However, seeing where analysts believe there are difficulties ahead for certain stocks could be a great place to start your research -- whether you agree with them or vehemently disagree. Below, we'll look at three stocks that the most pessimistic analysts on Wall Street see plunging 50% or more in the near future, with the goal of providing some insight that could help you make your own decision.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1d1f7dc1f700e609bc5edb8afc726c47\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"540\"><span>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</span></p>\n<p><b>1. Transocean</b></p>\n<p>Shares of drilling specialist&nbsp;<b>Transocean</b>(NYSE:RIG)&nbsp;have seen a lot of ups and downs in recent years, and unfortunately, long-term investors have suffered through a lot more down times. With oil prices having fallen from triple-digit levels, Transocean's stock has lost more than 90% of its value since the early to mid-2010s. Yet more recently, the stock has perked up along with rising crude prices, jumping nearly sevenfold from its worst levels just last October.</p>\n<p>Most analysts seem to think the driller's shares have come too far too quickly. Currently trading at nearly $4.50 per share, the average price target is 44% lower at $2.50. The lowest target is at just $0.50 per share -- nearly 90% lower than current share prices.</p>\n<p>Comments from&nbsp;<b>Barclays</b>&nbsp;are fairly representative of what Wall Street is saying about Transocean. In March, Barclays cut its rating from equal weight to underweight, and its $2 price target for the stock represented a more than 50% haircut from where the stock was trading at the time. Barclays argued the share price seemed overly optimistic about a&nbsp;recovery in offshore drilling activity.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, crude prices have continued to rise since then, and the stock has climbed despite short interest of about 14% of Transocean's current float. Further strength in oil markets should help Transocean's business, but it's unclear whether the stock has already taken a recovery into account.</p>\n<p><b>2. American Airlines Group</b></p>\n<p>A different recovery play is somewhat more controversial.<b>American Airlines Group</b>(NASDAQ:AAL)&nbsp;saw its stock plunge at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, as air travel ground to a halt. Massive losses have plagued the airline since, and those losses could continue well into the future. Yet hopes for a long-term recovery have helped American's stock regain much of the ground it lost.</p>\n<p>Analysts are also divided on American's prospects.<b>Jefferies</b>&nbsp;upgraded the stock from underperform to hold and set a $25 per share price target, pointing to recovery prospects that should outweigh the danger from high debt levels. Analysts at Susquehanna, however, haven't budged from their negative rating on American, and its $10 per share price target reflected the belief that&nbsp;domestic-only airlines&nbsp;would likely outperform in the early stage of the recovery as international pandemic-related restrictions have remained in place.</p>\n<p>With short interest of more than 14% of the stock's float, American has a large contingent of investors betting against it. Yet theairlines&nbsp; have been popular picks among retail investors, and that sets up the tug of war that we've seen with many companies in recent months.</p>\n<p><b>3. AMC Entertainment Holdings</b></p>\n<p>Finally,<b>AMC Entertainment Holdings</b>(NYSE:AMC)is a big battleground in the investing community. The movie theater operator's stock has soared 2,500% since the beginning of the year. Yet analysts are universally convinced that the share price will fall back to earth, with price targets ranging from $16 on the high side to just $1 on the low side. Those calls imply declines of 70% to 98% from current levels.</p>\n<p>Here, though, the investment community itself has defied those analyst calls. In early June, AMC raised $587 million by selling 11.55 million shares at a price above $50 per share. That was a huge improvement over an earlier capital raise in late April and early May of 43 million shares at an average stock price just under $10.</p>\n<p>Despite -- or perhaps because of -- the huge run-up in AMC's stock price, short interest remains high at 17% of float. It's inevitable that AMC's business will improve when people return to theaters again in full force, butwhether the stock can hold onto its gainsis a different story entirely.</p>\n<p><b>Will Wall Street win?</b></p>\n<p>Wall Street has been notoriously wrong with some of its short-selling calls in recent months. In many investors' minds, that makes bearish picks like these potential<i>buy</i>candidates rather than stocks to be shunned.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, all three of these stocks serve as reminders that stock prices rise in advance of improving industry conditions. Yet the WallStreetBets phenomenon has crushed some major institutions that have tried using that strategy, sending some stocks sharply higher despite their challenges.