value fund tracks the S&amp;P SmallCap 600 Value Index (SLYV), composed of stocks with the strongest value traits based on book value to price ratio, earnings to price ratio, and sales to price ratio. SLYV rallied 32% this year through Thursday's close.</p>\n<p>That more than doubles the return of its growth stock counterpart, SPDR S&amp;P 600 Small Cap Growth (SLYG), which is up 15%. The index SLYG tracks includes stocks with the strongest growth traits based on sales growth, earnings change to price and momentum.</p>\n<p>Back to SLYV, financials accounted for the biggest sector weight at 24% of assets. Industrials weighed in at about 17%, consumer discretionary 15% and real estate 10%. Information technology was next at 8% and materials, energy and health care, 6% each.&nbsp;Smaller positions in consumer staples, utilities and communication services made up the rest.</p>\n<p>SPDR S&amp;P 600 Small Cap Value is in IBD's ETF Leaders, but SPDR S&amp;P 600 Small Cap Growth is not.</p>\n<p><b>GameStop Stock Leads</b></p>\n<p><b>GameStop</b>(GME),<b>Macy's</b>(M),<b>PDC Energy</b>(PDCE),<b>Resideo Technologies</b>(REZI) and<b>BankUnited</b>(BKU) were the top five holdings as of Wednesday.</p>\n<p><b>Pacific Premier Bancorp</b>(PPBI),<b>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond</b>(BBBY),<b>Ameris Bancorp</b>(ABCB),<b>First Hawaiian</b>(FHB) and<b>Insight Enterprises</b>(NSIT) rounded out the top 10.</p>\n<p>GameStop has undergone wide swings this year. It rocketed about 2,500% early this year amid theshort-squeeze rallyfueled by the Reddit/WallStreetBets crowd.GME stockthen crashed 92% from a Jan. 28 high to its mid-February low. That was followed by an 805% surge the next three weeks, and a 66% drop over the next two weeks.</p>\n<p>Action had been relatively subdued since, until Thursday's 27% dive. Even after that, GameStop stock was up 1,070% year to date through Thursday's close.</p>\n<p>Could GME be inflating SLYV's performance? Certainly, given its quadruple-digit gain. But a look at SLYG's portfolio is interesting. GameStop stock is also the top holding in the growth stock ETF, though the rest of the top 10 differ vastly.</p>\n<p><b>Second Meme Stock In Top 10</b></p>\n<p>PDC Energy, up 130%, saw the next biggest gain in the top 10. The Colorado-based oil and gas explorer has a 97Relative Strength Rating, which mean it's in the top 3% of all stocks. Its relative strength line is at a 52-week high, a bullish sign.</p>\n<p>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, another meme stock, is up 78% this year. Shares surged more than 200% in January, amid a spate of wild double-digit swings. BBBY stock then gave back the bulk of its gains.</p>\n<p>But the home goods retailer appears to be back on the radar of the WallStreetBets discussion group. On June 2, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond soared 62% before diving 28% the next session.</p>\n<p>The rest of the top 10 stocks have also outperformed the broader market. Macy's is up 68% year to date, while Resideo, Pacific Premier and Ameris have risen more than 40% each. The lowest gainer, bank holding company First Hawaiian, has advanced 20%. SLYV rallied 32% this year through Thursday's close.\nThat more than doubles the return of its growth stock counterpart, SPDR S&P 600 Small Cap Growth (SLYG), which is up 15%. The index SLYG tracks includes stocks with the strongest growth traits based on sales growth, earnings change to price and momentum.\nBack to SLYV, financials accounted for the biggest sector weight at 24% of assets. Industrials weighed in at about 17%, consumer discretionary 15% and real estate 10%. Information technology was next at 8% and materials, energy and health care, 6% each. Smaller positions in consumer staples, utilities and communication services made up the rest.\nSPDR S&P 600 Small Cap Value is in IBD's ETF Leaders, but SPDR S&P 600 Small Cap Growth is not.\nGameStop Stock Leads\nGameStop(GME),Macy's(M),PDC Energy(PDCE),Resideo Technologies(REZI) andBankUnited(BKU) were the top five holdings as of Wednesday.\nPacific Premier Bancorp(PPBI),Bed Bath & Beyond(BBBY),Ameris Bancorp(ABCB),First Hawaiian(FHB) andInsight Enterprises(NSIT) rounded out the top 10.\nGameStop has undergone wide swings this year. It rocketed about 2,500% early this year amid theshort-squeeze rallyfueled by the Reddit/WallStreetBets crowd.GME stockthen crashed 92% from a Jan. 28 high to its mid-February low. That was followed by an 805% surge the next three weeks, and a 66% drop over the next two weeks.\nAction had been relatively subdued since, until Thursday's 27% dive. Even after that, GameStop stock was up 1,070% year to date through Thursday's close.\nCould GME be inflating SLYV's performance? Certainly, given its quadruple-digit gain. But a look at SLYG's portfolio is interesting. GameStop stock is also the top holding in the growth stock ETF, though the rest of the top 10 differ vastly.