After all, the tech industry as a whole appears to be on the recovery in thestock market today. If anything, the growth story in tech remains the same. This is because tech companies will likely continue to innovate and compete, such is the nature of tech today. Not only would this benefit organizations and investors alike, but it would also accelerate the adoption of new technologies globally. Could this be enough to warrant investors taking advantage of the current weakness in the sector?

Well, like it or not, the world today is heavily reliant on tech. For example, we could look at the personal computer company Dell (NYSE: DELL). Just this week, Dell saw earnings of $2.13 a share, well above consensus projections of $1.61. The company cites strong demand for its desktops and laptops throughout the quarter for this performance. Indeed, the consumer tech industry continues to power on regardless of the state of the world.

Meanwhile, the booming cybersecurity industry is also making headlines today. This is because of Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) latest blog post regarding the infamous SolarWinds (NYSE: SWI) hack. Essentially, Microsoft believes that the Russian hackers responsible have just launched another major cyberattack on over 150 organizations worldwide. As such, the need for tech as a means of defense in this modern age is greater than ever. No doubt, as the importance of tech continues to expand, tech stocks could become a more viable bet for investors. With that in mind, here are five top tech stocks in thestock marketnow.

Best Tech Stocks To Buy [Or Avoid] In June

Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc.(NYSE: SPCE)

Salesforce.com Inc.(NYSE: CRM)

Roku Inc.(NASDAQ: ROKU)

PayPal Holdings Inc.(NASDAQ: PYPL)

Twilio Inc.(NYSE: TWLO)

Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc.

Virgin is a spaceflight company that develops commercial spacecraft. Could this be enough to warrant investors taking advantage of the current weakness in the sector?Well, like it or not, the world today is heavily reliant on tech. For example, we could look at the personal computer company Dell (NYSE: DELL). Just this week, Dell saw earnings of $2.13 a share, well above consensus projections of $1.61. The company cites strong demand for its desktops and laptops throughout the quarter for this performance. Indeed, the consumer tech industry continues to power on regardless of the state of the world.Meanwhile, the booming cybersecurity industry is also making headlines today. Buffett had previously said that inflation “swindles” equity investors, but noted Saturday that it “swindles the bond investor, too. It swindles the person who keeps their cash under their mattress. It swindles almost everybody.”

Buffett and his longtime partner, Vice Chairman Charlie Munger, fielded shareholder questions on a broad range of issues for hours.

Buffett also said that Berkshire had been increasing its stake in Activision Blizzard as part of a merger arbitrage bet that Microsoft’s proposed deal to buy the video game company will close. Additionally, Berkshire revealed it had ramped up its stock bets by more than $51 billion during the first quarter amid the broader market’s downturn.

Buffett also stressed the importance of cash as “new forms of money” like bitcoin pop up.

“The United States government affects that this became exchangeable for lawful money in the United States,” Buffett said, displaying an image of an old $20 bill. “That’s what money is.”

Check out full recap below for more from the two investing legends.

Berkshire bought more than $51 billion of stocks during Q1′s market rout

Berkshire bought more than $51 billion worth of stocks during the first quarter’s market turmoil, including sizable investments in Chevron, HP and Occidental. The buying at the start of the year marked a sharp reversal from 2021 that saw $7.4 billion of net sales in stocks.

The S&P 500 suffered a 5% sell-off in the first quarter, posting its worst quarter since the start of the pandemic. The rout continued in April with the equity benchmark down another 8.8% amid fears of surging inflation and rising rates.

Buffett says Berkshire is “better than the banks”

Warren Buffett has a long history of teasing investment bankers and their institutions – saying that they encourage mergers and spinoffs to reap fees, rather than improve companies.

Today, he noted that Berkshire Hathaway would always be cash-rich, and in times of need, would be “better than the banks” at extending credit lines to companies in need. While Buffett was talking, someone was shouting from the crowd in the CHI Center. It was unclear what the audience member was said.

“Was that a banker screaming?” Buffett joked.

Buffett warns shareholders about “new forms of money” and the importance of cash

Warren Buffett warned shareholders about “new forms of money” as he recalled the financial crisis of 2008 and said Berkshire Hathaway will “always have a lot of cash on hand.”

Buffett did not explicitly identify bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, though he has made headlines for calling bitcoin “rat poison” in the past and has said it has no unique value. Charlie Munger has also spoken with hostility about it.

“The United States government affects that this became exchangeable for lawful money in the United States,” Buffett said, displaying an image of an old $20 bill.

“That’s what money is,” he added. “It may turn out that it becomes worth dramatically less at purchasing power. It can become almost like paper money as it has in many countries. But that when people tell you that they’re reaching [for] new forms of money, this is the only thing that will pay bills.”

Berkshire put money to work after finding ‘little exciting’ in the market

In his annual chairman letter to shareholders in February, Warren Buffett said there is “little that excites us” in the market. But soon after, he put Berkshire’s money to work.

Berkshire at the beginning of March revealed a big stake in oil giant Occidental Petroleum. At the beginning of April, Berkshire announced a major stake in tech hardware stock HP. Berkshire’s first-quarter filing revealed the company significantly increased its bet on Chevron.

“We found some things we prefer to owning Treasury bills,” quipped Berkshire vice chairman and Buffett’s right-hand man Charlie Munger.

Buffett on his massive Occidental investment

Buffett scooped up 14% of oil giant Occidental Petroleum, worth more than $7 billion, in two weeks during March.

He pointed out that the stake was even larger when accounting for the index fund providers who own a huge chunk of the company.

“That’s not investment. You’re not buying from [investors]. I find it just incredible. You couldn’t do that with Berkshire. ... Overwhelmingly, large companies in America, they became poker chips,” Buffett said.

“That enabled us, in a two-week period, to buy 14% of a business that’s been around for decades,” Buffett said. “Imagine trying to [buy] 14% of the farms in this country. 14% of the apartment houses. 14% of the auto dealerships, or just anything, when already 40% were locked up some other place. It defies anything Charlie and I have seen, and we’ve seen a lot.”

The legendary investor said that the short-term volatility earlier this year fueled by “gambling mentality” allowed him to find good long-term opportunities.

Executives of Berkshire’s portfolio companies discuss impact of inflation

Ahead of the shareholder meeting, the executives of several Berkshire portfolio companies told CNBC how inflation was hitting their businesses.

One of those executives was Jim Weber, CEO of Brooks Running.

Weber said it was tough to raise prices for Brooks’ products but that he thinks some of the cost pressures could cool soon.

“We don’t have unlimited pricing power, but we have taken selective price increases where we think we can. But our whole industry is so competitive. It’s a big market place. ... I do believe in the supply chain that costs are going to mediate a bit,” Weber said.

Buffett wants Berkshire to be in a ‘position to operate’ should the economy stop

Buffett said he wants Berkshire Hathaway to be in a “position to operate” should the economy stop.

“We want Berkshire Hathaway to be there and in a position to operate if the economy stops,” Buffett said. “And that can always happen, it can always happen.”

Buffett played a significant role during the Great Recession, providing capital during a pivotal moment to companies such as Bank of America and Goldman Sachs. The move drew criticism from those who disapproved of the support of big banks.

The billionaire investor made those remarks while also praising the Federal Reserve’s role during the 2008 financial crisis and the pandemic.

“The Federal Reserve has not gone,” Buffett said. He added the Fed will “do whatever is necessary. ... That’s what happened in 2008 and 2009, and that’s what happened in 2020, and you’ll hope it happens again next time.”

Buffett says he has "so much trouble" finding businesses to invest in

Warren Buffett said Berkshire Hathaway is open to investing in businesses anywhere, not just in the U.S.

“We have so much trouble finding good ideas that we can’t afford to ignore any,” Buffett said. “But they do have to be sizable.”

Buffett said while he does seek out new investments, he prefers to be approached proactively.

“We’ll pay any price, climb any hills to find businesses, but we actually prefer when they fall into our lap,” Buffett said.

Munger says today’s stock market "almost a mania of speculation"

Munger said today’s stock market has become “almost a mania of speculation.”

His comment alluded to both high frequency algorithmic trading and access new investors have that intensified during the pandemic.

“We have computers with algorithms trading against other computers,” Munger said. “We’ve got people who know nothing about stocks, being advised by stockbrokers who know even less.

“I understand the commission though,” Buffett joked.

After Munger likened the activity to a casino, where people play craps and roulette, Buffett expanded on the comparison.