\nWall Street analysts are usually reluctant to recommend against stocks, and they certainly don't have a perfect track record. However, seeing where analysts believe there are difficulties ahead for certain stocks could be a great place to start your research -- whether you agree with them or vehemently disagree. Below, we'll look at three stocks that the most pessimistic analysts on Wall Street see plunging 50% or more in the near future, with the goal of providing some insight that could help you make your own decision.\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\n1. Transocean\nShares of drilling specialist Transocean(NYSE:RIG) have seen a lot of ups and downs in recent years, and unfortunately, long-term investors have suffered through a lot more down times. With oil prices having fallen from triple-digit levels, Transocean's stock has lost more than 90% of its value since the early to mid-2010s. Yet more recently, the stock has perked up along with rising crude prices, jumping nearly sevenfold from its worst levels just last October.\nMost analysts seem to think the driller's shares have come too far too quickly. Currently trading at nearly $4.50 per share, the average price target is 44% lower at $2.50. The lowest target is at just $0.50 per share -- nearly 90% lower than current share prices.\nComments from Barclays are fairly representative of what Wall Street is saying about Transocean. In March, Barclays cut its rating from equal weight to underweight, and its $2 price target for the stock represented a more than 50% haircut from where the stock was trading at the time. Barclays argued the share price seemed overly optimistic about a recovery in offshore drilling activity.\nNevertheless, crude prices have continued to rise since then, and the stock has climbed despite short interest of about 14% of Transocean's current float. Further strength in oil markets should help Transocean's business, but it's unclear whether the stock has already taken a recovery into account.\n2. American Airlines Group\nA different recovery play is somewhat more controversial.American Airlines Group(NASDAQ:AAL) saw its stock plunge at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, as air travel ground to a halt. Massive losses have plagued the airline since, and those losses could continue well into the future. Yet hopes for a long-term recovery have helped American's stock regain much of the ground it lost.\nAnalysts are also divided on American's prospects.Jefferies upgraded the stock from underperform to hold and set a $25 per share price target, pointing to recovery prospects that should outweigh the danger from high debt levels. Analysts at Susquehanna, however, haven't budged from their negative rating on American, and its $10 per share price target reflected the belief that domestic-only airlines would likely outperform in the early stage of the recovery as international pandemic-related restrictions have remained in place.\nWith short interest of more than 14% of the stock's float, American has a large contingent of investors betting against it. Yet theairlines  have been popular picks among retail investors, and that sets up the tug of war that we've seen with many companies in recent months.\n3. AMC Entertainment Holdings\nFinally,AMC Entertainment Holdings(NYSE:AMC)is a big battleground in the investing community. The movie theater operator's stock has soared 2,500% since the beginning of the year. Yet analysts are universally convinced that the share price will fall back to earth, with price targets ranging from $16 on the high side to just $1 on the low side. Those calls imply declines of 70% to 98% from current levels.\nHere, though, the investment community itself has defied those analyst calls. In early June, AMC raised $587 million by selling 11.55 million shares at a price above $50 per share. That was a huge improvement over an earlier capital raise in late April and early May of 43 million shares at an average stock price just under $10.\nDespite -- or perhaps because of -- the huge run-up in AMC's stock price, short interest remains high at 17% of float. It's inevitable that AMC's business will improve when people return to theaters again in full force, butwhether the stock can hold onto its gainsis a different story entirely.\nWill Wall Street win?\nWall Street has been notoriously wrong with some of its short-selling calls in recent months. I tookone stab at itwith AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc.(NYSE:AMC)a few weeks ago. I’m back for more, after reading two interesting pieces. As Isaac Newton said in 1676, “<i>If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.</i>” Now I’m no Isaac Newton. For one, I’m far better looking. But like Zeke – a nickname Isaac’s friends probably never used – I too stand on the shoulders of giants. In this case the shoulders of Jason Zweig, a wonderful financial markets writer for<i>The Wall Street Journal</i>, and John Brooks, author of “<i>Business Adventures</i>”, a book recommended by Bill Gates. I will quote liberally from both in this article, then draw the line for you to AMC.