Tesla managed aGAAPnet income of $438 million in the first quarter, up from just $16 million one-year prior. It would appear, at least at first glance, that the electric-vehicle (EV) pioneer is on the right track in terms of profitability.
\n
The problem is that these profits aren't really coming from the cars that Tesla sells. The company currently generates hundreds of millions of dollars in pure profit each quarter from the sale of regulatory credits, a side effect of other automakers not making enough zero-emission vehicles to meet regulatory requirements.
\n
Regulatory credit sales totaled $518 million in the first quarter, accounting for all of Tesla's profit and then some. This has been the case in previous quarters, as well. In fact, after backing out regulatory credits from Tesla's net income, the company has been unprofitable for six-straight quarters.
\n
Tesla's bottom line got an additional boost in the first quarter from a gain onthe sale ofBitcointo the tune of $101 million, which showed up as a reduction in costs. The picture doesn't look so rosy when both regulatory credits and Bitcoin gains are excluded:
\n

\n
DATA SOURCE: TESLA. CHART BY AUTHOR.
\n
There's no question that Tesla's growth is impressive, but there's also no question that the core business of making and selling cars is not turning a profit. The question Tesla investors need to ask themselves is: If Tesla isn't profitable now, when there's little to no competition in electric vehicles in the United States, what's going to happen when a deluge of competition fromtraditional automakersarrives?
\n
A ton of competition is coming
\n
Tesla's brand has a cult following, so some people will be buying Tesla vehicles regardless of the other options available. But that's not likely to be the case for most people.
\n
The number of electric vehicles available for purchase in the U.S. is set to explode in the coming years.General Motors(NYSE:GM)is planning to launch 30 EVs globally by 2025, with two-thirds set to be sold in North America. The company is aiming to sell 1 million EVs annually in North America by 2025.
\n
Those models include electric versions of the company's GMC Hummer and Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Tesla has a loyal customer base, but so does GM. Someone who's been a GM truck buyer for years is likely to stick with GM when they decide to switch to an electric vehicle.
\n

\n
\n
Ford(NYSE:F)is also pouring resources into electric vehicles, allocating $29 billion for electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. The company's plans include anelectric version of its F-150 pickup truck, which should hit the production lines by mid-2022. Given GM's and Ford's plans, it will not be easy for Tesla to steal away market share in the lucrative pickup-truck segment.
\n
Other car companies have big plans, as well.Volkswagen(OTC:VWAGY)already sells over 200,000 EVs annually andexpects that number to double this year. Tesla managed aGAAPnet income of $438 million in the first quarter, up from just $16 million one-year prior. It would appear, at least at first glance, that the electric-vehicle (EV) pioneer is on the right track in terms of profitability.\nThe problem is that these profits aren't really coming from the cars that Tesla sells. The company currently generates hundreds of millions of dollars in pure profit each quarter from the sale of regulatory credits, a side effect of other automakers not making enough zero-emission vehicles to meet regulatory requirements.\nRegulatory credit sales totaled $518 million in the first quarter, accounting for all of Tesla's profit and then some. This has been the case in previous quarters, as well. In fact, after backing out regulatory credits from Tesla's net income, the company has been unprofitable for six-straight quarters.\nTesla's bottom line got an additional boost in the first quarter from a gain onthe sale ofBitcointo the tune of $101 million, which showed up as a reduction in costs. The picture doesn't look so rosy when both regulatory credits and Bitcoin gains are excluded:\n\nDATA SOURCE: TESLA. CHART BY AUTHOR.\nThere's no question that Tesla's growth is impressive, but there's also no question that the core business of making and selling cars is not turning a profit. The question Tesla investors need to ask themselves is: If Tesla isn't profitable now, when there's little to no competition in electric vehicles in the United States, what's going to happen when a deluge of competition fromtraditional automakersarrives?\nA ton of competition is coming\nTesla's brand has a cult following, so some people will be buying Tesla vehicles regardless of the other options available. But that's not likely to be the case for most people.\nThe number of electric vehicles available for purchase in the U.S. is set to explode in the coming years.General Motors(NYSE:GM)is planning to launch 30 EVs globally by 2025, with two-thirds set to be sold in North America. The company is aiming to sell 1 million EVs annually in North America by 2025.