And the semiconductor sector in general is seeing weakness: Another chip giant that’s a play on artificial intelligence, Broadcom Inc., posted better-than-expected overall results on Thursday but came up short in its semiconductor division.</p><p>So what’s next for Nvidia shares? Mizuho desk-based analyst Jordan Klein wrote Friday that the stock “is not ripping back to $130+ in coming weeks.” It closed Friday at just south of $103.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The sector on the whole seems “stuck in the mud at best right now outside of a slew of better ‘soft landing’ macro data points over next few weeks,” according to Klein. There are also concerns about margin trends in the near future.</p><p>Plus, there are broader market pressures, with the S&amp;P 500 seeing its worst week since March 10, 2023. And the semiconductor sector in general is seeing weakness: Another chip giant that’s a play on artificial intelligence, Broadcom Inc., posted better-than-expected overall results on Thursday but came up short in its semiconductor division.</p><p>So what’s next for Nvidia shares? The AI GPU company provided remarkably strong guidance despite issues with new chips. This raises whether the dip wasn&#39;t actually related to a subpoena from the DoJ and not supposedly disappointing guidance. My investment thesis is more Bullish on the chip company in the short term until the margin issue creeps up on Nvidia in the upcoming years.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3dfa44878b4cfc55d436e39dedc047a9\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"440\"/></p><p>Source: Finviz</p><p></p><h2 id=\"id_2974629315\">Big Beats</h2><p>Nvidia just reported a quarter with revenues of $30.0 billion smashing consensus estimates by $1.3 billion, yet the markets sold off the stock. The AI GPU company even guided to FQ3 revenues of $32.5 billion, compared to $31.7 billion consensus estimates.</p><p>The stock is down in part due to buy-side sales estimates up at $33 to $35 billion as highlighted by influential tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo as follows:</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/f37a4533f801542c20c991c2a1518bfd\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"651\"/></p><p>Source: Twitter/X</p><p></p><p>Either way, the justification for selling off Nvidia doesn&#39;t add up. The stock ended September 3 down 16% over the 4 trading days since the earnings report back on August 28.</p><p>Nvidia just guided October quarterly revenues ~$3.8 billion above the consensus estimates for the July quarter. Here again is where analysts and investors get caught focusing on the company beating targets and not the relative growth rates. The current consensus target for FQ3 amounting to nearly 82% growth, while the chip company consistently beats analyst estimates by $1+ billion.</p><p>The below consensus targets highlight how the consensus revenue estimates for Nvidia have risen over time. Starting in 2023, analysts had FY27 revenues at only $50 billion, and the estimates are now up to $207 billion. The FY27 estimates are up ~32% over the last 6 months.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/69d6cf7eaa1add49d04984989048c3bf\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"465\"/></p><p>Source: Seeking Alpha</p><p></p><p>Clearly, the revenue numbers for Nvidia remain strong.</p><h3 id=\"id_3184166848\">No Competitive Threat</h3><p>A primary reason to turn more bullish on Nvidia in the short term is that <strong>Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.</strong> (AMD) has been unable to ramp up AI GPU sales and <strong>Intel Corporation</strong> (INTC) is talking about AI investments still years away from paying off. The former chip giant is in the midst of another restructuring that will distract the business from taking on Nvidia.</p><p>AMD just reported Q2 GPU sales only topped $1 billion. Nvidia just added $3.7 billion in additional GPU data center revenue in the last quarter alone and the guidance suggests another $1.7 billion in additional revenues, while AMD is still just adding millions each quarter.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/751595672293a25616076012784d92e0\" tg-width=\"959\" tg-height=\"591\"/></p><p>Source: I/O Fund</p><p></p><p>Analysts now have AMD reaching $5 billion in GPU sales this year, with New Street Research placing a goal of only $20 billion by 2027. Nvidia has already topped an annual rate of $100 billion, suggesting AMD is only grabbing scraps at this point and has no threat to impact margins for possibly years.</p><p>Without any major threat, the Blackwell delay won&#39;t impact Nvidia to a great extent. On the FQ2 &#39;25 earnings call, the company made the following statement regarding the expectations for the new Blackwell GPUs shipping several billion dollars in FQ4:</p><blockquote><p>Hopper demand is strong and Blackwell is widely sampling. We executed a change to the Blackwell GPU mass to improve production yields. Blackwell production ramp is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter and continue into fiscal year &#39;26.</p><p>In Q4, we expect to ship several billion dollars in Blackwell revenue. Hopper shipments are expected to increase in the second half of fiscal 2025. Hopper supply and availability have improved. Demand for Blackwell platforms is well above supply, and we expect this to continue into next year.</p></blockquote><p>Nvidia reported margins actually dipped slightly in FQ2, with non-GAAP margins dipping 3.2 percentage points from FQ1 to 75.7%. The operating margins were still an extremely strong 66.4% with operating income jumping $1.9 billion sequentially due to a limited boost in operating expenses to only $2.8 billion.</p><p>Gross margins only dipped due to inventory provisions for low-yielding Blackwell material. Naturally, Nvidia isn&#39;t seeing any pricing pressure, with AMD unable to achieve higher volumes to meet surging GPU demand.</p><p>Nvidia only trades at 30x FY26 EPS targets. The consensus estimates have EPS growing at a 40% clip next fiscal year to reach nearly $4 per share.</p><p>Nvidia should rally on these numbers. The big issue is the transition to more normalized margins in the future, where gross margins hardly top 60% and operating margins might fail to hold 40%.</p><p>Based on the updated estimates for FY28 (2027), Nvidia could actually see EPS dip over the course of the next 3 years. The consensus estimates are for FY28 revenues of $227 billion, nearly doubling over the period, yet normalized gross margins of 60% with operating margins of 45% yield an EPS of only $3.46 versus the current EPS target of $3.96 for FY26.