“People and traders’ poker chips are pulling the handle,” he said. “They’ve got the system set up so that if you want to buy a three-day call on the stock you can do it and they make more money selling you calls than if you buy stock, so they teach you calls. Nobody’s going around selling calls on farms. That’s why markets do crazy things. Occasionally Berkshire gets a chance to do something. It’s not because we’re smarter. … we’re sane, and that’s the main requirement in this business.”

Munger blasts calls for separate Berkshire chairman and CEO

Berkshire Hathaway Vice Chairman Charlie Munger had some stern words in response to a proposal to oust CEO Warren Buffett as chairman.

“It’s the most ridiculous criticism I ever heard,” Munger said.

“It’s like Odysseus would come back from winning the battle of Troy and so forth and some guy would say, ‘I don’t like the way you were holding your spear when you won that battle,’” he added, referencing ancient Greek epic “The Odyssey.”

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System, or CalPERS, the biggest public pension fund in the U.S., earlier this month said it would vote in favor of a shareholder proposal to remove Buffett from his chairman role while remaining CEO. The proposal’s aim stems from concerns about corporate governance with one person holding dual roles.

“Some guy that’s never run any business, doesn’t know anything — I don’t think too much of this activity,” Munger said.

Berkshire’s head of insurance explains how Geico has fallen behind rival Progressive

Berkshire Hathaway Vice Chairman Ajit Jain, who runs all of the conglomerate’s insurance businesses, lamented about how Geico has fallen behind rival Progressive in the car insurance business.

“Each one have their plusses and minuses, but having said that, there’s no question that recently Progressive has done a much better job than Geico … both in terms of margins and in terms of growth,” Jain said.

“There are a number of causes for that, but I think the biggest culprit is as far as Geico is concerned … is telematics,” he added. Telematics refers to putting a device on a car that tracks driving patterns, in exchange for a lower insurance rate.

“Progressive has been on the telematics bandwagon for more than 10 years. Geico, until recently, wasn’t involved in telematics,” Jain said. “It’s a long journey, but the journey has started, and the initial results are promising. It will take a while, but my hope is that in the next year or two, Geico will be positioned to catch up with Progressive.”

Jain’s comments came after Berkshire reported earlier in the day a massive earnings drop in its insurance underwriting business for the first quarter.

Buffett says he has never been "good at timing"

Warren Buffett said he has never figured out how to time the markets.

“We haven’t the faintest idea what the stock market was gonna do when it opens on Monday,” Buffett said in response to an audience question.

“I don’t think we’ve ever made a decision where either one of us has either said or been thinking we should buy or sell based on what the market is going to do, or for that matter, on what the economy’s going to do. We don’t know,” he continued.

The Oracle of Omaha said he often gets misplaced credit for the stock winners he’s picked over the years, pointing out he’s also missed out on some big opportunities as well. Buffett said he failed to make some big purchases in the early days of the pandemic. In a single day in March 2020, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 12.9%,its worst day since 1987.

Instead, Buffett adheres to a value investing strategy, or picking stocks with attractive valuations, instead of focusing on the vagaries of the stock market.

“We have not been good at timing,” Buffett said. “We’ve been reasonably good at figuring out when we were getting enough for our money. And we had no idea when we bought anything, but we always hoped it would the down for a while so we could buy more. ... I mean, that stuff, you could you could learn in fourth grade.”

Munger says "just say no" to putting bitcoin in your retirement account

Charlie Munger is still down on bitcoin.

He responded to an audience member question asking what single stock they would invest in given how high inflation has been rising.

The Berkshire executives didn’t say where they would put their money, but Munger was clear about where he wouldn’t invest: bitcoin.

“When you have your own retirement account, and your friendly adviser suggests you put all the money in into bitcoin, just say no,” he said.

Munger’s answer was a thinly veiled reference tobig news from Fidelity this week, which will now allow employees to putbitcoininto their employee-sponsored retirement accounts.

Munger and Buffett have both long been critics of bitcoin, which has become increasingly attractive to certain investors for its potential as an inflation hedge.

Buffett describes his start to investing when he was 11 years old

A trip to the New York Stock Exchange when he was 9 years old was inspiring for Warren Buffett, who is known to have started investing when he was 11 years old.

“I went to the New York Stock Exchange, I was in awe of it,” Buffett said. “I got very interested in technical analysis and charted stocks and did all kinds of crazy things, did hours and hours and hours and saved money to buy other stocks and tried shorting. I just did everything.”

The investor bought a stock at 11 after spending his childhood reading books on the subject from the library and in his father’s office. He said his approach to investing later changed completely when he was 19 or 20 years old after reading one particular book passage in what he said must have been Benjamin Graham’s “The Intelligent Investor.”

“I looked at this book and I saw one paragraph and it told me I’ve been doing everything wrong. I just had the whole approach wrong,” Buffett said.

Buffett wants to make it clear he’s not the only one picking stocks at Berkshire Hathaway

Warren Buffett wants to make it clear that he’s not the only one at Berkshire Hathaway picking stocks.

“I see headlines in papers just time after time after time that say, ‘Buffett’s buying such and such,’” Buffett said. “I’m not buying such and such. Berkshire Hathaway is buying.”

The investor said a stock pick may have been made by other finance professionals in his organization without Buffett’s ever having heard of it.

“But the headline will attract more people if it says Buffett buying this than if it says Berkshire Hathaway, and we don’t know whether it is the people that work for him, the headline is designed to bring people into the story,” Buffett said.

“The easiest thing to do is basically shut up and not have a bunch of people facing consequences they didn’t ask for in the first place,” he said.

Buffett says inflation ‘swindles almost everybody’

When asked about his previous comments that inflation “swindles” equity investors, Buffett said the damage from rising prices was much broader than that.

“Inflation swindles the bond investor, too. It swindles the person who keeps their cash under their mattress. It swindles almost everybody,” he said.

Buffett pointed out that inflation also raises the amount of capital that companies need to have and that it isn’t as simple as raising prices to maintain inflation-adjusted profits.

The Berkshire Hathaway CEO cautioned against listening to people who claim to be able to predict the path of inflation.

“The question is how much ... and the answer is nobody knows,” Buffett said.

Buffett reiterated that the best protection against the inflation is investing in your own skills.

Buffett says Berkshire now owns 9.5% of Activision Blizzard

Warren Buffett said Berkshire Hathaway has been increasing its stake inActivision Blizzardin a merger arbitrage bet thatMicrosoft’sproposed acquisition of the video game company will close.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, Berkshire first purchased about $1 billion worth of Activision Blizzard stock, in a bet the company was undervalued. Buffett has saidBerkshire “had no prior knowledge”of Microsoft’s plan to buy the company when Berkshire made its initial investment.

In January, Microsoftannounced intentions to buy Activisionfor $95 per share. Its stock closed at $75.60 per share on Friday.

Buffett said he has been buying more shares of Activision since the deal was announced as the stock is trading way below Microsoft’s offer. Buying at these levels will yield a bigger return if the deal closes.

Buffett said Berkshire now owns about 9.5% of Activision. “If we went over 10%, we would file a report,” he said.

“If the deal goes through, we make some money, and if the deal doesn’t go through, who knows what happens,” Buffett said.

“We don’t know what the Justice Department will do, we don’t know what the E.U. will do, we don’t know what 30 other jurisdictions will do. One thing we do know is that Microsoft has the money,” Buffett added.

Buffett: ‘I look at Berkshire as a painting’

The possibilities for Berkshire Hathaway are endless in the eyes of Warren Buffett, who likened the company to a work of art.

“I look at Berkshire as a painting,” Buffett said. “It’s unlimited in size; it’s got an ever-expanding canvas, and I get to paint what I want.”

Buffett did acknowledge that he doesn’t know much about art, but added that “other people look at paintings and they see something, then they’ll see something additional later on, and they really have a different sort of perception in relation to that. To me, Berkshire is a painting, and I get to paint.”

“It’s in my head, and I see different things in it as I go along,” Buffett said. “It’s satisfying.”

Buffett calls Jerome Powell a hero

In addressing a question about inflation, Buffett talked about the massive stimulus during the pandemic as a key reason for the rising prices now.

“You print loads of money, and money is going to be worth less,” Buffett said.

However, he did not criticize the Federal Reserve for its actions to boost money supply and stabilize markets during the health crisis.

“In my book,Jay Powellis a hero. It’s very simple. He did what he had to do,” Buffett said.

