companies.\n
\n
The world of meme stocks is changing every day as traders communicating through Reddit's WallStreetBets channel and other social media set their sights on new targets for short squeezes or find other downtrodden companies to bid up in price.
\n
After last week's look at financial results and projections for the four BANG stocks and four other meme companies, what follows is the same treatment for six more.
\n
(The BANG stocks are BlackBerry Ltd. (BB.T), AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc $(AMC)$, Nokia Corp. (NOKIA.HE) and GameStop Corp. $(GME)$.)
\n
Short squeezes and meme stocks
\n
Traders looking to group together on social media to make quick killings by pushing up share prices of companies at early stages or those going through difficult times have been setting up short squeezes.
\n
Professional investors have traditionally short-sold shares of companies they believe will perform worse than most other investors or analysts expect. Shorting means borrowing a company's shares and selling them immediately, in the hope of buying them back at a lower price, returning them to the lender and pocketing the difference. If you simply buy a stock hoping it will go up, all you risk is the money you invest. You might get wiped out. But if you short a stock, your risk potential is unlimited. You never know how high the price might rise if you have gotten the trade wrong.
\n
\"Covering\" a short position is when you buy back the shares to return them to the investor who lent them to you. You are hoping to cover at a lower price than you sold the shares for, to make a profit.
\n
To have a short position, you need to have a margin account with a broker -- an account that lets you borrow to invest or trade. Because of the risk in taking a short position, if the share price goes against you (higher), your broker will keep increasing its collateral requirements. If you run out of cash as the price keeps rising, you will be forced to cover at a loss. That type of action among a large group of short-sellers pushes the price higher in a spiral -- a short squeeze.
\n
Six more meme stocks
\n
The action changes daily. On June 9, for example, shares of Clover Health Investments Corp. $(CLOV)$ fell 24% after rising 86% the day before. The stock is 36.6% sold short, according to FactSet.
\n
Read:Newest meme stock darling Clover Health is popping. Is the SEC watching?
\n
Here are the six additional meme stocks, following our initial group of eight , sorted by market capitalization as of the close on June 9:
\n

\n
Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR) provides a software platform used by government defense and intelligence agencies. It is the largest company on the list by market cap, but not by revenue, as you can see below. A year-to-date chart of its price performance shows how wild the meme-stock action can be:
\n

\n
Palantir's stock was up 3% for 2021 through June 9, but its market cap had increased by 26% because the company had been raising cash by selling additional shares to investors. The company's following as a meme stock seems to spring more from its growth prospects than from short interest, which peaked at 8.5% of shares available for sale, according to FactSet.
\n
Wendy's Co. $(WEN)$ is another meme stock whose addition to the group may be a bit confusing, as the stock isn't heavily shorted and the company is stable. Thornton McEnery dug into the action on June 8, which may have included confusion over Wendy's ticker symbol , when the stock rose 26%.
\n
ContextLogic Inc. (WISH) is one of two stocks on the new list that have fallen this year. The mobile e-commerce company's stock opened below its initial public offering price before the IPO.
\n
Short interest
\n
Keeping the group in the same order, here are levels of short interest as percentages of available shares and in dollars:
\n

\n
FactSet's data on short positions as a percentage of shares outstanding is updated twice a month. The data was updated overnight between June 9 and 10. The second update takes place around the 25th day of the month.
\n
Clover is the most heavily shorted stock on the list. Brad Lamensdorf, CEO of ActiveAlts in Westport, Conn., who runs long and short investment strategies, said previously that a short percentage \"over 30% to 40% is outrageously high.\" (Lamensdorf co-manages the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF (HDGE), which is meant to be used as a hedging tool.)
\n
A high percentage of shares sold short makes a stock especially dangerous for the short-sellers, because it can increase the intensity of any short squeeze.
\n
We have shown the short interest as a percentage of market cap in order to provide context. Tesla Inc. $(TSLA)$ is an excellent example to provide more context, because the company has such a large market capitalization of $576.8 billion. Only 5.16% of the shares are sold short, but that comes to $29.8 billion in short interest -- the most (in dollars) for any stock in the S&P 500. Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$ ranks second for dollars of short interest in the benchmark index, with 1.09% of shares sold short, which comes to $18.1 billion in short interest for a company with a market cap of $1.66 trillion.
\n
Canoo Inc. (GOEV) is the second-most heavily shorted stock listed above, at 29.5%. The electric-vehicle maker was formed on Dec. 21 through the merger of Canoo Holdings Ltd. and Hennessy Capital Acquisition Corp. IV, a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. Canoo expects to produce its first vehicle in mid-2022 in limited quantities, with \"serial production launching in 2023,\" according to its 10-K report filed on March 31.
\n
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. $(CLNE.AU)$ provides natural gas for use as an alternative to gasoline or diesel for fleets of vehicles. The stock is 6.58% sold-short, but has had a good run this year as the energy sector has recovered.
\n
Fundamentals
\n
We'll look back at sales results for this group of six meme stocks and then look ahead at sales estimates through 2023.
\n
\n
Looking back
\n
\n
First, here's a comparison of annual sales, in millions of dollars for the past five reported fiscal years (where available):
\n

