Counterpoint Research has just published its list of the best-selling mobiles of last year, and for yet another year it is a list that is dominated by Apple, which places 8 of its mobiles in the top 10 best sellers.

2022 was a strange year for mobile phones. The end of the pandemic was not as expected, and the semiconductor crisis aggravated the problem, and that is that the numbers for the sale of mobile phones are on a par with what was sold in 2010. Nobody knows what will happen this year and next year, as the market is very close to saturation, since the life of the phone in use is getting longer and longer, and it is expected that better times will arrive to renew it, given the difficult economic situation.

Global Top 10 Best-selling Smartphones Unit Sales Share and Monthly Rankings, 2022

According to Counterpoint’s Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker, the 10 mobiles on the list correspond to 19% of global phone sales in 2022, and their sales figures are very similar to those of last year for these phones, which repeat in the Top Ten.

The 10 mobiles account for 20% of a market in which they cohabit with some 3,600 more, and who share the remaining 80% of global sales among all of them, which is something amazing and a great success for the brand with the bitten apple. . Only the iPhone 13, the champion of the list, alone accounts for 5% of the global market, which is enormous.

There are three interesting things when we look at the ranking. The first is that the “basic” iPhone of 2021 is the best seller and the iPhone 12 also appears in the middle zone. This is due to the price cut these models experience when the successor comes out, but it’s also interesting to see the position of the Max models. According to Counterpoint, iPhone 13 garnered 28% of total iPhone sales in 2022.

Both the 13 Pro Max and 14 Pro Max outsold the Pro versions outright, so Apple may have been right and dropped the Mini model due to users looking for larger phones.

The second is to highlight that the iPhone 14 has been placed above the 14 Pro for the same reason: the size of the screen. The iPhone SE 2022 has made a place for itself on the list thanks to the fact that it is the only compact one and it is a size that is very popular in countries like Japan.

The third is that Apple leaves two places in the Top Ten for two Samsung models: the A03, the most basic on the list and its great success in emerging markets, and the A13, another very cheap entry-level terminal that has achieved a fourth position in the ranking. These two models account for 2.7% of the global market.

According to Counterpoint, in their forecasts for this year, they point out that the different brands will try to create more premium mobiles this year to try to have more market share in that segment by stealing it from Apple, the champion of high-end mobile phones, and the segment which provides a greater inflow of money, not only because it is the most requested, but also because of its higher profit margin, and thus, little by little, it ceases to have such a presence in a mid-range that is in decline and in which most of the movements move. part of the models with presence in the market.

In addition, they also expect companies to reduce the portfolio of their own products so that their own products do not compete with each other and achieve a more transparent market. This would mean stopping releasing so many equivalent mobiles in similar ranges, something that companies like Realme, Samsung or Xiaomi do, which would make it easier to focus their efforts on improving their low-end and premium products.

The Counterpoint consultancy indicates in its annual report that this objective was already met last year, since some 3,600 devices were launched compared to 4,200 in 2021.
