is due thi","content":"

Few things moved the U.S. stock market last year like inflation data and the next reading is due this week.

Under the spotlight is the January consumer price index, which is set to be released at 8:30 am Eastern on Tuesday. Traders are expecting the data to provide more clues on whether the Federal Reserve may pause its interest rate hikes later this year in its combat with inflation that was running at a 40-year high last year.

In fact, CPI data publication days have been among the most volatile for stocks for the past year.

When the August inflation data arrived hotter than expected on Sept. 13, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite plunged 4.3% and 5.2%, respectively, their largest single-day drop in 2022, according to Dow Jones market data.

By contrast, when the October CPI data was released on Nov. 10, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite rallied over 5.5% and 7.3%, respectively, recording their largest single day rally in 2022.

Intraday volatility tends to be significant as well during CPI days in recent months. When the September data was released on Oct. 13, the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged nearly 1,500 points from its trough to peak, recording one of the biggest intraday swings for the index in recent years.

The inflation data for January and the following months especially matters, as it may point to whether the Fed could successfully steer the U.S. economy to a "soft landing," where inflation falls while unemployment remains low, according to Scott Ladner, chief investment officer at Horizon Investments.

Earlier this month, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said for the first time that "the disinflationary process" is under way. He reiterated the point in the past week, saying in an interview that "the disinflationary process, the process of getting inflation down, has begun and it's begun in the goods sector, which is about a quarter of our economy."

Still, "the reality is we're going to react to the data, so if we continue to get, for example, strong labor-market reports or higher inflation reports, it may well be the case that we have do more and raise rates more than is priced in," he added.

Powell has been sending a message that as long as inflation continues to ease, the Fed will allow economic growth to remain robust, according to Horizon's Ladner.

That being said, the market is not as scared of CPI reports anymore, as the annual rate of inflation had fallen for six months in a row, said Brian Overby, senior markets strategist at Ally. "The market used to be so intently nervous about CPI," Overby said.

Read:Traders brace for a blowup as cost of protection for U.S. stocks hits highest level since October

However, some uncertainty remains. "I think most economists and policymakers just kind of assume that it will be a one way development in terms of inflation from here on now, but that might not be the case," Megan Greene, global chief economist at the Kroll Institute, told MarketWatch in a phone interview.

The data comes after the stock market's 2023 rally stalled in the past week. The Nasdaq Composite saw a 2.4% fall, ending a string of five straight weekly gains, while the S&P 500 shed 1.1% and the Dow lost 0.2%. Stocks remain up solidly for the new year.

Economists polled by the Wall Street Journal forecast a 0.4% increase in the January CPI, which would slow the year-over-year rate to 6.2% from 6.5% in December. Year-over-year CPI peaked at a roughly 40-year high of 9.1% last summer. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, is expected to rise 0.3% in January, with the year-over-year rate at 5.4% versus 5.7% in December.

Jay Hatfield, chief executive at Infrastructure Capital Management, said he is concerned that the core CPI might print hotter than expected.

"What's been driving inflation down has been the volatile component of used cars. And our data shows used cars inflation is actually going up and not down," Hatfield said. Meanwhile, the way that the Bureau of Labor Statistics calculates shelter costs tends to lead the number to print higher, Hatfield said.

Louis Navellier, founder and chief investment officer at Navellier & Associates, said he is paying particular attention to owners' equivalent rent, which is part of the shelter component of CPI. It's rise accelerated from November to December and the Fed "really does want to see that fall, because that's the last bit of inflation we need to fall," Navellier said.

Horizon's Ladner, on the other hand, said that the Fed itself had signaled that housing inflation would remain sticky, thus it is unlikely to pay much attention to it. Ladner said he is mostly focused on non-housing services-related inflation. "There's a lot of clarity on what's happening with goods inflation -- it's obviously coming down," Ladner said.

Complicating the picture, the January report will see the Bureau of Labor Statistics introduce new weightings for its calculation of the CPI for the coming year. For this year, the bureau has changed its methodology from using consumption data during a two-year period to only one year to weight the CPI components.

It means that the 2023 CPI report will be only based on expenditure data in 2021, when the spending was more heavily weighted toward goods consumption instead of services, according to Richard de Chazal, macro analyst at William Blair.

The January data will in turn also be weighted more towards goods expenditures, which had been moderating, de Chazal wrote in a Friday note.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Inflation Data Rocked the U.S. Stock Market in 2022: What Investors Need to Know About Tuesday's Reading
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nInflation Data Rocked the U.S. Stock Market in 2022: What Investors Need to Know About Tuesday's Reading\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2023-02-13 15:40
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

Few things moved the U.S. stock market last year like inflation data and the next reading is due this week.