\n
You can see clear growth paths in recent years for Palantir, Wendy's and ContextLogic, while Clean Energy Fuels had understandable challenges from lower natural gas prices in 2020.
\n
Clover was incorporated on Oct. 18, 2019. It hasn't yet reported annual revenue. For the first quarter, the company reported $200.3 million in sales, up from $165.5 million in the first quarter of 2020. Clover merged with Social Capital Hedosophia Holdings Corp. III (a SPAC) on Jan. 7.
\n
\n
Looking ahead -- sales
\n
\n
Starting from a baseline of calendar 2021, here are sales estimates going out through 2023 among Wall Street analysts polled by FactSet:
\n

\n
Double-digit or better sales growth is expected for all of the companies over the next two years except Wendy's. Price-to-sale ratios, based on closing share prices on June 9 and the 2023 estimates, are included. In comparison, the S&P 500 trades for 2.5 times its weighted aggregate consensus sales estimate for 2023.
\n
Looking ahead -- earnings
\n
Here are earnings-per-share estimates going out to 2023:
\n

\n
You might not have expected the EPS projections to be particularly useful, but they underscore how high these stocks are trading. The S&P 500 trades for 18.4 times its consensus EPS estimate for 2023.
\n
The estimates show expected improvement for Palantir, if it manages to maintain its rapid sales growth. Wendy's is expected to improve EPS significantly even with modest sale growth, in part because of stock buybacks .
\n
Wall Street's opinion
\n
Here's a summary of opinion for this group of meme stocks among Wall Street analysts:
\n

