Yes, I have sold stock a few times at breakeven. Usually because my assumptions were wrong $Altria(MO)$ Was a good example. Nice dividend, lots of money but selling cigarettes... well it's an industry in decline long term. I got into it because I saw a huge upside selling vapes, but after a lot more research I realised vapes also have harmful consequences. The world has changed significantly but Altria hasn't. There are so many choices when it comes to investing. more often than I like I do buy a stock because I see potential, with Altria I saw the potential to leverage its supply chain a production capability to, we'll do something that has health benefits. But I quickly realised I was dreaming. So got out when the going was good.
It's not always wise to invest in a company just because (for eg) Warren buffet owns it. Remember he probably bought it 20 years ago for IDK 10% of what it's worth now. So maybe his dividend yield is 100% annualised. Why would he sell, for him it's a money machine.
I'm not, on purpose, giving you accurate numbers, just making a point. One man's great decision is another man's worst, depending on the circumstances.
Another example would be Cathy woods selling um I think it was 10.4 million shares of $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ The other day, only to see it surge significantly after she sold. But what if her average price was $50 per share. Maybe she has found something else that will do better going forward. Or it's just too much investment in one company after it surged. There are many many reasons why people sell stocks.
As an emotional investor I try to look beyond the obvious. Someone is selling because the stock is about to tank is one common perception, but ask yourself is that the reality. Warren buffet is holding onto a stock because he believes in it's future? Maybe not, maybe it's just generating such an insane amount of cash, that he really doesn't care if it goes bankrupt tomorrow, every year he gets his entire initial investment back. In that situation why would you sell.
I know I'm exaggerating the extremes here, but as retail investors, well we have to think beyond the obvious. The bigs selling or holding does not necessarily mean they believe or don't believe in the stock. If they are buying though, what price did they buy at, and can you get it for that price too.
Just a thought. What do you all think? Please comment, like and consider following me if this post made you think;)
