learning), enabling organizations to efficiently analyze both structured and unstructured data. The company's software platform is capable of handling vast amounts of data from diverse sources, enabling clients to extract valuable insights for various applications. With its three main software solutions (Gotham, Foundry, and Apollo), Palantir provides a robust infrastructure for seamless data integration and operation across different environments, catering to both commercial and government entities. To seize opportunities in the growing AI market, Palantir has also introduced its own AI-based platform known as AIP, expanding its product offerings and strengthening its position in the industry. In this report, we analyze Palantir's business model, its market opportunity, financials, current valuation and risks, and then conclude with our strong opinion on investing.

YCharts

Overview:

Founded in 2003, Palantir provides a software platform that leverages data analytics and AI/ML algorithms, allowing organizations to effectively analyze a diverse set of structured and unstructured data with great efficiency. While its initial focus was on serving government accounts, including defense organizations and intelligence units, the company has recently expanded its services to encompass diverse commercial sectors such as finance, healthcare, energy, and transportation. The company's software is utilized for various applications such as counterterrorism, fraud detection, disaster response, supply chain optimization, and healthcare analytics. Palantir's advanced algorithms help its customers extract valuable insights from datasets and identify patterns and trends to make informed predictions. As of Q1 2023, Palantir's software has been adopted by over 60 industries globally, serving a total of 391 customers.

The company generates revenue by offering subscription-based access to its software, which is hosted within its dedicated environment called "Palantir Cloud." The company also provides ongoing operating and maintenance services. Furthermore, it offers software subscriptions and ongoing operating and maintenance services for customers who prefer to host the software within their own environments, referred to as "On-Premises Software". Palantir's portfolio consists of three primary software platforms: Gotham, Foundry, and Apollo. These platforms serve as essential infrastructure, facilitating the smooth integration of customers' data and operations, thereby enabling them to deploy and operate the software in nearly any environment.

Palantir operates through two segments: Government and Commercial, which accounted for 55% and 45%, respectively to the company's total revenues in Q1 2023. In terms of geographical distribution, the majority of its revenue (64%) is generated from the US, followed by the rest of the world (27%) and the UK (9%), as shown in the chart below.

Palantir 10-Q

Driving Platform Stickiness Through Expanding Capabilities and AI/ML Integrations

Palantir has developed three primary software platforms: Gotham, Foundry, and Apollo. Gotham and Foundry help organizations organize and utilize their data effectively, with Gotham being used by defense agencies, intelligence groups, and disaster relief organizations for over a decade. Apollo acts as a control layer for cloud systems, ensuring smooth operation. Palantir is expanding Gotham by incorporating AI improvements for cyberattack stages and targeting specific industries like shipbuilding in Korea. In Q1 2023, Palantir closed its first $1M deal for Apollo and received positive feedback for the Foundry Ontology SDK, a software solution that enables data scientists to connect their models with real-world decisions, streamlining model deployment and facilitating continuous communication for improved decision-making and business impact.

The company has recently introduced its Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP), which integrates existing software platforms with Large Language Models (LLMs) and robust AI tools, enabling real-time interaction and data-driven decision making through a secure AI chatbot. While similar to ChatGPT in terms of generative AI, AIP offers superior data-driven analytical capabilities, a controlled environment, enhanced security, and visually appealing human readable graphs and charts. In a more recent development, Palantir has been granted a contract by the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) to provide technology solutions that enhance enterprise capabilities using AI/ML. This multi-year contract is worth up to $463M.

Palantir Investor Presentation

Palantir has introduced two versions of the Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP): AIP for Defense and AIP for Business, with plans for a phased launch. AIP prioritizes compliance with legal and ethical guidelines when deploying powerful AI tools and Large Language Models (LLMs). It consists of three pillars: AIP Core for smooth deployment across diverse networks, AIP Action Graph for robust security features and governance, and AIP Control Plane for secure digital records of operations. AIP seamlessly integrates with existing platforms like Gotham and Foundry, enabling customers to make intelligent decisions, implement advanced automation, and gain strategic advantages. Palantir aims to deliver value quickly and make a meaningful impact through AIP.

