The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average are up 1.7% and 1.2%, respectively.</p><p>Next, the Chinese government recently expressed a new desire to further support its domestic economy. That helped investors forget about some of their fears about the potential delistings of Chinese companies from U.S. exchanges, and focus more about improving demand in the world’s largest market for new cars and new EVs.</p><p>That factor helps Chinese EV shares the most. NIO (NIO) ADRs are up about 21%. Li Auto (LI) ADRs have gained more than 27% in Wednesday trading, roughly matching XPeng’s gains. But it’s also fair to attribute some of the Tesla gain to the Chinese news, too, as Tesla sells cars in that country.</p><p>What’s more, it’s also probably fair to attribute some of Rivian’s gain to the Chinese news. Rivian doesn’t sell cars in China, but all the EV players are linked, to some extent, by relative valuations. One EV stock going up can drive another EV stock up. The market always has an element of circular logic to it.</p><p>Through all the price changes, Tesla remains the most-valuable EV maker by a factor of almost 10. Second is BYD (1211.Hong Kong), which has a market value of about $93 billion. Those two are the only two EV makers that produce consistent profits.</p><p>The next most-valuable names, in order of descending market capitalization, are: Lucid (LCID); Polestar, which is merging with the SPAC Gores Guggenheim (GGPE); Rivian; NIO; Li Auto; and XPeng. Lucid’s market cap is about $39 billion. XPeng’s is about $23 billion.</p><p>At the beginning of 2022, Rivian was in third place, Lucid was fourth, and the Chinese EV names were all worth more than Polestar. The changing ranking can’t really be explained by EV valuation. Valuations, frankly, are all over the place.</p><p>Tesla, the bellwether, trades for about 10 times estimated sales. BYD, Lucid, Polestar, Rivian, NIO, Li, and XPeng trade for 3 times, 27 times, 11 times, 19 times, 5 times, 3 times, and 7 times, respectively. There isn’t an easy way to divine a pattern in any those multiples. Investors can’t correlate long-term-growth rates or near-term-profit expectations with the numbers.</p><p>Instead, EV stocks have been tossed on a sea of issues. China and the overall stock market are driving Wednesday trading. But EV stocks have also been impacted by rising interest rates, inflation, and parts shortages. In addition, a spike in gas prices, caused in part by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have fueled more interest in EVs and EV stocks.</p><p>Most of the 2022 developments have been negative. The EV stocks Barron’s tracks are down about 37% year to date on average.</p><p>Another small negative impacting the sector in 2022 is changing EV incentives. EV purchase incentives fell, a little, in China beginning in 2022. And U.S. EV buyers are still waiting for President Joe Biden to pass some of his incentives from the Build Back Better infrastructure bill that didn’t make it through Congress.</p><p>There is a lot going on in the EV space. The region is widely regarded as the fastest-growing e-commerce region worldwide, with an e-commerce penetration level of only 10% expected by 2025.</p><p>Mercadolibreissued Q4 2021 results on Feb. 22. Revenuessurged74% year-over-year (YOY)on a currency-neutral basis to $2.1 billion. Yet, due to higher operating expenses and foreign currency losses, its net loss came in at $46.1 million, or a loss of 92 cents per diluted share. In the previous-year quarter, the net loss was $50.6 million. Cash and equivalents ended the period at $2.5 billion.</p><p>Unique active users across the e-commerce platform jumped from 78.7 million to 82.2 million during the quarter.As a result, fintech revenue saw a YOY increase of 70%, accounting for 37% of total revenue. In addition, Total Payment Volume (TPV)on its Mercado Pago payment platform increased to $24 billion, meaning YOY growth of 73%.</p><p>MELI stock hovers around $900, down 32% YTD. Shares are trading at a steep discount at 6.75 times trailing sales, the lowest since 2016. Yet, this didn’t stop GRAB stock from&nbsp;plummeting more than 20%&nbsp;on the day of the merger.