Rocket Lab just posted news on their website about a $90 million contract award from the U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command. They're tasked with designing and building two geostationary satellites that will host the Heimdall space domain awareness payload.
This marks their first satellite production program for GEO. They'll act as the prime contractor and handle everything end-to-end: spacecraft design and manufacture, integration of the in-house Heimdall optical payload, launch integration, and on-orbit operations for up to five years.
The satellites will be built on their Lightning bus, which is already in production for other programs. This contract builds on a previous SSC prototype program for the Heimdall payloads. The new $90 million award transitions the effort from payload prototyping to delivering operational space vehicles.
Spacecraft assembly and testing will be done at their Long Beach facility.
