Cathie Wood Predicts Starship Launches Could Generate $10 Trillion Annually, Elon Musk Responds With Three-Word Endorsement

The commercial potential of SpaceX's Starship program is being pushed to unprecedented levels. Cathie Wood, CEO of ARK Invest, has unveiled a striking forecast suggesting each Starship launch could yield roughly $1 billion in annual revenue, and when extrapolated against frequency targets outlined by Elon Musk, the program's yearly revenue might climb as high as $10 trillion by the end of this decade.

The projection has quickly captured market-wide attention. Musk himself weighed in on Wood's social media post with a succinct three-word reply: "It's not impossible," adding fresh fuel to an already polarizing revenue estimate.

Where the revenue forecast originates

Wood's assessment hinges on Musk's aggressive launch cadence ambitions. The SpaceX founder previously stated on social media that the company aims to achieve more than 30 Starship launches per day by 2030, translating to roughly 10,000 launches annually, a figure he noted would still be modest next to commercial airline traffic.

Wood connects this launch capability directly to Starlink's monetization prospects. According to ARK Invest data, Starlink's cumulative in-orbit bandwidth has expanded steadily in recent years. Paired with the next-generation V3 satellites, which offer significantly greater per-satellite bandwidth, the sheer lift capacity of Starship compared to existing rockets could dramatically increase the network capacity deployable per mission, expanding Starlink's service reach and revenue pool.

Simultaneously, the deployment of V3 satellites is imminent, which will subject Starship's commercial viability to real-world scrutiny. SpaceX Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen has confirmed that the 14th Starship flight will carry production-model V3 satellites, marking what he describes as the "first revenue-generating flight" for the vehicle. This shift from high-frequency testing toward sustainable commercial missions will now be validated by actual financial data.

From Starlink bandwidth to $1 billion per launch

Wood's forecast builds on an analytical framework developed by Sam Korus, ARK Invest's Director of Strategy and Investment. Using data from 2023 through 2025, Korus calculated Starlink's cumulative in-orbit bandwidth at 190, 335, and 606 Tbps respectively, corresponding to communications revenue of $3.9 billion, $7.6 billion, and $11.4 billion for those years.

From this data, revenue per Tbps of bandwidth works out to roughly $21 million, $23 million, and $19 million annually across the three periods. Applying the most recent figure of $19 million per Tbps to the approximately 61 Tbps capacity that a single Starship launch could deploy yields the conclusion that each mission could generate around $1 billion in annual revenue.

The core of this calculation lies in the V3 satellite's capacity. SpaceX has disclosed that each V3 satellite provides 1 Tbps of downlink bandwidth, and Starship can deploy up to 60 V3 satellites per launch, representing over 60 Tbps of additional bandwidth, or more than 20 times the throughput of a Falcon 9 mission.

Korus acknowledges that as Starlink's bandwidth supply expands, revenue per Tbps may gradually decline, meaning the $1 billion figure is not a fixed revenue level. However, even with falling per-unit bandwidth revenue, the much larger satellite deployment scale could still drive sustained growth in Starlink communications revenue.

Can high-frequency launches support a $10 trillion revenue goal?

Building on Korus's framework, Wood extends the per-launch revenue potential by linking it to Musk's long-term launch targets. She noted on social media that Musk's plan for 10,000 Starship launches per year by 2030 would imply annual Starship revenue approaching $10 trillion.

This figure stands in stark contrast to Musk's earlier revenue guidance. In June of this year, Musk suggested SpaceX might "perhaps" reach around $1 trillion in revenue by 2030, while the company's current-year revenue stands at $18.67 billion. The $10 trillion projection therefore remains an external extrapolation grounded in launch frequency and bandwidth monetization assumptions, rather than official SpaceX guidance.

That said, the revenue thesis is moving into a validation phase. Musk confirmed this week that SpaceX will begin deploying the next-generation Starlink V3 constellation this month, noting its eventual bandwidth capacity would exceed the current network of roughly 11,000 satellites by a factor of 100. The company is targeting September 22 for the 14th Starship mission, pending regulatory clearance.

Reaching 10,000 launches per year introduces manufacturing constraints as a critical variable. Musk recently discussed the Raptor 3 engine, advising startups against attempting to build it due to the extreme complexity of its internal architecture, which requires heavily modified metal 3D-printing technology to manufacture.

More significantly, the upcoming 14th flight will carry production-model V3 satellites. As CFO Bret Johnsen noted, this mission will represent Starship's "first revenue-generating flight." With V3 deployment underway, Starship's launch cadence, Starlink's capacity additions, and the revenue conversion per mission will transition from theoretical calculations to empirical verification.
