Here's why.</p>\n<h2>AMC Entertainment</h2>\n<p>Perhaps, the most important thing investors should know about AMC is something the company itself mentioned in a recent 8-K Filing: \"We believe that recent volatility and our current market prices reflect [dynamics] unrelated to our underlying business.\"</p>\n<p>The statement goes on to caution investors against buying stock unless they are prepared to <i>lose all or a significant portion</i> of their investment. Of course, you should never invest money you can't afford to lose, but this dire warning should still rattle current and prospective shareholders.</p>\n<p>If you're not convinced, let's look at AMC's financial results. Last year, attendance and revenue fell 79% and 77%, respectively. And despite reopening roughly <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-third&nbsp;of its international theaters and two-thirds of its domestic theaters, its performance has actually worsened this year. Attendance and revenue plunged 89% and 84%, respectively, during the first quarter.</p>\n<p>Understandably, some investors are hoping things improve as the economy reopens. But that may be too late -- the competitive landscape has already shifted dramatically.</p>\n<p>During the pandemic, streaming services like HBO Max and Peacock went live, Disney+ started taking titles directly to consumers, and Universal Studios cut the theatrical exclusivity window to 17 days&nbsp;-- prior to the pandemic, AMC retained exclusive rights for about 90 days. Put simply, the company is facing more competition than ever before.</p>\n<p>As a final thought, in a recent 10-Q Filing with the SEC, AMC explained that it will need to reach 85% of pre-pandemic attendance levels by the fourth quarter of 2021 in order to comply with minimum liquidity requirements. If that doesn't happen, bankruptcy would likely be the next step, which means shareholders would \"suffer a total loss of their investment.\"</p>\n<h2>Cloudflare</h2>\n<p>Cloudflare is a cloud services provider. Its platform helps clients secure and accelerate the performance of websites and applications. For example, it recently launched Cloudflare One, a network-as-a-service solution designed to replace outdated corporate networks.</p>\n<p>Traditionally, enterprises have taken a castle-and-moat approach to network security. All sensitive data was stored in a central location, and firewall appliances and internet gateways&nbsp;were used to filter incoming and outgoing traffic. This was both costly and inefficient, often resulting in lag time for remote workers.</p>\n<p>By comparison, Cloudflare One acts as a secure access service edge&nbsp;(SASE). Rather than sending traffic through a central hub, SASE is a distributed network architecture. This means employees connect to Cloudflare's network, where traffic is filtered and security policies are enforced, then traffic is routed to the internet or the corporate network.</p>\n<p>This creates a fast, secure experience for employees, allowing them to access corporate resources and applications&nbsp;from any location, on any device. Moreover, according to research firm Gartner, 40%&nbsp;of enterprises will have plans to adopt SASE by 2024, up from just 1% in 2018. That radical shift gives Cloudflare a big opportunity.</p>\n<p>More importantly, the company is executing on that opportunity. Here's why.\nAMC Entertainment\nPerhaps, the most important thing investors should know about AMC is something the company itself mentioned in a recent 8-K Filing: \"We believe that recent volatility and our current market prices reflect [dynamics] unrelated to our underlying business.\"\nThe statement goes on to caution investors against buying stock unless they are prepared to lose all or a significant portion of their investment. Of course, you should never invest money you can't afford to lose, but this dire warning should still rattle current and prospective shareholders.\nIf you're not convinced, let's look at AMC's financial results. Last year, attendance and revenue fell 79% and 77%, respectively. And despite reopening roughly one-third of its international theaters and two-thirds of its domestic theaters, its performance has actually worsened this year. Attendance and revenue plunged 89% and 84%, respectively, during the first quarter.\nUnderstandably, some investors are hoping things improve as the economy reopens. But that may be too late -- the competitive landscape has already shifted dramatically.