Palantir Website

Leveraging Large & Fast-Growing Big Data Analytics and Generative AI Markets

The global big data analytics market is projected to reach $745B by 2030 (see chart below), growing at a CAGR of 13.5% from 2023 to 2030, driven by the increased data volume due to the rise of IoT (the "Internet of Things"). Industries such as banking, healthcare, retail, agriculture, and telecom/media are generating massive amounts of data through digital solutions. Data discovery and visualization are expected to dominate the market as the need for better data interpretation grows. The recent launch of Palantir's generative AI platform, AIP, has also significantly expanded its Total Addressable Market (TAM). The global Generative AI market is estimated to be worth $14B in 2023 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 34.3% to exceed $110B by 2030. Considering the big data analytics and generative AI market, Palantir's TAM exceeds $300B. With annual revenue of nearly $2B, the company has ample room for substantial growth.

Fortune Business Insights, Acumen Research & Consulting

Expanding Customer Base Amidst Low to Moderate Concentration Risk

In Q1 2023, Palantir added 114 new customers compared to the previous year, consisting of 96 commercial customers and 18 government customers, bringing the total count to 391. This represents a 41% YoY increase from 277 customers in Q1 2022. The main driver of this growth was a solid 52% YoY expansion in commercial customers, growing from 184 to 280 and accounting for nearly 72% of the total customer count.

Palantir Financial Statements

The company has maintained a net dollar-based retention rate of over 100% signifying superior customer satisfaction. In fact, the company's top three customers have consistently contributed 20% of revenue and have maintained an average seven-year business relationship, showcasing loyalty and ongoing partnerships. Additionally, the average revenue per top twenty customers on a TTM basis has also been consistently rising, reflecting the sticky nature of the company's platform.

Palantir Financial Statements

However, as with other high growth technology companies, Palantir is also faced with low to moderate concentration risk. Specifically, one of the company's government customers accounted for 10% of the total revenue in Q1 2023, which poses a notable risk considering the sensitivity of the data handled by the company's platform. As such, issues with a single government customer such as a data breach could create a contagion effect and can potentially impact the entire government customer base, resulting in significant revenue downside. On a positive note, having a significant revenue contribution from government can help ensure stability in cash flows and provide opportunities to secure larger contracts. Additionally, it helps the company sustain growth, even during market downturns.

Declining Stock-Based Compensation Expenses Led First Quarterly Profitability, Signaling Positive Shift

Palantir's substantial Stock Based Compensation (SBC), which it offers to attract top talent, has been a subject of scrutiny for a long time. However, in recent quarters, the company has taken steps to reduce its significant SBC payouts. In fact, the percentage of SBC relative to sales has decreased from 116% in 2020 to 22% in Q1 2023. In dollar-term, SBC expenses declined from $1.3B in 2020 to $115M in Q1 2023. This decline in SBC expenses has played a pivotal role in Palantir's achievement of its first-ever quarterly operating profit on a GAAP basis. In Q1 2023, the company reported a profit of $4.1M, compared to an operating loss of $39.4M in Q1 2022.

Palantir Financial Statements

Additionally, we analyzed Palantir's SBC as a percentage of sales in comparison to other high-growth technology companies. Our analysis revealed that the company's SBC percentage aligns with the industry average of its peers. This indicates that Palantir's SBC expenses are being effectively managed, and as the company scales further, these expenses, even though non-cash, are likely to further decrease.

Quarterly Financial Reports(DDOG) (HUBS) (TEAM) (CRWD) (SNOW) (MDB) (NET)

Promising Revenue and Billing Growth Coupled with Enhanced Profitability

In Q1 2023, revenue increased 18% YoY to $525.2M, driven by improved demand from both government and commercial customers. Revenue from government business grew 20% YoY to $289.1M, supported by rising revenue from US customers which grew 22% YoY to $229.8M. Revenue from commercial business also saw a positive trajectory, with a 15% YoY increase to $236.1M. This growth was fueled by the re-acceleration of the US commercial business, surpassing $100M in revenue for the first time and achieving $107.0M with a strong 26% YoY growth. In Q1 2023, the company witnessed 25% YoY growth in total billings, reaching $613.M, showing strong product demand and successful contract acquisitions along with potential for customer attraction and retention.