</p>\n<p><b>Investor vs. trader vs. speculator</b></p>\n<p>Jason Zweig graphically distinguished between these three types of stock buyers in hisJune 11, 2021<i>Wall Street Journal</i>column:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “\n <i>Whenever you buy any financial asset because you have a hunch or just for kicks, or because somebody famous is hyping the heck out of it, or everybody else seems to be buying it too, you aren’t investing.You’re definitely a trader: someone who has just bought an asset. And you may be a speculator: someone who thinks other people will pay more for it than you did.”“An investor relies on internal sources of return: earnings, income, growth in the value of assets. A speculator counts on external sources of return: primarily whether somebody else will pay more, regardless of fundamental value.”</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>So why has AMC’s stock price been on a tear? I have one informal data source, namely the 300+ comments on my June 4 AMC article. Earnings, income, growth in the value of assets<i>never</i>came up. What did come up was “short squeeze” and stock charts. So I expect Mr. Zweig would describe AMC’s stock as driven by traders and speculators.</p>\n<p>Mr. Zweig also made me realize that my AMC article left out an earnings forecast. I gave lots of data on historic trends, which only implied a future direction. I correct that omission here.</p>\n<p><b>A 2022 AMC earnings forecast</b></p>\n<p>I start with the key assumptions:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3f5311cb0ff00c046d122c2c84fc3aea\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"168\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><i>My time frame for reference</i>&nbsp;is 2017 to 2019. Earlier data is less relevant because AMC made a big acquisition in 2016, and 2020 and 2021 data is even less relevant because of COVID.</p>\n<p><i>The national box office</i>is the major assumption.My June 4 articleshows that movie attendance has been declining since 2002. What will box office be next year? The steady growth in streaming, both in subscribers and content, certainly is a headwind. And COVID logically should increase the shift from offsite (theater) entertainment to home entertainment, as it has for shopping and working. Holding movie attendance near its ’19 level would be a minor miracle. A 10%, or even a 20%, decline is far more likely. As you can see in the table above, I make 2022 AMC EPS forecasts using all three box office assumptions.</p>\n<p><b><i>AMC market share.</i></b>I assume a share increase from AMC’s ’17-’19 level because some competing theaters must have dropped out because of COVID financial pressures.</p>\n<p><b><i>Admissions gross margin.</i></b>This is the profit from ticket sales less the cost of licensing movies from their producers. I hold AMC steady with ’17-’19, but I can also imagine that movie producers seek better terms because AMC has to bid against a growing pool of streaming services desperate for content.</p>\n<p><b><i>Food expenses as a percent of sales.</i></b>I carry forward the shockingly low number. AMC, and presumably its peers, take their food and beverage costs and<i>multiply them by 7 in their pricing to us moviegoers.</i>Smuggle in your own Jujifruits and save a bundle. My best financial advice for the year.</p>\n<p><b><i>Food and beverage sales as a percent of ticket prices.</i></b>I assume that AMC’s trend of modest increases continues.</p>\n<p><b><i>Operating expenses</i></b>are the cost of the theater personnel, utilities, etc. I assume the gradual uptrend in the operating expense ratio continues, for two reasons. One, these operating expenses are largely fixed, and revenues will be under pressure. Second, it seems logical that the current labor shortage will pressure pay levels for low-end theater jobs.</p>\n<p>We’re now ready for my earnings and cash flow models:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b8a5ce8ad10adb3336126cdb0a5e598\" tg-width=\"537\" tg-height=\"497\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>The ’22 forecasts are set by the assumptions above through the “gross profit” line. My overhead expense forecast assumes that AMC is working hard to limit expenses through its challenging times:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><i>Depreciation/amortization</i>is a combination of accounting expenses for real estate and acquisitions. Write-downs taken during the pandemic should have reduced these expenses.</li>\n <li><i>Interest expense</i>should decline as AMC pays down some debt with the equity it has been raising.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>The gravitational pull of earnings</b></p>\n<p>We arrive at the bottom line. The best-case scenario I can see for 2022 EPS is roughly breakeven. More likely is a modest loss. Cash flow should be somewhat worse, because the cash capital spending needed by AMC to keep its theaters attractive to a shrinking audience should exceed its non-cash depreciation/amortization expenses. If capital spending is much lower than I forecast, it is probably because AMC management is conceding that it is in a death spiral and wants to milk what cash it can.