\nDuring the pandemic, streaming services like HBO Max and Peacock went live, Disney+ started taking titles directly to consumers, and Universal Studios cut the theatrical exclusivity window to 17 days -- prior to the pandemic, AMC retained exclusive rights for about 90 days. Put simply, the company is facing more competition than ever before.\nAs a final thought, in a recent 10-Q Filing with the SEC, AMC explained that it will need to reach 85% of pre-pandemic attendance levels by the fourth quarter of 2021 in order to comply with minimum liquidity requirements. If that doesn't happen, bankruptcy would likely be the next step, which means shareholders would \"suffer a total loss of their investment.\"\nCloudflare\nCloudflare is a cloud services provider. Its platform helps clients secure and accelerate the performance of websites and applications. For example, it recently launched Cloudflare One, a network-as-a-service solution designed to replace outdated corporate networks.\nTraditionally, enterprises have taken a castle-and-moat approach to network security. All sensitive data was stored in a central location, and firewall appliances and internet gateways were used to filter incoming and outgoing traffic. This was both costly and inefficient, often resulting in lag time for remote workers.\nBy comparison, Cloudflare One acts as a secure access service edge (SASE). Rather than sending traffic through a central hub, SASE is a distributed network architecture. This means employees connect to Cloudflare's network, where traffic is filtered and security policies are enforced, then traffic is routed to the internet or the corporate network.\nThis creates a fast, secure experience for employees, allowing them to access corporate resources and applications from any location, on any device. Moreover, according to research firm Gartner, 40% of enterprises will have plans to adopt SASE by 2024, up from just 1% in 2018. Apple: $115.6 billion</h2>\n<p>Tech kingpin <b>Apple</b> (NASDAQ:AAPL) makes up about 38% of Warren Buffett's portfolio by itself and has been dubbed \"Berkshire's third business\" by the Oracle of Omaha. Apple offers some of the strongest branding in the world, is the clear leader in smartphones in the U.S., and has been pivoting to higher-margin services under the leadership of CEO Tim Cook. Though iPhone sales remain Apple's top product, services becoming a larger percentage of total sales will help remove the revenue lumpiness associated with new product launches.</p>\n<h2>2. Bank of America: $43.2 billion</h2>\n<p>Bank stocks have long been Buffett's favorite place to put Berkshire's money work. <b>Bank of America</b> (NYSE:BAC) is Berkshire's unquestioned largest bank holding, with more than 14% of invested assets. Bank of America has done an excellent job of controlling its noninterest expenses by consolidating branches and emphasizing digital banking. American Express: $24.9 billion</h2>\n<p>Payment processor and lender <b>American Express</b> (NYSE:AXP) is Buffett's third-largest and third-longest-held stock. After 28 years of holding AmEx, Berkshire Hathaway's position has grown to almost $25 billion in value. This is a cyclical company that benefits from long periods of economic expansion, as well as its ability to attract affluent clientele. These well-to-do clients are less likely to change their spending habits when economic hiccups arise, which often means less worry about credit delinquencies for AmEx.</p>\n<h2>4. Coca-Cola: $22.5 billion</h2>\n<p>Speaking of long-tenured holdings, beverage behemoth <b>Coca-Cola</b> (NYSE:KO) is the longest-held stock in Buffett's portfolio (33 years). Coca-Cola operates in all but two countries worldwide (North Korea and Cuba) and has more than 20 brands generating at least $1 billion in annual sales. Thanks to its top-notch marketing team, it's also the best-known consumer goods brand. Coke has holiday tie-ins, has allied itself with well-known brand ambassadors, and is embracing digital advertising and social media as a way to get its message to a younger generation.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cc21d6aabfd53f63ded95ae16cbd64e1\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"468\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>5. Kraft Heinz: $14.1 billion</h2>\n<p>There's little question that <b>Kraft Heinz</b> (NASDAQ:KHC) is the oddball holding in Buffett's top 10. That's because Buffett admits to Heinz overpaying for Kraft Foods, and the combined company largely underperforming in recent years. This includes a greater than $15 billion goodwill writedown in 2019. While the pandemic has helped boost demand for packaged foods, Kraft Heinz's balance sheet is still bogged down by high debt levels and goodwill. In short, Berkshire Hathaway is sort of stuck with its 325.6 million shares.