\n
So the Wall Street analysts have the most love for ContextLogic, with 82% \"buy\" or equivalent ratings. Second place goes to Clean Energy Fuels. For that company, the timing, in a year of economic and fuel-price recovery, not to mention the desire among many investors to help lower carbon emissions, seems perfect.
\n
Wall Street is skeptical of Palantir and Clover Health, but it would seem for different reasons, as Palantir already has a history of rapid sales growth.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
We put 6 more meme stocks' numbers to the test and the differences are telling
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWe put 6 more meme stocks' numbers to the test and the differences are telling\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2021-06-11 10:55
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n Digging deeper into the the meme stock phenomenon, there are big difference between Palantir, Wendy's, Canoo and other companies.\n
(BB.T), AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc $(AMC)$, Nokia Corp. (NOKIA.HE) and GameStop Corp. $(GME)$.)\nShort squeezes and meme stocks\nTraders looking to group together on social media to make quick killings by pushing up share prices of companies at early stages or those going through difficult times have been setting up short squeezes.\nProfessional investors have traditionally short-sold shares of companies they believe will perform worse than most other investors or analysts expect. You never know how high the price might rise if you have gotten the trade wrong.\n\"Covering\" a short position is when you buy back the shares to return them to the investor who lent them to you. You are hoping to cover at a lower price than you sold the shares for, to make a profit.\nTo have a short position, you need to have a margin account with a broker -- an account that lets you borrow to invest or trade. Because of the risk in taking a short position, if the share price goes against you (higher), your broker will keep increasing its collateral requirements. If you run out of cash as the price keeps rising, you will be forced to cover at a loss. That type of action among a large group of short-sellers pushes the price higher in a spiral -- a short squeeze.\nSix more meme stocks\nThe action changes daily. On June 9, for example, shares of Clover Health Investments Corp. $(CLOV)$ fell 24% after rising 86% the day before. The stock is 36.6% sold short, according to FactSet.\nRead:Newest meme stock darling Clover Health is popping. Is the SEC watching?\nHere are the six additional meme stocks, following our initial group of eight , sorted by market capitalization as of the close on June 9:\n\nPalantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR) provides a software platform used by government defense and intelligence agencies. It is the largest company on the list by market cap, but not by revenue, as you can see below. A year-to-date chart of its price performance shows how wild the meme-stock action can be:\n\nPalantir's stock was up 3% for 2021 through June 9, but its market cap had increased by 26% because the company had been raising cash by selling additional shares to investors. The company's following as a meme stock seems to spring more from its growth prospects than from short interest, which peaked at 8.5% of shares available for sale, according to FactSet.\nWendy's Co. $(WEN)$ is another meme stock whose addition to the group may be a bit confusing, as the stock isn't heavily shorted and the company is stable. Thornton McEnery dug into the action on June 8, which may have included confusion over Wendy's ticker symbol , when the stock rose 26%.\nContextLogic Inc. (WISH) is one of two stocks on the new list that have fallen this year. The mobile e-commerce company's stock opened below its initial public offering price before the IPO.\nShort interest\nKeeping the group in the same order, here are levels of short interest as percentages of available shares and in dollars:\n\nFactSet's data on short positions as a percentage of shares outstanding is updated twice a month. The data was updated overnight between June 9 and 10. The second update takes place around the 25th day of the month.\nClover is the most heavily shorted stock on the list. Brad Lamensdorf, CEO of ActiveAlts in Westport, Conn., who runs long and short investment strategies, said previously that a short percentage \"over 30% to 40% is outrageously high.\" (Lamensdorf co-manages the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF (HDGE), which is meant to be used as a hedging tool.)\nA high percentage of shares sold short makes a stock especially dangerous for the short-sellers, because it can increase the intensity of any short squeeze.\nWe have shown the short interest as a percentage of market cap in order to provide context. $(AMZN)$ ranks second for dollars of short interest in the benchmark index, with 1.09% of shares sold short, which comes to $18.1 billion in short interest for a company with a market cap of $1.66 trillion.\nCanoo Inc. Canoo expects to produce its first vehicle in mid-2022 in limited quantities, with \"serial production launching in 2023,\" according to its 10-K report filed on March 31.\nClean Energy Fuels Corp. $(CLNE.AU)$ provides natural gas for use as an alternative to gasoline or diesel for fleets of vehicles. The stock is 6.58% sold-short, but has had a good run this year as the energy sector has recovered.\nFundamentals\nWe'll look back at sales results for this group of six meme stocks and then look ahead at sales estimates through 2023.