Expect a blowout.
\n
For the June quarter, the tech giant has projected sales of $110 billion to $116 billion, with operating income in the $4.5 billion-to-$8 billion range. Wall Street consensus calls for sales of $115.4 billion, operating income of $7.8 billion, and earnings of $12.28 a share.
\n
There are several reasons why the Street numbers might be too low.
\n
For one, Amazon (ticker: AMZN) has beat expectations in every quarter since the start of the pandemic—in fact, for 10 quarters in a row.
\n
Another is that Amazon’s competitors have already reported solid numbers.Shopify(SHOP), arguably one of the company’s most important rivals in e-commerce,posted better-than-expected results for the June quarter, noting that sustained digital commerce trends and U.S. stimulus checks in March and April drove revenues above expectations. Strong reports from Alphabet,Snap and Twitter suggest Amazon will post accelerating growth in its underappreciated advertising business. And the strength in the cloud business at Microsoft bodes well for Amazon Web Services.
\n
Street estimates call for Amazon to post $57.3 billion in online sales, up 25%; $24.8 billion in third-party sellers services, up 36%; $14.3 billion from AWS, up 32%; $7.9 billion in subscription services, up 36%; $7 billion in “other” revenue, which is mostly advertising, up 66%; and $3.9 billion in physical stores revenue, up 3%.
\n
Plus, there are a couple of other factors at play. This will be the first quarter for Amazon since Jeff Bezos turned over the CEO reins to Andy Jassy. Bezos didn’t typically participate in the company’s quarterly earnings calls with analysts, leaving that job to CFO Brian OIsavky; it remains to be seen if Jassy will make an appearance this year. Also, Amazon finds itself at the heart of the debate—in Washington and elsewhere—over the power of tech companies, and now faces an in-depth investigation by the Federal Trade Commission over its proposed acquisition of the film studio MGM.Amazon has requested that FTC Chair Lina Khan recuse herself from any matters involving Amazon given her past criticisms of the company.
\n

\n
Investors also will be watching for clues on how the company expects the pandemic and a return to a more normal economy will impact results for the rest of the year. Street estimates for the September quarter call for revenue of $118.6 billion and profits of $12.97 a share.
\n
In a research note, MKM Partners analyst Rohit Kulkarni points out that Amazon has underperformed both Alphabet and Facebook shares this year. He thinks the stock has been weighed down by ongoing debate about the true strength of this year’s Prime Day sales event, as well as ongoing questions about the outlook for e-commerce as supplemental U.S. unemployment benefits lapse in September. Nonetheless, Kulkarni thinks that advertising, Amazon Prime subscriptions, and AWS will together drive upside to both second-quarter results and guidance, and he continues to consider Amazon his best pick among the big internet stocks. Kulkarni keeps his Buy rating and $4,075 target price.
\n
Evercore ISI analyst Mark Mahaney maintains an Outperform rating and $4,500 target price. He thinks Street estimates for the second quarter “look largely reasonable,” although he has some concerns that the Street might be too bullish on the third quarter, in particular given Prime Day this year shifted into the second quarter.
\n
Monness Crespi White analyst Brian White notes that Amazon shares have been “range bound” over the past few months, but he thinks the company is “uniquely positioned” to exit the pandemic as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the digital transformation trend. White asserts that “the company’s growth path is very attractive across the e-commerce segment, AWS, digital media, advertising, Alexa and more.” White maintains his Buy rating and $4,500 target price.
\n
On Wednesday, Amazon shares were up 0.1%, to $3,630.32.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Amazon Reports Earnings Thursday. Many blank-cheque companies have turned to Asia to seek takeover targets.

The concept isn't new to the Singapore exchange. It had initiated a consultation on SPAC listings in 2010 - but there wasn't enough appetite among businesses and investors back then.

\"The world has changed, capital markets have evolved since then,\" said Mr Loh, who took over as CEO in 2015 after a long career in banking. He added that lower-for-longer interest rates, shorter business cycles, volatile markets and stimulus measures are heightening the need for and the ability to seek capital. SPACs could facilitate that while minimising market risk exposure by providing another avenue for investment, he said.

SPACs could be a way to revive investor interest in Singapore's stock market. The bourse has struggled to attract big-ticket IPOs over the past few years particularly in hot sectors such as technology. While the market volatility of 2020 was a boon, the value of shares traded remained below its five-year average.

SGX expects stock market listings this year in various sectors including technology, he said, as it awaits the mega IPO of Thai Beverage's brewery unit. The amount raised in first-time share sales in the city-state slumped to US$914 million last year from US$3.4 billion in 2017, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
","source":"lsy1584095487587","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Many blank-cheque companies have turned to Asia to seek takeover targets. The concept isn't new to the Singapore exchange. It had initiated a consultation on SPAC listings in 2010 - but there wasn't enough appetite among businesses and investors back then.\"The world has changed, capital markets have evolved since then,\" said Mr Loh, who took over as CEO in 2015 after a long career in banking. He added that lower-for-longer interest rates, shorter business cycles, volatile markets and stimulus measures are heightening the need for and the ability to seek capital. SPACs could facilitate that while minimising market risk exposure by providing another avenue for investment, he said.SPACs could be a way to revive investor interest in Singapore's stock market. The bourse has struggled to attract big-ticket IPOs over the past few years particularly in hot sectors such as technology. While the market volatility of 2020 was a boon, the value of shares traded remained below its five-year average.SGX expects stock market listings this year in various sectors including technology, he said, as it awaits the mega IPO of Thai Beverage's brewery unit. The amount raised in first-time share sales in the city-state slumped to US$914 million last year from US$3.4 billion in 2017, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":133,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":801110681,"gmtCreate":1627487014543,"gmtModify":1703491022413,"author":{"id":"3555414544558416","authorId":"3555414544558416","name":"车厘子tomato","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a6dbabc7e37fc0d611c52a5194f61d58","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"like n comment for me!!! for green day!!!???????","listText":"like n comment for me!!! for green day!!!???????","text":"like n comment for me!!! for green day!!!???????","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/801110681","repostId":"1179923360","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":421,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":809864087,"gmtCreate":1627358862149,"gmtModify":1703488338061,"author":{"id":"3555414544558416","authorId":"3555414544558416","name":"车厘子tomato","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a6dbabc7e37fc0d611c52a5194f61d58","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"like n comment","listText":"like n comment","text":"like n comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/809864087","repostId":"2154964378","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":439,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":808609826,"gmtCreate":1627571335265,"gmtModify":1703492681123,"author":{"id":"3555414544558416","authorId":"3555414544558416","name":"车厘子tomato","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a6dbabc7e37fc0d611c52a5194f61d58","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"like n comment","listText":"like n comment","text":"like n comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/808609826","repostId":"1165497040","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1165497040","pubTimestamp":1627542522,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1165497040?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-29 15:08","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Amazon Reports Earnings Thursday.