</p>\n<p><i>The bottom line - no support for investors.</i>AMC’s book value is negative. It appears incapable of earning any material money post-COVID. Its business is in long-term decline due to technology changes, and its new competitors are monster companies – Netflix, Disney, Comcast, etc. – with huge resources. An investor can only look at AMC’s current $55 stock price and with a shudder say, in the immortal words of<i>Trading Places</i>, “Sell Mortimer, sell!”</p>\n<p><b>The speculative play - a short squeeze: A historical cautionary tale</b></p>\n<p>Millennials did not invent the short squeeze. It has been around almost as long financial markets have existed. The book<i>Business Adventures</i>by John Brooks<i>,</i>published way back in 1969, tells a vivid tale of a short squeeze even farther back, in the early 1920s. Literally a century ago. I’m going to quote from the book to suggest how the story ends for speculations with no investor support. So pour yourself some illegal hooch (we’re heading to the Prohibition Era) and read on. This is the story of Clarence Saunders, the founder of Piggly Wiggly Stores, the first supermarket; the Amazon of his day.</p>\n<p>Shorts went after Clarence’s stock in 1922, driving it from $50 to below $40. Saunders vowed revenge with a short squeeze. Here are excerpts of Mr. Brooks’ recounting of the story:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “\n <i>Saunders…bought 33,000 shares of Piggly Wiggly, mostly from short sellers; within a week he had brought the total to 105,000 – more than half of the 200,000 shares outstanding. The effectiveness of Saunders’ buying campaign was readily apparent; by late January of 1923 it had driven he price up over $60…</i>”\n</blockquote>\n<p>The sole short squeezer of yore has been replaced by herds of “apes” today, and the apes have been far better in driving up prices. By the way, believe it or not, a group of apes is apparently called a “shrewdness”. A group of apes is shrewd – interesting.</p>\n<blockquote>\n “\n <i>He had made himself a bundle and had demonstrated how a poor Southern boy could teach the city slickers a lesson.”</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>Today we have apes sticking it to hedge funds.</p>\n<blockquote>\n “\n <i>One of the great hazards in the Corner was always that even though a player might defeat his opponents, he would discover that he had won a Pyrrhic victory. Once the short sellers had been squeezed dry, the cornerer might find that the reams of stock he had accumulated in the process were a dead weight around his neck; by pushing it all back into the market, he would drive its price down to zero.</i>”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Something to think about. What was Saunders to do?</p>\n<blockquote>\n “[\n <i>Saunders’] solution was to sell his $55 shares on the installment plan. In his February advertisements, he stipulated that the public could buy shares only by paying $25 down and the balance in three $10 installments</i>.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Pretty clever, no? No:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “\n <i>At the end of the third day, the total number of shares subscribed for was still under 25,000, and the sales that were made were canceled. Saunders had to admit that the drive had been a failure.”</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>Uh oh. What now?</p>\n<blockquote>\n <i>“On August 22nd, the New York auction firm of Adrian H. Muller &amp; Son…knocked down 1,500 shares of Piggly Wiggly at $1 a share…The following spring Saunders went through formal bankruptcy proceedings.”</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>Ouch.</p>\n<p><b>Buyers beware</b></p>\n<p>As Jason Zweig noted above, speculators depend upon finding a buyer at a higher price. Today’s holders of AMC stock certainly have made life painful for many short sellers. But are there really enough new buyers to take out current shareholders above AMC’s present $28 billion market cap? Especially with the gravity of no earnings constantly weighing on the stock?</p>\n<p>AMC shareholders, don’t win Clarence Saunders’ Pyrrhic victory. Take your $55 a share and run. Fast. I tookone stab at itwith AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc.(NYSE:AMC)a few weeks ago. I’m back for more, after reading two interesting pieces. As Isaac Newton said in 1676, “If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” Now I’m no Isaac Newton. For one, I’m far better looking. But like Zeke – a nickname Isaac’s friends probably never used – I too stand on the shoulders of giants. In this case the shoulders of Jason Zweig, a wonderful financial markets writer forThe Wall Street Journal, and John Brooks, author of “Business Adventures”, a book recommended by Bill Gates. I will quote liberally from both in this article, then draw the line for you to AMC.