\nThose models include electric versions of the company's GMC Hummer and Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Tesla has a loyal customer base, but so does GM. Someone who's been a GM truck buyer for years is likely to stick with GM when they decide to switch to an electric vehicle.\n\nIMAGE SOURCE: GM.\nFord(NYSE:F)is also pouring resources into electric vehicles, allocating $29 billion for electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. The company's plans include anelectric version of its F-150 pickup truck, which should hit the production lines by mid-2022. Given GM's and Ford's plans, it will not be easy for Tesla to steal away market share in the lucrative pickup-truck segment.\nOther car companies have big plans, as well.Volkswagen(OTC:VWAGY)already sells over 200,000 EVs annually andexpects that number to double this year. The company is aiming to sell roughly 2 million EVs annually by 2025 and expects to launch 70 EV models by 2030.Toyota(NYSE:TM)willlaunch 15 new electric vehicles by 2025, some of which will be under the new Toyota bZ sub-brand. The list goes on.\nNot only will all these electric vehicles provide consumers with a bevy of options beyond Tesla, but they'll also deprive Tesla of its regulatory-credit income as other automakers churn out an increasing number of EVs.\nNone of this is to say that Tesla can't be successful in a world where it faces more competition. The president addresses a joint session of Congress Wednesday evening. It’s a huge week for earnings with about a third of the S&P 500 reporting, including Big Tech names, such as Apple,Microsoft,Alphabet and Amazon. As many have already done, firms like Boeing, Ford,Caterpillar and McDonald’s, are likely to detail cost pressures they are facing from rising materials and transportation costs and supply chain disruptions. At the same time, the Fed is expected to defend its policy of letting inflation run hot, while assuring markets it sees the pick-up in prices as only temporary. The central bank meets on Tuesday and Wednesday. The central bank takes the main stage“I think the Fed would like not to be a feature next week, but the Fed will be forced from the background because of concerns about inflation,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton. The central bank is not expected to make any policy moves, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s press briefing following the meeting Wednesday will be closely watched. So far, the barrage of earnings news has been positive, with 86% of companies reporting earnings beats. Corporate profits are expected to be up about 33.9% for the first quarter, based on estimates and actual reports, according to Refinitiv. Revenues are about 9.9% higher. There is important inflation data Friday when the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge is reported. The personal consumption expenditure report is expected to show a 1.8% rise in core inflation, still below the Fed’s target of 2%. Other data releases include the first-quarter gross domestic product on Thursday, which is expected to have grown by 6.5%, according to Dow Jones.“I think the Fed has no urgency to shift monetary policy at this point,” said Ian Lyngen, head of U.S. rates strategy at BMO. “The Fed needs to acknowledge that the data is improving. We had a strong first quarter.”“The Fed needs to acknowledge that but at the same time they’re keeping extremely accommodative policy in place, so they’ll have to make a note to the fact that the easy policy is warranted,” he said.Lyngen said the Fed will likely point to continued concerns about the pandemic globally as a potential risk to the economic recovery.Powell is also expected to once more explain that the Fed will let inflation rise above its 2% target for a period of time before it raises rates so that the economy can have more time to heal. “It’s going to be a challenge for the Fed,” said Swonk. The base effects for the next several months will make inflation appear to have jumped sharply because of the comparison to a weak period last year. The consumer price index for April could be above 3%, compared to 2.6% last month, Swonk added.“The Fed is trying to let a lot more people get out onto the dance floor before it calls ‘last call,’” she said. “Really what Powell has been saying since day one is if we take care of people on the margins and bring them back into the labor force, the rest will take care of itself.”Stocks were slightly lower in the past week, and Treasury yields held at lower levels. The 10-year yield, which moves opposite price, was at 1.55% Friday. The S&P 500was down 0.1%, ending the week at 4,180, while Nasdaq Composite was down nearly 0.3% at 14,016. The Dow was off just shy of 0.5% at 34,043.Tax hike prospectsStocks were hit hard on Thursday when after a news report said that Biden is expected to propose a capital gains tax rate of 39.6% for people earning more than $1 million a year.Combined with the 3.8% net investment income tax, the new levy would more than double the long term capital gains rate of 20% or the richest Americans.Strategists said Biden is expected to propose raising the income tax rate for those earning more than $400,000.