The conglomerate just disclosed its investments in other companies as of the end of the third quarter, and one name — and one industry — stands out.</p><p>In its 13F filing with the the Securities and Exchange Commission on Nov. 14, Berkshire disclosed investments in 50 stocks as of Sept. 30 with a combined market value of $296.1 billion.</p><p>Berkshire opened three new stock positions during the third quarter:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e011b3feadae73a4180377fc089fb6a5\" tg-width=\"808\" tg-height=\"217\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>The 13F filing doesn’t say exactly when the shares were purchased, but Berkshire built up its $4.1 billion position in Taiwan Semiconductor          TSM after the semiconductor industry had fallen hard. Semiconductor manufacturing has traditionally been a cyclical business and TSM is the highest-volume producer of computer chips in the world.</p><blockquote>“  Our goal is more modest: We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.”</blockquote><blockquote>— Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett in his 1986 annual letter to shareholders.</blockquote><p>Semiconductor stocks tumbled as investors perceived the group had entered a down cycle. The iShares Semiconductor ETF <a href=\"https://www.marketwatch.com/story/semiconductor-stocks-have-bounced-from-2022-lows-and-analysts-expect-upside-of-at-least-28-in-the-next-year-11667917200?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\">hit its 2022 closing low</a> on  Oct. 14 when it was down 44% for the year, before rising 25% through Nov. 14.</p><p>When SOXX hit bottom, Taiwan Semiconductor had been hit even harder, with a 46% decline.</p><p>Taiwan Semiconductor fell to its 2022 low on Nov. 3 when it was down 49% for the  year. Berkshire built its position in TSM some time between June 30, when the stock was down 35% for 2022, and Sept. 30, when it was down 41% for the year.</p><p>It appears Buffett’s timing was excellent, following a part of the long-term strategy he discussed in his annual <a href=\"https://berkshirehathaway.com/letters/1986.html\" target=\"_blank\">letter to shareholders</a> that was included with Berkshire’s 1986 annual report. Buffett explained that market disruptions were unpredictable.</p><p>“Our goal is more modest: We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful,” he wrote.</p><h2>Other stocks Berkshire added to, sold or trimmed</h2><p>During the third quarter, Berkshire added to its holdings of the following stocks. They are sorted by the market value of the holdings as of Sept. 30:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f873df7c27692e7f55fa6d3e60dccda1\" tg-width=\"797\" tg-height=\"324\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>While Berkshire added to its holdings of Paramount Global PARA  and Celanese Corp. CALB, China&#39;s third largest electric-vehicle battery maker, will keep riding the tailwind of China&#39;s electric vehicle boom -- though rising costs and geopolitics pose risks.</p><p>CALB&#39;S IPO could make it one of the biggest deals this year in an otherwise quiet period -- media reports suggest it is seeking $2 billion although the company has yet to publicly disclose how much it wants to raise. Nonetheless its selling point for investors is clear: It will be supercharged by the booming EV market in China, and globally.</p><p>In the first eight months of 2022 sales of EVs in China, including plug-in hybrids, rose 120% from the previous year, according to the China Passenger Car Association. Nearly one in three cars sold in China in August was an EV. That has created a similar surge in the amount of batteries installed in cars, according to the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance.</p><p>CALB is far behind market leader Contemporary Amperex Technology and BYD, which makes batteries for its own cars, but it is gaining market share. The company had around 5.4% of the world&#39;s EV battery market in July, ranking it sixth globally, according to SNE Research. That compared with 3.4% a year ago. In comparison, CATL has around a third of the global market, while BYD&#39;s market share is 16%. China&#39;s battery market is more than half of the world&#39;s total.</p><p>CALB could benefit from customers trying to diversify their supplier base. The company has been expanding capacity rapidly to meet demand. Its revenue is expected to nearly quadruple this year, according to a report by Huatai, the IPO sponsor. And it aims to continue its aggressive expansion.</p><p>One big risk is geopolitics. Companies controlled by China&#39;s state defense and aerospace company Aviation Industry Corporation of China co-founded CALB in 2015. AVIC, which is under U.S. sanctions for its military ties, has since reduced its stake but it still indirectly owns around 10% of CALB. A worsening China-U.S. relationship could potentially drag CALB into the crossfire.</p><p>Another is rising raw material costs. CALB&#39;s gross margin fell to 5.5% in 2021, compared with 13.6% in 2020 as prices of battery materials like lithium have gone through the roof. As supply has yet to catch up with demand, material costs could remain elevated for quite a while. CALB will need to try to soften the blow with larger economies of scale.