The second is the tightening regulatory framework, the first cannot exist without the last. It has returned 126% year-to-date and 24% in the past month. While it reported an operating loss of $35.6 million, its operating income grew to $3.07 billion in 2021. As Bitcoin prices fell off a cliff in 2022, Coinbase’s sales declined to $3.19 billion in 2022, while its operating losses were close to $2.7 billion last year. In addition to Bitcoin prices, Coinbase’s share price will also depend on the outcome of its lawsuit with the SEC or the Securities and Exchange Commission. SEC is a U.S.-based regulatory body that charged Coinbase with operating its trading platform as an unregistered national securities exchange, broker, and clearing agency. Additionally, it claimed Coinbase failed to register the offer and sale of its crypto asset staking-as-a-service program. Alternatively, Coinbase has challenged these claims and maintained that none of the digital assets that trade on its platform can be classified as a security. Subscription sales include revenue from Bitcoin rewards, custodian fees, and interest income. It suggests transaction sales account for 50.8% of total revenue in Q1, compared to 87% in the prior-year period. The thing is, Upstart was only founded in 2012 and didn&#39;t really ramp up loan volumes until the pandemic. The data that Upstart&#39;s models are trained on encompass a tiny subset of potential economic environments. They lose their value in uncharted waters.</p><p>Upstart&#39;s loans started to greatly underperform expectations in 2021. The situation has been improving as the company factors in macroeconomic considerations, but loan volumes have fallen off a cliff. Upstart&#39;s revenue plunged 52% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2022, and loan volumes dropped 62%.</p><p>Upstart expects things to get worse this year. The company guided for first-quarter revenue of just $100 million, down from $147 million in the fourth quarter of 2022. To make matters worse, Coinbase reported a net <em>loss</em> of $2.6 billion in 2022, compared to <em>positive</em> net income of $3.6 billion in 2021.</p><p>While some of the financial results can be attributed to macro events such as the downfall of FTX, Coinbase&#39;s key metrics shed plenty of light on investor lack of enthusiasm for crypto. For example, total assets on the platform declined from $278 billion in 2021 to $80 billion by December 2022. Unsurprisingly, trading volume fell in lockstep, decreasing from $1.7 billion in 2021 to $830 million in 2022.  </p><p>Given the lackluster financial performance, it&#39;s difficult to understand why Coinbase stock is up 98% year to date, and nearly 14% in just the past five trading days. Given the company&#39;s Q4 and 2022 earnings results, such a dramatic increase in the stock may be overdone.While some investors may believe Coinbase is undervalued, a stock price doubling in just four months is hard to justify.</p><h2>What does the road ahead look like?</h2><p>From March 21 to March 23, Coinbase stock cratered by 27%. The primary catalyst was the announcement that Coinbase is being investigated by the SEC over potential securities violations. More specifically, the Wells notice outlined that the SEC is concerned about some of Coinbase&#39;s listed digital assets, as well as its crypto staking service (Coinbase Earn), and its Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Wallet products.  </p><p>This shouldn&#39;t be entirely surprising. In February, the SEC fined Coinbase competitor, Kraken, $30 million and forced it to shut down its staking service, asserting that it was offering unregistered securities on its platform. Staking is like putting your money in a bank and earning rewards.</p><p>Per Coinbase&#39;s blog, Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal stated:</p><blockquote>The bottom line remains: Coinbase does not list securities or offer products to our customers that are securities. Coinbase has a rigorous process to analyze and review each digital asset before making it available on our exchange -- a process that we shared in detail with the SEC as part of our public listing.</blockquote><p>Honestly, it appears that Coinbase&#39;s argument revolves around a technicality. Coinbase, technically, does not list <em>securities</em>.Similar to assets like oil and wheat, crypto tokens are considered commodities in some quarters. Whether the SEC has oversight or jurisdiction over commodities and where these assets are traded is a bit of a grey area. </p><p>Nonetheless, Coinbase&#39;s response strikes me as pretty weak. The company has almost 10,000 different tokens on its exchange. And while it does promote more mainstream, large-cap cryptos like Bitcoin, it also lists a number of questionable assets.For example, Coinbase&#39;s asset roster includes <strong>Dogecoin</strong> (DOGE 0.30%). As a reminder, Dogecoin, for whatever reason, has earned a soft spot in the heart of serial entrepreneur Elon Musk. Despite its cute logo of a Shiba Inu puppy, Dogecoin does not provide any real utility. It&#39;s a meme. While there is money to be made from these altcoins, it is unbelievably risky. However, in my view, it could be viewed as predatory to list the number of tokens available on the platform, especially when most of them are not widely known and probably have no value.