Buffett says people are becoming more tribal

Warren Buffett said people are becoming more tribal.

“My general assumption — there’s no way to prove it — but essentially, people are now behaving somewhat more tribal than they have for a long time,” Buffett said.

“It’s fun to participate in, but it can get very dangerous when people say two plus two is five and the other says two plus two is three, you know, and they’re gonna give you those answers,” he continued.

The investor said the country seems as tribal as it appeared during the 1930s when public sentiment was split in the U.S. around Franklin Roosevelt. Buffett said he was raised in a household where he and his siblings weren’t served dessert until they “said something nasty” about Roosevelt.

“I don’t think it’s a good development for society,” Buffett said.

Buffett says he won’t buy bitcoin because ‘it doesn’t produce anything’

Warren Buffettreiterated his skepticism of bitcoin on Saturday, saying he would be unwilling to buy it for even extremely low prices because it produces nothing of value.

“Whether it goes up or down in the next year, or five or 10 years, I don’t know. But the one thing I’m pretty sure of is that it doesn’t produce anything,” Buffett said. “It’s got a magic to it and people have attached magics to lots of things.”

Buffett listed farmland, apartment buildings — and even art — as assets that had more tangible value than bitcoin.

“Assets, to have value, have to deliver something to somebody. And there’s only one currency that’s accepted. You can come up with all kinds of things. We can put up Berkshire coins, put up Berkshire money but in the end, this is money,” he said, holding up a $20 bill. “And there’s no reason in the world why the United States government … is going to let Berkshire money replace theirs.”

Berkshire’s business meeting concludes with shareholder votes

Berkshire’s formal business meeting followed nearly five hours of Q&A with Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger. Shareholders voted on a number of proposals at the meeting.

The proposal that garnered most attention was from the non-profit National Legal and Policy Center. It calls for the company to strip Buffett of his chairman role. Shareholders voted down the proposal backed by CALPERS, the largest U.S. public pension fund.

Brunel Pension requested the board of Berkshire to publish an annual assessment addressing how the company manages physical and transitional climate-related risks. The number of votes against the motion outnumbered the ones for it.

One shareholder also took issue with Berkshire’s climate change initiative. The proposal called for Berkshire to issue a report addressing if and how it intends to measure, disclose, and reduce the GHG emissions associated in alignment with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal, requiring net zero emissions. Shareholders voted it down.

The last proposal asked Berkshire to report to shareholders on the outcomes of their diversity, equity and inclusion efforts by publishing quantitative data on workforce composition and recruitment, retention, and promotion rates of employees by gender, race, and ethnicity. The motion also failed.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Full Recap of Berkshire Hathaway’s Annual Shareholders Meeting Saturday
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nFull Recap of Berkshire Hathaway’s Annual Shareholders Meeting Saturday\n
\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Tiger Newspress
\n
2022-05-01 08:22
\n
\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett on Saturday put fresh money behind Activision and Chevron and doled out sharp criticism against speculation in the market.

Speaking at Berkshire Hathaway’s first in-person annual meeting since 2019, Buffett went so far as to say the market’s turned into a “gambling parlor.”

The Oracle of Omaha also commented on inflation, building on prior remarks he has made.