</p>\n<p>Since then, investors have continued to give GRAB stock the cold shoulder, with shares falling another 16% to trade at $7.34 at the time of this writing.</p>\n<p>Now, before you write off an investment in Grab Holdings, consider that the company is still in the early innings and let’s consider where GRAB stock could go from here.</p>\n<p><b>What’s Behind Grab’s Cool Reception?</b></p>\n<p>Grab is the largest ride-hailing and delivery company in Southeast Asia, with&nbsp;operations in Singapore,&nbsp;Malaysia, Cambodia,&nbsp;Indonesia, Myanmar,&nbsp;Philippines,&nbsp;Thailand and Vietnam and serving more than 187 million users.</p>\n<p>There are a number of plausible explanations for why GRAB stock has not been well-received by investors.</p>\n<p>For starters, growth estimates for the Southeast Asian region have been lowered recently primarily due to the coronavirus pandemic. In September, the Asian Development Bank&nbsp;dropped its 2021 growth forecast&nbsp;for the region to 3.1% from 4.4% previously.</p>\n<p>Widespread lockdowns in the region due to recurring waves of COVID-19 have hurt demand for Grab’s ride-hailing services and weighed on revenue despite an increase in food-delivery volumes.</p>\n<p>Grab reported its&nbsp;third-quarter results&nbsp;on Nov. 11. Revenue fell 9% year over year to $157 million, with the company citing “a decline in mobility due to the severe lockdowns in Vietnam.” Falling revenue is obviously not something investors want to see, especially from a company that has yet to turn a profit.</p>\n<p>Yet, the company did report a 32% year-over-year increase in gross merchandise value, with the dollar value of transactions from Grab’s services rising to $4.04 billion thanks to strength in the company’s deliveries segment.</p>\n<p><b>There’s Reason for Optimism</b></p>\n<p>The deal to go public through the merger with Altimeter Growth Corp. valued Grab at close to $40 billion, which as I mentioned, was a record. The fact that three weeks later GRAB stock has a market cap of about $27.5 billion tells us that perhaps things got a bit too heated. However, there is reason for optimism.</p>\n<p>The ride-hailing platform has secured the backing of significant players across related industries, including&nbsp;<b>DiDi Global</b>(NYSE:<b><u>DIDI</u></b>),<b>Toyota</b>(NYSE:<b><u>TM</u></b>) and&nbsp;<b>SoftBank’s</b>(OTCMKTS:<b><u>SFTBY</u></b>) Vision Fund.</p>\n<p>Grab Holdings also has some positive catalysts on the horizon. For example, the company recently announced that it&nbsp;will be purchasing&nbsp;<b>Jaya Grocer</b>, a premium supermarket chain in Malaysia.</p>\n<p>This acquisition fits nicely with the ride-hailing and delivery business model the company seeks to expand. Management refers to the model as a “superapp” focus, whereby users can access multiple services in a single, convenient location.</p>\n<p><b>The Bottom Line on GRAB Stock</b></p>\n<p>I can’t say Grab Holdings can immediately turn things around. But its potential in the burgeoning Southeast Asian market means it remains relevant and has a long runway.</p>\n<p>Of the six analysts following GRAB stock, two rate it a “buy” and there are no “sell” ratings,according to&nbsp;<i>The Wall Street Journal</i>. Meanwhile, the consensus price target stands at $12.25, which represents upside of 67% from current levels.</p>\n<p>GRAB stock is very cheap now, so it’s hardly a dangerous speculative play. There’s a good argument to be made for investing now and hoping that the company continues to expand its footprint. Yet, this didn’t stop GRAB stock from plummeting more than 20% on the day of the merger.\nSince then, investors have continued to give GRAB stock the cold shoulder, with shares falling another 16% to trade at $7.34 at the time of this writing.\nNow, before you write off an investment in Grab Holdings, consider that the company is still in the early innings and let’s consider where GRAB stock could go from here.\nWhat’s Behind Grab’s Cool Reception?\nGrab is the largest ride-hailing and delivery company in Southeast Asia, with operations in Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam and serving more than 187 million users.\nThere are a number of plausible explanations for why GRAB stock has not been well-received by investors.