Reason will tell you to sell.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>I’ve written two articles recently for Seeking Alpha on AMC Entertainment Holdings(NYSE:AMC), one onJune 4and one onJune 17. The comments I have gotten back in response to the articles were eye-opening for me. I feel like I’ve been let into a world I didn’t know existed. Which means that I also must seem pretty odd to the inhabitants of this ape-world. So, I’d like to explain my point of view in this open letter.</p>\n<p><b>Why I keep harping on AMC’s earnings</b></p>\n<p>One shocker to me is that literally<i>no</i>comment that disagreed with my AMC view ever challenged me on earnings. The same is true for comments on my sell calls on Zillow(NASDAQ:Z), Redfin(NASDAQ:RDFN), Rocket Companies(NYSE:RKT)and Opendoor(NASDAQ:OPEN). So, why do I keep talking about earnings?<i>Because that’s how stocks work.</i>First, common sense says that it works. A share of stock is a share ownership of a company; that’s just a fact. We start and own businesses in order to earn money.</p>\n<p>Second, history says that the relationship between earnings and stock prices exists. A few charts will illustrate this point. First, let’s compare the S&amp;P 500 index with S&amp;P 500 EPS a year ahead:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d09e129752eec6290923863d17249487\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"426\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><i>Sources:Yahoo Finance,Yardeni Research</i></p>\n<p>The stock market clearly moves with earnings expectations. Now, let’s look at an individual stock. I chose McDonald’s(NYSE:MCD):</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/092d5bc6eb84253ba4ae6fea1f92113f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"430\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><i>Sources:Yahoo Finance,company reports</i></p>\n<p>Once again, a clear correlation – McDonald’s earns more, investors pay more to own it. Let’s now turn to a company whose earnings prospects took a turn – GoPro(NASDAQ:GPRO):</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6cb1e3a96d4e6e70cc8cb8dbc3b4643f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"431\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><i>Sources:Yahoo Finance,company reports</i></p>\n<p>GoPro’s stock price leaped after its IPO on the assumption that booming sales of its cameras would send earnings soaring above its 2014 EPS of $1.32. But smartphones – the cameras in our pockets – diverted sales away from GoPro, and its EPS took a serious slide into negative territory. In response, the stock tanked. It has only recently made a modest recovery as GoPro management managed to start earning money.<i>Again, a clear link between earnings and the stock price</i>.</p>\n<p>OK, one more – company X:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f3b9e1ded9a66995ca17edc221ddd9a6\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><i>Sources:Yahoo Finance,company reports</i></p>\n<p>Another excellent correlation between earnings and stock price. This company saw some EPS growth during 2015 and 2016, but earnings then turned south. The stock price followed.</p>\n<p>Who is this company X? I bet you guessed it – AMC!<i>Up until the pandemic hit, AMC’s stock performed like other stocks – on earnings expectations. It will again.</i></p>\n<p><b>Do you want to own an AMC theater?</b></p>\n<p>Instead of owning AMC stock, how about if you owned an AMC theater? This way, you are a real business owner.</p>\n<p>At last look, AMC’s market cap is $30.5 billion. Add in about $3.5 billion of debt less cash and we’ll say that AMC’s theaters are currently valued at $34 billion. At the beginning of this year, AMC had 950 movie theaters. That means, each theater is valued today at $36 million.</p>\n<p>If you don’t borrow money to pay your $36 million, my best guess from AMC’s financials is that you’ll rake in $220,000 in profits. Not bad, right? A cool 0.6% return on your investment. A return likely to shrink over time as we spend more time streaming and less time at the movies. Or you could buy more current favorite stock MGIC(NYSE:MTG), which last year generatedcash EPS of $2.45, an 18% return on its current stock price. But you would have to give up the free movie tickets from owning a theater. Your choice. I’ve gone for the latter. 18% &gt; 0.6%.</p>\n<p><b>Is it really different this time?</b></p>\n<p>Will AMC stock continue to rise just because apes continue to put more and more money in it? Can AMC become a permanent short squeeze?</p>\n<p>I’m old. While that means my tennis game is sinking, it also has allowed me to see lots of “it’s different this time” stories. They almost never work. Gravity takes over and brings magical beliefs back to earth. The ‘80s commercial real estate boom, the ‘90s internet boom, the ‘00s housing boom, all relied on broad-based beliefs that this time was different, and if you didn’t agree, “you don’t get it”. Gravity brought all three beliefs painfully back to earth. Betting against gravity is a serious long shot.</p>\n<p><b>Is the stock market fixed?</b></p>\n<p>Lots of the comments to my articles suggested that meme investing is revenge against a financial system fixed against the little guy and gal. I consider myself to be pretty cynical, but I can’t see the stock market as a whole as fixed. Some evidence:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><i>The link I established above between earnings and stock prices.</i>This means that, in the long run, it is company performance that determines stock prices, not Wall Street.</li>\n <li><i>Mutual funds routinely underperform index funds.</i>Big fund complexes like BlackRock, T. Rowe Price and Fidelity all have highly paid analysts and portfolio managers running their money. But many studies have shown that they generally do<i>worse</i>than market averages. So, they are no better than we are.</li>\n <li><i>Hedge funds have done even worse.</i>For example,NASDAQreported that the average hedge fund earned 11% in 2020, well below the S&amp;P 500 18% return. And they did far worse in 2019 – up 10% compared to +31% for the S&amp;P 500. My belief is that hedge funds have too much money chasing a small group of trades. Now, hedge fund<i>managers</i>can make obscene amounts of money because of their lucrative 2%/20% compensation structure. That’s another story. But hedge fund investors have been left behind.</li>\n <li><i>Wall Street is blanketed with regulations aimed at levelling the playing field.</i>There are rules against insider trading, selectively disseminating material information and many other forms of bad behavior. Of course, smart people can and do slip by some rules, but rampant cheating is quite difficult to achieve.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>Are short sellers lying to support their positions?</b></p>\n<p>There certainly are cases of this, but a far simpler answer explains why GameStop(NYSE:GME)and AMC are short targets. Come on – both are store-based businesses in an increasingly online world, right? With several years of losses behind them already. Blockbuster, Sears, Pier One… shorting the Old Economy is not rocket science.