Their market caps, not so much.\nThis past week, the world’s fiv","content":"
Big tech stocks keep getting bigger. Their market caps, not so much.
\n
This past week, the world’s five largest tech companies—Apple(ticker: AAPL),Microsoft(MSFT),Amazon.com(AMZN),Alphabet(GOOGL), andFacebook(FB)—all reported quarterly results. Their collective performance was astonishing. As a group, their revenue increased 36%, to $332 billion. These companies spent the pandemic making gobs of money.
\n
Butinvestors were unimpressed. While Alphabet inched 1.3% higher for the week, the others were all down. Amazongot the worst reception; its stock fell 7.6% on Friday. With all five hovering near all-time highs, investors are taking profits, worried that growth rates are going to slow from here. Beneath the surface, the concerns are well founded. Here are the key takeaways from Big Tech’s huge earnings:
\n
The pandemic boom is over. That’s not to say the pandemic itself is over—the Delta variant is wreaking havoc—but Americans have already made changes in their behavior, and those adjustments are having a major impact on the tech giants.
\n
It starts with e-commerce. Amazon Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky said on the company’s earnings call that starting in mid-May, growth in e-commerce sales dropped into the midteens from the 30%-to-40% range. People are getting vaccines and leaving the house to buy things that just a few months ago they would have bought online. They’re also shifting some disposable income from online shopping to travel, restaurants, and even events. Olsavsky sees continued tough comparisons for Amazon—and midteens growth rates—for the next few quarters.
\n
Applebeat expectations in all of its segments, but growth is slowing there, too. Mac sales were up 16% in the June quarter, down from 70% growth three months earlier. iPad sales were up 12%, versus 79% in the March period. This is all still better than before the pandemic, but it suggests that the furious shopping spree for home offices and virtual schooling is coming to an end.Logitech(LOGI), which makes PC peripherals like mice and webcams, had 66% revenue growth in the June quarter, but it sees flat revenue for its fiscal year ending in March 2022.
\n
Component shortages continue. The market’s biggest issue with Apple’s quarter was its warning that the chip supply shortage has worsened since the end of June—and that the issue will affect the availability of iPads and, even worse, iPhones. In September, Apple is expected torelease the iPhone 13—and there’s a risk that Apple might not be able to meet demand.Qualcomm(QCOM) this past week warned that the chip shortage could drag into 2022. This could take a while to fix.
\n
Meanwhile, Apple CEO Tim Cook said on the company’s earnings call that shipping costs are higher, too. I saw evidence of that from my seat at a San Francisco Giants game this past week. Looking past McCovey Cove toward San Francisco Bay, there were at least a dozen container ships lined up to get into the Port of Oakland, which saw an 11% increase in cargo volume in the first half. The port is backed up in part due to a shortage of dockworkers. Freight rates are at record levels, and the holiday merchandising season is fast approaching, adding to demand for freight capacity.
\n
Online advertising is blazing hot.On a brighter note for investors, Alphabet’sad business grew 68% in the latest quarter, including an 84% jump in advertising at YouTube. Facebook’sad business grew 56%, driven by a 47% year-over-year increase in ad pricing. Amazon’s “other” revenue category, mostly ads, was up 87%, to $7.9 billion, nearly $1 billion better than Wall Street estimates. Apple doesn’t break out advertising, but ad strength contributed to the 33% growth in the company’s services business. Microsoft saw a53% jump in search ads(remember Bing?) and a 97% jump in advertising at LinkedIn. It all stems from the reopening of the economy. Alphabet told analysts that the biggest driver of ad growth was retail, with strong contributions from travel, financial services, and media and entertainment. People are shopping, eating out, and going on vacation, and that’s driving ads.
\n
Cloud adoption is accelerating. The digital transformation trend that everyone in enterprise computing talks about is the real deal. For Amazon, the slowdown in e-commerce growth overshadowed a fantastic quarter for its Amazon Web Services cloud unit, which grew 37%—accelerating from 32% in the March quarter— to $14.8 billion. That was $500 million better than estimates. Microsoft Azure revenue was up 51%, beating the Wall Street consensus by nine percentage points. Alphabet posted 54% growth in its Google Cloud business, accelerating from 46% growth in the March quarter. Google Cloud is rapidly approaching a $20 billion annual revenue run rate. Give it a cloud-like sales multiple of 20 times and the business is worth $400 billion, constituting more than 20% of Alphabet’s current market value.
\n
The wild card.Regulators and legislators scrutinizing Big Tech are surely looking at the latest results and finding a new sense of purpose. The big are getting bigger. And the regulatory risks are getting riskier.
","source":"lsy1610680873436","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Big Tech Earnings Sparkled. ETFs are also \"set it and forget it\" types of investments, and they perform best when you invest consistently and leave your money alone for as long as possible.
\n
Growth ETFs are designed to include stocks with the potential for above-average returns, and they can be a fantastic option to supercharge your earnings. By investing in any of these three funds and holding them for as long as possible, you'll be on your way to generating long-term wealth.
