Expect a blowout.
\n
For the June quarter, the tech giant has projected sales of $110 billion to $116 billion, with operating income in the $4.5 billion-to-$8 billion range. Wall Street consensus calls for sales of $115.4 billion, operating income of $7.8 billion, and earnings of $12.28 a share.
\n
There are several reasons why the Street numbers might be too low.
\n
For one, Amazon (ticker: AMZN) has beat expectations in every quarter since the start of the pandemic—in fact, for 10 quarters in a row.
\n
Another is that Amazon’s competitors have already reported solid numbers.Shopify(SHOP), arguably one of the company’s most important rivals in e-commerce,posted better-than-expected results for the June quarter, noting that sustained digital commerce trends and U.S. stimulus checks in March and April drove revenues above expectations. Strong reports from Alphabet,Snap and Twitter suggest Amazon will post accelerating growth in its underappreciated advertising business. And the strength in the cloud business at Microsoft bodes well for Amazon Web Services.
\n
Street estimates call for Amazon to post $57.3 billion in online sales, up 25%; $24.8 billion in third-party sellers services, up 36%; $14.3 billion from AWS, up 32%; $7.9 billion in subscription services, up 36%; $7 billion in “other” revenue, which is mostly advertising, up 66%; and $3.9 billion in physical stores revenue, up 3%.
\n
Plus, there are a couple of other factors at play. This will be the first quarter for Amazon since Jeff Bezos turned over the CEO reins to Andy Jassy. Bezos didn’t typically participate in the company’s quarterly earnings calls with analysts, leaving that job to CFO Brian OIsavky; it remains to be seen if Jassy will make an appearance this year. Also, Amazon finds itself at the heart of the debate—in Washington and elsewhere—over the power of tech companies, and now faces an in-depth investigation by the Federal Trade Commission over its proposed acquisition of the film studio MGM.Amazon has requested that FTC Chair Lina Khan recuse herself from any matters involving Amazon given her past criticisms of the company.
\n