Source: Company Filings

As per Alexander C. Karp, Chief Executive Officer & Co-Founder:

"We have achieved an annual growth rate of nearly 30% in our most important market during a period of significant macroeconomic uncertainty and without the benefit of the broader awakening across sectors and industries to the potential of large language models and other forms of generative artificial intelligence. And we anticipate that the development of AIP will mark an even more significant moment in our advance."

On the profitability front, the adjusted gross profit grew 17% YoY to $426.7M on higher revenues. However, the margin fell 20bps YoY to 81.3% on higher hardware and other costs related to new projects. On the operational side, the adjusted operating profit rose 7% YoY to $125M. However, on a margin basis, the adjusted operating margin declined 250bps YoY to 23.8%. This decrease was primarily driven by higher sales and marketing expenses, including elevated payroll costs and increased travel and office-related expenses.

Source: Company Filings

Strong Balance Sheet with Healthy Improvement in Cash Flows

Palantir ended Q1 2023 with $2.9B in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities and has no major debt on its balance sheet, which lends financial stability and indicates that the company has sufficient liquidity to meet its short-term obligations and pursue growth opportunities. This would further help Palantir to take up product portfolio expansion, particularly in a growing AI market, and enhance its competitiveness. In Q1 2023, Cash Flow from Operations ("CFO") increased significantly to $187.4M compared to $35.5M in Q1 2022. This growth can be attributed to the favorable timing of customer payments and vendor payments. Also, adjusted Free Cash Flow grew to $188.9M in Q1 2023 from $29.8M in Q1 2023, led by lower capital expenditure (1% of sales in Q1 2023 vs 3% in Q1 2022) and the achievement of profitability in Q1 2023 compared to a net loss in Q1 2022.

Source: Company Filings

Valuation

Palantir's stock has experienced a remarkable rally, surging nearly 140% year-to-date. This impressive performance can be attributed to the introduction of new product platforms and a heightened focus on AI offerings. Despite this positive momentum, it is worth noting that the stock still remains more than 50% below its peak in 2021.

