The figure surpassed all economists’ forecasts. The median estimate was for 195,000 applications.

Continuing claims, which include people who have received unemployment benefits for a week or more and are a good indicator of how hard it is for people to find work after losing their job, surged 69,000 to 1.72 million in the week ended Feb. 25, the biggest jump since November 2021.

Despite the jump in claims, the labor market remains robust. Just two and a half months into the new year, shares have rallied over 20% -- though they still remain down over 20% from a year ago. This includes a jump higher following the company's earnings report for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023 (the three months ended January 2023, mostly corresponding to calendar year 2022).

Of far more importance than the last three months, though, was CrowdStrike's guidance for the year ahead. This cybersecurity leader is further cementing itself as an incredibly important player in the industry, and it's homing in on the cybersecurity pure-play revenue leaders Palo Alto Networks and Fortinet. It's been a rough go for CrowdStrike stock during the bear market. Is it finally time to start buying again?

A stellar conclusion to a nasty year

CrowdStrike's fiscal 2023 was challenging. With inflation coming in hot and the U.S. Federal Reserve aggressively raising rates to try to cool off the economy, the company kept up its rapid expansion. CrowdStrike closed out its fiscal 2023 with revenue of $637 million, up 48% year over year. Annualized recurring revenue (ARR), a metric used by subscription software-as-a-service businesses, grew 48% as well and ended January 2023 at $2.56 billion.

Net loss under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in the quarter was $47.5 million, compared to the net loss of $42 million a year ago. Free cash flow (an adjusted profit metric) was positive $210 million, up 65% year over year. Much of the discrepancy between the two metrics was due to employee stock-based compensation, which was $152 million in Q4. CrowdStrike doled out $92.6 million in stock-based comp in Q4 the year prior, so this rise wasn't exactly good news.

Nevertheless, on a per-share basis (which does include the dilutive effect of stock-based compensation), CrowdStrike continues to deliver profitable growth for its shareholders at a rapid pace. If free cash flow continues to scale higher, I expect management will begin returning some of it to shareholders via stock buybacks.

Data by YCharts.

This growth cycle for endpoint security shows no signs of slowing

Cybersecurity is a secular growth trend, and endpoint security (for devices, especially those remotely accessing an organization's data and apps) is an especially important market in today's mobile-first world. There's no end in sight for CrowdStrike's double-digit percentage growth.

For fiscal year 2024, management expects revenue to be $2.955 billion to $3.015 billion -- implying growth of 33% at the midpoint of guidance. CEO George Kurtz and the top team reiterated their goal to reach $5 billion in ARR by the end of fiscal year 2026, and for adjusted operating profit margin to reach at least 20% in fiscal year 2025. Adjusted operating margin was 16% this past year.

Time to buy this premium-priced stock?

After the quarterly update, CrowdStrike is valued at 43 times trailing-12-month free cash flow. It's significantly "cheaper" now than it has been most of the time the company has been public. It's still a premium, though, and the market is anticipating the company will achieve its lofty goals -- and shares are only a buy if you expect CrowdStrike to continue growing and maturing well beyond that point. Can it do so?

I think it could. Besides overall growth of cybersecurity in the coming decade, CrowdStrike and its large security software peers have been reporting customers are increasingly interested in consolidating their vendor list. Bundling services saves money and decreases the complexity of keeping an IT operation secure. CrowdStrike and its steadily expanding list of modules helps deliver on that goal.

In fact, Kurtz said on the earnings call that "emerging products" (like identity protection and LogScale) ARR grew 116% year over year at the end of the last fiscal year to $339 million. If those new products can continue to expand, it represents an incredible compounding growth opportunity for CrowdStrike -- not to mention an additive to profitability as those new products increase in operating efficiency.