“I think a lot of people are starting to price in the risk there going to be a significant increase in both corporate and capital gains taxes,” said Lyngen. So far, companies have not provided much in the way of commentary on the proposed hike in corporate taxes to 28% from 21% but they have been talking about other costs.David Bianco, chief investment strategist for the Americas at DWS, said he expects larger companies will do better dealing with supply chain constraints than smaller ones. Big Tech is also likely to fare better during the semiconductor shortage than auto makers, which have already announced production shutdowns, he said.“Next week is tech week. I think we’re going to get down on our knees and just be in awe of their business models and their ability to grow at a behemoth scale,” Bianco said.He said he’s not in favor of Wall Street’s popular trade into cyclicals and out of growth. He still favors growth.“We’re overweight equities really because we’re concerned about rising interest rates,” Bianco said. “I’m not bullish in that I expect the market to rise that much from here.”“We stuck with growth and dug deeper into bond substitutes, utilities, staples, real estate,” he said, adding he is underweight industrials, energy and materials. “Energy is doomed. It’s being nationalized via regulation. I do like industrials, they are well-run companies, but I do think infrastructure spending expectations for classic infrastructure are too high.”He also said industrials are good businesses, but the stocks have become overvalued.Bianco said he likes big box stores, but smaller retailers are facing big challenges that were already impacting them prior to Covid. He also finds small biotech firms attractive.“I like healthcare stocks. Those valuations are reasonable. People have been paranoid about politicians beating on them since 1992. They manage through it and lately they’ve been delivering,” he said.Week ahead calendarMondayEarnings:Tesla,Canadian National Railway, Canon,Check Point Software,Otis Worldwide, Vale,Ameriprise,NXP Semiconductor,Albertsons, Royal Phillips8:30 a.m. Durable goodsTuesdayFOMC begins two day meetingEarnings:Microsoft,Alphabet,Visa,Amgen,Advanced Micro Devices,3M,General Electric,Eli Lilly, Hasbro,United Parcel Service,BP,Novartis,JetBlue,Pultegroup,Archer Daniels Midland,Waste Management,Starbucks,Texas Instrument,Chubb,Mondelez,FireEye,Corning,Raytheon9:00 a.m. S&P/Case-Shiller9:00 a.m. FHFA home prices10:00 a.m. Consumer confidence10:00 a.m. Housing vacanciesWednesdayEarnings:Apple, Boeing,Facebook,Qualcomm,Ford,MGM Resorts,Humana,Norfolk Southern,General Dynamics,Boston Scientific, eBay, Samsung Electronics, GlaxoSmithKline,Yum Brands, SiriusXM, Aflac,Cheesecake Factory,Community Health System,CIT Group,Entergy,CME Group,Hess,Ryder System8:30 a.m. Advance economic indicators2:00 p.m. Fed statement2:30 p.m. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell briefingThursdayEarnings:Amazon,Caterpillar,McDonald’s,Twitter,Bristol-Myers Squibb,Comcast,Merck,Northrop Grumman, Airbus,Kraft Heinz,Intercontinental Exchange,Mastercard,Gilead Sciences,U.S. Steel, Cirrus Logic,Texas Roadhouse, Cabot Oil, PG&E,Royal Dutch Shell,Church & Dwight, Carlyle Group,Southern Co.8:30 a.m. Initial jobless claims8:30 a.m. Real GDP Q110:00 a.m. Pending home salesFridayEarnings:ExxonMobil,Chevron,Colgate-Palmolive,AstraZeneca,Clorox,Barclays, AbbVie, BNP Paribas,Weyerhaeuser,Illinois Tool Works, CBOE Global Markets, Lazard,Newell Brands,Aon,LyondellBasell,Pitney Bowes,Phillips 66,Charter Communications8:30 a.m. Personal income and spending8:30 a.m. Employment cost index Q19:45 a.m. Chicago PMI10:00 a.m. Consumer sentimentSaturdayEarnings:Berkshire Hathaway","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":532,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":375611748,"gmtCreate":1619331656784,"gmtModify":1704722577357,"author":{"id":"3562624457229976","authorId":"3562624457229976","name":"Stager88","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cd3ef126bfd6caef0ce200334e97278d","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3562624457229976","authorIdStr":"3562624457229976"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Because its volatile","listText":"Because its volatile","text":"Because its volatile","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/375611748","repostId":"2129361421","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2129361421","pubTimestamp":1619328002,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2129361421?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-25 13:20","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Why Do Millennials Love GameStop Stock?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2129361421","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"The video game stock is still popular with the young adult generation.","content":"
GameStop (NYSE:GME) mania has come and gone, but for the video game retailer's biggest fans the love affair isn't over.
\n
GameStop shares famously skyrocketed in January, driven when a band of mostly millennial traders on the Reddit message board WallStreetBets executed a short squeeze and a gamma squeeze, lifting the price from less than $20 at the beginning of the year to as high as $483 at its peak on Jan. 28.