Buffett had previously said that inflation “swindles” equity investors, but noted Saturday that it “swindles the bond investor, too. It swindles the person who keeps their cash under their mattress. It swindles almost everybody.”Buffett and his longtime partner, Vice Chairman Charlie Munger, fielded shareholder questions on a broad range of issues for hours.Buffett also said that Berkshire had been increasing its stake in Activision Blizzard as part of a merger arbitrage bet that Microsoft’s proposed deal to buy the video game company will close. Additionally, Berkshire revealed it had ramped up its stock bets by more than $51 billion during the first quarter amid the broader market’s downturn.Buffett also stressed the importance of cash as “new forms of money” like bitcoin pop up.“The United States government affects that this became exchangeable for lawful money in the United States,” Buffett said, displaying an image of an old $20 bill. “That’s what money is.”Check out full recap below for more from the two investing legends.Berkshire bought more than $51 billion of stocks during Q1′s market routBerkshire bought more than $51 billion worth of stocks during the first quarter’s market turmoil, including sizable investments in Chevron, HP and Occidental. The buying at the start of the year marked a sharp reversal from 2021 that saw $7.4 billion of net sales in stocks. The S&P 500 suffered a 5% sell-off in the first quarter, posting its worst quarter since the start of the pandemic. The rout continued in April with the equity benchmark down another 8.8% amid fears of surging inflation and rising rates.Buffett says Berkshire is “better than the banks”Warren Buffett has a long history of teasing investment bankers and their institutions – saying that they encourage mergers and spinoffs to reap fees, rather than improve companies.Today, he noted that Berkshire Hathaway would always be cash-rich, and in times of need, would be “better than the banks” at extending credit lines to companies in need. While Buffett was talking, someone was shouting from the crowd in the CHI Center. It was unclear what the audience member was said.“Was that a banker screaming?” Buffett joked.Buffett warns shareholders about “new forms of money” and the importance of cashWarren Buffett warned shareholders about “new forms of money” as he recalled the financial crisis of 2008 and said Berkshire Hathaway will “always have a lot of cash on hand.”Buffett did not explicitly identify bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, though he has made headlines for calling bitcoin “rat poison” in the past and has said it has no unique value. Charlie Munger has also spoken with hostility about it.“The United States government affects that this became exchangeable for lawful money in the United States,” Buffett said, displaying an image of an old $20 bill.“That’s what money is,” he added. “It may turn out that it becomes worth dramatically less at purchasing power. It can become almost like paper money as it has in many countries. But that when people tell you that they’re reaching [for] new forms of money, this is the only thing that will pay bills.”Berkshire put money to work after finding ‘little exciting’ in the marketIn his annual chairman letter to shareholders in February, Warren Buffett said there is “little that excites us” in the market. But soon after, he put Berkshire’s money to work.Berkshire at the beginning of March revealed a big stake in oil giant Occidental Petroleum. At the beginning of April, Berkshire announced a major stake in tech hardware stock HP. Berkshire’s first-quarter filing revealed the company significantly increased its bet on Chevron.“We found some things we prefer to owning Treasury bills,” quipped Berkshire vice chairman and Buffett’s right-hand man Charlie Munger.Buffett on his massive Occidental investmentBuffett scooped up 14% of oil giant Occidental Petroleum, worth more than $7 billion, in two weeks during March. He pointed out that the stake was even larger when accounting for the index fund providers who own a huge chunk of the company.“That’s not investment. You’re not buying from [investors]. I find it just incredible. You couldn’t do that with Berkshire. ... Overwhelmingly, large companies in America, they became poker chips,” Buffett said.“That enabled us, in a two-week period, to buy 14% of a business that’s been around for decades,” Buffett said. “Imagine trying to [buy] 14% of the farms in this country. 14% of the apartment houses. 14% of the auto dealerships, or just anything, when already 40% were locked up some other place. It defies anything Charlie and I have seen, and we’ve seen a lot.”The legendary investor said that the short-term volatility earlier this year fueled by “gambling mentality” allowed him to find good long-term opportunities.Executives of Berkshire’s portfolio companies discuss impact of inflationAhead of the shareholder meeting, the executives of several Berkshire portfolio companies told CNBC how inflation was hitting their businesses. One of those executives was Jim Weber, CEO of Brooks Running.Weber said it was tough to raise prices for Brooks’ products but that he thinks some of the cost pressures could cool soon.“We don’t have unlimited pricing power, but we have taken selective price increases where we think we can. But our whole industry is so competitive. It’s a big market place. ... I do believe in the supply chain that costs are going to mediate a bit,” Weber said.Buffett wants Berkshire to be in a ‘position to operate’ should the economy stopBuffett said he wants Berkshire Hathaway to be in a “position to operate” should the economy stop.“We want Berkshire Hathaway to be there and in a position to operate if the economy stops,” Buffett said. “And that can always happen, it can always happen.”Buffett played a significant role during the Great Recession, providing capital during a pivotal moment to companies such as Bank of America and Goldman Sachs. The move drew criticism from those who disapproved of the support of big banks. The billionaire investor made those remarks while also praising the Federal Reserve’s role during the 2008 financial crisis and the pandemic.“The Federal Reserve has not gone,” Buffett said. He added the Fed will “do whatever is necessary. ... That’s what happened in 2008 and 2009, and that’s what happened in 2020, and you’ll hope it happens again next time.”Buffett says he has \"so much trouble\" finding businesses to invest inWarren Buffett said Berkshire Hathaway is open to investing in businesses anywhere, not just in the U.S.“We have so much trouble finding good ideas that we can’t afford to ignore any,” Buffett said. “But they do have to be sizable.”Buffett said while he does seek out new investments, he prefers to be approached proactively.“We’ll pay any price, climb any hills to find businesses, but we actually prefer when they fall into our lap,” Buffett said.Munger says today’s stock market \"almost a mania of speculation\"Munger said today’s stock market has become “almost a mania of speculation.”His comment alluded to both high frequency algorithmic trading and access new investors have that intensified during the pandemic.“We have computers with algorithms trading against other computers,” Munger said. “We’ve got people who know nothing about stocks, being advised by stockbrokers who know even less.“I understand the commission though,” Buffett joked. After Munger likened the activity to a casino, where people play craps and roulette, Buffett expanded on the comparison.“People and traders’ poker chips are pulling the handle,” he said. … we’re sane, and that’s the main requirement in this business.”Munger blasts calls for separate Berkshire chairman and CEOBerkshire Hathaway Vice Chairman Charlie Munger had some stern words in response to a proposal to oust CEO Warren Buffett as chairman.“It’s the most ridiculous criticism I ever heard,” Munger said.“It’s like Odysseus would come back from winning the battle of Troy and so forth and some guy would say, ‘I don’t like the way you were holding your spear when you won that battle,’” he added, referencing ancient Greek epic “The Odyssey.”The California Public Employees’ Retirement System, or CalPERS, the biggest public pension fund in the U.S., earlier this month said it would vote in favor of a shareholder proposal to remove Buffett from his chairman role while remaining CEO. The proposal’s aim stems from concerns about corporate governance with one person holding dual roles.“Some guy that’s never run any business, doesn’t know anything — I don’t think too much of this activity,” Munger said.Berkshire’s head of insurance explains how Geico has fallen behind rival ProgressiveBerkshire Hathaway Vice Chairman Ajit Jain, who runs all of the conglomerate’s insurance businesses, lamented about how Geico has fallen behind rival Progressive in the car insurance business.“Each one have their plusses and minuses, but having said that, there’s no question that recently Progressive has done a much better job than Geico … both in terms of margins and in terms of growth,” Jain said.“There are a number of causes for that, but I think the biggest culprit is as far as Geico is concerned … is telematics,” he added. Telematics refers to putting a device on a car that tracks driving patterns, in exchange for a lower insurance rate.“Progressive has been on the telematics bandwagon for more than 10 years. Geico, until recently, wasn’t involved in telematics,” Jain said. “It’s a long journey, but the journey has started, and the initial results are promising. It will take a while, but my hope is that in the next year or two, Geico will be positioned to catch up with Progressive.”Jain’s comments came after Berkshire reported earlier in the day a massive earnings drop in its insurance underwriting business for the first quarter.Buffett says he has never been \"good at timing\"Warren Buffett said he has never figured out how to time the markets.“We haven’t the faintest idea what the stock market was gonna do when it opens on Monday,” Buffett said in response to an audience question.“I don’t think we’ve ever made a decision where either one of us has either said or been thinking we should buy or sell based on what the market is going to do, or for that matter, on what the economy’s going to do. We don’t know,” he continued. The Oracle of Omaha said he often gets misplaced credit for the stock winners he’s picked over the years, pointing out he’s also missed out on some big opportunities as well. Buffett said he failed to make some big purchases in the early days of the pandemic. In a single day in March 2020, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 12.9%,its worst day since 1987.Instead, Buffett adheres to a value investing strategy, or picking stocks with attractive valuations, instead of focusing on the vagaries of the stock market.