A huge amount money is also being pumped into the nascent air-taxi&nbsp;industry by special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, a method of taking businesses public that’s all the rage in the U.S.</p>\n<p>There is, at least, something behind the investor excitement. Long considered a dream best left to “Blade Runner,” air taxis could soon become reality thanks to advances in batteries, software and lightweight materials.&nbsp;It helps thatstar fund manager Cathie Wood&nbsp;may include “drones, air taxis and electric aviation vehicles” in her new space-themed exchange-traded fund. Germany’s Volocopter and Lilium have also been linked toSPAC deals. Meanwhile,&nbsp;former Boeing Chief Executive Officer Dennis Muilenburg’s SPAC may pursue something in “advanced air mobility.”</p>\n<p>Letting SPAC targets publishmulti-year financial projections&nbsp;—&nbsp;no matter how wild — gives them a huge advantage because most are still in the development and testing stage. Traditional IPOs don’t allow this forecasting. In air taxis, getting the required regulatory permits could take years, which makes future profit estimates partly guesswork.&nbsp;Volocopter’s development is relatively well-advanced but it doesn’t expect to start commercial services in Singaporeuntil the end of 2023.</p>\n<p>SPAC-acquired Archer confidently projects it will havemore than $12 billion of revenue&nbsp;by 2030 and almost $3 billion of yearly free cash flow, even though it hasn’t yet manufactured or delivered any aircraft to customers. ValuAnalysis uses price as a multiple of normalized net free cash flow as its benchmark, and identifies the imaginary dividing line between value and growth stocks at 35x, which is the market median.</p>\n<p>The value vs. growth divide would suggest that a company trading at a 17x earnings multiple is undervalued. In reality, ValuAnalysis says it is likely a company that won't grow.</p>\n<p>In reality, a stock's value is based on the company's ability to grow free cash flow in an environment where the cost of capital is 5% to 6%. So if a company isn't outpacing that by improving revenue and margins, the multiple won't increase and the stock price is unlikely to rise.</p>\n<p>Stocks that are actually undervalued will trade between 25x and 35x free cash flow, Costantini says, outpacing the cost of capital but not breaking past the market median.</p>\n<p>To have potential, a company's accumulation of assets or revenue growth must outpace increases in global gross domestic product, and ideally show signs of accelerating. There must also be an increase in operational leverage through revenue or margins. Investors were piling into stocks with a large percent of their shares sold \"short\" and creating \"short squeezes,\" or driving traders on the other side of the bet to buy more stock to cover their losses.\nShort selling is a strategy in which investors borrow shares of a stock at a certain price in expectations that the market value will fall below that level when it's time to pay for the borrowed shares.\n\"It is also very difficult to believe that in this short squeeze, the buy side is completely driven by the retail and there is no institutions jumping in,\" he added: \"Institutions are not dumb right? They look at these short-squeeze opportunities, they can definitely go in there.\"\nRetail traders have been largely credited with spawning these rallies, especially investors in the WallStreetBets community on Reddit.
