Even after the recent sell-off, Tesla is valued at $500 billion, making it one of the most valuable stocks in the country, and several times more valuable than peers like <strong>General Motors </strong>and <strong>Ford</strong>.</p><p>However, Tesla is now facing challenges on multiple fronts. Vehicle deliveries were not only down in the first quarter, but also significantly short of its production, indicating weakening demand. While the company hasn&#39;t yet reported first-quarter earnings, profits are likely to be down significantly as prices have fallen due to increasing competition in the EV industry.</p><p>Additionally, media reports said that the company is putting the development of its mass market-priced Model 2 on pause so it can it focus on its robotaxi and full self-driving technology.</p><p>Tesla is also laying off more than 10% of its workforce, another indicator that demand is underwhelming, and two key executives involved with battery and vehicle manufacturing said they were leaving the company.</p><h2 id=\"id_4176236142\">Down 37% this year, is Tesla a buy?</h2><p>With EV sales struggling amid increasing competition, weakening demand, and high interest rates, Tesla is pivoting its hopes to its robotaxi and full self-driving technology.</p><p>CEO Elon Musk said the company would unveil its robotaxi on August 8, but the company is also notorious for delaying its promises and product releases, and Musk has a pattern of using such promises when it&#39;s struggling.</p><p>Tesla&#39;s robotaxi has the potential to be a game-changer for the company, but even if Tesla does launch the robotaxi in August, regulation is likely to make a full roll-out challenging.</p><p>Autonomous vehicles were predicted to go mainstream several years ago, but that didn&#39;t happen due to regulatory pressure, safety concerns, and media scrutiny, among other issues.</p><p>However, Tesla isn&#39;t the only company working on self-driving technology. <strong>Alphabet</strong>&#39;s Waymo has racked up millions of miles of driverless transportation and is now actively ferrying passengers in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. <strong>General Motors</strong>&#39; Cruise was also active in San Francisco until regulators recently pulled it off the road after too many infractions. Other tech and auto companies have also made significant progress in autonomous driving as well.</p><p>Tesla is still priced at a premium even though the core growth story, selling EVs, appears to be on hold, at least as long as deliveries and prices both keep falling.</p><p>A recovery in the stock will take a return to solid growth in EV sales and profits or a blowout presentation of the robotaxi, as autonomy is already priced into the stock.</p><p>In the current economic environment and with the broader headwinds in the electric vehicle sector, that looks more likely to be a losing bet. Whatever ends up getting unveiled in August, the sense of Tesla seeking to reframe the story around expansive visions of AI, rather than the current reality of shrinking volumes of vehicles, is palpable.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Indeed, the same weekend Tesla informed employees of the layoffs, it slashed the monthly subscription fee on its full-self driving driver assistance package in half. As with boxes on four wheels, the future does not sell itself, it seems. While the new price of $99 per month may tempt more drivers to sign up for FSD that way, it is also likely to take away from those who buy the package upfront, which is $12,000 currently, adding a further headwind to profit margins, at least in the near term.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/0d8e68d539f59a1ef984ca728747de99\" tg-width=\"944\" tg-height=\"579\"/></p><p>The layoffs will offer some shield, but it is tough to quantify the benefits. Based on the current consensus forecast, that’s maybe 4-5% of 2024 earnings. Of course, these are guesstimates, but this feels more like saving pennies than something transformational for the finances — and the stock.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">For that, Tesla needs a new low-cost model to revamp its lineup and expand the market. Or a truly functional robotaxi. The former looks at least a year or two off. With fears over a prolonged EV market slowdown, EPS estimates for Q1 &#39;24 trending down and investor sentiment taking a drastic turn compared to last year, I believe there is a contrarian investment opportunity here. For those reasons, I am upgrading my rating of Tesla from hold to buy.