\nSecond Meme Stock In Top 10\nPDC Energy, up 130%, saw the next biggest gain in the top 10. The Colorado-based oil and gas explorer has a 97Relative Strength Rating, which mean it's in the top 3% of all stocks. Its relative strength line is at a 52-week high, a bullish sign.\nBed Bath & Beyond, another meme stock, is up 78% this year. Shares surged more than 200% in January, amid a spate of wild double-digit swings. BBBY stock then gave back the bulk of its gains.\nBut the home goods retailer appears to be back on the radar of the WallStreetBets discussion group. On June 2, Bed Bath & Beyond soared 62% before diving 28% the next session.\nThe rest of the top 10 stocks have also outperformed the broader market. Over the trailing year, 910 stocks with a market cap of at least $300 million have doubled in value, with 62 of those stocks up by more than 500%.</p>\n<p>While it's great to see the U.S. economy getting back on track, some of the most popular stocks investors are buying are downright awful businesses. Even with things looking up for the market as a whole, the following five ultra-popular stocks should be avoided like the plague in June.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b2e6f5c48ac79126a7c69a95b9659ed\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"484\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>AMC Entertainment</h2>\n<p>There's absolutely no question that the No. 1 stock to avoid like the plague in June is movie theater chain <b>AMC Entertainment</b> (NYSE:AMC). It's far and away the most disassociated stock from its underlying business.</p>\n<p>As most folks probably know by now, retail traders from Reddit, <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWTR\">Twitter</a></b>, and other social media platforms have banded together to buy shares and call options in AMC, which is a fairly heavily short-sold stock. Their goal being to effect a short squeeze -- i.e., an event where pessimists (short-sellers) feel trapped in their positions and run for the exit at once. Short squeezes are very short-term events and they have a very poor track record of success.</p>\n<p>While I have a laundry list of issues with the basis for this trade, perhaps the single biggest is that retail traders are willingly ignoring AMC's dumpster fire of an income statement and balance sheet. This is a company that almost certainly won't be capable of paying back its debts when they come due by or before 2026. It's also now been hamstrung by the same retail investors who claimed to want to \"save AMC.\" That's because AMC has maxed out how many shares it's authorized to issue, and can therefore not take advantage of higher prices with a capital raise. The May proxy vote would have allowed AMC to take advantage of this recent spike, but shortsightedness from retail traders killed that idea.</p>\n<p>The AMC bull thesis is also built on a monument of misinformation. For example, retail traders believe hedge funds can bankrupt companies, when it's the operating performance and actions of businesses that determine whether or not they succeed or fail.</p>\n<p>Suffice it to say, the willful ignorance of concrete data in AMC's income statements and balance sheets will come back to haunt these traders.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b574bce2f4c87731881bf278bde1070\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Marathon Digital Holdings</h2>\n<p>June would also be a very good time to say goodbye to a number <b>Bitcoin</b> (CRYPTO:BTC) stocks. Cryptocurrency miner <b>Marathon Digital Holdings</b> (NASDAQ:MARA) may well top that list.</p>\n<p>As I've been previously stated, I'm not a fan of Bitcoin. Although it's the largest digital currency in the world by market value, it's been stuck at handling a meager 300,000 transactions daily for more than a year and is accepted by approximately 15,200 businesses worldwide. That's nothing when you consider that there an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs around the globe.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin is also prone to long-winded downtrends. Over the past decade, the top cryptocurrency has lost at least 80% of its value on three separate occasions. That's bad news for Marathon for two key reasons. First, Marathon Digital mines Bitcoin, and is therefore reliant on higher prices to increase its revenue. While still up slightly on its investment, a protracted move lower in Bitcoin threatens to wipe out a good chunk of Marathon Digital's assets.</p>\n<p>I've said it before and I'll say it again: Crypto mining stocks are the worst way to invest in Bitcoin.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/084d89ada48e3614d1b0f7ca9fd0aa9c\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Sundial Growers</h2>\n<p>Following its late-May rally, <b>Sundial Growers</b> (NASDAQ:SNDL) has once more emerged as the top marijuana stock to avoid, as well as <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the worst stocks to buy, as a whole.