\nFor starters, growth estimates for the Southeast Asian region have been lowered recently primarily due to the coronavirus pandemic. In September, the Asian Development Bank dropped its 2021 growth forecast for the region to 3.1% from 4.4% previously.\nWidespread lockdowns in the region due to recurring waves of COVID-19 have hurt demand for Grab’s ride-hailing services and weighed on revenue despite an increase in food-delivery volumes.\nGrab reported its third-quarter results on Nov. 11. Revenue fell 9% year over year to $157 million, with the company citing “a decline in mobility due to the severe lockdowns in Vietnam.” Falling revenue is obviously not something investors want to see, especially from a company that has yet to turn a profit.\nYet, the company did report a 32% year-over-year increase in gross merchandise value, with the dollar value of transactions from Grab’s services rising to $4.04 billion thanks to strength in the company’s deliveries segment.\nThere’s Reason for Optimism\nThe deal to go public through the merger with Altimeter Growth Corp. valued Grab at close to $40 billion, which as I mentioned, was a record. The fact that three weeks later GRAB stock has a market cap of about $27.5 billion tells us that perhaps things got a bit too heated. However, there is reason for optimism.\nThe ride-hailing platform has secured the backing of significant players across related industries, including DiDi Global(NYSE:DIDI),Toyota(NYSE:TM) and SoftBank’s(OTCMKTS:SFTBY) Vision Fund.\nGrab Holdings also has some positive catalysts on the horizon. For example, the company recently announced that it will be purchasing Jaya Grocer, a premium supermarket chain in Malaysia.\nThis acquisition fits nicely with the ride-hailing and delivery business model the company seeks to expand. Management refers to the model as a “superapp” focus, whereby users can access multiple services in a single, convenient location.\nThe Bottom Line on GRAB Stock\nI can’t say Grab Holdings can immediately turn things around. But its potential in the burgeoning Southeast Asian market means it remains relevant and has a long runway.\nOf the six analysts following GRAB stock, two rate it a “buy” and there are no “sell” ratings,according to The Wall Street Journal. Meanwhile, the consensus price target stands at $12.25, which represents upside of 67% from current levels.\nGRAB stock is very cheap now, so it’s hardly a dangerous speculative play. There’s a good argument to be made for investing now and hoping that the company continues to expand its footprint. EV stocks are rising dramatically, by widely varying amounts. Tesla (ticker: TSLA) stock is up 4.3%. A nice gain, but Rivian Automotive (RIVN) stock is up 11.1%. And American depositary receipts of Chinese EV maker XPeng (XPEV) are up more than 26%.</p><p>Two big things are driving EV stocks today. First, it’s a risk-on day for the market. The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average are up 1.7% and 1.2%, respectively.</p><p>Next, the Chinese government recently expressed a new desire to further support its domestic economy. That helped investors forget about some of their fears about the potential delistings of Chinese companies from U.S. exchanges, and focus more about improving demand in the world’s largest market for new cars and new EVs.</p><p>That factor helps Chinese EV shares the most. NIO (NIO) ADRs are up about 21%. Li Auto (LI) ADRs have gained more than 27% in Wednesday trading, roughly matching XPeng’s gains. But it’s also fair to attribute some of the Tesla gain to the Chinese news, too, as Tesla sells cars in that country.</p><p>What’s more, it’s also probably fair to attribute some of Rivian’s gain to the Chinese news. Rivian doesn’t sell cars in China, but all the EV players are linked, to some extent, by relative valuations. One EV stock going up can drive another EV stock up. The market always has an element of circular logic to it.</p><p>Through all the price changes, Tesla remains the most-valuable EV maker by a factor of almost 10. Second is BYD (1211.Hong Kong), which has a market value of about $93 billion. Those two are the only two EV makers that produce consistent profits.