In terms of valuation, Palantir currently trades at a price-to-sales multiple of 15x on a forward basis. This places the company at a slight premium compared to its peers. However, this premium can be justified due to several factors. In this report, we analyze Palantir's business model, its market opportunity, financials, current valuation and risks, and then conclude with our strong opinion on investing.YChartsOverview:Founded in 2003, Palantir provides a software platform that leverages data analytics and AI/ML algorithms, allowing organizations to effectively analyze a diverse set of structured and unstructured data with great efficiency. The company generates revenue by offering subscription-based access to its software, which is hosted within its dedicated environment called \"Palantir Cloud.\" The company also provides ongoing operating and maintenance services. Furthermore, it offers software subscriptions and ongoing operating and maintenance services for customers who prefer to host the software within their own environments, referred to as \"On-Premises Software\". Palantir's portfolio consists of three primary software platforms: Gotham, Foundry, and Apollo. These platforms serve as essential infrastructure, facilitating the smooth integration of customers' data and operations, thereby enabling them to deploy and operate the software in nearly any environment.Palantir operates through two segments: Government and Commercial, which accounted for 55% and 45%, respectively to the company's total revenues in Q1 2023. In terms of geographical distribution, the majority of its revenue (64%) is generated from the US, followed by the rest of the world (27%) and the UK (9%), as shown in the chart below.Palantir 10-QDriving Platform Stickiness Through Expanding Capabilities and AI/ML IntegrationsPalantir has developed three primary software platforms: Gotham, Foundry, and Apollo. This multi-year contract is worth up to $463M.Palantir Investor PresentationPalantir has introduced two versions of the Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP): AIP for Defense and AIP for Business, with plans for a phased launch. Palantir aims to deliver value quickly and make a meaningful impact through AIP.Palantir WebsiteLeveraging Large & Fast-Growing Big Data Analytics and Generative AI MarketsThe global big data analytics market is projected to reach $745B by 2030 (see chart below), growing at a CAGR of 13.5% from 2023 to 2030, driven by the increased data volume due to the rise of IoT (the \"Internet of Things\"). With annual revenue of nearly $2B, the company has ample room for substantial growth.Fortune Business Insights, Acumen Research & ConsultingExpanding Customer Base Amidst Low to Moderate Concentration RiskIn Q1 2023, Palantir added 114 new customers compared to the previous year, consisting of 96 commercial customers and 18 government customers, bringing the total count to 391. This represents a 41% YoY increase from 277 customers in Q1 2022. The main driver of this growth was a solid 52% YoY expansion in commercial customers, growing from 184 to 280 and accounting for nearly 72% of the total customer count.Palantir Financial StatementsThe company has maintained a net dollar-based retention rate of over 100% signifying superior customer satisfaction. In fact, the company's top three customers have consistently contributed 20% of revenue and have maintained an average seven-year business relationship, showcasing loyalty and ongoing partnerships. Additionally, the average revenue per top twenty customers on a TTM basis has also been consistently rising, reflecting the sticky nature of the company's platform.Palantir Financial StatementsHowever, as with other high growth technology companies, Palantir is also faced with low to moderate concentration risk. Additionally, it helps the company sustain growth, even during market downturns.Declining Stock-Based Compensation Expenses Led First Quarterly Profitability, Signaling Positive ShiftPalantir's substantial Stock Based Compensation (SBC), which it offers to attract top talent, has been a subject of scrutiny for a long time. In Q1 2023, the company reported a profit of $4.1M, compared to an operating loss of $39.4M in Q1 2022.Palantir Financial StatementsAdditionally, we analyzed Palantir's SBC as a percentage of sales in comparison to other high-growth technology companies. Our analysis revealed that the company's SBC percentage aligns with the industry average of its peers. This indicates that Palantir's SBC expenses are being effectively managed, and as the company scales further, these expenses, even though non-cash, are likely to further decrease.Quarterly Financial Reports(DDOG) (HUBS) (TEAM) (CRWD) (SNOW) (MDB) (NET)Promising Revenue and Billing Growth Coupled with Enhanced ProfitabilityIn Q1 2023, revenue increased 18% YoY to $525.2M, driven by improved demand from both government and commercial customers. In Q1 2023, the company witnessed 25% YoY growth in total billings, reaching $613.M, showing strong product demand and successful contract acquisitions along with potential for customer attraction and retention.Source: Company FilingsAs per Alexander C. Karp, Chief Executive Officer & Co-Founder:\"We have achieved an annual growth rate of nearly 30% in our most important market during a period of significant macroeconomic uncertainty and without the benefit of the broader awakening across sectors and industries to the potential of large language models and other forms of generative artificial intelligence. And we anticipate that the development of AIP will mark an even more significant moment in our advance.\"On the profitability front, the adjusted gross profit grew 17% YoY to $426.7M on higher revenues. However, the margin fell 20bps YoY to 81.3% on higher hardware and other costs related to new projects. On the operational side, the adjusted operating profit rose 7% YoY to $125M. However, on a margin basis, the adjusted operating margin declined 250bps YoY to 23.8%. This decrease was primarily driven by higher sales and marketing expenses, including elevated payroll costs and increased travel and office-related expenses.Source: Company FilingsStrong Balance Sheet with Healthy Improvement in Cash FlowsPalantir ended Q1 2023 with $2.9B in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities and has no major debt on its balance sheet, which lends financial stability and indicates that the company has sufficient liquidity to meet its short-term obligations and pursue growth opportunities. This would further help Palantir to take up product portfolio expansion, particularly in a growing AI market, and enhance its competitiveness. In Q1 2023, Cash Flow from Operations (\"CFO\") increased significantly to $187.4M compared to $35.5M in Q1 2022. This growth can be attributed to the favorable timing of customer payments and vendor payments. Also, adjusted Free Cash Flow grew to $188.9M in Q1 2023 from $29.8M in Q1 2023, led by lower capital expenditure (1% of sales in Q1 2023 vs 3% in Q1 2022) and the achievement of profitability in Q1 2023 compared to a net loss in Q1 2022.Source: Company FilingsValuationPalantir's stock has experienced a remarkable rally, surging nearly 140% year-to-date. This impressive performance can be attributed to the introduction of new product platforms and a heightened focus on AI offerings. Despite this positive momentum, it is worth noting that the stock still remains more than 50% below its peak in 2021.In terms of valuation, Palantir currently trades at a price-to-sales multiple of 15x on a forward basis. This places the company at a slight premium compared to its peers. However, this premium can be justified due to several factors. Firstly, Palantir has consistently secured new customers and expanded its offerings among existing customers, indicating its ability to maintain its revenue momentum. Additionally, the company has recently entered the large and rapidly expanding AI market, which presents significant untapped opportunities for expansion.Seeking AlphaRisksIntense competition: Palantir operates in a highly competitive market for data analytics and software solutions, competing with industry leaders such as Snowflake, Splunk (SPLK), IBM (IBM), Salesforce (CRM), Microsoft (MSFT) and Oracle (ORCL). Despite fierce competition, Palantir has been recognized as a leader in AI/ML platforms by Forrester Research in its Q3 2022 report. This represents Palantir's strengths and its ability to provide effective solutions that meet customer needs in a highly competitive environment.Palantir Investor PresentationConclusionPalantir's strong platform capabilities, expanding customer base, and AI-based platform position it for long-term growth in the thriving big data analysis and generative AI market. And the company's solid balance sheet, improving cash flow generation, and zero debt contribute further to its financial stability. Additionally, Palantir's growing commercial customer base and comprehensive capabilities will overtime make the platform more attractive. We view this as a compelling opportunity for patient, long-term investors (we ranked Palantir #8 on our top 10 growth stock list), especially for those who are looking to capitalize on the secular AI tailwind. However, at the end of the day, make sure to invest according to your own personal needs and goals. Palantir is an extremely volatile stock, and absolutely not right for everyone. China Concepts Stocks rose slightly in the pre-market trading.
\n
In the secondary market, there are two types of US funds willing to make investments in China. Thereinto, one of them has liquidated or been gradually liquidating their holdings. According to the daily operations of the Ark Funds, it has been reducing its positions in China Concepts Stocks including Tencent, and has never increased its positions, although the afore-mentioned stocks have rebounded to some extent recently. A more pleasing signal appeared lately is that the Ark Funds has stopped lightening up Chinese stocks.
\n
On July 1st, a total of 10 Chinese stocks listed in the U.S. are covered by the Ark Funds, including 8 China Concept Stocks and 2 Hong Kong stocks traded in U.S. over-the-counter (OTC). Based on the closing price of the day, these 10 stocks totaled $1.8 billion, as shown in the following figure.
\n

