As a bear this is no surprise to me, but it is a major shock to many bulls who are expecting Bitcoin to go straight to $100,000 without a halt.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin is plagued/blessed with volatility and, make no mistake, if it did not have huge volatility, it would not be the giant brand it has become and crypto would not be the financial earthquake that is changing financial services forever.</p>\n<p>Markets are casinos; gamblers love to gamble and casinos love gamblers and ensure that they accommodate the players in as profitable a way as they can. Stocks, options, commodities, forex, they are no different from crypto in that they are filled with crashes, skulduggery and scandal, and the gaming tables are the same... ‘come play with leverage, come play with stop losses, this could be your lucky day.’</p>\n<p>Edwin Lefevre wrote the classic trading book in 1923 called ‘Reminiscences of a Stock Operator’ about famous trader/speculator/gambler Jesse Livermore. The ‘bucket shop’ scams of the time and the general trading environment around 1890-1930 remain basically unchanged today (…but, but, but think of all the regulation we have now…). Livermore was an incredibly talented trader that committed suicide when he lost it all, as traders are fated - by their counterparties and math - to do.</p>\n<p>Leverage and stop losses are just one example of how market actors like ‘bucket shops’ drive your account balances into their account balances. All the same finance scams of hidden charges, Ponzi schemes, ‘pump and dumps’ and so on are still everywhere to be seen in crypto, stocks etc. Where there are resources there are predators.</p>\n<p>So, a wild crash in crypto is to be expected and is perhaps even guaranteed. Take this phrase and write it like this:</p>\n<p>So, a wild crash in ______ is to be expected and is perhaps even guaranteed.</p>\n<p>Fill the blank as you see fit: stocks, bonds, property, the dollar, gold, junk bonds…. It will fit in just fine.</p>\n<p>Crashing is what markets do.</p>\n<p>Therefore, if you want to play in crypto, or for that matter in any financial market, you need two strategies for dealing with crashes.</p>\n<p><b>Strategy 1) What not to do</b></p>\n<ol>\n <li>Do not carry much leverage if any. If an instrument is volatile do not carry leverage at all.</li>\n <li>Do not hold stop losses on another party’s platforms.</li>\n <li>Do not hold positions for no good reason.</li>\n <li>Be prepared to hold your positions after a crash if you get caught and stuck in one</li>\n <li>If you are<b>certain</b>a crash is underway, do not hold and hope,<i>sell</i>.</li>\n</ol>\n<p><b>Strategy 2) What to do</b></p>\n<ol>\n <li>Never stop searching out the next crash. It is inevitable. One BTC at $60,000 is two BTC at $30,000.</li>\n <li>Buy the crash but only well after it’s happened and the dust is settling. This is the ultimate test of an investor.</li>\n <li>If you must trade during a crash, make sure you can depend on your providers not shuttering you in or out when it matters most (as true in stocks as in crypto). If you cannot depend on your service provider do not play. There is no customer service during a crash.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>A crash is a 25% drop in a dull asset but 50%-75% in anything spicy like crypto and 90% outside the blue chip instruments of a market.</p>\n<p><b>What next?</b></p>\n<p>Here is the chart:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8e84d0c18312986bee801a102afc9dd6\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"420\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">I’m still a bear<i>but</i>I think the recent rally is heavily driven by the social clampdown in China with Bitcoin and other cryptos a way of expatriating capital away from a developing authoritarian nightmare; a nightmare where even kids who want to play computer games can’t escape the boot of ideology. The impact of this new development may prove to be extremely potent and not in a good way for many, but for crypto it could be very strong.</p>\n<p>However, without that tailwind or other geopolitical conniptions I would expect Bitcoin to go under $20,000 but markets don’t listen to me. Like with every call, you must measure your speculation against what transpired. I produced a similar chart a few months ago showing the bull and the bear trend like the above. I hovered to the bear trend as the move I expected, and up went Bitcoin exactly on the bull trend as if by magic. Speculation is just that, and you have to believe what you see not what you think.</p>\n<p>The above trends will therefore develop, and I remain a bear.</p>\n<p><b>What to do?</b></p>\n<p>The golden rule is if you think you know, you don’t, so stop. If you know you know then proceed.</p>\n<p>Specifically:</p>\n<ol>\n <li>If you are a Hodl’er continue to dollar cost average in. If it really does melt down then perhaps drop some extra fiat in.