can afford to reward their shareholders with higher payouts.</p><p>Here are four Singapore blue-chip stocks that are doling out a special dividend.</p><p><b>DBS Group (SGX: D05)</b></p><p>Singapore’s largest bank, DBS Group, is one of the big beneficiaries ofhigher interest rates.</p><p>The lender saw its 2022 net profit hit a new record high of S$8.2 billion when itreported its resultsearly last month.</p><p>In line with the good results, the bank not only upped its quarterly dividend from S$0.36 to S$0.42 but also declared a special dividend of S$0.50.</p><p>DBS reported that its asset quality remained resilient during the fourth quarter of 2022 (4Q 2022), with its non-performing loans ratio dipping to 1.1% from 1.2%.</p><p>Management expects interest rate increases to moderate although it does not expect any cuts this year.</p><p>DBS projects that its loan book will grow by mid-single-digits year on year while fee income should rise by double-digits with China’s reopening.</p><p>The peak net interest margin should also hover close to 2.2% while there are sufficient provisions in place to hedge against any unexpected risks.</p><p><b>City Developments Limited (SGX: C09)</b></p><p>City Developments Limited, or CDL, is a global real estate firm with a network covering 104 locations in 29 countries and regions.</p><p>The group dished out thehighest profit in its historydue to several divestments in 2022 and declared a special dividend of S$0.08 to reward shareholders.</p><p>Together with itsinterim dividendof S$0.12 and a final dividend of S$0.08, the total cash dividend for last year came up to S$0.28, significantly higher than the cash dividend of S$0.12 in 2021.</p><p>Looking ahead, the real estate giant has a Singapore residential development launch pipeline of more than 2,100 units spread out over this year and the next.</p><p>CDL also has ongoing asset redevelopment initiatives for Newport Plaza and Central Mall cum Central Square that will result in a gross floor area uplift.</p><p>Elsewhere, its hotel operations division should continue to enjoy improvement as travel demand booms with the easing of restrictions in most countries.</p><p><b>CapitaLand Investment Limited (SGX: 9CI)</b></p><p>CapitaLand Investment Limited, or CLI, is a real estate investment manager with S$132 billion of assets under management (AUM) and S$88 billion of funds under management (FUM) as of 31 December 2022.</p><p>CLI handed in arobust report cardfor 2022 that saw all its divisions posting year on year growth.</p><p>The group not only declared a cash dividend of S$0.12 but also a special dividend in the form of units of<b>CapitaLand Ascott Trust</b>(SGX: HMN), valued at S$0.059 per share.</p><p>Group CEO Lee Chee Koon is determined for CLI to forge ahead with strategies to enhance both its AUM and FUM, such as the launch of RMB-denominated funds and self-storage fund platforms within Southeast Asia.</p><p>With China’s reopening, the real estate behemoth can resume recycling capital there while the underlying business in the Middle Kingdom also recovers along the way.</p><p>CLI’s Lodging unit is also showing good promise as it chalked up a record year of signings and property openings because the group acquired the Oakwood platform.</p><p><b>Sembcorp Industries Ltd (SGX: U96)</b></p><p>Sembcorp Industries Ltd, or SCI, is an energy and urban solutions provider with a balanced energy portfolio of 16.7 GW and an urban development project portfolio spanning more than 12,000 hectares across Asia.</p><p>The utility giant turned in asparkling set of earningsas its 2022 net profit more than tripled year on year in tandem with higher power prices.</p><p>A special dividend of S$0.04 was declared along with a final dividend of S$0.04, bringing 2022’s full-year dividend to S$0.12.</p><p>SCI is bulking up on its renewables portfolio with gross installed capacity hitting 9.8 GW, just shy of its 2025 target of 10 GW.</p><p>Just last month, the utility player secured a long-term power purchase agreement with a unit of<b>Micron Technology</b>(NASDAQ: MU).</p><p>The 18-year agreement will supply Micron with up of the big beneficiaries ofhigher interest rates.The lender saw its 2022 net profit hit a new record high of S$8.2 billion when itreported its resultsearly last month.In line with the good results, the bank not only upped its quarterly dividend from S$0.36 to S$0.42 but also declared a special dividend of S$0.50.DBS reported that its asset quality remained resilient during the fourth quarter of The table reflects the U.S. stock market back to 1871, courtesy of data provided by Yale University&#39;s finance professor Robert Shiller.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/64984acf0f40a1a5e886ef773747472a\" tg-width=\"939\" tg-height=\"268\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>In other words, the ability to predict the stock market&#39;s five- and 10-year returns goes down when taking interest rates into account.