The iPhone 14 comes in four models: the basic iPhone 14, a "supersized" (Apple's word) version called the iPhone 14 Plus, and the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The basic starts at $799, the Plus starts at $899, the Pro starts at $999 and the Pro Max starts at $1,099.

All four models boast more advanced front and back cameras and safety features that can detect whether you've been in a car crash and help you call 911, even if you're in an isolated area with limited cell service. The 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus has "the best battery life ever in an iPhone," the company said.

All told, the iPhone 14 models "have incredible new features that will help our users in meaningful ways," Apple chief executive Tim Cook said at Wednesday's unveiling.

How meaningful those upgrades really are remains to be seen. But there's no denying that the birth of the iPhone 15 years ago marked the beginning of a new, more intimate relationship between humans and their phones. Some might say that connection has morphed into codependency; people can't seem to function without their smartphones.

Is now the time to take that relationship to the next level and get a new iPhone?

Why it matters

"I think keeping the price at $799 was a brilliant move on Apple's part," said Charles Lindsey, associate professor of Marketing, University at Buffalo School of Management a professor at the University at Buffalo. "By not raising the price, they will not only capture early sales from the Apple innovators/early adopters (who typically buy new versions as soon as possible) but they will also pull in/convert your more mainstream users (who are typically slower to upgrade)."

The iPhone 14 comes in "stunning" colors including deep purple and starlight. Those pretty hues contrast with some gloomy economic data in the U.S: Record-high inflation has pushed Americans' cost of living way up, home prices and rents have soared, and credit card debt has piled up as pandemic-related government relief has receded. The labor market remains extremely tight, but some companies have been laying off employees or freezing hiring.

All of that may make consumers skittish about shelling out close to $1,000 on a phone. Which may explain Apple's decision to keep the base price of the iPhone 14 exactly the same as the starting price for the iPhone 13, unveiled in 2021.

The price isn't the only thing that didn't budge.

"The base iPhone 14 model is actually almost identical to the 13," said Melanie Pinola, a senior writer and editor on the smartphone beat at Consumer Reports.

Based on what Pinola saw at Wednesday's unveiling, it appears that the iPhone 14 has the same display, processor, overall design and the same battery as the 13. "If you have a 13, I don't know if I would switch to a 14 this year," Pinola said. "There are small improvements with the 14, but I wouldn't say I would rush out right now."

The most notable change among the iPhone 14 models is the new larger version, the iPhone 14 Plus, with a 6.7-inch display, which is similar in size to the Samsung Galaxy S22, Pinola said. "This is the first time that Apple has ever made a large screen phone under $1,000, so it's more accessible for people who want a larger phone," Pinola told MarketWatch.

The verdict

Skip the iPhone 14, unless your existing phone is on life support. "If you're not able to get security or software updates, it's definitely time to get a new phone," Pinola said.

My reasons

Tech companies have trained us to line up for new products on their schedule. But should Apple dictate when you spend money? Maybe that's how it became one of the world's most profitable companies. But blindly following Apple's marching orders is not how you will become the most profitable version of yourself.

Is my verdict best for you?

On the other hand, the fact that Apple kept the starting price the same on the iPhone 14 could make an upgrade easier to swallow, said Philip Michaels, U.S. managing editor at the product review site Tom's Guide.

"People who bought the iPhone 13 last year are probably still very happy with their phones and will have little reason to upgrade," Michaels told MarketWatch. "And given Apple's track record of lengthy software support -- iOS 16 works fine on phones released five years ago -- it's easy to hold onto your current iPhone for a long time."

"That said, if you've got an iPhone 11 or earlier, you will definitely notice an improvement in performance, even with the A15 Bionic chip on the iPhone 14 as opposed to the more advanced A16 Bionic powering the Pro models. Cameras figure to produce better results, too, though testing Apple's new phones will confirm that. Because Apple held the pricing at iPhone 13 levels despite the rumors of price hikes, an upgrade is even easier to justify," Michaels said.

Another possible incentive to upgrade: deals available through Apple can cut up to $800 off the price tag of the iPhone 14, and major mobile phone carriers including AT&T $(T)$, T-Mobile $(TMUS)$ and Verizon $(VZ)$, are offering discounts as well.

If you're trying to decide whether to upgrade, don't forget about the value of your existing phone, said Josh Lowitz co-founder of Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, publisher of the upcoming CIRP-Apple report on Substack.

