But analysts, on the whole, prefer PayPal.</p><p>PayPal and Square are well-known to investors as rapidly growing players in the payment-processing space. They don't compete directly in all areas, but there are enough similarities to make a meaningful pairing.</p><p>Where PayPal and Square fit in</p><p>PayPal Holdings Inc. (PYPL) was spun off from eBay Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EBAY\">$(EBAY)$</a> in July 2015. Square was founded in 2009 by CEO Jack Dorsey and James McKelvey Jr. (a current board member), and went public in November 2015. Dorsey also serves as CEO of <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWTR\">Twitter</a> Inc. (TWTR), which he co-founded in 2006.</p><p>PayPal said in its 2020 10-K filing  with the Securities and Exchange Commission that 13% of its revenue for the year came from customers on eBay's Marketplace platform. It also said that no other revenue source represented more than 10% of the whole.</p><p>PayPal makes it easy to do payments online through its secure digital wallet -- a user simply signs into their PayPal account to make a payment to the merchant from a bank account or credit card. The purchaser doesn't need to provide any financial information to the merchant.</p><p>During 2020, 93% of PayPal's revenue came from transactions, with the rest from \"other value-added services,\" a category that  has declined over the past two full years.</p><p>Square offers what it calls a \"cohesive commerce ecosystem,\" which includes hardware and software, to help merchants process point-of-sale transactions and online transactions. Square also has Cash App, which helps individual users, businesses and organizations transfer money or bitcoin  through the app or by email.</p><p>\"Customers can also use their stored funds to buy and sell bitcoin and equity investments within Cash App,\" according to Square's first-quarter 10-Q report .</p><p>Here's a comparison of quarterly and annual transaction volume for the two companies, with figures in millions:</p><p>PayPal has a much larger payment-processing business  than Square, and recently, its quarterly and annual transaction volumes have grown more rapidly.</p><p>Key metrics</p><p>Size, revenue and profit</p><p>Here is a comparison of the companies' market capitalizations and GAAP net revenue figures for the first quarters of 2021 and 2020:</p><p>GAAP stands for Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, under which Square's revenue from its bitcoin holdings has caused the company's total revenue to balloon. Here's Square's more detailed revenue breakdown:</p><p>This illustrates why an investor considering an individual stock has to take a closer look to form their own opinion.</p><p>Here's what Square had to say about its revenue reporting in its first-quarter shareholder letter :</p><p>We deduct bitcoin revenue because our role is to facilitate customers' access to bitcoin. When customers buy bitcoin through Cash App, we only apply a small margin to the market cost of bitcoin, which tends to be volatile and outside our control. Therefore, we believe bitcoin gross profit better reflects the economic benefits as well as our performance from these transactions.</p><p>More from Square's shareholder letter:</p><p>While bitcoin revenue was $3.51 billion in the first quarter of 2021, up approximately 11x year over year, bitcoin gross profit was only $75 million, or approximately 2% of bitcoin revenue.</p><p>So Square's adjusted net revenue for the first quarter was $1.55 billion, increasing 44% from the year-earlier quarter.</p><p>Read:A bitcoin battle of the billionaires ensues as Jack Dorsey faces off with Musk on 'green' merits of world's No. 1 crypto</p><p>Excitement for bitcoin caused the spike in revenue for Square, as its Cash App users participated in the eightfold increase in the cryptocurrency's price in dollars over the 12 months through March 31.</p><p>Here's a comparison of gross profits (earnings before operating expenses) and operating profits (earnings before interest and taxes)  for PayPal and Square for the first quarters of 2021 and 2020:</p><p>PayPal has the larger payment-processing business, by far, while Square is growing its profits more quickly. Despite Square's point that it derives a relatively small portion of its profits from bitcoin revenue, the massive amount of revenue from bitcoin transactions, including customers' trades through Cash App, show the potential of this type of customer activity.</p><p>Returns on common equity and invested capital</p><p>These returns can give some insight into how well a management team deploys capital:</p><p>Return on invested capital is earnings divided by combined debt and equity. It is a measure of capital allocation efficiency and can be useful when comparing companies that are similar. In this case, none of these numbers are bad -- both companies are still growing their businesses in a dynamic environment.