</p>\n<h2>6. Verizon Communications: $9.1 billion</h2>\n<p>Telecommunications giant <b>Verizon</b> (NYSE:VZ) is a fairly recent addition to Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio, although it's been bought hand over fist in the previous two quarters by Buffett and his team. The lure of Verizon is likely its 4.4% dividend yield, which is arguably <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the safest high-yield payouts on the planet. What's more, Verizon should benefit immensely from the rollout of 5G infrastructure. It's been a decade since the last major upgrade to download speeds, which suggests that a multiyear tech upgrade cycle will lead to higher-margin data consumption.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7343c3ce7330b86321a8ec9384d4baea\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>7. U.S. Bancorp: $8.7 billion</h2>\n<p>Next to BofA, <b>U.S. Bancorp</b> (NYSE:USB) is Buffett's favorite bank stock. It's a company that regularly trades at a premium to its book value -- and for good reason. U.S. Bancorp has seen its users embrace technology, with the percentage of consumer loans completed digitally skyrocketing over the past two years. Being able to consolidate its physical branches, while also avoiding riskier derivative investments that have gotten U.S. money-center banks in trouble, has helped U.S. Bancorp to some of the highest return on assets among big banks.</p>\n<h2>8. Moody's: $8.5 billion</h2>\n<p>Credit agency and analytics company <b>Moody's</b> (NYSE:MCO) is yet another top-10 holding that's been held for longer than two decades. With an initial cost basis of just over $10, Berkshire Hathaway is sitting on an unrealized gain of better than 3,300% -- and this isn't accounting for dividends. Historically low lending rates have kept Moody's credit rating segment busy, while volatile trading markets are boosting demand for Moody's analytics. BYD: $6.2 billion</h2>\n<p>Back in 2008, Buffett acquired 225 million shares of China-based electric-vehicle (EV) manufacturer <b>BYD</b> (OTC:BYDDY)&nbsp;for $1.03 a share (it closed this past week at $27.65 a share). In March, BYD sold 16,301 EVs, which is more than higher-profile competitors <b>NIO</b>&nbsp;and <b>XPeng</b>&nbsp;delivered on a combined basis in the same month. With the Society of Automotive Engineers of China forecasting that half of all new vehicles sales in 2035 will be powered by alternative energy, BYD is in pole position to disrupt the largest auto market in the world.</p>\n<h2>10. DaVita: $4.4 billion</h2>\n<p>Rounding out the top 10 is kidney dialysis services company <b>DaVita</b> (NYSE:DVA). Buffett's fascination with the company is likely a numbers play. Over time, an aging U.S. population is going to become more reliant on kidney dialysis services for maintenance purposes. As the clear leader in providing these services, DaVita should see a steady uptick in demand and reimbursement for its services. He focuses on a few sectors and industries that interest him, buys companies with clear-cut competitive advantages, and most importantly hangs onto those stakes for a very long time.\nAnother source of Buffett's success is concentration. The Oracle of Omaha doesn't believe diversification is necessary if you know what you're doing. This is readily apparent in Berkshire Hathaway's $302.6 billion investment portfolio. Apple: $115.6 billion\nTech kingpin Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) makes up about 38% of Warren Buffett's portfolio by itself and has been dubbed \"Berkshire's third business\" by the Oracle of Omaha. Apple offers some of the strongest branding in the world, is the clear leader in smartphones in the U.S., and has been pivoting to higher-margin services under the leadership of CEO Tim Cook. Though iPhone sales remain Apple's top product, services becoming a larger percentage of total sales will help remove the revenue lumpiness associated with new product launches.\n2. Bank of America: $43.2 billion\nBank stocks have long been Buffett's favorite place to put Berkshire's money work. Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) is Berkshire's unquestioned largest bank holding, with more than 14% of invested assets. Bank of America has done an excellent job of controlling its noninterest expenses by consolidating branches and emphasizing digital banking. It's also in line to benefit more than any other money-center bank from an eventual rise in interest rates.