</p>\n<p>But how are potential investors in these New Age companies supposed to deal with these dramatic claims?</p>\n<p>Zillow. From its10-K:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “ \n <i>As we continue to expand into transaction-related services, our Total Addressable Market [TAM] has expanded from $19 billion in U.S. real estate related advertising…to $2.2 trillion of annual home sales…</i>”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Sounds awesome, right? $2.2&nbsp;<i>trillion</i>&nbsp;of potential revenues for Zillow. Except if home sellers expect to keep some of the proceeds of their home sales. In fact, the average real estate commission is 4.5%, giving Zillow an actual TAM of $100 billion. $100 billion &lt; $2.2 trillion. By a<i>lot.</i></p>\n<p>Rocket Mortgage. From itsQ1 earnings conference call:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “ \n <i>As we continue to expand our platform, creating certainty for clients in categories that have historically been challenging, the opportunity for Rocket Companies is gigantic. Consider this; when combined real estate, automotive sales and financial services, all markets where we're helping to lead the way, account for nearly one third of the US GDP</i>.” (My highlighting)\n</blockquote>\n<p>Wow! Amazon&nbsp;(NASDAQ:AMZN)&nbsp;will soon be a blip in Rocket’s rear-view mirror if I believe any of this. By the way, check out Rocket’s insider sales while management is dishing out this hype.</p>\n<p><b>Emotions versus reason</b></p>\n<p>I see a lot of anger, frustration, and revenge in the AMC comments. Life stinks a lot, so I get the rationale for these emotions. But I have learned that emotions are the enemy of successful investing.<i>Any</i>emotions, ranging from fear to enthusiasm. Rational thinking about a company’s value, or even (not my style) investors’ moods, has proven to work better.</p>\n<p>All of us primates, human and ape, are heavily driven by emotions (even me!), so we are never going to squeeze all of them out of our investment decisions. But the more squeezing, the better.</p>\n<p><b>All of the above says “Sell AMC”</b></p>\n<ul>\n <li>AMC’s earnings prospects can’t come close to supporting the current stock price. So, I’d like to explain my point of view in this open letter.\nWhy I keep harping on AMC’s earnings\nOne shocker to me is that literallynocomment that disagreed with my AMC view ever challenged me on earnings. The same is true for comments on my sell calls on Zillow(NASDAQ:Z), Redfin(NASDAQ:RDFN), Rocket Companies(NYSE:RKT)and Opendoor(NASDAQ:OPEN). So, why do I keep talking about earnings?Because that’s how stocks work.First, common sense says that it works. A share of stock is a share ownership of a company; that’s just a fact. We start and own businesses in order to earn money.\nSecond, history says that the relationship between earnings and stock prices exists. A few charts will illustrate this point. First, let’s compare the S&P 500 index with S&P 500 EPS a year ahead:\n\nSources:Yahoo Finance,Yardeni Research\nThe stock market clearly moves with earnings expectations. Now, let’s look at an individual stock. I chose McDonald’s(NYSE:MCD):\n\nSources:Yahoo Finance,company reports\nOnce again, a clear correlation – McDonald’s earns more, investors pay more to own it. Let’s now turn to a company whose earnings prospects took a turn – GoPro(NASDAQ:GPRO):\n\nSources:Yahoo Finance,company reports\nGoPro’s stock price leaped after its IPO on the assumption that booming sales of its cameras would send earnings soaring above its 2014 EPS of $1.32. But smartphones – the cameras in our pockets – diverted sales away from GoPro, and its EPS took a serious slide into negative territory. In response, the stock tanked. It has only recently made a modest recovery as GoPro management managed to start earning money.Again, a clear link between earnings and the stock price.\nOK, one more – company X:\n\nSources:Yahoo Finance,company reports\nAnother excellent correlation between earnings and stock price. This company saw some EPS growth during 2015 and 2016, but earnings then turned south. The stock price followed.\nWho is this company X? I bet you guessed it – AMC!Up until the pandemic hit, AMC’s stock performed like other stocks – on earnings expectations. It will again.\nDo you want to own an AMC theater?\nInstead of owning AMC stock, how about if you owned an AMC theater? This way, you are a real business owner.\nAt last look, AMC’s market cap is $30.5 billion. Add in about $3.5 billion of debt less cash and we’ll say that AMC’s theaters are currently valued at $34 billion. At the beginning of this year, AMC had 950 movie theaters. That means, each theater is valued today at $36 million.\nIf you don’t borrow money to pay your $36 million, my best guess from AMC’s financials is that you’ll rake in $220,000 in profits. Not bad, right? A cool 0.6% return on your investment. A return likely to shrink over time as we spend more time streaming and less time at the movies. Or you could buy more current favorite stock MGIC(NYSE:MTG), which last year generatedcash EPS of $2.45, an 18% return on its current stock price. But you would have to give up the free movie tickets from owning a theater. Your choice. I’ve gone for the latter. 18% > 0.6%.\nIs it really different this time?\nWill AMC stock continue to rise just because apes continue to put more and more money in it? Can AMC become a permanent short squeeze?\nI’m old. While that means my tennis game is sinking, it also has allowed me to see lots of “it’s different this time” stories. They almost never work. Gravity takes over and brings magical beliefs back to earth. The ‘80s commercial real estate boom, the ‘90s internet boom, the ‘00s housing boom, all relied on broad-based beliefs that this time was different, and if you didn’t agree, “you don’t get it”. Gravity brought all three beliefs painfully back to earth. Betting against gravity is a serious long shot.\nIs the stock market fixed?\nLots of the comments to my articles suggested that meme investing is revenge against a financial system fixed against the little guy and gal. I consider myself to be pretty cynical, but I can’t see the stock market as a whole as fixed. Some evidence:\n\nThe link I established above between earnings and stock prices.This means that, in the long run, it is company performance that determines stock prices, not Wall Street.\nMutual funds routinely underperform index funds.Big fund complexes like BlackRock, T. Rowe Price and Fidelity all have highly paid analysts and portfolio managers running their money. But many studies have shown that they generally doworsethan market averages. So, they are no better than we are.\nHedge funds have done even worse.For example,NASDAQreported that the average hedge fund earned 11% in 2020, well below the S&P 500 18% return. And they did far worse in 2019 – up 10% compared to +31% for the S&P 500. My belief is that hedge funds have too much money chasing a small group of trades. Now, hedge fundmanagerscan make obscene amounts of money because of their lucrative 2%/20% compensation structure. That’s another story. But hedge fund investors have been left behind.