</p><h2 id=\"id_3557500849\">Making sense of the latest delivery report and reasons for rating change</h2><p>Tesla’s delivery report showed that the EV maker produced 433,371 electric vehicles in Q1’24 and delivered 386,810 cars in Q1&#39;24. In the year-earlier period, Tesla produced 440,808 electric vehicles (-1.7% Y/Y) and delivered 422,875 electric vehicles (-8.5% Y/Y). The delivery accomplishment also fell way short of analyst expectations, which called for 449,080 deliveries (-13.8%), resulting in the biggest sales-miss for Tesla ever. It was Tesla’s first drop in deliveries, on a year over year basis, since Q2 ’20. The EV maker named its production ramp for the Model 3 as a reason for the drop in deliveries in the first-quarter.</p><p>While it is easy to jump on the bandwagon and criticize Tesla for its delivery shortcomings, the bigger picture is still overwhelmingly in favor of the EV company. While Tesla was overtaken by BYD Company (OTCPK:BYDDF) in the fourth-quarter as the world’s largest EV maker by output, the U.S. company has grown its deliveries over a long period of time and consistently reached new delivery records, including last year, which is when Tesla delivered 38% Y/Y delivery growth. Tesla&#39;s FY 2023 delivery records were driven chiefly by the continual popularity of the Model 3. A catalyst for incremental delivery growth in FY 2024 could come from the recent start of deliveries for the Cybertruck as well as the revamped Model 3, which became available in the U.S. in January.</p><p>The longer-term trend in Tesla&#39;s production/deliveries numbers should be more important than a temporary setback. Tesla&#39;s delivery ramp still looks pretty impressive to me...</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/7bb0b738bb59da8fa726266ce09eba67\" alt=\"InsideEVs\" title=\"InsideEVs\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"295\"/><span>InsideEVs</span></p><p>A look at Tesla&#39;s Q1 China numbers shows a more mixed picture. Tesla did reasonably well in China in March, with total deliveries of 89,064 vehicles, showing 48% month-over-month growth. China is also suffering from a slowdown in demand, which has caused companies like Li Auto (LI) to warn about its delivery potential in the first-quarter. The rebound in Tesla&#39;s March sales in China also strongly suggests that the delivery picture is not as bleak as some media reports would want investors to believe.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/651226e95327fc686541847d0b3f1dd0\" alt=\"Bloomberg\" title=\"Bloomberg\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"394\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><h2 id=\"id_378831390\">Implications for Tesla&#39;s Q1 &#39;24 earnings report</h2><p>Tesla Q1 ’24 earnings expectations are likely to continue to drop after the EV company submitted its delivery report for the first-quarter on April 2, 2024. With slowing EV growth and pressure on Tesla’s deliveries, investors are likely to lower their expectations ahead of the earnings release as well which may weigh on the company&#39;s valuation in the short term. Analysts currently model $0.58 per-share in Q1 ’24 earnings for Tesla, and analysts have revised their earnings estimates down a massive 31 times in the last 90 days.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/7ddf608e7da64ea36e38a7c3d4e12561\" alt=\"Seeking Alpha\" title=\"Seeking Alpha\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"231\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><p>The delivery report also indicates that Tesla is likely going to see slower top line growth as well more pressure on its gross margins... which has become a point of concern for many investors lately. Tesla&#39;s revenue growth slowed to 3% in the last quarter while its gross margins fell to 17.6%, showing a 6.1 PP contraction year over year. In the short term, these pressures will likely continue, and I expect a sequential drop-off in both operating and gross profit margins when the company releases Q1 earnings on April 23, 2024. However, Tesla&#39;s valuation is now so attractive relative to the company&#39;s historical valuation, that a contrarian purchase can make a lot of sense for long-term investors at this point in time, in my opinion.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/46f145a5c34770d7ad5df3aa99f55e91\" alt=\"Data by YCharts\" title=\"Data by YCharts\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"439\"/><span>Data by YCharts</span></p><h2 id=\"id_1854579543\">Tesla&#39;s valuation sends a contrarian buy signal</h2><p>Despite some points of weakness being revealed in Tesla’s Q1 ’24 delivery report, I believe that Tesla is now an exceptional bargain for EV investors from a valuation point of view. The market segment has seen its fair share of negative press lately, with electric vehicle maker Fisker (OTC:FSRN) struggling for its survival and other China-based EV manufacturers also carefully managing delivery expectations. The changing market perceptions have weighed heavily on Tesla&#39;s valuation, and shares are trading just 10% above the 1-year low of $152.37.