all throughout 2021, but that’s not the case anymore.”</p><p>The tide has turned for previously unstoppable tech giants, with the NYSE FANG+ Index down 31% and poised for its first annual decline on record, according to Bloomberg data going back to 2014. Investors have been fleeing growth stocks -- priced on earnings expected in the future -- in anticipation of further supersized interest rates hikes from the Federal Reserve and amid concerns about recession.</p><p>Short sellers borrow shares and sell them, hoping to buy them back at a lower price to profit from the difference. But getting the timing right is crucial. If share prices rise, they can lose money instead -- as was the case in 2020 and 2021, when the NYSE FANG+ Index soared.</p><p>Fleckenstein said he had stopped shorting in the past few years, even though many companies got “absurdly” priced, because quantitative easing prevented deep selloffs. “It has obviously gotten easier this year, though I still haven’t gotten too aggressive, since there’s so much volatility,” he said.</p><p>After years of outsized gains on optimism about big tech’s ability to continue its rapid growth, bets against the group have remained fairly small. Short interest as a percentage of total shares outstanding is less than 3% in all of the FAANG stocks, according to S3 data.</p><p>And given the nosedive already experienced this year -- with the Nasdaq 100 down about 28% -- it may get harder to make money betting on further declines for the sector. The small-cap benchmark Russell 2000 indexis down 24% year to date, its worst first half since inception in 1984. At the beginning of June, just 37% were bearish while 32% remained bullish.</p><p>The fear of a lower market is largely due to anticipations of weaker earnings in the coming months. According to Bank of America’s global fund manager survey in June, 72% of investors expect global profits to worsen over the next 12 months, up 6 percentage points from May and the highest level since September 2008. Investors are telling companies to “play it safe” and strengthen their balance sheets, rather than increase capital expenditure or deliver share buybacks.</p><p>“The bear market will not be over until recession arrives or the risk of one is extinguished,” wrote Morgan Stanley chief U.S. equity strategist Mike Wilson last week. The last time the S&amp;P 500 fell this much in the first half was in 1970, according to Dow Jones markets data.</p><p>Investor sentiment has tumbled along with stock prices, and many market analysts expect the S&amp;P 500 to slide some more.The 12 bear markets since World War II—not including the current one—lasted an average of 10 months from market peak to trough, with an average drop of 34%.If the current bear market were to follow this pattern, it wouldn’t hit bottom until October.</p><p>Even so, a rebound, when it comes, could be dramatic. Markets tend to perform the best when investors are the gloomiest.</p><p>With its 20.6% loss year to date, the S&amp;P 500 posted its fourth-worst first-half performance on record, only behind 1932, 1962, and 1970, when it lost 45.4%, 23.5%, and 21.0%, respectively.</p><p>Other corners of the stock market are suffering even more. The small-cap benchmark Russell 2000 indexis down 24% year to date, its worst first half since inception in 1984. That is a much larger drop than the previous records—the 14% fall in the first half of 2020 due to the pandemic shock and the 10% loss in the first half of 2008 amid the global financial crisis.</p><p>Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite has plunged 29.5% year to date, also the worst first half of a year on record since its inception in 1971. The sharp fall has outpaced the 25% drop in the first half of 2002 at the height of the dot-com bubble burst, and the 24% loss in the first half of 1973 after the U.S. stopped exchanging dollars for gold and saw a prolonged period of inflation.</p><p>Tech companies are experiencing a particularly steep dive, but there is hardly any corner of refuge in the stock market. The recession fear has pushed 10 out of 11 sectors into the red territory, led by consumer discretionary and communication services—things people often cut first when they need to tighten the belt. Consumer discretionary stocks in the S&amp;P 500 have fallen 33%, while communications services are down 30%.</p><p>Energy stocks were the only ones that posted gains in the first half on the back of soaring oil prices, but even that sector has lost its momentum since June. Although energy companies are still pocketing record profits today, traders are quite aware that a recession would drag down demand, curb oil prices, and cut into their earnings. The S&amp;P 500’s energy sector has tumbled 22% in the past three weeks, but still trades 28% higher than where it was at the beginning of the year.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c4e2b054b20b2cf34312e2f14d032869\" tg-width=\"996\" tg-height=\"647\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Although the overall market has performed better in the past two weeks, many are worried that things could take a worse turn in the second half of the year.</p><p>As of last week, 59% of investors were bearish about where the market is heading in the next six months, only 18% were bullish, according to a weekly sentiment survey from the American Association of Individual Investors. The bearish reading was the sixth highest since the survey started in 1987. At the beginning of June, just 37% were bearish while 32% remained bullish.</p><p>The fear of a lower market is largely due to anticipations of weaker earnings in the coming months. According to Bank of America’s global fund manager survey in June, 72% of investors expect global profits to worsen over the next 12 months, up 6 percentage points from May and the highest level since September 2008. Investors are telling companies to “play it safe” and strengthen their balance sheets, rather than increase capital expenditure or deliver share buybacks.</p><p>“The bear market will not be over until recession arrives or the risk of one is extinguished,” wrote Morgan Stanley chief U.S. equity strategist Mike Wilson last week. A full-fledged recession could push the S&amp;P 500 to bottom near 2900, or more than 23% below its current level, according to Wilson.</p><p>Other Wall Street giants have similar expectations. Goldman Sachs strategists said stocks are only pricing in a modest recession, leaving them open to a further worsening in expectations. Bank of America said the S&amp;P 500 could bottom as low as 3000 in a worst-case scenario.