</li>\n <li>If you don’t know what to do and need to ask then sell and save your fiat for when you are certain of your positions</li>\n <li>If you want to buy the dip be sure you want to hold because you might need to Hodl for a long time. If you are looking to flip you should wait because this move could go way lower.</li>\n <li>If you want to trade, look to go against extreme moves but only when they make your eyes bug out. Make sure the platform you use won’t choke and can execute under extreme volume.</li>\n <li>If you are looking for a re-entry - like me - this isn’t it (yet).</li>\n <li>If you are a tyro trader, study every tick of this. Crashes are where the real traders and investors make their killings because this is where the novices lose their shirts.</li>\n</ol>\n<p><b>What am I doing?</b></p>\n<p>‘Hodling’ what little ‘unstable coins’ I have. I am watching out for what will look great value when this move capitulates while focusing on midcap tokens for now. If this is the big crash of this cycle, after it’s all over and a week or two later, I’ll be picking a portfolio from the rubble.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin dropped another $1000 while I wrote this article and jumped $1000 while I edited it. As a bear this is no surprise to me, but it is a major shock to many bulls who are expecting Bitcoin to go straight to $100,000 without a halt.\nBitcoin is plagued/blessed with volatility and, make no mistake, if it did not have huge volatility, it would not be the giant brand it has become and crypto would not be the financial earthquake that is changing financial services forever.\nMarkets are casinos; gamblers love to gamble and casinos love gamblers and ensure that they accommodate the players in as profitable a way as they can. Stocks, options, commodities, forex, they are no different from crypto in that they are filled with crashes, skulduggery and scandal, and the gaming tables are the same... ‘come play with leverage, come play with stop losses, this could be your lucky day.’\nEdwin Lefevre wrote the classic trading book in 1923 called ‘Reminiscences of a Stock Operator’ about famous trader/speculator/gambler Jesse Livermore. The ‘bucket shop’ scams of the time and the general trading environment around 1890-1930 remain basically unchanged today (…but, but, but think of all the regulation we have now…). Livermore was an incredibly talented trader that committed suicide when he lost it all, as traders are fated - by their counterparties and math - to do.\nLeverage and stop losses are just one example of how market actors like ‘bucket shops’ drive your account balances into their account balances. All the same finance scams of hidden charges, Ponzi schemes, ‘pump and dumps’ and so on are still everywhere to be seen in crypto, stocks etc. Where there are resources there are predators.\nSo, a wild crash in crypto is to be expected and is perhaps even guaranteed. Take this phrase and write it like this:\nSo, a wild crash in ______ is to be expected and is perhaps even guaranteed.\nFill the blank as you see fit: stocks, bonds, property, the dollar, gold, junk bonds…. It will fit in just fine.\nCrashing is what markets do.\nTherefore, if you want to play in crypto, or for that matter in any financial market, you need two strategies for dealing with crashes.\nStrategy 1) What not to do\n\nDo not carry much leverage if any. If an instrument is volatile do not carry leverage at all.\nDo not hold stop losses on another party’s platforms.\nDo not hold positions for no good reason.\nBe prepared to hold your positions after a crash if you get caught and stuck in one\nIf you arecertaina crash is underway, do not hold and hope,sell.\n\nStrategy 2) What to do\n\nNever stop searching out the next crash. It is inevitable. One BTC at $60,000 is two BTC at $30,000.\nBuy the crash but only well after it’s happened and the dust is settling. This is the ultimate test of an investor.\nIf you must trade during a crash, make sure you can depend on your providers not shuttering you in or out when it matters most (as true in stocks as in crypto). If you cannot depend on your service provider do not play. There is no customer service during a crash.\n\nA crash is a 25% drop in a dull asset but 50%-75% in anything spicy like crypto and 90% outside the blue chip instruments of a market.\nWhat next?\nHere is the chart:\nI’m still a bearbutI think the recent rally is heavily driven by the social clampdown in China with Bitcoin and other cryptos a way of expatriating capital away from a developing authoritarian nightmare; a nightmare where even kids who want to play computer games can’t escape the boot of ideology. The impact of this new development may prove to be extremely potent and not in a good way for many, but for crypto it could be very strong.