Why is there no love for CRSR?

With liquidity at all time high, it is normal to find companies with forward PE of >25. This is espeically true for tech companies with projected growth in the double digits.So, why is Cosair Gaming (CRSR), one of leaders in gaming and streaming hardware have such a low foward PE of <20?As far as I can find, there is absolutely nothing wrong with CRSR. And as a gamer myself, their products are often comparable with the best in business ( Logitech, Razor, Noctua ). They also have more or less a monopoly for high end DRAM sticks and streaming equipments.However, in the short term, the stock price isnt decided by valuations. With the broader tech sell-off and renowned short-seller Jim Chanos taking aim at the company, the perfect storm could be in the works as the stock looks to bottom out and regain its footing.Coinbase stock shed around 58% of its value from peak to trough and is now attempting to move on from its brief plunge just north of $150 per share. Now, it’s never a good idea to be on the receiving end of a short-seller, especially one as famed as Jim Chanos.Although the shorts may be inclined to talk up their book after there’s already a considerable amount of negative momentum behind it, there are potential pitfalls of catching the falling knife that is Coinbase. I am bearish.Jim Chanos Refers to Coinbase as a ‘Bubble Stock‘A few weeks ago, Chanos referred to Coinbase as a “bubble stock.” Indeed, Chanos’ track record speaks for itself. Although Chanos’ alarming statements shouldn’t be taken as gospel, they should cause one to re-evaluate their theses to ensure that the narrative still holds.In prior pieces, I outlined the high risks involved with a name like Coinbase. Although the firm stood out as one of the more intriguing publicly traded ways to play a bet on the crypto markets, the price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple is so depressed for a reason.At 13 times trailing earnings, COIN stock seems like more of a bargain to take advantage of amid the tech-driven sell-off. With a trading frenzy in the rear-view mirror, though, it will be tough to stack up against past quarters now that the risk appetite has plunged.Chanos thinks Coinbase is “overearning” and that increased competition will weigh on the platform’s above-average margins. Just how much fee compression could be in the cards at the hands of rivals? Chanos thinks enough such that the firm “will probably not be profitable this year,”Indeed, I remarked on Coinbase’s loftier fees relative to competitors in past pieces but thought they were somewhat justified, given Coinbase was a more established and trusted presence in the crypto exchange scene.Competition Coming?Relative to the current slate of rivals, I’d argue Coinbase can still justify its loftier fees.That said, Coinbase’s days of being able to command higher fees may be numbered if a trusted behemoth like PayPal (PYPL) were to make a deeper dive into the crypto waters. Given PayPal’s recent embrace of cryptocurrencies, a case could be made that the crypto brokerages could be headed for the same “race to zero” faced by stock brokerages many years ago.In any case, I agree with Chanos in that Coinbase’s road ahead doesn’t look half as bright as the road behind it.Cyclical Nature of BitcoinInterest in cryptocurrencies still seems high, given numerous issues at the macro level. The server-breaking popularity of Coinbase’s Super Bowl advertisement was nothing short of remarkable. With Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies warming up in the latter half of the first quarter, Coinbase stock may have the stage set for a larger relief rally.However, it is important to note that sentiment in the crypto space can change at the drop of a hat. For that reason, it’s tough to value a company like Coinbase, given how heavily its stock can be influenced by external factors that move the broader basket of cryptocurrencies.Bitcoin’s boom and bust nature is nothing new. The next bust is inevitable, and it could be just as violent as past downturns that saw crypto exchange commercials vanish for many months at a time. If the broader crypto markets were to go bust, it would be nearly impossible for Coinbase to avoid a plunge of similar magnitude.Wall Street’s TakeAccording to TipRanks’ analyst rating consensus, COIN stock comes in as a Moderate Buy. Out of 17 analyst ratings, there are 13 Buy recommendations, two Hold recommendations, and two Sell recommendations.The average Coinbase price target is $304.94, implying 62.7% upside potential. Analyst price targets range from a low of $135 per share to a high of $500 per share.Bottom Line on Coinbase StockCoinbase is coming off an incredible year, and Chanos may be right in that the company is “overearning.” Indeed, the low P/E multiple may already reflect such. Though Coinbase may face an uphill battle this year, it remains impossible to gauge how the crypto markets will fare this year, given the crisis unfolding in Ukraine.Further, I wouldn’t discount Coinbase’s ability to resist the fee pressure as rivals loom.Arguably, it already has. For every one share you own, you'll have 19 more after the split. But the total value of your holding remains the same. Imagine a pie cut into slices. Whether you buy the pie uncut or cut into slices, its value doesn't change. It's been a roadblock for certain individual investors who want to make a small initial investment. Amazon stock reached a high of more than $3,600 last year. It's since come down to the $2,800 range. Of course, there's the possibility of buying fractional shares. But not all brokerage firms offer them. And some investors prefer buying at least one full share or more of a company.The stock split -- considering today's price -- will take the price of each share down to about $150. If shareholders approve the plan during the annual meeting in May, the split will happen in early June. So, the stock split opens the door to making investment in Amazon a little easier for a wide range of investors. As a result, more of them may buy shares of the retail giant.That's great news for shareholders and potential shareholders. But