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/874e837231d8ec0e72c8e60d88aa204d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"249\"/></p><p>Source: Stone Fox Capital</p><p></p><p>Even the 45% operating margin is extremely elevated, but Nvidia is only operating at a nearly $11 billion annual opex rate. The chip company would have to ramp up spending to $34 billion to reach this target level.</p><p>As the estimates highlight, even if revenues surge to $300 billion in FY28, EPS estimates hardly rise on lower margins. The key is how long can Nvidia maintain these gross margins that appear excessive while hardly spending on opex.</p><h3 id=\"id_3318921105\">DoJ Case</h3><p>Based on the stock falling over $11 and nearly 10% to start trading in September, the after-hours news of a DoJ subpoena was the likely culprit for the major dip. The regulators are apparently reviewing whether the chip company violated antitrust laws by making it harder for customers to switch to competitors.</p><p>From the outside, whether the DoJ has a case is difficult to tell. The major question is how Nvidia is allegedly preventing competitors from switching to other competitors which lack chip supply.</p><p>Unless AMD and the DoJ have a case where Nvidia has blocked the company from obtaining additional manufacturing supply, the DoJ wouldn&#39;t appear to have a case. AMD hasn&#39;t openly complained about such a scenario.</p><p>Nvidia apparently e-mailed <em>Bloomberg</em> the following statement, suggesting the company wins orders based on merit:</p><blockquote><p>Nvidia wins on merit, as reflected in our benchmark results and value to customers, who can choose whatever solution is best for them.</p></blockquote><p>Investors can&#39;t know the actual outcome of any DoJ case, but one can look to past cases involving tech giants. <strong>Alphabet Inc.</strong> (GOOG) (GOOGL) was found to violate antitrust law with their default placement on iPhones, yet analysts don&#39;t foresee a remedy for possibly years. Ironically, Google didn&#39;t lose the trial over search default deals until AI became a threat to the search business.</p><p>In essence, the DoJ would still have to bring a case against Nvidia and take the company to trial, which could take years to play out. Meanwhile, Alphabet recently hit an all-time high above $190 while the DoJ trial has been ongoing since 2020, along with cases against other tech giants.</p><p>Investors might get a chance to buy Nvidia near $100. The stock would only trade at 25x FY26 EPS targets, with growth rates still exceeding this multiple.</p><h2 id=\"id_1832331817\">Takeaway</h2><p>The key investor takeaway is that Nvidia is still firing on all cylinders. The stock dip, whether due to the DoJ subpoena or worries about guidance, is an opportunity to load back up on the AI GPU stock. Here again is where analysts and investors get caught focusing on the company beating targets and not the relative growth rates. The current consensus target for FQ3 amounting to nearly 82% growth, while the chip company consistently beats analyst estimates by $1+ billion.The below consensus targets highlight how the consensus revenue estimates for Nvidia have risen over time. Starting in 2023, analysts had FY27 revenues at only $50 billion, and the estimates are now up to $207 billion. (AMD) has been unable to ramp up AI GPU sales and Intel Corporation (INTC) is talking about AI investments still years away from paying off. The former chip giant is in the midst of another restructuring that will distract the business from taking on Nvidia.AMD just reported Q2 GPU sales only topped $1 billion. Nvidia just added $3.7 billion in additional GPU data center revenue in the last quarter alone and the guidance suggests another $1.7 billion in additional revenues, while AMD is still just adding millions each quarter.Source: I/O FundAnalysts now have AMD reaching $5 billion in GPU sales this year, with New Street Research placing a goal of only $20 billion by 2027. Nvidia has already topped an annual rate of $100 billion, suggesting AMD is only grabbing scraps at this point and has no threat to impact margins for possibly years.Without any major threat, the Blackwell delay won't impact Nvidia to a great extent. On the FQ2 '25 earnings call, the company made the following statement regarding the expectations for the new Blackwell GPUs shipping several billion dollars in FQ4:Hopper demand is strong and Blackwell is widely sampling. We executed a change to the Blackwell GPU mass to improve production yields. Blackwell production ramp is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter and continue into fiscal year '26.In Q4, we expect to ship several billion dollars in Blackwell revenue. Hopper shipments are expected to increase in the second half of fiscal 2025. Hopper supply and availability have improved. Demand for Blackwell platforms is well above supply, and we expect this to continue into next year.Nvidia reported margins actually dipped slightly in FQ2, with non-GAAP margins dipping 3.2 percentage points from FQ1 to 75.7%. The operating margins were still an extremely strong 66.4% with operating income jumping $1.9 billion sequentially due to a limited boost in operating expenses to only $2.8 billion.Gross margins only dipped due to inventory provisions for low-yielding Blackwell material. Naturally, Nvidia isn't seeing any pricing pressure, with AMD unable to achieve higher volumes to meet surging GPU demand.Nvidia only trades at 30x FY26 EPS targets. The consensus estimates have EPS growing at a 40% clip next fiscal year to reach nearly $4 per share.Nvidia should rally on these numbers. The big issue is the transition to more normalized margins in the future, where gross margins hardly top 60% and operating margins might fail to hold 40%.Based on the updated estimates for FY28 (2027), Nvidia could actually see EPS dip over the course of the next 3 years. The consensus estimates are for FY28 revenues of $227 billion, nearly doubling over the period, yet normalized gross margins of 60% with operating margins of 45% yield an EPS of only $3.46 versus the current EPS target of $3.96 for FY26.Source: Stone Fox CapitalEven the 45% operating margin is extremely elevated, but Nvidia is only operating at a nearly $11 billion annual opex rate. The chip company would have to ramp up spending to $34 billion to reach this target level.As the estimates highlight, even if revenues surge to $300 billion in FY28, EPS estimates hardly rise on lower margins. The key is how long can Nvidia maintain these gross margins that appear excessive while hardly spending on opex.DoJ CaseBased on the stock falling over $11 and nearly 10% to start trading in September, the after-hours news of a DoJ subpoena was the likely culprit for the major dip. The regulators are apparently reviewing whether the chip company violated antitrust laws by making it harder for customers to switch