“We have not been good at timing,” Buffett said. “We’ve been reasonably good at figuring out when we were getting enough for our money. And we had no idea when we bought anything, but we always hoped it would the down for a while so we could buy more. ... I mean, that stuff, you could you could learn in fourth grade.”Munger says \"just say no\" to putting bitcoin in your retirement accountCharlie Munger is still down on bitcoin. He responded to an audience member question asking what single stock they would invest in given how high inflation has been rising. The Berkshire executives didn’t say where they would put their money, but Munger was clear about where he wouldn’t invest: bitcoin.“When you have your own retirement account, and your friendly adviser suggests you put all the money in into bitcoin, just say no,” he said.Munger’s answer was a thinly veiled reference tobig news from Fidelity this week, which will now allow employees to putbitcoininto their employee-sponsored retirement accounts.Munger and Buffett have both long been critics of bitcoin, which has become increasingly attractive to certain investors for its potential as an inflation hedge.Buffett describes his start to investing when he was 11 years oldA trip to the New York Stock Exchange when he was 9 years old was inspiring for Warren Buffett, who is known to have started investing when he was 11 years old.“I went to the New York Stock Exchange, I was in awe of it,” Buffett said. “I got very interested in technical analysis and charted stocks and did all kinds of crazy things, did hours and hours and hours and saved money to buy other stocks and tried shorting. I just did everything.”The investor bought a stock at 11 after spending his childhood reading books on the subject from the library and in his father’s office. He said his approach to investing later changed completely when he was 19 or 20 years old after reading one particular book passage in what he said must have been Benjamin Graham’s “The Intelligent Investor.”“I looked at this book and I saw one paragraph and it told me I’ve been doing everything wrong. I just had the whole approach wrong,” Buffett said.Buffett wants to make it clear he’s not the only one picking stocks at Berkshire HathawayWarren Buffett wants to make it clear that he’s not the only one at Berkshire Hathaway picking stocks.“I see headlines in papers just time after time after time that say, ‘Buffett’s buying such and such,’” Buffett said. “I’m not buying such and such. Berkshire Hathaway is buying.”The investor said a stock pick may have been made by other finance professionals in his organization without Buffett’s ever having heard of it.“But the headline will attract more people if it says Buffett buying this than if it says Berkshire Hathaway, and we don’t know whether it is the people that work for him, the headline is designed to bring people into the story,” Buffett said.“The easiest thing to do is basically shut up and not have a bunch of people facing consequences they didn’t ask for in the first place,” he said.Buffett says inflation ‘swindles almost everybody’When asked about his previous comments that inflation “swindles” equity investors, Buffett said the damage from rising prices was much broader than that.“Inflation swindles the bond investor, too. It swindles the person who keeps their cash under their mattress. It swindles almost everybody,” he said.Buffett pointed out that inflation also raises the amount of capital that companies need to have and that it isn’t as simple as raising prices to maintain inflation-adjusted profits. The Berkshire Hathaway CEO cautioned against listening to people who claim to be able to predict the path of inflation.“The question is how much ... and the answer is nobody knows,” Buffett said.Buffett reiterated that the best protection against the inflation is investing in your own skills.Buffett says Berkshire now owns 9.5% of Activision BlizzardWarren Buffett said Berkshire Hathaway has been increasing its stake inActivision Blizzardin a merger arbitrage bet thatMicrosoft’sproposed acquisition of the video game company will close. Its stock closed at $75.60 per share on Friday.Buffett said he has been buying more shares of Activision since the deal was announced as the stock is trading way below Microsoft’s offer. Buying at these levels will yield a bigger return if the deal closes.Buffett said Berkshire now owns about 9.5% of Activision. “If we went over 10%, we would file a report,” he said.“If the deal goes through, we make some money, and if the deal doesn’t go through, who knows what happens,” Buffett said.“We don’t know what the Justice Department will do, we don’t know what the E.U. will do, we don’t know what 30 other jurisdictions will do. One thing we do know is that Microsoft has the money,” Buffett added.Buffett: ‘I look at Berkshire as a painting’The possibilities for Berkshire Hathaway are endless in the eyes of Warren Buffett, who likened the company to a work of art.“I look at Berkshire as a painting,” Buffett said. “It’s unlimited in size; it’s got an ever-expanding canvas, and I get to paint what I want.”Buffett did acknowledge that he doesn’t know much about art, but added that “other people look at paintings and they see something, then they’ll see something additional later on, and they really have a different sort of perception in relation to that. To me, Berkshire is a painting, and I get to paint.”“It’s in my head, and I see different things in it as I go along,” Buffett said. “It’s satisfying.”Buffett calls Jerome Powell a heroIn addressing a question about inflation, Buffett talked about the massive stimulus during the pandemic as a key reason for the rising prices now.“You print loads of money, and money is going to be worth less,” Buffett said. However, he did not criticize the Federal Reserve for its actions to boost money supply and stabilize markets during the health crisis.“In my book,Jay Powellis a hero. It’s very simple. He did what he had to do,” Buffett said.Buffett says people are becoming more tribalWarren Buffett said people are becoming more tribal.“My general assumption — there’s no way to prove it — but essentially, people are now behaving somewhat more tribal than they have for a long time,” Buffett said.“It’s fun to participate in, but it can get very dangerous when people say two plus two is five and the other says two plus two is three, you know, and they’re gonna give you those answers,” he continued. The investor said the country seems as tribal as it appeared during the 1930s when public sentiment was split in the U.S. around Franklin Roosevelt. Buffett said he was raised in a household where he and his siblings weren’t served dessert until they “said something nasty” about Roosevelt.“I don’t think it’s a good development for society,” Buffett said.Buffett says he won’t buy bitcoin because ‘it doesn’t produce anything’Warren Buffettreiterated his skepticism of bitcoin on Saturday, saying he would be unwilling to buy it for even extremely low prices because it produces nothing of value.“Whether it goes up or down in the next year, or five or 10 years, I don’t know. But the one thing I’m pretty sure of is that it doesn’t produce anything,” Buffett said. “It’s got a magic to it and people have attached magics to lots of things.”Buffett listed farmland, apartment buildings — and even art — as assets that had more tangible value than bitcoin.“Assets, to have value, have to deliver something to somebody. And there’s only one currency that’s accepted. You can come up with all kinds of things. We can put up Berkshire coins, put up Berkshire money but in the end, this is money,” he said, holding up a $20 bill. “And there’s no reason in the world why the United States government … is going to let Berkshire money replace theirs.”Berkshire’s business meeting concludes with shareholder votesBerkshire’s formal business meeting followed nearly five hours of Q&A with Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger. Shareholders voted on a number of proposals at the meeting. The proposal that garnered most attention was from the non-profit National Legal and Policy Center. It calls for the company to strip Buffett of his chairman role. Shareholders voted down the proposal backed by CALPERS, the largest U.S. public pension fund.Brunel Pension requested the board of Berkshire to publish an annual assessment addressing how the company manages physical and transitional climate-related risks. The number of votes against the motion outnumbered the ones for it.One shareholder also took issue with Berkshire’s climate change initiative. The motion also failed.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":709,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":805941143,"gmtCreate":1627857105282,"gmtModify":1703496485556,"author":{"id":"3561964707303823","authorId":"3561964707303823","name":"Happyfish","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5083e727dd5928aedd9d371dffbfd8bc","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561964707303823","authorIdStr":"3561964707303823"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM)$It gonna be alright..","listText":"$Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM)$It gonna be alright..","text":"$Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM)$It gonna be alright..","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6491eeffb5f474f1d5665ee7794fe674","width":"1284","height":"2223"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":1,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/805941143","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":122,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":186554636,"gmtCreate":1623514014225,"gmtModify":1704205374895,"author":{"id":"3561964707303823","authorId":"3561964707303823","name":"Happyfish","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5083e727dd5928aedd9d371dffbfd8bc","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561964707303823","authorIdStr":"3561964707303823"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Pfizer benefits from vaccine and a high yield stock","listText":"Pfizer benefits from vaccine and a high yield stock","text":"Pfizer benefits from vaccine and a high yield stock","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/186554636","repostId":"2142788118","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2142788118","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1623508200,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2142788118?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-12 22:30","market":"us","language":"en","title":"4 High-Yield Dividend Stocks to Watch","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2142788118","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"You don't have to settle for tiny yields today.","content":"
As of early June, an investor can earn roughly a 1.4% annual dividend yield by simply owning a market index fund that tracks the S&P 500. That's a historically low rate -- mainly thanks to the huge rally that investors have seen in the past year.
\n
But many individual stocks are much more generous with their payouts. Let's look at a few attractive dividend-paying stocks that deliver at least twice the market's average yield. Read on to see why PepsiCo (NASDAQ:PEP), Hasbro (NASDAQ:HAS), IBM (NYSE:IBM), and Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) all deserve a spot on your income watchlist.
\n