the split itself isn't the reason to buy Amazon. That's just a little plus that may jump-start share performance in the coming months. Here's the reason to add Amazon to your portfolio for the long term: The strength of its e-commerce and cloud computing businesses.Amazon has been growing annual revenue and net income for a number of years -- and both figures have reached well into the billions.AMZN Net Income (Annual) data by YChartsA leader in both businessesThe company is a leader in both of its businesses. First, let's look at retail. Amazon accounts for about 40% of total U.S. e-commerce sales, according to Insider Intelligence. And we can count on Amazon maintaining leadership thanks to growth in its subscription service, Prime. Various fast and free delivery options mean members are likely to favor ordering on Amazon versus anywhere else. In the fourth quarter, Amazon said it added \"millions\" of new Prime members worldwide.As for cloud computing, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has continued to maintain a 32% to 33% share of the market over the past four years, according to Synergy Research Group. The closest rival is Microsoft, with a 21% share. AWS has picked up major contracts in recent months -- such as a deal to support Nasdaq's markets. The electrification of consumer vehicles and enterprise fleets, and the desire by most countries to reduce their carbon footprints and halt climate change in its tracks, mean that we're witnessing the beginning of what could be a multidecade vehicle replacement cycle.According to a survey conducted late last year by KPMG, the average forecast of the more than 1,000 global auto leaders KPMG spoke to was for worldwide electric vehicle (EV) sales to reach roughly 50% of all autos sold by 2030.  Meanwhile, a November report from Market Research Future calls for the EV industry to hit $957 billion in market value by 2030, which is more than quadruple its value at the end of 2021.Although investing in EV growth looks like a no-brainer opportunity, not all stocks associated with the electrification of autos will be winners. While I believe one name can be bought hand over fist (I'll get to this company in a bit), there are two EV stocks that should be avoided like the plague.Two all-electric Rivian R1Ts. Image source: Rivian Automotive.The first EV stock to avoid: Rivian AutomotiveOn the surface, Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN), which was one of 2021's hottest initial public offerings (IPOs), looks like it has the tools to be successful. The company will offer three differentiated vehicles -- the R1T pickup truck, the R1S SUV, and the EDV electric van -- with planned annual capacity ranging from 200,000 vehicles at its Illinois factory to 400,000 at its Georgia plant. The latter is an estimated figure, with Rivian spending a cool $5 billion to build the factory. Production is anticipated to begin by 2024.Rivian also has an order for 100,000 EDVs from Amazon, which it received in 2019. The sheer size of this order has validated Rivian as a player of interest in the EV space for years.But the flipside to Rivian is that it's still very wet behind the ears. The company produced only 1,015 EVs in 2021 and had its IPO with no trailing-12-month sales. It missed an already low production bar for 2021, and will likely deal with the same supply chain constraints affecting the entire industry. In other words, Rivian's trajectory is bound to hit numerous speed bumps and potholes. It's par for the course when building an EV company from the ground up.Making matters worse, Rivian finds itself in hot water with the public after announcing, then walking back (for those who ordered before March 1), a price hike of $12,000 on its quad-motor models. Higher material costs are forcing automakers to boost prices. While Rivian was simply following the pack, a $12,000 price hike on vehicles that already cost $70,000 (or more) didn't sit well with customers. If Rivian isn't careful, it could price customers out of buying its vehicles.While Rivian could eventually grow into an investment-worthy company in the EV space, it has little business being valued at $45 billion.The all-electric Nikola Badger got the ax before it even rolled off the production line. Image source: Nikola.The second EV stock to avoid: NikolaWell before Rivian was the hottest thing in the EV space, Nikola (NASDAQ:NKLA) was making waves. It was one of many companies that went public via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). On June 9, 2020, Nikola hit an intraday high of nearly $94 a share. Unfortunately, those same shares were trading hands for $7 and change as of March 3, 2022.The initial buzz for Nikola had to do with its introduction of the Badger in February 2020. The Badger was to be a battery EV (BEV) or fuel-cell EV (FCEV) pickup truck with an estimated 600-mile range and a reasonably low $60,000 price tag. When coupled with Nikola's ambitions to also build BEV and FCEV semi trucks, Wall Street was enamored, at least initially, with the company's potential. Then the proverbial wheels fell off.Over the course of the next year and a half, the Badger would be shelved before it even rolled off the production line. This was due, in part, to Nikola being unable to land a manufacturing partner for the truck. Though it looked as if General Motors would step up and be that partner, an eventual agreement between the two companies didn't include the Badger.Worse yet, a handful of allegations of wrongdoing levied by short-side firm Hindenburg Research against Nikola proved to be true. An independent review found that pre-order figures were exaggerated. This resulted in a probe by the Securities and Exchange Commission, leading to former CEO Trevor Milton being indicted on three counts of fraud this past July.Today, Nikola is only just beginning to deliver its first BEV semi trucks. Even though it's received a couple of letter-of-intent orders during the fourth quarter for its semi trucks, it's not clear if the company has the capital necessary to ramp up production and ward off significant quarterly losses. Image source: Nio.The EV stock