</p><p>At the end of the day, it&#39;s pretty obvious that crypto at large needs some broader oversight. And since Coinbase is the poster child of public crypto companies, the SEC may find (or create) a way to become more involved. Alternatively, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) could lead the charge. </p><p>For investors who own Coinbase stock, the prudent thing to do is to hold. Although the announcement of a government investigation can be unnerving, Coinbase isn&#39;t at risk of being delisted, and panic selling won&#39;t solve much. However, it is critical for investors to understand that this isn&#39;t an opportunity to buy the dip. The stock could be in for some big declines, especially if earnings prove disappointing or the SEC imposes an enormous fine. The core measure of inflation is undoubtedly better than where they were, but the Fed isn&#39;t likely to take much comfort in one month of better data. Core goods and services are still relatively high, even after modest improvement.</p><p>Core services for June were up 6.1% on a y/y basis, and goods were still up 1.3%. The big surprise was the core inflation reading, which reached 4.8%, vs. analysts looking for an increase of 5.0%.On the surface, the easy part of the inflation cycle appears to have been completed, but where inflation goes from here will be open to debate. The core measure of inflation is undoubtedly better than where they were, but the Fed isn't likely to take much comfort in one month of better data. Core goods and services are still relatively high, even after modest improvement.Core services for June were up 6.1% on a y/y basis, and goods were still up 1.3%. Both are still much higher than the historical average from 2000 until the beginning of 2020, when services averaged 2.8%, and goods averaged around 0%.BloombergOverall, the core CPI of 4.8% was the lowest reading since the fall of 2021 and, indeed, has fallen quite a bit from its high of 6.6% in September. But again, it has been a slow long road, and disinflation isn't the same as deflation. Disinflation means prices are rising slower; deflation means prices are falling. Core CPI still needs to lose another 2.8 percentage points from here to get back to levels it was before the pandemic began.BloombergThe CPI non-seasonally adjusted rose by 0.3% in June and was in line with data in May. When looking at the trend of the non-seasonally adjusted number, it has increased by 3% over the past 12 months, an annualized 5.7% over the past six months, and annualized 4.5% over the past three months. To finish the year with a 3% number, the non-seasonally adjusted index would have to move sideways for the year's balance. It would need to see a repeat of what happened in the second half of 2022. Again, I think it's just more to the point that the challenges for inflation become more complicated from here.BloombergIt will put into question the fantasy the stock market has had now for some time that inflation is just going to vanish and melt away. The CPI swaps market suggests that the CPI inflation y/y rises in July to around 3.2% and then 3.4% in August.BloombergOver the past six months, CPI swaps have re-rated the inflation rate higher, with values for July rising from 2.3% to 2.4% for August and making inflation a tricky and challenging measure to forecast, even for the market.BloombergThe Cleveland Fed, which has had a history of overstating the CPI, suggests headline inflation of 3.35% in July and 4.9% for core CPI. But again, it provides us with data points indicating the disinflation trend gets bumpier and less consistent as we move forward.BloombergIt's tough to understand how the market interoperates data on the day of because of positioning, which may have been looking for core CPI data that came in higher than expected. But initially, the dollar index is falling very hard, and the two-year rate is falling by 12 bps, while equities are rising. But it will be essential to watch how the dollar and rates continue to trade and, more importantly, whether crucial support levels are held.Additionally, it will be essential to monitor the spreads for rates because currently, with the two-year rate falling more than the 10-year rate, it has allowed the distance between the 10- and the two-year rate to rise to -88 bps. This spread had hit a low of -110 basis points on July 3.
