Images</span></p>\n<p>Shares of Chinese electric vehicle maker NIO (NIO) have dropped considerably this week as Beijing's crackdown on different business sectors escalated. However, the Chinese market for electric vehicles has the full policy support of Beijing and local governments. The risk profile appears to be heavily skewed to the upside, and I am going to explain why.</p>\n<p><b>China's crackdown</b></p>\n<p>It all started with the crackdown on cryptocurrencies a few months ago when Chinese regulators forbade financial institutions to offer crypto-related services to its customers. Since then, the crackdown has widened and Beijing is using its anti-monopoly agency, the State Administration for Market Regulation, to rein in monopolistic enterprises. Tencent (OTCPK:TCEHY), China's Facebook (FB), was just forced by the SAMR to&nbsp;give up its exclusive music copyrights&nbsp;within 30 days. Ride-hailing firm DiDi(NYSE:DIDI), China's Uber Technologies (UBER), saw its app&nbsp;pulled from app stores&nbsp;earlier this month - which is likely related to&nbsp;its overseas stock listing- and Alibaba, China's Amazon (AMZN), was hit with a&nbsp;$2.8B fine for abusing its market dominance&nbsp;in E-commerce a few months ago. The crackdown widened this week after Chinese regulators banned&nbsp;paid tutoring in the education sector&nbsp;and forbade raising capital abroad. Beijing's government actions roiled the Chinese stock market, including shares of firms like NIO that are not directly affected by the crackdown.</p>\n<p><b>The Chinese EV market is growing extremely fast and has no monopolistic structure</b></p>\n<p>The Chinese market for electric vehicles looks very different than the market for search, social media or E-commerce where a few very large corporations control nearly the entire market. NIO, XPeng (XPEV) and Li Auto (LI) are all relative small Chinese makers of electric vehicles that are unlikely to attract any kind of antitrust action. While BYD (OTCPK:BYDDF) is one of the larger EV companies in China regarding size and revenues, NIO and its two closest rivals, XPeng and Li Auto, are relatively small.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a19dc7f865853a65956c1b0eab25f2c7\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"582\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>NIO, XPeng and Li Auto are selling just a few thousand vehicles a month each. NIO sold 8,083 vehicles in June 2021, showing growth of 116% Y/Y, but NIO and its EV rivals are not anywhere near dominating the market for electric vehicles. China sold 1.3M electric vehicles in 2020, representing 41% of all EV sales globally. China is by far the largest market for electric vehicles and it has the largest EV stock. Sales for battery-powered and hybrid passenger cars soared to almost 5M in 2020 in an industry that is seeing momentum and accelerating delivery growth of EVs.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/773b6ddd478dbeeff322569bb93ac92f\" tg-width=\"718\" tg-height=\"386\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>(Source: The International Council On Clean Transportation)</span></p>\n<p>In 2021, China could see 1.9M EV sales, indicating near-50% Y/Y growth. NIO will deliver just short of 100,000 EVs in 2021 - based on&nbsp;my delivery projections for FY 2021- which would give NIO a market share for new EV sales of less than 5 percent. About 10% of new car sales in China are EVs, a percentage that according to BYD founder Wang Chuanfu could&nbsp;rise to 70% within the decade. This estimate, however, may even be on the low end as EV deliveries really started to skyrocket in FY 2021. Plug-in sales are surging in China and the market is seeing accelerating uptake as all Chinese EV makers add new models to their EV line-ups.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0cce9674e002abb9c5e70eef33e97b68\" tg-width=\"913\" tg-height=\"442\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>(Source: InsideEVs)</span></p>\n<p><b>Government is actively supporting Chinese EV makers</b></p>\n<p>There is another major difference between the market NIO operates in and the markets Beijing is cracking down on to correct monopolistic behavior. As opposed to the tech sector, for example, the Chinese government actively initiated policies that support the industry. Accelerating EV adoption is an explicit policy goal that Beijing and Chinese municipalities pursue through various means, and these goals tie in with the government's plan to be carbon-neutral by 2060. Because of this, Beijing wants to see 20% of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2025 which explains why the adoption of zero-emission vehicles is heavily supported by local governments. Municipalities and big Chinese cities set incentives for EV adoption by offering purchase subsidies as well as other perks.