Those veins are part of a network of crisscrossing veins and veinlets.</li>\n <li>The Lynx Gold Zone is now exposed 90 meters long by 25 meters wide and is open in all directions.</li>\n <li>The structural characterization by Stefan Kruse of Terrane Geoscience identified two main veins sets hosting the mineralization (Figure 3).</li>\n <li>The contact between the rhyolite and the sediments appears to be the main control of the gold-bearing quartz veins.</li>\n <li>The drill pads are prepared and ready for the drilling operations.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>Figure 3: <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWOA.U\">Two</a> Main Veins Sets Hosting the Gold Mineralisation from O’Neil to Lynx</b> is available at https://www.globenewswire.com/NewsRoom/AttachmentNg/6ffd1b97-f6cc-4565-ad4e-9c0737ca90b6</p>\n<p>The 2021 summer field exploration program is targeting the Williams Brook Gold property (see Figure 4) with the focus on the recent major discovery named O’Neil Gold Trend (OGT) <b>followed by trenching over 700m with bonanza grades up to 241.0 g/t Au</b> (see news released 2021-03-31).</p>\n<p><b>O’Neil Gold Trend (OGT)</b></p>\n<p><b>The O’Neil Gold Trend (OGT)</b> is a pervasive altered and brecciated rhyolite unit hosting significant gold showings and occurences followed by trenching over a strike length of <b>700 meters. </b>The geophysical signature of the OGT is expressed over 7km. The favourable unit (rhyolite) is similar and parallel to the structures hosting the “Williams 1” and “Williams 2” Gold Zones with selected drill results of <b>11.2 g/t over 2.8m, 2.1 g/t Au over 9.0m, and 1.0 g/t over 23m</b>.</p>\n<p>These trends are interpreted to be related to a major rifting in the New Brunswick Geological events and could represent a low sulphidation epithermal gold system. Along the OGT, the width of the altered horizon varies from 5 to 250 meters with an average apparent thickness of 150 meters.</p>\n<p>Numerous quartz veins, quartz veinlets, stockworks and breccias were observed mostly perpendicular to the major trend and contain the gold mineralization. The geophysical signature of the OGT is expressed over 7km. The favourable unit (rhyolite) is similar and parallel to the structures hosting the “Williams 1” and “Williams 2” Gold Zones with selected drill results of 11.2 g/t over 2.8m, 2.1 g/t Au over 9.0m, and 1.0 g/t over 23m.\nThese trends are interpreted to be related to a major rifting in the New Brunswick Geological events and could represent a low sulphidation epithermal gold system. Most likely, when that is posted&nbsp;on the Fed’s website&nbsp;at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, most folks will probably head straight for the FOMC’s guesses on the fed-funds rate, and specifically when liftoff from near-zero is finally expected.</p>\n<p>The “dot plot”—or graph of the FOMC members’ consensus guesses—puts the first hike all the way out past 2023. That seems a very long-term forecast, and as John Maynard Keynes famously pointed out, in the long run we’re all dead. Some Fed watchers, such as J.P. Morgan’s chief U.S. economist, Michael Feroli, look for the dots to show a 2023 liftoff.</p>\n<p>The markets, however, already had been pricing in one or more fed-funds rate hikes by 2023. But concurrent with the previously discussed slide in longer-term bond yields, the interest-rate futures markets have effectively priced out one of those short-term rate increases. In addition, the derivatives market now sees the fed-funds rate peaking under 2%, some 0.4 of a percentage point lower than what it had priced in earlier this year, according to analysts for&nbsp;Natixis.</p>\n<p>Long before making any rate hikes, the Fed will begin to lessen its accommodation by slowing its current pace of securities purchases, which consist of $80 billion of Treasuries and $40 billion of agency mortgage-backed securities every month. The trillions that the Federal Reserve and other central banks have created have gone a long way to boost the values of assets, which rose by $5 trillion, to $136.9 trillion, in the first quarter, according to new Fed data released this past week. That includes a $3.2 trillion rise in the value of equities owned by households and a $968 billion rise in their real estate holdings.</p>\n<p>The key criterion for reduced Fed accommodation is whether the monetary authorities see “substantial further progress” toward reaching what they deem as maximum employment, probably a deliberately ambiguous standard.</p>\n<p>But the increase in payrolls appears to be constrained as much by the supply of labor as businesses’ desire to hire. The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or Jolts, showed&nbsp;a record 9.3 million unfilled openings&nbsp;in April. In addition, 384,000 people left their positions that month, bringing the total of voluntary job quitters to a record four million.</p>\n<p>Anecdotal evidence, including some in the Fed’s beige book summary of economic conditions prepared for the coming meeting, suggests that employers aren’t finding enough workers because of generous unemployment compensation. Unusual for a social science such as economics, there will be a real-time experiment to test this hypothesis as 25 states end the extra $300 weekly payment early.