\nHowever, without that tailwind or other geopolitical conniptions I would expect Bitcoin to go under $20,000 but markets don’t listen to me. Like with every call, you must measure your speculation against what transpired. I produced a similar chart a few months ago showing the bull and the bear trend like the above. I hovered to the bear trend as the move I expected, and up went Bitcoin exactly on the bull trend as if by magic. Speculation is just that, and you have to believe what you see not what you think.\nThe above trends will therefore develop, and I remain a bear.\nWhat to do?\nThe golden rule is if you think you know, you don’t, so stop. If you know you know then proceed.\nSpecifically:\n\nIf you are a Hodl’er continue to dollar cost average in. If it really does melt down then perhaps drop some extra fiat in.\nIf you don’t know what to do and need to ask then sell and save your fiat for when you are certain of your positions\nIf you want to buy the dip be sure you want to hold because you might need to Hodl for a long time. If you are looking to flip you should wait because this move could go way lower.\nIf you want to trade, look to go against extreme moves but only when they make your eyes bug out. Make sure the platform you use won’t choke and can execute under extreme volume.\nIf you are looking for a re-entry - like me - this isn’t it (yet).\nIf you are a tyro trader, study every tick of this. Crashes are where the real traders and investors make their killings because this is where the novices lose their shirts.\n\nWhat am I doing?\n‘Hodling’ what little ‘unstable coins’ I have. I am watching out for what will look great value when this move capitulates while focusing on midcap tokens for now. Buying when the company turns a profit is the safer bet.</li></ul><p>Coursera (COURS), the online learning platform founded in 2012 by former Stanford University computer science professors Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng, filed itsIPO prospectuswith the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The Mountain View, California-based company offers individuals access to over 4,000 Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) from 200 educational institutions and corporations. The company also offers over two dozen degree programs at prices lower than what a learner would pay at a traditional, in-person institution. As the company grows its offering, it will be able to compete head-to-head with other “online program management” (OPM) providers, such as 2U(NASDAQ:TWOU), which is already publicly traded, and Noodle Partners.</p><p>Ng’sshareholder letter in the S-1articulated clearly just what the company is about:</p><blockquote>“We believe that education is the source of human progress. In today’s economy in which the skills needed to succeed are rapidly evolving, education is becoming more important than ever. As automation and digital disruption are poised to replace unprecedented numbers of jobs worldwide, giving workers the opportunity to upskill and reskill will be crucial to raising global living standards and increasing social equity. Online education will play a critical role, enabling anyone, anywhere, to gain the valuable skills they need to earn a living in an increasingly digital economy.”</blockquote><p>The filing lists Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup as underwriters. The number of shares and the price range of the proposed offering are yet to be determined.According to PitchBook data, Coursera’s most recent valuation in the private markets was $2.5 billion. To date, the company has raised $464 million in venture capital, most recently,$130 million in a Series F roundlast July. Coursera’s biggest institutional shareholders are New Enterprise Associates (18.3% of company stock), G Squared (15.9%) and Kleiner Perkins (9.2%).</p><p><b>Operating Results</b></p><p>The company earned $293 million in revenues for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2020, up 59% from 2019. Net losses widened by about $20 million year-on-year, reaching $66.8 million in 2020. Revenues shot up as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic’s effect on traditional education. In tandem with rising demand, operating costs associated with the company’s services rose, largely driven by the freemium content and marketing expenses. Coursera added over 12,000 new degree learners across the two years ended December 31, 2020 at an average acquisition cost of just below $2,000. The number of registered users rose by 65% year-on-year in 2020. Coursera’s accumulated deficit since its founding stood at $343.6 million as of December 31, 2020. The company does not expect to turn a profit in the foreseeable future.</p><p>The company’sCoursera for Campus,launched in late 2019to enable colleges to offer its library of MOOCs to their students, has been a key driver of recent revenue growth. At the start of the pandemic, Coursera made the program free to tertiary institutions until Sept. 30, 2020. Over 4,000 tertiary institutions from across the world signed up for the program, which, according to the company’s S-1 filing, makes it, “one of our fastest growing offerings”. As of December 31, 2020, over 130 tertiary institutions were paying for it.