\nImage source: American Express.\n3. American Express: $24.9 billion\nPayment processor and lender American Express (NYSE:AXP) is Buffett's third-largest and third-longest-held stock. After 28 years of holding AmEx, Berkshire Hathaway's position has grown to almost $25 billion in value. This is a cyclical company that benefits from long periods of economic expansion, as well as its ability to attract affluent clientele. These well-to-do clients are less likely to change their spending habits when economic hiccups arise, which often means less worry about credit delinquencies for AmEx.\n4. Coca-Cola: $22.5 billion\nSpeaking of long-tenured holdings, beverage behemoth Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) is the longest-held stock in Buffett's portfolio (33 years). Coca-Cola operates in all but two countries worldwide (North Korea and Cuba) and has more than 20 brands generating at least $1 billion in annual sales. Thanks to its top-notch marketing team, it's also the best-known consumer goods brand. Kraft Heinz: $14.1 billion\nThere's little question that Kraft Heinz (NASDAQ:KHC) is the oddball holding in Buffett's top 10. That's because Buffett admits to Heinz overpaying for Kraft Foods, and the combined company largely underperforming in recent years. This includes a greater than $15 billion goodwill writedown in 2019. While the pandemic has helped boost demand for packaged foods, Kraft Heinz's balance sheet is still bogged down by high debt levels and goodwill. In short, Berkshire Hathaway is sort of stuck with its 325.6 million shares.\n6. Verizon Communications: $9.1 billion\nTelecommunications giant Verizon (NYSE:VZ) is a fairly recent addition to Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio, although it's been bought hand over fist in the previous two quarters by Buffett and his team. The lure of Verizon is likely its 4.4% dividend yield, which is arguably one of the safest high-yield payouts on the planet. What's more, Verizon should benefit immensely from the rollout of 5G infrastructure. It's been a decade since the last major upgrade to download speeds, which suggests that a multiyear tech upgrade cycle will lead to higher-margin data consumption.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n7. U.S. Bancorp: $8.7 billion\nNext to BofA, U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) is Buffett's favorite bank stock. It's a company that regularly trades at a premium to its book value -- and for good reason. U.S. Bancorp has seen its users embrace technology, with the percentage of consumer loans completed digitally skyrocketing over the past two years. Being able to consolidate its physical branches, while also avoiding riskier derivative investments that have gotten U.S. money-center banks in trouble, has helped U.S. Bancorp to some of the highest return on assets among big banks.\n8. Moody's: $8.5 billion\nCredit agency and analytics company Moody's (NYSE:MCO) is yet another top-10 holding that's been held for longer than two decades. With an initial cost basis of just over $10, Berkshire Hathaway is sitting on an unrealized gain of better than 3,300% -- and this isn't accounting for dividends. Historically low lending rates have kept Moody's credit rating segment busy, while volatile trading markets are boosting demand for Moody's analytics. BYD: $6.2 billion\nBack in 2008, Buffett acquired 225 million shares of China-based electric-vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD (OTC:BYDDY) for $1.03 a share (it closed this past week at $27.65 a share). In March, BYD sold 16,301 EVs, which is more than higher-profile competitors NIO and XPeng delivered on a combined basis in the same month. With the Society of Automotive Engineers of China forecasting that half of all new vehicles sales in 2035 will be powered by alternative energy, BYD is in pole position to disrupt the largest auto market in the world.\n10. DaVita: $4.4 billion\nRounding out the top 10 is kidney dialysis services company DaVita (NYSE:DVA). Buffett's fascination with the company is likely a numbers play. Over time, an aging U.S. population is going to become more reliant on kidney dialysis services for maintenance purposes. As the clear leader in providing these services, DaVita should see a steady uptick in demand and reimbursement for its services. It will initially launch the marketplace in the U.S. before expanding into other countries.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fc4c819061f1fb41dd3e6cc33a8a8ae8\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"465\"><span>Image source: Netflix.