to competitors.From the outside, whether the DoJ has a case is difficult to tell. The major question is how Nvidia is allegedly preventing competitors from switching to other competitors which lack chip supply.Unless AMD and the DoJ have a case where Nvidia has blocked the company from obtaining additional manufacturing supply, the DoJ wouldn't appear to have a case. AMD hasn't openly complained about such a scenario.Nvidia apparently e-mailed Bloomberg the following statement, suggesting the company wins orders based on merit:Nvidia wins on merit, as reflected in our benchmark results and value to customers, who can choose whatever solution is best for them.Investors can't know the actual outcome of any DoJ case, but one can look to past cases involving tech giants. Alphabet Inc. (GOOG) (GOOGL) was found to violate antitrust law with their default placement on iPhones, yet analysts don't foresee a remedy for possibly years. Ironically, Google didn't lose the trial over search default deals until AI became a threat to the search business.In essence, the DoJ would still have to bring a case against Nvidia and take the company to trial, which could take years to play out. Meanwhile, Alphabet recently hit an all-time high above $190 while the DoJ trial has been ongoing since 2020, along with cases against other tech giants.Investors might get a chance to buy Nvidia near $100. The stock would only trade at 25x FY26 EPS targets, with growth rates still exceeding this multiple.TakeawayThe key investor takeaway is that Nvidia is still firing on all cylinders. The stock dip, whether due to the DoJ subpoena or worries about guidance, is an opportunity to load back up on the AI GPU stock. From one year ago today through the present day, shares are up an amazing 86.9%. This move higher has been driven in large part by optimism regarding how the company will benefit from the AI boom. But with optimism comes a risk of overvaluation. You see, back in early May of this year, I wrote an article that took a neutral stance on the company. Over the span of four days around that time, the stock had dropped nearly 19% at its worst. This was in spite of the fact that the overall financial performance reported by the business for the first quarter of its 2024 fiscal year indicated that management was achieving attractive growth.</p><p>I pointed out, in that article, that investors would likely be making a mistake by buying that plunge. And this was because of how expensive shares were. Much to my surprise, things have gone a lot better than anticipated. Shares are up 33.6% since then, at a time when the S&amp;P 500 is up only 3%. As disappointing as this is to me, I do think that we are reaching the point where the stock might very well warrant a downgrade to something more bearish like a ‘sell’. Because of improved growth, particularly higher guidance for this year, I&#39;m not pulling that trigger just yet. But it won&#39;t take much more to justify such a downgrade.</p><h2 id=\"id_469433668\">Management has really surprised</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/efbd3d7ee7cc3cd3932b95ab96852f2f\" alt=\"Author - SEC EDGAR Data\" title=\"Author - SEC EDGAR Data\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"257\"/><span>Author - SEC EDGAR Data</span></p><p>When I last wrote about Palantir Technologies earlier this year, we only had data covering through the first quarter of 2024. That data now extends through the second quarter of this year. By every measure that matters, management has done a fine job. Take revenue for starters. During the second quarter, revenue totaled $678.1 million. That&#39;s 34.3% above the $533.3 million the company reported just one year earlier. For much of its early history, Palantir Technologies built its business around government agencies. But over the past couple of years now, management has been emphasizing the potential role that the commercial side of the economy could play in pushing revenue and cash flows higher.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/5d975f70cd8b2e319794b0ce5d20238c\" alt=\"Palantir Technologies\" title=\"Palantir Technologies\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"333\"/><span>Palantir Technologies</span></p><p>During the second quarter, the company generated $307 million in revenue from commercial activities. That&#39;s 32.3% above the $232 million reported at the same time last year. In the US specifically, commercial revenue growth was an astounding 54.4%, growing from $103 million to $159 million. On the commercial side of things, the company finally hit 295 customers in the US during its most recent quarter. That&#39;s up from 262 in the first quarter of this year, and it dwarfs the 161 that the company had in the second quarter of 2023. Its total global commercial customer count hit an all-time high of 467 during the quarter. That&#39;s well above the 302 reported for the second quarter of 2023.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4ae3e2af685cb12ddfc74c3095fd23a1\" alt=\"Palantir Technologies\" title=\"Palantir Technologies\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"335\"/><span>Palantir Technologies</span></p><p>This is not to say that the company isn&#39;t continuing to grow on the government side as well. Government revenue in the second quarter of this year was $371 million. That happens to be 22.8% above the $302 million reported one year earlier. In the US, government revenue jumped 23.6% year over year, climbing from $225 million to $278 million. When you add on to this the commercial customers that the company has, its total customer count hit 593 in the most recent quarter. This stacks up nicely against the 554 reported in the first quarter and the 421 reported in the second quarter of 2023.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/37ef4a186b578f870d73d0351734d204\" alt=\"Palantir Technologies\" title=\"Palantir Technologies\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"331\"/><span>Palantir Technologies</span></p><p>During the second quarter alone, management closed 96 deals that were worth, individually, $1 million or more. 33 of these were worth at least $5 million. And 27 of them were worth $10 million or more. This is quite a haul. And, so long as nothing significantly negative comes out of the woodwork, it should translate to additional revenue growth for the foreseeable future. A lot of these contracts seem to be related to AI. In fact, during the second quarter, one of the contracts that it signed was a five year, $480 million deal, with the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office for the purpose of scaling AI and machine learning capabilities across the entire US Department of Defense.