\n
That bubble burst, however, and the stock fell back down to near $40 per share. But then it surprisingly rallied again through February and March, pushed by the same group of traders, on hopes that Chewy co-founder Ryan Cohen -- who will become chairman of Gamestop after the company's annual shareholder meeting in June -- can execute a successful transition to e-commerce.\nThe person most identified with the GameStop rally is 34-year-old Keith Gill, who goes by RoaringKitty on Twitter and DeepF*ckingValue on Reddit. Gill's posts advertising his massive holdings in the stock and his bull thesis helped rally other traders, who were inspired by Gill's refusal to sell even as he sat on millions on gains. His purchases of GameStop after the initial rally helped push the stock higher in February and March, and he is now sitting on 200,000 shares of GameStop stock -- worth about $30 million.\nGill has become the avatar of the GameStop traders, and like many of those most enthusiastic about the stock, he's a millennial. The net-add forecast for the March quarter is down from the 15.8 million spike in subscribers driven by Covid-19 in the year-ago first quarter.
\n
The company expects operating margin in the March quarter to jump to 25%, from 16.6% a year ago and 14.4% in the fourth quarter.
\n
Last quarter,Netflix surprised Wall Street with the news that it now expects to be cash flow break-even or better moving forward—and that it has begun considering stock buybacks. Netflix had $1.9 billion in positive free cash flow in 2020, thanks to lower production costs as a result of the pandemic, compared with a $3.3 billion cash flow loss in 2019. For 2021, Netflix expects to break even on a cash flow basis. Fourth-quarter cash flow was negative $138 million.
\n
Netflix also said that with $8.2 billion in cash and an untouched $750 million credit facility, “we believe we no longer have a need to raise external financing for our day-to-day operations.” In addition, the streaming giant said it had about $16 billion in debt overall and expects to maintain $10 billion to $15 billion in gross debt over time. Netflix said it would “explore returning cash to shareholders through ongoing stock buybacks,” something it hasn’t done since 2011.
\n
The stock shot higher on that news, but has since eased back, as attention turns to the potential for slowing near-term subscriber growth. Analyst sentiment heading into earnings is mixed.
\n
Piper Sandler analyst Thomas Champion, who has an Overweight rating and $605 target price on Netflix, is bullish on the stock heading into the report. The net-add forecast for the March quarter is down from the 15.8 million spike in subscribers driven by Covid-19 in the year-ago first quarter.\nThe company expects operating margin in the March quarter to jump to 25%, from 16.6% a year ago and 14.4% in the fourth quarter.\nLast quarter,Netflix surprised Wall Street with the news that it now expects to be cash flow break-even or better moving forward—and that it has begun considering stock buybacks. Netflix had $1.9 billion in positive free cash flow in 2020, thanks to lower production costs as a result of the pandemic, compared with a $3.3 billion cash flow loss in 2019. For 2021, Netflix expects to break even on a cash flow basis. Fourth-quarter cash flow was negative $138 million.\nNetflix also said that with $8.2 billion in cash and an untouched $750 million credit facility, “we believe we no longer have a need to raise external financing for our day-to-day operations.” In addition, the streaming giant said it had about $16 billion in debt overall and expects to maintain $10 billion to $15 billion in gross debt over time. Netflix said it would “explore returning cash to shareholders through ongoing stock buybacks,” something it hasn’t done since 2011.\nThe stock shot higher on that news, but has since eased back, as attention turns to the potential for slowing near-term subscriber growth. Analyst sentiment heading into earnings is mixed.\nPiper Sandler analyst Thomas Champion, who has an Overweight rating and $605 target price on Netflix, is bullish on the stock heading into the report. While noting that the company was a beneficiary of the pandemic, he thinks Netflix will benefit from a combination of “a strong consumer” as the economy reopens, a clamp-down on password sharing, and “a pandemic tailwind that may remain in Europe.” Champion notes that a recent Piper survey of teens found that they allocate 32% of video consumption to Netflix, versus 8% for Hulu, the second-most popular subscription video service.\nUBS analyst John Hodulik notes that investors have become increasingly focused on how summer seasonality might manifest this year, given a reopening economy and the potential for added churn from higher subscription prices in some markets. The stock could remain volatile in the short-to-medium term, he warns. But the analyst “continues to view Netflix as the long-term winner within streaming media and remains constructive on the fundamentals.” He keeps a Buy rating and $650 target price on Netflix shares.\nRaymond James analyst Andrew Marok, who has a Market Perform rating on Netflix shares, remains cautious on the stock for now. Marok continues to view Netflix as a “long-term winner in the video-on-demand space,” he writes. He does see some near-terms risks, however: the pace of subscriber additions post-pandemic, the impact of the pandemic on 2021 content releases, and scaling competition from cheaper competitive subscription services.\nFor Netflix’s June quarter, Wall Street consensus calls for revenue of $7.4 billion, earnings of $2.69 a share, and 4.4 million net subscriber additions.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":284,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":346430417,"gmtCreate":1618100095939,"gmtModify":1704706557320,"author":{"id":"3562624457229976","authorId":"3562624457229976","name":"Stager88","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cd3ef126bfd6caef0ce200334e97278d","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3562624457229976","authorIdStr":"3562624457229976"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Maybe","listText":"Maybe","text":"Maybe","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/346430417","repostId":"2126333180","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2126333180","pubTimestamp":1617981480,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2126333180?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-09 23:18","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Is Las Vegas Sands Stock a Buy?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2126333180","media":"Travis Hoium","summary":"This stock may not be an easy bet for investors.","content":"
The gambling industry has been completely decimated over the past year as the pandemic has shut down resorts around the world and caused consumers to be more cautious with their entertainment spending. Some of the highlights included the doubling of services and wearables revenues in five years, the 5G super cycle, the greenfield Apple Car opportunity, and an acceleration in share repurchases.