\n\nLooking back\n\nFirst, here's a comparison of annual sales, in millions of dollars for the past five reported fiscal years (where available):\n\nYou can see clear growth paths in recent years for Palantir, Wendy's and ContextLogic, while Clean Energy Fuels had understandable challenges from lower natural gas prices in 2020.\nClover was incorporated on Oct. 18, 2019. spending $2.3 billion for a new battery cell plant in Ohio.\nGM said it hopes “to have a decision on the potential project” by June.\n\nGeneral Motorsis looking at building a second plant in the U.S. to produce battery cells for electric vehicles through a joint venture withLG Chem.\nThe automaker confirmed the plans Thursday morning after theWall Street Journal reportedthe companies were close to a decision to locate the plant in Tennessee, but a final selection hadn’t been made. GM said it hopes “to have a decision on the potential project” by June.\nThrough their Ultium Cells LLC joint venture, GM and LG are currentlyspending $2.3 billionfor a new battery cell plant in Ohio. The plant is expected to be completed in 2022, allowing the automaker to lower costs and bring vehicles to market more quickly. The plant is considered a lynchpin to GM’s plans for its next-generation EVs to be profitable.\nGM is expected to release 20 new or redesigned EVs as part of its$27 billion investmentplan from 2020 through 2025.\nUltium is GM’snext-generation batteriesand platform, which is expected to debut later this year in the GMC Hummer EV pickup. The first vehicles are not expected to include Ultium battery cells from the plant that’s currently under construction.\nOutgoing GM Chief Sustainability Officer Dane Parker last year said the automaker would need to make more investment in battery production capacity. He said the increase would likely be a mix of new facilities and retrofitting existing plants.\n“We’re able to, in many cases, retrofit existing propulsion plants to do that,” he said during a Goldman Sachs conference in December. “In some cases, we’ll be building new ones.”\nAmid anongoing semiconductor chip shortagethat’s impacting vehicle production globally, there has been a growing interest in restructuring vehicle supply chains, specifically for higher tech components, including battery cells. The White House last week ordered a review of the U.S. battery supply chain.\n“We need to bring battery production to the U.S.,” Ford CEO Jim Farley said last month during a Wolfe Research conference. “We can’t go through what we’re doing with chips right now in Taiwan. It’s just important.”\nFord has not announced any plans for investing in U.S. battery production. By the time the closing bell rang, Airbnb stock ended up 6.7%.
\n
So what
\n
Just 24 hours remain before Airbnb reports its fiscal Q4 earnings -- tomorrow after close of trading. And while investors seem eager to see the results, they might not want to get their hopestoohigh up. According to analysts who follow the stock, Airbnb is probably going to report a loss of epic proportions -- as much as $9.16 per share, on sales of just under $748 million.
\n
Not everyone is in agreement on that.On Monday if you recall, analysts at Loop Capital predicted Airbnb will do better than those low expectations and upgraded the stock to a buy.
\n
Now what
\n
Even if Airbnb fails to \"beat earnings,\" though, there's still the potential for the stock to fly higher. Why?
\n
Well, consider: New reports of coronavirus infections are way down -- barely 71,000 reported yesterday, and only 56,000 the day before that. While those numbers both sound pretty big, they're mere fractions of the nearly 300,000 cases reported at the peak of the pandemic, Jan. 2.
\n
The Biden administration, meanwhile, is taking affirmative steps to drive those numbers even lower. By the time the closing bell rang, Airbnb stock ended up 6.7%.\nSo what\nJust 24 hours remain before Airbnb reports its fiscal Q4 earnings -- tomorrow after close of trading. And while investors seem eager to see the results, they might not want to get their hopestoohigh up. According to analysts who follow the stock, Airbnb is probably going to report a loss of epic proportions -- as much as $9.16 per share, on sales of just under $748 million.\nNot everyone is in agreement on that.On Monday if you recall, analysts at Loop Capital predicted Airbnb will do better than those low expectations and upgraded the stock to a buy.\nNow what\nEven if Airbnb fails to \"beat earnings,\" though, there's still the potential for the stock to fly higher. Why?\nWell, consider: New reports of coronavirus infections are way down -- barely 71,000 reported yesterday, and only 56,000 the day before that. While those numbers both sound pretty big, they're mere fractions of the nearly 300,000 cases reported at the peak of the pandemic, Jan. 2.\nThe Biden administration, meanwhile, is taking affirmative steps to drive those numbers even lower. On Wednesday, it was reported that the federal government is shipping out 25 million masks to workers in \"community health centers ... food pantries and soup kitchens,\" to help tamp down infections among the people most in need. And with vaccinations at the rate of 1.5 million a day -- accelerating toward 3 million per day by next month -- hopes are emerging that the pandemic and the recessionit caused could soon be put to bed, giving rise to an earlier-than-expected economic recovery.\nThe sooner that happens, the faster folks will resume traveling, taking vacations -- and booking rooms with Airbnb again. But the hearing suggested that was folly. In the end, it appears a lot of money changed hands in unforeseen, bizarre ways, but that there are no grand lessons, despite our great desire for them.