\n
Investors also will be watching for clues on how the company expects the pandemic and a return to a more normal economy will impact results for the rest of the year. Street estimates for the September quarter call for revenue of $118.6 billion and profits of $12.97 a share.
\n
In a research note, MKM Partners analyst Rohit Kulkarni points out that Amazon has underperformed both Alphabet and Facebook shares this year. He thinks the stock has been weighed down by ongoing debate about the true strength of this year’s Prime Day sales event, as well as ongoing questions about the outlook for e-commerce as supplemental U.S. unemployment benefits lapse in September. Nonetheless, Kulkarni thinks that advertising, Amazon Prime subscriptions, and AWS will together drive upside to both second-quarter results and guidance, and he continues to consider Amazon his best pick among the big internet stocks. Kulkarni keeps his Buy rating and $4,075 target price.
\n
Evercore ISI analyst Mark Mahaney maintains an Outperform rating and $4,500 target price. He thinks Street estimates for the second quarter “look largely reasonable,” although he has some concerns that the Street might be too bullish on the third quarter, in particular given Prime Day this year shifted into the second quarter.
\n
Monness Crespi White analyst Brian White notes that Amazon shares have been “range bound” over the past few months, but he thinks the company is “uniquely positioned” to exit the pandemic as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the digital transformation trend. White asserts that “the company’s growth path is very attractive across the e-commerce segment, AWS, digital media, advertising, Alexa and more.” White maintains his Buy rating and $4,500 target price.
\n
On Wednesday, Amazon shares were up 0.1%, to $3,630.32.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Amazon Reports Earnings Thursday. He thinks Street estimates for the second quarter “look largely reasonable,” although he has some concerns that the Street might be too bullish on the third quarter, in particular given Prime Day this year shifted into the second quarter.\nMonness Crespi White analyst Brian White notes that Amazon shares have been “range bound” over the past few months, but he thinks the company is “uniquely positioned” to exit the pandemic as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the digital transformation trend. White asserts that “the company’s growth path is very attractive across the e-commerce segment, AWS, digital media, advertising, Alexa and more.” White maintains his Buy rating and $4,500 target price.\nOn Wednesday, Amazon shares were up 0.1%, to $3,630.32.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":126,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9025153386,"gmtCreate":1653644217245,"gmtModify":1676535320214,"author":{"id":"3554935180693279","authorId":"3554935180693279","name":"chefbean","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/75bcdd1d22221ef3b8f10c64b73ea420","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3554935180693279","authorIdStr":"3554935180693279"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$Lollll","listText":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$Lollll","text":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$Lollll","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/115be223380763679c54ccbd52a95c85","width":"1170","height":"2292"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":1,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9025153386","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":459,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":833154647,"gmtCreate":1629212007889,"gmtModify":1676529968767,"author":{"id":"3554935180693279","authorId":"3554935180693279","name":"chefbean","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/75bcdd1d22221ef3b8f10c64b73ea420","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3554935180693279","authorIdStr":"3554935180693279"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Haa","listText":"Haa","text":"Haa","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":10,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/833154647","repostId":"1115558959","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1115558959","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1629192455,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1115558959?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-08-17 17:27","market":"us","language":"en","title":"This Is What Hedge Funds Bought And Sold In Q2: Complete 13F Summary","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1115558959","media":"zerohedge","summary":"For once, the \"smart money\" was not caught off guard by the resurgent covid pandemic, and as a barra","content":"
For once, the \"smart money\" was not caught off guard by the resurgent covid pandemic, and as a barrage of 13F filings published today showed, during the second quarter hedge funds loaded up on companies that would benefit from a new wave of the pandemic even before the delta variant began to rapidly spread throughout the U.S.
\n
As Bloomberg summarizes, Chase Coleman’s Tiger Global Management and Philippe Laffont’s Coatue Management both increased their stakes in food delivery service DoorDash in the second quarter. Coatue also added to its bet on vaccine maker Moderna, while Stephen Mandel’s Lone Pine Capital took a new stake in the biotech company worth more than $900 million. These purchases were a reversal from the first quarter, when many hedge funds cut positions inWork From Homecompanies like Peloton and Zoom as vaccinations began to ramp up in the U.S. That, in turn, fueled wagers on companies that had been hardest-hit by travel restrictions and remote work.
\n
Tiger and Coatue also increased their stakes in Zoom in the three months through June, their 13F filings revealed. The two funds, along with D1 Capital Partners, were among those that added to positions in Peloton, while Viking Global Investors made a new bet on the exercise equipment company.
\n