</p>\n<p>While marijuana is an intriguing place to put your money to work over the next five to 10 years, Canadian pot stock Sundial has consistently underperformed its peers and done nothing to build shareholder value.</p>\n<p>In an effort to rid its balance sheet of debt, the company's management team began selling stock in October 2020... and it just hasn't stopped. Sundial has built up a cash hoard of 1.08 billion Canadian (about $894 million U.S.), but has done so by issuing more than 1.35 billion shares of stock in eight months. As of May 7, the company had 1.86 billion shares outstanding -- and this figure is likely to go higher with an $800 million at-the-market share offering approved earlier this year. Sundial is building up cash with no particular purpose in mind and drowning its shareholders in the process.</p>\n<p>With 1.86 billion shares outstanding, Sundial has virtually no chance of ever producing meaningful earnings per share, and it may not be able to get back above $1 per share on a consistent basis. It'll likely have to follow in the footsteps of serial diluter <b>Aurora Cannabis</b>&nbsp;and reverse split to get its share price to a respectable level.</p>\n<p>As the icing on the cake, legal pot sales in Canada have grown significantly, while Sundial's marijuana sales have been slashed by a double-digit percentage. A company that consistently has a very low share price probably has an untested operating model, is losing money, and isn't creating value for its shareholders. This pretty much sums up <b>Castor Maritime </b>(NASDAQ:CTRM).</p>\n<p>On paper, the operating model doesn't sound awful. Castor buys vessels capable of transporting dry bulk goods, such as grains, fertilizer, sugar, and steel. If the U.S. and global economy are rebounding from their pandemic lows, demand for dry bulk goods and daily charter rates should increase over time. Pretty straightforward, right?</p>\n<p>The problem is that Castor Maritime didn't have the fleet or the finances to take advantage of this rebound. To compensate, it's been selling shares of its stock like it's going out of style to raise capital to buy new vessels. Castor ended 2020 with six ships but it now owns 26, when all are fully delivered. But it's the company's shareholders who paid the price for this shopping spree. Castor's share count has risen from 3.3 million shares on Dec. 31, 2019 to about 900 million (both figures are pre-split).</p>\n<p>However, last month the company had to enact a 1-for-10 reverse split to simply remain listed on the <b>Nasdaq</b>&nbsp;exchange. Issuing so many shares pushed Castor's share price below $0.40, and a $1 minimum share price is required for continued listing.</p>\n<p>We've witnessed this same dilute and reverse-split story time and again in the shipping space. GameStop had a larger percentage of its float held short than any other publicly traded company in January. This made it the ideal candidate for a short squeeze. Unfortunately, it's also spurred retail investors to now hone in on short interest data and absolutely nothing else about the companies they're buying.</p>\n<p>To be clear, GameStop is a much, <i>much</i> better and more financially sound company than AMC. A recent share offering helped raise $551 million in gross proceeds, which means GameStop has wiped out its debt and has more than enough cash to move forward with its digital transformation. In fact, all of these avoidable stocks are likely OK on the liquidity front for the next three to five years... except AMC.</p>\n<p>Where GameStop gets into trouble is if you dig into its operating performance. It's always been a brick-and-mortar-focused company. This worked well for two decades, but is problematic now that gaming has gone digital. Even with e-commerce sales up 191% last year, GameStop's total sales declined by more than 21%. In short, sales will be stagnant for years as the company shutters physical locations and invests in digital initiatives. It's far and away the most disassociated stock from its underlying business.\nAs most folks probably know by now, retail traders from Reddit, Twitter, and other social media platforms have banded together to buy shares and call options in AMC, which is a fairly heavily short-sold stock. Their goal being to effect a short squeeze -- i.e., an event where pessimists (short-sellers) feel trapped in their positions and run for the exit at once. Short squeezes are very short-term events and they have a very poor track record of success.\nWhile I have a laundry list of issues with the basis for this trade, perhaps the single biggest is that retail traders are willingly ignoring AMC's dumpster fire of an income statement and balance sheet. This is a company that almost certainly won't be capable of paying back its debts when they come due by or before 2026. It's also now been hamstrung by the same retail investors who claimed to want to \"save AMC.