to buy hand over fist: NioOn the other end of the spectrum is Nio (NYSE:NIO), which checks all the appropriate boxes and can be bought hand over fist following its recent pullback.I'll freely admit that, a little over a year ago, I had Nio in the same camp as Nikola -- i.e., Avoid! Avoid! Avoid! At one point, Nio's valuation topped $90 billion with the company pacing for only around 20,000 EVs in production annually. Its valuation just didn't make any sense.However, management has really impressed with its ability to boost production in a challenging environment. Though the Chinese New Year held back production in February, and supply chain issues curbed output in January, Nio managed to top 10,000 deliveries in both November and December. Management has offered guidance suggesting that the company can hit 50,000 deliveries monthly by the end of the year. This would work out to an annual run-rate of around 600,000 EVs.Fueling this production surge is Nio's existing line of EVs, as well as the introduction of three new vehicles. Until now, the company's premium SUVs (the ES8 and ES6) and crossover EV (the ES6) have received plenty of interest. But the next wave of growth will come from the deliveries of the ET7 and ET5, which are EV sedans that take direct aim at Tesla's Model S and Model 3, respectively. With the top-tier battery option, Nio claims an estimated range of approximately 621 miles for its sedans.Furthermore, the battery-as-a-service (BaaS) program that was unveiled in August 2020 by management is pure genius. For buyers, BaaS lowers the initial purchase price of their vehicle and gives them the option to charge, swap, or upgrade their batteries at a later date. For Nio, it trades lower-margin near-term sales for high-margin fee-based revenue (buyers pay a monthly fee for the BaaS program) that keeps buyers loyal to the brand.And did I mention Nio is based in China, the world's largest auto market? The value was so low it appeared as zero on price charts.</p>\n<p>In a way, it’s a cautionary tale as old as Wall Street -- retail speculators burned by byzantine derivatives -- amplified by a lack of regulation, croaky market plumbing and the extreme volatility of the $1.3 trillion crypto world.</p>\n<p>It’s hard to know exactly how much value was wiped out. But a growing band of disgruntled Binance users are now organizing to pressure -- with a combination of social media and legal threats -- the exchange to compensate their losses. Regulators have also taken notice, with Binance facing increasing scrutiny in Asia, North America and Europe.</p>\n<p>Holland’s records show from April to May 19 he put roughly $2,700 in the bearish tokens through a series of trades. Down tokens tied to the Litecoin and Tezos cryptocurrencies lost money despite betting on the right direction. Polkadot’s down token ended up worth less than three cents, plunging 95% from the prior day. At one point, both the tokens wagering on and against Ethereum were down roughly 75%.</p>\n<p>May 19 was a day of tumult overall, with crypto platforms including Binance and Coinbase suffering disruptions to regular trading after negative tweets from Elon Musk and tightening restrictions in China sent investors fleeing.</p>\n<p>As more traders wanted to cash out of bearish leveraged tokens, Binance said the outflows caused the leverage ratio to spike in some cases. When the program was forced to trim its short exposure in a rocky and illiquid market to lower the ratio again, it ended up losing money due to market conditions.</p>\n<p>In other words, the product was forced to keep cutting positions at the worst time. That day, the Ethereum down tokens rebalanced 21 times, the majority of which happened over half an hour.</p>\n<p>“We should note, nevertheless, that there were no identifiable issues or errors with the BLVT during the period,” a spokesman said in an email. “Binance users are informed in advance of the risks associated with any trading activities,” including through a training video and test of their understanding.</p>\n<p>In the depths of the selloff, the platform suspended trading for most leveraged tokens. It now no longer allows tokens to be subscribed or redeemed during rebalancing.</p>\n<p>The product is somewhat similar to leveraged exchange-traded funds, which typically rebalance at the end of each day to maintain a particular exposure. The difference is the Binance tokens only rebalance whenever the leverage ratio swings out of the 1.25-to-4-time range and based on a proprietary algorithm that determines the ratio.</p>\n<p>One problem with the absence of regular rebalancing is the product would naturally get more leveraged just as the market is moving against it, warns Tim Leung, a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Washington who’s written a book about leveraged ETFs.</p>\n<p>“It’s too opaque,” he said, commenting generally on a retail product structured this way. “An investor is looking at the historical leverage ratio and thinking it should be 2x, but there’s no guarantee the future leverage ratio is going to be two.”</p>\n<p>There’s little retail traders can do by way of regulatory recourse. Binance operates as a constellation of entities in multiple jurisdictions, and its terms say that any disputes need to go through individual arbitration in Hong Kong and cannot give rise to class-action claims.</p>\n<p>For Holland, it’s yet another blow to his long-time faith in cryptocurrencies. Or as Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, says: “Inflation is one of the mysteries of economic study and thought. A difficult thing to gauge and forecast and get right. That’s why the risks are high.”</p>\n<p>The current debate over inflation really revolves around two questions: First, is this current spate of inflation, just that, a spate—or to use Wall Street’s buzzword of the moment, “transitory,”—or not? (Just to give you an idea of how buzzy, when I Google the word “transitory” the search engine suggests “inflation” after it.) And second, transitory (aka temporary) inflation or not, what does it suggest for the economy and markets?