It provides even further evidence that inflation is embedded within this economy and bubbling up again. The used car index price is up 7.5% since the November lower. This type of data will probably feed into the inflation expectations continuing to rise.</p><p>Inflation swaps have risen dramatically since the CPI report last week. The February CPI inflation now sees inflation at 6.01%, which is up from 5.78% on January 13, the day before the CPI report. Meanwhile, the March CPI inflation swap is trading at 4.98%, up from 4.85% the day before the CPI report. These inflation swaps tell us that the market expects inflation to be persistently higher than previously expected and that expectations for that fast roll-off in data may be far slower than expected.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/80d951687ba73ef1f8b050a29073f1cb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"356\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><p>Even worse, the pipe dream that inflation would hit 2% by June is long gone. Inflation swaps for June are now 2.8%, up 80 bps from the January 9 low of 2.03%.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/392857106146c96a18a47062f3613b59\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"267\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><p>The PCE report is expected to come on Friday as well, showing that inflation in January will also be hot. PCE month-over-month in January is forecast to have increased by 0.5% month-over-month from 0.1% and be up by 5% year-over-year, in line with the December reading. Meanwhile, core PCE is expected to rise by 0.4% month-over-month versus an increase of 0.3% in December and 4.3% year-over-year, down from 4.4% in December. That would undoubtedly be a big blow again to the hope that inflation would ride off into the sunset.</p><p>But more importantly, this presents a real problem to the bullish narrative because the higher inflation stays, the higher rates will have to go. Historically, the year-over-year PCE is still more than 1.15% above the 30-year Treasury rate. That has only happened two other times in recent history, in the fall of 1979 and the summer of 1980, and it was brief, and the PCE year-over-year was just 0.3% above the 30-year rate. The inflation rate hasn&#39;t exceeded the 30-year Treasury in modern history.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9cc9ffb43458d7d938bfaf532b549096\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"357\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><p>However, long-term rates have been slow to rise because the market has believed that inflation would be fast to come down. But the longer inflation stays high, and the slower it takes to fall, the more likely it becomes that long-term rates will rise above the inflation.</p><p>On average, the 30-year rate has traded 3.12% above the PCE inflation rate, implying an 8.12% 30-year rate, assuming PCE comes in at 5% this week. So either inflation needs to start falling fast, or long-term rates will have to head much higher soon.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9e2dcb9072feac5bc4f8cc15c9e0e0db\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"381\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><p>This would have grave implications for the equity market that ran in front of the disinflation narrative. While it is not incorrect to believe that there is a disinflationary narrative because inflation is slowing, the question is how long it will take to come down and sticky it will be in that process. said Michael Reynolds, vice president of investment strategy at Glenmede.</p><p>&#34;Investors may have had this false belief that this soft landing scenario was a higher probability event than it actually is.&#34;</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 613.89 points, or 1.81%, to 33,296.96 and the S&amp;P 500 lost 62.11 points, or 1.56%, to 3,928.86. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 138.10 points, or 1.24%, to 10,957.01.</p><p>Wednesday&#39;s decline was Nasdaq&#39;s first loss in eight sessions while the S&amp;P and the down both saw their biggest daily percentage declines since Dec. 15.</p><p>With Wall Street&#39;s major averages showing gains so far for 2023, Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA research, said some investors saw weak data as an opportunity to take profits.</p><p>&#34;The market was overbought. Today&#39;s economic data served as a trigger to initiate a profit taking spell and the groups with most profits to take have been the ones that have done best last year,&#34; said Stovall.</p><p>The weakest sectors on Wednesday were the defensive consumer staples, down 2.7%, and utilities, which fell 2.4%. In comparison, the best performers were more growth heavy sectors such as communications services, down 0.9%, and technology, down 1.3%.</p><p>Earlier in the day, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard and Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester stressed on the need to raise rates beyond 5% to bring inflation to heel.</p><p>And late in the afternoon, Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Patrick Harker said that he expects the Fed to raise rates a few more times this year although he reiterated earlier comments that he&#39;s ready for the U.S. central bank to move to a slower pace of rate hikes due to signs of cooling inflation.