For decades, the cybersecurity industry has been a complicated patchwork of companies addressing various niches of the IT world. Though I expect cyber software to remain fragmented, the market is ripe for consolidation and growth -- and CrowdStrike is well positioned to benefit. Issues like rising employee stock-based compensation remain, but the company has ways to deal with this over time. Here's Why","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2318209263","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"Palantir's Q4 profit should have investors celebrating.","content":"

The terms "big-data" and "digital transformation" are becoming a staple on the earnings calls of technology companies. There are a myriad of software tools that claim to possess the ability to integrate with other systems horizontally across an organization, synthesize loads of unstructured data, and use complex algorithms to derive actionable insights.

One such company is the ultra-secretive Palantir. Palantir was founded nearly two decades ago but has only been trading publicly since the end of 2020. Over the last couple of years, the company's CEO, Alex Karp, has certainly brought Palantir's name into more headlines.

While Palantir was historically known as a government contractor, the software giant has done an impressive job expanding into the private sector. Palantir's fourth-quarter 2022 earnings report contained several positive surprises, and now may be an opportune time to add its stock to your portfolio.

Palantir's growth story is intact

For the quarter and year ended Dec. 31, Palantir reported $509 million and $1.9 billion in revenue, respectively. These figures represented 18% and 24% year-over-year growth. Although these growth rates are impressive, it should be noted that Palantir missed its 30% annual growth target, which Karp has reiterated in the past on several occasions.

Despite the miss in its 30% top-line growth target, investors should not discount Palantir's accomplishments during 2022. Over the last several months, investors have heard top executives from Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon, among other Big Tech cohorts, all explain in detail that there are short-term cyclical challenges in the marketplace due to tightening corporate budgets, inflation, and fears of recession.

For this reason, many of these companies have resorted to layoffs in an effort to preserve capital runway. It should be noted that following the earnings call, Palantir had its own layoffs, reducing headcount by approximately 2%.

While layoffs are unfortunate, Palantir's earnings report contained one metric in particular that should have investors really excited. For the first time in company history, Palantir reported positive net income according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). For the quarter ended Dec. 31, net income was $31 million, which equated to $0.01 earnings per share (EPS).

Perhaps even more exciting is that management is expecting positive net income for the entire 2023 calendar year, per the earnings report.

It keeps getting better

Since Palantir's public debut, Wall Street skeptics have generally expressed concerns about it due to two factors: the company's reliance on large, lumpy government contracts, as well as high stock-based compensation packages.

Per the company's Q4 investor presentation, Palantir illustrated that while its U.S. government revenue grew 22% in 2022, its U.S. commercial revenue grew a whopping 67% to $335 million. Furthermore, total commercial revenue grew 29% to $834 million during 2022. By contrast, total revenue grew 19% annually to $1.1 billion. Investors can see that Palantir's private sector business is quickly approaching the same size of its legacy government segment in terms of absolute dollars.

In addition to the fast-growing commercial business, Palantir's stock-based compensation is also beginning to trend in the right direction. For the year ended Dec. 31, Palantir's total stock-based compensation was $565 million, compared to $778 million in 2021. When referencing stock-based compensation during the earnings call, CFO Dave Glazer stated:

This is a testament to our disciplined spending amid the macro uncertainty, as well as the normalization of our stock-based compensation expense overhang since becoming a public company. Stock-based compensation expense was down 38 million in the fourth quarter compared to the year-ago period and down 213 million compared to the year-ago period. As we look ahead to 2023, we will continue to exercise spend discipline across the company, pace hiring, while continuing to invest in high-priority areas, including in our product offerings, building out our go-to-market strategy, and technical roles.

Valuation is key

As of the time of this writing, Palantir has a market capitalization of $17 billion and trades at 8 times its trailing-12-month sales (P/S). Interestingly, the company's stock price has barely moved over the last six months.

Despite its original 30% top-line growth rate being at risk, Palantir investors should be encouraged by the company's expense discipline and its ability to generate a profit during times of slowing economic growth. It is certainly possible that Palantir's long-term revenue growth rate may average out to 30% in the following years, but investors should normalize their expectations for 2023 in particular.