</p>\n<p>Before I get into that, let me lay out what’s going on with prices right now. First, know that inflation,which peaked in 1980 at an annualized rate of 13.55%,has been tame for quite some time, specifically 4% or less for nearly 30 years. Which means that anyone 40 years old or younger has no experience with inflation other than maybe from an Econ 101 textbook. Obviously that could be a problem.</p>\n<p>As an aside I remember President Ford in 1974 trying to jawbone inflation down with his \"Whip Inflation Now\" campaign, which featured“Win” buttons,earringsand evenugly sweaters.None of this worked and it took draconian measures by Fed Chair Paul Volcker (raising rates and targeting money supply,as described by Former President of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, William Poole)to eventually tame inflation and keep it under wraps for all those years.</p>\n<p>Until now perhaps. Last week theLabor Department reported that consumer prices (the CPI, or consumer price index) rose 5% in May,the fastest annual rate in nearly 13 years—which was when the economy was overheating from the housing boom which subsequently went bust and sent the economy off a cliff and into the Great Recession. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was up 3.8%, the biggest increase since May 1992. (For the record, the likelihood of the economy tanking right now is de minimis.)</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/87f75dfcb98fb5a0e7c3f9d3f8d336e2\" tg-width=\"705\" tg-height=\"412\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Used car and truck prices are a major driver of inflation, climbing 7.3% last month and 29.7% over the past year. New car prices are up too, which have pushed upshares of Ford and GM a remarkable 40% plus this year.Clearly Americans want to buy vehicles to go on vacation and get back to work. And Yahoo Finance’sJanna Herron reportsthat rents are rising at their fastest pace in 15 years.</p>\n<p>To be sure, not all prices are climbing.As Yahoo Finance’s Rick Newman points out,prices are not up much at all for health care, education and are basically flat for technology, including computers, smartphones and internet service (an important point which we’ll get back to.)</p>\n<p>But that’s the counterpoint really. Americans are obsessed with cars, housing is critical and many of us are experiencing sticker shock booking travel this summer. Higher prices are front and center. Wall Street too is in a tizzy about inflation, and concerns about it and more importantly Federal Reserve policy in response to inflation (see below), sent stocks lower with the S&amp;P 500 down 1.91% this week, its worst week since February.</p>\n<p>Given this backdrop, the tension (such as it is) was high when the Fed met this week to deliver its forecast and for Chair Jay Powell to answer questions from the media. Or at least so said hedge fund honcho Paul Tudor Jones,who characterized the proceedings on CNBCas “the most important meeting in [Chairman] Jay Powell’s career, certainly the most important Fed meeting of the past four or five years.” Jones was critical of the Fed, which he believes is now stimulating the economy unnecessarily by keeping interest rates low and by buying financial assets. Unnecessarily, Jones says, because the economy is already running hot and needs no support. The Fed (which is in the transitory camp when it comes to inflation) risks overheating the economy by creating runaway inflation, according to PTJ.</p>\n<p>Now I don’t see eye to eye with Jones on this, though I should point out, he's a billionaire from investing in financial markets, and let’s just say I’m not. I should also point out that Jones, 66, is in fact old enough to remember inflation, never mind that as a young man he called the 1987 stock market crash. So we should all ignore Jones at our peril.</p>\n<p>As for what the Fed put forth this past Wednesday, well it wasn’t much, signaling an expectation ofraising interest rates twice by the end of 2023(yes, that is down the road.) Bottom line: Unless something terrible happens, the power of technology will outweigh and outlive COVID.</p>\n<p>There is one mitigating factor and that is globalism, which is connected to both technology and COVID. Let me briefly explain.</p>\n<p>After World War II, most of humanity has become more and more connected in terms of trade, communication, travel, etc. (See supply chain above.) And like technology, globalization seemed inexorable, which it was, until it wasn’t. Political winds, manifested by the likes of Brexit and leaders like Putin, Xi Jinping, Erdogan, Bolsonaro, Duterte and of course Donald Trump have caused globalism to wane and anti-globalism and nationalism to wax.</p>\n<p>The internet too, once seen as only a great connector, has also become a global divider, as the world increasingly fractures into Chinese, U.S. and European walled digital zones when it comes to social media and search for example. Security risks, privacy, spying and hacking of course divide us further here too.</p>\n<p>So technology, which had made globalism stronger and stronger, now also makes it weaker and weaker.</p>\n<p>COVID plays a role in rethinking globalism as it exposes vulnerabilities in the supply chain. Companies that were rethinking their manufacturing in China but considering another country, are now wondering if it just makes sense to repatriate the whole shebang. Supply chains that were optimized for cost only are being rethought with security and reliability being factored in and that costs money.</p>\n<p>How significant is this decline in globalization and how permanent is it? Good questions. But my point here is whether or not \"globalism disrupted\" is transitory (!) or not, it could push prices up, (in the short and intermediate run at least), as cost is sacrificed for predictability. Longer term I say Americans are a resourceful people. We’ll figure out how to make cost effective stuff in the U.S. It’s also likely that globalism will trend upward again, though perhaps not as unfettered as it once was.