\" That's because AMC has maxed out how many shares it's authorized to issue, and can therefore not take advantage of higher prices with a capital raise. The May proxy vote would have allowed AMC to take advantage of this recent spike, but shortsightedness from retail traders killed that idea.\nThe AMC bull thesis is also built on a monument of misinformation. For example, retail traders believe hedge funds can bankrupt companies, when it's the operating performance and actions of businesses that determine whether or not they succeed or fail.\nSuffice it to say, the willful ignorance of concrete data in AMC's income statements and balance sheets will come back to haunt these traders.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nMarathon Digital Holdings\nJune would also be a very good time to say goodbye to a number Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) stocks. Although it's the largest digital currency in the world by market value, it's been stuck at handling a meager 300,000 transactions daily for more than a year and is accepted by approximately 15,200 businesses worldwide. That's nothing when you consider that there an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs around the globe.\nBitcoin is also prone to long-winded downtrends. Over the past decade, the top cryptocurrency has lost at least 80% of its value on three separate occasions. That's bad news for Marathon for two key reasons. First, Marathon Digital mines Bitcoin, and is therefore reliant on higher prices to increase its revenue. All 10 of millennials' top performing stocks in 2021 so far, including consumer discretionary play <b>GameStop</b>, health care company <b>Ocugen</b> and communications services firm <b>AMC Entertainment</b>, are brand new holdings for them this year, too.</p>\n<p>Not <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of these runaway winners was among the top 100 holdings of millennial investors in the fourth quarter, says an Investor's Business Daily analysis of just-released holdings data from Apex Clearing and market data from MarketSmith and S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence. The analysis studies U.S.-based accounts of more than 3 million millennials. The group's average age is 32. And their portfolio is valued at an average of $2,900, up 15% in the quarter. All these winners are up 100% or more this year.</p>\n<p>Many of millennials' top holdings are off-the-charts in terms of speculative fever. That includes \"meme stocks\" popularized online, plus penny stocks and special purpose acquisition companies, causing some more experienced investors to shake their heads.</p>\n<p>\"Younger investors have recently experienced a lot of volatility — not just in the markets, but in general society — and appear to be willing to experiment and take risks,\" said Apex President Tricia Rothschild. \"We see them investing in technologies and things like crypto, that are far more about the future than they may be about the past.\"</p>\n<h2>\"Meme\" Stocks Win Over Millennials</h2>\n<p>Don't go looking for well-worn S&amp;P 500 stocks like <b>Nike</b>, <b>McDonald's</b> and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MMM\">3M</a></b> among millennials' top holdings. All those dropped off their top 100 most popular stocks in the first quarter, Apex says.</p>\n<p>Instead, millennials went all-in on Meme stocks. These are lesser known stocks like retailer GameStop and AMC. All these jumped in value in early 2021 amid a massive short squeeze. The squeeze is fading now, and it's not working in April anymore. GameStop is down roughly 20% in the past month.</p>\n<p>But millennials that got in early are up huge. GameStop was millennials' No. 5 most popular stock in the first quarter. And despite the stock's weakness in April, it's still up nearly 700% this year so far, to 150.48. That makes it Millennials' top stocks this year so far. Should you buy GameStop stock now?</p>\n<p>Similarly, theater chain AMC is the No. 7 most popular holding with millennials. It wasn't even in the top 100 in the fourth quarter. That stock, too, is down 20% in the past month. But by getting in early, millennials are holding a stock up more than 370% this year. Not bad.</p>\n<h2>Penny Stocks Catch On</h2>\n<p>Millennials are still shooting for huge wins, including in stocks with tiny share prices.</p>\n<p>It's not a suggested strategy, but was working in the first quarter. Four of Millennials' top 10 performing stocks trade for 5 or less a share.</p>\n<p>Health care <b>Zomedica</b>, millennials' No. 22 stock, is up 303% this year to 93 cents a share. Technology play <b>SOS</b>, landing as the No. 54 most popular millennial stock, is up 181% to 4.16. Another health care stock, <b>Senseonics</b>, is up 125% to 1.96. And millennials' No. 39 top holding, industrial <b>Castor Maritime</b>, is up 162% to 48 cents.</p>\n<h2>\"Back To Work\" Trade Takes A Break</h2>\n<p>Millennials were early (and wise) to jump on shares of companies poised to ride the economy's reopening. But they're cooling off on this theme now.