</p><h3>Money illusion</h3><p>These results are so surprising that it&#39;s important to explore why the conventional wisdom is wrong. That wisdom is based on the eminently plausible argument that higher interest rates mean that future years&#39; corporate earnings must be discounted at a higher rate when calculating their present value. While that argument is not wrong, Richard Warr,  a finance professor at North Carolina State University, told me, it&#39;s only half the story.</p><p>The other half of this story is that interest rates tend to be higher when inflation is higher, and average nominal earnings tend to grow faster in higher-inflation environments. Failing to appreciate this other half of the story is a fundamental mistake in economics known as &#34;inflation illusion&#34; -- confusing nominal with real, or inflation-adjusted, values.</p><p>According to research conducted by Warr, inflation&#39;s impact on nominal earnings and the discount rate largely cancel each other out over time. While earnings tend to grow faster when inflation is higher, they must be more heavily discounted when calculating their present value.</p><p>Investors were guilty of inflation illusion when they reacted to the Fed&#39;s latest interest rate announcement by selling stocks.</p><p>None of this means that the bear market shouldn&#39;t continue, or that equities aren&#39;t overvalued. Indeed, by many measures, stocks are still overvalued, despite the much cheaper prices wrought by the bear market. While still down 7.45% over the past year - as measured by the <b>iShares Core S&amp;P U.S. Value ETF</b>(IUSV) - that is still 6% better than the S&amp;P 500.</p><p>The fact is, in times of turbulent, volatile, and weak equity markets, the value sector can add ballast to a portfolio in the same way that the <b>consumer staples</b>(XLP) or <b>utilities</b>(XLU) sectors can (those two are up 0.3% and 9.1% over the past year, respectively).</p><p>So, today let&#39;s take a closer look at the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 Value ETF to see how it has positioned investors for success going forward.</p><p><b>Top-10 Holdings</b></p><p>The top-10 holdings in the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 Value ETFare shown below and equate to only 18.4% of the entire portfolio and is therefore what I consider to be a very well diversified fund:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/668386196af182720e4e27043ac0c821\" tg-width=\"459\" tg-height=\"489\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Vanguard</p><p>The #1 holding is <b>Berkshire Hathaway Class B</b>(BRK.B) with a 3.1% weight. Berkshire is a conservative and well-diversified company whose largest current holding is <b>Apple</b>(AAPL) with a 40.8% weight (a $122.3 billion position). The top-5 holdings in Berkshire are shown below and the entire BRK portfolio can be found here, and is generally defensive in nature.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ca7eaa7f4d3521485451c2e6b2caeb0c\" tg-width=\"564\" tg-height=\"310\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>hedgefollow.com</p><p>Berkshire Hathaway currently has$146.7 billion in cash and short-term investments and is therefore ideally positioned to play offense once the markets turnaround (or tanks).</p><p>In aggregate, typically defensive healthcare stocks like <b>Johnson &amp; Johnson</b>(JNJ), <b>UnitedHealth Group</b>(UNH), and <b>Merck</b>(MRK) equate to 5.6% of the VOOV portfolio. These three stocks yield 2.78%, 1.28%, and 3.2%, respectively. The following chart shows these three stocks&#39; performance versus the S&amp;P 500 over the past year:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ac5aa9fb56240b0eddbc47dc964767ce\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"877\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>JNJdata by YCharts</p><p>As can be seen, all three have significantly outperformed the S&amp;P 500, with UNH being the star performer: +22.5%.</p><p>The #3 and #5 holdings are integrated international major energy companies <b>Exxon</b>(XOM) and <b>Chevron</b>(CVX), with a combined weight of 3.2%. Exxon and Chevron both had monster Q2 earnings reports and generated free-cash-flow of $16.9 billion and $10.6 billion, respectively. Both these companies have global production portfolios that are ideally positioned to benefit from strong oil, natural gas, and LNG pricing.</p><p>Exxon shareholders have arguably benefited from the fact that activist hedge-fund Engine #1 won three seats on Exxon board-of-directors and has, as a result, totally changed Exxon&#39;s structure and strategy going forward. Exxon currently yields 3.68% after raising the quarterly dividend by only a penny last year, while Chevron yields 3.60% after a 6% dividend increase ($0.08/share). Both companies are using the current up-cycle to put in place significant share buyback plans (Exxon&#39;s is $30 billion by the end of 2023, Chevron&#39;s is $15 billion per year).