\n
\n
1. PepsiCo
\n
Pepsi is just a year away from reaching Dividend King status, which will apply after it raises its dividend for a 50th consecutive year in 2022. But income investors don't have to wait until then to own this diversified consumer foods giant.
\n
Pepsi's deep portfolio of snacks helped it post solid growth in 2020 despite pandemic-related demand slumps in the soda industry. Wall Street is worried about a modest profitability drop ahead as the company invests more in growth niches like energy drinks. But Pepsi is playing the long game, and cash it spends upgrading its supply chain should pay off for shareholders over time.
\n
2. IBM
\n
IBM boasts some attractive dividend metrics. It yields over 4%, and the IT giant has also raised its dividend in each of the last 25 years.
\n
There are some notable risks to be aware of, though. IBM is executing a spin-off right now that might threaten its overall payout. Sales growth has been hard to find recently, too, with revenue falling 2% in early 2021 after accounting for currency exchange shifts.
\n
Still, income investors will enjoy IBM's gushing cash flow and its large, stable business. You might be happy to collect an above-average dividend while waiting for big bets in areas like cloud services to deliver faster sales growth in the years to come.
\n
3. Pfizer
\n
Despite its central role in ending the COVID-19 pandemic, Pfizer stock has trailed the broader market over the past year. That situation has helped push its yield above 4%, though, in a welcome development for dividend fans.
\n
The biotech giant recently raised its growth outlook after sales jumped 42% in the first quarter. Besides its COVID-19 vaccine, which will require several more treatments over the next few years, other promising drugs include blood clot-fighting Eliquis, which grew sales by over 30% in early 2021.
\n
Sure, Pfizer isn't likely to see a repeat approaching anything close to the $26 billion it is expecting to book for the COVID-19 vaccine this year. But this dividend stock still has a lot to offer investors who want exposure to the biotech world.
\n
4. Hasbro
\n
There's plenty of room to grow in the toy niche -- if you're a dominant global player, that is. Hasbro has been cashing in on its leading position for years, through its mix of company-owned brands like Monopoly and Nerf and exclusive partnerships with giants like Disney. Growth in these areas allowed sales to rise 1% last quarter despite a 34% COVID-19-related slump in its TV division.
\n
Wall Street has acknowledged this good news by sending the stock higher over the past year. That's a historically low rate -- mainly thanks to the huge rally that investors have seen in the past year.\nBut many individual stocks are much more generous with their payouts. Let's look at a few attractive dividend-paying stocks that deliver at least twice the market's average yield. Read on to see why PepsiCo (NASDAQ:PEP), Hasbro (NASDAQ:HAS), IBM (NYSE:IBM), and Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) all deserve a spot on your income watchlist.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. PepsiCo\nPepsi is just a year away from reaching Dividend King status, which will apply after it raises its dividend for a 50th consecutive year in 2022. But income investors don't have to wait until then to own this diversified consumer foods giant.\nPepsi's deep portfolio of snacks helped it post solid growth in 2020 despite pandemic-related demand slumps in the soda industry. Wall Street is worried about a modest profitability drop ahead as the company invests more in growth niches like energy drinks. But Pepsi is playing the long game, and cash it spends upgrading its supply chain should pay off for shareholders over time.\n2. IBM\nIBM boasts some attractive dividend metrics. It yields over 4%, and the IT giant has also raised its dividend in each of the last 25 years.\nThere are some notable risks to be aware of, though. IBM is executing a spin-off right now that might threaten its overall payout. Sales growth has been hard to find recently, too, with revenue falling 2% in early 2021 after accounting for currency exchange shifts.\nStill, income investors will enjoy IBM's gushing cash flow and its large, stable business. You might be happy to collect an above-average dividend while waiting for big bets in areas like cloud services to deliver faster sales growth in the years to come.\n3. Pfizer\nDespite its central role in ending the COVID-19 pandemic, Pfizer stock has trailed the broader market over the past year. That situation has helped push its yield above 4%, though, in a welcome development for dividend fans.\nThe biotech giant recently raised its growth outlook after sales jumped 42% in the first quarter. Besides its COVID-19 vaccine, which will require several more treatments over the next few years, other promising drugs include blood clot-fighting Eliquis, which grew sales by over 30% in early 2021.\nSure, Pfizer isn't likely to see a repeat approaching anything close to the $26 billion it is expecting to book for the COVID-19 vaccine this year. But this dividend stock still has a lot to offer investors who want exposure to the biotech world.\n4. Hasbro\nThere's plenty of room to grow in the toy niche -- if you're a dominant global player, that is. Hasbro has been cashing in on its leading position for years, through its mix of company-owned brands like Monopoly and Nerf and exclusive partnerships with giants like Disney. Growth in these areas allowed sales to rise 1% last quarter despite a 34% COVID-19-related slump in its TV division.\nWall Street has acknowledged this good news by sending the stock higher over the past year. But investors can still get an almost 3% yield by owning its shares.\nIn mid-2021, prices are rising for many things, including stocks. But investors can still find attractive businesses to own that also happen to pay generous dividends. The camera on the front will likely be used for video calls, while the rear camera can be detached to capture photos and videos for Facebook's family of apps.
\n
Facebook is also reportedly in talks with companies to develop accessories for attaching the camera to backpacks and other objects. Previous rumors regarding the watch suggested it will sport health-tracking features, run on a stand-alone cellular connection, and use a custom version of the Android operating system. Could this long-rumored device help Facebook challenge Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) in the smartwatch market?
\n
Why is Facebook developing a smartwatch?
\n
Facebook generated 97% of its revenue from ads last quarter. The remaining 3% came from its \"other\" businesses, which include its Oculus virtual reality (VR) headsets and Portal smart screens. It might initially seem odd for Facebook to add a smartwatch to that lineup, but it would actually complement its previous hardware strategies.
\n
Facebook's strongest hardware business is its lineup of Oculus VR headsets. It could ship at least three million Oculus Quest 2 headsets this year, according to SuperData. That would make the stand-alone VR headset, which doesn't require a PC or phone, the clear leader of its niche market.
\n
Looking beyond VR devices, Facebook is developing augmented reality (AR) glasses that will use similar controls as its Oculus headsets. It also acquired CTRL-Labs, which is developing a wristband that can use brain signals to control computers, in late 2019. In theory, CTRL-Labs' technology could eventually enable users to control VR and AR devices with \"mind-reading\" wristbands instead of controllers in the future.
\n
Meanwhile, Facebook's Portal devices haven't gained much momentum against Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) or Alphabet's (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) Google in the smart screen market. That failure likely dashed Facebook's hopes of expanding its social networking platforms beyond PCs and phones and into connected homes.
\n
When you put all those pieces together, you'll realize Facebook's smartwatch could be used to enhance control of its VR and AR devices, or to expand its social networks into the Internet of Things (IoT) and perhaps succeed where the Portal failed. Facebook could also eventually upgrade its watches with CTRL-Labs' technologies and enable users to control other IoT devices with their minds.
\n
But let's not get ahead of ourselves... yet
\n
Facebook has reportedly spent about $1 billion on the development of its smartwatch over the past few years, but it only initially plans to ship volumes in the low six figures.
\n
That would make Facebook a tiny smartwatch maker compared to Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), which grew its Apple Watch shipments 19% to 33.9 million in 2020, according to Counterpoint Research. Apple ended the year with a whopping 40% share of the global smartwatch market.
\n
Facebook likely realizes its smartwatch will face the same three problems that plagued the Portal: a deep distrust of Facebook's brand, privacy concerns, and its late arrival into a saturated market. Google also encountered similar criticisms after its recent takeover of Fitbit.
\n
Facebook reportedly plans to launch its smartwatch next summer for about $400. But a lot could happen within the next year, and new smartwatches -- including a new version of the Apple Watch -- could easily steal Facebook's thunder. A smartwatch with two cameras could also be considered complicated and redundant, especially when smartphones and action cameras serve the same purposes.
\n
The key takeaways
\n
The global smartwatch market could still grow from $59 billion this year to nearly $100 billion in 2025, according to Research and Markets. That's great news for Apple, but it also suggests the market might still be big enough for newcomers like Facebook to gain a foothold.
\n
But investors should take all these rumors with a grain of salt until Facebook actually makes an official announcement. Even if Facebook's smartwatch fares better than the Portal, it probably won't generate a meaningful percentage of its revenue or reduce its overall dependence on ads.
\n
Instead, it should be considered a potential expansion of its ecosystem beyond PCs and phones, which might just complement its ongoing push into the virtual and augmented reality markets.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Facebook's Hardware Business Is Creeping Into Apple's Backyard
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nFacebook's Hardware Business Is Creeping Into Apple's Backyard\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-16 23:25 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) could be developing a smartwatch with two cameras, according to The Verge. (NYSE: PFE) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved PREVNAR 20™ (Pneumococcal 20-valent Conjugate Vaccine) for the prevention of invasive disease and pneumonia caused by the 20 Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) serotypes in the vaccine in adults ages 18 years and older. Following today’s FDA approval, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is expected to meet in October to discuss and update recommendations on the safe and appropriate use of pneumococcal vaccines in adults.