\nWall Street is blanketed with regulations aimed at levelling the playing field.There are rules against insider trading, selectively disseminating material information and many other forms of bad behavior. Of course, smart people can and do slip by some rules, but rampant cheating is quite difficult to achieve.\n\nAre short sellers lying to support their positions?\nThere certainly are cases of this, but a far simpler answer explains why GameStop(NYSE:GME)and AMC are short targets. Come on – both are store-based businesses in an increasingly online world, right? With several years of losses behind them already. Blockbuster, Sears, Pier One… shorting the Old Economy is not rocket science.\nBut how are potential investors in these New Age companies supposed to deal with these dramatic claims?\nZillow. From its10-K:\n\n “ \n As we continue to expand into transaction-related services, our Total Addressable Market [TAM] has expanded from $19 billion in U.S. real estate related advertising…to $2.2 trillion of annual home sales…”\n\nSounds awesome, right? $2.2 trillion of potential revenues for Zillow. Except if home sellers expect to keep some of the proceeds of their home sales. In fact, the average real estate commission is 4.5%, giving Zillow an actual TAM of $100 billion. $100 billion < $2.2 trillion. By alot.\nRocket Mortgage. From itsQ1 earnings conference call:\n\n “ \n As we continue to expand our platform, creating certainty for clients in categories that have historically been challenging, the opportunity for Rocket Companies is gigantic. Consider this; when combined real estate, automotive sales and financial services, all markets where we're helping to lead the way, account for nearly one third of the US GDP.” (My highlighting)\n\nWow! Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) will soon be a blip in Rocket’s rear-view mirror if I believe any of this. By the way, check out Rocket’s insider sales while management is dishing out this hype.\nEmotions versus reason\nI see a lot of anger, frustration, and revenge in the AMC comments. Life stinks a lot, so I get the rationale for these emotions. But I have learned that emotions are the enemy of successful investing.Anyemotions, ranging from fear to enthusiasm. Rational thinking about a company’s value, or even (not my style) investors’ moods, has proven to work better.\nAll of us primates, human and ape, are heavily driven by emotions (even me!), so we are never going to squeeze all of them out of our investment decisions. But the more squeezing, the better.\nAll of the above says “Sell AMC”\n\nAMC’s earnings prospects can’t come close to supporting the current stock price. I tookone stab at itwith AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc.(NYSE:AMC)a few weeks ago. I’m back for more, after reading two interesting pieces. As Isaac Newton said in 1676, “<i>If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.</i>” Now I’m no Isaac Newton. For one, I’m far better looking. But like Zeke – a nickname Isaac’s friends probably never used – I too stand on the shoulders of giants. In this case the shoulders of Jason Zweig, a wonderful financial markets writer for<i>The Wall Street Journal</i>, and John Brooks, author of “<i>Business Adventures</i>”, a book recommended by Bill Gates. I will quote liberally from both in this article, then draw the line for you to AMC.</p>\n<p><b>Investor vs. trader vs. speculator</b></p>\n<p>Jason Zweig graphically distinguished between these three types of stock buyers in hisJune 11, 2021<i>Wall Street Journal</i>column:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “\n <i>Whenever you buy any financial asset because you have a hunch or just for kicks, or because somebody famous is hyping the heck out of it, or everybody else seems to be buying it too, you aren’t investing.You’re definitely a trader: someone who has just bought an asset. And you may be a speculator: someone who thinks other people will pay more for it than you did.”“An investor relies on internal sources of return: earnings, income, growth in the value of assets. A speculator counts on external sources of return: primarily whether somebody else will pay more, regardless of fundamental value.”</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>So why has AMC’s stock price been on a tear? I have one informal data source, namely the 300+ comments on my June 4 AMC article. Earnings, income, growth in the value of assets<i>never</i>came up. What did come up was “short squeeze” and stock charts. So I expect Mr. Zweig would describe AMC’s stock as driven by traders and speculators.</p>\n<p>Mr. Zweig also made me realize that my AMC article left out an earnings forecast. I gave lots of data on historic trends, which only implied a future direction. I correct that omission here.</p>\n<p><b>A 2022 AMC earnings forecast</b></p>\n<p>I start with the key assumptions:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3f5311cb0ff00c046d122c2c84fc3aea\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"168\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><i>My time frame for reference</i>&nbsp;is 2017 to 2019. Earlier data is less relevant because AMC made a big acquisition in 2016, and 2020 and 2021 data is even less relevant because of COVID.</p>\n<p><i>The national box office</i>is the major assumption.My June 4 articleshows that movie attendance has been declining since 2002. What will box office be next year? The steady growth in streaming, both in subscribers and content, certainly is a headwind. And COVID logically should increase the shift from offsite (theater) entertainment to home entertainment, as it has for shopping and working. Holding movie attendance near its ’19 level would be a minor miracle. A 10%, or even a 20%, decline is far more likely. As you can see in the table above, I make 2022 AMC EPS forecasts using all three box office assumptions.</p>\n<p><b><i>AMC market share.</i></b>I assume a share increase from AMC’s ’17-’19 level because some competing theaters must have dropped out because of COVID financial pressures.</p>\n<p><b><i>Admissions gross margin.</i></b>This is the profit from ticket sales less the cost of licensing movies from their producers. I hold AMC steady with ’17-’19, but I can also imagine that movie producers seek better terms because AMC has to bid against a growing pool of streaming services desperate for content.</p>\n<p><b><i>Food expenses as a percent of sales.</i></b>I carry forward the shockingly low number. AMC, and presumably its peers, take their food and beverage costs and<i>multiply them by 7 in their pricing to us moviegoers.</i>Smuggle in your own Jujifruits and save a bundle. My best financial advice for the year.</p>\n<p><b><i>Food and beverage sales as a percent of ticket prices.</i></b>I assume that AMC’s trend of modest increases continues.</p>\n<p><b><i>Operating expenses</i></b>are the cost of the theater personnel, utilities, etc. I assume the gradual uptrend in the operating expense ratio continues, for two reasons. One, these operating expenses are largely fixed, and revenues will be under pressure. Second, it seems logical that the current labor shortage will pressure pay levels for low-end theater jobs.