"Used iPhones have real value, as trade-ins or hand-me-downs to family or friends," Lowitz said. "Our data shows that about half of new iPhone buyers trade-in or sell their old phone, and more than a third of those who monetize their old phone, report that it was worth more than $300."

Retail promotions, including enhanced trade-in offers, can reduce the cost of ownership further, he noted.

Another key point: mobile carriers are offering longer payment plans. In the past, phone purchases were generally broken up into 24 or even 18 or 20 payments. Now, 30 and 36 monthly payment plans are common, Lowitz said.

"That reduces the monthly outlay, though it postpones the relief of making that final payment, and the new phone buyer needs to be confident that their phone will serve them that long. Even with the strong residual value of an iPhone, a buyer with 36 payments may have negative equity in their phone into their third year of ownership," Lowitz said.

Apple shares closed almost 1% up Wednesday after the iPhone 14 event, but they are down 12% year to date. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 are down 13.5% and more than 16%, respectively, this year.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Is the iPhone 14 Worth It? But blindly following Apple's marching orders is not how you will become the most profitable version of yourself. Is my verdict best for you?On the other hand, the fact that Apple kept the starting price the same on the iPhone 14 could make an upgrade easier to swallow, said Philip Michaels, U.S. managing editor at the product review site Tom's Guide.\"People who bought the iPhone 13 last year are probably still very happy with their phones and will have little reason to upgrade,\" Michaels told MarketWatch. \"And given Apple's track record of lengthy software support -- iOS 16 works fine on phones released five years ago -- it's easy to hold onto your current iPhone for a long time.\"\"That said, if you've got an iPhone 11 or earlier, you will definitely notice an improvement in performance, even with the A15 Bionic chip on the iPhone 14 as opposed to the more advanced A16 Bionic powering the Pro models. Cameras figure to produce better results, too, though testing Apple's new phones will confirm that. Because Apple held the pricing at iPhone 13 levels despite the rumors of price hikes, an upgrade is even easier to justify,\" Michaels said.Another possible incentive to upgrade: deals available through Apple can cut up to $800 off the price tag of the iPhone 14, and major mobile phone carriers including AT&T $(T)$, T-Mobile $(TMUS)$ and Verizon $(VZ)$, are offering discounts as well.If you're trying to decide whether to upgrade, don't forget about the value of your existing phone, said Josh Lowitz co-founder of Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, publisher of the upcoming CIRP-Apple report on Substack.\"Used iPhones have real value, as trade-ins or hand-me-downs to family or friends,\" Lowitz said. \"Our data shows that about half of new iPhone buyers trade-in or sell their old phone, and more than a third of those who monetize their old phone, report that it was worth more than $300.\"Retail promotions, including enhanced trade-in offers, can reduce the cost of ownership further, he noted.Another key point: mobile carriers are offering longer payment plans. In the past, phone purchases were generally broken up into 24 or even 18 or 20 payments. Now, 30 and 36 monthly payment plans are common, Lowitz said.\"That reduces the monthly outlay, though it postpones the relief of making that final payment, and the new phone buyer needs to be confident that their phone will serve them that long. Even with the strong residual value of an iPhone, a buyer with 36 payments may have negative equity in their phone into their third year of ownership,\" Lowitz said.Apple shares closed almost 1% up Wednesday after the iPhone 14 event, but they are down 12% year to date. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 are down 13.5% and more than 16%, respectively, this year.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":257,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9055670934,"gmtCreate":1655270211628,"gmtModify":1676535601544,"author":{"id":"3562193477377321","authorId":"3562193477377321","name":"Junji","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3562193477377321","authorIdStr":"3562193477377321"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great","listText":"Great","text":"Great","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9055670934","repostId":"1175672060","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1175672060","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Stock Market Quotes, Business News, Financial News, Trading Ideas, and Stock Research by Professionals","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Benzinga","id":"1052270027","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d08bf7808052c0ca9deb4e944cae32aa"},"pubTimestamp":1655269792,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1175672060?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-06-15 13:09","market":"hk","language":"en","title":"Why Alibaba, Nio, Chinese Peers Are Surging In Hong Kong Today","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1175672060","media":"Benzinga","summary":"Shares of major U.S.-listed Chinese companies traded higher in Hong Kong on Tuesday morning as inves","content":"

Shares of major U.S.-listed Chinese companies traded higher in Hong Kong on Tuesday morning as investors cheered better-than-expected economic data from the Asian nation.

Chinese tech giants like Alibaba Group Holdings, Baidu Inc, and JD.com gained as much as 5%, whereas Tencent Holdings TCEHY edged higher.