</p><p>Earnings estimates to 2025</p><p>Here are the actual earnings-per-share results for 2020 with consensus estimates among analysts polled by FactSet going out to 2025:</p><p>Here are estimated annual percentage  increases in EPS based on the above, plus an estimated five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR):</p><p>That five-year CAGR for Square is bumped up by the expected EPS breakout in 2021. But if we run a four-year EPS CAGR from 2021 through 2025, the results are 21% for PayPal and 46% for Square. Both are impressive, but Square comes out on top if analysts' estimates are close to accurate. This helps explain the much higher forward price-to-earnings ratio for Square that you can see further down.</p><p>Cash flow</p><p>In the modern economy, many investors believe free cash flow -- remaining cash flow after planned capital expenditures -- is a critically important measure. One reason for this is that so many <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-time non-cash items can affect EPS. Another is that free cash flow can be deployed through business expansion, acquisitions, share buybacks dividends or other actions that will presumably be good for shareholders.</p><p>Square has had negative free cash flow <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FCF\">$(FCF)$</a> for two of the past four quarters, which isn't surprising, as the company emphasizes growing its business. So it may be most useful to look ahead. FactSet has consensus estimates for FCF per share going out to 2023:</p><p>Again, the analysts expect great things from both companies, especially Square.</p><p>Stock valuation and performance</p><p>Here are forward price-to-earnings and price-to-sales ratios based on consensus estimates for the next 12 months, along with total return figures:</p><p>Those are high valuations to expected earnings and sales. so-called fear gauge is elevated, and that could bode well for stocks if history is a guide.</p>\n<p>The spread between the Cboe Volatility Index, or VIX, and two-week S&amp;P 500 realized volatility has widened to a point that historically has been followed by a volatility decline and stocks on average moving higher, JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. strategists Marko Kolanovic and Bram Kaplan wrote in a note Wednesday. Historically, three months after that spread moved this wide, the VIX fell 11 points and the market rallied an average 12% with a move higher 87% of the time, they said.</p>\n<p>“Given the VIX is at a near-record premium to actual equity volatility, we think selling the ‘VIX bubble’ represents a good market opportunity,” the strategists wrote.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/090b90671c410c2de55d41f9901794b4\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p>The VIX jumped a year ago as the Covid-19 pandemic began to spread and affect the global economy, sending markets into a tailspin. The gauge, which has a lifetime average around 19.5, has largely remained above 20 even as stocks hit record highs on encouraging pandemic news. It has also stayed high relative to measures of swings in&nbsp;other asset classes&nbsp;like credit and rates.</p>\n<p>There is one potential caveat for equity volatility investors. Michael Purves, the CEO of Tallbacken CapitalAdvisorsLLC, said there are fewer participants willing to bet on declining swings after the culling of the short-volatility industry via VIX spikes in 2018 and March 2020. That’s probably keeping the gauge from falling to its lows from years like 2016 and 2017, he said, pointing to a dearth of put-option volume as evidence.</p>\n<p>“There’s a lack of volatility sellers to take this thing lower,” Purves said in an interview. “If there was a lot of fear, you’d see put volumes being higher.”</p>\n<p>Still, there are trades that can take advantage of the current levels in the VIX complex, according to Peter Cecchini, founder of AlphaOmegaAdvisorsLLC. The yield has climbed for five straight weeks and pushed up from a 0.915% at the start of 2020 to its present lofty level. Bond prices fall as yields rise.</p>\n<p>The rise in rates has been blamed for a violent rotation out of highflying growth stocks into more cyclical, value-oriented names.</p>\n<p>Wild swings in the market, indicative of the rotation under way, was on display Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average surging to nearly 32,000, while the S&amp;P 500 index slipped 0.5% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite traded sharply lower.</p>\n<p>Intraday and interday swings have been pronounced as well.