</p>\n<p>More downward pressure on pricing could come from shifts in employment practices. Mark Zandi points out that “the work-from-anywhere dynamic could depress wage growth and prices. If I don’t need to work in New York anymore and could live in Tampa, it stands to reason my wage could get cut or I won’t get the same wage increase in the future.”</p>\n<p>And so what is Zandi’s take on transitory? “What we’re observing now is prices going back to pre-pandemic,” he says. “The price spikes we’re experiencing now will continue for the next few months through summer but certainly by the end of year, this time next year, they will have disappeared. I do think underlying inflation will be higher post-pandemic than pre-pandemic, but that’s a feature not a bug.”</p>\n<p>I don’t disagree. (Just to give you an idea of how buzzy, when I Google the word “transitory” the search engine suggests “inflation” after it.) And second, transitory (aka temporary) inflation or not, what does it suggest for the economy and markets?\nBefore I get into that, let me lay out what’s going on with prices right now. First, know that inflation,which peaked in 1980 at an annualized rate of 13.55%,has been tame for quite some time, specifically 4% or less for nearly 30 years. Which means that anyone 40 years old or younger has no experience with inflation other than maybe from an Econ 101 textbook. Obviously that could be a problem.\nAs an aside I remember President Ford in 1974 trying to jawbone inflation down with his \"Whip Inflation Now\" campaign, which featured“Win” buttons,earringsand evenugly sweaters.None of this worked and it took draconian measures by Fed Chair Paul Volcker (raising rates and targeting money supply,as described by Former President of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, William Poole)to eventually tame inflation and keep it under wraps for all those years.\nUntil now perhaps. Last week theLabor Department reported that consumer prices (the CPI, or consumer price index) rose 5% in May,the fastest annual rate in nearly 13 years—which was when the economy was overheating from the housing boom which subsequently went bust and sent the economy off a cliff and into the Great Recession. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was up 3.8%, the biggest increase since May 1992. (For the record, the likelihood of the economy tanking right now is de minimis.)\n\nUsed car and truck prices are a major driver of inflation, climbing 7.3% last month and 29.7% over the past year. New car prices are up too, which have pushed upshares of Ford and GM a remarkable 40% plus this year.Clearly Americans want to buy vehicles to go on vacation and get back to work. The team is worth about$5.5 billiontoday. That’s an incredible return but, thanks to the magic of compounding, equals only about a 12% average annual return.</p><p>Cathie Wood’s&nbsp;Tesla (ticker: TSLA) target works out to a roughly 37% average annual return, should the stock hit $3,000 at the end of 2025. That’s three times what the NFL team earned Jones.</p><p>Stock targets farther out in the future, like Wood’s, can look surprising. But they aren’t comparable with traditional Wall Street price targets, which&nbsp;typically represent&nbsp;where analysts expect a stock to trade over the next year.</p><p>Turning Wood’s target into a year-end 2021 target, more comparable to the Street, requires a little math and an assumption. Tesla is a richly valued, high-growth stock—and a volatile one at that. That means risk to investors. And investors typically require higher returns for more risk, maybe 20% a year on average.</p><p>Taking that into consideration, Wood’s $3,000 target for 2025 translates to a roughly $1,400 year-end 2021 price target. Put another way: If an investor paid $1,400 for Tesla shares at the end of 2021 and Wood turned out to be correct about Tesla shares hitting $3,000 at the end of 2025, the investor would earn 20% a year on average.</p><p>The $1,400 figure is bullish but it isn’t way out there. Wedbush analyst&nbsp;Dan Ives&nbsp;has a bull-case price target on Tesla shares of $1,250 a share. Bull cases are Wall Street analysts’ most optimistic scenarios. Often, analysts will have a bear-case scenario too. Analyst’s price targets often sit somewhere in the middle. Ives rates Tesla shares Hold and his official target is $950 a share.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2212603f81934a60e44e8438009e422a\" tg-width=\"951\" tg-height=\"638\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Ives isn’t the only one with a bull-case price target. Morgan Stanley analystAdam Jonashas a bull-case Tesla target of $1,232 a share. Jonas rates Tesla shares Buy and his official price target for the stock is $810. RBC analystJoseph Spakrates Tesla shares Hold and his official target is the lowest of the three at $700 a share. His bull-case price target is $1,148 a share.</p><p>Wood’s price target is about 15% to 20% above the most bullish Wall Street projections. That’s a good way to view her $3,000 price target.</p><p>The missing part of this analysis is whether Wood or other Tesla bulls are correct. Whether or not Tesla stock ever hits $3,000 will come down to vehicle pricing, cost, market share, and competition. In market terms, 2025 is a long way away.</p><p>Tesla rose 2.3% Monday following Wood’s bullish report. Shares were up 0.2% on Tuesday. That’s an incredible return but, thanks to the magic of compounding, equals only about a 12% average annual return.Cathie Wood’s Tesla (ticker: TSLA) target works out to a roughly 37% average annual return, should the stock hit $3,000 at the end of 2025. That’s three times what the NFL team earned Jones.Stock targets farther out in the future, like Wood’s, can look surprising. But they aren’t comparable with traditional Wall Street price targets, which typically represent where analysts expect a stock to trade over the next year.Turning Wood’s target into a year-end 2021 target, more comparable to the Street, requires a little math and an assumption. Tesla is a richly valued, high-growth stock—and a volatile one at that. That means risk to investors. And investors typically require higher returns for more risk, maybe 20% a year on average.Taking that into consideration, Wood’s $3,000 target for 2025 translates to a roughly $1,400 year-end 2021 price target. Put another way: If an investor paid $1,400 for Tesla shares at the end of 2021 and Wood turned out to be correct about Tesla shares hitting $3,000 at the end of 2025, the investor would earn 20% a year on average.The $1,400 figure is bullish but it isn’t way out there. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives has a bull-case price target on Tesla shares of $1,250 a share. Bull cases are Wall Street analysts’ most optimistic scenarios. Often, analysts will have a bear-case scenario too. Analyst’s price targets often sit somewhere in the middle. Ives rates Tesla shares Hold and his official target is $950 a share.Ives isn’t the only one with a bull-case price target. Morgan Stanley analystAdam Jonashas a bull-case Tesla target of $1,232 a share. Jonas rates Tesla shares Buy and his official price target for the stock is $810. RBC analystJoseph Spakrates Tesla shares Hold and his official target is the lowest of the three at $700 a share. His bull-case price target is $1,148 a share.Wood’s price target is about 15% to 20% above the most bullish Wall Street projections. That’s a good way to view her $3,000 price target.The missing part of this analysis is whether Wood or other Tesla bulls are correct. Whether or not Tesla stock ever hits $3,000 will come down to vehicle pricing, cost, market share, and competition. The electrification of consumer vehicles and enterprise fleets, and the desire by most countries to reduce their carbon footprints and halt climate change in its tracks, mean that we're witnessing the beginning of what could be a multidecade vehicle replacement cycle.According to a survey conducted late last year by KPMG, the average forecast of the more than 1,000 global auto leaders KPMG spoke to was for worldwide electric vehicle (EV) sales to reach roughly 50% of all autos sold by 2030.  Meanwhile, a November report from Market Research Future calls for the EV industry to hit $957 billion in market value by 2030, which is more than quadruple its value at the end of 2021.Although investing in EV growth looks like a no-brainer opportunity, not all stocks associated with the electrification of autos will be winners. While I believe one name can be bought hand over fist (I'll get to this company in a bit), there are two EV stocks that should be avoided like the plague.Two all-electric Rivian R1Ts. Image source: Rivian Automotive.The first EV stock to avoid: Rivian AutomotiveOn the surface, Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN), which was one of 2021's hottest initial public offerings (IPOs), looks like it has the tools to be successful. The company will offer three differentiated vehicles -- the R1T pickup truck, the R1S SUV, and the EDV electric van -- with planned annual capacity ranging from 200,000 vehicles at its Illinois factory to 400,000 at its Georgia plant. The latter is an estimated figure, with Rivian spending a cool $5 billion to build the factory. Production is anticipated to begin by 2024.Rivian also has an order for 100,000 EDVs from Amazon, which it received in 2019. The sheer size of this order has validated Rivian as a player of interest in the EV space for years.But the flipside to Rivian is that it's still very wet behind the ears. The company produced only 1,015 EVs in 2021 and had its IPO with no trailing-12-month sales. It missed an already low production bar for 2021, and will likely deal with the same supply chain constraints affecting the entire industry. In other words, Rivian's trajectory is bound to hit numerous speed bumps and potholes. It's par for the course when building an EV company from the ground up.Making matters worse, Rivian finds itself in hot water with the public after announcing, then walking back (for those who ordered before March 1), a price hike of $12,000 on its quad-motor models. Higher material costs are forcing automakers to boost prices. While Rivian was simply following the pack, a $12,000 price hike on vehicles that already cost $70,000 (or more) didn't sit well with customers. If Rivian isn't careful, it could price customers out of buying its vehicles.While Rivian could eventually grow into an investment-worthy company in the EV space, it has little business being valued at $45 billion.The all-electric Nikola Badger got the ax before it even rolled off the production line. Image source: Nikola.The second EV stock to avoid: NikolaWell before Rivian was the hottest thing in the EV space, Nikola (NASDAQ:NKLA) was making waves. It was one of many companies that went public via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). On June 9, 2020, Nikola hit an intraday high of nearly $94 a share. Unfortunately, those same shares were trading hands for $7 and change as of March 3, 2022.The initial buzz for Nikola had to do with its introduction of the Badger in February 2020. The Badger was to be a battery EV (BEV) or fuel-cell EV (FCEV) pickup truck with an estimated 600-mile range and a reasonably low $60,000 price tag. When coupled with Nikola's ambitions to also build BEV and FCEV semi trucks, Wall Street was enamored, at least initially, with the company's potential. Then the proverbial wheels fell off.Over the course of the next year and a half, the Badger would be shelved before it even rolled off the production line. This was due, in part, to Nikola being unable to land a manufacturing partner for the truck. Though it looked as if General Motors would step up and be that partner, an eventual agreement between the two companies didn't include the Badger.Worse yet, a handful of allegations of wrongdoing levied by short-side firm Hindenburg Research against Nikola proved to be true. An independent review found that pre-order figures were exaggerated. This resulted in a probe by the Securities and Exchange Commission, leading to former CEO Trevor Milton being indicted on three counts of fraud this past July.Today, Nikola is only just beginning to deliver its first BEV semi trucks. Even though it's received a couple of letter-of-intent orders during the fourth quarter for its semi trucks, it's not clear if the company has