</span></p>\n<p>This doesn't represent Netflix's first attempt at selling tie-in products for its streaming franchises. <b>Target</b>, for example, already carries a wide range of <i>Yasuke</i> products. However, Netflix.shop marks Netflix's first attempt to sell all those tie-in products through its own online marketplace.</p>\n<p>Netflix.shop will spark comparisons to <b>Disney</b> (NYSE:DIS) and <b>Amazon </b>(NASDAQ:AMZN), but is it actually chasing those companies? Or should investors look overseas to understand Netflix's true goals?</p>\n<h2>Could Netflix be responding to Disney and Amazon?</h2>\n<p>Netflix's online store is much smaller than <b>Disney</b>'s (NYSE:DIS) sprawling retail business. At the end of 2020, Disney owned and operated about 200 stores across North America, 60 stores in Europe, 45 stores in Japan, and two stores in China. It also sells its products online and licenses its brands to third-party companies.</p>\n<p>Netflix competes against Disney in the streaming market, but I doubt it will follow Disney's example and open hundreds of brick-and-mortar stores, for three simple reasons.</p>\n<p>First, brick-and-mortar stores are more capital-intensive than online stores. It would be absurd for Netflix, which already plans to spend $17 billion on new streaming content this year, to set aside fresh cash for new physical stores instead of expanding its streaming library.</p>\n<p>Second, physical stores are highly exposed to online competition and the decline of offline shopping. Lastly, Netflix doesn't own as many popular franchises as Disney, which can easily fill its shelves with merchandise from its namesake properties as well as Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars products.</p>\n<p>Netflix.shop also might seem like an attempt to counter Amazon, which leveraged the strength of its Prime e-commerce ecosystem to tether more viewers to its Prime Video service.</p>\n<p>That strategy would represent a reversal of Amazon's strategy since Netflix would be leveraging its strength in streaming video to expand into the retail market. But I also doubt Netflix plans to pour billions of dollars into challenging Amazon in the cutthroat e-commerce market.</p>\n<h2>So what's Netflix's game plan?</h2>\n<p>Instead of comparing Netflix.shop to Disney or Amazon, investors should look at a Chinese tech company called<b> Bilibili</b> (NASDAQ:BILI) to understand Netflix's angle.</p>\n<p>Bilibili operates a popular streaming-video platform for anime, comics, and gaming (ACG) content in China. It served 223 million monthly active users and 60 million daily active users last quarter.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/44f1ed32c2ba2313bed33d9a885d976b\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"559\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>Bilibili also operates an e-commerce site that sells tie-in products for its ACG franchises. The site is integrated with <b>Alibaba</b>'s (NYSE:BABA) Taobao marketplace and accounts for most of Bilibili's \"e-commerce and others\" revenue.</p>\n<p>Bilibili's \"e-commerce and others\" revenue <i>more than doubled </i>last year and accounted for nearly 13% of its top line, which indicates a streaming-video platform that specializes in anime can operate a successful online marketplace for tie-in content.</p>\n<p>That's probably why Netflix repeatedly mentioned \"anime\" in its press release for Netflix.shop.</p>\n<p>Netflix has added a lot of anime and gaming-related content to its streaming library in recent years, including <i>Yasuke</i>, <i>Voltron</i>, <i>Castlevania</i>, <i>The Witcher</i>, and its upcoming<i> Assassin's Creed</i> show. All that niche content could support the expansion of its marketplace for tie-in products, which would possibly lock in more viewers and generate additional revenue.</p>\n<p>Netflix could also offer exclusive discounts for its subscribers, which might convince more of its 208 million subscribers to become regular shoppers. That growth could also convince more companies to license its franchises for third-party products.</p>\n<h2>The bottom line</h2>\n<p>Netflix's retail expansion is surprising but not unprecedented. Instead of comparing Netflix.shop to Disney or Amazon, investors would do well to study Bilibili to gauge Netflix's true growth potential.</p>\n<p>This effort won't move the needle for Netflix anytime soon, but it shows the company is thinking out of the box to promote its franchises and enter new markets. It's also selling anime-inspired collectibles from up-and-coming designers like Nathalie Nguyen, Kristopher Kites, and Jordan Bentley.