</p>\n<p>Jefferies economists Aneta Markowska and Thomas Simons write in a research note that these 25 states account for about a quarter of all the unemployed workers. Ending their extra jobless benefits could boost employment by roughly two million in the next few months, they estimate. Another growth spurt should follow in September and October after the extra unemployment insurance expires in the remaining states; schools reopen—providing free daycare for some would-be workers, especially women; and many office employees return to their desks, they add.</p>\n<p>At that point, the Fed might start talking about actually reducing its massive securities purchases. Given the “taper tantrum” thrown by the markets when the central bank slowed its bond buying in 2013, this Fed will want to disclose how, when, and how fast it plans to slow its pour into the punch bowl. The video game retailer plummeted 27% on Thursday, but it moved nicely higher the other four days of the week -- trimming its weeklong decline to just 6%.</li>\n <li>AMC closed out the week with a 3% gain, following the 83% burst higher the week before. The multiplex operator is benefiting from a surge in box office receipts, but they continue to track at less than half of where the industry was two years ago.</li>\n <li>Finally we have Carnival sinking 2% for the week. Cruise stocks have been buoyant ahead of a return to sailing this month, but we're already seeing COVID-19 cases pop up in the limited number of voyages taking place so far.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Those three stocks averaged a 1.7% decline for the week. The <b>S&amp;P 500</b> rose by 0.4% in that time, so I won. Right now, I see <b>Royal Caribbean</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:RCL), AMC Entertainment Holdings, and <b>Osprey Bitcoin Trust</b> (OTC:OBTC) as vulnerable investments in the near term. Here's why I think these are three stocks to avoid this week.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/844fa22418b0d6398103c6917b0d7eb3\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"459\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>1. Royal Caribbean</h2>\n<p>This was supposed to be the summer that the cruise industry finally roars back into being, but we're already seeing some choppy waters. Royal Caribbean's <i>Celebrity Millennium</i> became the first major cruise ship available to North American seafarers earlier this month since the industry shut down last March. A few days into the maiden voyage, a pair of passengers contracted the COVID-19 virus.</p>\n<p>There's also an operational standoff in Royal Caribbean's home state of Florida, where the governor is threatening to fine cruise lines for requiring vaccinations of its passengers. It's a Catch-22 for the industry, as the CDC requires at least 95% of a ship's passengers to be fully vaccinated to resume sailings without having to go through a series of costly test cruises.</p>\n<p>Royal Caribbean is my favorite of the three cruise lines as an investment, but it's also held up the best during the lull. With the reopening off to a bumpy start it also makes the stock vulnerable here.</p>\n<h2><b>2. AMC Entertainment</b></h2>\n<p>I'm a fan of a lot that AMC Entertainment has done to get bet better at a time when many of its smaller rivals have been merely walking in place. The country's largest multiplex operator has upped its seat reservations and mobile order tech and carved out a new revenue stream with actively promoted private rentals. The new Investor Connect program is sheer genius, monetizing its newborn attention as a meme stock with millions of retail investors by trying to convert them into customers.</p>\n<p>However, after ballooning its share count north of 500 million -- and the stock still moving higher -- there will eventually be a price to be paid in terms of valuation. AMC Entertainment enters this week with an enterprise value above $35 billion, and sooner or later someone is going to have to pay the tab at the end of the party.</p>\n<p>AMC is doing the right things to stay on top of a declining industry, but it's not enough to justify today's sticker price.&nbsp; This has historically been a low-margin business -- in the low single digits for net margin most years -- despite the markup on concessions. You'll see a year-over-year bounce this year, but we may never return to 2019 as a baseline. Theatrical release windows are being shattered by streaming initiatives. AMC has bloated its debt levels and share count to stay alive, but all of this comes at a price that right now seems too dear to pay.</p>\n<h2>3. Osprey Bitcoin Trust</h2>\n<p>I believe in keeping a small percent of your risk-tolerant portfolio in crypto, but not every vehicle is in the same boat. Osprey Bitcoin Trust offers investors a low-cost way to play the popularity of <b>Bitcoin</b> (CRYPTO:BTC) in a stock exchange-listed vehicle.