Even so, consistent profitability coupled with a fast-growing commercial business should not be discounted. Palantir's fourth-quarter 2022 earnings report contained several positive surprises, and now may be an opportune time to add its stock to your portfolio.Palantir's growth story is intactFor the quarter and year ended Dec. 31, Palantir reported $509 million and $1.9 billion in revenue, respectively. These figures represented 18% and 24% year-over-year growth. Although these growth rates are impressive, it should be noted that Palantir missed its 30% annual growth target, which Karp has reiterated in the past on several occasions.Despite the miss in its 30% top-line growth target, investors should not discount Palantir's accomplishments during 2022. It should be noted that following the earnings call, Palantir had its own layoffs, reducing headcount by approximately 2%.While layoffs are unfortunate, Palantir's earnings report contained one metric in particular that should have investors really excited. For the first time in company history, Palantir reported positive net income according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). For the quarter ended Dec. 31, net income was $31 million, which equated to $0.01 earnings per share (EPS).Perhaps even more exciting is that management is expecting positive net income for the entire 2023 calendar year, per the earnings report. It keeps getting betterSince Palantir's public debut, Wall Street skeptics have generally expressed concerns about it due to two factors: the company's reliance on large, lumpy government contracts, as well as high stock-based compensation packages.Per the company's Q4 investor presentation, Palantir illustrated that while its U.S. government revenue grew 22% in 2022, its U.S. commercial revenue grew a whopping 67% to $335 million. When referencing stock-based compensation during the earnings call, CFO Dave Glazer stated:This is a testament to our disciplined spending amid the macro uncertainty, as well as the normalization of our stock-based compensation expense overhang since becoming a public company. Stock-based compensation expense was down 38 million in the fourth quarter compared to the year-ago period and down 213 million compared to the year-ago period. As we look ahead to 2023, we will continue to exercise spend discipline across the company, pace hiring, while continuing to invest in high-priority areas, including in our product offerings, building out our go-to-market strategy, and technical roles.Valuation is keyAs of the time of this writing, Palantir has a market capitalization of $17 billion and trades at 8 times its trailing-12-month sales (P/S). Interestingly, the company's stock price has barely moved over the last six months.Despite its original 30% top-line growth rate being at risk, Palantir investors should be encouraged by the company's expense discipline and its ability to generate a profit during times of slowing economic growth. It is certainly possible that Palantir's long-term revenue growth rate may average out to 30% in the following years, but investors should normalize their expectations for 2023 in particular.Even so, consistent profitability coupled with a fast-growing commercial business should not be discounted. For current shareholders, now is an opportune time to lower your cost basis. Moreover, for long-term investors, Palantir's current valuation is almost too good to pass up given the company's bullish outlook.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":390,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9957983168,"gmtCreate":1676894772255,"gmtModify":1676894775173,"author":{"id":"3565099806679305","authorId":"3565099806679305","name":"PowerUP","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/df9a5cf3108bf10df6890793c18e2e37","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3565099806679305","idStr":"3565099806679305"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GRAND VENTURE TECHNOLOGY LTD(JLB.SI)$ [Call] [Call] [Call] ","listText":"$GRAND VENTURE TECHNOLOGY LTD(JLB.SI)$ [Call] [Call] [Call] ","text":"$GRAND VENTURE TECHNOLOGY LTD(JLB.SI)$ [Call] [Call] [Call]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9957983168","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":378,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9957931646,"gmtCreate":1676874276285,"gmtModify":1676874280282,"author":{"id":"3565099806679305","authorId":"3565099806679305","name":"PowerUP","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/df9a5cf3108bf10df6890793c18e2e37","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3565099806679305","idStr":"3565099806679305"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$HAFARY HOLDINGS LIMITED(5VS.SI)$ [Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","listText":"$HAFARY HOLDINGS LIMITED(5VS.SI)$ [Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","text":"$HAFARY HOLDINGS LIMITED(5VS.SI)$ [Miser] [Miser] [Miser]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9957931646","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":452,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9954295751,"gmtCreate":1676375415073,"gmtModify":1676375418521,"author":{"id":"3565099806679305","authorId":"3565099806679305","name":"PowerUP","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/df9a5cf3108bf10df6890793c18e2e37","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3565099806679305","idStr":"3565099806679305"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ PLTR, RBT, IOT [Love] ","listText":"$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ PLTR, RBT, IOT [Love] ","text":"$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ PLTR, RBT, IOT [Love]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9954295751","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":209,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9955890276,"gmtCreate":1675311727096,"gmtModify":1676538992040,"author":{"id":"3565099806679305","authorId":"3565099806679305","name":"PowerUP","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/df9a5cf3108bf10df6890793c18e2e37","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3565099806679305","idStr":"3565099806679305"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Alset International Ltd(40V.SI)$ jack of all trades but all lose money? At an industry level, Chinese vehicle manufacturers XPEV andNIOmanaged to manufacture the expected numbers of vehicle deliveries, despite much feared chip shortages.XPEV chalked in record quarterly deliveries of 13,340 EVs in Q1 2021, +487% over the year and +130% over the month in March.NIO delivered 20,060 +423% over the year while Q1 deliveries rose 15.6% to 20,060. The challenge these EV manufacturers face now is not so much the ability to deliver on its numbers, but on being able to meet high expectations for the stock price to gain further traction.
\n
Government support, China's creation of an EV ecosystem.XPEV's strong deliveries describe not only excellent support from the private sector, but also the Chinese government's push to develop this part of its industry. XPEV has entered into an agreement with the city of Wuhan to build a factory with a capacity of 100,000 EV units. This is a very significant piece of news, considering its deliveries of just 5,102 in March 2021. Annualizing this number, the new capacity will be more than the whole of XPEV's total historical annual production. This news is interesting and significant since it was just released this week, suggesting it may have yet to be factored into analysts' forecast numbers. This is made more important as XPEV has always been considered a laggard in production capabilities to its larger cousin NIO. General Chinese government support for the EV ecosystem is strong, and the new facility in Wuhan echoes earlier provincial government financial support ($77m) in Guangdong. The reality is, for EVs to gain traction, government willingness to support infrastructure initiatives are highly important (e.g. permits for charging stations, creating incentives to convert from old polluting vehicles to green vehicles, etc.). With China's tradition of central planning, the EV ecosystem is placed on the right footing.
\n
Listing in Hong Kong adds to investor base and liquidity.Going forward,XPEV,NIO, and LI intend tolistin Hong Kong this year. This is a strategic move, and makes the valuation of these companies less susceptible by US political bashing (e.g. the threat of being de-listed) should it occur, since it reflects a wider geographical base. The valuations of these companies may even get a boost given greater global liquidity due to added trading in the Asian time zone.
\n
\n
Of note, in late March, XPEV held an autonomous driving expedition covering eight cities in China and 3,675 kilometers. The exercise was successful, as minimal human intervention was needed during the expedition and adds another brownie point to XPEV's research and development efforts, placing XPEV on the competitive landscape against rivals such as TSLA and NIO on autonomous driving. Apparently, XPEV's autonomous driving results performed better than TSLA's with fewer human interventions per 100km and better navigation in complex situations.
\n
XPEV's improving financials
\n
Now that we have several quarters of financial data on XPEV, it is worth reviewing how its metrics have been performing. Firstly, market expectations aside, deliveries have been very good as abovementioned, and this is flowing through to revenue numbers. As shown in the below table, growth has been very strong, and revenues are expected to more than double in 2021 and continue to double in 2022. Such growth rates place XPEV at the top end of manufacturing firms, as expected of the fast-growing EV market.
\n
