Suddenly there’s no in-between and everything is extreme. The days of doing homework and investing in an idea are on hiatus. TakeRoblox(NYSE:RBLX), for example. RBLX stock cannot sit still for more than a few days at a time. It is constantly rallying leaps and bounds, and in both directions.
\n
Source: Miguel Lagoa / Shutterstock.com
\n
In early May it fell into an abyss threatening to set a new all-time low. Then it bounced into a 62% rally without much warning. Thereaction to earningsmay have triggered it, but they overshot on the upside as well. I know this because since the earlier high this month, it has given back 24% and straight down.
\n
This is where knowing how to read charts helps a lot. Fundamentals are still important, but in the face of such whipsaw action we need something extra. Capitulating out of RBLX stock as it fell into this week’s low is counterproductive. That was the breakout level from late May. Often enough when stocks revisit a pivot zone they find support on the way down. There should be buyers lurking below here.
\n
The company fundamentals are solid, asI covered in an April article. It hasn’t been public for long, but it has shown that it can grow its P&L. This is not a cheap stock because it still has a 40x price-to-sales ratio. It won’t take much to disappoint those who buy shares now.
\n
They’ve already given it credit for effectively 40 years worth of its sales. Investors demand perfection when they are paying up this much for the equity. On the other hand, a high price-to-sales ratio is not a reason to shy away from the stock. It’s just a cautionary signal to temper the enthusiasm.
\n
Catch the RBLX Stock Knife With Confidence
\n

\n
Source: Charts by TradingView
\n
Roblox stock is currently a falling machete, but one that I would dare to catch. My method for doing so would be in the options markets, where I can build an appropriately large buffer. I am confident that there will be buyers as it approaches $70 per share. Nevertheless, the indexes are still near all-time highs, so I need more assurances.
\n
Options allow me to leave room for error. For example, investors who sell RBLX October $65 puts can collect more than $4 a piece for them. This is a net credit trade so it doesn’t even need a rally to win. In fact, the stock can fall another 27% and they could still break even.
\n
Given what the Fed said last week, equities should find difficulties rallying into the second half of 2021. The more leeway I can place between current prices and my risk the better.
\n
Resistance to Rally
\n
I usually gain conviction by doing homework. But these days, especially in newer stocks like this, that logic doesn’t always work out. I would avoid buying call options in this environment. First of all, theCBOE Volatility Index(VIX) is still high so all premiums are expensive. Moreover, rallies in RBLX stock are likely to face resistance going into $90 per share.
\n
My preference would be to either take a small position with shares or sell puts in the mean time. This would reduce the sensitivity to time element. This opportunity should be a mere rinse-and-repeat scenario from April. Yet I would still employ proper stop losses just in case. Back then I mentioned that the earnings report could be a catalyst and it was. The stock rallied for 23 days to post a new high.
\n
I can’t promise the same results now but the setup is similar. Delta canceled hundreds of flights over Thanksgiving and Christmas because it didn't have enough pilots ready to fly.\nOver the weekend,American Airlinescanceled more than300 flightsdue to staffing shortages and other issues, and said it planned to trim its schedule through mid-July by about 1% to avoid straining its operations.\nDelta told pilots on Monday that it would add 13 crew schedulers and a supervisor to answer pilot calls and questions.\nAmerican,United Airlines,Spirit Airlinesand other carriers have restarted or plan to resume pilot hiring this year. If anything, the latest wobbles actually strengthened their conviction.
\n
The selloff was “bewildering” and a downright overreaction given the long runway until the first potential rate hike in 2023 and the unreliability of dot plots as a predictor, said Jack Janasiewicz, portfolio manager and strategist at Natixis, which has more than $1 trillion under management.
\n
“This caused a nice quick flush out of some weak hands riding the reflation trade and likely reset positioning to a better place,” he said in an email. “As for the reflation trade, it remains intact. We still find many of the inflation-related worries as transitory which makes us give a more nuanced definition to our outlook: reflation, but not inflation.”
\n
Natixis is sticking with cyclical positions and expects those trades to continue to work, with energy remaining a favorite, Janasiewicz added.
\n
JPMorgan also sees buying opportunities after reflation trades suffered a “technically driven pullback,” strategists including Marko Kolanovic and Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou wrote in a note Monday.
\n
“We expect the trade to resume and see this move as an opportunity to add exposure to cyclical equities and commodities,” they said. “Inflation is likely to continue to realize above both the Fed’s and markets’ expectations, driving bond yields higher and value outperformance.”
\n
Emerging markets are also poised for further outperformance over developed peers, with JPMorgan raising its year-end target for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index to 1,550 from 1,450, implying about a 15% upside from current levels. The S&P 500, which fell for four straight sessions last week, has since rebounded to return to the same level as it was the day before the Fed announcement last Wednesday.
