The Singapore Straits Times Index (STI) has declined 3.18% year-to-date (YTD), reflecting broader economic challenges. However, me remain at 0.19% positive returns. I invested in dividend-yielding stocks like OCBC (O39) and Sheng Siong (OV8) have maintained modest gains, demonstrating the value of a strategic investment approach.

Dividend Stocks as a Hedge

In an uncertain economic climate, I often seek reliable income sources. Stocks like OCBC and Sheng Siong offer attractive dividends, and employing a dollar-cost averaging strategy – buying on dips to reduce their average purchase price.

The recent dip in OCBC's share price can be attributed to global macroeconomic issues and rising interest rates, which reduce the borrowing power of businesses. Nevertheless, I focused on long-term growth remain optimistic about OCBC's potential once interest rates stabilize and business growth resumes.

Sheng Siong: Resilience and Employee Commitment

Despite reporting lower-than-expected revenue in its full-year 2023 earnings report, Sheng Siong remains a well-respected company known for valuing its employees. This positive workplace culture contributes to high employee morale, which translates into excellent customer service.

In an inflationary environment where consumers' purchasing power decreases, government initiatives like the CDC (Community Development Council) voucher program have emerged. As vouchers are often spent on groceries, this could benefit Sheng Siong in the near term.

Investor Takeaway

While the STI's YTD performance may be discouraging, investors focused on sound fundamentals and long-term strategies can navigate the current challenges. Dividend-yielding stocks and dollar-cost averaging offer stability, demonstrating the importance of a well-defined investment approach during market fluctuations.
