That's understandable, with several of them delivering triple-digit and even four-digit percentage gains.
\n
However, what goes up can come down. Analysts don't expect the online frenzy fueling the ginormous jumps for some of the most popular stocks will be sustainable. Here are three meme stocks that Wall Street thinks will plunge by more than 20% within the next 12 months.
\n
AMC Entertainment
\n
AMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC)ranks as the best-performing meme stock of all. Shares of the movie theater operator have skyrocketed close to 2,500% year to date.
\n
The consensus among analysts, though, is that the stock could lose 90% of its current value. Even the most optimistic analyst surveyed by Refinitiv has a price target for AMC that's more than 70% below the current share price.
\n
But isn't AMC's business picking up? Yep. The easing of restrictions has enabled the company to reopen 99% of its U.S. theaters. AMC could benefit as seating capacity limitations imposed by state and local governments are raised. Thereleases of multiple movies this summerand later this year that are likely to be hits should also help.
\n
However, Wall Street clearly believes that AMC's share price has gotten way ahead of its business prospects. The stock is trading at nearly eight times higher than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
\n
Clover Health Investments
\n
Only a few days ago, it looked like Clover Health Investments(NASDAQ:CLOV)might push AMC to the side as the hottest meme stock. Retail investors viewed Clover as a primeshort squeezecandidate.
\n
Since the beginning of June, shares of Clover Health have jumped more than 65%. Analysts, however, don't expect those gains to last. The average price target for the stock is 25% below the current share price.
\n
Clover Health's valuation does seem to have gotten out of hand. The healthcare stock currently trades at more than 170 times trailing-12-month sales. That's a nosebleed level, especially considering that the company is the subject of investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
\n
Still, Clover Health could deliver improving financial results this year. The company hopes to significantly increase its membership by targeting the original Medicare program. This represents a major new market opportunity in addition to its current Medicare Advantage business.
\n
Sundial Growers
\n
At one point earlier this year, Sundial Growers(NASDAQ:SNDL)appeared to be a legitimate contender to become the biggest winner among meme stocks. The Canadian marijuana stock vaulted more than 520% higher year to date before giving up much of its gains. However, Sundial's share price has still more than doubled in 2021.
\n
Analysts anticipate that the pot stock could fall even further. The consensus price target for Sundial reflects a 23% discount to its current share price. One analyst even thinks the stock could sink 55%.
\n
There certainly are reasons to be pessimistic about Sundial's core cannabis business. The company's net cannabis revenue fell year over year in the first quarter of 2021. Although Sundial is taking steps that it hopes will turn things around, it remains to be seen if those efforts will succeed.
\n
Sundial's business deals could give investors reasons for optimism. After all, the company posted positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in Q1 due to its investments.
\n
However, the cash that Sundial is using to make these investments has come at the cost of increased dilution of its stock. The company can't afford any additional dilution without having to resort to desperate measures to keep its listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Meme Stocks Wall Street Predicts Will Plunge More Than 20%
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Meme Stocks Wall Street Predicts Will Plunge More Than 20%\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-19 09:13 GMT+8 fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Meme stocks have been all the rage so far this year. Here, we talk with Bobby Ong, CoinGecko's chief operating officer, about the move down. CoinGecko is one of the largest independent cryptocurrency data aggregators.
\n
The following interview was conducted over email over last week as bitcoin had already begun its decline.
\n
TheStreet:Despite bitcoin's known volatility, it seems some people were caught off guard by the decline in bitcoin over the past week. Was that just par for the course -- normal volatility -- of something else?
\n
Ong:The recent bloodbath on April 18 saw a record of approximately $9.77 billion worth of futures contracts liquidated in just 24 hours. There was already a massive amount of leverage in the market in anticipation of the Coinbase (COIN) -Get Report initial public offering. The excitement of having the first crypto company IPO also led bitcoin’s price to hit a new all-time high of $64,804.
\n
However, the direct listing of Coinbase also had a lukewarm reception from stock investors. More recently, there was a lot of fear and uncertainty spreading on social media due to various factors, including (rumors of) the U.S. Treasury taking legal action against certain financial institutions for money laundering, which turned out to be false information. Other than that, CNBC was recirculating news about the crypto ban in India, Turkey banning crypto payments, President Biden proposing a higher capital gains tax, and China bitcoin miners losing power.
\n
The selloff happened during the weekend when there were thinner order books. With high leverage and thin order books, even a small decrease in price will trigger a sharp drawdown and cause a downward spiral in price.
\n
Naturally, the market also needs to correct itself, because there were many over-leveraged traders. It is also important to note that bitcoin options expire towards the end of every month, which usually causes increased volatility in the last week of each month.
\n
TheStreet:Do you see the decline as a chance for people to get into it at a cheaper price?
\n