PREVNAR 20 includes capsular polysaccharide conjugates for the 13 serotypes (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F and 23F) already included in Prevnar 13® (Pneumococcal 13-valent Conjugate Vaccine [Diphtheria CRM197 Protein]). The vaccine also contains capsular polysaccharide conjugates for seven additional serotypes (8, 10A, 11A, 12F, 15B, 22F and 33F) that cause invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD),8,9,10,11,12 and have been associated with high case-fatality rates,13,14,15,16 antibiotic resistance,4,17,18 and/or meningitis.19,20

“Today’s approval of PREVNAR 20 marks a significant step forward in our ongoing fight to help address the burden of pneumococcal disease, including pneumonia in adults, and broadens global protection against more disease-causing serotypes than any other pneumococcal conjugate vaccines,” said Kathrin U. Jansen, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Head of Vaccine Research & Development, Pfizer. “With a single injection, PREVNAR 20 provides adults with strong and meaningful protection against serotypes responsible for the majority of circulating pneumococcal disease around the world.”

In the United States, more than half of all cases of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) – which include bacteremia and meningitis – in adults ages 65 or older are due to the 20 serotypes in PREVNAR 20.21 In the United States, these 20 serotypes are estimated to cause up to 250,000 cases of IPD (including bacteremia and meningitis) and community-acquired pneumonia and more than 10,000 deaths in adults ages 18 or older.22 Overall, the seven additional serotypes in PREVNAR 20 account for approximately 40 percent of all pneumococcal disease cases and deaths in the U.S.23

“Adult vaccinations play a pivotal role in helping protect our health and wellness, especially as we age and our immune systems begin to naturally weaken,” said Jane Barratt, Ph.D., Secretary General, International Federation on Ageing (IFA). “We are delighted with today’s approval as it addresses a critical need to continually expand coverage to meet the changing burden of disease. We encourage all adults to speak with their healthcare professionals about vaccinations.”

The FDA’s decision is based on evidence from Pfizer’s clinical program in adults, including Phase 1 and 2 trials, and three Phase 3 trials (NCT03760146, NCT03828617, and NCT03835975) describing the safety and evaluating the immunogenicity of the vaccine. More than 6,000 adult subjects 18 years and older participated in the three Phase 3 trials, including adults 65 years of age and older, vaccine-naïve adults, and adults with prior pneumococcal vaccination.23,24

“PREVNAR 20 builds on Pfizer’s legacy of more than two decades of experience in developing and supplying innovative pneumococcal conjugate vaccines that have had a tangible impact on global disease burden,” said Nanette Cocero, Ph.D., Global President of Pfizer Vaccines. “We are thrilled with this approval as it furthers our mission to expand protection against disease-causing bacteria serotypes to help prevent potentially serious respiratory infections like pneumococcal pneumonia throughout the year.”

About 20-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Regulatory Review

On September 20, 2018, Pfizer announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation for PREVNAR 20 for the prevention of invasive disease and pneumonia in adults age 18 years or older. Breakthrough Therapy Designation is designed to expedite the development and review of drugs and vaccines that are intended to treat or prevent serious conditions and preliminary clinical evidence indicates that the drug or vaccine may demonstrate substantial improvement over available therapy on a clinically significant endpoint(s).25 Drugs and vaccines that receive Breakthrough Therapy Designation are eligible for all features of the FDA’s Fast Track designation, which may include more frequent communication with the FDA about the drug’s development plan and eligibility for Accelerated Approval and Priority Review, if relevant criteria are met.26

The FDA previously granted Fast Track designation for PREVNAR 20 in September 2017 for use in adults aged 18 years or older.27 The FDA’s Fast Track approach is a process designed to facilitate the development and expedite the review of new drugs and vaccines intended to treat or prevent serious conditions and address an unmet medical need.25

On February 26, 2021, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) accepted for review Pfizer’s Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) for the 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine candidate, as submitted for the prevention of invasive disease and pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae serotypes in the vaccine in adults ages 18 years and older. The formal review process by the EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) currently is ongoing.