\nNetflix.shop will also eventually sell exclusive tie-in products for popular series like The Witcher and Stranger Things, as well as Netflix-branded apparel from the Japanese fashion house BEAMS. It will initially launch the marketplace in the U.S. before expanding into other countries.\nImage source: Netflix.\nThis doesn't represent Netflix's first attempt at selling tie-in products for its streaming franchises. Target, for example, already carries a wide range of Yasuke products. However, Netflix.shop marks Netflix's first attempt to sell all those tie-in products through its own online marketplace.\nNetflix.shop will spark comparisons to Disney (NYSE:DIS) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), but is it actually chasing those companies? Or should investors look overseas to understand Netflix's true goals?\nCould Netflix be responding to Disney and Amazon?\nNetflix's online store is much smaller than Disney's (NYSE:DIS) sprawling retail business. At the end of 2020, Disney owned and operated about 200 stores across North America, 60 stores in Europe, 45 stores in Japan, and two stores in China. It also sells its products online and licenses its brands to third-party companies.\nNetflix competes against Disney in the streaming market, but I doubt it will follow Disney's example and open hundreds of brick-and-mortar stores, for three simple reasons.\nFirst, brick-and-mortar stores are more capital-intensive than online stores. It would be absurd for Netflix, which already plans to spend $17 billion on new streaming content this year, to set aside fresh cash for new physical stores instead of expanding its streaming library.\nSecond, physical stores are highly exposed to online competition and the decline of offline shopping. Lastly, Netflix doesn't own as many popular franchises as Disney, which can easily fill its shelves with merchandise from its namesake properties as well as Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars products.\nNetflix.shop also might seem like an attempt to counter Amazon, which leveraged the strength of its Prime e-commerce ecosystem to tether more viewers to its Prime Video service.\nThat strategy would represent a reversal of Amazon's strategy since Netflix would be leveraging its strength in streaming video to expand into the retail market. But I also doubt Netflix plans to pour billions of dollars into challenging Amazon in the cutthroat e-commerce market.\nSo what's Netflix's game plan?\nInstead of comparing Netflix.shop to Disney or Amazon, investors should look at a Chinese tech company called Bilibili (NASDAQ:BILI) to understand Netflix's angle.\nBilibili operates a popular streaming-video platform for anime, comics, and gaming (ACG) content in China. It served 223 million monthly active users and 60 million daily active users last quarter.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nBilibili also operates an e-commerce site that sells tie-in products for its ACG franchises. The site is integrated with Alibaba's (NYSE:BABA) Taobao marketplace and accounts for most of Bilibili's \"e-commerce and others\" revenue.\nBilibili's \"e-commerce and others\" revenue more than doubled last year and accounted for nearly 13% of its top line, which indicates a streaming-video platform that specializes in anime can operate a successful online marketplace for tie-in content.\nThat's probably why Netflix repeatedly mentioned \"anime\" in its press release for Netflix.shop.\nNetflix has added a lot of anime and gaming-related content to its streaming library in recent years, including Yasuke, Voltron, Castlevania, The Witcher, and its upcoming Assassin's Creed show. All that niche content could support the expansion of its marketplace for tie-in products, which would possibly lock in more viewers and generate additional revenue.\nNetflix could also offer exclusive discounts for its subscribers, which might convince more of its 208 million subscribers to become regular shoppers. That growth could also convince more companies to license its franchises for third-party products.\nThe bottom line\nNetflix's retail expansion is surprising but not unprecedented. Instead of comparing Netflix.shop to Disney or Amazon, investors would do well to study Bilibili to gauge Netflix's true growth potential.\nThis effort won't move the needle for Netflix anytime soon, but it shows the company is thinking out of the box to promote its franchises and enter new markets.