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/d274ec5c229288d4c136f0695f00b93f\" alt=\"Palantir Technologies\" title=\"Palantir Technologies\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"333\"/><span>Palantir Technologies</span></p><p>With revenue climbing, profits and cash flows have followed suit. Net income skyrocketed from $28.1 million in the second quarter of 2023 to $134.1 million in the second quarter of this year. After making certain adjustments, net income nearly doubled from $119.5 million to $221.4 million. Operating cash flow expanded from $90.2 million to $144.2 million. On an adjusted basis, where we strip out changes in working capital, we get an increase from $141.2 million to $284.3 million. And finally, EBITDA for the business expanded from $143.4 million to $261.6 million.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/160be1b1dc9a3a2a8e5fa2f3f89dfaee\" alt=\"Author - SEC EDGAR Data\" title=\"Author - SEC EDGAR Data\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"258\"/><span>Author - SEC EDGAR Data</span></p><p>In the chart above, you can see financial results for the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023. Clearly, things are going quite well for the company, with revenue, profits, and cash flows, all rising significantly on a year-over-year basis. In fact, things are going so well that management decided to increase guidance for the year. Previous guidance had called for revenue of between $2.677 billion and $2.689 billion. But now, that number has been pushed up to between $2.742 billion and $2.750 billion. At the midpoint, that&#39;s an increase of about $63 million.</p><p>On the bottom line, management now anticipates adjusted income from operations of between $966 million and $974 million. The prior expected range was between $868 million and $880 million. At the midpoint, that&#39;s an improvement of about $96 million, or 11%. If we assume that other profitability metrics will rise at the same rate, then we would get adjusted operating cash flow of $1.08 billion and EBITDA of $1.02 billion. These would be quite a bit higher than the $705.9 million and $666.1 million, respectively, generated in 2023.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3fa2a69ef1ff4f8024a06acb823c1fb9\" alt=\"Author - SEC EDGAR Data\" title=\"Author - SEC EDGAR Data\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"289\"/><span>Author - SEC EDGAR Data</span></p><p>Using these figures, you can see how shares of the company are valued on a forward basis in the chart above. You can also see the valuation using results from 2023. I don&#39;t know about you, but I consider these to be incredibly high multiples. Now, to be fair, this is backed by rapid growth. But even if we assume that strong growth for the company will persist for the foreseeable future, this is a difficult valuation to get excited about.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/6df0fa2788d80170db97d5fbb824a1f8\" alt=\"Author - SEC EDGAR Data\" title=\"Author - SEC EDGAR Data\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"167\"/><span>Author - SEC EDGAR Data</span></p><p>In the table above, you can see what should happen if revenue and cash flows for the company grow at a 20% annualized rate from 2025 through 2027. You can see the trading multiples of the company in those cases. Even in 2027, shares do look very pricey. However, profits this year are expected to be about 53.3% above what they were last year. So a 20% annualized growth rate might not be aggressive enough to assume. In the first table below, I repeated this analysis using a 30% annualized growth rate. And in the table below that, I did the same thing with the assumption that revenue and cash flows grow at 40% per annum. I would argue that, under the most aggressive scenario, the stock finally becomes reasonably attractive in 2027. Back in the first quarter of 2023, the company had no debt on its books, and it enjoyed $2.93 billion worth of cash and cash equivalents. This number expanded to $3.87 billion by the end of the first quarter of this year. And by the end of the second quarter, it had grown even more to just a hair under $4 billion. This does provide flexibility and safety for investors. It also provides the company capital, with which to grow. While this situation can probably justify a slight premium, the multiples that we are looking at now still look absurd.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/18d9cd33e74f76d1842eb2bde0addcad\" alt=\"Author - SEC EDGAR Data\" title=\"Author - SEC EDGAR Data\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"297\"/><span>Author - SEC EDGAR Data</span></p><h2 id=\"id_1461090088\">Takeaway</h2><p>Truth be told, I&#39;m not ready to take a bearish stance on Palantir Technologies just yet. The company is a growth machine and its balance sheet is robust. However, even the healthiest companies can reach the point of being overvalued. I do think that shares are very lofty at this point in time. From one year ago today through the present day, shares are up an amazing 86.9%. This move higher has been driven in large part by optimism regarding how the company will benefit from the AI boom. But with optimism comes a risk of overvaluation. You see, back in early May of this year, I wrote an article that took a neutral stance on the company. Over the span of four days around that time, the stock had dropped nearly 19% at its worst. This was in spite of the fact that the overall financial performance reported by the business for the first quarter of its 2024 fiscal year indicated that management was achieving attractive growth.I pointed out, in that article, that investors would likely be making a mistake by buying that plunge. And this was because of how expensive shares were. Much to my surprise, things have gone a lot better than anticipated. Shares are up 33.6% since then, at a time when the S&P 500 is up only 3%. As disappointing as this is to me, I do think that we are reaching the point where the stock might very well warrant a downgrade to something more bearish like a ‘sell’. Because of improved growth, particularly higher guidance for this year, I'm not pulling that trigger just yet. But it won't take much more to justify such a downgrade.Management has really surprisedAuthor - SEC EDGAR DataWhen I last wrote about Palantir Technologies earlier this year, we only had data covering through the first quarter of 2024. That data now extends through the second quarter of this year. By every measure that matters, management has done a fine job. Take revenue for starters. During the second quarter, revenue totaled $678.1 million. That's 34.3% above the $533.3 million the company reported just one year earlier. For much of its early history, Palantir Technologies built its business around government agencies. But over the past couple of years now, management