Ong:It depends on that person and their goals. The profiles of buyers today are very different before, when it was mostly libertarians. Today. it’s U.S. institutions, and soon it will be governments.
\n
If the time horizon is more than five years, then there is no need to look at price movements each day. Have a long-term horizon, choose an exposure of your net worth that you are comfortable with, and hold for the long term. We are still in the early innings of bitcoin adoption, and we foresee tremendous growth potential in the years to come.
\n
TheStreet:What did you make of Coinbase's IPO and subsequent move downward?
\n
Ong:Coinbase had a pretty decent performance with regards to direct listing performance in comparison to other companies. It was just the unusually high expectation from the crypto space with regards to its price.
\n
There were also ongoing debates on how Coinbase should be valued, because it operates in a cyclical market and might face increased competition in the future.
\n
TheStreet:It seems you have two parallel views of bitcoin and other crypto that's not tethered to another currency: One, you have people who want to use it as a currency and for privacy. And, two, you have people who are solely looking at it as an investment. How does the latter affect the former? Can it rise to a point where it's only really useful for investment?
\n
Ong:You are raising a good point here, because bitcoin was originally envisioned to be a peer-to-peer currency for everyone. However, since its inception, there have been various debates in regards to bitcoin’s role.
\n
I would say its purpose has now evolved to become a store of value and is becoming a viable alternative to replace gold. In fact, this appears to align with China’s stance, as it recently recognized that crypto assets are also an alternative form of investment. This is significant, because the Chinese government has always shunned crypto assets.
\n
Meanwhile, stablecoins such as USDT and USDC are seeing increased adoption as a form of payment currency.
\n
TheStreet:Is there anything you want to add?
\n
Ong:Bitcoin’s correction is becoming more pronounced even though it is essential for sustained market growth. We are now experiencing 20%-30% drawdowns on an almost monthly basis. Here, we talk with Bobby Ong, CoinGecko's chief operating officer, about the move down. CoinGecko is one of the largest independent cryptocurrency data aggregators.\nThe following interview was conducted over email over last week as bitcoin had already begun its decline.\nTheStreet:Despite bitcoin's known volatility, it seems some people were caught off guard by the decline in bitcoin over the past week. Was that just par for the course -- normal volatility -- of something else?\nOng:The recent bloodbath on April 18 saw a record of approximately $9.77 billion worth of futures contracts liquidated in just 24 hours. There was already a massive amount of leverage in the market in anticipation of the Coinbase (COIN) -Get Report initial public offering. The excitement of having the first crypto company IPO also led bitcoin’s price to hit a new all-time high of $64,804.\nHowever, the direct listing of Coinbase also had a lukewarm reception from stock investors. More recently, there was a lot of fear and uncertainty spreading on social media due to various factors, including (rumors of) the U.S. Treasury taking legal action against certain financial institutions for money laundering, which turned out to be false information. Other than that, CNBC was recirculating news about the crypto ban in India, Turkey banning crypto payments, President Biden proposing a higher capital gains tax, and China bitcoin miners losing power.\nThe selloff happened during the weekend when there were thinner order books. With high leverage and thin order books, even a small decrease in price will trigger a sharp drawdown and cause a downward spiral in price.\nNaturally, the market also needs to correct itself, because there were many over-leveraged traders. It is also important to note that bitcoin options expire towards the end of every month, which usually causes increased volatility in the last week of each month.\nTheStreet:Do you see the decline as a chance for people to get into it at a cheaper price?\nOng:It depends on that person and their goals. The profiles of buyers today are very different before, when it was mostly libertarians. Today. it’s U.S. institutions, and soon it will be governments.\nIf the time horizon is more than five years, then there is no need to look at price movements each day. Have a long-term horizon, choose an exposure of your net worth that you are comfortable with, and hold for the long term. We are still in the early innings of bitcoin adoption, and we foresee tremendous growth potential in the years to come.\nTheStreet:What did you make of Coinbase's IPO and subsequent move downward?\nOng:Coinbase had a pretty decent performance with regards to direct listing performance in comparison to other companies. It was just the unusually high expectation from the crypto space with regards to its price.\nThere were also ongoing debates on how Coinbase should be valued, because it operates in a cyclical market and might face increased competition in the future.\nTheStreet:It seems you have two parallel views of bitcoin and other crypto that's not tethered to another currency: One, you have people who want to use it as a currency and for privacy. And, two, you have people who are solely looking at it as an investment. How does the latter affect the former? Can it rise to a point where it's only really useful for investment?\nOng:You are raising a good point here, because bitcoin was originally envisioned to be a peer-to-peer currency for everyone. However, since its inception, there have been various debates in regards to bitcoin’s role.\nI would say its purpose has now evolved to become a store of value and is becoming a viable alternative to replace gold. In fact, this appears to align with China’s stance, as it recently recognized that crypto assets are also an alternative form of investment. This is significant, because the Chinese government has always shunned crypto assets.