In the electric vehicle segment, Nio Inc led the rally with 13% gains, whereas Xpeng Inc and Li Auto Inc gained as much as 6%.

Shares of these Chinese companies ended higher on Tuesday on U.S. bourses.

Global Markets Recap: At press time, the benchmark Hang Seng Index was 1.19% higher on mostly positive cues from global peers.

Japan's Nikkei 225 lost 0.73%, while Shanghai's SSE Composite Index gained 0.95% and Singapore's SGX Nifty was up 1.04%.

Macro Factors: The investor optimism came amid better-than-expected economic numbers from China. Apple CEO Tim Cook last quarter said that supply constraints caused by chip shortages had cost Apple $6 billion, and the chip shortages and supply issues are also expected to impact Apple's first quarter earnings results.

Ahead of the earnings report, here's a close look at some of the areas investors may want to check on.

Revenue growth

Analysts have big expectations for Apple's top line. On average, they expect revenue of $118 billion for the quarter. Though this only represents about 6% year-over-year growth, it's a bullish forecast when you put it into context. First, consider the tough comparison Apple is up against. Revenue in the year-ago period rose 29% year over year.

Second, supply constraints and logistical challenges in the company's most recently reported quarter were so great that management opted to refrain from providing specific revenue guidance for fiscal Q1, coinciding with the fourth calendar quarter. In addition, Apple management said it expected the pain from supply challenges to persist in fiscal Q1.

"We estimate the impact from supply constraints will be larger during the December quarter," management said in the company's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call.

But if Apple does a good job of mitigating supply chain challenges, the December quarter could be quite impressive; management said Apple was seeing "high demand" for its products. In addition, management said it expects "revenue for each product category to grow on a year-over-year basis, except for iPad, which we expect to decline year over year due to supply constraints."

Earnings per share

Analysts expect Apple's earnings per share to grow even faster than revenue. On average, analysts are modeling for earnings per share of $1.88, representing year-over-year growth of 12%.

Apple's earnings per share typically grow faster than its revenue because of the company's aggressive share repurchases. By reducing total share count over time, Apple's net income is spread across a shrinking number of shares, contributing to earnings-per-share growth.

Revenue guidance

Another important metric investors will probably look to is management's guidance for its fiscal second-quarter revenue. Currently, analysts seem to have a very conservative view for the quarter, with the consensus estimate calling for revenue of $90.4 billion. That's only slightly above the $89.6 billion of revenue the company reported in the second quarter of fiscal 2021.

Just as was the case for fiscal Q1, the light revenue forecast stems from Apple's tough year-ago comparisons and an uncertain operating environment. But it's possible analysts are being too conservative.

Overall, supply chain and logistical challenges mean that Apple's upcoming earnings report is a bit of a wildcard; Apple's business performance could be anywhere from poor to outstanding relative to analyst estimates. But in order for the company to keep investors excited, Apple will likely have to report revenue, earnings per share, and revenue guidance ahead of analysts' estimates.

Apple Analysts Boost Targets Ahead of Earnings

Analysts continue to crank out bullish notes about Apple‘s outlook ahead of the tech giant’s earnings report.

Apple had a big run in late 2021, pushing the stock close to the $3 trillion market capitalization level, a milestone no company has previously reached. Bulls think results for the fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 31 could spur the stock to finally eclipse that hurdle.

Loop Capital Markets analyst Ananda Baruah repeated his Buy rating on Apple shares, lifting his price target to $210, from $165. He believes the company will surpass Street expectations both on iPhone units sold and for average selling prices in fiscal 2022. Apple could post 10% to 15% growth in both iPhone and overall revenue this year, he writes, which would be well ahead of the Street consensus forecast for 4.4% growth.

Baruah estimates December-quarter iPhone units were in the 84-to-85-million-unit range, above the Street consensus at 81 million. Driven by strong iPhone sales, he’s modeling December-quarter revenue of $122 billion and profits of $1.95 a share, above consensus at $118 billion and $1.88 a share.

He also thinks the Street consensus on calendar 2022 iPhone production is too low—he’s expecting 243 million to 245 million, with the Street at 240 million.

Piper Sandler analyst Harsh Kumar likewise repeated his Overweight rating on Apple shares, while lifting his price target to $200 from $175. “We believe Apple has a favorable set-up for 2022,” he writes in a research note. “We believe iPhone momentum will continue due to 5G adoption, particularly in the United States and China.