has been emphasizing the potential role that the commercial side of the economy could play in pushing revenue and cash flows higher.Palantir TechnologiesDuring the second quarter, the company generated $307 million in revenue from commercial activities. That's 32.3% above the $232 million reported at the same time last year. In the US specifically, commercial revenue growth was an astounding 54.4%, growing from $103 million to $159 million. On the commercial side of things, the company finally hit 295 customers in the US during its most recent quarter. That's up from 262 in the first quarter of this year, and it dwarfs the 161 that the company had in the second quarter of 2023. Its total global commercial customer count hit an all-time high of 467 during the quarter. That's well above the 302 reported for the second quarter of 2023.Palantir TechnologiesThis is not to say that the company isn't continuing to grow on the government side as well. Government revenue in the second quarter of this year was $371 million. That happens to be 22.8% above the $302 million reported one year earlier. In the US, government revenue jumped 23.6% year over year, climbing from $225 million to $278 million. When you add on to this the commercial customers that the company has, its total customer count hit 593 in the most recent quarter. This stacks up nicely against the 554 reported in the first quarter and the 421 reported in the second quarter of 2023.Palantir TechnologiesDuring the second quarter alone, management closed 96 deals that were worth, individually, $1 million or more. 33 of these were worth at least $5 million. And 27 of them were worth $10 million or more. This is quite a haul. And, so long as nothing significantly negative comes out of the woodwork, it should translate to additional revenue growth for the foreseeable future. A lot of these contracts seem to be related to AI. In fact, during the second quarter, one of the contracts that it signed was a five year, $480 million deal, with the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office for the purpose of scaling AI and machine learning capabilities across the entire US Department of Defense.Palantir TechnologiesWith revenue climbing, profits and cash flows have followed suit. Net income skyrocketed from $28.1 million in the second quarter of 2023 to $134.1 million in the second quarter of this year. After making certain adjustments, net income nearly doubled from $119.5 million to $221.4 million. Operating cash flow expanded from $90.2 million to $144.2 million. On an adjusted basis, where we strip out changes in working capital, we get an increase from $141.2 million to $284.3 million. And finally, EBITDA for the business expanded from $143.4 million to $261.6 million.Author - SEC EDGAR DataIn the chart above, you can see financial results for the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023. Clearly, things are going quite well for the company, with revenue, profits, and cash flows, all rising significantly on a year-over-year basis. In fact, things are going so well that management decided to increase guidance for the year. Previous guidance had called for revenue of between $2.677 billion and $2.689 billion. But now, that number has been pushed up to between $2.742 billion and $2.750 billion. At the midpoint, that's an increase of about $63 million.On the bottom line, management now anticipates adjusted income from operations of between $966 million and $974 million. The prior expected range was between $868 million and $880 million. At the midpoint, that's an improvement of about $96 million, or 11%. If we assume that other profitability metrics will rise at the same rate, then we would get adjusted operating cash flow of $1.08 billion and EBITDA of $1.02 billion. You can also see the valuation using results from 2023. I don't know about you, but I consider these to be incredibly high multiples. Now, to be fair, this is backed by rapid growth. But even if we assume that strong growth for the company will persist for the foreseeable future, this is a difficult valuation to get excited about.Author - SEC EDGAR DataIn the table above, you can see what should happen if revenue and cash flows for the company grow at a 20% annualized rate from 2025 through 2027. You can see the trading multiples of the company in those cases. Even in 2027, shares do look very pricey. However, profits this year are expected to be about 53.3% above what they were last year. So a 20% annualized growth rate might not be aggressive enough to assume. In the first table below, I repeated this analysis using a 30% annualized growth rate. And in the table below that, I did the same thing with the assumption that revenue and cash flows grow at 40% per annum. I would argue that, under the most aggressive scenario, the stock finally becomes reasonably attractive in 2027. This does provide flexibility and safety for investors. It also provides the company capital, with which to grow. From one year ago today through the present day, shares are up an amazing 86.9%. This move higher has been driven in large part by optimism regarding how the company will benefit from the AI boom. But with optimism comes a risk of overvaluation. You see, back in early May of this year, I wrote an article that took a neutral stance on the company. Over the span of four days around that time, the stock had dropped nearly 19% at its worst. This was in spite of the fact that the overall financial performance reported by the business for the first quarter of its 2024 fiscal year indicated that management was achieving attractive growth.I pointed out, in that article, that investors would likely be making a mistake by buying that plunge. And this was because of how expensive shares were. Much to my surprise, things have gone a lot better than anticipated. Shares are up 33.6% since then, at a time when the S&P 500 is up only 3%. As disappointing as this is to me, I do think that we are reaching the point where the stock might very well warrant a downgrade to something more bearish like a ‘sell’. Because of improved growth, particularly higher guidance for this year, I'm not pulling that trigger just yet. But it won't take much more to justify such a downgrade.Management has really surprisedAuthor - SEC EDGAR DataWhen I last wrote about Palantir Technologies earlier this year, we only had data covering through the first quarter of 2024. That data now extends through the second quarter of this year. By every measure that matters, management has done a fine job. Take revenue for starters. During the second quarter, revenue totaled $678.1 million. That's 34.3% above the $533.3 million the company reported just one year earlier. For much of its early history, Palantir Technologies built its business around government