Another point to note is the improvement in operating margins. As with any \"new tech\" company, initial investments would cause hugely negative operating margins in the beginning. What's important is the company's ability to improve margins and reduce costs over time. In this respect, XPEV has done a good job, with operating margins improving sequentially each quarter. Of note, operating margins started to see major improvements between the Jun-2020 (-142%) and Dec-2020 (-39%) quarters as shown in the table below. Given this trend, the company is likely to breakeven and register positive profits soon, which could be a catalytic re-rating for XPEV. When we pair this analysis with the stock price, it appears that XPEV's recently soft stock price performance is not justified.
\n
Meanwhile, the balance sheet is expected to remain strong. Equity to total liabilities & equity is 23% as at Dec-2020. As abovementioned, further capital raises with a forthcoming Hong Kong listing will add to XPEV's cash buffer.
\n
XPEV's performance improvement in both revenue and operating margin trends appear to have been ignored by the market due to recent the broad market capitulation
\n
*EST = estimate by analysts' consensus from SeekingAlpha
\n
XPEV's valuation: somewhere in the middle
\n
XPEV's stock price has done well over the last 6 months versus peers. However, there could be a general re-rating of the P/S of the sector if the Chinese EV manufacturers reach breakeven in 2021 and record positive profits (our base case belief, given the prevailing trend in XPEV's improving operating margins). Many special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) also soared after announcing plans to merge with smaller EV makers or EV technology companies.
\n
That buying frenzy was supported by a new breed of Robinhood investors, who got many of their investing ideas from Reddit forums and aggressive growth investors like Cathie Wood, who holds Tesla as the top position in her flagship ARK Innovation ETF.
\n
However, many investors who chased those rallies were punished over the past three months, as rising bond yields sparked a rapid rotation from growth to value stocks. Many high-growth tech stocks also plummeted as investors pivoted from pandemic growth stories to reopening plays.
\n
It might be tempting to buy some of those EV stocks after the recent sell-off. However, I believe it's safer to invest in diversified tech companies that will profit from the expansion of the EV market but aren't completely tethered to its future. Here are three stocks that fit the bill: Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU), NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), and NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ:NXPI).
\n
\n
1. Baidu
\n
Baidu, which owns the top search engine in China, generates most of its revenue from ads. This core business has struggled over the past two years due to competition, slower economic growth in China, tighter restrictions on certain types of ads, and the pandemic.
\n
However, Baidu expects its advertising business to recover this year as China's economic growth stabilizes, pandemic-stricken sectors recover, and it expands its ecosystem with new services (such as Mini Programs for its mobile app and its DuerOS voice assistant).
\n
As Baidu's advertising business recovers, it will continue to expand Apollo, its open-source software platform for autonomous cars. Apollo has already secured over 100 global partners and is the technical foundation for its robotaxi and autonomous EV businesses.
\n
Baidu launched a new EV joint venture with the Chinese automaker Geely earlier this year and recently appointed Wei Dong, the former CEO of the ride-hailing company Shouqi Yueche, to commercialize its Apollo software. Those efforts, along with Baidu's plans to launch more Apollo-powered vehicles this year, could finally enable the tech giant to generate meaningful revenue from its automotive business.
\n
2. NVIDIA
\n
One of Baidu's top Apollo partners is NVIDIA, which is primarily known for its gaming and data center GPUs, but it also sells automotive chips.
\n
\n
NVIDIA's Arm-based Tegra CPUs power infotainment and navigation systems for high-end automakers like Audi and Lamborghini. They also power its Drive onboard computers for autonomous vehicles.
\n
NVIDIA generated 3% of its revenue from automotive chips last quarter. That's just a tiny sliver of its business, and the unit faced severe headwinds last year as the pandemic disrupted the production of new vehicles. The global semiconductor shortage could further delay that recovery.
\n
But after those headwinds wane, NVIDIA's automotive business should recover and gradually account for a larger slice of its revenue. Until then, NVIDIA should continue to generate high double-digit percentage revenue and earnings growth as it sells more gaming and data center GPUs.
\n
3. NXP Semiconductors
\n
NXP, one of Europe's largest chipmakers, is often overlooked in discussions about driverless and electric vehicles. However, the Dutch company became the world's largest automotive chipmaker six years ago after acquiring its rival Freescale.