</p>\n<p>Osprey Bitcoin Trust is a lot smaller than the market's original Bitcoin-owning trust, and it's also trading at an unsustainable premium. Osprey's mark-up to its stake of Bitcoin tokens has been contracting since hitting the market earlier this year, and I was starting to get interested when the premium narrowed to 12% a week ago.</p>\n<p>The mark-up is going the wrong way again. Osprey Bitcoin Trust owns what is currently $12.68 in Bitcoin, but it closed last week at $14.95. AMC Entertainment\nI'm a fan of a lot that AMC Entertainment has done to get bet better at a time when many of its smaller rivals have been merely walking in place. The country's largest multiplex operator has upped its seat reservations and mobile order tech and carved out a new revenue stream with actively promoted private rentals. The new Investor Connect program is sheer genius, monetizing its newborn attention as a meme stock with millions of retail investors by trying to convert them into customers.\nHowever, after ballooning its share count north of 500 million -- and the stock still moving higher -- there will eventually be a price to be paid in terms of valuation. AMC Entertainment enters this week with an enterprise value above $35 billion, and sooner or later someone is going to have to pay the tab at the end of the party.\nAMC is doing the right things to stay on top of a declining industry, but it's not enough to justify today's sticker price.  This has historically been a low-margin business -- in the low single digits for net margin most years -- despite the markup on concessions. You'll see a year-over-year bounce this year, but we may never return to 2019 as a baseline. Theatrical release windows are being shattered by streaming initiatives. AMC has bloated its debt levels and share count to stay alive, but all of this comes at a price that right now seems too dear to pay.\n3. But coming into 2021, the market had actually done quite well. It shrugged off a global pandemic and made it through a hostile presidential election. It didn’t even flinch during the early January drama in Washington, D.C., when rioters stormed the Capitol.</p>\n<p>All of that helped lead to the massive rally we saw later in the month and into February. High-growth stocks, SPACs, IPOs and these new Reddit stocks were all the rage.</p>\n<p>Call them what you will, but these stocks have the potential to go on torrid rallies. Some rally hundreds of percent, others can jump thousands of percent over the course of weeks or months. Conversely, many see large gains that evaporate within a few days.</p>\n<p>That price action has gone from one or two stocks and has now spilled into dozens of different names.<b>AMC Entertainment</b>(NYSE:<b><u>AMC</u></b>) has been the recent leader. Then we see all sorts of epic short-squeezes higher.</p>\n<p><b>GameStop (GME)</b></p>\n<p>Can we even talk about Reddit stocks without talking about GameStop? Shares are trading well lately, but they haven’t soared like some of these other names. That said, GameStop is roughly a $250 stock — not a single-digit or sub-$20 name, like many others on this list.</p>\n<p>The company just reported earnings, beating both top- and bottom-line expectations. However the reaction was pretty tough, with shares tumbling on the report. Given its size, it may be difficult for investors to bid GME stock significantly higher, particularly now that its short interest has dropped to a more reasonable level.</p>\n<p>Still, GameStop has been one of the&nbsp;leaders of this short-squeeze movement&nbsp;and that means it could take off at any time.</p>\n<p>The company’s chairman is Ryan Cohen, co-founder and former CEO of&nbsp;<b>Chewy</b>(NYSE:<b><u>CHWY</u></b>). He’s looking for a new CEO who can lead the company’s e-commerce strategy.</p>\n<p>The valuation is high, but good news could trigger more upside. Keep an eye on this one.</p>\n<p><b>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond (BBBY)</b></p>\n<p>I actually nominated Bed Bath &amp; Beyond as&nbsp;my pick for the Best Stock of 2021. However, I didn’t do it under the assumption that “Reddit traders” and “meme stocks” would become a thing. When I initially covered this stock, it was all about the company’s transformation.</p>\n<p>Okay fine… part of the thesis<i>was</i>the massive short interest in BBBY stock coming into 2021. Still, I didn’t think we’d see such epic short squeezes across the board.</p>\n<p>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond still has about 65% of its float sold short, although that figure is smaller vs. shares outstanding. Still, the company has turned things around as it focuses on e-commerce and omni-channel solutions. That’s helping fuel BBBY’s free cash flow and earnings and has allowed management to initiate a rather large share repurchase plan.</p>\n<p><b>BlackBerry (BB)</b></p>\n<p>With its low price point and legion of loyal bull traders, BlackBerry has found its way onto the list of traders’ favorite short-squeeze stocks.</p>\n<p>Seriously, there are some dedicated investors in this name. Some have been waiting for years. Others are new to the party. But both groups — and everyone in between — are looking at the bullish potential with BB stock.