</p>\n<p>Vaccine pioneer <b>Moderna</b> dropped to millennials' No. 48 most popular holding. That's down from No. 27 in the fourth quarter. The stock, though, is still up 62% this year so far. Similarly, <b>Pfizer</b> fell 24 spots of popularity with millennials to No. 44.</p>\n<p>Travel stocks millennials loved last year, like <b>United Airlines</b>, <b>Delta Air Lines</b> and <b>Royal Caribbean Cruises</b> also fell slightly in popularity in the first quarter. Many of these stocks are also cooling off in terms of stocks gains, too. Delta fell to millennials' No. 29 holding, down from 22 in 2020. The stock is up 11% this year, only marginally topping the S&amp;P 500's 10.1% year-to-date gain. Should you buy Delta now?</p>\n<h2>Don't Shame Millennials</h2>\n<p>It's easy to suggest millennials are simply chasing after hot stocks with no basis in reality. But that's not really true, says Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.</p>\n<p>For one thing, all three of millennials' very most popular stocks are all S&amp;P 500 mainstream holdings: <b>Tesla</b>, <b>Apple</b> and <b>Amazon.com</b>. These holdings aren't big winners this year. But they are steady. They were also millennials' top one, two and three holdings at the end of 2020.</p>\n<p>And yes, it's true some of the top speculative plays may not end well. Many analysts, for instance, say GameStop shares are grossly overvalued. Not a single one of millennials' top performing stocks has an IBD Composite Rating over 80. That means they're not true leaders.</p>\n<p>But it's no different than how other generations made early mistakes in investing, too (such as buying overpriced mutual funds in the 1980s). Lessons learned made them all the wiser when they aged and had larger portfolios, Colas says.</p>\n<p>And such big stock gains show millennials are willing to stick with the job of investing their own money. The analysis studies U.S.-based accounts of more than 3 million millennials. The group's average age is 32. And their portfolio is valued at an average of $2,900, up 15% in the quarter. And despite the stock's weakness in April, it's still up nearly 700% this year so far, to 150.48. That makes it Millennials' top stocks this year so far. Should you buy GameStop stock now?</p>\n<p>Similarly, theater chain AMC is the No. 7 most popular holding with millennials. It wasn't even in the top 100 in the fourth quarter. That stock, too, is down 20% in the past month. But by getting in early, millennials are holding a stock up more than 370% this year. Not bad.</p>\n<h2>Penny Stocks Catch On</h2>\n<p>Millennials are still shooting for huge wins, including in stocks with tiny share prices.</p>\n<p>It's not a suggested strategy, but was working in the first quarter. Four of Millennials' top 10 performing stocks trade for 5 or less a share.</p>\n<p>Health care <b>Zomedica</b>, millennials' No. 22 stock, is up 303% this year to 93 cents a share. Technology play <b>SOS</b>, landing as the No. 54 most popular millennial stock, is up 181% to 4.16. Another health care stock, <b>Senseonics</b>, is up 125% to 1.96. And millennials' No. 39 top holding, industrial <b>Castor Maritime</b>, is up 162% to 48 cents.</p>\n<h2>\"Back To Work\" Trade Takes A Break</h2>\n<p>Millennials were early (and wise) to jump on shares of companies poised to ride the economy's reopening. But they're cooling off on this theme now.</p>\n<p>Vaccine pioneer <b>Moderna</b> dropped to millennials' No. 48 most popular holding. That's down from No. 27 in the fourth quarter. The stock, though, is still up 62% this year so far. Similarly, <b>Pfizer</b> fell 24 spots of popularity with millennials to No. 44.</p>\n<p>Travel stocks millennials loved last year, like <b>United Airlines</b>, <b>Delta Air Lines</b> and <b>Royal Caribbean Cruises</b> also fell slightly in popularity in the first quarter. Many of these stocks are also cooling off in terms of stocks gains, too. Delta fell to millennials' No. 29 holding, down from 22 in 2020. The stock is up 11% this year, only marginally topping the S&amp;P 500's 10.1% year-to-date gain. Should you buy Delta now?</p>\n<h2>Don't Shame Millennials</h2>\n<p>It's easy to suggest millennials are simply chasing after hot stocks with no basis in reality. But that's not really true, says Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.</p>\n<p>For one thing, all three of millennials' very most popular stocks are all S&amp;P 500 mainstream holdings: <b>Tesla</b>, <b>Apple</b> and <b>Amazon.com</b>. These holdings aren't big winners this year. But they are steady. They were also millennials' top one, two and three holdings at the end of 2020.</p>\n<p>And yes, it's true some of the top speculative plays may not end well. Many analysts, for instance, say GameStop shares are grossly overvalued. Not a single one of millennials' top performing stocks has an IBD Composite Rating over 80. That means they're not true leaders.