\nMeanwhile, stablecoins such as USDT and USDC are seeing increased adoption as a form of payment currency.\nTheStreet:Is there anything you want to add?\nOng:Bitcoin’s correction is becoming more pronounced even though it is essential for sustained market growth. We are now experiencing 20%-30% drawdowns on an almost monthly basis. Although the overall macro trend remains bullish, we see an increase in the number of liquidations by traders who over-leverage themselves.\nIt is important to understand that while leverage opportunities like margin trading or futures offer the potential for more gains, the associated risk is also very high. Be sure that you have time, resources, and lots of knowledge before dabbling in leverages.\nI highly recommend that people set reasonable timeframes and financial goals that work for themselves and ensure that they do plenty of research.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1023,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":371645169,"gmtCreate":1618933841451,"gmtModify":1704717201899,"author":{"id":"3549714415666834","authorId":"3549714415666834","name":"TwL","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/14ad422a3833952a8e4fba42f34de58a","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3549714415666834","idStr":"3549714415666834"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Apple stock should still be going strong during thisperiod. The 90 year’s old billionaire, who held $279 billion in stocks says, \"The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.\"
\n
He adds further that investing is very simple.
\n
“You don’t need to be a rocket scientist. Investing is not a game where the guy with a 160 IQ always beats the guy with a 130 IQ. Rationality is essential. You need a stable personality”
\n
He used a basic value investing strategy to generate a 20.0% average annual return since Berkshire’s inception in 1965, almost double compared to the S&P 500 returns of 10.2%.
\n
Buffett, who is worth nearly $100 billion according to Forbes, Portfolio Insider & Bloomberg, has been using a concentrated portfolio strategy instead of diversification.
\n
The legendary investor held 84.29% of the stake in three sectors and his top ten holdings weighted around 88% of the Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-B) portfolio. These three sectors include information technology, finance, and consumer staples.
\n
What’s more, Buffett’s concentrated portfolio strategy worked even in the most volatile and unpredictable year. His investment holding earned $26.7 billion in net unrealized gains from its existing stock positions during the pandemic year while realized gains came in at $4.5 billion.
\n
“In aggregate, we expect our share of the huge pile of earnings retained by Berkshire’s non-controlled businesses (what others would label our equity portfolio) to eventually deliver us an equal or greater amount of capital gains. Over our 56-year tenure, that expectation has been met,” Buffett said in an investor letter.
\n
Let’s start digging into stocks from three sectors Warren Buffett like the most:
\n
Information Technology: 44.25%
\n
Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) represents 44.25% of Berkshire’s portfolio, valued at around $117 billion.
\n
While Warren Buffett is a value investor and he strictly follows his stock selection criteria, he has now moved his portfolio focus towards growth stocks, thanks to his fund managers Todd Combs and Ted Weschler.
\n
Nevertheless, Apple’s strong business model played a big role in enhancing Buffett’s confidence.
\n
“I don’t think of Apple as a stock. I think of it as our third business,” Buffett said. “It’s probably the best business I know in the world. And that is a bigger commitment than we have in any business except insurance and the railroad,” he added.
\n
Fortunately, the legendary investor’s stock-picking strategy worked in the case of the iPhone maker. Why Some Analysts Are Staying Bullish.","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1172855360","media":"Barrons","summary":"When Netflix reported its fourth-quarter results back in January, the streaming video giant’s stock ","content":"
When Netflix reported its fourth-quarter results back in January, the streaming video giant’s stock spiked higher. The big news was that Netflix expects to operate at cash-flow breakeven or better, and could eventually start buying back stock.
\n
The company also said it shouldn’t ever have to tap the debt markets again to fund content production, putting the kibosh on the bearish argument that Netflix could never generate enough subscription revenue to fund its operations. And on Jan. 20, the day after Netflix (ticker: NFLX) reported fourth-quarter earnings, the stock set an intraday record at $593.29.
\n
But it has been all downhill from there. Netflix saw a clear boost to its business from the pandemic, with most movie theaters, bars, and sporting events shuttered—it was the ultimate stay-at-home stock. Now with vaccination rates rising, investors are hunting for re-opening plays and taking profits on the 2020 winners. And there are concerns that Netflix could see slower growth and higher churn as consumers get off their couches and go outside.
\n
Netflix will report March quarter results on April 20. The company has projected $7.1 billion in revenue, earnings of $2.97 a share, and 6 million net new subscribers. Some investors worry that a combination of a growing array of subscription streaming video services and tough comparisons with 2020 will lead to some difficult quarters in 2021. We should get some new clues next week.
\n
Nonetheless, some analysts are staying bullish on the company.
\n
On Wednesday, Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne repeated his Overweight rating and $700 price target on Netflix shares. He notes that the stock sits about where it was in July 2020, with investors “bracing for the ultimate in tough Covid comps.” But Swinburne remains optimistic. He says three factors should drive up earnings from here: “a long runway for member growth,” pricing power, and a vertically integrated motel with a focus on original content.