</p>\n<p>While BlackBerry may not have its smartphone in every business-person’s pocket anymore thanks to&nbsp;<b>Apple</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AAPL</u></b>), it does have good software. It also has strong security.</p>\n<p>Interestingly, the automotive industry has become a big contributor to BlackBerry’s business, thanks to all the software, security and interconnectivity of today’s vehicles. Again, good news could create a nice pop in this one if the bulls maintain momentum.</p>\n<p><b>Virgin Galactic (SPCE)</b></p>\n<p>Virgin Galactic has been a short-squeeze favorite for a while now. It’s simply too juicy of a stock<i>not</i>to trade when the environment is right. But let’s not miss Virgin for what it is — this is a&nbsp;speculative stock holding.</p>\n<p>The company doesn’t generate any meaningful revenue and currently operates at a loss due to development and operational overhead. Understandably, short-sellers like to lay into this one as a result. I mean, with no real revenue and an $8.5 billion market cap, who can blame them?</p>\n<p>However, when the short interest gets high (as it often does for SPCE stock), buyers can’t resist the urge to squeeze.</p>\n<p>Virgin hopes to become a space tourism company and is well on its way with its flight milestones. Additionally, it’s working&nbsp;with NASA on high-speed technology. The company recently filed for a shelf registration to sell up to $1 billion in stock, which only makes sense amid the current rally.</p>\n<p>While this would usually sap some of its momentum, a stock offering may trigger more upside in this crazy climate.</p>\n<p><b>Wendy’s (WEN)</b></p>\n<p>Wendy’s has suddenly found itself with a chair at the short-squeeze table. And honestly, this is a fascinating one for me.</p>\n<p>Shares were trading in relatively normal fashion and Wendy’s was never one of the big Reddit stocks back in January. But that didn’t stop the stock from surging more than 25% in a single day. This one is puzzling.</p>\n<p>Wendy’s stock doesn’t have a high short interest (less than 5%). It does have solid growth expectations, but that’s mostly due to a post-coronavirus rebound. However, revenue is forecast to grow 6.7% this year and 2.5% in 2022.</p>\n<p>Where all the hype is coming from, I’m not sure. But if the stock can&nbsp;hold up around $24 to $25, maybe it can retest its highs.</p>\n<p><b>Rocket Companies (RKT)</b></p>\n<p>Rocket Companies has taken the shorts to task before and I’m sure its investors would love nothing more than to do it again. That’s particularly true as shares fell 30% from the May high to the May low. And that<i>doesn’t</i>include the beatdown that Rocket Companies suffered from its first major squeeze higher in March.</p>\n<p>For the record, shares fell more than 60% from that peak to the May trough.</p>\n<p>Since then though, Rocket has found its footing. Unlike Wendy’s, this one does have a higher short interest, although at around 14%, it isn’t exactly high compared to previous Reddit stocks.</p>\n<p>But management has taken its own shots too. When the company reported earnings in February, it announced a special dividend of $1.11 per share. When holding short, short-sellers have to pay the per-share dividend out of their holdings. Further, the company announced a&nbsp;$1 billion buyback in November.</p>\n<p><b>ContextLogic (WISH)</b></p>\n<p>ContextLogic came public at the end of 2020 in mid-December. So I don’t know that I would classify it as one of the original Reddit stocks based on its rally in the first quarter. But the recent price action has “meme stock” written all over it.</p>\n<p>Its rally in Q1 did take ContextLogic north of $30. However, that was likely due to wider market trends, as growth stocks, SPACs, IPOs and other speculative holdings were surging higher.</p>\n<p>This time around though, WISH stock is clearly in focus. With a short interest over 15% and a cheap share price (it was near $7.50 a couple days ago), this one was ripe for some attention. It helps that the stock fell almost 80% from peak to trough.</p>\n<p>It also has solid growth estimates, with revenue expectations of 20% in each of the next three years. The company operates a global e-commerce platform that helps connect users to merchants, while providing various services to the latter.</p>\n<p><b>Palantir (PLTR)</b></p>\n<p>Palantir has somewhat fallen by the wayside lately. While the bulls still love the company’s long-term prospects and as the company continues to add more contracts, the stock price has struggled.</p>\n<p>Like Rocket, shares fell more than 62% from peak to trough, although that’s also counting from the stock’s short-squeeze fueled rally a few months ago. Since then, investors have seen a 40% rally from last month’s low.</p>\n<p>The analyst community is&nbsp;pretty optimistic on this one. They expect 35% revenue growth this year, then 28.5% growth in each of the next two years. That’s pretty darn good and helps justify that 23 times forward revenue valuation it currently commands.</p>\n<p>While it doesn’t have huge short interest at the moment, Palantir is a momentum favorite. With a short interest over 15% and a cheap share price (it was near $7.50 a couple days ago), this one was ripe for some attention. It helps that the stock fell almost 80% from peak to trough.