agencies. But over the past couple of years now, management has been emphasizing the potential role that the commercial side of the economy could play in pushing revenue and cash flows higher.Palantir TechnologiesDuring the second quarter, the company generated $307 million in revenue from commercial activities. That's 32.3% above the $232 million reported at the same time last year. In the US specifically, commercial revenue growth was an astounding 54.4%, growing from $103 million to $159 million. On the commercial side of things, the company finally hit 295 customers in the US during its most recent quarter. That's up from 262 in the first quarter of this year, and it dwarfs the 161 that the company had in the second quarter of 2023. Its total global commercial customer count hit an all-time high of 467 during the quarter. That's well above the 302 reported for the second quarter of 2023.Palantir TechnologiesThis is not to say that the company isn't continuing to grow on the government side as well. Government revenue in the second quarter of this year was $371 million. That happens to be 22.8% above the $302 million reported one year earlier. In the US, government revenue jumped 23.6% year over year, climbing from $225 million to $278 million. When you add on to this the commercial customers that the company has, its total customer count hit 593 in the most recent quarter. This stacks up nicely against the 554 reported in the first quarter and the 421 reported in the second quarter of 2023.Palantir TechnologiesDuring the second quarter alone, management closed 96 deals that were worth, individually, $1 million or more. 33 of these were worth at least $5 million. And 27 of them were worth $10 million or more. This is quite a haul. And, so long as nothing significantly negative comes out of the woodwork, it should translate to additional revenue growth for the foreseeable future. A lot of these contracts seem to be related to AI. In fact, during the second quarter, one of the contracts that it signed was a five year, $480 million deal, with the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office for the purpose of scaling AI and machine learning capabilities across the entire US Department of Defense.Palantir TechnologiesWith revenue climbing, profits and cash flows have followed suit. Net income skyrocketed from $28.1 million in the second quarter of 2023 to $134.1 million in the second quarter of this year. After making certain adjustments, net income nearly doubled from $119.5 million to $221.4 million. Operating cash flow expanded from $90.2 million to $144.2 million. On an adjusted basis, where we strip out changes in working capital, we get an increase from $141.2 million to $284.3 million. And finally, EBITDA for the business expanded from $143.4 million to $261.6 million.Author - SEC EDGAR DataIn the chart above, you can see financial results for the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023. Clearly, things are going quite well for the company, with revenue, profits, and cash flows, all rising significantly on a year-over-year basis. In fact, things are going so well that management decided to increase guidance for the year. Previous guidance had called for revenue of between $2.677 billion and $2.689 billion. But now, that number has been pushed up to between $2.742 billion and $2.750 billion. At the midpoint, that's an increase of about $63 million.On the bottom line, management now anticipates adjusted income from operations of between $966 million and $974 million. The prior expected range was between $868 million and $880 million. At the midpoint, that's an improvement of about $96 million, or 11%. If we assume that other profitability metrics will rise at the same rate, then we would get adjusted operating cash flow of $1.08 billion and EBITDA of $1.02 billion. These would be quite a bit higher than the $705.9 million and $666.1 million, respectively, generated in 2023.Author - SEC EDGAR DataUsing these figures, you can see how shares of the company are valued on a forward basis in the chart above. You can also see the valuation using results from 2023. I don't know about you, but I consider these to be incredibly high multiples. Now, to be fair, this is backed by rapid growth. But even if we assume that strong growth for the company will persist for the foreseeable future, this is a difficult valuation to get excited about.Author - SEC EDGAR DataIn the table above, you can see what should happen if revenue and cash flows for the company grow at a 20% annualized rate from 2025 through 2027. You can see the trading multiples of the company in those cases. Even in 2027, shares do look very pricey. However, profits this year are expected to be about 53.3% above what they were last year. So a 20% annualized growth rate might not be aggressive enough to assume. In the first table below, I repeated this analysis using a 30% annualized growth rate. And in the table below that, I did the same thing with the assumption that revenue and cash flows grow at 40% per annum. I would argue that, under the most aggressive scenario, the stock finally becomes reasonably attractive in 2027. Back in the first quarter of 2023, the company had no debt on its books, and it enjoyed $2.93 billion worth of cash and cash equivalents. This number expanded to $3.87 billion by the end of the first quarter of this year. And by the end of the second quarter, it had grown even more to just a hair under $4 billion. This does provide flexibility and safety for investors. It also provides the company capital, with which to grow. Nvidia shares lost 13.9% this week; they fell 16.1% in the week ended Sept. 2, 2022.In all, Nvidia erased $406 billion from its market value on the week, the most for any U.S. company on record, and more than the combined market capitalizations of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Qualcomm Inc. Nvidia now has a roughly $2.5 trillion market cap.Nvidia’s earnings last week revealed a few items that the market could still be digesting. For one, the company posted a smaller beat than usual, raising questions about how long Nvidia will be able to deliver the sort of eye-popping performance that turned it into a Wall Street darling over the past two years. There are also concerns about margin trends in the near future.Plus, there are broader market pressures, with the S&P 500 seeing its worst week since March 10, 2023. This raises whether the dip wasn&#39;t actually related to a subpoena from the DoJ and not supposedly disappointing guidance. My investment thesis is more Bullish on the chip company in the short term until the margin issue creeps up on Nvidia in the upcoming years.