the capital necessary to ramp up production and ward off significant quarterly losses. Image source: Nio.The EV stock to buy hand over fist: NioOn the other end of the spectrum is Nio (NYSE:NIO), which checks all the appropriate boxes and can be bought hand over fist following its recent pullback.I'll freely admit that, a little over a year ago, I had Nio in the same camp as Nikola -- i.e., Avoid! Avoid! Avoid! At one point, Nio's valuation topped $90 billion with the company pacing for only around 20,000 EVs in production annually. Its valuation just didn't make any sense.However, management has really impressed with its ability to boost production in a challenging environment. Though the Chinese New Year held back production in February, and supply chain issues curbed output in January, Nio managed to top 10,000 deliveries in both November and December. Management has offered guidance suggesting that the company can hit 50,000 deliveries monthly by the end of the year. This would work out to an annual run-rate of around 600,000 EVs.Fueling this production surge is Nio's existing line of EVs, as well as the introduction of three new vehicles. Until now, the company's premium SUVs (the ES8 and ES6) and crossover EV (the ES6) have received plenty of interest. But the next wave of growth will come from the deliveries of the ET7 and ET5, which are EV sedans that take direct aim at Tesla's Model S and Model 3, respectively. With the top-tier battery option, Nio claims an estimated range of approximately 621 miles for its sedans.Furthermore, the battery-as-a-service (BaaS) program that was unveiled in August 2020 by management is pure genius. For buyers, BaaS lowers the initial purchase price of their vehicle and gives them the option to charge, swap, or upgrade their batteries at a later date. For Nio, it trades lower-margin near-term sales for high-margin fee-based revenue (buyers pay a monthly fee for the BaaS program) that keeps buyers loyal to the brand.And did I mention Nio is based in China, the world's largest auto market? It's been a roadblock for certain individual investors who want to make a small initial investment. Amazon stock reached a high of more than $3,600 last year. And some investors prefer buying at least one full share or more of a company.The stock split -- considering today's price -- will take the price of each share down to about $150. If shareholders approve the plan during the annual meeting in May, the split will happen in early June. They knew he had made a big wager recently that prices would fall.</p>\n<p>But when he went to check his account on the online exchange Binance, he saw that the value of his leveraged bet against Ethereum was sinking rather than reaping gains a few times greater than the declines in the second-largest cryptocurrency.</p>\n<p>“I just kept blinking,” said the 59-year-old Canadian, who was left a paraplegic after a skiing accident. “I thought it was just a bug and they’d be fixing it.”</p>\n<p>By the end of May 19, Ethereum would plummet roughly 20% and Holland’s so-called down token tumbled about 85%. The value was so low it appeared as zero on price charts.</p>\n<p>In a way, it’s a cautionary tale as old as Wall Street -- retail speculators burned by byzantine derivatives -- amplified by a lack of regulation, croaky market plumbing and the extreme volatility of the $1.3 trillion crypto world.</p>\n<p>It’s hard to know exactly how much value was wiped out. But a growing band of disgruntled Binance users are now organizing to pressure -- with a combination of social media and legal threats -- the exchange to compensate their losses. Regulators have also taken notice, with Binance facing increasing scrutiny in Asia, North America and Europe.</p>\n<p>Holland’s records show from April to May 19 he put roughly $2,700 in the bearish tokens through a series of trades. Including his previous transactions, he estimates his investment totaled around $10,000.</p>\n<p>Leveraged tokens are pitched by crypto exchanges as an easy way for amateurs to make outsized bets without the hassle of managing collateral or margin requirements. On Binance, the product uses futures to offer long or short exposure to cryptocurrencies with a unique twist: A leverage ratio that floats between 1.25 and 4 times. That means, in theory, a 20% plunge in a coin should translate into between a 25% and 80% gain.</p>\n<p>The world’s largest crypto exchange touts the unpredictability as a feature, not a bug, to prevent front-running. But it’s also prompted traders to question how they are managed, especially during the manic swings that are also a feature of the market.</p>\n<p>Service Disruptions</p>\n<p>Holland’s experience was typical on May 19. Down tokens tied to the Litecoin and Tezos cryptocurrencies lost money despite betting on the right direction. Polkadot’s down token ended up worth less than three cents, plunging 95% from the prior day. At one point, both the tokens wagering on and against Ethereum were down roughly 75%.</p>\n<p>May 19 was a day of tumult overall, with crypto platforms including Binance and Coinbase suffering disruptions to regular trading after negative tweets from Elon Musk and tightening restrictions in China sent investors fleeing.</p>\n<p>As more traders wanted to cash out of bearish leveraged tokens, Binance said the outflows caused the leverage ratio to spike in some cases. When the program was forced to trim its short exposure in a rocky and illiquid market to lower the ratio again, it ended up losing money due to market conditions.</p>\n<p>In other words, the product was forced to keep cutting positions at the worst time. That day, the Ethereum down tokens rebalanced 21 times, the majority of which happened over half an hour.</p>\n<p>“We should note, nevertheless, that there were no identifiable issues or errors with the BLVT during the period,” a spokesman said in an email. “Binance users are informed in advance of the risks associated with any trading activities,” including through a training video and test of their understanding.</p>\n<p>In the depths of the selloff, the platform suspended trading for most leveraged tokens. It now no longer allows tokens to be subscribed or redeemed during rebalancing.