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/50881259b29247848accd997405610c4\" tg-width=\"1004\" tg-height=\"616\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>(Source: IEA Global Energy Outlook)</span></p>\n<p>Since Beijing is heavily supporting Chinese EV makers and the market is non-monopolistic, the risk of seeing government intervention in this sector of the economy is really, really low.</p>\n<p><b>Overreaction creates an opportunity to engage</b></p>\n<p>After NIO's 30% drop since June, every dollar put into NIO buys more growth. All Chinese EV makers dropped hard since June and the sell-off affected NIO as well as its rivals. Shares of NIO dropped 9% on Tuesday and the EV maker now has the lowest year-to-date return of its rivals.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dcf95f86d85e0fe227eb608c0e80e558\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"450\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Due to the market's overreaction to Beijing's antitrust actions that are limited to markets with monopolistic structures, NIO's sales growth is now also 30% cheaper. NIO could see at least 100% delivery growth in FY 2021 and the&nbsp;BaaS revenue opportunity&nbsp;is the key differentiating factor that sets NIO apart from the competition.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fb4101fdf02c82855a6db3912c525d5b\" tg-width=\"907\" tg-height=\"411\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>(Source: Author)</span></p>\n<p><b>Risks with NIO</b></p>\n<p>Government intervention is generally a risk in the second-biggest economy, but I don't believe it is a big risk for NIO. The biggest risk for NIO, by far, is slowing revenue and delivery growth rates which could spark a revaluation of the EV maker and result in a lower sales multiplier factor. A more serious risk for NIO and other car brands, short term, is the semiconductor shortage that is lowering factory output. NIO&nbsp;lowered its production guidance&nbsp;earlier this year and guided for a rebound in the second half of the year. If the chip supply shortage lasts longer than expected and starts to take a bite out of NIO's delivery growth in 2021, NIO's stock could face more pressure and skew the risk profile to the downside. A widening regulatory crackdown in China that involves, for whatever reason, small EV makers (possible, but not probable) would mean that a fundamental revaluation of NIO is needed.</p>\n<p><b>Final thoughts</b></p>\n<p>This is a buy-the-dip opportunity because the market appears to be overreacting to China's antitrust actions. Tencent's market is very different than NIO's market (Tencent has a monopoly) and NIO's electric vehicle business has the explicit support of Beijing. Policy goals to accelerate EV adoption tie in with Beijing's climate change goals and favor NIO's growth. However, the Chinese market for electric vehicles has the full policy support of Beijing and local governments. The risk profile appears to be heavily skewed to the upside, and I am going to explain why.\nChina's crackdown\nIt all started with the crackdown on cryptocurrencies a few months ago when Chinese regulators forbade financial institutions to offer crypto-related services to its customers. Since then, the crackdown has widened and Beijing is using its anti-monopoly agency, the State Administration for Market Regulation, to rein in monopolistic enterprises. Tencent (OTCPK:TCEHY), China's Facebook (FB), was just forced by the SAMR to give up its exclusive music copyrights within 30 days. Ride-hailing firm DiDi(NYSE:DIDI), China's Uber Technologies (UBER), saw its app pulled from app stores earlier this month - which is likely related to its overseas stock listing- and Alibaba, China's Amazon (AMZN), was hit with a $2.8B fine for abusing its market dominance in E-commerce a few months ago. The crackdown widened this week after Chinese regulators banned paid tutoring in the education sector and forbade raising capital abroad. Beijing's government actions roiled the Chinese stock market, including shares of firms like NIO that are not directly affected by the crackdown.\nThe Chinese EV market is growing extremely fast and has no monopolistic structure\nThe Chinese market for electric vehicles looks very different than the market for search, social media or E-commerce where a few very large corporations control nearly the entire market. NIO, XPeng (XPEV) and Li Auto (LI) are all relative small Chinese makers of electric vehicles that are unlikely to attract any kind of antitrust action. While BYD (OTCPK:BYDDF) is one of the larger EV companies in China regarding size and revenues, NIO and its two closest rivals, XPeng and Li Auto, are relatively small.