\nInvestor vs. trader vs. speculator\nJason Zweig graphically distinguished between these three types of stock buyers in hisJune 11, 2021Wall Street Journalcolumn:\n\n “\n Whenever you buy any financial asset because you have a hunch or just for kicks, or because somebody famous is hyping the heck out of it, or everybody else seems to be buying it too, you aren’t investing.You’re definitely a trader: someone who has just bought an asset. And you may be a speculator: someone who thinks other people will pay more for it than you did.”“An investor relies on internal sources of return: earnings, income, growth in the value of assets. A speculator counts on external sources of return: primarily whether somebody else will pay more, regardless of fundamental value.”\n\nSo why has AMC’s stock price been on a tear? I have one informal data source, namely the 300+ comments on my June 4 AMC article. Earnings, income, growth in the value of assetsnevercame up. What did come up was “short squeeze” and stock charts. So I expect Mr. Zweig would describe AMC’s stock as driven by traders and speculators.\nMr. Zweig also made me realize that my AMC article left out an earnings forecast. I gave lots of data on historic trends, which only implied a future direction. I correct that omission here.\nA 2022 AMC earnings forecast\nI start with the key assumptions:\n\nMy time frame for reference is 2017 to 2019. Earlier data is less relevant because AMC made a big acquisition in 2016, and 2020 and 2021 data is even less relevant because of COVID.\nThe national box officeis the major assumption.My June 4 articleshows that movie attendance has been declining since 2002. What will box office be next year? The steady growth in streaming, both in subscribers and content, certainly is a headwind. And COVID logically should increase the shift from offsite (theater) entertainment to home entertainment, as it has for shopping and working. Holding movie attendance near its ’19 level would be a minor miracle. A 10%, or even a 20%, decline is far more likely. As you can see in the table above, I make 2022 AMC EPS forecasts using all three box office assumptions.\nAMC market share.I assume a share increase from AMC’s ’17-’19 level because some competing theaters must have dropped out because of COVID financial pressures.\nAdmissions gross margin.This is the profit from ticket sales less the cost of licensing movies from their producers. I hold AMC steady with ’17-’19, but I can also imagine that movie producers seek better terms because AMC has to bid against a growing pool of streaming services desperate for content.\nFood expenses as a percent of sales.I carry forward the shockingly low number. AMC, and presumably its peers, take their food and beverage costs andmultiply them by 7 in their pricing to us moviegoers.Smuggle in your own Jujifruits and save a bundle. My best financial advice for the year.\nFood and beverage sales as a percent of ticket prices.I assume that AMC’s trend of modest increases continues.\nOperating expensesare the cost of the theater personnel, utilities, etc. I assume the gradual uptrend in the operating expense ratio continues, for two reasons. One, these operating expenses are largely fixed, and revenues will be under pressure. Second, it seems logical that the current labor shortage will pressure pay levels for low-end theater jobs.\nWe’re now ready for my earnings and cash flow models:\n\nThe ’22 forecasts are set by the assumptions above through the “gross profit” line. My overhead expense forecast assumes that AMC is working hard to limit expenses through its challenging times:\n\nDepreciation/amortizationis a combination of accounting expenses for real estate and acquisitions. Write-downs taken during the pandemic should have reduced these expenses.\nInterest expenseshould decline as AMC pays down some debt with the equity it has been raising.\n\nThe gravitational pull of earnings\nWe arrive at the bottom line. The best-case scenario I can see for 2022 EPS is roughly breakeven. More likely is a modest loss. Cash flow should be somewhat worse, because the cash capital spending needed by AMC to keep its theaters attractive to a shrinking audience should exceed its non-cash depreciation/amortization expenses. If capital spending is much lower than I forecast, it is probably because AMC management is conceding that it is in a death spiral and wants to milk what cash it can.\nThe bottom line - no support for investors.AMC’s book value is negative. It appears incapable of earning any material money post-COVID. Its business is in long-term decline due to technology changes, and its new competitors are monster companies – Netflix, Disney, Comcast, etc. – with huge resources. An investor can only look at AMC’s current $55 stock price and with a shudder say, in the immortal words ofTrading Places, “Sell Mortimer, sell!”