INDICATIONS FOR PREVNAR 20™

PREVNAR 20™ is a vaccine indicated for active immunization for the prevention of pneumonia and invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 8, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 18C, 19A, 19F, 22F, 23F, and 33F in adults 18 years of age and older

The indication for preventing pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae serotypes 8, 10A, 11A, 12F, 15B, 22F, and 33F is approved based on immune responses. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is expected to meet in October to discuss and update recommendations on the safe and appropriate use of pneumococcal vaccines in adults.PREVNAR 20 includes capsular polysaccharide conjugates for the 13 serotypes (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F and 23F) already included in Prevnar 13® (Pneumococcal 13-valent Conjugate Vaccine [Diphtheria CRM197 Protein]). The vaccine also contains capsular polysaccharide conjugates for seven additional serotypes (8, 10A, 11A, 12F, 15B, 22F and 33F) that cause invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD),8,9,10,11,12 and have been associated with high case-fatality rates,13,14,15,16 antibiotic resistance,4,17,18 and/or meningitis.19,20“Today’s approval of PREVNAR 20 marks a significant step forward in our ongoing fight to help address the burden of pneumococcal disease, including pneumonia in adults, and broadens global protection against more disease-causing serotypes than any other pneumococcal conjugate vaccines,” said Kathrin U. Jansen, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Head of Vaccine Research & Development, Pfizer. “With a single injection, PREVNAR 20 provides adults with strong and meaningful protection against serotypes responsible for the majority of circulating pneumococcal disease around the world.”In the United States, more than half of all cases of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) – which include bacteremia and meningitis – in adults ages 65 or older are due to the 20 serotypes in PREVNAR 20.21 In the United States, these 20 serotypes are estimated to cause up to 250,000 cases of IPD (including bacteremia and meningitis) and community-acquired pneumonia and more than 10,000 deaths in adults ages 18 or older.22 Overall, the seven additional serotypes in PREVNAR 20 account for approximately 40 percent of all pneumococcal disease cases and deaths in the U.S.23“Adult vaccinations play a pivotal role in helping protect our health and wellness, especially as we age and our immune systems begin to naturally weaken,” said Jane Barratt, Ph.D., Secretary General, International Federation on Ageing (IFA). “We are delighted with today’s approval as it addresses a critical need to continually expand coverage to meet the changing burden of disease. We encourage all adults to speak with their healthcare professionals about vaccinations.”The FDA’s decision is based on evidence from Pfizer’s clinical program in adults, including Phase 1 and 2 trials, and three Phase 3 trials (NCT03760146, NCT03828617, and NCT03835975) describing the safety and evaluating the immunogenicity of the vaccine. More than 6,000 adult subjects 18 years and older participated in the three Phase 3 trials, including adults 65 years of age and older, vaccine-naïve adults, and adults with prior pneumococcal vaccination.23,24“PREVNAR 20 builds on Pfizer’s legacy of more than two decades of experience in developing and supplying innovative pneumococcal conjugate vaccines that have had a tangible impact on global disease burden,” said Nanette Cocero, Ph.D., Global President of Pfizer Vaccines. “We are thrilled with this approval as it furthers our mission to expand protection against disease-causing bacteria serotypes to help prevent potentially serious respiratory infections like pneumococcal pneumonia throughout the year.”About 20-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Regulatory ReviewOn September 20, 2018, Pfizer announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation for PREVNAR 20 for the prevention of invasive disease and pneumonia in adults age 18 years or older. Breakthrough Therapy Designation is designed to expedite the development and review of drugs and vaccines that are intended to treat or prevent serious conditions and preliminary clinical evidence indicates that the drug or vaccine may demonstrate substantial improvement over available therapy on a clinically significant endpoint(s).25 Drugs and vaccines that receive Breakthrough Therapy Designation are eligible for all features of the FDA’s Fast Track designation, which may include more frequent communication with the FDA about the drug’s development plan and eligibility for Accelerated Approval and Priority Review, if relevant criteria are met.26The FDA previously granted Fast Track designation for PREVNAR 20 in September 2017 for use in adults aged 18 years or older.27 The FDA’s Fast Track approach is a process designed to facilitate the development and expedite the review of new drugs and vaccines intended to treat or prevent serious conditions and address an unmet medical need.25On February 26, 2021, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) accepted for review Pfizer’s Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) for the 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine candidate, as submitted for the prevention of invasive disease and pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae serotypes in the vaccine in adults ages 18 years and older. The formal review process by the EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) currently is ongoing.INDICATIONS FOR PREVNAR 20™PREVNAR 20™ is a vaccine indicated for active immunization for the prevention of pneumonia and invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 8, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 18C, 19A, 19F, 22F, 23F, and 33F in adults 18 years of age and olderThe indication for preventing pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae serotypes 8, 10A, 11A, 12F, 15B, 22F, and 33F is approved based on immune responses. The flat share price performance over the last year is somewhat surprising, though, as Alibaba continued to generate strong results in that time frame. During the last quarter, for example, Alibaba showcased a revenue growth rate of 64%, while revenue growth during the previous quarter was also very strong, at around 50%. This is not the only positive in Alibaba's earnings releases, however. The company also managed to grow its user count by 32 million during the most recent quarter alone, which equates to an annualized user growth rate of around 20%. This bodes well for future quarters, as more users on Alibaba's platform should translate into higher revenues. On top of that, the strong user growth shows that there is still growing demand for the shopping services that Alibaba's platforms offer -- the market is not saturated at all. Alibaba also managed to grow its EBITDA by 25% year over year, which is an attractive growth pace as well, and which was achieved despite growing investments in what management calls key growth areas. Income from operations, meanwhile, grew at an even faster pace, thanks to some operating leverage, rising by 48% year over year when adjusted for the fine that Alibaba had to pay during Q1. It makes, I believe, sense to back out this one-time item to get a clearer picture about Alibaba's underlying, \"core\" profitability during an average quarter.
\n
Alibaba Group's weak share price performance, relative to the broad market and other tech names, is thus not the result of weak operating performance, but rather a result of multiple compression, driven by weak investor sentiment due to China exposure and fears about regulation.
\n
At its current price of $220, BABA trades at a quite large discount compared to the current consensus analyst price target of $298. If Alibaba were to hit that, shares would gain 35%. Analyst price targets are usually issued with a 1-year time frame, thus, if the analyst community is correct, Alibaba could be a great investment. From a valuation standpoint, this price target doesn't seem outrageous at all, as $298 would equate to around 29x this year's expected net profits, or 23x next year's net earnings. The latter is likely the more telling one when we talk about a price target for summer 2022, i.e. 1 year from now.
\n
Can Alibaba Stock Hit $500?
\n
The answer to that question, I think, depends on your time frame. If you are looking at a 12-month window, then Alibaba will most likely not be able to hit $500. The ~$300 price target seems achievable, although that is, of course, also not guaranteed. If, however, we take a longer-term view, then $500 seems like a share price that BABA could hit eventually. Let's look at a couple of examples.
\n
- If Alibaba were to generate earnings per share of $20 at some point and traded at an earnings multiple of 25, then shares would trade at $500.
\n
- If Alibaba were to generate earnings per share of $25 and traded at a 20x earnings multiple, then shares would trade at $500.
\n
- If Alibaba were to generate earnings per share of $17 and traded at 29x its net profits, then shares would trade at (marginally below) $500.
\n
We see that there are many scenarios that could get us to a $500 share price for BABA, some of them more likely than others. Of course, the higher your target multiple, the lower the earnings that would be required. This, in turn, means that the price target can be hit sooner, as less cumulative earnings growth would be required. When we take a look at how Alibaba was valued in the past, we see that the longer-term median earnings multiples for BABA look like this:
\n
Data byYCharts
\n
At 30-40x net earnings, Alibaba was clearly trading at a massive premium relative to how shares are valued today (around 20x this year's earnings). I think that the current valuation is too low, but on the other hand, I do not expect Alibaba to trade at 30, 35, or even 40x net profits in coming years. Due to the growing scale of Alibaba, which makes it a little harder to maintain its excellent growth in coming years, shares will likely trade at a lower valuation in coming years, compared to how they were valued in the past.
\n
I still think that shares do have some valuation expansion potential from the current earnings multiple of around 21, thus let's assume that shares trade at 23x net profits in the future. This would still represent a massive discount versus the historic valuation, and also a substantial discount compared to how US-based high-tech mega-caps are valued -- Amazon (AMZN), for example, trades at 59x this year's earnings.
\n
If we want to get to a $500 share price for BABA using a 23x earnings multiple, then we get to earnings per share of $21.70 that Alibaba must generate. When could this be the case? In the following chart, we see EPS estimates for the current year, next year (CY 2022), and CY 2023:
\n
Data byYCharts
\n
If analysts are right, Alibaba will not get to earn $22 a share through 2023, and I think that is realistic. I do not see earnings per share rising by 100%+ between this year and 2023, either. From 2023, it would take another 43% increase in Alibaba's earnings per share to get to $21.70, which is our \"target EPS\" for a $500 share price.
\n
Data byYCharts
\n
Analysts are currently forecasting long-term EPS growth of around 27%, which would mean it would take Alibaba about 1.5 years to grow its EPS from $15.20 (2023 estimate) to our target of $21.70. Even if we assume that this is too optimistic and that growth will be just 20% in 2024 and 2025, EPS of $21.70 could be hit by the end of 2025. So, in other words, if Alibaba grows a little less than what analysts are forecasting right now, Alibaba could trade at $500 by the end of 2025 -- or 4.5 years from now. Note that this scenario does not require a high earnings multiple at all -- at 23x net profits, Alibaba wouldn't be expensive, I believe.
\n
We can get even more conservative and assume that the 2023 EPS estimate is 10% too high and that EPS will grow by just 17% a year in the years beyond 2023 (versus a long-term forecast of 27% a year by the analyst community). In that case, Alibaba would hit $21.70 in earnings per share in 2026, and shares would rise to $500 over the next 5.5 years. Even in this scenario, BABA wouldn't be a bad investment at all -- a 130% share price increase from the current level over the next 5.5 years would equate to annualized returns of 16%.
\n
So, to sum this section up, I'd sayyes, BABA can hit $500-- but it will realistically take a couple of years. By the mid-2020s, this seems like a very achievable goal to me, although there are, of course, no guarantees.
\n
Is Alibaba Stock A Buy Or Sell Now?
\n
Alibaba Group is, I believe, a strong investment. The company generates strong growth, profits from multiple long-term macro trends, such as growing consumer spending in China, growing e-commerce market share, and cloud computing. There are, however, risks to consider: Alibaba is highly China-dependent, and in case the economic growth story in China ends, Alibaba would be hurt a lot. On top of that, Alibaba could be targeted again by regulators, although I personally think that it is not in China's best interest to hurt one of its highest-growth tech companies.
\n
For those that worry about these risks, Alibaba may not be the right choice, but for those that see Alibaba as a potentially very rewarding play on Chinese consumers, BABA could be a strong pick in a diversified portfolio. I belong to the latter group and thus rate the stock a buy at current valuations, expecting significant upside over the coming years. Depending on your risk tolerance and how you weigh the opportunities and threats of investing in Chinese companies, you may decide differently, however.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Can Alibaba Stock Hit $500? If, however, we take a longer-term view, then $500 seems like a share price that BABA could hit eventually. Let's look at a couple of examples.\n- If Alibaba were to generate earnings per share of $20 at some point and traded at an earnings multiple of 25, then shares would trade at $500.\n- If Alibaba were to generate earnings per share of $25 and traded at a 20x earnings multiple, then shares would trade at $500.\n- If Alibaba were to generate earnings per share of $17 and traded at 29x its net profits, then shares would trade at (marginally below) $500.\nWe see that there are many scenarios that could get us to a $500 share price for BABA, some of them more likely than others. Of course, the higher your target multiple, the lower the earnings that would be required. This, in turn, means that the price target can be hit sooner, as less cumulative earnings growth would be required. When we take a look at how Alibaba was valued in the past, we see that the longer-term median earnings multiples for BABA look like this:\nData byYCharts\nAt 30-40x net earnings, Alibaba was clearly trading at a massive premium relative to how shares are valued today (around 20x this year's earnings). I think that the current valuation is too low, but on the other hand, I do not expect Alibaba to trade at 30, 35, or even 40x net profits in coming years. Due to the growing scale of Alibaba, which makes it a little harder to maintain its excellent growth in coming years, shares will likely trade at a lower valuation in coming years, compared to how they were valued in the past.\nI still think that shares do have some valuation expansion potential from the current earnings multiple of around 21, thus let's assume that shares trade at 23x net profits in the future. This would still represent a massive discount versus the historic valuation, and also a substantial discount compared to how US-based high-tech mega-caps are valued -- Amazon (AMZN), for example, trades at 59x this year's earnings.\nIf we want to get to a $500 share price for BABA using a 23x earnings multiple, then we get to earnings per share of $21.70 that Alibaba must generate. When could this be the case? In the following chart, we see EPS estimates for the current year, next year (CY 2022), and CY 2023:\nData byYCharts\nIf analysts are right, Alibaba will not get to earn $22 a share through 2023, and I think that is realistic. I do not see earnings per share rising by 100%+ between this year and 2023, either. From 2023, it would take another 43% increase in Alibaba's earnings per share to get to $21.70, which is our \"target EPS\" for a $500 share price.\nData byYCharts\nAnalysts are currently forecasting long-term EPS growth of around 27%, which would mean it would take Alibaba about 1.5 years to grow its EPS from $15.20 (2023 estimate) to our target of $21.70. Even if we assume that this is too optimistic and that growth will be just 20% in 2024 and 2025, EPS of $21.70 could be hit by the end of 2025. So, in other words, if Alibaba grows a little less than what analysts are forecasting right now, Alibaba could trade at $500 by the end of 2025 -- or 4.5 years from now. Note that this scenario does not require a high earnings multiple at all -- at 23x net profits, Alibaba wouldn't be expensive, I believe.\nWe can get even more conservative and assume that the 2023 EPS estimate is 10% too high and that EPS will grow by just 17% a year in the years beyond 2023 (versus a long-term forecast of 27% a year by the analyst community). In that case, Alibaba would hit $21.70 in earnings per share in 2026, and shares would rise to $500 over the next 5.5 years. Even in this scenario, BABA wouldn't be a bad investment at all -- a 130% share price increase from the current level over the next 5.5 years would equate to annualized returns of 16%.\nSo, to sum this section up, I'd sayyes, BABA can hit $500-- but it will realistically take a couple of years. By the mid-2020s, this seems like a very achievable goal to me, although there are, of course, no guarantees.\nIs Alibaba Stock A Buy Or Sell Now?\nAlibaba Group is, I believe, a strong investment. The company generates strong growth, profits from multiple long-term macro trends, such as growing consumer spending in China, growing e-commerce market share, and cloud computing. There are, however, risks to consider: Alibaba is highly China-dependent, and in case the economic growth story in China ends, Alibaba would be hurt a lot. On top of that, Alibaba could be targeted again by regulators, although I personally think that it is not in China's best interest to hurt one of its highest-growth tech companies.\nFor those that worry about these risks, Alibaba may not be the right choice, but for those that see Alibaba as a potentially very rewarding play on Chinese consumers, BABA could be a strong pick in a diversified portfolio. I belong to the latter group and thus rate the stock a buy at current valuations, expecting significant upside over the coming years. Depending on your risk tolerance and how you weigh the opportunities and threats of investing in Chinese companies, you may decide differently, however.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":270,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":818740730,"gmtCreate":1630452384220,"gmtModify":1676530304902,"author":{"id":"3561964707303823","authorId":"3561964707303823","name":"Happyfish","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5083e727dd5928aedd9d371dffbfd8bc","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561964707303823","authorIdStr":"3561964707303823"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Alibaba(BABA)$rebound slightly, continue the momentum baba[Victory] ","listText":"$Alibaba(BABA)$rebound slightly, continue the momentum baba[Victory] ","text":"$Alibaba(BABA)$rebound slightly, continue the momentum baba[Victory]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/818740730","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":106,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