</p>\n<p>We’re now ready for my earnings and cash flow models:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b8a5ce8ad10adb3336126cdb0a5e598\" tg-width=\"537\" tg-height=\"497\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>The ’22 forecasts are set by the assumptions above through the “gross profit” line. My overhead expense forecast assumes that AMC is working hard to limit expenses through its challenging times:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><i>Depreciation/amortization</i>is a combination of accounting expenses for real estate and acquisitions. Write-downs taken during the pandemic should have reduced these expenses.</li>\n <li><i>Interest expense</i>should decline as AMC pays down some debt with the equity it has been raising.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>The gravitational pull of earnings</b></p>\n<p>We arrive at the bottom line. The best-case scenario I can see for 2022 EPS is roughly breakeven. More likely is a modest loss. Cash flow should be somewhat worse, because the cash capital spending needed by AMC to keep its theaters attractive to a shrinking audience should exceed its non-cash depreciation/amortization expenses. If capital spending is much lower than I forecast, it is probably because AMC management is conceding that it is in a death spiral and wants to milk what cash it can.</p>\n<p><i>The bottom line - no support for investors.</i>AMC’s book value is negative. It appears incapable of earning any material money post-COVID. Its business is in long-term decline due to technology changes, and its new competitors are monster companies – Netflix, Disney, Comcast, etc. – with huge resources. An investor can only look at AMC’s current $55 stock price and with a shudder say, in the immortal words of<i>Trading Places</i>, “Sell Mortimer, sell!”</p>\n<p><b>The speculative play - a short squeeze: A historical cautionary tale</b></p>\n<p>Millennials did not invent the short squeeze. It has been around almost as long financial markets have existed. The book<i>Business Adventures</i>by John Brooks<i>,</i>published way back in 1969, tells a vivid tale of a short squeeze even farther back, in the early 1920s. Literally a century ago. I’m going to quote from the book to suggest how the story ends for speculations with no investor support. So pour yourself some illegal hooch (we’re heading to the Prohibition Era) and read on. This is the story of Clarence Saunders, the founder of Piggly Wiggly Stores, the first supermarket; the Amazon of his day.</p>\n<p>Shorts went after Clarence’s stock in 1922, driving it from $50 to below $40. Saunders vowed revenge with a short squeeze. Here are excerpts of Mr. Brooks’ recounting of the story:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “\n <i>Saunders…bought 33,000 shares of Piggly Wiggly, mostly from short sellers; within a week he had brought the total to 105,000 – more than half of the 200,000 shares outstanding. The effectiveness of Saunders’ buying campaign was readily apparent; by late January of 1923 it had driven he price up over $60…</i>”\n</blockquote>\n<p>The sole short squeezer of yore has been replaced by herds of “apes” today, and the apes have been far better in driving up prices. By the way, believe it or not, a group of apes is apparently called a “shrewdness”. A group of apes is shrewd – interesting.</p>\n<blockquote>\n “\n <i>He had made himself a bundle and had demonstrated how a poor Southern boy could teach the city slickers a lesson.”</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>Today we have apes sticking it to hedge funds.</p>\n<blockquote>\n “\n <i>One of the great hazards in the Corner was always that even though a player might defeat his opponents, he would discover that he had won a Pyrrhic victory. Once the short sellers had been squeezed dry, the cornerer might find that the reams of stock he had accumulated in the process were a dead weight around his neck; by pushing it all back into the market, he would drive its price down to zero.</i>”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Something to think about. What was Saunders to do?</p>\n<blockquote>\n “[\n <i>Saunders’] solution was to sell his $55 shares on the installment plan. In his February advertisements, he stipulated that the public could buy shares only by paying $25 down and the balance in three $10 installments</i>.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Pretty clever, no? No:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “\n <i>At the end of the third day, the total number of shares subscribed for was still under 25,000, and the sales that were made were canceled. Saunders had to admit that the drive had been a failure.”</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>Uh oh. What now?</p>\n<blockquote>\n <i>“On August 22nd, the New York auction firm of Adrian H. Muller &amp; Son…knocked down 1,500 shares of Piggly Wiggly at $1 a share…The following spring Saunders went through formal bankruptcy proceedings.”</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>Ouch.</p>\n<p><b>Buyers beware</b></p>\n<p>As Jason Zweig noted above, speculators depend upon finding a buyer at a higher price. Today’s holders of AMC stock certainly have made life painful for many short sellers. But are there really enough new buyers to take out current shareholders above AMC’s present $28 billion market cap? Especially with the gravity of no earnings constantly weighing on the stock?</p>\n<p>AMC shareholders, don’t win Clarence Saunders’ Pyrrhic victory. Take your $55 a share and run. Fast. So I expect Mr. Zweig would describe AMC’s stock as driven by traders and speculators.\nMr. Zweig also made me realize that my AMC article left out an earnings forecast. I gave lots of data on historic trends, which only implied a future direction. I correct that omission here.\nA 2022 AMC earnings forecast\nI start with the key assumptions:\n\nMy time frame for reference is 2017 to 2019. Earlier data is less relevant because AMC made a big acquisition in 2016, and 2020 and 2021 data is even less relevant because of COVID.\nThe national box officeis the major assumption.My June 4 articleshows that movie attendance has been declining since 2002. What will box office be next year? The steady growth in streaming, both in subscribers and content, certainly is a headwind. And COVID logically should increase the shift from offsite (theater) entertainment to home entertainment, as it has for shopping and working. Holding movie attendance near its ’19 level would be a minor miracle. A 10%, or even a 20%, decline is far more likely. As you can see in the table above, I make 2022 AMC EPS forecasts using all three box office assumptions.\nAMC market share.I assume a share increase from AMC’s ’17-’19 level because some competing theaters must have dropped out because of COVID financial pressures.\nAdmissions gross margin.This is the profit from ticket sales less the cost of licensing movies from their producers. I hold AMC steady with ’17-’19, but I can also imagine that movie producers seek better terms because AMC has to bid against a growing pool of streaming services desperate for content.