\n
NXP's automotive business, which accounted for 44% of its revenue last year, suffered a slowdown last year and offset the growth of its industrial IoT (Internet of Things) and mobile chip businesses. The softness of its communication infrastructure business exacerbated that slowdown.
\n
But this year, analysts expect NXP's revenue and earnings to increase 23% and 58%, respectively, as its auto business recovers.
\n
That outlook seems rosy, but the chip shortage could still throttle NXP's recovery by delaying shipments of new cars. Many special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) also soared after announcing plans to merge with smaller EV makers or EV technology companies.\nThat buying frenzy was supported by a new breed of Robinhood investors, who got many of their investing ideas from Reddit forums and aggressive growth investors like Cathie Wood, who holds Tesla as the top position in her flagship ARK Innovation ETF.\nHowever, many investors who chased those rallies were punished over the past three months, as rising bond yields sparked a rapid rotation from growth to value stocks. Many high-growth tech stocks also plummeted as investors pivoted from pandemic growth stories to reopening plays.\nIt might be tempting to buy some of those EV stocks after the recent sell-off. However, I believe it's safer to invest in diversified tech companies that will profit from the expansion of the EV market but aren't completely tethered to its future. Here are three stocks that fit the bill: Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU), NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), and NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ:NXPI).\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Baidu\nBaidu, which owns the top search engine in China, generates most of its revenue from ads. This core business has struggled over the past two years due to competition, slower economic growth in China, tighter restrictions on certain types of ads, and the pandemic.\nHowever, Baidu expects its advertising business to recover this year as China's economic growth stabilizes, pandemic-stricken sectors recover, and it expands its ecosystem with new services (such as Mini Programs for its mobile app and its DuerOS voice assistant).\nAs Baidu's advertising business recovers, it will continue to expand Apollo, its open-source software platform for autonomous cars. Apollo has already secured over 100 global partners and is the technical foundation for its robotaxi and autonomous EV businesses.\nBaidu launched a new EV joint venture with the Chinese automaker Geely earlier this year and recently appointed Wei Dong, the former CEO of the ride-hailing company Shouqi Yueche, to commercialize its Apollo software. Those efforts, along with Baidu's plans to launch more Apollo-powered vehicles this year, could finally enable the tech giant to generate meaningful revenue from its automotive business.\n2. NVIDIA\nOne of Baidu's top Apollo partners is NVIDIA, which is primarily known for its gaming and data center GPUs, but it also sells automotive chips.\nImage source: NVIDIA.\nNVIDIA's Arm-based Tegra CPUs power infotainment and navigation systems for high-end automakers like Audi and Lamborghini. They also power its Drive onboard computers for autonomous vehicles.\nNVIDIA generated 3% of its revenue from automotive chips last quarter. That's just a tiny sliver of its business, and the unit faced severe headwinds last year as the pandemic disrupted the production of new vehicles. The global semiconductor shortage could further delay that recovery.\nBut after those headwinds wane, NVIDIA's automotive business should recover and gradually account for a larger slice of its revenue. Until then, NVIDIA should continue to generate high double-digit percentage revenue and earnings growth as it sells more gaming and data center GPUs.\n3. NXP Semiconductors\nNXP, one of Europe's largest chipmakers, is often overlooked in discussions about driverless and electric vehicles. However, the Dutch company became the world's largest automotive chipmaker six years ago after acquiring its rival Freescale.\nNXP's automotive business, which accounted for 44% of its revenue last year, suffered a slowdown last year and offset the growth of its industrial IoT (Internet of Things) and mobile chip businesses. The softness of its communication infrastructure business exacerbated that slowdown.\nBut this year, analysts expect NXP's revenue and earnings to increase 23% and 58%, respectively, as its auto business recovers.\nThat outlook seems rosy, but the chip shortage could still throttle NXP's recovery by delaying shipments of new cars. NXP manufactures most of its own chips, but it outsources some of its production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the world's top contract chipmaker. As a result, its long-term recovery could still partly depend on TSMC's ability to boost its capacity and stabilize the global chip market.