Tech Stocks Tumble in October: Which Beaten-Down Names Are Worth Buying?

Tech stocks have come under pressure in October, with semiconductor and memory names bearing the brunt of the selloff. Some popular stocks have plunged nearly 30% as concerns over AI financing, capital spending and macroeconomic risks intensify. Which stocks now offer the most compelling buying opportunities?

The October selloff has hit semiconductor and memory stocks particularly hard, as rising oil prices, AI financing concerns and uncertainty over investment returns weigh on sentiment. Yet the correction has been far from uniform, with some Big Tech names holding up relatively well while others have plunged nearly 30%.

October's Biggest Losers: Semiconductor and Memory Stocks Lead the Decline

From September 30 through October 22, $Lam Research(LRCX)$   plunged nearly 30%, followed by $SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$   at roughly 28%. $Micron Technology(MU)$   and $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$   fell approximately 20% and 17%, respectively.

Meanwhile, $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ declined around 7% and $Alphabet-C (GOOG.US)$ slipped 5%, while $Microsoft (MSFT.US)$ and $Amazon (AMZN.US)$ remained relatively resilient.

Semiconductors and Memory: MU, SKHY and NVDA Stand Out

Memory stocks have suffered some of the steepest declines, potentially creating attractive valuation opportunities.

$Micron Technology (MU.US)$ has fallen nearly 20% in October, trading at just 4.9 times expected fiscal 2027 earnings. Strong AI-driven demand for HBM and DRAM supports its growth outlook, although investors remain concerned that memory prices and profits may be approaching a cyclical peak.

$SK hynix (SKHY.US)$ also deserves attention given its leadership in HBM technology and strong customer relationships. However, the premium on its U.S.-listed ADRs relative to Korean shares adds valuation risk.

$Lam Research (LRCX.US)$, despite plunging nearly 30%, still trades at approximately 24 times expected fiscal 2027 earnings, with its outlook heavily dependent on equipment orders and customers' capital spending.

Among AI chipmakers, $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ looks relatively attractive at around 21 times forward earnings. $Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US)$ has fallen further, but its earnings growth still needs to materialize, while $Broadcom (AVGO.US)$ continues to command a relatively high valuation premium.

My take: MU offers the most compelling valuation recovery potential, SKHY provides exposure to HBM growth, and NVDA remains our preferred AI chip name.

Big Tech: Alphabet Offers Better Value, Meta Greater Rebound Potential

$Meta Platforms (META.US)$ has declined approximately 11% in October. Despite strong advertising growth, rising AI capital expenditures and potential equity financing have weighed on sentiment. The stock trades at roughly 19 times expected 2027 earnings.

$Alphabet-A (GOOGL.US)$ has fallen around 5%, trading at approximately 16.5 times forward earnings. Its advertising cash flow, Google Cloud growth and in-house AI chips provide multiple earnings drivers.

$Microsoft (MSFT.US)$ and $Amazon (AMZN.US)$ have seen little meaningful pullback this month. Both retain strong business fundamentals, but neither currently offers a substantial selloff-driven valuation discount.

Among Big Tech, I favor GOOGL for its combination of valuation and cash flow. META could offer greater rebound potential, but carries higher financing and capital spending risks.

Which Stocks Are Worth Buying on the Dip?

MU, SKHY, GOOGL and NVDA top of my watchlist. Micron stands out for its low valuation and earnings upside, SK hynix for its HBM leadership, Alphabet for its attractive cash flow and valuation profile, and Nvidia for its competitive position in AI computing.

Meta deserves attention if financing concerns ease, while Lam Research needs clearer evidence of stabilizing equipment demand.

Selective buying opportunities are emerging, but it may be too early to aggressively buy the broader tech dip. Next week's Big Tech earnings will provide another crucial test of AI investment returns. For now, companies with resilient earnings expectations and more reasonable valuations look more attractive than those simply suffering the steepest declines.