</p><p>At this point, it is hard to predict what the end of the pandemic would have on the company’s operating results.</p><p><b>The Strategy and Market Opportunity</b></p><p>Coursera is one of the most disruptive firms in the world. It has a flywheel approach to value creation, with significant price-to-cost advantages versus its competition. The company reported that about half of its new degree students in 2020 had been previously registered with Coursera and that its average student acquisition cost was less than $2,000. Its average student acquisition cost is lower than the industry standard. The edu-tech platform is able to efficiently acquire learners at scale because of the huge number of free, high-quality courses that it offers in partnership with top educational institutions and corporations; its ability to personalize content based on its wealth of data; the strength of word-of-mouth promotion by learners; the profitability of its affiliate paid marketing channel.</p><p>The platform offers a number of education tracks, for example:</p><ul><li>Specializations: A learner can pay between $39 and $99 a month for job-specific content across over 500 categories.</li><li>MasterTrack Certificates: For a quarter to a year, a learner can earn a certificate issued by a university-issued certificate. Prices range from $2,000 to $6,000.</li><li>Bachelor’s or Master’s Degrees: Fees range from $9,000 to $45,000.</li><li>Coursera for Enterprise: Through this platform, businesses, educational institutions and governments can deploy content to their learners.</li></ul><p>In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Coursera partnered with over 330 government agencies across 30 U.S. states and cities and 70 countries as part of itsCoursera Workforce Recovery Initiative, which gave governments the chance to offer unemployed workers free access to thousands of business, data science, and technology courses from companies such as Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN)and Google(NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL).</p><p>The company has 77 million registered learners, as well as over 2,000 businesses (including 25% of Fortune 500 companies) and 100 government agencies who paid for its enterprise offerings. The majority of its revenue (51%) was earned outside of the United States. Converting only a fraction of its 77 million registered users into paid users would change the economics of customer acquisition. The company’s present scale is a huge competitive advantage in the market.</p><p>A learner’s curriculum is designed to be “stackable”, which is to say that a learner can go through a domain in an incremental fashion. The company is able to leverage the huge volume of data it has accumulated from its over 220 million enrollments to personalize content. So, for example, Coursera’s Skills Graphs can suggest paths for job skills.</p><p>Coursera uses technology to drive down distribution costs, make content more affordable, extend access to less economically-endowed regions, help learners keep abreast of emerging skills, and grow its market opportunity. This is a big world so the potential is borderless to a degree. I still don’t quite get why I would need a Roku, so I am not their target audience. In our household we “cut the cord” a while back. But we use our phones and tablets to consume our media without Roku.</p>\n<p><b>ROKU Stock Is in Better Shape Now</b></p>\n<p>Recognizing the improvements is important because the long-term thesis changed for me. This is a streaming stock with no weak asterisks anymore.</p>\n<p>Being profitable does not mean that ROKU stock is now cheap. Experts could point to price-to-earnings ratio to call it expensive. They’d be wrong because for an aggressively growing company P/E is a bad metric. Companies cannot deliver impressive growth on a budget.</p>\n<p>The better gauge to use is the price-to-sales, and at 22 it is reasonable. This is in line with&nbsp;<b>Tesla</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>) and cheaper than&nbsp;<b>Zoom</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>ZM</u></b>) to use two other growers. ROKU P/S is triple&nbsp;<b>Netflix</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>NFLX</u></b>) and quadruple that of&nbsp;<b>Disney</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:<b><u>DIS</u></b>). Nevertheless it is not a flagrant reason to sell it. The amount of hope that its investors have in it now is high. But it is not in the clouds so high to drive a crash.</p>\n<p>ROKU stock rallied 740% from the pandemic crash. Then it corrected 44% and now is somewhere in the middle. The altitude is a bit alarming still 90% above last summer’s breakout. This concern is more serious since the markets are also near all-time highs.