\nThat being said, NXP remains a balanced play for conservative investors who want some exposure to the automotive chip market but don't want to take outsized risks on speculative EV makers and SPACs.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":34,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":348125444,"gmtCreate":1617895472588,"gmtModify":1704704586633,"author":{"id":"3565099806679305","authorId":"3565099806679305","name":"PowerUP","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/df9a5cf3108bf10df6890793c18e2e37","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3565099806679305","authorIdStr":"3565099806679305"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Comment and like","listText":"Comment and like","text":"Comment and like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/348125444","repostId":"1147253336","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1147253336","pubTimestamp":1617884605,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1147253336?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-08 20:23","market":"us","language":"en","title":"4 Popular Meme Stocks That Aren’t Worth the Hype","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1147253336","media":"InvestorPlace","summary":"These companies cannot justify the sharp increase in their share price. Of course, many people have lost money as these meme stocks skyrocket and then crash and burn in quick succession.
\n
Here are four of the most popular meme stocks that aren’t worth the hype.
\n
\n
BlackBerry(NYSE:BB)
\n
Zomedica(NYSEAMERICAN:ZOM)
\n
Koss(NASDAQ:KOSS)
\n
Churchill Capital IV(NYSE:CCIV)
\n
\n
Meme Stocks to Avoid: BlackBerry (BB)
\n
It’s been nearly 15 years since BlackBerry was a significant technology company.
\n
The once-dominant Canadian smartphone manufacturer was knocked off its perch when Apple(NASDAQ:APPL) debuted the iPhone back in 2007.
\n
As a glut of other competitors entered the market, BlackBerry was forced to abandon smartphones altogether, although it still licenses its name to a small percentage of phones manufactured and sold in Asia.
\n
Today, BlackBerry has reinvented itself as an enterprise software and the Internet of Things (IoT) company. BlackBerry focuses much of its resources these days on making software for self-driving vehicles.
\n
However, the reinvention has only been mildly successful. BlackBerry continues to struggle in markets outside its native Canada and the company’s financial results continue to underwhelm investors. At the end of March, BlackBerry reported a$315-million lossfor its fiscal fourth quarter. Revenue for the quarter came in at $210 million, down from $282 million the previous year.
\n
BB stock has been a disappointment too, barely moving over the past year. However, the stock spiked 237% in January when it briefly became one of the meme stocks and targeted by r/WallStreetBets. The jump was short lived, of course, and today the stock is back down to $8.60 a share, about the same level it was at toward the end of 2020.
\n
Still, January’s sharp move higher prompted several BlackBerry executives to sell their stock in the company. Other shareholders should do the same.
\n
Zomedica (ZOM)
\n
There’s no question that people love their pets, and that love seems to have only grown stronger during the pandemic as people stayed home with their cats and dogs.
\n
Just because people love their pets doesn’t mean they should gamble on animal healthcare company Zomedica. In many ways Zomedica is a classic meme stock, the type of unproven, completely speculative bet the WallStreetBets crowd loves to champion and push higher.
\n
This accounts for why ZOM stock gained 731% between Jan. 4 and Feb. 8 of this year, rising from just $0.35 to a peak of $2.91.
\n
Make no mistake, there was nothing to justify the move upwards in ZOM stock other than irrational exuberance.
\n
Consider that Zomedica didn’t earn any revenue in 2020. Zilch. On top of that, Zomedica posted a net loss of nearly $17 million for last year.
\n
The company has all of its eggs placed in its“Truforma” platform, an animal diagnostic tool that it hopes to sell to veterinarians across the U.S.
\n
While Zomedica forecasts that the animal diagnostics market could be worth $5.4 billion by 2026, there’s no indication that it will get a large share of that market.
\n
ZOM stock is currently trading at $1.46 a share, down 50% from its February high. Buyer beware!
\n
Meme Stocks to Avoid: Koss (KOSS)
\n
Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Koss, which designs and manufactures headphones, has had a wilder ride than most meme stocks this year.
\n
On Jan. 15, KOSS stock closed the trading day at $2.90 a share. On the 29, the stock finished trading at $64. That’s an increase of 2,107% in a two week span. At one point, the stock hit an intra-day high of $127.45 per share.