</p>\n<p>Against that backdrop, Thomas Lee, founder of Fundstrat Global Advisors, offers seven reasons why investors should buy the dips that play out:</p>\n<p>1. Washington is moving forward with passing a large fiscal relief package, and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has made a forceful case for it.</p>\n<p>2. The Federal Reserve has been vocal in its policy stance (last week's minutes affirmed) and the Fed is patient.</p>\n<p>3. U.S. economy is reopening and economic momentum is strong -- so strong, JPMorgan's Chief Economist, Bruce Kasman, says the U.S. V-shape recovery will soon surpass China. Wow.</p>\n<p>4. There remains a substantial perception gap between policy makers/media and COVID-19 realized data, and a closing of this gap is positive for risk assets.</p>\n<p>5. Millennials are steadily allocating assets toward equities, and the surge in retail brokerage account openings is evidence of this.</p>\n<p>6. Bonds are becoming less attractive total return vehicles as inflationary expectation are increasing, boosting the attractiveness of equities.</p>\n<p>7. The yield has climbed for five straight weeks and pushed up from a 0.915% at the start of 2020 to its present lofty level. Bond prices fall as yields rise.</p>\n<p>The rise in rates has been blamed for a violent rotation out of highflying growth stocks into more cyclical, value-oriented names.</p>\n<p>Wild swings in the market, indicative of the rotation under way, was on display Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average surging to nearly 32,000, while the S&amp;P 500 index slipped 0.5% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite traded sharply lower.</p>\n<p>Intraday and interday swings have been pronounced as well.</p>\n<p>Against that backdrop, Thomas Lee, founder of Fundstrat Global Advisors, offers seven reasons why investors should buy the dips that play out:</p>\n<p>1. Until Tuesday, Goldman Sachs GS, -0.91% restricted its robo-advisory service, Marcus, to people who had at least $10 million to invest.</p>\n<p>Now anyone with at least $1,000 to invest in can access the same trading algorithms that have been used by some of Goldman Sachs’ wealthiest clients for a 0.35% annual advisory fee. But investing experts say there are more costs to consider before jumping on the robo-investing train.</p>\n<p>“Much like in Vegas, the house generally wins,” said Vance Barse, a San Diego, California-based financial advisor who runs a company called Your Dedicated Fiduciary.</p>\n<p>Although the 35 basis-point price tag is a “loss leader” to Goldman Sachs, he said companies typically make such offers in order to attract clients to cross-sell them banking products.</p>\n<p>“People forget that banks are ultimately in the business of making money,” he said.</p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs declined to comment.</p>\n<p>The company is among other major financial-services firms offering digital advisers, including Vanguard, Fidelity and Schwab SCHW, +1.03% and startups such as Betterment and Wealthfront.</p>\n<p>Fees for robo advisers can start at around 0.25%, and increase to 1% and above for traditional brokers. A survey of nearly 1,000 financial planners by Inside Information, a trade publication, found that the bigger the portfolio, the lower the percentage clients paid in fees.</p>\n<p>The median annual charge hovered at around 1% for portfolios of $1 million or less, and 0.5% for portfolios worth $5 million to $10 million.</p>\n<p>Robo advisers like those on offer from Goldman Sachs and Betterment differ from robo platforms like Robinhood. The former suggest portfolios focused on exchange-traded funds, while Robinhood allows users to invest in individual ETFs, stocks, options and even cryptocurrencies.</p>\n<p><b>Robo investing as a self-driving car</b></p>\n<p>Consumers have turned to robo-investing at unprecedented levels during the pandemic.</p>\n<p>The rate of new accounts opened jumped between 50% and 300% during the first quarter of 2020 compared to the fourth quarter of last year, according to a May report published by research and advisory firm Aite Group.</p>\n<p>So what is rob-investing? Think of it like a self-driving car.</p>\n<p>You put in your destination, buckle up in the backseat and your driver (robo adviser) will get there. You, the passenger, can’t easily slam the breaks if you fear your driver is leading you in the wrong direction. Nor can you put your foot on the gas pedal if you’re in a rush and want to get to your destination faster.</p>\n<p>Robo-investing platforms use advanced-trading algorithm software to design investment portfolios based on factors such as an individual’s appetite for risk-taking and desired short-term and long-term returns.