</p><p>The next most-valuable names, in order of descending market capitalization, are: Lucid (LCID); Polestar, which is merging with the SPAC Gores Guggenheim (GGPE); Rivian; NIO; Li Auto; and XPeng. Lucid’s market cap is about $39 billion. XPeng’s is about $23 billion.</p><p>At the beginning of 2022, Rivian was in third place, Lucid was fourth, and the Chinese EV names were all worth more than Polestar. The changing ranking can’t really be explained by EV valuation. Valuations, frankly, are all over the place.</p><p>Tesla, the bellwether, trades for about 10 times estimated sales. BYD, Lucid, Polestar, Rivian, NIO, Li, and XPeng trade for 3 times, 27 times, 11 times, 19 times, 5 times, 3 times, and 7 times, respectively. There isn’t an easy way to divine a pattern in any those multiples. Investors can’t correlate long-term-growth rates or near-term-profit expectations with the numbers.</p><p>Instead, EV stocks have been tossed on a sea of issues. China and the overall stock market are driving Wednesday trading. But EV stocks have also been impacted by rising interest rates, inflation, and parts shortages. In addition, a spike in gas prices, caused in part by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have fueled more interest in EVs and EV stocks.</p><p>Most of the 2022 developments have been negative. The EV stocks Barron’s tracks are down about 37% year to date on average.</p><p>Another small negative impacting the sector in 2022 is changing EV incentives. EV purchase incentives fell, a little, in China beginning in 2022. And U.S. EV buyers are still waiting for President Joe Biden to pass some of his incentives from the Build Back Better infrastructure bill that didn’t make it through Congress.</p><p>There is a lot going on in the EV space. Investors have to digest it all and come up with what EV stocks are worth. In September, the Asian Development Bank&nbsp;dropped its 2021 growth forecast&nbsp;for the region to 3.1% from 4.4% previously.</p>\n<p>Widespread lockdowns in the region due to recurring waves of COVID-19 have hurt demand for Grab’s ride-hailing services and weighed on revenue despite an increase in food-delivery volumes.</p>\n<p>Grab reported its&nbsp;third-quarter results&nbsp;on Nov. 11. Revenue fell 9% year over year to $157 million, with the company citing “a decline in mobility due to the severe lockdowns in Vietnam.” Falling revenue is obviously not something investors want to see, especially from a company that has yet to turn a profit.</p>\n<p>Yet, the company did report a 32% year-over-year increase in gross merchandise value, with the dollar value of transactions from Grab’s services rising to $4.04 billion thanks to strength in the company’s deliveries segment.</p>\n<p><b>There’s Reason for Optimism</b></p>\n<p>The deal to go public through the merger with Altimeter Growth Corp. valued Grab at close to $40 billion, which as I mentioned, was a record. The fact that three weeks later GRAB stock has a market cap of about $27.5 billion tells us that perhaps things got a bit too heated. However, there is reason for optimism.</p>\n<p>The ride-hailing platform has secured the backing of significant players across related industries, including&nbsp;<b>DiDi Global</b>(NYSE:<b><u>DIDI</u></b>),<b>Toyota</b>(NYSE:<b><u>TM</u></b>) and&nbsp;<b>SoftBank’s</b>(OTCMKTS:<b><u>SFTBY</u></b>) Vision Fund.</p>\n<p>Grab Holdings also has some positive catalysts on the horizon. For example, the company recently announced that it&nbsp;will be purchasing&nbsp;<b>Jaya Grocer</b>, a premium supermarket chain in Malaysia.</p>\n<p>This acquisition fits nicely with the ride-hailing and delivery business model the company seeks to expand. Management refers to the model as a “superapp” focus, whereby users can access multiple services in a single, convenient location.</p>\n<p><b>The Bottom Line on GRAB Stock</b></p>\n<p>I can’t say Grab Holdings can immediately turn things around. But its potential in the burgeoning Southeast Asian market means it remains relevant and has a long runway.</p>\n<p>Of the six analysts following GRAB stock, two rate it a “buy” and there are no “sell” ratings,according to&nbsp;<i>The Wall Street Journal</i>. Meanwhile, the consensus price target stands at $12.25, which represents upside of 67% from current levels.</p>\n<p>GRAB stock is very cheap now, so it’s hardly a dangerous speculative play.