\n
Still, the whipsawing market reactions to the Fed have spurred debate among investors over what to do if reflation trades falter.
\n
Goldman Sachs Group Inc. strategists led by Christian Mueller-Glissmann see a greater focus on short-term rates sensitivity than in the past. Markets are looking to labor and inflation data for clues, as rapid improvements there might bring earlier Fed tightening, according to a note Monday.
\n
“Coupled with slowing growth momentum, this might continue to weigh on risk appetite in the near term, although the repricing across reflationary assets has already been large,” they said.
\n
The 2004 Model
\n
The best yardstick for measuring out a path from here could be found by looking at the market’s performance in 2004, according to Morgan Stanley strategist Andrew Sheets. If anything, the latest wobbles actually strengthened their conviction.\nThe selloff was “bewildering” and a downright overreaction given the long runway until the first potential rate hike in 2023 and the unreliability of dot plots as a predictor, said Jack Janasiewicz, portfolio manager and strategist at Natixis, which has more than $1 trillion under management.\n“This caused a nice quick flush out of some weak hands riding the reflation trade and likely reset positioning to a better place,” he said in an email. “As for the reflation trade, it remains intact. We still find many of the inflation-related worries as transitory which makes us give a more nuanced definition to our outlook: reflation, but not inflation.”\nNatixis is sticking with cyclical positions and expects those trades to continue to work, with energy remaining a favorite, Janasiewicz added.\nJPMorgan also sees buying opportunities after reflation trades suffered a “technically driven pullback,” strategists including Marko Kolanovic and Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou wrote in a note Monday.\n“We expect the trade to resume and see this move as an opportunity to add exposure to cyclical equities and commodities,” they said. “Inflation is likely to continue to realize above both the Fed’s and markets’ expectations, driving bond yields higher and value outperformance.”\nEmerging markets are also poised for further outperformance over developed peers, with JPMorgan raising its year-end target for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index to 1,550 from 1,450, implying about a 15% upside from current levels. The S&P 500, which fell for four straight sessions last week, has since rebounded to return to the same level as it was the day before the Fed announcement last Wednesday.\nStill, the whipsawing market reactions to the Fed have spurred debate among investors over what to do if reflation trades falter.\nGoldman Sachs Group Inc. strategists led by Christian Mueller-Glissmann see a greater focus on short-term rates sensitivity than in the past. Markets are looking to labor and inflation data for clues, as rapid improvements there might bring earlier Fed tightening, according to a note Monday.\n“Coupled with slowing growth momentum, this might continue to weigh on risk appetite in the near term, although the repricing across reflationary assets has already been large,” they said.\nThe 2004 Model\nThe best yardstick for measuring out a path from here could be found by looking at the market’s performance in 2004, according to Morgan Stanley strategist Andrew Sheets. It offers the closest comparison to the current mix of a booming post-pandemic recovery, fiscal easing, high savings, low rates, higher inflation and tighter labor markets.\nAt that time, an extended malaise following the 2001 U.S. recession only troughed in 2003, followed by a surge in equity and credit markets as confidence returned. That means 2004 saw similar valuations in global equities, credit spreads and even volatility as those apparent today, Sheets noted in a report Sunday.\n“In short, 2004 represents a more mid-cycle market after a strong, early-cycle rally,” he said. “It saw similar valuations, and what happened next is similar to some key Morgan Stanley forecasts: a pause in equities within an ongoing bull market, lower default rates but slightly wider spreads, modest dollar strength and more mixed equity leadership.”\nWhile there are some key differences -- 2004 was a U.S. election year, there was no quantitative easing and China and emerging-market dynamics were vastly different -- one key lesson to take away is how quickly the Fed moved from preaching patience at the start of the year to hiking rates by June, pushing target rates up 425 basis points over the next two years.\n“History always seems more orderly in hindsight,” he said. “Things can change.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":258,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":120708881,"gmtCreate":1624335714343,"gmtModify":1703833822807,"author":{"id":"3561691053129238","authorId":"3561691053129238","name":"Luislo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ba084f04bf3abf3da88810a6c2294ed6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561691053129238","authorIdStr":"3561691053129238"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Is the yield curve the only truth?","listText":"Is the yield curve the only truth?","text":"Is the yield curve the only truth?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/120708881","repostId":"1164927223","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":515,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":120703416,"gmtCreate":1624335603035,"gmtModify":1703833820370,"author":{"id":"3561691053129238","authorId":"3561691053129238","name":"Luislo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ba084f04bf3abf3da88810a6c2294ed6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561691053129238","authorIdStr":"3561691053129238"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Is aviation making a comeback?","listText":"Is aviation making a comeback?","text":"Is aviation making a comeback?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/120703416","repostId":"1197896360","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":199,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