\n
Now, I look at the flip side of the coin. How would one support the most bearish argument on Apple shares? At least one analyst has compiled a laundry list of items that makes him fear for a 35% drop in the stock price from current levels.
\n
Apple might be too hyped
\n
Goldman Sach’s Rod Hall is one of those very rare Apple analysts that maintain a sell rating on the stock. While I have not come across research from him that is more recent thanlate January, most of his bearish points still seem relevant today.
\n
For starters, Goldman does not seem impressed with the near-term smartphone opportunity. According to the research shop, the iPhone 12 resembles a “redesign cycle” rather thana more meaningful “5G super cycle”. As a result, iPhone replacement rates should be low in 2021.
\n
Still on the same subject, Goldman projects ASP (average selling price) to come down this year, as buyers shift to cheaper models like the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 11. Here, recent data points have been suggesting the opposite: the mini seems to be the biggest loser within the product portfolio, while the Pro and Pro Max have been performing above expectations.
\n
Also, Mr. Hall does not seethe Apple Car opportunityas a profitable initiative.Accordingto him:
\n
\n “The auto industry has generally lower gross margins than Apple's own current businesses. Tesla's gross margins are about 20%, compared to Apple's 40%. Operating margins are even lower, typically in the high single digits. Even in optimistic scenarios, the release of a production Apple Car is likely to have only a minor impact on Apple's bottom line.”\n
\n
Lastly, the analyst believes that the end of the COVID-19 crisis will trigger a discretionary spending shift from tech devices (iPhones, Macs) to away-from-home services (travel and leisure). This could be a negative catalyst for the stock in 2021.
\n
The Apple Maven’s take
\n
In my opinion, the market is not the place to cheer for or against a stock. This is what sports arenas are for (after the pandemic is over, of course). So, I think that even the most confident of Apple investors should pay attention to the bearish case on the stock, and think through the arguments critically.
\n
I think Goldman raises good points about the hype around the 5G super cycle and the Apple Car. Whether either can push Apple’s financial results significantly above current consensus remains to be seen. Meanwhile, the stockseems to have already priced some of the upside.
\n
I also understand the risk in discretionary spending migrating away from tech hardware, software and services. Just as an example, air travel bookings for the summer seasonhave already started to climb fast. Where will the money to cover these costs come from? A brand-new iPad could be one answer.
\n
Still, the Apple Maven sees more upside to investing in Apple at current levels than downside risk. In addition to the bullish points on the business fundamentals, the valuation floor and dip-buying opportunityincreases the probability that an investment in Apple today will pay off in the long term.