\nFood expenses as a percent of sales.I carry forward the shockingly low number. AMC, and presumably its peers, take their food and beverage costs andmultiply them by 7 in their pricing to us moviegoers.Smuggle in your own Jujifruits and save a bundle. My best financial advice for the year.\nFood and beverage sales as a percent of ticket prices.I assume that AMC’s trend of modest increases continues.\nOperating expensesare the cost of the theater personnel, utilities, etc. I assume the gradual uptrend in the operating expense ratio continues, for two reasons. One, these operating expenses are largely fixed, and revenues will be under pressure. Second, it seems logical that the current labor shortage will pressure pay levels for low-end theater jobs.\nWe’re now ready for my earnings and cash flow models:\n\nThe ’22 forecasts are set by the assumptions above through the “gross profit” line. My overhead expense forecast assumes that AMC is working hard to limit expenses through its challenging times:\n\nDepreciation/amortizationis a combination of accounting expenses for real estate and acquisitions. Write-downs taken during the pandemic should have reduced these expenses.\nInterest expenseshould decline as AMC pays down some debt with the equity it has been raising.\n\nThe gravitational pull of earnings\nWe arrive at the bottom line. The best-case scenario I can see for 2022 EPS is roughly breakeven. More likely is a modest loss. Cash flow should be somewhat worse, because the cash capital spending needed by AMC to keep its theaters attractive to a shrinking audience should exceed its non-cash depreciation/amortization expenses. If capital spending is much lower than I forecast, it is probably because AMC management is conceding that it is in a death spiral and wants to milk what cash it can.\nThe bottom line - no support for investors.AMC’s book value is negative. It appears incapable of earning any material money post-COVID. Its business is in long-term decline due to technology changes, and its new competitors are monster companies – Netflix, Disney, Comcast, etc. – with huge resources. An investor can only look at AMC’s current $55 stock price and with a shudder say, in the immortal words ofTrading Places, “Sell Mortimer, sell!”\nThe speculative play - a short squeeze: A historical cautionary tale\nMillennials did not invent the short squeeze. It has been around almost as long financial markets have existed. The bookBusiness Adventuresby John Brooks,published way back in 1969, tells a vivid tale of a short squeeze even farther back, in the early 1920s. Literally a century ago. I’m going to quote from the book to suggest how the story ends for speculations with no investor support. So pour yourself some illegal hooch (we’re heading to the Prohibition Era) and read on. This is the story of Clarence Saunders, the founder of Piggly Wiggly Stores, the first supermarket; the Amazon of his day.\nShorts went after Clarence’s stock in 1922, driving it from $50 to below $40. Saunders vowed revenge with a short squeeze. Here are excerpts of Mr. Brooks’ recounting of the story:\n\n “\n Saunders…bought 33,000 shares of Piggly Wiggly, mostly from short sellers; within a week he had brought the total to 105,000 – more than half of the 200,000 shares outstanding. The effectiveness of Saunders’ buying campaign was readily apparent; by late January of 1923 it had driven he price up over $60…”\n\nThe sole short squeezer of yore has been replaced by herds of “apes” today, and the apes have been far better in driving up prices. By the way, believe it or not, a group of apes is apparently called a “shrewdness”. A group of apes is shrewd – interesting.\n\n “\n He had made himself a bundle and had demonstrated how a poor Southern boy could teach the city slickers a lesson.”\n\nToday we have apes sticking it to hedge funds.\n\n “\n One of the great hazards in the Corner was always that even though a player might defeat his opponents, he would discover that he had won a Pyrrhic victory. Once the short sellers had been squeezed dry, the cornerer might find that the reams of stock he had accumulated in the process were a dead weight around his neck; by pushing it all back into the market, he would drive its price down to zero.”\n\nSomething to think about. What was Saunders to do?\n\n “[\n Saunders’] solution was to sell his $55 shares on the installment plan. In his February advertisements, he stipulated that the public could buy shares only by paying $25 down and the balance in three $10 installments.”\n\nPretty clever, no? No:\n\n “\n At the end of the third day, the total number of shares subscribed for was still under 25,000, and the sales that were made were canceled. Saunders had to admit that the drive had been a failure.”\n\nUh oh. What now?\n\n“On August 22nd, the New York auction firm of Adrian H. Muller & Son…knocked down 1,500 shares of Piggly Wiggly at $1 a share…The following spring Saunders went through formal bankruptcy proceedings.”\n\nOuch.\nBuyers beware\nAs Jason Zweig noted above, speculators depend upon finding a buyer at a higher price. Today’s holders of AMC stock certainly have made life painful for many short sellers. But are there really enough new buyers to take out current shareholders above AMC’s present $28 billion market cap? Especially with the gravity of no earnings constantly weighing on the stock?\nAMC shareholders, don’t win Clarence Saunders’ Pyrrhic victory. Take your $55 a share and run. Fast. Its platform helps clients secure and accelerate the performance of websites and applications. You also can't blame the widespread availability of online streaming options. <i>Candyman</i> (as well as the weekend's second-highest grossing film, <i>Free Guy</i>) are exclusive theatrical releases.</p>\n<p>An easier culprit to blame right now could be the delta variant of COVID-19. The summertime surge of the deadly virus is likely keeping people away from indoor social settings, but even that's not a viable lone scapegoat. Box office receipts are 43% below the same period -- the weekend before the Labor Day holiday weekend -- in 2019. It's a safe bet that your local bars, indoor malls, and even restaurants aren't seeing a 43% plunge in sales over the past two years.</p>\n<p>This summer was supposed to be the great rebirth of going out to the movies. I strongly believe that investors who stubbornly hold on to that old perception will miss out on investing in some of the greatest brands the world will ever see.</p>\n<p>Buying an NIO car means much more than just getting a vehicle; it means getting into an exclusive club of services and convenience. Benefits include access to hundreds of swapping stations, lifetime free roadside rescue (including charge vans), lifetime free cellular connectivity, lifetime free warranty, and excellent customer service. This is why Ferrari's (RACE) operating margin is well over 20%, while Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) are in the single digits.</p>\n<p><b>Financials &amp; Valuation</b></p>\n<p>NIO is in hyper-growth mode. In 2020, the company generated $2.5 billion in revenue, up 126% y/y. In 2021, the company is expected to grow 117% y/y to $5.4 billion.