Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday that a recent round of strong economic data has bought the Fed some time to decide more carefully whether it needs to raise interest rates further to control inflation. 'The biggest issue right now is inflation,' he said. 'But we've had a good run of economic data, and the key now is to see if the cooling is a trend or a blip.'

In addition, Waller said he doesn't think another rate hike would send the U.S. economy into recession, nor would it do much damage to the job market.

Michael Wilson, chief investment officer at Morgan Stanley, said U.S. investors have been too optimistic in the stock market and that this year's rally reflects their view of economic growth, which will be weaker than expected.

Wilson said that while it is common for investors to "swing back and forth" between a soft and a hard landing near the end of the Fed's rate hike cycle, some have questioned the possibility of a soft landing - an outcome that avoids a recession - and such expectations are becoming the prevailing assumption for the economy.