\nIt also has solid growth estimates, with revenue expectations of 20% in each of the next three years. The company operates a global e-commerce platform that helps connect users to merchants, while providing various services to the latter.\nPalantir (PLTR)\nPalantir has somewhat fallen by the wayside lately. While the bulls still love the company’s long-term prospects and as the company continues to add more contracts, the stock price has struggled.\nLike Rocket, shares fell more than 62% from peak to trough, although that’s also counting from the stock’s short-squeeze fueled rally a few months ago. Since then, investors have seen a 40% rally from last month’s low.\nThe analyst community is pretty optimistic on this one. They expect 35% revenue growth this year, then 28.5% growth in each of the next two years. That’s pretty darn good and helps justify that 23 times forward revenue valuation it currently commands.\nWhile it doesn’t have huge short interest at the moment, Palantir is a momentum favorite. The favourable unit (rhyolite) is similar and parallel to the structures hosting the “Williams 1” and “Williams 2” Gold Zones with selected drill results of <b>11.2 g/t over 2.8m, 2.1 g/t Au over 9.0m, and 1.0 g/t over 23m</b>.</p>\n<p>These trends are interpreted to be related to a major rifting in the New Brunswick Geological events and could represent a low sulphidation epithermal gold system. Along the OGT, the width of the altered horizon varies from 5 to 250 meters with an average apparent thickness of 150 meters.</p>\n<p>Numerous quartz veins, quartz veinlets, stockworks and breccias were observed mostly perpendicular to the major trend and contain the gold mineralization. What everybody wants to know is whether the panel finally has gotten around to talking about talking about moving away from its ubereasy monetary policy.</p>\n<p>We all know that the FOMC won’t take any substantive steps in terms of its massive securities purchases, which are still running at $120 billion a month. As for its key federal-funds rate target, that’s stuck at 0% to 0.25% (although there’s an outside chance of technical tweaking of some other Fed-administered rates to address the billions in excess cash sloshing around in the money markets).</p>\n<p>We’ll be looking for what’s in the FOMC’s formal policy statement and the panel’s updated Summary of Economic Projections, which will include the amalgam of the committee members’ guesses on key economic gauges, such as gross domestic product, inflation, and unemployment. Most likely, when that is posted&nbsp;on the Fed’s website&nbsp;at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, most folks will probably head straight for the FOMC’s guesses on the fed-funds rate, and specifically when liftoff from near-zero is finally expected.</p>\n<p>The “dot plot”—or graph of the FOMC members’ consensus guesses—puts the first hike all the way out past 2023. That seems a very long-term forecast, and as John Maynard Keynes famously pointed out, in the long run we’re all dead. Some Fed watchers, such as J.P. Morgan’s chief U.S. economist, Michael Feroli, look for the dots to show a 2023 liftoff.</p>\n<p>The markets, however, already had been pricing in one or more fed-funds rate hikes by 2023. But concurrent with the previously discussed slide in longer-term bond yields, the interest-rate futures markets have effectively priced out one of those short-term rate increases. In addition, the derivatives market now sees the fed-funds rate peaking under 2%, some 0.4 of a percentage point lower than what it had priced in earlier this year, according to analysts for&nbsp;Natixis.</p>\n<p>Long before making any rate hikes, the Fed will begin to lessen its accommodation by slowing its current pace of securities purchases, which consist of $80 billion of Treasuries and $40 billion of agency mortgage-backed securities every month. The trillions that the Federal Reserve and other central banks have created have gone a long way to boost the values of assets, which rose by $5 trillion, to $136.9 trillion, in the first quarter, according to new Fed data released this past week. That includes a $3.2 trillion rise in the value of equities owned by households and a $968 billion rise in their real estate holdings.</p>\n<p>The key criterion for reduced Fed accommodation is whether the monetary authorities see “substantial further progress” toward reaching what they deem as maximum employment, probably a deliberately ambiguous standard.</p>\n<p>But the increase in payrolls appears to be constrained as much by the supply of labor as businesses’ desire to hire. The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or Jolts, showed&nbsp;a record 9.3 million unfilled openings&nbsp;in April. In addition, 384,000 people left their positions that month, bringing the total of voluntary job quitters to a record four million.