Under the spotlight is the January consumer price index, which is set to be released at 8:30 am Eastern on Tuesday. Traders are expecting the data to provide more clues on whether the Federal Reserve may pause its interest rate hikes later this year in its combat with inflation that was running at a 40-year high last year.In fact, CPI data publication days have been among the most volatile for stocks for the past year. When the August inflation data arrived hotter than expected on Sept. 13, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite plunged 4.3% and 5.2%, respectively, their largest single-day drop in 2022, according to Dow Jones market data.By contrast, when the October CPI data was released on Nov. 10, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite rallied over 5.5% and 7.3%, respectively, recording their largest single day rally in 2022.Intraday volatility tends to be significant as well during CPI days in recent months. When the September data was released on Oct. 13, the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged nearly 1,500 points from its trough to peak, recording one of the biggest intraday swings for the index in recent years. The inflation data for January and the following months especially matters, as it may point to whether the Fed could successfully steer the U.S. economy to a \"soft landing,\" where inflation falls while unemployment remains low, according to Scott Ladner, chief investment officer at Horizon Investments.Earlier this month, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said for the first time that \"the disinflationary process\" is under way. He reiterated the point in the past week, saying in an interview that \"the disinflationary process, the process of getting inflation down, has begun and it's begun in the goods sector, which is about a quarter of our economy.\"Still, \"the reality is we're going to react to the data, so if we continue to get, for example, strong labor-market reports or higher inflation reports, it may well be the case that we have do more and raise rates more than is priced in,\" he added.Powell has been sending a message that as long as inflation continues to ease, the Fed will allow economic growth to remain robust, according to Horizon's Ladner. That being said, the market is not as scared of CPI reports anymore, as the annual rate of inflation had fallen for six months in a row, said Brian Overby, senior markets strategist at Ally. \"The market used to be so intently nervous about CPI,\" Overby said.Read:Traders brace for a blowup as cost of protection for U.S. stocks hits highest level since OctoberHowever, some uncertainty remains. \"I think most economists and policymakers just kind of assume that it will be a one way development in terms of inflation from here on now, but that might not be the case,\" Megan Greene, global chief economist at the Kroll Institute, told MarketWatch in a phone interview. The data comes after the stock market's 2023 rally stalled in the past week. The Nasdaq Composite saw a 2.4% fall, ending a string of five straight weekly gains, while the S&P 500 shed 1.1% and the Dow lost 0.2%. Stocks remain up solidly for the new year.Economists polled by the Wall Street Journal forecast a 0.4% increase in the January CPI, which would slow the year-over-year rate to 6.2% from 6.5% in December. Year-over-year CPI peaked at a roughly 40-year high of 9.1% last summer. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, is expected to rise 0.3% in January, with the year-over-year rate at 5.4% versus 5.7% in December.Jay Hatfield, chief executive at Infrastructure Capital Management, said he is concerned that the core CPI might print hotter than expected.\"What's been driving inflation down has been the volatile component of used cars. And our data shows used cars inflation is actually going up and not down,\" Hatfield said. Meanwhile, the way that the Bureau of Labor Statistics calculates shelter costs tends to lead the number to print higher, Hatfield said.Louis Navellier, founder and chief investment officer at Navellier & Associates, said he is paying particular attention to owners' equivalent rent, which is part of the shelter component of CPI. It's rise accelerated from November to December and the Fed \"really does want to see that fall, because that's the last bit of inflation we need to fall,\" Navellier said.Horizon's Ladner, on the other hand, said that the Fed itself had signaled that housing inflation would remain sticky, thus it is unlikely to pay much attention to it. Ladner said he is mostly focused on non-housing services-related inflation. \"There's a lot of clarity on what's happening with goods inflation -- it's obviously coming down,\" Ladner said.Complicating the picture, the January report will see the Bureau of Labor Statistics introduce new weightings for its calculation of the CPI for the coming year. The January data will in turn also be weighted more towards goods expenditures, which had been moderating, de Chazal wrote in a Friday note.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":95,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9939829136,"gmtCreate":1662085197926,"gmtModify":1676536804786,"author":{"id":"4120529718145852","authorId":"4120529718145852","name":"Glendons 4QFY2022. However, a potential acceleration of Fed rate hikes, high recession probabilities in the US, Europe and stubborn inflation increases downside risks to this status quo,â he writes.