\n
Swinburne concedes that there are some risks to subscriber growth in the 2021 firsts half, but he sees net additions increasing in the second half and into 2022. The analyst notes that Netflix has less than 10% of the global subscription video market.
\n
The list of new entrants in the streaming world since late 2019 is long—with new services from Apple(AAPL),Walt Disney(DIS), HBO,Comcast(CMCSA), Discovery, and ViacomCBS(VIAC). Yet in the same period those services were introduced, Netflix reported the strongest net subscriber gains of any period in its history.
\n
Swinburne reports that a key part of his thesis is that the company can become more profitable over time, eventually reaching 40% Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) margins, with gross margins expanding to an eventual 60% from 40% in 2020.
\n
Meanwhile, KeyBanc Capital Markets analystJust in Patterson reiterated his Overweight rating and $650 price target, in a note more focused on the coming quarterly report. Patterson sees multiple catalysts for the stack coming in the second half.
\n
For one thing, he sees important new content on the way, including new seasons of the popular series Stranger Things and Money Heist. The company’s tests on cracking down on password sharing could boost subscriber growth as well, he says. And Patterson is impressed with the company’s continued aggressive stance on paying up for content, including a new licensing deal for Sony feature films and a $450 million investment in sequels to the hit film Knives Out.
\n
On Wednesday, Netflix shares were off 2.5% to $540.02.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Netflix Reports Earnings Next Week. Netflix saw a clear boost to its business from the pandemic, with most movie theaters, bars, and sporting events shuttered—it was the ultimate stay-at-home stock. Now with vaccination rates rising, investors are hunting for re-opening plays and taking profits on the 2020 winners. And there are concerns that Netflix could see slower growth and higher churn as consumers get off their couches and go outside.\nNetflix will report March quarter results on April 20. The company has projected $7.1 billion in revenue, earnings of $2.97 a share, and 6 million net new subscribers. Some investors worry that a combination of a growing array of subscription streaming video services and tough comparisons with 2020 will lead to some difficult quarters in 2021. We should get some new clues next week.\nNonetheless, some analysts are staying bullish on the company.\nOn Wednesday, Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne repeated his Overweight rating and $700 price target on Netflix shares. He notes that the stock sits about where it was in July 2020, with investors “bracing for the ultimate in tough Covid comps.” But Swinburne remains optimistic. He says three factors should drive up earnings from here: “a long runway for member growth,” pricing power, and a vertically integrated motel with a focus on original content.\nSwinburne concedes that there are some risks to subscriber growth in the 2021 firsts half, but he sees net additions increasing in the second half and into 2022. The analyst notes that Netflix has less than 10% of the global subscription video market.\nThe list of new entrants in the streaming world since late 2019 is long—with new services from Apple(AAPL),Walt Disney(DIS), HBO,Comcast(CMCSA), Discovery, and ViacomCBS(VIAC). Yet in the same period those services were introduced, Netflix reported the strongest net subscriber gains of any period in its history.\nSwinburne reports that a key part of his thesis is that the company can become more profitable over time, eventually reaching 40% Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) margins, with gross margins expanding to an eventual 60% from 40% in 2020.\nMeanwhile, KeyBanc Capital Markets analystJust in Patterson reiterated his Overweight rating and $650 price target, in a note more focused on the coming quarterly report. Patterson sees multiple catalysts for the stack coming in the second half.\nFor one thing, he sees important new content on the way, including new seasons of the popular series Stranger Things and Money Heist. The company’s tests on cracking down on password sharing could boost subscriber growth as well, he says. And Patterson is impressed with the company’s continued aggressive stance on paying up for content, including a new licensing deal for Sony feature films and a $450 million investment in sequels to the hit film Knives Out.\nOn Wednesday, Netflix shares were off 2.5% to $540.02.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"NFLX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1316,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":344167060,"gmtCreate":1618388889550,"gmtModify":1704710035696,"author":{"id":"3549714415666834","authorId":"3549714415666834","name":"TwL","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/14ad422a3833952a8e4fba42f34de58a","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3549714415666834","idStr":"3549714415666834"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Is it safe to invest in crypto?","listText":"Is it safe to invest in crypto?","text":"Is it safe to invest in crypto?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/344167060","repostId":"2127454000","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":997,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":342678913,"gmtCreate":1618215907432,"gmtModify":1704707611116,"author":{"id":"3549714415666834","authorId":"3549714415666834","name":"TwL","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/14ad422a3833952a8e4fba42f34de58a","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3549714415666834","idStr":"3549714415666834"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Will this affect the stock price? But it looks like Chewy co-founder Ryan Cohen is really running the show.