</p><p>Tesla is currently valued at a P/S ratio of 4.1X. This is quite low for Tesla, which has historically traded at much higher price-to-revenue ratios. I am using a revenue-based multiplier for the EV maker since most other large-cap electric vehicle companies are not yet profitable (with the exception of BYD). With fears over a prolonged EV market slowdown, EPS estimates for Q1 '24 trending down and investor sentiment taking a drastic turn compared to last year, I believe there is a contrarian investment opportunity here. For those reasons, I am upgrading my rating of Tesla from hold to buy.Making sense of the latest delivery report and reasons for rating changeTesla’s delivery report showed that the EV maker produced 433,371 electric vehicles in Q1’24 and delivered 386,810 cars in Q1'24. In the year-earlier period, Tesla produced 440,808 electric vehicles (-1.7% Y/Y) and delivered 422,875 electric vehicles (-8.5% Y/Y). The delivery accomplishment also fell way short of analyst expectations, which called for 449,080 deliveries (-13.8%), resulting in the biggest sales-miss for Tesla ever. It was Tesla’s first drop in deliveries, on a year over year basis, since Q2 ’20. The EV maker named its production ramp for the Model 3 as a reason for the drop in deliveries in the first-quarter.While it is easy to jump on the bandwagon and criticize Tesla for its delivery shortcomings, the bigger picture is still overwhelmingly in favor of the EV company. While Tesla was overtaken by BYD Company (OTCPK:BYDDF) in the fourth-quarter as the world’s largest EV maker by output, the U.S. company has grown its deliveries over a long period of time and consistently reached new delivery records, including last year, which is when Tesla delivered 38% Y/Y delivery growth. Tesla's FY 2023 delivery records were driven chiefly by the continual popularity of the Model 3. A catalyst for incremental delivery growth in FY 2024 could come from the recent start of deliveries for the Cybertruck as well as the revamped Model 3, which became available in the U.S. in January.The longer-term trend in Tesla's production/deliveries numbers should be more important than a temporary setback. Analysts currently model $0.58 per-share in Q1 ’24 earnings for Tesla, and analysts have revised their earnings estimates down a massive 31 times in the last 90 days.Seeking AlphaThe delivery report also indicates that Tesla is likely going to see slower top line growth as well more pressure on its gross margins... which has become a point of concern for many investors lately. With fears over a prolonged EV market slowdown, EPS estimates for Q1 &#39;24 trending down and investor sentiment taking a drastic turn compared to last year, I believe there is a contrarian investment opportunity here. For those reasons, I am upgrading my rating of Tesla from hold to buy.</p><h2 id=\"id_3557500849\">Making sense of the latest delivery report and reasons for rating change</h2><p>Tesla’s delivery report showed that the EV maker produced 433,371 electric vehicles in Q1’24 and delivered 386,810 cars in Q1&#39;24. While Tesla was overtaken by BYD Company (OTCPK:BYDDF) in the fourth-quarter as the world’s largest EV maker by output, the U.S. company has grown its deliveries over a long period of time and consistently reached new delivery records, including last year, which is when Tesla delivered 38% Y/Y delivery growth. What would change my mind about Tesla in terms of rating would be if the EV maker were to see a consistent decline in delivery rates and weak demand for the revamped Model 3/Cybertruck.</p><h2 id=\"id_2561121998\">Final thoughts</h2><p>Tesla’s Q1 ’24 delivery report caused shares of Tesla to slide 5%, and they are now trading near 1-year lows. Investor sentiment ahead of Tesla’s Q1 ’24 earnings release has taken a serious hit, and analysts are likely to lower their EPS expectations further ahead of the earnings report on April 23, 2024... creating a low bar for Tesla to step over. While there are legitimate concerns about a slowdown in the EV market, Tesla&#39;s March deliveries in China were solid, but got surprisingly little attention. While the company hasn&#39;t yet reported first-quarter earnings, profits are likely to be down significantly as prices have fallen due to increasing competition in the EV industry.