\n
About Its Positions
\n
As a fund that is not active enough to invest in Chinese stocks, it is hard to say that the size of $1.8-billion position is small. The largest mutual fund that invests in emerging markets is the Invesco Developing Markets Fund, which has an investment of $15 billion in China, covering China Concepts Stocks, Hong Kong Stocks and A shares. Therefore, Ark's investment in China is not trivial.
\n
The Ark Funds claims to be technology-based, but it seems that the Funds does not fully trust China's technology. By analyzing its holdings on Chinese stocks, the most positions held by the Ark Funds now are stocks of e-commerce which owns vast purchasing power, rather than those of technology companies. Cathie Wood, an American investor as well as the CEO & CIO of Ark Invest, once praised Baidu's driverless technology on TV, while their position in Baidu’s stock is not so large. Then, here comes the new energy vehicles of China. The investment target of the Ark Funds is not the Chinese EV trio including Li Auto, NIO Inc. and XPeng Inc., but NIU Technologies. The electric vehicles produced by Niu Technologies are good sellers in New York, while another three makers have not yet expanded into the United States. Once again, it reflects Cathie Wood's skeptical attitude towards China's \"technology\".
\n
Let’s look into the lightening of the Ark Funds
\n
10 stocks are chosen to analyze their share changes. 5 stocks with the largest positions on July 1 (JD, TCEHY, BEKE, PDD, and BIDU) are shown in Figure 1, totaling $1.5 billion, accounting for about 80%. Another 5 stocks are BABA, NIU, HUYA, BYDDY, and BZ, totaling $300 million, accounting for about 20% (Figure 2). Key dates are marked below.
\n
Figure 1
\n
Figure 2
\n
The Ark Funds cleared all its positions in HUYA on July 13 and 14 (marked in the Figure above). The news of the failed merger between Huya and DouYu was announced on July 12, but the Ark Funds did not substantially lighten up its position on the day, and continued the pace in the past few days.
\n
Another marked date is July 26 (Figure 1). The Chinese education stocks plummeted over 50% on Friday, July 23. On that day, few people realized that a chain reaction had occurred, and Chinese stocks listed in Hong Kong would slump in the following week. The Ark Funds failed to realize it, either. On July 26, the Ark Funds had to lighten up its positions. The top 5 largest positions were all reduced by Ark, with Ke Holdings standing in the breach. This reflects Cathie Wood's suspicion of high-growth companies in China.
\n
The third marked date is July 28, as shown in Figure 2. In this round of turmoil, the Ark Funds only lightened up its positions in the stocks of BOSS Zhipin (Kanzhun Limited), which is also a company with a relatively small market value. In their study,“Bubbles for Fama,”published in the January 2019 issue of the Journal of Financial Economics, they analyzed U.S. stock market history back to 1926 in search of ways to forecast a bubble that was about to burst.