13F filings also showed that funds including Soros Fund Management and Temasek snapped up shares of fintech companies. Marqeta was a top new buy for Soros, while Temasek disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global. Marqeta and SoFi tumbled last week after reporting disappointing second-quarter results. Temasek also snapped up shares in two new BlackRock carbon transition ETFs (LCTU and LCTD), while Soros took a new position in electric-vehicle producer Proterra, as clean energy continues to be a prominent trend among investors.
\n
Coatue, Viking and Gabe Plotkin’s Melvin Capital Management also added new positions in Beijing-based JD.com Inc. in the quarter, a move that would prove to be rather unfortunate as shares of the giant online vendor have slumped 16% since June 30. Chinese shares have tumbled since June as Beijing banned for-profit tutoring companies and ordered more than two dozen tech firms to carry out internal inspections and address issues such as data security.
\n
Some, such as Soros were either lucky or good in cutting their exposure to Chinese ADRs in the second quarter, ahead of the furious selloff. Soros Fund Management exited many of its investments in Chinese ADRs including Baidu, Vipshop Holdings, Tencent Music Entertainment Group and IQiyi, positions it snapped up during the collapse of Archegos Capital Management in March and April, as noted previously.
\n
Other funds also dumped China-based companies with listings in the U.S. D1 Capital sold its 25-million-share stake in New Oriental Education & Technology Group, while Soroban Capital Partners exited its 2.06-million-share stake in Alibaba. Soroban’s largest new positions favored tech, with the top three additions being Facebook, Twitter and Netflix.
\n
Some other notable 13F findings:
\n
\n
Michael Burry, of “The Big Short” fame, owned puts on Cathie Wood’s ARK Innovation ETF and increased its Tesla puts (more here).
\n
Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway added to just three positions in the quarter and trimmed its holdings in several companies, including a full exit of controversial Alzheimer’s drug developer Biogen. As firstnoted earlier, Berkshire’s only new position in the quarter, 1.55 million shares of Organon was the result of a spinoff of the women’s health pharmaceutical company from Berkshire holding Merck. Its most significant addition was a 21% increase in its position in grocer Kroger. Besides Biogen, exits included Liberty Global’s Class A shares and Axalta Coating Systems, while Berkshire trimmed positions in Marsh & McLennan, Abbvie, General Motors and Bristol-Myers Squibb.
\n
Seth Klarman’s long-standing investment in Rupert Murdoch’s media empire finally came to an end during the second quarter. Baupost Group sold its entire Fox Corp. stake, including 7.6 million Class A shares and 5.7 million Class B shares with a combined market value of $446 million at the end of March.
\n
Carl Icahn, who runs a concentrated portfolio with just 17 reportable investments, sold all of his 9.59 million shares of Tenneco in the quarter. He also has a new undisclosed position in an unnamed stock -- an unusual step that requires a separate filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
\n
Dan Loeb's Third Point added SentinelOne Class A to its investments and exited IAA in the second quarter. The fund also added to its holdings in Intel, boosting its stake to 14 million shares from 1 million, while decreasing its stake in Charter Communications Class A. Upstart Holdings was Third Point's biggest holding, representing 9.8% of disclosed assets
\n
Elliott Investment Management’s largest purchases of the quarter included a 3-million-share buy of Twitter. The increase in shares comes despite Elliott partner Jesse Cohn’s departure from Twitter’s board on June 9. He originally joined the board as part of a partnership Twitter entered with Elliott and Sliver Lake on March 9, 2020.
\n
Singapore state-owned investment fund Temasek Holdings’s largest new purchase in the quarter was a 4.84-million-share position in Airbnb. Airbnb reported strong second-quarter earnings last week that were offset by tepid guidance, according to analysts. Temasek also disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global.
\n
\n
Here are some other moves made by prominent funds tracked by He also has a new undisclosed position in an unnamed stock -- an unusual step that requires a separate filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.\nDan Loeb's Third Point added SentinelOne Class A to its investments and exited IAA in the second quarter. The fund also added to its holdings in Intel, boosting its stake to 14 million shares from 1 million, while decreasing its stake in Charter Communications Class A. Upstart Holdings was Third Point's biggest holding, representing 9.8% of disclosed assets\nElliott Investment Management’s largest purchases of the quarter included a 3-million-share buy of Twitter. The increase in shares comes despite Elliott partner Jesse Cohn’s departure from Twitter’s board on June 9. He originally joined the board as part of a partnership Twitter entered with Elliott and Sliver Lake on March 9, 2020.\nSingapore state-owned investment fund Temasek Holdings’s largest new purchase in the quarter was a 4.84-million-share position in Airbnb. Airbnb reported strong second-quarter earnings last week that were offset by tepid guidance, according to analysts. Temasek also disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global.\n\nHere are some other moves made by prominent funds tracked by Bloomberg:\nAPPALOOSA\n\nTop new buys: UBER, It follows a probe by the Securities and Exchange Commission into the company and public comments made by executives, including its former chairman and CEO Steve Burns.\nLordstown Motors said in a filing Thursday that it has \"received two subpoenas from the SEC for the production of documents and information, including relating to the Merger between DiamondPeak and Legacy Lordstown and pre-orders of vehicles, and we have been informed by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York that it is investigating these matters.\"\nThe company said it has \"cooperated, and will continue to cooperate, with these and any other regulatory or governmental investigations and inquiries.