Behind the scenes, the 90-year oldbillionaire was hardly inactive.

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. was firing up another engine: stocks -- both buying its own and trading others. The conglomerate snapped up $24.7 billion of Berkshire shares last year, a stark record for the business sitting atop a $138 billion cash pile. It also almost doubled the volume of buying and selling of other stocks compared to 2019.

The moves signal a carefully forged path in markets sent convulsing by the pandemic and then lifted by stimulus that’s paved the way for heavy retail trading and an unprecedented SPAC boom. And Buffett is sticking close to home -- ultimately becoming a net seller of shares in other companies for the first time since 2016, while his prolific repurchases of Berkshire stock continued into this year with at least $4.2 billion of buybacks through mid-February, according to a regulatory filing Saturday.

“Last year we demonstrated our enthusiasm for Berkshire’s spread of properties by repurchasing the equivalent of 80,998 ‘A’ shares,” Buffett said in the letter released Saturday. “That action increased your ownership in all of Berkshire’s businesses by 5.2% without requiring you to so much as touch your wallet.”

Buffett's War Chest

Berkshire held more than $138 billion in cash at the end of last year

Source: Company filings

Buffett spent a sizable portion of Saturday’s letter delving into buybacks, a substantial shift for an investor who previously had largely shunned the practice and instead favored purchasing big businesses or stocks of other companies. Heloosenedthe buyback policy in 2018 as Berkshire’s cash pile kept reaching new heights. And Berkshire stock, which has underperformed the broader market in recent years, continued that trend last year with shares just gaining 2.4% compared to the 16% rally in the S&P 500 Index.

Buffett had long been careful with buybacks, a trait that harkens back to his days running a partnership. In his letter released in 2019 after the buyback change, he made it clear that he wants investors to be fully informed about the company before they decide to sell their shares back to the firm.

He spent his recent letter acknowledging that there were investors, including index funds, professional managers and individuals, who were required to hold some Berkshire shares or would be likely to come and go based on their investing judgment. He’d still stick by the investors who want to invest for the long term, he added.

“Charlie and I would be less than human if we did notfeela special kinship with our fifth bucket: the million-plus individual investors who simply trust us to represent their interests, whatever the future may bring,” Buffett said in his letter released Saturday, referring to long-time business partner, Charlie Munger. “They have joined us with no intent to leave, adopting a mindset similar to that held by our original partners.”

Cash Pile

Berkshire still has more than $138 billion in cash to deploy. A portion of the never-ending cash flow will be sucked up by two of its businesses, the railroad and energy operations, and Buffett said the incremental investment will probably generate “appropriate” returns. Railroad BNSF has invested $41 billion in fixed assets, and has paid $41.8 billion in dividends to the conglomerate since its purchase in 2010, Buffett said in his letter.

While the attractiveness of share buybacks might come or go based on the market’s price for Berkshire, the conglomerate still has those two large operations that continuously help reinvest funds, according to shareholder Thomas Russo. That, Russo argues, helps ease the pressure on Berkshire to do an “elephant-sized acquisition” to generate more returns.

“He doesn’t really have to find the elephant because he has two elephants already corralled that need to be fed,” said Russo, who oversees a portfolio including Berkshire at investment adviser Gardner Russo & Gardner. “One of them is Burlington Northern and one of them is Berkshire Hathaway Energy. He can deploy tens of billions of dollars on an ongoing basis, bringing bothup tostandard,” and then still have funds to deploy in an acquisition.

One of Berkshire’s top three most valuable assets these days is actually a $120 billion holding of Apple Inc. shares, an investment he likened in importance to the railroad. Berkshire hasended upwith an even larger portion of the company’s shares thanks in part to Apple’s own appetite for buybacks, Buffett acknowledged in the letter.

What's moving marketsStart your day with the 5 Things newsletter.EmailBloomberg may send me offers and promotions.Sign UpBy submitting my information, I agree to thePrivacy Policyand Terms of Service.

“He’s redefined what an elephant can be,” said James Armstrong, who manages assets including Berkshire shares as president of Henry H. Armstrong Associates. “An elephant can be thought of as a 5.4% interest in Apple.”

Some of Berkshire’s major tweaks to its $281 billion stock portfolio last year were done to reposition its holdings. Throughout 2020, Buffett’s company cut its holdings in banks, insurance and finance firms -- an exposure that constituted more than 41% of the portfolio at the end of 2019 -- to just 24% of the portfolio by the end of last year. Jones & Co., said in an interview. “He is finding some value given all the limitations. He can’t put a substantial amount of capital to work into any individual stock unless it’s a large one.