\nThe speculative play - a short squeeze: A historical cautionary tale\nMillennials did not invent the short squeeze. It has been around almost as long financial markets have existed. The bookBusiness Adventuresby John Brooks,published way back in 1969, tells a vivid tale of a short squeeze even farther back, in the early 1920s. Literally a century ago. I’m going to quote from the book to suggest how the story ends for speculations with no investor support. So pour yourself some illegal hooch (we’re heading to the Prohibition Era) and read on. This is the story of Clarence Saunders, the founder of Piggly Wiggly Stores, the first supermarket; the Amazon of his day.\nShorts went after Clarence’s stock in 1922, driving it from $50 to below $40. Saunders vowed revenge with a short squeeze. Here are excerpts of Mr. Brooks’ recounting of the story:\n\n “\n Saunders…bought 33,000 shares of Piggly Wiggly, mostly from short sellers; within a week he had brought the total to 105,000 – more than half of the 200,000 shares outstanding. The effectiveness of Saunders’ buying campaign was readily apparent; by late January of 1923 it had driven he price up over $60…”\n\nThe sole short squeezer of yore has been replaced by herds of “apes” today, and the apes have been far better in driving up prices. By the way, believe it or not, a group of apes is apparently called a “shrewdness”. A group of apes is shrewd – interesting.\n\n “\n He had made himself a bundle and had demonstrated how a poor Southern boy could teach the city slickers a lesson.”\n\nToday we have apes sticking it to hedge funds.\n\n “\n One of the great hazards in the Corner was always that even though a player might defeat his opponents, he would discover that he had won a Pyrrhic victory. Once the short sellers had been squeezed dry, the cornerer might find that the reams of stock he had accumulated in the process were a dead weight around his neck; by pushing it all back into the market, he would drive its price down to zero.”\n\nSomething to think about. What was Saunders to do?\n\n “[\n Saunders’] solution was to sell his $55 shares on the installment plan. In his February advertisements, he stipulated that the public could buy shares only by paying $25 down and the balance in three $10 installments.”\n\nPretty clever, no? No:\n\n “\n At the end of the third day, the total number of shares subscribed for was still under 25,000, and the sales that were made were canceled. Saunders had to admit that the drive had been a failure.”\n\nUh oh. What now?\n\n“On August 22nd, the New York auction firm of Adrian H. Muller & Son…knocked down 1,500 shares of Piggly Wiggly at $1 a share…The following spring Saunders went through formal bankruptcy proceedings.”\n\nOuch.\nBuyers beware\nAs Jason Zweig noted above, speculators depend upon finding a buyer at a higher price. Today’s holders of AMC stock certainly have made life painful for many short sellers. But are there really enough new buyers to take out current shareholders above AMC’s present $28 billion market cap? Especially with the gravity of no earnings constantly weighing on the stock?\nAMC shareholders, don’t win Clarence Saunders’ Pyrrhic victory. Take your $55 a share and run. Fast. Trading volume has fallen as well, even though mentions of the stocks on Reddit have risen, according to analysis from Bank of America.\n\nTotal activity on Reddit and in the options market suggest the retail trader movement is no longer growing, the firm said in a note.\n“Seventy percent of the stocks on last week’s screen saw shares fall over the past week, AMC a major exception. While conversations generally accelerated for most stocks on our screen last week, overall WallStreetBets conversations have barely risen in recent weeks, and retail options usage remains well-below 1Q21, suggesting broader participation beyond just retail,” Bank of America said.\nAs of Wednesday’s close, AMC was up 12% over the past week. While one would expect this king of all meme stocks to soar following reports of&nbsp;record-breaking&nbsp;Labor Day weekend box office ticket sales, a bit of Tuesday's near-9% gain from AMC shares is also unwinding with Wednesday's1% sell-off. While that's hardly a devastating setback, the failure to follow through on Tuesday's advance is telling in and of itself.</p>\n<p>Of course, the broad market's sell-off today is also creating a headwind for these well-known meme stocks.</p>\n<p><b>Now what</b></p>\n<p>The advent of&nbsp;meme stock&nbsp;mania (and in particular, organized efforts to spark short squeezes) comes as no real surprise. Of course, you should never invest money you can't afford to lose, but this dire warning should still rattle current and prospective shareholders.</p>\n<p>If you're not convinced, let's look at AMC's financial results. Last year, attendance and revenue fell 79% and 77%, respectively. And despite reopening roughly <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-third&nbsp;of its international theaters and two-thirds of its domestic theaters, its performance has actually worsened this year. Attendance and revenue plunged 89% and 84%, respectively, during the first quarter.