âIndeed, during the global financial crisis (GFC) it took just three quarters for NPLs to rise from 1.5% to 2.5% and specific provisions (SP) jumped nearly two times between 1QFY2008-4QFY2009. Similarly, during the offshore and marine (O&M) crisis, SPs increased nearly three times between 1QFY2016- 4QFY2017. While Chinaâs re-opening is a positive, how much of an offset this could provide is so far unclear,â he adds, estimating that credit charges could rise to 24 basis points (bps) to 26 bps in FY2023 to FY2024 compared to just 15 bps in FY2022.

Limited upside catalysts to banks

In his March 10 report, the analyst points out that the sectorâs risk-reward is now âlargely balancedâ as the banks continue to report âresilientâ operations with âstrong capital levels, elevated margins and a wealth management turnaroundâ that should see the banks through the âcurrent tough macro environmentâ.

He adds that he sees the banksâ net interest margins (NIMs) remaining âhigher for longerâ following their record growth in FY2022, but also notes that their growth may taper off.

âWith further hikes [from the US Federal Reserve or US Fed] forecasted, margins are set to remain elevated, which should keep net interest income (NII) supported even if loan growth disappoints,â says Wickramasinghe.

âHowever, we expect the pace of NIM expansion to decelerate sharply (+8 bps y-o-y FY2023) as funding competition heats up driving deposit costs higher. Since then, both companies have been prioritizing onefficiency and trying to scale back on their over hired employees. Yet, Meta has been way more efficient and quicker in scaling back. In Q4, Meta had already decreased their headcount, while Alphabet on the other hand was still growing headcount. Meta's actions got rewarded immensely and outperformed the S&P 500 by more than 60% sincemy last article. Reward

Meta won back bullish investor sentiment by cutting costs and by not losing attention of their strong core business. The stock was absurdly low priced compared to the cash cow it is. In Q4, the company showed investors it can keep growing the family of apps monthly active people. Although in America and Europe growth is stagnant, emerging countries in Asia (Vietnam, India,...) and South-America should not be forgotten. Lot of those countries have yet to see a digitalization boom.

However, as value investors, the stock price is much less interesting, than it was in November. The fundamentals are now closer to fair value and spending is high in an unprofitable metaverse business. At this point, the outcome of the metaverse spending has become increasingly more important to take in mind. Therefore, the risk vs reward balance is now relatively neutral for me.

On the other hand, Alphabet got a possible new competitor in the search engine battle. Microsoft is after market share with a combined engine of Bing and ChatGPT. ChatGPT is the brand new AI, that seems to know all answers and can bring it to you in a conversational interaction. People were in love on first sight. Nevertheless, Investors of Alphabet were not so happy. The stock price took some serious hits, which makes it interesting for value investors, since so far the fundamentals haven't changed.

It is good to know that this is not the first time, that Bing aka Microsoft has tried to get into the search engine competition.Partnershipswith Yahoo! and Facebook did not make it successful and Google kept a powerful position.

Next to that Investors seem to forget the investments Alphabet has done over the past years. Alphabet was one of thefirst companies to invest in AI. Back in 2014, the company spent $10 million on Dark Blue Labs & Vision Factory, which is now integrated in DeepMind. Further, Alphabet has its own conversational AI bot namedLaMDA, which is built on the Transformer neural network architecture. Transformer was invented by Google Research and has also helped building ChatGPT. Google gains more data than any other company and should easily replicate ChatGPT withBard(based on LaMDA).

Takeaway

For me, Alphabet is the clear choice to invest my money right now. I have trimmed my Meta position by 50% on the 3th of February. On the other hand, I have been buying more shares of Alphabet. Currently, I hold a 10.3% allocation in Alphabet and 2.3% allocation in Meta.

Alphabet offers me less risks and similar if not better rewards going forward. The company is not behind in the AI game and has a strong position going forward. Of course, it will always be difficult to stay on top of the game, nonetheless Alphabet's investments has been in the right sectors.

The company's balance sheet is sitting on $113 billion in cash and short term investments. This gives more than enough options for future investments and buying back shares at these prices. In addition, two notable investors, Li Lu and Seth Klarman have increased their stake in Alphabet by respectively 168% and 190%. The PE of 20 is rather low compared to the average of the last years, so the bearish sentiment offers a great opportunity in one of the strongest moat businesses in the world.

I remain my Strong Buy rating for Alphabet and downgrade Meta to a Hold.

","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Alphabet Vs.