</p><p>Additionally, media reports said that the company is putting the development of its mass market-priced Model 2 on pause so it can it focus on its robotaxi and full self-driving technology.</p><p>Tesla is also laying off more than 10% of its workforce, another indicator that demand is underwhelming, and two key executives involved with battery and vehicle manufacturing said they were leaving the company.</p><h2 id=\"id_4176236142\">Down 37% this year, is Tesla a buy?</h2><p>With EV sales struggling amid increasing competition, weakening demand, and high interest rates, Tesla is pivoting its hopes to its robotaxi and full self-driving technology.</p><p>CEO Elon Musk said the company would unveil its robotaxi on August 8, but the company is also notorious for delaying its promises and product releases, and Musk has a pattern of using such promises when it&#39;s struggling.</p><p>Tesla&#39;s robotaxi has the potential to be a game-changer for the company, but even if Tesla does launch the robotaxi in August, regulation is likely to make a full roll-out challenging.</p><p>Autonomous vehicles were predicted to go mainstream several years ago, but that didn&#39;t happen due to regulatory pressure, safety concerns, and media scrutiny, among other issues.</p><p>However, Tesla isn&#39;t the only company working on self-driving technology. <strong>Alphabet</strong>&#39;s Waymo has racked up millions of miles of driverless transportation and is now actively ferrying passengers in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. <strong>General Motors</strong>&#39; Cruise was also active in San Francisco until regulators recently pulled it off the road after too many infractions. Other tech and auto companies have also made significant progress in autonomous driving as well.</p><p>Tesla is still priced at a premium even though the core growth story, selling EVs, appears to be on hold, at least as long as deliveries and prices both keep falling.</p><p>A recovery in the stock will take a return to solid growth in EV sales and profits or a blowout presentation of the robotaxi, as autonomy is already priced into the stock.</p><p>In the current economic environment and with the broader headwinds in the electric vehicle sector, that looks more likely to be a losing bet. It’s all there in the memo.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Chief Executive Elon Musk informed the ranks this weekend that more than 14,000 of them — based on year-end 2023 figures — would be leaving the electric vehicle manufacturer forthwith. The announcement is one part regret, three parts optimism. The phrase “next phase of growth” appears up top and in the kicker, with a derivative of it somewhere in the middle, too. This is all quite normal corporate stuff: Companies doing big layoffs must emphasize the leaner, fitter organism that will emerge. But this is Tesla at an interesting moment in its development, so the context matters.</p><p>The past year has witnessed a sequence of events concerning Tesla that mark it out as a car company. It has built too many vehicles relative to demand. It has slashed prices to shift them, with decidedly mixed results. Margins have been squeezed as a result. It has launched a flashy new model to reinject some vigor, with less-than-certain success. And it has done its best to reposition itself in the minds of investors as an artificial intelligence company.</p><p>OK, that last bit isn’t very car company-like. It is Tesla-like. After the debacle of quarterly sales figures earlier this month that missed by a mile and then the bizarre drama of a Reuters report that Tesla had ditched plans for a low-cost model — denied, sort of — Musk announced a forthcoming robotaxi reveal. Whatever ends up getting unveiled in August, the sense of Tesla seeking to reframe the story around expansive visions of AI, rather than the current reality of shrinking volumes of vehicles, is palpable.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Indeed, the same weekend Tesla informed employees of the layoffs, it slashed the monthly subscription fee on its full-self driving driver assistance package in half. As with boxes on four wheels, the future does not sell itself, it seems. While the new price of $99 per month may tempt more drivers to sign up for FSD that way, it is also likely to take away from those who buy the package upfront, which is $12,000 currently, adding a further headwind to profit margins, at least in the near term.