\n
By late February, Koss’ share price had crashed down to $11.90 and today the stock is worth $23.20 a share. The gigantic price moves have gotten Koss labelled as a prototypical meme stock, with critics saying that it has been pumped and dumped several times by the Reddit mob.
\n
There hasn’t been much to push KOSS stock higher beyond it being targeted on social media. Koss is a completely average company.
\n
While its headphones are functional and garner generally favourable reviews, the company struggles to compete in the space against titans such as Apple and Sony (NYSE:SONY),and Koss is far from being a household name: Beats by Dre they ain’t.
\n
In fact, Koss has been in business since 1958 and even filed for bankruptcy back in 1984. The company has always struggled to maintain market share. It has consistently been a penny stock since the mid-1980s, and there’s no reason to believe that it can maintain its current lofty valuation over the long-term.
\n
Churchill Capital IV (CCIV)
\n
Among special purpose acquisition companies (SPAC), Churchill Capital IV stands out for all the wrong reasons.
\n
Before the shell company announced the target it planned to merge with and bring public, CCIV stock rose 547% based solely on wild speculation. After cresting at a high of $64.86 on Feb. 18, the stock has come down 63% and is now stuck under $25.
\n
Ironically, the share price crashed after Churchill Capital announced on Feb. 22 that it would merge with electric vehicle maker Lucid Motors, a company that many analysts views as viable competitor to market leader Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA).
\n
The same investors who were keen to pump up CCIV stock seemed equally eager to sell once the Lucid Motors deal was formally announced. A broad rotation out of technology stocks and mounting fatigue over the sheer number of SPAC deals coming to market this year didn’t help matters.
\n
It remains to be seen if Lucid Motors stock will ultimately be successful once it begins trading under the ticker symbol“LCID” by June 30 of this year, subject to shareholder approval of the deal. But, for now, Churchill Capital IV seems to have become one of the meme stocks that investors should avoid.
","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
4 Popular Meme Stocks That Aren’t Worth the Hype
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n4 Popular Meme Stocks That Aren’t Worth the Hype\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-08 20:23 GMT+8 InvestorPlace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
These companies cannot justify the sharp increase in their share price\nSource: Marcus Krauss / Shutterstock.com\nMeme stocks have exhausted investors this year, and we’re only through the first quarter...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"GME":"游戏驿站","AMC":"AMC院线","KOSS":"高斯电子","ZOM":"Zomedica Pharmaceuticals Corp.","BB":"黑莓"},"source_url":"https://investorplace.com/2021/04/4-popular-meme-stocks-that-arent-worth-the-hype/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1147253336","content_text":"These companies cannot justify the sharp increase in their share price\nSource: Marcus Krauss / Shutterstock.com\nMeme stocks have exhausted investors this year, and we’re only through the first quarter.\nRetail investors have taken to social media sites such as r/WallStreetBets on Reddit to work themselves and others into an irrational frenzy over stocks that they then pump up to unreasonable and unsustainable levels.\nFrom outdated retailers such as GameStop (NYSE:GME) to companies teetering on the edge of insolvency such as movie theatre chain AMC(NYSE:AMC), these stocks do not have the underlying fundamentals to justify share price increases of 100% or more.\nThe irrational nature of the stocks being targeted is what seems to make them appealing to the Reddit crowds. After cresting at a high of $64.86 on Feb. 18, the stock has come down 63% and is now stuck under $25.\nIronically, the share price crashed after Churchill Capital announced on Feb. 22 that it would merge with electric vehicle maker Lucid Motors, a company that many analysts views as viable competitor to market leader Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA).\nThe same investors who were keen to pump up CCIV stock seemed equally eager to sell once the Lucid Motors deal was formally announced. A broad rotation out of technology stocks and mounting fatigue over the sheer number of SPAC deals coming to market this year didn’t help matters.\nIt remains to be seen if Lucid Motors stock will ultimately be successful once it begins trading under the ticker symbol“LCID” by June 30 of this year, subject to shareholder approval of the deal. But, for now, Churchill Capital IV seems to have become one of the meme stocks that investors should avoid.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":55,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