\n
Twitter speaks
\n
The most bullish analysts say that Apple could head to $225 per share, under the rosiest scenario. The most bearish of them says “not so fast”, and sees 35% downside risk. Consumer sentimentSaturdayEarnings:Berkshire Hathaway","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":532,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":389080063,"gmtCreate":1612621191252,"gmtModify":1704873250729,"author":{"id":"3562624457229976","authorId":"3562624457229976","name":"Stager88","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cd3ef126bfd6caef0ce200334e97278d","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3562624457229976","idStr":"3562624457229976"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Airbnb, Inc.(ABNB)$I won some money from this stock ??","listText":"$Airbnb, Inc.(ABNB)$I won some money from this stock ??","text":"$Airbnb, Inc.(ABNB)$I won some money from this stock ??","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/389080063","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":247,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":346430417,"gmtCreate":1618100095939,"gmtModify":1704706557320,"author":{"id":"3562624457229976","authorId":"3562624457229976","name":"Stager88","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cd3ef126bfd6caef0ce200334e97278d","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3562624457229976","idStr":"3562624457229976"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Maybe","listText":"Maybe","text":"Maybe","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/346430417","repostId":"2126333180","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2126333180","pubTimestamp":1617981480,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2126333180?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-09 23:18","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Is Las Vegas Sands Stock a Buy?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2126333180","media":"Travis Hoium","summary":"This stock may not be an easy bet for investors.","content":"
Some of the highlights included the doubling of services and wearables revenues in five years, the 5G super cycle, the greenfield Apple Car opportunity, and an acceleration in share repurchases.\nNow, I look at the flip side of the coin. How would one support the most bearish argument on Apple shares? At least one analyst has compiled a laundry list of items that makes him fear for a 35% drop in the stock price from current levels.\nApple might be too hyped\nGoldman Sach’s Rod Hall is one of those very rare Apple analysts that maintain a sell rating on the stock. While I have not come across research from him that is more recent thanlate January, most of his bearish points still seem relevant today.\nFor starters, Goldman does not seem impressed with the near-term smartphone opportunity. According to the research shop, the iPhone 12 resembles a “redesign cycle” rather thana more meaningful “5G super cycle”. As a result, iPhone replacement rates should be low in 2021.\nStill on the same subject, Goldman projects ASP (average selling price) to come down this year, as buyers shift to cheaper models like the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 11. Here, recent data points have been suggesting the opposite: the mini seems to be the biggest loser within the product portfolio, while the Pro and Pro Max have been performing above expectations.\nAlso, Mr. Hall does not seethe Apple Car opportunityas a profitable initiative.Accordingto him:\n\n “The auto industry has generally lower gross margins than Apple's own current businesses. Tesla's gross margins are about 20%, compared to Apple's 40%. Operating margins are even lower, typically in the high single digits. Even in optimistic scenarios, the release of a production Apple Car is likely to have only a minor impact on Apple's bottom line.”\n\nLastly, the analyst believes that the end of the COVID-19 crisis will trigger a discretionary spending shift from tech devices (iPhones, Macs) to away-from-home services (travel and leisure). This could be a negative catalyst for the stock in 2021.\nThe Apple Maven’s take\nIn my opinion, the market is not the place to cheer for or against a stock. This is what sports arenas are for (after the pandemic is over, of course). So, I think that even the most confident of Apple investors should pay attention to the bearish case on the stock, and think through the arguments critically.\nI think Goldman raises good points about the hype around the 5G super cycle and the Apple Car. Whether either can push Apple’s financial results significantly above current consensus remains to be seen. Meanwhile, the stockseems to have already priced some of the upside.\nI also understand the risk in discretionary spending migrating away from tech hardware, software and services. Just as an example, air travel bookings for the summer seasonhave already started to climb fast. Where will the money to cover these costs come from? A brand-new iPad could be one answer.\nStill, the Apple Maven sees more upside to investing in Apple at current levels than downside risk. In addition to the bullish points on the business fundamentals, the valuation floor and dip-buying opportunityincreases the probability that an investment in Apple today will pay off in the long term.\nTwitter speaks\nThe most bullish analysts say that Apple could head to $225 per share, under the rosiest scenario. The most bearish of them says “not so fast”, and sees 35% downside risk. The company is in the midst of rebuilding the fundamentals of its business and balance sheet.
\n
Fortunately, progress is being made and General Electric looks to be on the right track (finally). We will review the company and our investment thesis below.
\n
General Electric Is Making Progress
\n
To start, let's talk about General Electric. The company is massive, doing more than $79 billion in revenues (in a down year). General Electric has several main business segments that branch into a variety of applications in their own right. These are:
\n
source: General Electric Company
\n
These segments generate the vast majority of General Electric's business. The company also has its Capital arm (a shell of its former size) and a Research/Digital segment. The company's corporate backlog is massive at a whopping $386 billion as of year-end.
\n
I will keep this as a forward-looking discussion (versus explaining the history of General Electric's restructuring). The important thing to know is that GE is working to improve in two key areas. These are the company's margins and its balance sheet. We can see above that the company's main businesses (industrial segments) combine for just a 3.4% margin. Its free cash flow margin is even worse at just 1%.
\n
source: General Electric Company
\n
Part of the company's struggles this year were due to the pandemic, as we can see the FCF margin in 2019 will match what the company is forecasting for 2021. The long-term goal of management is to get FCF margins up to high single digits.
\n
The company has set out on an agenda to streamline operations and cut costs/grow efficiencies, but what may actually help GE more is an evolving make-up of its backlog. Many of the products that General Electric sells are capital intensive, cost a lot to produce, and sell at very low margin. Some examples of this would include wind turbines, gas turbines, plane engines, etc.