\nData by YCharts\nNIO, XPeng and Li Auto are selling just a few thousand vehicles a month each. NIO sold 8,083 vehicles in June 2021, showing growth of 116% Y/Y, but NIO and its EV rivals are not anywhere near dominating the market for electric vehicles. China sold 1.3M electric vehicles in 2020, representing 41% of all EV sales globally. China is by far the largest market for electric vehicles and it has the largest EV stock. Sales for battery-powered and hybrid passenger cars soared to almost 5M in 2020 in an industry that is seeing momentum and accelerating delivery growth of EVs.\n(Source: The International Council On Clean Transportation)\nIn 2021, China could see 1.9M EV sales, indicating near-50% Y/Y growth. NIO will deliver just short of 100,000 EVs in 2021 - based on my delivery projections for FY 2021- which would give NIO a market share for new EV sales of less than 5 percent. About 10% of new car sales in China are EVs, a percentage that according to BYD founder Wang Chuanfu could rise to 70% within the decade. This estimate, however, may even be on the low end as EV deliveries really started to skyrocket in FY 2021. Plug-in sales are surging in China and the market is seeing accelerating uptake as all Chinese EV makers add new models to their EV line-ups.\n(Source: InsideEVs)\nGovernment is actively supporting Chinese EV makers\nThere is another major difference between the market NIO operates in and the markets Beijing is cracking down on to correct monopolistic behavior. As opposed to the tech sector, for example, the Chinese government actively initiated policies that support the industry. Accelerating EV adoption is an explicit policy goal that Beijing and Chinese municipalities pursue through various means, and these goals tie in with the government's plan to be carbon-neutral by 2060. Because of this, Beijing wants to see 20% of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2025 which explains why the adoption of zero-emission vehicles is heavily supported by local governments. Municipalities and big Chinese cities set incentives for EV adoption by offering purchase subsidies as well as other perks.\n(Source: IEA Global Energy Outlook)\nSince Beijing is heavily supporting Chinese EV makers and the market is non-monopolistic, the risk of seeing government intervention in this sector of the economy is really, really low.\nOverreaction creates an opportunity to engage\nAfter NIO's 30% drop since June, every dollar put into NIO buys more growth. All Chinese EV makers dropped hard since June and the sell-off affected NIO as well as its rivals. Shares of NIO dropped 9% on Tuesday and the EV maker now has the lowest year-to-date return of its rivals.\nData by YCharts\nDue to the market's overreaction to Beijing's antitrust actions that are limited to markets with monopolistic structures, NIO's sales growth is now also 30% cheaper. NIO could see at least 100% delivery growth in FY 2021 and the BaaS revenue opportunity is the key differentiating factor that sets NIO apart from the competition.\n(Source: Author)\nRisks with NIO\nGovernment intervention is generally a risk in the second-biggest economy, but I don't believe it is a big risk for NIO. The biggest risk for NIO, by far, is slowing revenue and delivery growth rates which could spark a revaluation of the EV maker and result in a lower sales multiplier factor. A more serious risk for NIO and other car brands, short term, is the semiconductor shortage that is lowering factory output. NIO lowered its production guidance earlier this year and guided for a rebound in the second half of the year. If the chip supply shortage lasts longer than expected and starts to take a bite out of NIO's delivery growth in 2021, NIO's stock could face more pressure and skew the risk profile to the downside. A widening regulatory crackdown in China that involves, for whatever reason, small EV makers (possible, but not probable) would mean that a fundamental revaluation of NIO is needed.\nFinal thoughts\nThis is a buy-the-dip opportunity because the market appears to be overreacting to China's antitrust actions. Tencent's market is very different than NIO's market (Tencent has a monopoly) and NIO's electric vehicle business has the explicit support of Beijing. Policy goals to accelerate EV adoption tie in with Beijing's climate change goals and favor NIO's growth. NIO is also investing in battery technology and has&nbsp;formed its own joint venture&nbsp;to secure battery supply.</p>\n<p>The difference to Ford is that NIO’s battery investment strategy revolves around a battery subscription model, also called “battery-as-a-service”, which creates a strong, long term revenue opportunity for the Chinese vehicle maker. Under this “BaaS” model, users who buy a NIO electric vehicle get a 70,000 RMB initial discount, equivalent to $10,800, and can sign up for a monthly subscription to rent a rechargeable 70 kWh battery. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.