</p>\n<p>There are over 200 platforms that provide these services charging typically no more than a 0.5% annual advisory fee, compared to the 1% annual fee human investment advisors charge.</p>\n<p>And rather than investing entirely on your own, which can become a second job and lead to emotional investment decisions, robo advisers handle buying and selling assets.</p>\n<p>Cynthia Loh, Schwab vice president of Digital Advice and Innovation, disagrees, and argues that robo investing doesn’t mean giving technology control of your money. Schwab, she said, has a team of investment experts who oversee investment strategy and keep watch during periods of market volatility, although some services have more input from humans than others.</p>\n<p>As she recently wrote on MarketWatch: “One common misconception about automated investing is that choosing a robo adviser essentially means handing control of your money over to robots. The truth is that robo solutions have a combination of automated and human components running things behind the scenes.”</p>\n<p><b>Robos appeal to inexperienced investors</b></p>\n<p>Robo investing tends to appeal to inexperienced investors or ones who don’t have the time or energy to manage their own portfolios. These investors can take comfort in the “set it and forget it approach to investing and overtime let the markets do their thing,” Barse said.</p>\n<p>That makes it much easier to stomach market volatility knowing that you don’t necessarily have to make spur-of-the-moment decisions to buy or sell assets, said Tiffany Lam-Balfour, an investing and retirement specialist at NerdWallet.</p>\n<p>“When you’re investing, you don’t want to keep looking at the market and going ‘Oh I need to get out of this,’” she said. “You want to leave it to the professionals to get you through it because they know what your time horizon is, and they’ll adjust your portfolio automatically for you.”</p>\n<p>That said, “you can’t just expect your investments will only go up. Even if you had the world’s best human financial adviser you can’t expect that.”</p>\n<p>Others disagree, and say robo advisers appeal to older investors. “Planning for and paying yourself in retirement is complex. There are many options out there to help investors through it, and robo investing is one of them,” Loh said.</p>\n<p>“Many thoughtful, long-term investors have discovered that they want a more modern, streamlined, and inexpensive way to invest, and robo investing fits the bill. They are happy to let technology handle the mundane activities that are harder and more time-consuming for investors to do themselves,” she added.</p>\n<p><b>There is often no door to knock on</b></p>\n<p>Your robo adviser only knows what you tell it. The simplistic questionnaire you’re required to fill out will on most robo-investing platforms will collect information on your annual income, desired age to retire and the level of risk you’re willing to take on.</p>\n<p>It won’t however know if you just had a child and would like to begin saving for their education down the road or if you recently lost your job.</p>\n<p>“The question then becomes to whom does that person go to for advice and does that platform offer that and if so, to what level of complexity?” said Barse.</p>\n<p>Not all platforms give individualized investment advice and the hybrid models that do offer advice from a human tend to charge higher annual fees.</p>\n<p>Additionally, a robo adviser won’t necessarily “manage your money with tax efficiency at front of mind,” said Roger Ma, a certified financial planner at Lifelaidout, a New York City-based financial advisory group.</p>\n<p>For instance, one common way investors offset the taxes they pay on long-term investments is by selling assets that have accrued losses. Traditional advisers often specialize in constructing portfolios that lead to the most tax-efficient outcomes, said Ma, who is the author of “Work Your Money, Not Your Life”.</p>\n<p>But with robo investing, the trades that are made for you are the same ones that are being made for a slew of other investors who may fall under a different tax-bracket than you.</p>\n<p>On top of that, while robo investing may feel like a simplistic way to get into investing, especially for beginners it can “overcomplicate investing,” Ma said.</p>\n<p>“If you are just looking to dip your toe in and you want to feel like you’re invested in a diversified portfolio, I wouldn’t say definitely don’t do a robo adviser,” he said.</p>\n<p>Don’t rule out investing through a target-date fund that selects a single fund to invest in and adjusts the position over time based on their investment goals, he added.</p>\n<p>But not everyone can tell the difference between robo advice and advice from a human being.