</p><p>The Fed commentary also highlighted the disparity between the U.S. central bank&#39;s estimate of its terminal rate and market expectations, which were of the rate peaking at 4.88% by June. Supply chain problems will resolve in time; China has shifted away from its zero COVID-19 policy; and consumer spending should rebound as inflation normalizes and interest rates fall. That means the long-term investment thesis is still intact. In other words, Tesla is well positioned to benefit from the secular shift toward autonomous vehicles and electric cars -- better than any other automaker in the near and long term, according to Baird analyst Ben Kallo.</p><p>Tesla has yet to report Q4 financial results, but its Q3 report was solid. Revenue climbed 56% to $21.5 billion; Tesla achieved an industry-leading operating margin of 17%; and free cash flow soared 148% to $3.3 billion.</p><p>Looking ahead, management says full self-driving (FSD) technology will eventually be the most important source of profitability. Tesla recently made its FSD beta software available to all North American customers, which should push operating margins even higher over time. The company also plans to achieve volume production of a robotaxi in 2024, which will move Tesla one step closer to its endgame: an autonomous ride-hailing platform.</p><p>Building on that, Tesla has logged data from more autonomous driving miles than any other automaker, and data is essential for training the artificial intelligence (AI) models that power self-driving cars. That advantage positions Tesla to be a leader in autonomous vehicles, a market Precedence Research says will grow at 39% annually to reach $1.8 trillion by 2030. Meanwhile, Transparency Market Research says the broader electric vehicle market will grow at 30% annually to reach $1.9 trillion by 2031.</p><p>In a nutshell, Tesla is set to benefit from two large and growing opportunities, which make its valuation of 5.1 times sales look relatively reasonable. Of course, that multiple is quite pricey compared to other automakers, but it is cheaper than Tesla&#39;s three-year average of 15.7 times sales. That&#39;s why risk-tolerant investors should buy a small position in this growth stock today.</p><h2>2. Microsoft has several big opportunities ahead of it</h2><p>Microsoft technology can be found at the core of most organizations. For instance, Microsoft 365 is the most popular enterprise application suite, and the Windows operating system is the gold standard for personal computers and data center servers. Microsoft has also carved out a strong market presence in areas like communications, business intelligence, and enterprise resource-planning software. Those tools will keep the company relevant for many years to come.</p><p>Not surprisingly, Microsoft&#39;s growth has slowed amid the difficult economic environment. In the most recent quarter, revenue increased just 11% to $50.1 billion, while earnings dropped 13% to $2.35 per diluted share. But growth should reaccelerate when the economy rebounds, and Microsoft has several exciting growth opportunities.</p><p>The first is cloud computing. Microsoft Azure accounted for 21% of cloud-infrastructure and platform-services spend in Q3, making it the second most popular cloud vendor. In fact, Microsoft has nearly twice as much market share as third place <b>Alphabet</b>. That puts the company in a good spot, as cloud spending will grow at 20% annually to reach $1.7 trillion by 2029, according to Fortune Business Insights.</p><p>The second exciting growth opportunity is digital advertising. It may surprise some investors to learn that Microsoft is currently the seventh largest digital ad company in the world, but platforms like LinkedIn and Bing Search have allowed the company to develop a foothold in that market. Better yet, Microsoft provides the ad tech that powers Netflix&#39;s ad-supported streaming service. That exclusive partnership should help Microsoft tap into the online video ad market, which is expected to grow at 14% annually to reach $362 billion by 2027. Meanwhile, Statista says the broader digital ad market will grow at 10% annually to surpass $1 trillion over the same time period.</p><p>The third exciting growth opportunity is cybersecurity. Analysts recognize Microsoft as a leader across several industry verticals, including security information and event management, unified endpoint management, and access management. And those accolades have come alongside strong growth. For instance, Microsoft increased its security customer count by 33% in the most recent quarter. More than 860,000 organizations now rely on its cybersecurity software. That puts Microsoft in a good spot. The cybersecurity market is expected to grow at 12% annually to surpass $500 billion by 2030, according to Grand View Research.</p><p>With that in mind, shares of Microsoft currently trade at 25 times earnings. That is not cheap in a traditional sense, but it is reasonable in the context of Microsoft&#39;s growth opportunities, and it is a discount compared to the three-year average of 32.1 times earnings. Between supply chain disruptions, temporary closures of Gigafactory Shanghai, and softening consumer demand, the company missed Wall Street's delivery estimates in the third and fourth quarters. Tesla also missed its own forecast of 50% average annual growth \"over a multi-year horizon,\" as deliveries grew just 40% to 1.3 million in 2022.Fortunately, those headwinds are temporary. Supply chain problems will resolve in time; China has shifted away from its zero COVID-19 policy; and consumer spending should rebound as inflation normalizes and interest rates fall.