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3dfa44878b4cfc55d436e39dedc047a9\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"440\"/></p><p>Source: Finviz</p><p></p><h2 id=\"id_2974629315\">Big Beats</h2><p>Nvidia just reported a quarter with revenues of $30.0 billion smashing consensus estimates by $1.3 billion, yet the markets sold off the stock. The AI GPU company even guided to FQ3 revenues of $32.5 billion, compared to $31.7 billion consensus estimates.</p><p>The stock is down in part due to buy-side sales estimates up at $33 to $35 billion as highlighted by influential tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo as follows:</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/f37a4533f801542c20c991c2a1518bfd\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"651\"/></p><p>Source: Twitter/X</p><p></p><p>Either way, the justification for selling off Nvidia doesn&#39;t add up. The stock ended September 3 down 16% over the 4 trading days since the earnings report back on August 28.</p><p>Nvidia just guided October quarterly revenues ~$3.8 billion above the consensus estimates for the July quarter. Here again is where analysts and investors get caught focusing on the company beating targets and not the relative growth rates. The current consensus target for FQ3 amounting to nearly 82% growth, while the chip company consistently beats analyst estimates by $1+ billion.</p><p>The below consensus targets highlight how the consensus revenue estimates for Nvidia have risen over time. Starting in 2023, analysts had FY27 revenues at only $50 billion, and the estimates are now up to $207 billion. The FY27 estimates are up ~32% over the last 6 months.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/69d6cf7eaa1add49d04984989048c3bf\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"465\"/></p><p>Source: Seeking Alpha</p><p></p><p>Clearly, the revenue numbers for Nvidia remain strong.</p><h3 id=\"id_3184166848\">No Competitive Threat</h3><p>A primary reason to turn more bullish on Nvidia in the short term is that <strong>Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.</strong> (AMD) has been unable to ramp up AI GPU sales and <strong>Intel Corporation</strong> (INTC) is talking about AI investments still years away from paying off. The former chip giant is in the midst of another restructuring that will distract the business from taking on Nvidia.</p><p>AMD just reported Q2 GPU sales only topped $1 billion. Nvidia just added $3.7 billion in additional GPU data center revenue in the last quarter alone and the guidance suggests another $1.7 billion in additional revenues, while AMD is still just adding millions each quarter.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/751595672293a25616076012784d92e0\" tg-width=\"959\" tg-height=\"591\"/></p><p>Source: I/O Fund</p><p></p><p>Analysts now have AMD reaching $5 billion in GPU sales this year, with New Street Research placing a goal of only $20 billion by 2027. Nvidia has already topped an annual rate of $100 billion, suggesting AMD is only grabbing scraps at this point and has no threat to impact margins for possibly years.</p><p>Without any major threat, the Blackwell delay won&#39;t impact Nvidia to a great extent. On the FQ2 &#39;25 earnings call, the company made the following statement regarding the expectations for the new Blackwell GPUs shipping several billion dollars in FQ4:</p><blockquote><p>Hopper demand is strong and Blackwell is widely sampling. We executed a change to the Blackwell GPU mass to improve production yields. Blackwell production ramp is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter and continue into fiscal year &#39;26.</p><p>In Q4, we expect to ship several billion dollars in Blackwell revenue. Hopper shipments are expected to increase in the second half of fiscal 2025. Hopper supply and availability have improved. Demand for Blackwell platforms is well above supply, and we expect this to continue into next year.</p></blockquote><p>Nvidia reported margins actually dipped slightly in FQ2, with non-GAAP margins dipping 3.2 percentage points from FQ1 to 75.7%. The operating margins were still an extremely strong 66.4% with operating income jumping $1.9 billion sequentially due to a limited boost in operating expenses to only $2.8 billion.</p><p>Gross margins only dipped due to inventory provisions for low-yielding Blackwell material. Naturally, Nvidia isn&#39;t seeing any pricing pressure, with AMD unable to achieve higher volumes to meet surging GPU demand.</p><p>Nvidia only trades at 30x FY26 EPS targets. The consensus estimates have EPS growing at a 40% clip next fiscal year to reach nearly $4 per share.</p><p>Nvidia should rally on these numbers. The big issue is the transition to more normalized margins in the future, where gross margins hardly top 60% and operating margins might fail to hold 40%.</p><p>Based on the updated estimates for FY28 (2027), Nvidia could actually see EPS dip over the course of the next 3 years. The consensus estimates are for FY28 revenues of $227 billion, nearly doubling over the period, yet normalized gross margins of 60% with operating margins of 45% yield an EPS of only $3.46 versus the current EPS target of $3.96 for FY26.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/874e837231d8ec0e72c8e60d88aa204d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"249\"/></p><p>Source: Stone Fox Capital</p><p></p><p>Even the 45% operating margin is extremely elevated, but Nvidia is only operating at a nearly $11 billion annual opex rate. The chip company would have to ramp up spending to $34 billion to reach this target level.</p><p>As the estimates highlight, even if revenues surge to $300 billion in FY28, EPS estimates hardly rise on lower margins. The key is how long can Nvidia maintain these gross margins that appear excessive while hardly spending on opex.</p><h3 id=\"id_3318921105\">DoJ Case</h3><p>Based on the stock falling over $11 and nearly 10% to start trading in September, the after-hours news of a DoJ subpoena was the likely culprit for the major dip. The regulators are apparently reviewing whether the chip company violated antitrust laws by making it harder for customers to switch to competitors.</p><p>From the outside, whether the DoJ has a case is difficult to tell. The major question is how Nvidia is allegedly preventing competitors from switching to other competitors which lack chip supply.</p><p>Unless AMD and the DoJ have a case where Nvidia has blocked the company from obtaining additional manufacturing supply, the DoJ wouldn&#39;t appear to have a case. AMD hasn&#39;t openly complained about such a scenario.</p><p>Nvidia apparently e-mailed <em>Bloomberg</em> the following statement, suggesting the company wins orders based on merit:</p><blockquote><p>Nvidia wins on merit, as reflected in our benchmark results and value to customers, who can choose whatever solution is best for them.