\n
At the hearing’s center was Vlad Tenev, the chief of the Robinhood. His app’s user-friendly interface and his initial belief in imposing few guardrails on its traders enabled an unprecedented surge in the share price of the video game retailer GameStop. Now trading around $40 per share, at one point, its price was as high as $483.
\n
While users of the Reddit forum WallStreetBets had been talking up GameStop for weeks before its stock skyrocketed, it grew into a cultural phenomenon only once a jaunty bunch of forum members painted themselves as the antagonists of the hedge funds that bet big money on GameStop plummeting (by “short-selling” the stock). Some technocrats had wondered if Reddit may have enabled a form of illegal stock manipulation. And so Steve Huffman, Reddit’s chief executive, was in attendance Thursday too.
\n
Then there was Keith Gill, known as Roaring Kitty on YouTube and Deep [Expletive] Value on Reddit. Mr. Gill, a recent MassMutual employee, whose longtime advocacy of GameStop and huge gains during the meme stock craze made him an icon, spoke bluntly about the company’s upsides and defended the integrity of publicly discussing his trades: “In short, I like the stock.” Mr. Huffman of Reddit also seemed sensible, explaining to lawmakers that Reddit’s forums are moderated by users themselves. After an internal investigation, Mr. Huffman said he saw no evidence of malign actors artificially generating excitement about GameStop or other companies that were buoyed by WallStreetBets.
\n
The financial heavyweights involved in the episode were called to the hearings as well: There was Gabe Plotkin of Melvin Capital, the hedge fund that took the most infamous losses by betting against GameStop. He was joined by Kenneth Griffin, the leader of Citadel. His company invested in Melvin Capital after its GameStop lossesandmakes money by executing trades on behalf of Robinhood (and some other retail brokers).
\n
It was this knotty set of entanglements that spurred bipartisan outrage and seeded conspiracy theories online — especially when Robinhood restricted purchases of GameStop and other meme stocks, with little explanation, fueling a crash in their share prices. In that void, many became suspicious that Citadel may have been illegally pulling strings to make money on both sides of the saga.
\n
But after the hearing, it became clear that the sinister theories lacked substance.
\n
Barring some bombshell revelation, it appears the hearing confirmed a more turgid underlying truth: The trading in GameStop and other meme stocks was so volatile that the clearinghouses — which are in charge of making sure money gets correctly exchanged between buyers and sellers —demanded billions in collateral from Robinhood and other retail brokerage platforms to ensure that the trades settled. So the brokerages had to hit pause.
\n
While financial commentators and regulators can and will argue about what if any regulations should be instituted going forward, it looks as if everybody played by the rules, as they stand.
\n
So did we really learn anything profound? The marketplace of opinions about the meme stock phenomenon has been as volatile as the trading itself: A series of hypotheses about populism, corruption, masculinity, inequality and price bubbles battled for primacy among those of us who watch cable news and consume think pieces.
\n
At the hearing, various members endorsed different theories. “Many Americans feel that the system is stacked against them, and no matter what, Wall Street always wins,” said the Financial Services Committee chairwoman, Maxine Waters, Democrat of California.
\n
The panel’s ranking Republican member, Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, suggested that the issue was less that of a game rigged against small-time investors and more the lack of productive assets for them to buy. “We created a world where it’s easier to buy a lottery ticket than it is to invest in the next Google,” he said. “Is it any wonder why the unhealthy dynamics of GameStop happened?”
\n
All in all, some hedge funds got pummeled, but briefly. Some unlucky retail investors got in on the fun too late, taking serious losses. And there were also plenty of life-changing profits taken by people far beyond the usual suspects. That’s a pretty muddied picture.
\n
The most meaningful thing to glean from all of this, according to Josh Brown, the chief executive of Ritholz Asset Management, may be a large incentive change for market behavior going forward: “I don’t think it’s in anyone’s best interest to be that visibly vocally ‘short’ on anything,” he told me. “I think that era has ended where there’s this automatic kneejerk reverence for a $5 billion hedge fund manager with a PowerPoint” pitching other investors on why they should bet against a company.
\n
Though shares in GameStop and fellow meme stock AMC have fallen far short of “the moon” where its boosters hoped it would land, both companies are, for now, trading above their most disastrous lows.
\n
And while Melvin Capital, the beleaguered hedge fund, finds itself fortunate and still in operation, any institution with a greedy “short” position on a thinly traded stock runs a major risk in this newly democratized financial market.
\n
“If it becomes a meme,” Mr. Brown said, “literally your fund could get closed.”
\n
Few will mourn the degradation of aggressive short-sellers; they’re the skunks at the picnic.