</p>\n<p>Last week Federal Reserve “taper” fears resurfaced and could be a drag on the all equities. Regardless of how good this story is, it will need the markets to remain strong.</p>\n<p><b>There Is Risk Below</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bbf9b67c067cf68328fee1f460de2f1e\" tg-width=\"1543\" tg-height=\"826\"><span>Source: Charts by TradingView</span></p>\n<p>If the overall malaise continues, ROKU could fall 30% from here and not change a thing. First, there would be a strong effort to hold the $280 zone. If that fails it would then trigger the rest of the dip. There is a way to profit from this potential now using options. This is also a way to get bullish the stock but leave room for error.</p>\n<p>An investor can sell the January 2022 ROKU $220 put to be bullish the stock. This trade would not even need a rally to win. In fact, the stock can fall almost 40% and they can still break even. If the stock falls below $220 then they could own the shares there.</p>\n<p>Big moves in stocks usually come from dislocations between reality and expectations. I don’t think there is such a scenario here. It’s a momentum stock but not teetering on disaster. I would not go as far as calling it a bargain but value became less of a threat.</p>\n<p>Earlier I admitted that I was ignorant on one front but did not commit the mistake of shorting it. Back then I knew that my bearish bias was a mere opinion with low conviction. This is a streaming stock with no weak asterisks anymore.\nBeing profitable does not mean that ROKU stock is now cheap. Experts could point to price-to-earnings ratio to call it expensive. They’d be wrong because for an aggressively growing company P/E is a bad metric. Companies cannot deliver impressive growth on a budget.\nThe better gauge to use is the price-to-sales, and at 22 it is reasonable. This is in line with Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and cheaper than Zoom (NASDAQ:ZM) to use two other growers. ROKU P/S is triple Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) and quadruple that of Disney (NYSE:DIS). Nevertheless it is not a flagrant reason to sell it. The amount of hope that its investors have in it now is high. But it is not in the clouds so high to drive a crash.\nROKU stock rallied 740% from the pandemic crash. Then it corrected 44% and now is somewhere in the middle. The altitude is a bit alarming still 90% above last summer’s breakout. This concern is more serious since the markets are also near all-time highs.\nLast week Federal Reserve “taper” fears resurfaced and could be a drag on the all equities. First, there would be a strong effort to hold the $280 zone. If that fails it would then trigger the rest of the dip. There is a way to profit from this potential now using options. This is also a way to get bullish the stock but leave room for error.\nAn investor can sell the January 2022 ROKU $220 put to be bullish the stock. This trade would not even need a rally to win. In fact, the stock can fall almost 40% and they can still break even. If the stock falls below $220 then they could own the shares there.\nBig moves in stocks usually come from dislocations between reality and expectations. I don’t think there is such a scenario here. It’s a momentum stock but not teetering on disaster. Coinbase</h2>\n<p>Coinbase \"powers the cryptoeconomy.\" It has run an exchange for crypto since its founding in 2012. Admittedly, Coinbase is not the only crypto exchange in existence. However, it achieved first-mover status in the industry. This gave it a head start and name recognition that most competitors have not attained.</p>\n<p>Also, Coinbase is the only pure-play crypto exchange trading on the stock market today. This means that the company competes with few others for the attention of stock investors.</p>\n<p>Additionally, Coinbase offers an easy-to-use platform, lowering the likelihood its customers will turn to the company's peers. Today, about 56 million verified users in over 100 countries trade crypto on Coinbase's site.</p>\n<p>Now, the massive increase in crypto interest in the last year has accrued to Coinbase's top and bottom lines. In its first earnings release, it reported total revenue of $1.8 billion in the first quarter of 2021, an increase of nine-fold from year-ago levels.</p>\n<p>Also, net income came in at $771 million, 24 times higher than the Q1 2020 profit of $32 million. Since operating expenses climbed by just over fivefold, net income outpaced the revenue growth rate despite a 75-fold increase in income tax expenses.</p>\n<p>Admittedly, with Coinbase trading at 22 times its book value, the stock appears expensive. This may partially explain why Coinbase stock has fallen steadily since its April IPO. Crypto prices have also come off their highs during that time, likely adding to pressure on the sock.