</p>\n<p>Understandably, some investors are hoping things improve as the economy reopens. But that may be too late -- the competitive landscape has already shifted dramatically.</p>\n<p>During the pandemic, streaming services like HBO Max and Peacock went live, Disney+ started taking titles directly to consumers, and Universal Studios cut the theatrical exclusivity window to 17 days&nbsp;-- prior to the pandemic, AMC retained exclusive rights for about 90 days. Put simply, the company is facing more competition than ever before.</p>\n<p>As a final thought, in a recent 10-Q Filing with the SEC, AMC explained that it will need to reach 85% of pre-pandemic attendance levels by the fourth quarter of 2021 in order to comply with minimum liquidity requirements. If that doesn't happen, bankruptcy would likely be the next step, which means shareholders would \"suffer a total loss of their investment.\"</p>\n<h2>Cloudflare</h2>\n<p>Cloudflare is a cloud services provider. Its platform helps clients secure and accelerate the performance of websites and applications. For example, it recently launched Cloudflare One, a network-as-a-service solution designed to replace outdated corporate networks.</p>\n<p>Traditionally, enterprises have taken a castle-and-moat approach to network security. All sensitive data was stored in a central location, and firewall appliances and internet gateways&nbsp;were used to filter incoming and outgoing traffic. This was both costly and inefficient, often resulting in lag time for remote workers.</p>\n<p>By comparison, Cloudflare One acts as a secure access service edge&nbsp;(SASE). Rather than sending traffic through a central hub, SASE is a distributed network architecture. This means employees connect to Cloudflare's network, where traffic is filtered and security policies are enforced, then traffic is routed to the internet or the corporate network.</p>\n<p>This creates a fast, secure experience for employees, allowing them to access corporate resources and applications&nbsp;from any location, on any device. Moreover, according to research firm Gartner, 40%&nbsp;of enterprises will have plans to adopt SASE by 2024, up from just 1% in 2018. That radical shift gives Cloudflare a big opportunity.</p>\n<p>More importantly, the company is executing on that opportunity. There were moments during the most acute phases of lockdowns when the company's survival was in jeopardy. Management can be commended for urgently raising cash and cutting costs, and ensuring it had the resources to make it through.</p>\n<h2>Fundamentals matter</h2>\n<p>Some of the capital the company raised during the pandemic was through borrowing. Its balance sheet has swelled to contain $5.4 billion in debt, and in the most recent quarter, the company paid interest expenses of $151.5 million. So while it's great news that big-ticket movies are returning to movie theaters, AMC still has a lot of work to do before it fully bounces back. But many others are likely to get burned when the stock price finally returns to more normal levels.</p>\n<p>If you own shares, here are three reasons to sell AMC stock right now.</p>\n<h3>1. Fundamentals always matter</h3>\n<p>Famed investor Benjamin Graham once said: \"In the short run, the market is a voting machine; but in the long run, it is a weighing machine.\" In other words, popularity drives price action in the short term, but fundamentals matter more over time.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/61107d3657db19f73a4afdc7a9e9a8e5\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"458\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images</p>\n<p>Anecdotally, I've read comments from a shocking number of AMC shareholders who assert that fundamentals (things like revenue, cash flow, and valuation) simply don't matter. When confronted with these metrics, they dismiss them and instead resort to accusations of short interest. And maybe some of the dissenters are short-sellers, but I have never been long or short AMC stock.</p>\n<p>Here's the unfortunate truth: Fundamentals always matter. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but eventually the stock price will reflect that. And if AMC's financial picture doesn't improve, the stock price will eventually plunge. And management knows that.</p>\n<p>In fact, in a recently filed Form 8-K, management issued this warning to shareholders: \"Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our [stock], unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment.\"</p>\n<h3>2. AMC stock is wildly overvalued</h3>\n<p>The pandemic hit AMC hard last year, forcing the company to shutter theaters around the world. Not surprisingly, that sparked sharp declines in attendance, sales, and profitability. If AMC was competing in a high-growth industry, its present valuation might not be alarming. But it competes in a slow-growing sector of the entertainment industry. P/S multiples reflect data from the last day of each quarter.</p>\n<p>I'll end with this observation: Competition from streaming services has never been greater, and AMC's financial performance has never been weaker, so why is AMC stock valued more highly than ever before? At its current price, this is a dangerous investment.