</p>\n<p>The company is not yet profitable but is expected to be by 2022. Gross margin only turned positive in 2020 and is expected to be 19.3% in 2021. EBITDA is expected to be negative $258 million in 2021 and a positive $206 million in 2022. Free cash flow is expected to be negative $42 million in 2021 before turning to a positive $354 million in 2022.</p>\n<p>However, despite the cash burn expected in 2021, investors should feel at ease since the company exited&nbsp;2020&nbsp;with $5.9 billion of cash and cash equivalents. Including $600 million in short-term investments and subtracting ~$2.1 billion in debt and operating leases and the expected negative free cash flow in 2021, NIO should exit 2021 with over $4 billion in net cash and investments. That is plenty of buffers since NIO is expected to generate positive free cash flow in 2022.</p>\n<p>Since NIO is not yet profitable, we will look at the forward EV/Sales multiple as is typical for hyper-growth companies not yet generating a profit. After all, I said to short it at $26/share (Short Squeeze Presents Many Ways to Make Money) and then explained why there was no fundamental news behind the run up at $58/share (Recent Events are Just Re-Runs). But I'm pretty good at reading press releases, news articles and financial statements, and it's clear from recent news just how big a hole AMC has to climb out of on an operating basis.</p>\n<p><b>Attendance at theaters is terrible and AMC will continue to lose money</b></p>\n<p>On Monday, AMC put out a&nbsp;press release&nbsp;touting its \"post-reopening record\" of 2 million attendees and highlighting the biggest box office draw \"Fast and the Furious 9\" which grossed $70 million:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c6c54d7e40d29666bf8b78f554f233e9\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"83\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b9f8c597b1ba417c6b478358caa9cc7\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"62\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: Businesswire</span></p>\n<p>For reasons that should be clear to all,these numbers are terrible. As you can see from the company's earnings release showing results for 2018 and 2019:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b604e216de76939782f86a868e40889d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"412\"><span>Source: AMC Entertainment</span></p>\n<p>The pace for attendance in 2019 was 250 million in the US, or 4.8 million customers per week and in 2018 it was 4.9 million customers. So it's very nice to learn that 2 million customers is the largest number of people to see a movie at AMC since COVID-19 led to lockdowns, but the real numbers mean show attendance is down almost 60% from 2018 and 2019.</p>\n<p>As you can see above, 2018 and 2019 were not great years for the company, either. AMC lost $149 million in the second of two years and made $110 million in the first one. At the end of 2019, the stock price of a money-losing AMC was just over $7/share. Bullish shareholders (\"Apes\" as they style themselves) are excited about the move of more than 700% to this week's price of over $55/share:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1ce4607284db107f9758f4735a99ccd3\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"331\"><span>Source: Koyfin</span></p>\n<p>But what many of them don't seem to be paying attention to is the market capitalization. As you can see in the chart above, increasing the share count from 100 million to almost 480 million shares outstanding in the last year has pushed the market cap far higher leading to an increase of almost 3,900%.</p>\n<p>This kind of securities analysis is not \"optional\" and shareholders are now paying almost 40 times as much to own this company as they did at the end of the last full year before COVID-19.</p>\n<p><b>Not all MemeStocks are created Equal</b></p>\n<p>The first \"memestock\" to capture everyone's attention this year was GameStop (GME). After a number of years of declining sales, a new class of investors such as&nbsp;Chewy founder Ryan&nbsp;took interest in the company and eventually took over the board of directors. At the same time this change in leadership was underway, a number of hedge funds who had been short the stock&nbsp;began losing money&nbsp;at an alarming clip.</p>\n<p>In the popular imagination, the rise in GameStop shares was a&nbsp;win for retail investors&nbsp;sharing information on Reddit such as the now-famous \"Roaring Kitty,\" but the evidence is the biggest winners were in fact other hedge funds (see \"This Hedge Fund Made $700 million on GameStop\"). Since Cohen took over the company, he is shifting its business model to online sales and hiring executives from leading companies such as&nbsp;Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN).</p>\n<p>None of the kinds of positive things that are happening at GameStop are even close to being talked about at AMC. AMC has had thesame CEO since 2015. There is no change in business model, and now that he has cash from equity sales, thebest ideahe's come up with is just buying more movie theaters! Meanwhile, many of the most successful companies on the planet such as Disney(NYSE:DIS), Netflix(NASDAQ:NFLX)and Amazon are all developing streaming services to entertain customers at home - which keeps them from going to the movies.</p>\n<p>Likewise, the entire growth of the online gaming industry with services such as Twitch from Amazon and Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT)with Xbox is another substantial competitor getting in the way of customers going to the movies. All this is to say that the future is not getting brighter for AMC.</p>\n<p><b>Conclusion</b></p>\n<p>Maybe AMC's share price will double next week. Maybe it will get cut in half. I don't know and neither does anyone else. But one month, one quarter or one year from now, shareholders will own a money-losing company in a fading industry at an extremely high valuation.</p>\n<p>I'm short shares in this stock because one day in the not-too-distant future, those shareholders will start selling, and then once the stock goes down regularly I expect them to start selling shares rapidly. Ultimately, I expect the shares to go back to the level they were at the end of 2019 - only when that happens, they won't be $7/share anymore. However, there is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> exception: Change is constant.</p>\n<p>Looking back, it's not uncommon to see the market's 10 largest companies by market cap completely reshuffle every five or 10 years. Innovation, competitive advantages, and acquisitions, among other factors, regularly crown new superstars and pull the rug out from beneath widely held companies.</p>\n<p>It's my belief that e-commerce giant <b>Amazon</b> (NASDAQ:AMZN) is on track to soon surpass both <b>Microsoft</b>&nbsp;and <b>Apple</b>&nbsp;to become the largest publicly traded company. And that's not all. Between now and 2025, I predict Amazon will hit $10,000 a share. This would give the company a $5 trillion market cap.</p>\n<p>Sound outrageous or too good to be true? I'm about to show you why $10,000 by 2025 is saner than you think.