</p>\n<p>But it's no different than how other generations made early mistakes in investing, too (such as buying overpriced mutual funds in the 1980s). Lessons learned made them all the wiser when they aged and had larger portfolios, Colas says.</p>\n<p>And such big stock gains show millennials are willing to stick with the job of investing their own money. (Also, being in space is Bezos' lifelong dream.)</p>\n<p>Still, what Bezos, his brother Mark Bezos, and the winner of an online auction, will be doing -- going on the very first crewed flight of New Shepard, a fully autonomous suborbital rocket and spacecraft system designed to take ticket holders on brief joy rides to space -- is not entirely without risk.</p>\n<p>Here's what Bezos' flight will look like and the extent to which people are taking their lives in their hands when they go to outer space these days.</p>\n<p><b>What the flight looks like</b></p>\n<p>When most people think about spaceflight, they think about an astronaut circling the Earth, floating in space, for at least a few days.</p>\n<p>That is not what the Bezos brothers and their fellow passengers will be doing .</p>\n<p>They'll be going up and coming right back down, and they'll be doing it in less time -- about 11 minutes -- than it takes most people to get to work.</p>\n<p>Suborbital flights differ greatly from orbital flights of the type most of us think of when we think of spaceflight. Blue Origin's New Shepard flights will be brief, up-and-down trips, though they will go more than 62 miles above Earth, which is widely considered to be the edge of outer space.</p>\n<p>Orbital rockets need to drum up enough power to hit at least 17,000 miles per hour, or what's known as orbital velocity, essentially giving a spacecraft enough energy to continue whipping around the Earth rather than being dragged immediately back down by gravity.</p>\n<p>Suborbital flights require far less power and speed. That means less time the rocket is required to burn, lower temperatures scorching the outside of the spacecraft, less force and compression ripping at the spacecraft, and generally fewer opportunities for something to go very wrong.</p>\n<p>New Shepard's suborbital fights hit about about three times the speed of sound — roughly 2,300 miles per hour — and fly directly upward until the rocket expends most of its fuel. The crew capsule will then separate from the rocket at the top of the trajectory and briefly continue upward before the capsule almost hovers at the top of its flight path, giving the passengers a few minutes of weightlessness. It works sort of like an extended version of the weightlessness you experience when you reach the peak of a roller coaster hill, just before gravity brings your cart — or, in Bezos' case, your space capsule -- screaming back down toward the ground.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1aeef7cd6efed45b4f08991c7c4b7be4\" tg-width=\"780\" tg-height=\"438\"></p>\n<p>The New Shepard capsule then deploys a large plume of parachutes to slow its descent to less than 20 miles per hour before it hits the ground.</p>\n<p>The rocket, flying separately, re-ignites its engines and uses its on-board computers to execute a pinpoint, upright landing. The booster landing looks similar to what SpaceX does with its Falcon 9 rockets, though those rockets are far more powerful than New Shepard and — yes — more prone to exploding on impact.</p>\n<p><b>How big are the risks?</b></p>\n<p>Blue Origin's New Shepard capsule, which is fully autonomous and does not require a pilot, has never had an explosive mishap in 15 test flights. And the nature of Bezos' flight means it comes with some inherently lower risks than more ambitious space travel attempts. But that doesn't mean the risk is zero, either.</p>\n<p>Because suborbital flights don't require as much speed or the intense process of trying to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere at incredible speeds, they're considered much less risky than orbital flights. With an orbital re-entry, a spacecraft's external temperatures can reach up to 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit, and astronauts can experience 4.5 Gs of force that is also placed upon the spacecraft, all while the ever-thickening atmosphere whips around the capsule.</p>\n<p>High speeds and high altitudes come with inherent risks, and even small errors can have big consequences. Earth's atmosphere is generally not considered survivable for significant amounts of time above altitudes of 50,000 feet without a spacesuit, and Bezos will be traveling up to 350,000 feet. But the capsule he travels in will be pressurized, so he doesn't need a special suit to keep him safe, and he'll have access to an oxygen mask if the cabin loses pressure. The spacecraft is also equipped with an abort system designed to jettison the New Shepard capsule and passengers away from the rocket in case of emergency.