</p><p>EV sales are revving up into a higher gear. However, for Chinese EV upstart Nio, consumer cultural factors could also impose a significant headwind on NIO stock.As the various consequences of climate change and the economic burden of rising gasoline prices coalesced, electric vehicles became attractive. Under this framework, relative EV upstarts like China-based Nio (NYSE:NIO) enjoyed substantial rewards. However, as the global consumer market enters a different paradigm, expensive vehicle brands without established pedigree may become a liability. I am bearish on NIO stock.Credit belongs to TipRanks contributor Steve Anderson for recognizing the signs of a sector slowdown. While the big Chinese EV manufacturers like Nio, Xpeng (NYSE:XPEV), and Li Auto (NASDAQ:LI) disclosed delivery numbers, none of them stood out for providing substantively encouraging figures. While year-over-year comparisons pinged positively, regional economic data actually presented a dark cloud over the proceedings.Sure enough, when Nio released its financial disclosure for the second quarter of 2022, management raised some eyebrows. Nio incurred an earnings loss of $0.19 per share, in contrast to the loss of $0.06 in the year-ago quarter. Notably, the red ink expanded despite the EV maker improving deliveries.Still, NIO stock managed to swing higher following the Q2 report. In particular, market observers liked that the EV specialist managed to post revenue generated from vehicle sales of $1.43 billion, up 21% on a year-over-year basis.Additionally, management upgraded its outlook for Q3, expecting deliveries ranging between 31,000 to 33,000 vehicles. This would imply a year-over-year increase of between 26.8% and 35%. Also, total revenue could come in between $1.92 billion and $2.03 billion, representing a growth of 31% to 38.7%.Despite some solid performances in Q2, the underlying projections for NIO stock may be too optimistic, given current circumstances.Economic Woes Will Likely Impede NIO StockWhile many, if not most, market analysts love to tout the ambitious aphorism that electric vehicles are the future, the reality is this future depends on economic cooperation. If outside circumstances negatively affect consumer sentiment, it won’t matter how clean and efficient EVs are. Everything comes down to the bottom line. In that sense, China’s economic woes represent arguably the biggest concern for NIO stock.In June of this year, TipRanks reporter Amit Singhnoted a deceleration in China’s economy. More recently, a September article byBloombergwarned that the world’s second-largest economic power is bracing for a slowdown that could be even worse than 2020. Of course, that’s an alarming headline considering the catastrophic COVID-19 pandemic.If that wasn’t troubling enough for NIO stock, The Wall Street Journal reported in August that China’s central bank was no longer interested in implementing the aggressive measures it deployed in the past to bolster economic performances. Now, Beijing’s concerns about rising debt and diminishing returns from spending killed the appetite for dovish monetary policies.Therefore, the optimistic projections about NIO stock run into a credibility problem. If multiple high-level sources are sounding the alarm bells for China’s economic viability, the idea that EVs – which tend to be pricier than their combustion-powered counterparts – will somehow thrive seems unrealistic.Consumer Culture Differences Could Hurt Nio StockIn late July, I mentioned that in the casino industry, eastern and western gamblers approach the sector differently. If the east/west cultural divide imparts significant differences in revenue allocation for gambling centers, it stands to reason that such a divide can also impact other consumer segments. Specifically, Chinese EV investments like NIO stock can end up hurting because they command a premium but without a justifying heritage.Though some circumstances are changing, for the most part, Chinese consumers tend to gravitate toward American chain restaurants because of the status symbol effect. While getting a burger and fries is a nothing-burger in America, in China, such a practice was exotic for decades.Now, consider the elements involved in an EV purchase. In the U.S., the average price of a new EV stands at nearly $63,000. In relation to the median U.S. household income, an average EV represents about 90% of median earnings.Here, Chinese and American consumers may feel the same. If they’re going to fork over that much of their earnings for a vehicle, it should mean something. Otherwise, it might be better to simply get something cheaper.However, the problem for NIO stock is that the underlying company has not yet proven that it can sustainably deliver cheap EVs. With a retained earnings loss of over $8.7 billion at the end of 2021, Nio can’t sustainably deliver expensive EVs to market.What is a Good Price for NIO Stock?Turning to Wall Street, NIO stock has a Strong Buy consensus rating based on nine Buys assigned in the past three months. The average NIO price target is $31.84, implying 52.1% upside potential.Takeaway: Consumer Sentiment is Fading and Will Pressure EV SalesWhen NIO stock first materialized, the upside potential stemmed from the underlying massive consumer base and broader interest in EV integration.