\n

\n
\n
1. Invesco QQQ ETF
\n
The Invesco QQQ ETF (NASDAQ:QQQ) tracks the Nasdaq 100 Index, meaning it includes 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq itself. Around half of the stocks in the fund are from tech companies, and some of the largest holdings include Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Tesla.
\n
Because this fund contains largely tech stocks, it does carry more risk -- but also more room for reward. Tech companies can be more volatile than organizations in other industries, but they're also known for their exponential growth.
\n
One advantage of this ETF is that it has a long track record. It was established in 1999, making it one of the oldest ETFs. Over the past 10 years, it's earned an average rate of return of nearly 20% per year. And since its inception in 1999, its average return is just over 9% per year.
\n
2. Schwab US Large-Cap Growth ETF
\n
The Schwab US Large-Cap Growth ETF (NYSEMKT:SCHG) tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Large-Cap Growth Total Stock Market Index. It includes 234 stocks from large companies experiencing faster-than-average growth.
\n
Because it contains a greater number of stocks, this fund provides more diversification than QQQ. Similar to QQQ, though, it's also focused primarily on the tech industry. Tech stocks make up nearly half of this fund's holdings, though it also includes stocks from a variety of other sectors, such as consumer discretionary, communication services, and healthcare.
\n
This ETF was launched in 2009, so it doesn't have as long a history as some other ETFs. However, since its inception, it's earned an average rate of return of around 17% per year.
\n
Considering we've been experiencing a phenomenal bull market over the past decade, that type of growth may not be sustainable over the next several decades. But because growth ETFs are designed to see above-average growth, this ETF may still earn substantial returns over time.
\n
3. Vanguard Russell 1000 Growth ETF
\n
The Vanguard Russell 1000 Growth ETF (NASDAQ:VONG) tracks the Russell 1000 Growth Index. It includes 501 stocks from a variety of industries, including technology, consumer discretionary, industrials, and healthcare.
\n
Of all the ETFs on the list, this fund includes the highest number of stocks and provides the most diversification. A more diversified portfolio can limit your risk, because your money is spread across a greater number of stocks.
\n
Established in 2010, this fund does have the shortest track record of the ETFs on the list. ETFs are also \"set it and forget it\" types of investments, and they perform best when you invest consistently and leave your money alone for as long as possible.\nGrowth ETFs are designed to include stocks with the potential for above-average returns, and they can be a fantastic option to supercharge your earnings. By investing in any of these three funds and holding them for as long as possible, you'll be on your way to generating long-term wealth.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Invesco QQQ ETF\nThe Invesco QQQ ETF (NASDAQ:QQQ) tracks the Nasdaq 100 Index, meaning it includes 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq itself. Around half of the stocks in the fund are from tech companies, and some of the largest holdings include Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Tesla.\nBecause this fund contains largely tech stocks, it does carry more risk -- but also more room for reward. Tech companies can be more volatile than organizations in other industries, but they're also known for their exponential growth.\nOne advantage of this ETF is that it has a long track record. It was established in 1999, making it one of the oldest ETFs. Over the past 10 years, it's earned an average rate of return of nearly 20% per year. And since its inception in 1999, its average return is just over 9% per year.\n2. Schwab US Large-Cap Growth ETF\nThe Schwab US Large-Cap Growth ETF (NYSEMKT:SCHG) tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Large-Cap Growth Total Stock Market Index. It includes 234 stocks from large companies experiencing faster-than-average growth.\nBecause it contains a greater number of stocks, this fund provides more diversification than QQQ. Similar to QQQ, though, it's also focused primarily on the tech industry. Tech stocks make up nearly half of this fund's holdings, though it also includes stocks from a variety of other sectors, such as consumer discretionary, communication services, and healthcare.\nThis ETF was launched in 2009, so it doesn't have as long a history as some other ETFs. However, since its inception, it's earned an average rate of return of around 17% per year.\nConsidering we've been experiencing a phenomenal bull market over the past decade, that type of growth may not be sustainable over the next several decades. But because growth ETFs are designed to see above-average growth, this ETF may still earn substantial returns over time.\n3. Vanguard Russell 1000 Growth ETF\nThe Vanguard Russell 1000 Growth ETF (NASDAQ:VONG) tracks the Russell 1000 Growth Index. It includes 501 stocks from a variety of industries, including technology, consumer discretionary, industrials, and healthcare.\nOf all the ETFs on the list, this fund includes the highest number of stocks and provides the most diversification. A more diversified portfolio can limit your risk, because your money is spread across a greater number of stocks.\nEstablished in 2010, this fund does have the shortest track record of the ETFs on the list. Since its inception, though, it's earned an average return of more than 18% per year. Again, you may not experience returns quite this high over time, but you could still see above-average earnings.\nChoosing the right stocks is critical when investing, and ETFs can make it easier to reduce your risk while maximizing your earnings. economic recovery fueling a risk-on rally.
\n
All three major U.S. stock indexes added to their previous session's advance, placing all three within 1% of their all-time closing highs.