</p>\n<h3>3. AMC has a liquidity problem</h3>\n<p>Before the pandemic, AMC had $265 million in cash and $4.7 billion in debt on its balance sheet. It also had $4.9 billion in operating lease liabilities (i.e., rent).</p>\n<p>When the pandemic hit, the company deferred a portion of its rent, but still couldn't cover operating expenses and interest payments. So AMC issued more debt and new shares several times during 2020, effectively digging the hole deeper.</p>\n<p>As of March 31, 2021, AMC's balance sheet was insolvent&nbsp;-- even if the company sold every last asset, it still wouldn't have enough cash to cover its liabilities.</p>\n<p>Now, in order to meet its minimum liquidity requirements, attendance must reach 85% of pre-COVID levels by the fourth quarter of this year. If that doesn't happen, management said it would likely seek a \"restructuring of [its] liabilities.\" That's a fancy phrase that means shareholders would be completely wiped out.</p>\n<p>So let's ignore the red flags raised by AMC's valuation. Investors still need to ask this question: Can attendance reach 85% of pre-pandemic levels in that time frame? If you aren't certain the answer is yes, then it's time to sell this stock. The term refers to equities that have skyrocketed in value without any fundamental justification but are instead seeing their stock prices turn quite volatile based mostly on hype, often from social media platforms.\nNotably, AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:AMC) is among the most popular meme stocks at the moment. Its share price has surged 2,500% this year, driven by irrational enthusiasm from retail investors looking to strike it rich. And some have certainly succeeded, becoming millionaires almost overnight. But many others are likely to get burned when the stock price finally returns to more normal levels.\nIf you own shares, here are three reasons to sell AMC stock right now.\n1. Fundamentals always matter\nFamed investor Benjamin Graham once said: \"In the short run, the market is a voting machine; but in the long run, it is a weighing machine.\" In other words, popularity drives price action in the short term, but fundamentals matter more over time.\n\nImage source: Getty Images\nAnecdotally, I've read comments from a shocking number of AMC shareholders who assert that fundamentals (things like revenue, cash flow, and valuation) simply don't matter. When confronted with these metrics, they dismiss them and instead resort to accusations of short interest. And maybe some of the dissenters are short-sellers, but I have never been long or short AMC stock.\nHere's the unfortunate truth: Fundamentals always matter. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but eventually the stock price will reflect that. And if AMC's financial picture doesn't improve, the stock price will eventually plunge. And management knows that.\nIn fact, in a recently filed Form 8-K, management issued this warning to shareholders: \"Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our [stock], unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment.\"\n2. AMC stock is wildly overvalued\nThe pandemic hit AMC hard last year, forcing the company to shutter theaters around the world. Not surprisingly, that sparked sharp declines in attendance, sales, and profitability. If AMC was competing in a high-growth industry, its present valuation might not be alarming. But it competes in a slow-growing sector of the entertainment industry. P/S multiples reflect data from the last day of each quarter.\nI'll end with this observation: Competition from streaming services has never been greater, and AMC's financial performance has never been weaker, so why is AMC stock valued more highly than ever before? At its current price, this is a dangerous investment.\n3. AMC has a liquidity problem\nBefore the pandemic, AMC had $265 million in cash and $4.7 billion in debt on its balance sheet. It also had $4.9 billion in operating lease liabilities (i.e., rent).\nWhen the pandemic hit, the company deferred a portion of its rent, but still couldn't cover operating expenses and interest payments. So AMC issued more debt and new shares several times during 2020, effectively digging the hole deeper.\nAs of March 31, 2021, AMC's balance sheet was insolvent -- even if the company sold every last asset, it still wouldn't have enough cash to cover its liabilities.\nNow, in order to meet its minimum liquidity requirements, attendance must reach 85% of pre-COVID levels by the fourth quarter of this year. If that doesn't happen, management said it would likely seek a \"restructuring of [its] liabilities.\" That's a fancy phrase that means shareholders would be completely wiped out.\nSo let's ignore the red flags raised by AMC's valuation. Investors still need to ask this question: Can attendance reach 85% of pre-pandemic levels in that time frame? If you aren't certain the answer is yes, then it's time to sell this stock.
