JD’s biggest opportunity may lie in what the market is overlooking: the gap between a cheap valuation and sustainable earnings growth.
At around $26.78, JD trades at just 7.2 times its revised 2027 earnings estimate. Yet a low multiple means little if margins keep deteriorating.
The encouraging signs are real. Electronics demand is stabilizing, general merchandise remains resilient, and food-delivery losses are expected to narrow. But rising AI investment and fulfillment costs could absorb much of the operating leverage investors hope to see.
My view: JD is a potential turnaround, not yet a confirmed recovery. The critical catalyst is not simply revenue growth, but whether each additional yuan of sales generates more profit.
If margins stabilize while new-business losses shrink, today's valuation could prove too pessimistic. If not, JD may remain cheap for a reason.
The opportunity is attractive only when improving fundamentals—not low multiples alone—justify the rerating.