\n
Let's look at a couple examples of General Electric's products and the revenue generation throughout their lifecycle:
\n

\n
source: General Electric Company
\n
We can see how in both cases there is an upfront creation of revenue from the sale of equipment, but that most of the revenue comes throughout the lifecycle of the product via service contracts.
\n
General Electric has an enormous base of installed equipment including:
\n
\n
7,000+ gas turbines
\n
50,000 offshore/onshore wind turbines
\n
37,700 commercial grade aviation engines
\n
26,500 military grade aviation engines
\n
4 million healthcare installations
\n
\n
The majority of GE's backlog ($386.5 billion) consists of service revenue. In 2020 the company generated:
\n
\n
62% of its revenues from services in the Power segment, but 78% of the Power backlog is services.
\n
18% of its revenue from services in the Renewables segment, but 42% of the Renewables backlog is services.
\n
61% of its revenue from services in the Aviation segment, but 87% of its Aviation backlog is services.
\n
45% of its revenue from services in the Healthcare segment, but 68% of its Healthcare backlog is services.
\n
\n
source: General Electric Company
\n
We can see that over the coming years, the revenue mix should shift more towards services, which will carry higher margins. The Aviation business will also rebound as we come out of the pandemic.
\n
Financially, General Electric has also been working to deleverage its balance sheet. The job isn't \"done\" here, but GE has made strong progress.
\n
source: General Electric Company
\n
The company is in the middle of a pending deal to sell its GE Capital Aviation Services business (used to finance leasing of aircrafts) to AerCap (AER). General Electric will receive equity and $24 billion in cash in the transaction. The deal's proceeds will be used to further deleverage, and General Electric will have cleared approximately $70 billion in debt since 2018.
\n
The deal will further enable General Electric to streamline its business, and positions the company to deleverage to below 2.5X EBITDA by 2023 per management's goals. At this point, General Electric will be more profitable, leaner, and have a strong balance sheet that can backstop the company moving forward.
\n
The Pandemic Has Not Been Kind To GE
\n
The company has made considerable progress, but 2020 was not a kind year to General Electric. The company's Aviation arm is a critical part of GE's business, and the aviation industry as a whole suffered in 2020.
\n
General Electric saw its organic revenues in 2020 drop 17% companywide, 95% of which was related to the fall-off in the Aviation segment. This makes sense, given that airlines essentially cut all spending with so few flights throughout the year. The aviation recovery will take a few years, with General Electric forecasting a minor improvement in 2021 before accelerating in 2022.
\n
source: General Electric Company
\n
If not for the pandemic, I think you could move a lot of General Electric's financial projections up into this year, but the pandemic virtually set the company back 12-18 months due to its exposure to the aviation industry.
\n
Near Term Upside Is Priced In
\n
With that said, we need to consider this when talking about valuation. The stock has rallied hard over the past 12 months. At more than $13 per share, the stock has appreciated 108%.
\n
source: YCharts
\n
We can see the expected pivot that revenues will make according to analyst estimates. Revenues will gain traction this year, with momentum beginning to drive growth of revenues beyond pre-pandemic levels next year.
\n
source: Seeking Alpha
\n
From an earnings standpoint, General Electric is forecasted to earn the following over the next few years:
\n
\n
2021: $0.24 per share
\n
2022: $0.51 per share
\n
2023: $0.75 per share
\n
\n
The rebound in revenues combined with expectedly higher margins produces strong earnings growth that will see earnings per share triple over the next few years. It's a little tricky to compare valuations to historical data because the company has changed so much over the past decade.
\n
If we used estimated earnings for this year, the stock is trading at an earnings multiple of approximately 56X. This is obviously overpriced, but we see the company's strong earnings growth that is expected. If we were to target a 20X multiple on the company, the 2023 estimate of $0.75 puts the stock at 18X.
\n
This is much more reasonable, but it's also three fiscal years away from now. In other words, the market has already priced in General Electric's near-term upside. I would like to see shares fall back under $10, otherwise investors should be prepared to wait for General Electric to grow into its valuation over several years.
\n
Wrapping Up
\n
General Electric has fallen from grace and has struggled to find its footing throughout the decade. Fortunately, the company finally seems to be on the right track, and I am impressed with the progress the business has made given its size and complexity. The market is right to be excited, but I just think the stock has gotten too far ahead of itself.