Applying the formula the researchers derive, I calculate there is an 80% chance that the Technology Hardware, Storage & Peripherals index will be 40% lower than today at some point in the next two years. Among some of the better-known firms in this industry are Apple(ticker: AAPL),Seagate Technology(STX), and Western Digital(WDC).

Though no other industries satisfy the researchers’ definition of a bubble, two others come close. They are also in the technology arena: Semiconductors and Semiconductor Equipment, and Software.

Why focus on an industry that may be in a bubble, rather than the market as a whole? Prof. Greenwood toldBarron’sthat he and his fellow researchers learned from their study of the history of bubbles that they “rarely are marketwide” events. Far more common, he said, is for a bubble to manifest in certain pockets of the market even as other sectors remain undervalued.

This was certainly the case at the top ofthe dot-com bubble, the mother of all bubbles. Greenwood reminds us that, even as dot-com stocks soared to outrageous valuations in the late 1990s and early 2000, other sectors of the market—notably value stocks—were either fairly valued or even undervalued. Some of those other sectors actually gained ground during the bear market that accompanied the bursting of the dot-com bubble stocks.

The researchers define a bubble to be any industry whose two-year return is at least 100 percentage points greater than the overall market’s. This is a high standard indeed—among all industries for which they had performance data between 1926 and 2016, just 40 satisfied the definition at any point over this 90-year period.

Not all bubbles burst, of course, and those that do don’t always burst right away. The researchers imposed a strict precondition here as well: Once an industry satisfied their definition of a bubble, they considered it to have burst if, within the subsequent two years, it lost at least 40% of its value. Of the 40 industries that satisfied the researchers’ definition of a bubble, 21—or 53%—burst.

What this means, assuming the future is like the past: There’s a slightly better than one out of two chance that any industry that outperforms the market by 100 percentage points in any two-year period will lose 40% or more over the subsequent two years.

The researchers also studied how the probabilities of a crash changed when they tightened or loosened their definition of a bubble. When they set the criterion to be just 50 percentage points ahead of the market, instead of 100, the odds of a crash fell to just 20%. When they tightened the criterion to 150 percentage points, the probabilities of a crash rose to 80%.

This latter probability is what applies to the Technology Hardware, Storage & Peripherals index. Over the past two years, according to FactSet, it has outperformed the S&P 500 by 151 percentage points.

One is tempted to apply the professors’ formula to individual securities, as I myself have done in the past. In November 2017, for example, I used the formula to argue thatthe odds of Bitcoin crashingwere greater than 80%. It lost 67% over the next 12 months. I used the professors’ formulaonce again in February 2020to argue that the odds of Tesla(TSLA) crashing were 80%. The stock lost 59% over the next six weeks.

Since then, of course,TeslaandBitcoin have skyrocketed, as have any of a number of other highflying assets. Should I once again forecast that there is a high probability of their crashing, I asked Greenwood? He demurred, stressing that further research is needed into the various factors that affect the odds of an individual stock crashing.