\"\nBurns and his CFO exited the SPAC-backed company following an internal investigation that found \"issues regarding the accuracy of certain statements\" around Lordstown's preorders, specifically the seriousness of the orders and who was making them.\nIn May, short seller Hindenburg Research claimed the company misled investors, including using \"fake\" orders to raise capital for its Endurance electric pickup. The short seller also said the pickup was years away from production. Lordstown has maintained it's on track to start making the vehicle in September.\nLordstown previously said the internal investigation found Hindenburg's report \"is, in significant respects, false and misleading.\"\nLordstown went public through a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, in October. It is among a growing group of electric vehicle start-ups going public through deals with SPACs, which have become a popular way of raising money on Wall Street because they have a more streamlined regulatory process than traditional initial public offerings.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":156,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":891283629,"gmtCreate":1628391674261,"gmtModify":1703505738780,"author":{"id":"3554935180693279","authorId":"3554935180693279","name":"chefbean","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/75bcdd1d22221ef3b8f10c64b73ea420","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3554935180693279","authorIdStr":"3554935180693279"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hi","listText":"Hi","text":"Hi","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/891283629","repostId":"1180529438","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1180529438","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1628386129,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1180529438?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-08-08 09:28","market":"us","language":"en","title":"SEC Moves First DeFi Unregistered Securities Lawsuit","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1180529438","media":"Benzinga","summary":"The United States Securities and Exchange Commission sued the organization responsible for the development of a decentralized finance protocol over activities involved with the project for the first time. What Happened: According to a Friday SEC announcement, the agency has sued Cayman Islands-based Blockchain Credit Partners and two of its top executives over allegedly selling unregistered securities through its DeFi Money Market platform from February 2020 to February 2021. The firm purportedly sold over $30 million worth of two types of tokens that the SEC deemed to be securities that should have been registered as such.
\n
The SEC notes that Blockchain Credit Partners founders Gregory Keough and Derek Acree will have to pay fines of $125,000 while the company itself also agreed to pay $12.8 million in disgorgement. The settlement does not indicate an admition or denial the accusations.
\n
New Game, Old Rules?
\n
SEC Enforcement Director Gurbir Grewal explained that \"full and honest disclosure remains the cornerstone of our securities laws — no matter what technologies are used to offer and sell those securities.\" This comment makes it very clear that slapping the DeFi label on a project and hoping to avoid regulation this way works no better than calling it a \"utility token\" prevented falling under the SEC's scrutiny during 2017's initial coin offering craze.
\n
The SEC is trying to send the clear rule that the new kind of financial organizations that operate on blockchains have to still play by the old rules that govern traditional finance. At the same time, market onlookers are not sure if the regulator is actually right.
\n
In a way, it is a tour de force where the regulator wins every time it has a way to take enforcement action, but these new organizations potentially have a very real way to make enforcement impossible — or at the very least impractical. The only protection against enforcement by the SEC and other regulators is decentralization and the only reason why the SEC was able to act in this case is that a centralized organization such as Blockchain Credit Partners exists.
\n
What's Next:If no company exists and all that there is to a DeFi protocol is a set of smart contracts deployed on a blockchain by a group of anonymous developers scattered around the world there is very little that the SEC can do short of attacking the blockchain itself. This is where the decentralization of the underlying blockchain comes into play: will the regulators for instance be able to force Ethereum's (CRYPTO: ETH) core development team to write an update stopping such a project?
\n
If the regulators would actually be able to force the blockchain's developers to write such an update, would node operators and miners or stakers adopt this software or would they refuse to? Such situations will be the real test of the decentralization and reliability of any blockchain that many are waiting to happen. The boards of directors of both companies approved the transaction, according to a statement Tuesday.
\n
Ordinarily a giant in the vaccines space, Sanofi is playing catch-up with Covid after upstarts BioNTech SE and Moderna Inc. raced ahead with highly effective mRNA shots that have now been injected into arms more than a billion times. Those two companies have been lavishly rewarded for their pioneering work, with Moderna’s market valuation rocketing toward $140 billion as of Monday and BioNTech’s valuation now exceeding $80 billion.
\n
Pfizer Inc., which is partnered with Germany’s BioNTech, said last week that their Covid shot could bring in $33.5 billion in revenue this year alone.
\n
“Our goal is to unlock the potential of mRNA in other strategic areas such as immunology, oncology and rare diseases in addition to vaccines,” Sanofi Chief Executive Officer Paul Hudson said in the statement.
\n
Sanofi hasn’t brought a Covid vaccine to market yet. Its leading candidate is based on the recombinant-protein technology already in use in the company’s seasonal flu shots. That product, which was subject to months of delays, is now in a late-stage trial and could be cleared by regulators by the end of this year.