China is considering establishing a stock exchange to attract overseas-listed firms and bolster the global status of its onshore share markets, two people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The country's State Council has asked the top securities regulator to lead studies on how to design the exchange that would target Chinese firms listed in offshore markets such as Hong Kong and the United States, said the people.

The government hopes the initiative would also lure marquee global firms such as Apple Inc and Tesla Inc, which would have the option of carving out local businesses and listing them on the new bourse, one of the people said.

The plan comes as Beijing and Washington remain locked in a rivalry that has featured moves by the U.S. securities regulator toward expelling Chinese companies from U.S. exchanges if they do not comply with U.S. auditing standards.

About 13 U.S.-listed Chinese firms including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, Baidu Inc and JD.com Inc have conducted secondary listings worth a combined $36 billion in Hong Kong over the past 16 months, Refinitiv data showed.

With Sino-U.S. relations showing little sign of easing, bankers and investors expect more such \"homecoming\" offerings.

Talks for the new exchange are in early stages and a time frame and location are yet to be decided, said the people, who declined to be identified as the discussions are confidential.

The China Securities Regulatory Commission did not respond to a Reuters' request for comment.

China has two main onshore exchanges, in Shanghai and Shenzhen, with combined listed market capitalisation of 78.7 trillion yuan ($12 trillion).

The same rules govern initial public offerings as well as non-initial listings, in contrast to some other leading bourses, such as Hong Kong's, which offer waivers for secondary listings.

One option under discussion is upgrading an existing listing platform such as a smaller bourse in Beijing, said the people.