Yet he added he believes that not only is the broad stock market overvalued, there are individual pockets of the market that are “incredibly frothy and bubbly.”
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Where the Real Stock Market Bubble Is
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhere the Real Stock Market Bubble Is\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-02-16 09:55 GMT+8 Barrons\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
It is likely that the S&P 500 Technology Hardware, Storage & Peripherals indexis in a bubble at risk of bursting. That’s the conclusion I draw from a study by three Harvard University researchers: ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{".IXIC":"NASDAQ Composite","WDC":"西部数据","STX":"希捷科技","AAPL":"苹果",".SPX":"S&P 500 Index",".DJI":"道琼斯","TSLA":"特斯拉"},"source_url":"https://www.barrons.com/articles/this-is-where-the-real-stock-market-bubble-is-51613388601?mod=hp_LEAD_1","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1185344045","content_text":"It is likely that the S&P 500 Technology Hardware, Storage & Peripherals indexis in a bubble at risk of bursting. That’s the conclusion I draw from a study by three Harvard University researchers: Robin Greenwood, a finance and banking professor who chairs the institution’s Behavioral Finance and Financial Stability project; Andrei Shleifer, an economics professor; and Yang You, a Ph.D. candidate.

In their study,“Bubbles for Fama,”published in the January 2019 issue of the Journal of Financial Economics, they analyzed U.S. stock market history back to 1926 in search of ways to forecast a bubble that was about to burst.Applying the formula the researchers derive, I calculate there is an 80% chance that the Technology Hardware, Storage & Peripherals index will be 40% lower than today at some point in the next two years. Among some of the better-known firms in this industry are Apple(ticker: AAPL),Seagate Technology(STX), and Western Digital(WDC).Though no other industries satisfy the researchers’ definition of a bubble, two others come close. Of the 40 industries that satisfied the researchers’ definition of a bubble, 21—or 53%—burst.What this means, assuming the future is like the past: There’s a slightly better than one out of two chance that any industry that outperforms the market by 100 percentage points in any two-year period will lose 40% or more over the subsequent two years. The researchers also studied how the probabilities of a crash changed when they tightened or loosened their definition of a bubble. When they set the criterion to be just 50 percentage points ahead of the market, instead of 100, the odds of a crash fell to just 20%. When they tightened the criterion to 150 percentage points, the probabilities of a crash rose to 80%.This latter probability is what applies to the Technology Hardware, Storage & Peripherals index. The stock lost 59% over the next six weeks.Since then, of course,TeslaandBitcoin have skyrocketed, as have any of a number of other highflying assets. Should I once again forecast that there is a high probability of their crashing, I asked Greenwood? He demurred, stressing that further research is needed into the various factors that affect the odds of an individual stock crashing.Yet he added he believes that not only is the broad stock market overvalued, there are individual pockets of the market that are “incredibly frothy and bubbly.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":604,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":388352448,"gmtCreate":1613028758484,"gmtModify":1704877519340,"author":{"id":"3561757396404610","authorId":"3561757396404610","name":"IvanTeo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/09ad7baf8f067a94c8d3f2222a521ef8","crmLevel":8,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561757396404610","authorIdStr":"3561757396404610"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Not sure if Pinterest can monetise ","listText":"Not sure if Pinterest can monetise ","text":"Not sure if Pinterest can monetise","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/388352448","repostId":"2110204192","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":374,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":389256273,"gmtCreate":1612780849592,"gmtModify":1704874090032,"author":{"id":"3561757396404610","authorId":"3561757396404610","name":"IvanTeo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/09ad7baf8f067a94c8d3f2222a521ef8","crmLevel":8,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561757396404610","authorIdStr":"3561757396404610"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Looks like a huge day for NASDAQ","listText":"Looks like a huge day for NASDAQ","text":"Looks like a huge day for NASDAQ","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/389256273","repostId":"1163750848","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1163750848","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1612779898,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1163750848?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-02-08 18:24","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Dow Futures, Stimulus, Apple Car, Super Bowl, Dogecoin - 5 Things You Must Know Monday","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1163750848","media":"TheStreet","summary":"Stock futures rise after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen endorses a massive stimulus package; Hyunda","content":"
Stock futures rise after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen endorses a massive stimulus package; Hyundai and Kia say they aren't in talks with Apple to develop an autonomous vehicle; the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win Super Bowl LV.
\n
Here are five things you must know for Monday, Feb. 8:
\n
1. -- Stock Futures Rise as Yellen Pushes for Massive Stimulus Bill
\n
Stock futures suggested Wall Street would begin Monday modestly higher after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen endorsed a massive stimulus package that she said should include checks to Americans making up to around $60,000.
\n
Yellen said full employment could return by 2022if President Joe Biden's proposed $1.9 trillion plan was passed.