</p>\n<p>The BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. Revenues from “BaaS” subscriptions could be used to increase the density of NIO’s network of charging/replacement stations. Government policy favors EV-makers like NIO. The potential for total global sales growth is larger for NIO as it operates from a smaller revenue base compared to Ford. But there are also a few things that work against NIO. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.</p>\n<p><b>Final verdict</b></p>\n<p>NIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Strong adoption and sales growth in China and Europe support NIO. Its super smart BaaS model which decouples vehicle purchase prices from battery costs is genius. You pay a high price for this growth but the market opportunity for NIO is immense.</p>\n<p>Ford’s EV sales are booming and the percentage of EV sales will increase as the vehicle maker electrifies its fleet. He believes Tesla's energy generation and storage business could rake in $8 billion of revenue annually by 2025 thanks to an \"<b>Apple</b>-esque ecosystem of energy products\" and \"harmonized electrification.\" Dorsheimer thinks that as Tesla resolves the battery cell supply shortage it said it was facing in its most recent quarterly update, the company is well positioned to grow the business through sales of its energy storage products. He also believes Tesla is several years ahead of the competition in energy storage, giving it an edge.</p><p><b>Momentum in energy</b></p><p>Though Tesla's electric-car business gets more attention than its energy storage business since that's where the bulk of the company's sales come from, energy storage deployments actually grew faster in 2020 than electric-car sales. It's constantly being updated by a network of computers around the world.\nSo-called miners run purpose-built computers to solve complex math puzzles in order to make a transaction go through. This is the only way to mint new bitcoins.\nMiners do not run this operation for free. They have to shell out huge sums on specialized equipment. It's exactly the kind of situation AMD found itself in a few years ago.</p><h2>AMD's comeback looked impossible, too</h2><p>Let's rewind to 2015. AMD was in awful shape. Revenue plunged 28% that year to just $4 billion, and the company reported a staggering net loss of $660 million&nbsp;. To say that AMD's products weren't competitive with Intel's would be an understatement.</p><p>AMD's share of the server chip market had fallen close to zero just as demand from cloud computing providers was starting to heat up. By 2017, AMD was shipping less than 10% of PC chips. The company's Bulldozer architecture, launched in 2011 and revised a few times, was a disaster. Reviewers at Anandtech found <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of AMD's early Bulldozer PC chips was outperformed by a comparable Intel chip by as much as 50%.</p><p>A comeback for AMD looked like the longest of longshots. I was dead wrong about AMD's turnaround for exactly that reason. Shares of AMD have gained more than 2,000% over the past five years, by the way.</p><p>Intel stock hasn't suffered all that much, so don't expect those kinds of gains if the company can turn itself around. A breakout year for Coinbase</h2>\n<p>The ongoing boom in cryptocurrency has attracted the attention of novice and experienced investors alike. Coinbase Global is the leading cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S., allowing enthusiasts to buy and sell a wide range of popular digital currencies. The company makes the majority of its revenue from the transaction fees it charges for each sale.</p>\n<p>The platform has more than 56 million individual users, 7,000 institutions, and 115,000 partners in over 100 countries. Its growing user base gives the company an unmatched ecosystem that has something for everyone, from the beginning cryptocurrency enthusiast to the more experienced buyer.</p>\n<p>2020 was a breakout year for Coinbase, so it isn't surprising that it caught Wood's attention. Coinbase reported that revenue grew 139% year over year to $1.14 billion. At the same time, profits turned positive with net income of $322 million, pivoting from a loss of $30 million in 2019. As a result, the company's adjusted EBITDA surged more than 2,000% to $527 million.</p>\n<p>Preliminary results show that growth accelerated during the first quarter of this year. Revenue surged to $1.8 billion, a ninefold increase from $191 million in the prior-year quarter. For context, revenue tripled compared to the fourth quarter, while exceeding Coinbase's revenue for all of last year. She was particularly intrigued by the potential for blockchain, the digital ledger technology that underpins cryptocurrency. Wood has even gone so far as to say that Bitcoin's price could eventually top $500,000 -- nine times its current price, which is around $55,000 at this writing.