</p></blockquote><p>Investors can&#39;t know the actual outcome of any DoJ case, but one can look to past cases involving tech giants. <strong>Alphabet Inc.</strong> (GOOG) (GOOGL) was found to violate antitrust law with their default placement on iPhones, yet analysts don&#39;t foresee a remedy for possibly years. Ironically, Google didn&#39;t lose the trial over search default deals until AI became a threat to the search business.</p><p>In essence, the DoJ would still have to bring a case against Nvidia and take the company to trial, which could take years to play out. Meanwhile, Alphabet recently hit an all-time high above $190 while the DoJ trial has been ongoing since 2020, along with cases against other tech giants.</p><p>Investors might get a chance to buy Nvidia near $100. The stock would only trade at 25x FY26 EPS targets, with growth rates still exceeding this multiple.</p><h2 id=\"id_1832331817\">Takeaway</h2><p>The key investor takeaway is that Nvidia is still firing on all cylinders. The stock dip, whether due to the DoJ subpoena or worries about guidance, is an opportunity to load back up on the AI GPU stock. The stock ended September 3 down 16% over the 4 trading days since the earnings report back on August 28.Nvidia just guided October quarterly revenues ~$3.8 billion above the consensus estimates for the July quarter. Here again is where analysts and investors get caught focusing on the company beating targets and not the relative growth rates. The current consensus target for FQ3 amounting to nearly 82% growth, while the chip company consistently beats analyst estimates by $1+ billion.The below consensus targets highlight how the consensus revenue estimates for Nvidia have risen over time. Starting in 2023, analysts had FY27 revenues at only $50 billion, and the estimates are now up to $207 billion. (AMD) has been unable to ramp up AI GPU sales and Intel Corporation (INTC) is talking about AI investments still years away from paying off. The former chip giant is in the midst of another restructuring that will distract the business from taking on Nvidia.AMD just reported Q2 GPU sales only topped $1 billion. Nvidia just added $3.7 billion in additional GPU data center revenue in the last quarter alone and the guidance suggests another $1.7 billion in additional revenues, while AMD is still just adding millions each quarter.Source: I/O FundAnalysts now have AMD reaching $5 billion in GPU sales this year, with New Street Research placing a goal of only $20 billion by 2027. Nvidia has already topped an annual rate of $100 billion, suggesting AMD is only grabbing scraps at this point and has no threat to impact margins for possibly years.Without any major threat, the Blackwell delay won't impact Nvidia to a great extent. On the FQ2 '25 earnings call, the company made the following statement regarding the expectations for the new Blackwell GPUs shipping several billion dollars in FQ4:Hopper demand is strong and Blackwell is widely sampling. We executed a change to the Blackwell GPU mass to improve production yields. Blackwell production ramp is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter and continue into fiscal year '26.In Q4, we expect to ship several billion dollars in Blackwell revenue. Hopper shipments are expected to increase in the second half of fiscal 2025. Hopper supply and availability have improved. Demand for Blackwell platforms is well above supply, and we expect this to continue into next year.Nvidia reported margins actually dipped slightly in FQ2, with non-GAAP margins dipping 3.2 percentage points from FQ1 to 75.7%. The operating margins were still an extremely strong 66.4% with operating income jumping $1.9 billion sequentially due to a limited boost in operating expenses to only $2.8 billion.Gross margins only dipped due to inventory provisions for low-yielding Blackwell material. Naturally, Nvidia isn't seeing any pricing pressure, with AMD unable to achieve higher volumes to meet surging GPU demand.Nvidia only trades at 30x FY26 EPS targets. The consensus estimates have EPS growing at a 40% clip next fiscal year to reach nearly $4 per share.Nvidia should rally on these numbers. The big issue is the transition to more normalized margins in the future, where gross margins hardly top 60% and operating margins might fail to hold 40%.Based on the updated estimates for FY28 (2027), Nvidia could actually see EPS dip over the course of the next 3 years. The consensus estimates are for FY28 revenues of $227 billion, nearly doubling over the period, yet normalized gross margins of 60% with operating margins of 45% yield an EPS of only $3.46 versus the current EPS target of $3.96 for FY26.Source: Stone Fox CapitalEven the 45% operating margin is extremely elevated, but Nvidia is only operating at a nearly $11 billion annual opex rate. The key is how long can Nvidia maintain these gross margins that appear excessive while hardly spending on opex.DoJ CaseBased on the stock falling over $11 and nearly 10% to start trading in September, the after-hours news of a DoJ subpoena was the likely culprit for the major dip. The regulators are apparently reviewing whether the chip company violated antitrust laws by making it harder for customers to switch to competitors.From the outside, whether the DoJ has a case is difficult to tell. The major question is how Nvidia is allegedly preventing competitors from switching to other competitors which lack chip supply.Unless AMD and the DoJ have a case where Nvidia has blocked the company from obtaining additional manufacturing supply, the DoJ wouldn't appear to have a case. AMD hasn't openly complained about such a scenario.Nvidia apparently e-mailed Bloomberg the following statement, suggesting the company wins orders based on merit:Nvidia wins on merit, as reflected in our benchmark results and value to customers, who can choose whatever solution is best for them.Investors can't know the actual outcome of any DoJ case, but one can look to past cases involving tech giants. Alphabet Inc. (GOOG) (GOOGL) was found to violate antitrust law with their default placement on iPhones, yet analysts don't foresee a remedy for possibly years. Ironically, Google didn't lose the trial over search default deals until AI became a threat to the search business.In essence, the DoJ would still have to bring a case against Nvidia and take the company to trial, which could take years to play out. Meanwhile, Alphabet recently hit an all-time high above $190 while the DoJ trial has been ongoing since 2020, along with cases against other tech giants.Investors might get a chance to buy Nvidia near $100. The stock would only trade at 25x FY26 EPS targets, with growth rates still exceeding this multiple.TakeawayThe key investor takeaway is that Nvidia is still firing on all cylinders.
