CapEx is outrunning the payoff for now.

Mag 7 just reported another round of solid revenue and earnings, powered by cloud, ads, and AI demand. Yet the real story is the infrastructure arms race: the big four hyperscalers alone are steering toward roughly $750 billion in 2026 CapEx, with more growth flagged for 2027. Quarterly spending already exceeds operating cash flow at Amazon, Alphabet, and Meta in the latest period; only Microsoft still covers it comfortably.

Markets price in sustained high earnings growth and eventual free-cash-flow recovery. That requires the new capacity to convert quickly into higher-margin AI services and productivity gains. History of big buildouts shows returns often lag spending by years, pressuring near-term FCF and multiples even when top-line holds up.

These firms remain extraordinarily profitable and cash-generative at the core. They can fund the spend. Whether CapExkeeps upwith lofty earnings expectations hinges on monetization speed.