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
General Electric: Whether You Should Be Buying The Revival
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nGeneral Electric: Whether You Should Be Buying The Revival\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-25 14:04 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nGeneral Electric continues to make progress in rebuilding the fundamentals of its business.\nHowever, its aviation exposure was a setback due to Covid.\nTrading at 18x 2023 estimated earnings, ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"GE":"GE航空航天"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4421081-general-electric-whether-you-should-be-buying-revival","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5a36db9d73b4222bc376d24ccc48c8a4","article_id":"1151656752","content_text":"Summary\n\nGeneral Electric continues to make progress in rebuilding the fundamentals of its business.\nHowever, its aviation exposure was a setback due to Covid.\nTrading at 18x 2023 estimated earnings, the stock is not a buy today despite the progress that General Electric is making.\n\nPhoto by Jetlinerimages/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images\nOne of the great industrial conglomerates of the world, General Electric Company(NYSE:GE)is known both for a myriad of products it sells to the world and the destruction of shareholder value that has occurred over the past decade. The company's Aviation arm is a critical part of GE's business, and the aviation industry as a whole suffered in 2020.\nGeneral Electric saw its organic revenues in 2020 drop 17% companywide, 95% of which was related to the fall-off in the Aviation segment. This makes sense, given that airlines essentially cut all spending with so few flights throughout the year. The aviation recovery will take a few years, with General Electric forecasting a minor improvement in 2021 before accelerating in 2022.\nsource: General Electric Company\nIf not for the pandemic, I think you could move a lot of General Electric's financial projections up into this year, but the pandemic virtually set the company back 12-18 months due to its exposure to the aviation industry.\nNear Term Upside Is Priced In\nWith that said, we need to consider this when talking about valuation. The stock has rallied hard over the past 12 months. At more than $13 per share, the stock has appreciated 108%.\nsource: YCharts\nWe can see the expected pivot that revenues will make according to analyst estimates. Revenues will gain traction this year, with momentum beginning to drive growth of revenues beyond pre-pandemic levels next year.\nsource: Seeking Alpha\nFrom an earnings standpoint, General Electric is forecasted to earn the following over the next few years:\n\n2021: $0.24 per share\n2022: $0.51 per share\n2023: $0.75 per share\n\nThe rebound in revenues combined with expectedly higher margins produces strong earnings growth that will see earnings per share triple over the next few years. It's a little tricky to compare valuations to historical data because the company has changed so much over the past decade.\nIf we used estimated earnings for this year, the stock is trading at an earnings multiple of approximately 56X. This is obviously overpriced, but we see the company's strong earnings growth that is expected. If we were to target a 20X multiple on the company, the 2023 estimate of $0.75 puts the stock at 18X.\nThis is much more reasonable, but it's also three fiscal years away from now. In other words, the market has already priced in General Electric's near-term upside. I would like to see shares fall back under $10, otherwise investors should be prepared to wait for General Electric to grow into its valuation over several years.\nWrapping Up\nGeneral Electric has fallen from grace and has struggled to find its footing throughout the decade. Fortunately, the company finally seems to be on the right track, and I am impressed with the progress the business has made given its size and complexity. The market is right to be excited, but I just think the stock has gotten too far ahead of itself.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":422,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":373543022,"gmtCreate":1618875079266,"gmtModify":1704716097176,"author":{"id":"3562624457229976","authorId":"3562624457229976","name":"Stager88","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cd3ef126bfd6caef0ce200334e97278d","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3562624457229976","idStr":"3562624457229976"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Oohhh","listText":"Oohhh","text":"Oohhh","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/373543022","repostId":"2128942848","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2128942848","pubTimestamp":1618844760,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2128942848?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-19 23:06","market":"us","language":"en","title":"NIO Plans Wider Recharging and Battery Swap Network","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2128942848","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"The Chinese electric vehicle maker is looking to expand charging availability in the country's vast geography.","content":"
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) company NIO (NYSE:NIO) tried to make a splash at the Shanghai auto show on Monday with an inaugural appearance of its upcoming ET7 luxury sedan, and the announcement of a new plan to provide broader availability of recharging and battery swap services.

The plan is a three-year initiative to add battery swap stations and various types of chargers and charging stations in eight provinces and autonomous areas of the country.
While noting that the company was a beneficiary of the pandemic, he thinks Netflix will benefit from a combination of “a strong consumer” as the economy reopens, a clamp-down on password sharing, and “a pandemic tailwind that may remain in Europe.” Champion notes that a recent Piper survey of teens found that they allocate 32% of video consumption to Netflix, versus 8% for Hulu, the second-most popular subscription video service.
\n
UBS analyst John Hodulik notes that investors have become increasingly focused on how summer seasonality might manifest this year, given a reopening economy and the potential for added churn from higher subscription prices in some markets. The stock could remain volatile in the short-to-medium term, he warns.