\n
But Sanofi has also been developing an mRNA Covid shot with Translate Bio since March 2020. That effort grew out of a partnership between the companies, forged in 2018, to develop mRNA vaccines for as many as five infectious-disease pathogens. Their Covid candidate is currently in an early-stage trial, with results expected by the end of September, and it could be approved, if all goes well, in 2022.
\n
Product Pipeline
\n
Translate Bio, based in Lexington, Massachusetts, also has an early-stage vaccine for influenza with Sanofi, with results expected later this year. Its pipeline of other products includes experimental therapies for cystic fibrosis and other lung ailments, along with treatments for diseases that affect the liver.
\n
Translate Bio CEO Ronald Renaud and its largest shareholder, The Baupost Group LLC, have both signed binding commitments to support the tender offer, with their stakes and shares already held by Sanofi representing about 30% of total outstanding stock, the statement said. Sanofi expects to close the deal later this quarter.
\n
In June, Sanofi announced plans to invest about $480 million a year in mRNA technology with a newly created “center of excellence” focused on everything from basic research to manufacturing. The boards of directors of both companies approved the transaction, according to a statement Tuesday.\nOrdinarily a giant in the vaccines space, Sanofi is playing catch-up with Covid after upstarts BioNTech SE and Moderna Inc. raced ahead with highly effective mRNA shots that have now been injected into arms more than a billion times. Those two companies have been lavishly rewarded for their pioneering work, with Moderna’s market valuation rocketing toward $140 billion as of Monday and BioNTech’s valuation now exceeding $80 billion.\nPfizer Inc., which is partnered with Germany’s BioNTech, said last week that their Covid shot could bring in $33.5 billion in revenue this year alone.\n“Our goal is to unlock the potential of mRNA in other strategic areas such as immunology, oncology and rare diseases in addition to vaccines,” Sanofi Chief Executive Officer Paul Hudson said in the statement.\nSanofi hasn’t brought a Covid vaccine to market yet. Its leading candidate is based on the recombinant-protein technology already in use in the company’s seasonal flu shots. That product, which was subject to months of delays, is now in a late-stage trial and could be cleared by regulators by the end of this year.\nBut Sanofi has also been developing an mRNA Covid shot with Translate Bio since March 2020. That effort grew out of a partnership between the companies, forged in 2018, to develop mRNA vaccines for as many as five infectious-disease pathogens. Their Covid candidate is currently in an early-stage trial, with results expected by the end of September, and it could be approved, if all goes well, in 2022.\nProduct Pipeline\nTranslate Bio, based in Lexington, Massachusetts, also has an early-stage vaccine for influenza with Sanofi, with results expected later this year. Its pipeline of other products includes experimental therapies for cystic fibrosis and other lung ailments, along with treatments for diseases that affect the liver.\nTranslate Bio CEO Ronald Renaud and its largest shareholder, The Baupost Group LLC, have both signed binding commitments to support the tender offer, with their stakes and shares already held by Sanofi representing about 30% of total outstanding stock, the statement said. Sanofi expects to close the deal later this quarter.\nIn June, Sanofi announced plans to invest about $480 million a year in mRNA technology with a newly created “center of excellence” focused on everything from basic research to manufacturing. That initiative is aimed at speeding up the pipeline of mRNA products being developed by Sanofi and Translate Bio, along with making mRNA shots that are more stable at average temperatures and less likely to cause side effects.\nSanofi expects at least six mRNA vaccine candidates in clinical trials by 2025.\nTranslate Bio surged over 29% in premarket trading, Sanofi was up 0.08% in premarket trading.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":259,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9041928646,"gmtCreate":1655997374185,"gmtModify":1676535747480,"author":{"id":"3554935180693279","authorId":"3554935180693279","name":"chefbean","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/75bcdd1d22221ef3b8f10c64b73ea420","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3554935180693279","authorIdStr":"3554935180693279"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GREAT EASTERN HLDGS LTD(G07.SI)$Hee","listText":"$GREAT EASTERN HLDGS LTD(G07.SI)$Hee","text":"$GREAT EASTERN HLDGS LTD(G07.SI)$Hee","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/fdcc8ebc9da93c0b46337faecf89dd8b","width":"1125","height":"2949"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9041928646","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":100,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9093747727,"gmtCreate":1643721881957,"gmtModify":1676533848335,"author":{"id":"3554935180693279","authorId":"3554935180693279","name":"chefbean","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/75bcdd1d22221ef3b8f10c64b73ea420","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3554935180693279","authorIdStr":"3554935180693279"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Eee","listText":"Eee","text":"Eee","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9093747727","repostId":"1140126482","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1140126482","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1643720446,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1140126482?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-02-01 21:00","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Pre-Bell|U.S. stock index futures eased on Tuesday; AMC preliminary Q4 revenue tops consensus","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1140126482","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"U.S. stock index futures eased on Tuesday ahead of data on manufacturing activity and job openings.M","content":"