</p>\n<p>The product is somewhat similar to leveraged exchange-traded funds, which typically rebalance at the end of each day to maintain a particular exposure. The difference is the Binance tokens only rebalance whenever the leverage ratio swings out of the 1.25-to-4-time range and based on a proprietary algorithm that determines the ratio.</p>\n<p>One problem with the absence of regular rebalancing is the product would naturally get more leveraged just as the market is moving against it, warns Tim Leung, a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Washington who’s written a book about leveraged ETFs.</p>\n<p>“It’s too opaque,” he said, commenting generally on a retail product structured this way. “An investor is looking at the historical leverage ratio and thinking it should be 2x, but there’s no guarantee the future leverage ratio is going to be two.”</p>\n<p>There’s little retail traders can do by way of regulatory recourse. Binance operates as a constellation of entities in multiple jurisdictions, and its terms say that any disputes need to go through individual arbitration in Hong Kong and cannot give rise to class-action claims.</p>\n<p>For Holland, it’s yet another blow to his long-time faith in cryptocurrencies. They knew he had made a big wager recently that prices would fall.\nBut when he went to check his account on the online exchange Binance, he saw that the value of his leveraged bet against Ethereum was sinking rather than reaping gains a few times greater than the declines in the second-largest cryptocurrency.\n“I just kept blinking,” said the 59-year-old Canadian, who was left a paraplegic after a skiing accident. “I thought it was just a bug and they’d be fixing it.”\nBy the end of May 19, Ethereum would plummet roughly 20% and Holland’s so-called down token tumbled about 85%. The value was so low it appeared as zero on price charts.\nIn a way, it’s a cautionary tale as old as Wall Street -- retail speculators burned by byzantine derivatives -- amplified by a lack of regulation, croaky market plumbing and the extreme volatility of the $1.3 trillion crypto world.\nIt’s hard to know exactly how much value was wiped out. But a growing band of disgruntled Binance users are now organizing to pressure -- with a combination of social media and legal threats -- the exchange to compensate their losses. Regulators have also taken notice, with Binance facing increasing scrutiny in Asia, North America and Europe.\nHolland’s records show from April to May 19 he put roughly $2,700 in the bearish tokens through a series of trades. Including his previous transactions, he estimates his investment totaled around $10,000.\nLeveraged tokens are pitched by crypto exchanges as an easy way for amateurs to make outsized bets without the hassle of managing collateral or margin requirements. On Binance, the product uses futures to offer long or short exposure to cryptocurrencies with a unique twist: A leverage ratio that floats between 1.25 and 4 times. That means, in theory, a 20% plunge in a coin should translate into between a 25% and 80% gain.\nThe world’s largest crypto exchange touts the unpredictability as a feature, not a bug, to prevent front-running. But it’s also prompted traders to question how they are managed, especially during the manic swings that are also a feature of the market.\nService Disruptions\nHolland’s experience was typical on May 19. Down tokens tied to the Litecoin and Tezos cryptocurrencies lost money despite betting on the right direction. Polkadot’s down token ended up worth less than three cents, plunging 95% from the prior day. At one point, both the tokens wagering on and against Ethereum were down roughly 75%.\nMay 19 was a day of tumult overall, with crypto platforms including Binance and Coinbase suffering disruptions to regular trading after negative tweets from Elon Musk and tightening restrictions in China sent investors fleeing.\nAs more traders wanted to cash out of bearish leveraged tokens, Binance said the outflows caused the leverage ratio to spike in some cases. When the program was forced to trim its short exposure in a rocky and illiquid market to lower the ratio again, it ended up losing money due to market conditions.\nIn other words, the product was forced to keep cutting positions at the worst time. That day, the Ethereum down tokens rebalanced 21 times, the majority of which happened over half an hour.\n“We should note, nevertheless, that there were no identifiable issues or errors with the BLVT during the period,” a spokesman said in an email. “Binance users are informed in advance of the risks associated with any trading activities,” including through a training video and test of their understanding.\nIn the depths of the selloff, the platform suspended trading for most leveraged tokens. It now no longer allows tokens to be subscribed or redeemed during rebalancing.\nThe product is somewhat similar to leveraged exchange-traded funds, which typically rebalance at the end of each day to maintain a particular exposure. The difference is the Binance tokens only rebalance whenever the leverage ratio swings out of the 1.25-to-4-time range and based on a proprietary algorithm that determines the ratio.\nOne problem with the absence of regular rebalancing is the product would naturally get more leveraged just as the market is moving against it, warns Tim Leung, a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Washington who’s written a book about leveraged ETFs.\n“It’s too opaque,” he said, commenting generally on a retail product structured this way. “An investor is looking at the historical leverage ratio and thinking it should be 2x, but there’s no guarantee the future leverage ratio is going to be two.”\nThere’s little retail traders can do by way of regulatory recourse. Binance operates as a constellation of entities in multiple jurisdictions, and its terms say that any disputes need to go through individual arbitration in Hong Kong and cannot give rise to class-action claims.\nFor Holland, it’s yet another blow to his long-time faith in cryptocurrencies.