Beijing's municipal government has been lobbying for years to upgrade its equity exchange for small KONG (Reuters) - China is considering establishing a stock exchange to attract overseas-listed firms and bolster the global status of its onshore share markets, two people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The plan comes as Beijing and Washington remain locked in a rivalry that has featured moves by the U.S. securities regulator toward expelling Chinese companies from U.S. exchanges if they do not comply with U.S. auditing standards.About 13 U.S.-listed Chinese firms including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, Baidu Inc and JD.com Inc have conducted secondary listings worth a combined $36 billion in Hong Kong over the past 16 months, Refinitiv data showed. With Sino-U.S. relations showing little sign of easing, bankers and investors expect more such \"homecoming\" offerings.Talks for the new exchange are in early stages and a time frame and location are yet to be decided, said the people, who declined to be identified as the discussions are confidential. The China Securities Regulatory Commission did not respond to a Reuters' request for comment.China has two main onshore exchanges, in Shanghai and Shenzhen, with combined listed market capitalisation of 78.7 trillion yuan ($12 trillion). The same rules govern initial public offerings as well as non-initial listings, in contrast to some other leading bourses, such as Hong Kong's, which offer waivers for secondary listings. One option under discussion is upgrading an existing listing platform such as a smaller bourse in Beijing, said the people.Beijing's municipal government has been lobbying for years to upgrade its equity exchange for small and mid-sized firms, known as the \"New Third Board\", to be home to U.S.-listed Chinese firms, said one of the people and three other sources. The securities regulator and a few government bodies have for about six month been studying the feasibility of such an upgrade, for which there is a \"50-50\" chance of adoption, said one of the three sources. In a meeting with regulators and institutions in February, Cai Qi, head of Beijing city's Communist Party, called for the capital to lead financial reform and develop a modern financial industry, the official Beijing Daily reported. The Beijing government's media office did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment.($1 = 6.5623 Chinese to produce battery cells for electric vehicles through a joint venture withLG Chem.\nThe automaker confirmed the plans Thursday morning after theWall Street Journal reportedthe companies were close to a decision to locate the plant in Tennessee, but a final selection hadn’t been made. Most batteries currently are manufactured in Asia and Europe.Teslacurrently operates a massive battery and cell manufacturing facility with panasonic in Nevada.
But the hearing suggested that was folly. In the end, it appears a lot of money changed hands in unforeseen, bizarre ways, but that there are no grand lessons, despite our great desire for them.\nAt the hearing’s center was Vlad Tenev, the chief of the Robinhood. His app’s user-friendly interface and his initial belief in imposing few guardrails on its traders enabled an unprecedented surge in the share price of the video game retailer GameStop. Now trading around $40 per share, at one point, its price was as high as $483.\nWhile users of the Reddit forum WallStreetBets had been talking up GameStop for weeks before its stock skyrocketed, it grew into a cultural phenomenon only once a jaunty bunch of forum members painted themselves as the antagonists of the hedge funds that bet big money on GameStop plummeting (by “short-selling” the stock). Some technocrats had wondered if Reddit may have enabled a form of illegal stock manipulation. And so Steve Huffman, Reddit’s chief executive, was in attendance Thursday too.\nThen there was Keith Gill, known as Roaring Kitty on YouTube and Deep [Expletive] Value on Reddit. Huffman said he saw no evidence of malign actors artificially generating excitement about GameStop or other companies that were buoyed by WallStreetBets.\nThe financial heavyweights involved in the episode were called to the hearings as well: There was Gabe Plotkin of Melvin Capital, the hedge fund that took the most infamous losses by betting against GameStop. He was joined by Kenneth Griffin, the leader of Citadel. His company invested in Melvin Capital after its GameStop lossesandmakes money by executing trades on behalf of Robinhood (and some other retail brokers).\nIt was this knotty set of entanglements that spurred bipartisan outrage and seeded conspiracy theories online — especially when Robinhood restricted purchases of GameStop and other meme stocks, with little explanation, fueling a crash in their share prices. In that void, many became suspicious that Citadel may have been illegally pulling strings to make money on both sides of the saga.\nBut after the hearing, it became clear that the sinister theories lacked substance.\nBarring some bombshell revelation, it appears the hearing confirmed a more turgid underlying truth: The trading in GameStop and other meme stocks was so volatile that the clearinghouses — which are in charge of making sure money gets correctly exchanged between buyers and sellers —demanded billions in collateral from Robinhood and other retail brokerage platforms to ensure that the trades settled. So the brokerages had to hit pause.\nWhile financial commentators and regulators can and will argue about what if any regulations should be instituted going forward, it looks as if everybody played by the rules, as they stand.\nSo did we really learn anything profound? The marketplace of opinions about the meme stock phenomenon has been as volatile as the trading itself: A series of hypotheses about populism, corruption, masculinity, inequality and price bubbles battled for primacy among those of us who watch cable news and consume think pieces.\nAt the hearing, various members endorsed different theories. “Many Americans feel that the system is stacked against them, and no matter what, Wall Street always wins,” said the Financial Services Committee chairwoman, Maxine Waters, Democrat of California.\nThe panel’s ranking Republican member, Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, suggested that the issue was less that of a game rigged against small-time investors and more the lack of productive assets for them to buy. “We created a world where it’s easier to buy a lottery ticket than it is to invest in the next Google,” he said. “Is it any wonder why the unhealthy dynamics of GameStop happened?”\nAll in all, some hedge funds got pummeled, but briefly. Some unlucky retail investors got in on the fun too late, taking serious losses. And there were also plenty of life-changing profits taken by people far beyond the usual suspects. That’s a pretty muddied picture.\nThe most meaningful thing to glean from all of this, according to Josh Brown, the chief executive of Ritholz Asset Management, may be a large incentive change for market behavior going forward: “I don’t think it’s in anyone’s best interest to be that visibly vocally ‘short’ on anything,” he told me. “I think that era has ended where there’s this automatic kneejerk reverence for a $5 billion hedge fund manager with a PowerPoint” pitching other investors on why they should bet against a company.\nThough shares in GameStop and fellow meme stock AMC have fallen far short of “the moon” where its boosters hoped it would land, both companies are, for now, trading above their most disastrous lows.\nAnd while Melvin Capital, the beleaguered hedge fund, finds itself fortunate and still in operation, any institution with a greedy “short” position on a thinly traded stock runs a major risk in this newly democratized financial market.\n“If it becomes a meme,” Mr. Brown said, “literally your fund could get closed.”\nFew will mourn the degradation of aggressive short-sellers; they’re the skunks at the picnic. But it does raise the question of why regulators are eyeing new rules about their behavior. After all, the market — with meme stocks or not — may take care of them on its own.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":462,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":195394251,"gmtCreate":1621256147673,"gmtModify":1704354696514,"author":{"id":"3555277783682014","authorId":"3555277783682014","name":"XiaoJie","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/577c1d4a2a883c23c2072eaa97b912b4","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3555277783682014","authorIdStr":"3555277783682014"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good new","listText":"Good new","text":"Good new","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/195394251","repostId":"1162277361","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1162277361","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1621253925,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1162277361?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-17 20:18","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Toplines Before US Market Open on Monday","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1162277361","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Futures dip as focus turns to retail earningsDiscovery Inc. shares popped in premarket trading on a ","content":"

Futures dip as focus turns to retail earnings

Discovery Inc. shares popped in premarket trading on a deal tomergemedia assets with AT&T Inc.

U.S. equity futures slipped with most stocks on Monday as investors weighed risks to the outlook including inflation and a spike in Covid-19 cases in parts of the world.Investors shifting their focus to retail earnings this week for clues on the strength of consumer spending.

At 8:10 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 167 points, or 0.49%, S&P 500 e-minis were down 19.25 points, or 0.46%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were down 76.50 points, or 0.57%.

*Source From Tiger Trade, EST 08:10

Treasuries were little changed while gold climbed to thehighestin more than three months.