\n
Economically sensitive smallcaps , semiconductors and financials outperformed the broader market.
\n
\"It’s a seesaw going on between great earnings and a recovering market and concerns over whether the economy is going to slow down because of the (COVID-19) Delta variant,\" said Peter Tuz, president of Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Virginia. \"But we’re seeing strong earnings with generally positive guidance, and the feeling that (the Delta variant) can be managed.\"
\n
A rebound in travel helped fuel United Airlines' revenue beat, boosting its stock by 3.8%.
\n
The S&P 1500 Airlines index gained 3.3%, while the S&P 1500 Hotels, Restaurant and Leisure index advanced 2.9%.
\n
\"Earlier in the week those stocks suffered because of renewed fears that travel will slow down and all related industries will suffer, but those fears have gone away,\" Tuz added. \"Demand is continuing as expected, I don’t think the Delta fear is causing people to change their plans.\"
\n
Benchmark U.S. Treasury yields continued their bounce from five-month lows following a weak 20-year bond auction, which benefited rate-sensitive banks.
\n
Wrangling in Washington over the passage of a bipartisan $1.2 trillion infrastructure package progressed as Senate Democrats moved toward a planned procedural vote despite Republican appeals for a delay.
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 286.01 points, or 0.83%, to 34,798, the S&P 500 gained 35.63 points, or 0.82%, to 4,358.69 and the Nasdaq Composite added 133.08 points, or 0.92%, to 14,631.95.
\n
Of the 11 major sectors in the S&P 500, energy stocks
\n
were the big winners, jumping 3.5% with the help of surging crude prices .
\n
Second-quarter reporting season has shifted into overdrive, with 73 of the companies in the S&P 500 having posted results. Of those, 88% have beaten consensus expectations.
\n
Among the winners, Chipotle Mexican Grill jumped 11.5% after the burrito chain beat earnings estimates and forecast strong current-quarter sales growth. The stock boasted the S&P 500's largest percentage gain.
\n
Coca-Cola rose 1.3% after raising its full-year forecast.
\n
Interpuplic Group of Companies jumped 11.3% in the wake of its upbeat earnings release.
\n
Drugmaker Johnson & Johnson forecast $2.5 billion in sales from its one-shot COVID vaccine this year and hiked its sales estimates. It closed up a modest 0.6%.
\n
On the losing side, Netflix Inc late Tuesday reported slowing subscriber growth, sending its shares down 3.3%, the second-largest percentage loser in the S&P 500.
\n
Harley-Davidson's second-quarter earnings release showed its turnaround plan appeared to be making progress, but the company lowered its operating income guidance due to tariffs from Europe, its second-biggest market. Its stock dropped 7.2%.
\n
Texas Instruments dipped more than 3% in extended trading following results posted after the bell.
\n
Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 2.92-to-1 ratio; Their market caps, not so much.\nThis past week, the world’s fiv","content":"
Their market caps, not so much.\nThis past week, the world’s five largest tech companies—Apple(ticker: AAPL),Microsoft(MSFT),Amazon.com(AMZN),Alphabet(GOOGL), andFacebook(FB)—all reported quarterly results. Their collective performance was astonishing. As a group, their revenue increased 36%, to $332 billion. These companies spent the pandemic making gobs of money.\nButinvestors were unimpressed. Here are the key takeaways from Big Tech’s huge earnings:\nThe pandemic boom is over. That’s not to say the pandemic itself is over—the Delta variant is wreaking havoc—but Americans have already made changes in their behavior, and those adjustments are having a major impact on the tech giants.\nIt starts with e-commerce. Olsavsky sees continued tough comparisons for Amazon—and midteens growth rates—for the next few quarters.\nApplebeat expectations in all of its segments, but growth is slowing there, too. Mac sales were up 16% in the June quarter, down from 70% growth three months earlier. iPad sales were up 12%, versus 79% in the March period. This is all still better than before the pandemic, but it suggests that the furious shopping spree for home offices and virtual schooling is coming to an end.Logitech(LOGI), which makes PC peripherals like mice and webcams, had 66% revenue growth in the June quarter, but it sees flat revenue for its fiscal year ending in March 2022.\nComponent shortages continue. This could take a while to fix.\nMeanwhile, Apple CEO Tim Cook said on the company’s earnings call that shipping costs are higher, too. Freight rates are at record levels, and the holiday merchandising season is fast approaching, adding to demand for freight capacity.\nOnline advertising is blazing hot.On a brighter note for investors, Alphabet’sad business grew 68% in the latest quarter, including an 84% jump in advertising at YouTube. Facebook’sad business grew 56%, driven by a 47% year-over-year increase in ad pricing. Alphabet told analysts that the biggest driver of ad growth was retail, with strong contributions from travel, financial services, and media and entertainment. People are shopping, eating out, and going on vacation, and that’s driving ads.\nCloud adoption is accelerating. The digital transformation trend that everyone in enterprise computing talks about is the real deal.