GameStop(GME)said Thursday that it planned to nominate Cohen, whose investment firm RC Ventures owns a nearly 13% stake in the company, to be its next chairman following GameStop's annual meeting on June 9.

The company also said Thursday that following the annual meeting, all board directors will be compensated entirely in stock -- which presumably will motivate them to take action to boost the price further. Board members will also have their compensation reduced by nearly 30% from a year earlier.

Shares of GameStop were down 5% in late afternoon trading following the news.

The stock has beenincredibly volatilethis year thanks to a push fromfans on social media site Reddit, who have been betting on a turnaround and battling short sellers that are betting the stock will go down.

GameStop shares are up 800% in 2021 -- but are currently trading 65% below their peak price from late January.

Bulls hope that Cohen, who helped build online pet supplies store Chewy (CHWY) into a digital commerce juggernaut, will be able to work his e-commerce magic with GameStop too.

GameStop named Cohen as the head of a strategic planning and capital allocation committee in early March. As part of that role, Cohen was expected to strengthen GameStop's online commerce operations.

The company has already taken several steps to do that, hiring several executives from Chewy and Amazon (AMZN) to help lead the company's transformation.

GameStop, like many retailers, has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. But it looks like Chewy co-founder Ryan Cohen is really running the show.GameStop(GME)said Thursday that it planned to nominate Cohen, whose investment firm RC Ventures owns a nearly 13% stake in the company, to be its next chairman following GameStop's annual meeting on June 9.The company also said Thursday that following the annual meeting, all board directors will be compensated entirely in stock -- which presumably will motivate them to take action to boost the price further. Board members will also have their compensation reduced by nearly 30% from a year earlier.Shares of GameStop were down 5% in late afternoon trading following the news. The stock has beenincredibly volatilethis year thanks to a push fromfans on social media site Reddit, who have been betting on a turnaround and battling short sellers that are betting the stock will go down.GameStop shares are up 800% in 2021 -- but are currently trading 65% below their peak price from late January.Bulls hope that Cohen, who helped build online pet supplies store Chewy (CHWY) into a digital commerce juggernaut, will be able to work his e-commerce magic with GameStop too.GameStop named Cohen as the head of a strategic planning and capital allocation committee in early March. As part of that role, Cohen was expected to strengthen GameStop's online commerce operations. The company has already taken several steps to do that, hiring several executives from Chewy and Amazon (AMZN) to help lead the company's transformation.GameStop, like many retailers, has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