U.S. stock index futures eased on Tuesday ahead of data on manufacturing activity and job openings.

Market Snapshot

At 8 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 31 points, or 0.09%, S&P 500 e-minis were down 5.75 points, or 0.13%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 24.5 points, or 0.16%.

Pre-Market Movers

AT&T Inc (T) – AT&T announced plans to spin off its stake in the WarnerMedia/Discovery Communications(DISCA) combination to its shareholders when that merger is completed later this year. "We're looking at this sort of aggressive tightening against this backdrop of inflation, and I think that that's what's causing the volatility."

On Friday, the Bureau of Economic Analysis will release its monthly personal consumption expenditures (PCE) deflator, offering a fresh print on the extent of price increases across the recovering economy.

Consensus economists expect the PCE to post a rise of another 0.6% in January, according to Bloomberg data, accelerating from December's 0.4% increase. This would represent a 14th consecutive monthly increase, and bring the index up by 6.0% on a year-over-year basis. This, in turn, would mark the fastest increase since 1982, and also accelerate from December's 5.8% annual rise.

The core PCE index — the Fed's preferred gauge of underlying inflation stripping out volatile food and energy prices — likely also ramped compared to December's index. Consensus economists are looking for a 5.2% increase in core PCE in January, compared to December's 4.9% rise.

Expectations for the latest inflation print suggest the economy has still not yet seen the peak in price increases. And increasingly, central bank officials have come around to the notion that inflation has remained stickier than previously expected, especially as supply chain issues and virus-related disruptions persist.

"Since the December meeting, I would say that the inflation situation is about the same but probably slightly worse," Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in a January press conference. "I’d be inclined to raise my own estimate of 2022 core PCE inflation ... by a few tenths today."

And the latest print on PCE will likely reaffirm readings from other closely watched inflation prints. The January Consumer Price Index (CPI) jumped by 7.5% year-over-year to represent the largest increase since 1982, accelerating markedly from the 7.0% increase from December. And on the producer side, wholesale prices jumped 9.7% year-on-year in January, ticking down only slightly from December's record increase of 9.8%.

Consumer confidence

Despite the mounting inflationary pressures, however, consumers have largely continued to spend. Retail sales rose by a better-than-expected 3.8% in January, marking the biggest jump since March 2021 and exceeding estimates.

And this steady consumption has come even as consumers increasingly cited inflation as a key concern for their own personal finances. Average hourly wages have also climbed in recent months, but have still not kept pace with inflation.

"The resilience of spending stands in stark contrast to the slump in consumer confidence, with households upping their purchases of big ticket items while simultaneously reporting that now is a particularly bad time to make those purchases," Paul Ashworth, chief North American economist for Capital Economics, wrote in a note. "The surge in inflation is the root cause of consumer angst. Sentiment should improve as inflation falls back later this year, but the current weakness is a reminder that real consumption growth will be muted this year."