</p>\n<h2>Amazon's online market share is unrivaled</h2>\n<p>Let's start by examining Amazon's two (yes, <i>two</i>) dominant operating models.</p>\n<p>Most people are probably very familiar with Amazon's online marketplace. According to data found on statistics-aggregator Statista, nearly 215 million people visited Amazon's online sites in December 2019. We can probably safely assume this figure moved substantially higher throughout 2020, with consumers stuck in their homes due to the coronavirus pandemic.</p>\n<p>Yet this isn't the jaw-dropping figure. What's even more impressive is that Amazon controls an estimated 40.4% of all online sales in the U.S., according to an April 2021 report from eMarketer. Think about this for a moment: $0.40 of every $1 spent online in the U.S. is being routed through Amazon, and the company's market share keeps inching higher.</p>\n<p>While it's great to be the go-to source for e-commerce, Amazon is also acutely aware of how razor thin retail margins can be. It's helped offset this by pushing its Prime membership.</p>\n<p>With Prime, members enjoy free two-day shipping, the unlimited streaming of movies and videos on Prime Video, and multiple deals and discounts when shopping. For Amazon, Prime helps the company generate tens of billions of dollars in additional revenue. With more than 200 million Prime members worldwide, Amazon is able to use the revenue from Prime to undercut brick-and-mortar retailers on price. It also doesn't hurt that Prime members have added incentive to spend more and to stay within Amazon's ecosystem of products and services.</p>\n<h2>AWS is becoming a more important puzzle piece</h2>\n<p>But Amazon is about far more than just its dominant online marketplace. The company's cloud infrastructure segment, Amazon Web Services (AWS), is also an absolute beast.</p>\n<p>According to global technology-analysis company Canalys, worldwide cloud revenue spending in the first quarter of 2021 totaled $41.8 billion. Of that nearly $42 billion, Google Cloud (a division of <b>Alphabet</b>) accounted for 7%, Microsoft Azure was responsible for 19%, and AWS stood tall with a 32% market share!</p>\n<p>With the pandemic wreaking havoc on traditional workplaces, businesses of all sizes have been pushing online and into the cloud to reach customers. That's meant sustainably high demand for AWS, which provides everything from database storage and content delivery to advanced analytics and management tools.</p>\n<p>How impressive has AWS been for Amazon? During the worst economic downturn in decades in 2020, AWS <i>still</i> grew sales by 30%. Revenue jumped another 32% in the first quarter of 2021, which pushed its annual sales run rate to about $54 billion.</p>\n<p>What's important to realize about AWS is that the margins associated with cloud infrastructure services are light years higher than Amazon's online marketplace. Even though AWS accounted for \"just\" $13.5 billion of the company's $108.5 billion in net sales in Q1 2021, it produced close to $4.2 billion in operating income. Amazon's other businesses, which yielded $95 billion in revenue, produced only $4.7 billion in operating income. In short, as AWS grows into a large percentage of total sales, operating income and cash flow will grow at a much faster rate than the company's total sales.</p>\n<h2>Amazon at $10,000 by 2025 is a very real possibility</h2>\n<p>Here's where things get interesting. It's no secret that Amazon's valuation doesn't make much sense using traditional fundamental analysis. This is to say that its price-to-earnings ratio and book value have always been in nosebleed territory. However, neither measure serves much purpose when we're talking about a nontraditional, fast-growing business. Since Amazon chooses to reinvest a majority of its capital, operating cash flow and historic operating cash flow multiples are considerably better measures of value for the company.</p>\n<p>Dating back to 2010, Amazon has ended each of the past 11 years at a multiple relative to its operating cash flow of between 23 and 37. Again, from a fundamental perspective, this might seem high. But given Amazon's utter dominance in e-commerce and cloud infrastructure services, it's a multiple that Wall Street and investors have been perfectly willing to support for more than a decade.</p>\n<p>As we look to 2021 and beyond, Wall Street is crystal clear that it expects AWS to help more than double Amazon's cash flow per share. Keeping in mind that estimates are fluid, here's what analysts are looking for, in terms of cash flow per share, through 2025, courtesy of <b>FactSet</b>:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>2021:</b> $153.73 consensus cash flow per share (CFPS)</li>\n <li><b>2022:</b> $192.99 consensus CFPS</li>\n <li><b>2023:</b> $234.91 consensus CFPS</li>\n <li><b>2024:</b> $294.30 consensus CFPS</li>\n <li><b>2025:</b> $341.70 consensus CFPS</li>\n</ul>\n<p>If Amazon were to simply remain valued at the median of its operating cash flow multiple (30) over the past 11 years (the midpoint between 23 and 37), the $341.70 in CFPS that it's estimated by Wall Street to bring in by 2025 would lead to a share price of (drum roll) $10,251.</p>\n<p>Amazon at $10,000 might seem like a pie-in-the-sky number, but it would be right in line with how investors have always valued the company. Innovation, competitive advantages, and acquisitions, among other factors, regularly crown new superstars and pull the rug out from beneath widely held companies.\nIt's my belief that e-commerce giant Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is on track to soon surpass both Microsoft and Apple to become the largest publicly traded company. And that's not all. Between now and 2025, I predict Amazon will hit $10,000 a share. This would give the company a $5 trillion market cap.\nSound outrageous or too good to be true? I'm about to show you why $10,000 by 2025 is saner than you think.\nAmazon's online market share is unrivaled\nLet's start by examining Amazon's two (yes, two) dominant operating models.\nMost people are probably very familiar with Amazon's online marketplace. According to data found on statistics-aggregator Statista, nearly 215 million people visited Amazon's online sites in December 2019. We can probably safely assume this figure moved substantially higher throughout 2020, with consumers stuck in their homes due to the coronavirus pandemic.\nYet this isn't the jaw-dropping figure. What's even more impressive is that Amazon controls an estimated 40.4% of all online sales in the U.S., according to an April 2021 report from eMarketer. Think about this for a moment: $0.40 of every $1 spent online in the U.S. is being routed through Amazon, and the company's market share keeps inching higher.\nWhile it's great to be the go-to source for e-commerce, Amazon is also acutely aware of how razor thin retail margins can be. It's helped offset this by pushing its Prime membership.