If history is anything to go by, GameStop could technically be the world's most valuable company if short sellers can't find stocks to cover their positions in. That would see its share price rise to thousands of dollars a share.</p><p><b>Shares rise to thousands of dollars?</b></p><p>Yes, you read that right, there is even historical precedent to support this. Back in 2008, when most of the world was dealing with the economic trauma of the Great Recession, Volkswagen AG briefly became the world's most valuable company by market value.</p><p>Long story short, the company makes a good short target due to its high debt load and exposure to business and credit cycles. When Porsche announced that it had quietly increased its stake in the company to 78%, it signaled to the market that it would try to buy the entire Volkswagen company.</p><p>This left short sellers panicking to cover their positions, sending VW shares above €1,000 intraday. Volkswagen owned 300 million shares outstanding, bringing its market capitalization at the time to 300 billion euros, more than any other company at the time.</p><p>If GameStop is to achieve the aforementioned goals, then its market cap will need to exceed Apple's $2.5 trillion. Apple is the most valuable company in the world today. Since GameStop only has 70 million shares outstanding, its share price will need to exceed $35,000.