</p>\n<p>However, if Bitcoin became the official currency, conditions would almost certainly turn in Coinbase's favor. With Bitcoin becoming indispensable for the general population instead of just crypto investors, its importance to the economy would probably make the bull case for Coinbase by itself.</p>\n<h2>2. Square</h2>\n<p>Bitcoin exchange has also become a significant revenue source for Square. Square's stock shot to record highs in 2020 as the pandemic induced more consumers to embrace fintech solutions. Nonetheless, Bitcoin became <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of those favored revenue sources for Square's Cash App as more than 3 million users traded on the platform in 2020.</p>\n<p>Since Square designed Cash App to disburse and collect funds, it serves as the perfect segue for a Bitcoin-denominated economy. Moreover, it has built a substantial lead on <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PYPL\">PayPal</a>'s</b> Venmo, a competing virtual cash platform that did not accommodate crypto transactions until earlier this year.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, Square links Cash App to a full-fledged financial ecosystem. Square handles personal transactions through both Cash App and its flagship card readers. Additionally, through Square Register and Square Payroll, the company can manage many business-related financial functions.</p>\n<p>That capability has expanded further with the launch of Square Bank. The bank allows Square to loan money without the involvement of a third party. Also, Bloomberg recently reported that this bank will soon offer business checking and business savings accounts. This places traditional banking and fintech under <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> umbrella for business finance.</p>\n<p>Accounting rules force Square to log the value of Bitcoin traded, and that skews results. Nonetheless, Bitcoin revenue came in at $4.6 billion in 2020, a nearly ninefold increase from the $516 million reported in 2019. Moreover, in the first quarter of 2021 alone, Bitcoin revenue grew to $3.5 billion, more than eleven times the $308 million from the year-ago quarter.</p>\n<p>Finally, the fact that Q1 2021 revenue amounted to 76% of full-year 2020 revenue shows Bitcoin's rapid growth despite holding no official status. Many who live in economically unstable countries turn to Bitcoin instead of the U.S. dollar for storing value, making purchases, and tracking spending.\nAlthough the Treasury Department has shown no inclination toward dropping the U.S. dollar in favor of Bitcoin, Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) and Square (NYSE:SQ) would almost certainly benefit from such a replacement.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Coinbase\nCoinbase \"powers the cryptoeconomy.\" It has run an exchange for crypto since its founding in 2012. Admittedly, Coinbase is not the only crypto exchange in existence. However, it achieved first-mover status in the industry. This gave it a head start and name recognition that most competitors have not attained.\nAlso, Coinbase is the only pure-play crypto exchange trading on the stock market today. This means that the company competes with few others for the attention of stock investors.\nAdditionally, Coinbase offers an easy-to-use platform, lowering the likelihood its customers will turn to the company's peers. Today, about 56 million verified users in over 100 countries trade crypto on Coinbase's site.\nNow, the massive increase in crypto interest in the last year has accrued to Coinbase's top and bottom lines. In its first earnings release, it reported total revenue of $1.8 billion in the first quarter of 2021, an increase of nine-fold from year-ago levels.\nAlso, net income came in at $771 million, 24 times higher than the Q1 2020 profit of $32 million. Since operating expenses climbed by just over fivefold, net income outpaced the revenue growth rate despite a 75-fold increase in income tax expenses.\nAdmittedly, with Coinbase trading at 22 times its book value, the stock appears expensive. This may partially explain why Coinbase stock has fallen steadily since its April IPO. Crypto prices have also come off their highs during that time, likely adding to pressure on the sock.\nHowever, if Bitcoin became the official currency, conditions would almost certainly turn in Coinbase's favor. With Bitcoin becoming indispensable for the general population instead of just crypto investors, its importance to the economy would probably make the bull case for Coinbase by itself.\n2. Square\nBitcoin exchange has also become a significant revenue source for Square. Square's stock shot to record highs in 2020 as the pandemic induced more consumers to embrace fintech solutions. Nonetheless, Bitcoin became one of those favored revenue sources for Square's Cash App as more than 3 million users traded on the platform in 2020.