\nWith Prime, members enjoy free two-day shipping, the unlimited streaming of movies and videos on Prime Video, and multiple deals and discounts when shopping. For Amazon, Prime helps the company generate tens of billions of dollars in additional revenue. With more than 200 million Prime members worldwide, Amazon is able to use the revenue from Prime to undercut brick-and-mortar retailers on price. It also doesn't hurt that Prime members have added incentive to spend more and to stay within Amazon's ecosystem of products and services.\nAWS is becoming a more important puzzle piece\nBut Amazon is about far more than just its dominant online marketplace. The company's cloud infrastructure segment, Amazon Web Services (AWS), is also an absolute beast.\nAccording to global technology-analysis company Canalys, worldwide cloud revenue spending in the first quarter of 2021 totaled $41.8 billion. Of that nearly $42 billion, Google Cloud (a division of Alphabet) accounted for 7%, Microsoft Azure was responsible for 19%, and AWS stood tall with a 32% market share!\nWith the pandemic wreaking havoc on traditional workplaces, businesses of all sizes have been pushing online and into the cloud to reach customers. That's meant sustainably high demand for AWS, which provides everything from database storage and content delivery to advanced analytics and management tools.\nHow impressive has AWS been for Amazon? During the worst economic downturn in decades in 2020, AWS still grew sales by 30%. Revenue jumped another 32% in the first quarter of 2021, which pushed its annual sales run rate to about $54 billion.\nWhat's important to realize about AWS is that the margins associated with cloud infrastructure services are light years higher than Amazon's online marketplace. Even though AWS accounted for \"just\" $13.5 billion of the company's $108.5 billion in net sales in Q1 2021, it produced close to $4.2 billion in operating income. Amazon's other businesses, which yielded $95 billion in revenue, produced only $4.7 billion in operating income. In short, as AWS grows into a large percentage of total sales, operating income and cash flow will grow at a much faster rate than the company's total sales.\nAmazon at $10,000 by 2025 is a very real possibility\nHere's where things get interesting. It's no secret that Amazon's valuation doesn't make much sense using traditional fundamental analysis. This is to say that its price-to-earnings ratio and book value have always been in nosebleed territory. However, neither measure serves much purpose when we're talking about a nontraditional, fast-growing business. Since Amazon chooses to reinvest a majority of its capital, operating cash flow and historic operating cash flow multiples are considerably better measures of value for the company.\nDating back to 2010, Amazon has ended each of the past 11 years at a multiple relative to its operating cash flow of between 23 and 37. Again, from a fundamental perspective, this might seem high. But given Amazon's utter dominance in e-commerce and cloud infrastructure services, it's a multiple that Wall Street and investors have been perfectly willing to support for more than a decade.\nAs we look to 2021 and beyond, Wall Street is crystal clear that it expects AWS to help more than double Amazon's cash flow per share. Keeping in mind that estimates are fluid, here's what analysts are looking for, in terms of cash flow per share, through 2025, courtesy of FactSet:\n\n2021: $153.73 consensus cash flow per share (CFPS)\n2022: $192.99 consensus CFPS\n2023: $234.91 consensus CFPS\n2024: $294.30 consensus CFPS\n2025: $341.70 consensus CFPS\n\nIf Amazon were to simply remain valued at the median of its operating cash flow multiple (30) over the past 11 years (the midpoint between 23 and 37), the $341.70 in CFPS that it's estimated by Wall Street to bring in by 2025 would lead to a share price of (drum roll) $10,251.\nAmazon at $10,000 might seem like a pie-in-the-sky number, but it would be right in line with how investors have always valued the company. The hedge fund looks to have turned the tables on the Reddit army.</p>\n<p><b>Reason for AMC's price reaction</b></p>\n<p>Movie theater company AMC just did what a lot of companies do that have a lot of debt to service and need to confront an uncertain future… they offer new shares to investors and use the funds as a life line to survive.</p>\n<p>AMC issued&nbsp;8,500,000 shares&nbsp;for $230,500,000 to an investment firm named Mudrick Capital Management, LP. The investment firm has a focus on event-driven investing and distressed debt.</p>\n<p>AMC said that it will use the proceeds from the capital raise for the \"pursuit of value creating acquisitions of theater assets and leases, as well as investments to enhance the consumer appeal of its theaters\".</p>\n<p>Fresh capital is much needed. AMC's revenues cratered during the pandemic and the theater chain is still suffering from COVID-19 shutdown restrictions and social distancing regulations.</p>\n<p>Although AMC's revenues are expected to bounce back this year as the pandemic seemingly comes to an end, COVID-19 may have changed movie viewing habits permanently.</p>\n<p>One big challenge for AMC will be to get viewers back into its movie theaters. Streaming already was a competitive threat to the industry before COVID-19 and the pandemic may have accelerated this trend. So Mudrick Capital Management is not a long term investor that is bringing its distressed debt and special situation expertise to AMC… the whole thing was really just a quick flip as the investment firm offloaded overpriced shares to retail investors that continue to buy into the frenzy because they hope for a short squeeze. The firm itself brazenly called AMC \"massively overvalued.\" If the firm made a 20% return on its invested capital, it secured $46m in profits yesterday… not bad for a day's work!</p>\n<p>While AMC was likely happy to get an equity raise done at this valuation, the hedge fund sold its stake faster than AMC could get the filing about its unregistered sale of equity securities out...</p>\n<p><b>Extreme volatility and risks...</b></p>\n<p>AMC's valuation has become even more ludicrous on Tuesday than it already was before. The movie theater chain, which was close to bankruptcy just a few months ago, now trades at a P-S ratio of 3.</p>\n<p>Cinemark Holdings (CNK), a theater rival which may itself be overvalued, trades at a P-S ratio of 1.0.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/81c3d9572182dca54c798bab323e99b2\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"419\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>The risk here is immeasurable because neither the price action nor the valuation makes any sense for AMC.</p>\n<p>AMC's price should have gone down yesterday, not up because a capital raise is dilutive... but nothing makes sense anymore when it comes to AMC.</p>\n<p>AMC is trading independently of its business numbers and growth prospects and the risk of losing everything in this \"investment\" is extremely high.</p>\n<p><b>Closing thoughts</b></p>\n<p>A hedge fund just had a big victory and nobody seems to notice or care.</p>\n<p>You literally had a hedge fund flipping its stake in AMC to the Reddit army at a massively overpriced valuation and explicitly calling AMC \"overvalued.\" It can't get any more brazen than this.