</p>\n<p>A quick look at ARK's funds shows that Wood continues to bet big on the potential for cryptocurrency and blockchain. ARK Next Generation Internet holds more than 5% of its $6.9 billion in funds under management in <b>Grayscale Bitcoin Trust</b>&nbsp;-- the first publicly traded security investing solely in Bitcoin.</p>\n<p>That's not all. <b>Square</b> is the No. 1, 2, or 3 holding of three ARK funds and was among the first to offer users more widespread cryptocurrency accessibility. The point-of-sale and digital payments provider first tested buying and selling Bitcoin on its platform in late 2017,&nbsp;before expanding access to all users in early 2018.&nbsp;Rival <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PYPL\">PayPal</a> Holdings</b>&nbsp;also debuted a service late last year that enables users to buy, hold, and sell cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency is still in its infancy</h2>\n<p>While it may seem like cryptocurrency is finally entering the mainstream, it's actually still early days for the digital payment method. Hester Peirce, a commissioner with the Securities and Exchange Commission, says cryptocurrency is still in its infancy, but interest is growing.</p>\n<p>\"We're seeing more interest coming from institutional quarters than we have in the past,\" Peirce said during a live-stream financial conference. \"As people are more comfortable working in a virtual world in every industry now, I think people are likely to turn more interest to the crypto space. And as people are looking to diversify their portfolios, I think people are also likely to look more to the crypto space.\"</p>\n<p>A recent study of 30,000 Americans found that roughly 57% say they understand cryptocurrency, about 14% say they are currently invested in crypto and another 15% are planning to invest, according to a nationwide poll conducted by Piplsay Research.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, 43% of respondents said they either didn't understand or hadn't even heard of cryptocurrencies. This shows that cryptocurrency has a long way to go before it reaches maturity, with plenty of growth potential.</p>\n<h2>A bit of context</h2>\n<p>It's important to put Wood's purchase of Coinbase Global into context. If that’s the case, its stock could be a bargain.</p><p>Barron’s Avi Salzman made the case for owning Coinbase stock in the April 19 issue of the magazine, arguing that it’s “a novel company with competitive advantages that have enabled it to increase market share despite fierce rivals.” The article also compared Coinbase to Shopify (SHOP), Square (SQ), Charles Schwab (SCHW), and Nasdaq (NDAQ).</p><p>But Coinbase also looks a lot like Alphabet (GOOGL) didat the time of its IPO. Google, as the company was known then, was worth roughly $23 billion when it made its public debut. That was 2004, when the S&amp;P 500 was around 1,100. Today, Coinbase is worth about $87 billion—based on the roughly 260 million fully diluted shares count—and the S&amp;P 500 is at almost 4,200.</p><p>Back then, Google’s valuation raised some eyebrows. But Google was also generating earnings and free cash flow. Fast forward to today and Alphabet has generated about $240 billion in free cash flow over the course of its existence. That has made investors, who bought shares at $85 in its IPO very happy.</p><p>Coinbase, like Google, is already making money—a lot of money. The company generated about $320 million in cash from operations during 2020 from $1.2 billion in sales. In the first quarter of 2021, Coinbase revenue came in at $1.8 billion. Earnings were roughly $750 million. Coinbase’s net margin in the first quarter works out to roughly 42%. That’s high, but not all that high for an exchange. The average net profit margin for the big four publicly traded exchanges is about 35%.</p><p>Yes, Coinbase is already one of the world’s most valuable exchanges. The Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) has a market value—including debt—of roughly $84 billion.CME Group (CME), Nasdaq, and Cboe Global Markets (CBOE) are valued at $76 billion, $29 billion, and $12 billion, respectively.</p><p>The pace of value creation is breathtaking and will bring claims of “bubble” with it. The Intercontinental Exchange, after all, owns the 200-year-old New York Stock Exchange. Coinbase was founded in 2012 to trade Bitcoin, which was introduced in 2008. And despite its lack of pedigree, Coinbase doesn’t look all that expensive compared with the four traditional exchanges. It trades at 15 times enterprise value to sales, compared with an average of 11 times enterprise value to sales for the traditional exchanges. What’s more, the exchange stocks traded at 15 to 18 times EV to sales when they were faster-growing companies.