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/0d8e68d539f59a1ef984ca728747de99\" tg-width=\"944\" tg-height=\"579\"/></p><p>The layoffs will offer some shield, but it is tough to quantify the benefits. As of 2022, Tesla’s global median employee compensation was about $34,000. Assuming a 10% increase since then — inflation’s been sticky — and 14,500 layoffs, that’s about $550 million before severance costs and taxes. Based on the current consensus forecast, that’s maybe 4-5% of 2024 earnings. Of course, these are guesstimates, but this feels more like saving pennies than something transformational for the finances — and the stock.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">For that, Tesla needs a new low-cost model to revamp its lineup and expand the market. Or a truly functional robotaxi. The former looks at least a year or two off. And the sudden departure of one of Tesla’s few named company officers, Andrew Baglino, senior engineer of energy and powertrain, suggests even that timeline may be optimistic. The latter looks, as ever, vastly oversold as a concept.</p><p>Tesla’s layoffs add to the narrative of being a car company dealing with a slowdown. Yet its stock remains priced at about 55 times forward earnings — roughly where it was at the start of the month before those sales figures blew a hole through forecasts (or should have). Investors don’t seem to have gotten the memo quite just yet. It’s all there in the memo.Chief Executive Elon Musk informed the ranks this weekend that more than 14,000 of them — based on year-end 2023 figures — would be leaving the electric vehicle manufacturer forthwith. The announcement is one part regret, three parts optimism. The phrase “next phase of growth” appears up top and in the kicker, with a derivative of it somewhere in the middle, too. This is all quite normal corporate stuff: Companies doing big layoffs must emphasize the leaner, fitter organism that will emerge. But this is Tesla at an interesting moment in its development, so the context matters.The past year has witnessed a sequence of events concerning Tesla that mark it out as a car company. It has built too many vehicles relative to demand. It has slashed prices to shift them, with decidedly mixed results. Margins have been squeezed as a result. It has launched a flashy new model to reinject some vigor, with less-than-certain success. And it has done its best to reposition itself in the minds of investors as an artificial intelligence company.OK, that last bit isn’t very car company-like. It is Tesla-like. After the debacle of quarterly sales figures earlier this month that missed by a mile and then the bizarre drama of a Reuters report that Tesla had ditched plans for a low-cost model — denied, sort of — Musk announced a forthcoming robotaxi reveal. Whatever ends up getting unveiled in August, the sense of Tesla seeking to reframe the story around expansive visions of AI, rather than the current reality of shrinking volumes of vehicles, is palpable.Indeed, the same weekend Tesla informed employees of the layoffs, it slashed the monthly subscription fee on its full-self driving driver assistance package in half. As with boxes on four wheels, the future does not sell itself, it seems. While the new price of $99 per month may tempt more drivers to sign up for FSD that way, it is also likely to take away from those who buy the package upfront, which is $12,000 currently, adding a further headwind to profit margins, at least in the near term.The layoffs will offer some shield, but it is tough to quantify the benefits. As of 2022, Tesla’s global median employee compensation was about $34,000. Assuming a 10% increase since then — inflation’s been sticky — and 14,500 layoffs, that’s about $550 million before severance costs and taxes. Based on the current consensus forecast, that’s maybe 4-5% of 2024 earnings. Of course, these are guesstimates, but this feels more like saving pennies than something transformational for the finances — and the stock.For that, Tesla needs a new low-cost model to revamp its lineup and expand the market. Or a truly functional robotaxi. The former looks at least a year or two off. And the sudden departure of one of Tesla’s few named company officers, Andrew Baglino, senior engineer of energy and powertrain, suggests even that timeline may be optimistic. The latter looks, as ever, vastly oversold as a concept.Tesla’s layoffs add to the narrative of being a car company dealing with a slowdown. Yet its stock remains priced at about 55 times forward earnings — roughly where it was at the start of the month before those sales figures blew a hole through forecasts (or should have). Investors don’t seem to have gotten the memo quite just yet.