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index due for release on Tuesday will help provide a timely snapshot of consumers' thinking following the latest spike in prices at the beginning of the year. Consensus economists are looking for the index to fall to 110.0 for February, which would mark the lowest level since September 2021, when the Delta variant had weighed on consumers' outlooks. The consumer confidence index had been at 113.8 in January.

Earnings season rolls on

Investors will also receive a number of new earnings results this week, with major retailers including Home Depot (HD), Lowe's (LOW), Macy's (M) and The TJX Cos. (TJX) reporting alongside other closely watched names from Coinbase (COIN) to Wayfair (W) and Nikola (NKLA).

So far this earnings season, corporate profits have remained robust, albeit while slowing compared to prior quarters. As of Friday, 84% of S&P 500 companies had reported actual fourth-quarter earnings results, according to FactSet. And the estimated earnings growth rate for S&P 500 companies in aggregate stood at 30.9%, compared to about 40% from the third quarter.

Still, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter has trended continuously higher as more companies reported better-than-expected results. On December 31, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter had been at just 21.2%.

But while results for many companies have been positive for the final three months of 2021, outlooks have weakened, reflecting lingering supply chain uncertainty, rising prices and other macro concerns. FactSet noted that of companies that held their earnings conference calls between Dec. 15 and Feb. 17, 72% of the corporations mentioned "inflation."

"In terms of earnings guidance from corporations, 71% of the S&P 500 companies (55 out of 77) that have issued EPS [earnings per share] guidance for Q1 2022 have issued negative guidance," FactSet's John Butters wrote in a note Friday. "This is the highest percentage of S&P 500 companies issuing negative guidance since Q3 2019 (73%)."

"Thus, the market may be reacting more to the negative earnings guidance and downward estimates revisions for the first quarter of 2022 than the earnings surprises being reported for the fourth-quarter of 2021," Butters added.

Economic calendar

Monday: No notable reports scheduled for release

Tuesday: FHFA House Price Index, December (1.1% expected, 1.1% in November); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, December month-over-month (1.10% expected, 1.18% in November); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, December year-over-year (18.30% expected, 18.29% in November); Markit U.S. Manufacturing PMI, February preliminary (56.0 expected, 55.5 in January); Markit U.S. Services PMI, February preliminary (53.0 expected, 51.2 in January); Markit U.S. Composite PMI, February preliminary (51.1 in January); Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, February (110.0 expected, 113.8 in January); Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index, February (10 expected, 8 in January)

Wednesday: MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended February 18 (-5.4% during prior week)

Thursday: Chicago Fed National Activity Index, January (-0.15 in December); GDP annualized, quarter-over-quarter, 4Q second estimate (7.0% expected, 6.9% in prior estimate); Personal consumption, 4Q second estimate (3.3% expected, 3.3% in prior estimate); Core PCE quarter-over-quarter, 4Q second estimate (4.9% expected, 4.9% in prior estimate); Kansas City Fed Manufacturing Activity, February (24 in January)

Friday: Personal income, January (-0.4%, 0.3% in December); Personal spending, January (1.5% expected, -0.6% in December); Durable Goods Orders, January preliminary (0.9% -0.7% in December); Durable Goods Orders excluding transportation, January preliminary (0.3% expected, 0.6% in December); PCE deflator, January year-over-year (6.0% expected, 5.8% in December); PCE deflator, January month-over-month (0.6% expected, 0.4% in December); PCE core deflator, January year-over-year (5.2% expected, 4.9% in December); PCE core deflator, January month-over-month (0.5% expected, 0.5% in December)

Earnings calendar

Monday

No notable reports scheduled for release

Tuesday

Before market open: Apache Corp. And updates on tensions in Russia and Ukraine will also remain in focus throughout the week after stocks sank to their lowest levels in a month on Friday, amid concerns about the escalating geopolitical conflict. While the emerging threat of military conflict has overshadowed many other worries in the markets, inflation has still remained a central issue for investors. Inflation has implications both in informing the speed at which the Federal Reserve tightens monetary policy, and the extent to which consumers pull back on spending and slow overall economic activity in response to rising prices.\"I really think most of the Russia-Ukraine volatility occurred in the energy space, particularly with oil.