</p><p>At 15 times annualized first-quarter sales, Coinbase would be worth $108 billion, or roughly $415 a share, 21% higher than Friday’s close of $342.</p><p>The trade is not without risk. Coinbase is inextricably linked to the success of Bitcoin. When it rises, trading volume does too. When it falls, so will trading activity. Another risk is competition. More exchanges will pop up, attempting to stake out ground in the new crypto land rush. But, like the search business before it, crypto might end up supporting very few players, and Coinbase could turn out to be Bing and not Google.</p><p>Fee compression, too, could be a problem. Coinbase can charge around 4%, in a day when stocks can be bought and sold for free. Fees will likely fall, which will pressure sales growth. But Coinbase is diversifying away from just transaction fees, notes MKM Partners analyst Rohit Kulkarni, just like Google became more than search. Kulkarni points out that more than 20% of retail users also “engage in at least one non-investing product,” writes Kulkarni. What’s more, he points out that Coinbase could, eventually, offer its own cryptocurrency, like Binance—another exchange that issued a crypto token.</p><p>Ultimately, though, there is one question potential Coinbase investors need to ask themselves: Do they believe cryptocurrencies have staying power? Google, as the company was known then, was worth roughly $23 billion when it made its public debut. That was 2004, when the S&P 500 was around 1,100. Today, Coinbase is worth about $87 billion—based on the roughly 260 million fully diluted shares count—and the S&P 500 is at almost 4,200.Back then, Google’s valuation raised some eyebrows. But Google was also generating earnings and free cash flow. Fast forward to today and Alphabet has generated about $240 billion in free cash flow over the course of its existence. That has made investors, who bought shares at $85 in its IPO very happy.Coinbase, like Google, is already making money—a lot of money. The company generated about $320 million in cash from operations during 2020 from $1.2 billion in sales. In the first quarter of 2021, Coinbase revenue came in at $1.8 billion. Earnings were roughly $750 million. Coinbase’s net margin in the first quarter works out to roughly 42%. That’s high, but not all that high for an exchange. The average net profit margin for the big four publicly traded exchanges is about 35%.Yes, Coinbase is already one of the world’s most valuable exchanges. The Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) has a market value—including debt—of roughly $84 billion.CME Group (CME), Nasdaq, and Cboe Global Markets (CBOE) are valued at $76 billion, $29 billion, and $12 billion, respectively.The pace of value creation is breathtaking and will bring claims of “bubble” with it. The Intercontinental Exchange, after all, owns the 200-year-old New York Stock Exchange. Coinbase was founded in 2012 to trade Bitcoin, which was introduced in 2008. And despite its lack of pedigree, Coinbase doesn’t look all that expensive compared with the four traditional exchanges. It trades at 15 times enterprise value to sales, compared with an average of 11 times enterprise value to sales for the traditional exchanges. What’s more, the exchange stocks traded at 15 to 18 times EV to sales when they were faster-growing companies.At 15 times annualized first-quarter sales, Coinbase would be worth $108 billion, or roughly $415 a share, 21% higher than Friday’s close of $342.The trade is not without risk. Coinbase is inextricably linked to the success of Bitcoin. When it rises, trading volume does too. When it falls, so will trading activity. Another risk is competition. More exchanges will pop up, attempting to stake out ground in the new crypto land rush. But, like the search business before it, crypto might end up supporting very few players, and Coinbase could turn out to be Bing and not Google.Fee compression, too, could be a problem. Coinbase can charge around 4%, in a day when stocks can be bought and sold for free. Fees will likely fall, which will pressure sales growth. But Coinbase is diversifying away from just transaction fees, notes MKM Partners analyst Rohit Kulkarni, just like Google became more than search. Kulkarni points out that more than 20% of retail users also “engage in at least one non-investing product,” writes Kulkarni. What’s more, he points out that Coinbase could, eventually, offer its own cryptocurrency, like Binance—another exchange that issued a crypto token.Ultimately, though, there is one question potential Coinbase investors need to ask themselves: Do they believe cryptocurrencies have staying power? This is the only way to mint new bitcoins.\nMiners do not run this operation for free. They have to shell out huge sums on specialized equipment.