</p>\n<p>Anecdotal evidence, including some in the Fed’s beige book summary of economic conditions prepared for the coming meeting, suggests that employers aren’t finding enough workers because of generous unemployment compensation. Unusual for a social science such as economics, there will be a real-time experiment to test this hypothesis as 25 states end the extra $300 weekly payment early.</p>\n<p>Jefferies economists Aneta Markowska and Thomas Simons write in a research note that these 25 states account for about a quarter of all the unemployed workers. Ending their extra jobless benefits could boost employment by roughly two million in the next few months, they estimate. Another growth spurt should follow in September and October after the extra unemployment insurance expires in the remaining states; schools reopen—providing free daycare for some would-be workers, especially women; and many office employees return to their desks, they add.</p>\n<p>At that point, the Fed might start talking about actually reducing its massive securities purchases. Given the “taper tantrum” thrown by the markets when the central bank slowed its bond buying in 2013, this Fed will want to disclose how, when, and how fast it plans to slow its pour into the punch bowl. As for its key federal-funds rate target, that’s stuck at 0% to 0.25% (although there’s an outside chance of technical tweaking of some other Fed-administered rates to address the billions in excess cash sloshing around in the money markets).\nWe’ll be looking for what’s in the FOMC’s formal policy statement and the panel’s updated Summary of Economic Projections, which will include the amalgam of the committee members’ guesses on key economic gauges, such as gross domestic product, inflation, and unemployment. Most likely, when that is posted on the Fed’s website at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, most folks will probably head straight for the FOMC’s guesses on the fed-funds rate, and specifically when liftoff from near-zero is finally expected.\nThe “dot plot”—or graph of the FOMC members’ consensus guesses—puts the first hike all the way out past 2023. That seems a very long-term forecast, and as John Maynard Keynes famously pointed out, in the long run we’re all dead. Some Fed watchers, such as J.P. Morgan’s chief U.S. economist, Michael Feroli, look for the dots to show a 2023 liftoff.\nThe markets, however, already had been pricing in one or more fed-funds rate hikes by 2023. But concurrent with the previously discussed slide in longer-term bond yields, the interest-rate futures markets have effectively priced out one of those short-term rate increases. In addition, the derivatives market now sees the fed-funds rate peaking under 2%, some 0.4 of a percentage point lower than what it had priced in earlier this year, according to analysts for Natixis.\nLong before making any rate hikes, the Fed will begin to lessen its accommodation by slowing its current pace of securities purchases, which consist of $80 billion of Treasuries and $40 billion of agency mortgage-backed securities every month. The trillions that the Federal Reserve and other central banks have created have gone a long way to boost the values of assets, which rose by $5 trillion, to $136.9 trillion, in the first quarter, according to new Fed data released this past week. That includes a $3.2 trillion rise in the value of equities owned by households and a $968 billion rise in their real estate holdings.\nThe key criterion for reduced Fed accommodation is whether the monetary authorities see “substantial further progress” toward reaching what they deem as maximum employment, probably a deliberately ambiguous standard.\nBut the increase in payrolls appears to be constrained as much by the supply of labor as businesses’ desire to hire. The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or Jolts, showed a record 9.3 million unfilled openings in April. In addition, 384,000 people left their positions that month, bringing the total of voluntary job quitters to a record four million.\nAnecdotal evidence, including some in the Fed’s beige book summary of economic conditions prepared for the coming meeting, suggests that employers aren’t finding enough workers because of generous unemployment compensation. Unusual for a social science such as economics, there will be a real-time experiment to test this hypothesis as 25 states end the extra $300 weekly payment early.\nJefferies economists Aneta Markowska and Thomas Simons write in a research note that these 25 states account for about a quarter of all the unemployed workers. Ending their extra jobless benefits could boost employment by roughly two million in the next few months, they estimate. Another growth spurt should follow in September and October after the extra unemployment insurance expires in the remaining states; schools reopen—providing free daycare for some would-be workers, especially women; and many office employees return to their desks, they add.\nAt that point, the Fed might start talking about actually reducing its massive securities purchases. Given the “taper tantrum” thrown by the markets when the central bank slowed its bond buying in 2013, this Fed will want to disclose how, when, and how fast it plans to slow its pour into the punch bowl.