</p><p>If there is any silver lining to these dim expectations, it’s worth noting that investor sentiment is often a contrarian indicator. Historically, unusually bearish sentiment—a sign of fearand cautious behaviors—tends to be followed by above-average market returns, while overly bullish sentiment—a sign of greed and risk taking—is often followed by below-average returns.</p><p>Indeed, during previous years when the S&amp;P 500 was down at least 15% at the midway point of the year, the index has finished higher in the final six months every single time, with an average return of nearly 24%. “Although most investors probably don’t feel like that is possible in 2022, just remember history says a surprise bullish move is possible,” wrote LPL Financial chief market strategist Ryan Detrick last week.</p><p>Citianalysts, for one, believe the second half of the year could bring “low double digit upside” gains in the S&amp;P 500. The market has mostly priced in the Fed’s planned rate hikes and their effects on stock valuations, wrote the analysts in a research note last week. Any signs of economic slowdown could help alleviate concerns about inflation and more hawkish Fed moves.</p><p>Meanwhile, they believe that companies should have enough pricing power to pass the rising costs to consumers, which means margins might hold up better than expected. “Better-than-feared earnings and signs of peaking rates, combined with bearish investor positioning, support a positive [second half] risk/reward set up,” they wrote.</p><p>Although Citi has lowered its year-end target for the S&amp;P 500 to 4200 from 4700, it’s still much higher than many of its peers. The last time the S&P 500 fell this much in the first half was in 1970, according to Dow Jones markets data.Investor sentiment has tumbled along with stock prices, and many market analysts expect the S&P 500 to slide some more.The 12 bear markets since World War II—not including the current one—lasted an average of 10 months from market peak to trough, with an average drop of 34%.If the current bear market were to follow this pattern, it wouldn’t hit bottom until October.Even so, a rebound, when it comes, could be dramatic. Markets tend to perform the best when investors are the gloomiest.With its 20.6% loss year to date, the S&P 500 posted its fourth-worst first-half performance on record, only behind 1932, 1962, and 1970, when it lost 45.4%, 23.5%, and 21.0%, respectively.Other corners of the stock market are suffering even more. The small-cap benchmark Russell 2000 indexis down 24% year to date, its worst first half since inception in 1984. That is a much larger drop than the previous records—the 14% fall in the first half of 2020 due to the pandemic shock and the 10% loss in the first half of 2008 amid the global financial crisis.Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite has plunged 29.5% year to date, also the worst first half of a year on record since its inception in 1971. The sharp fall has outpaced the 25% drop in the first half of 2002 at the height of the dot-com bubble burst, and the 24% loss in the first half of 1973 after the U.S. stopped exchanging dollars for gold and saw a prolonged period of inflation.Tech companies are experiencing a particularly steep dive, but there is hardly any corner of refuge in the stock market. The recession fear has pushed 10 out of 11 sectors into the red territory, led by consumer discretionary and communication services—things people often cut first when they need to tighten the belt. Consumer discretionary stocks in the S&P 500 have fallen 33%, while communications services are down 30%.Energy stocks were the only ones that posted gains in the first half on the back of soaring oil prices, but even that sector has lost its momentum since June. Although energy companies are still pocketing record profits today, traders are quite aware that a recession would drag down demand, curb oil prices, and cut into their earnings. The S&P 500’s energy sector has tumbled 22% in the past three weeks, but still trades 28% higher than where it was at the beginning of the year.Although the overall market has performed better in the past two weeks, many are worried that things could take a worse turn in the second half of the year.As of last week, 59% of investors were bearish about where the market is heading in the next six months, only 18% were bullish, according to a weekly sentiment survey from the American Association of Individual Investors. The bearish reading was the sixth highest since the survey started in 1987. At the beginning of June, just 37% were bearish while 32% remained bullish.The fear of a lower market is largely due to anticipations of weaker earnings in the coming months. According to Bank of America’s global fund manager survey in June, 72% of investors expect global profits to worsen over the next 12 months, up 6 percentage points from May and the highest level since September 2008. Investors are telling companies to “play it safe” and strengthen their balance sheets, rather than increase capital expenditure or deliver share buybacks.“The bear market will not be over until recession arrives or the risk of one is extinguished,” wrote Morgan Stanley chief U.S. equity strategist Mike Wilson last week. A full-fledged recession could push the S&P 500 to bottom near 2900, or more than 23% below its current level, according to Wilson.Other Wall Street giants have similar expectations. Goldman Sachs strategists said stocks are only pricing in a modest recession, leaving them open to a further worsening in expectations. Bank of America said the S&P 500 could bottom as low as 3000 in a worst-case scenario.If there is any silver lining to these dim expectations, it’s worth noting that investor sentiment is often a contrarian indicator. Historically, unusually bearish sentiment—a sign of fearand cautious behaviors—tends to be followed by above-average market returns, while overly bullish sentiment—a sign of greed and risk taking—is often followed by below-average returns.Indeed, during previous years when the S&P 500 was down at least 15% at the midway point of the year, the index has finished higher in the final six months every single time, with an average return of nearly 24%. “Although most investors probably don’t feel like that is possible in 2022, just remember history says a surprise bullish move is possible,” wrote LPL Financial chief market strategist Ryan Detrick last week.Citianalysts, for one, believe the second half of the year could bring “low double digit upside” gains in the S&P 500. The market has mostly priced in the Fed’s planned rate hikes and their effects on stock valuations, wrote the analysts in a research note last week.