</p><p><b>Verizon</b>(VZ) rounds out the top-10 holdings with a 1.1% weight. The good news here is that VZ yields 6.2%. The bad news is that <b>T-Mobile</b>(TMUS) is eating Verizon&#39;s lunch with a newer and arguably better performing network:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/79f26e57bca7fb4f47b2eec073813dc9\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"826\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>VZdata by YCharts</p><p>From an overall portfolio perspective, the largest allocation of capital are to the HealthCare (16.9%), Financials (14.6%), and Industrials (12.3%) sectors. Financials, in particular, typically do well in a rising rate environment because they can profit of the interest rate spread (i.e. the difference between the rate they can borrow at versus the higher rate they can lend at).</p><p><b>Performance</b></p><p>VOOV&#39;s long-term performance versus the S&amp;P 500 is shown below:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/402388e3e886bf4ddbe7428c7d9c5f97\" tg-width=\"475\" tg-height=\"221\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Vanguard</p><p>Source: Vanguard Fund Comparison Tool</p><p>VOOV&#39;s long-term 10.54% average annual return is quite attractive in a weak market considering its lower risk profile (see below in &#34;Risks&#34; section). However, the long-term returns of the <b>Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF</b>(VOO) are 2.3% higher and, for that reason alone, I advise investors to always own a significantly higher allocation to the VOO fund as compared to a value oriented fund like VOOV.</p><p>The graphic below compares the VOOV to some direct competitors: the <b>Vanguard Value ETF</b>(VTV), the <b>iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF</b>(IWD), and the <b>iShares Core S&amp;P Value ETF</b> over the past year:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/90a466dfcd7514e0687d3c20e5ca0982\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"877\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>VOOVdata by YCharts</p><p>Clearly the VTV ETF is the star of the show in that it is down the least amount. The VTV ETF has a significantly lower expense fee (0.04%) than does the VOOV ETF, a very similar portfolio, and a better 10-year performance track record (11.73%).</p><p><b>Risks</b></p><p>Obviously the VOOV fund is not immune to the negative headwinds from the macro-investment environment discussed earlier - after all, the ETF is still down 6.7% YTD. However, in a challenging market where rising interest rates threaten valuation levels, note that the VOOV ETF&#39;s portfolio trades at a significant discount to the overall S&amp;P 500:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/856d4a543454bb3b4b155948be92bcc1\" tg-width=\"474\" tg-height=\"413\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Vanguard</p><p>Clearly, VOOV&#39;s P/E and price-to-book ratios are significantly lower as compared to the broadS&amp;P 500 as measured by the <b>VanguardS&amp;P 500 ETF</b>. However, also note how - as expected - VOOV&#39;s ROE and EPS growth rates are also significantly lower as compared to the VOO ETF. And this is the trade-off investors make when investing in value versus the overall market and/or growth stocks.</p><p><b>Summary &amp; Conclusion</b></p><p>The VanguardS&amp;P 500 Value ETF is a sleep-well-at-night (&#34;SWAN&#34;) fund that can add ballast to a portfolio in times of weak market performance. However, as shown above, the Vanguard VTV Value ETF appears to be a superior choice with lower fees, better performance, and a similarly defensive portfolio. A company needs to file paperwork with the SEC to express its intentions, and then shareholders must give the company the green light to move forward with the stock split.</p><p><b>What happens when a stock splits?</b></p><p>A stock split may be popular, but that doesn&#39;t mean it&#39;s profitable. A stock split in itself won&#39;t make a company&#39;s market capitalization rise or change its intrinsic value. But it does increase the number of a company&#39;s outstanding shares. You&#39;ll notice more shares of a company stock in your account, but the overall value of your shares won&#39;t change. That&#39;s why a stock split is not a taxable event in itself. It doesn&#39;t leave you with more money in your pockets.</p><p>Let&#39;s dive into Tesla&#39;s stock split. The company is doing a 3-for-1 split. That means investors will receive two extra shares of Tesla for every one share they own.</p><p>If you own five shares of Tesla, you&#39;ll wake up to 15 shares of the company after the stock split. If you own 10 shares of Tesla, you&#39;ll have 30 shares later. If you own fractional shares, you&#39;ll still have a chance to participate in the stock split.