\nSince Square designed Cash App to disburse and collect funds, it serves as the perfect segue for a Bitcoin-denominated economy. Moreover, it has built a substantial lead on PayPal's Venmo, a competing virtual cash platform that did not accommodate crypto transactions until earlier this year.\nFurthermore, Square links Cash App to a full-fledged financial ecosystem. Square handles personal transactions through both Cash App and its flagship card readers. Additionally, through Square Register and Square Payroll, the company can manage many business-related financial functions.\nThat capability has expanded further with the launch of Square Bank. The bank allows Square to loan money without the involvement of a third party. Also, Bloomberg recently reported that this bank will soon offer business checking and business savings accounts. This places traditional banking and fintech under one umbrella for business finance.\nAccounting rules force Square to log the value of Bitcoin traded, and that skews results. Nonetheless, Bitcoin revenue came in at $4.6 billion in 2020, a nearly ninefold increase from the $516 million reported in 2019. Moreover, in the first quarter of 2021 alone, Bitcoin revenue grew to $3.5 billion, more than eleven times the $308 million from the year-ago quarter.\nFinally, the fact that Q1 2021 revenue amounted to 76% of full-year 2020 revenue shows Bitcoin's rapid growth despite holding no official status. The company reported Q1 earnings on Tuesday and cited the price hikes and an ongoing assessment of open contracts as the reasons why it has taken FY21 guidance off the table.\nThe rest of the quarter’s financials weren’t great but that was expected. Revenue dropped by 43.8% year-over-year to $245.93 million yet still beat the Street’s forecast by $7.07 million. Non-GAAP EPS hit $0.19, one cent below the consensus estimate.\nJ.P. Morgan’s Paul Coster remains a fan of the solar power equipment maker, but acknowledges the supply chain costs are creating a cloudy near-term outlook.\n“Demand remains at record levels and the company is not being squeezed by existing contracts, but rather faces uncertainty regarding the timing and profitability of unsigned contracts, which may potentially be delayed beyond prior expectations. Meacham said it is important but ASCO may not provide the pop to stocks it did in other years.\n“ASCO was by far and away the biggest medical conference of the year, and people looked forward to that. And you would have company presentations in front of 30,000 oncologists,” he said. “There would be hundreds of Wall Streeters. You could get a very good handle on what was the buzz of the meeting. SInce it’s virtual, it doesn’t have as much of its charm.”\nBut Meacham said ASCO could still be positive. “You have data that’s brand new and that could lead to approvals and some very good products,” he said.\nMeacham said he’s still positive on biotech despite its lackluster performance. He especially likes mid-cap biotech.\n“We’ve been pretty positive on the group. Recognizing that drug pricing has been a little bit of a cloud over the past couple of years, and 2021 is no different,” said Meacham. “But when you look at the pipeline, the midcap biotech pipeline looks fantastic.”\nThe pipeline in big pharma is got but not as robust. “For the most part, it’s singles and doubles. But not surprisingly, midcap biotech has some home run potential but with more risk. That’s what drives the industry - the innovation and new therapies - and that’s why we’re still positive.”\n\nThe IBB iShares NASDAQ Biotech ETF gained 0.4% last week, but it is up just 0.3% year-to-date. The widely followed IBB was down 1.7% for the month of May.\nMeacham identified three companies that could get a positive reception at the ASCO meeting. Bank of America has a buy rating on all of them. One of those is big pharma Bristol-Myers Squibb.\n“Bristol is probably one of the winners,” he said. The company’s anti-LAG-3 antibody relatlimab melanoma treatment has been in development and there will be data from a large phase 3 trial. He said the product was used with its Opdivo, and could have a better safety profile than the current treatment of Opdivo combined with Yervoy. He does expect Opdivo and Yervoy to maintain the lead share of the market going forward.\nBig cap biotech Amgen is presenting on its lung cancer drug Lumakras, which received Food and Drug Administration approval Friday. The drug was approved to treat lung cancer patients with a genetic mutation known as KRAS. The approval came sooner than expected and sent Amgen shares up more than 1.1% Friday.\nHe said it could be combined with other therapy, like Opdivo. “That two drug combination could be really profound,” he said.\nBiotech company Seagen is going to present on its Padcev treatment for bladder and kidney cancer, launched last year. “This is an update of existing data,” he said.
