Its 30-day trading volume average is just above 100 million shares, according to FactSet.With 450 million shares outstanding, the entire company changed hands nearly 1.5 times during Friday’s trading.The so-called short covering could be contributing to AMC’s massive rally this week. That was the highest reading since the survey was expanded to cover all manufacturing industries in October 2009, and followed a final reading of 60.5 in April.</p>\n<p>Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the index dipping to 60.2 in early May. A reading above 50 indicates growth in manufacturing, which accounts for 11.9% of the U.S. economy.</p>\n<p>Demand shifted to goods from services as the COVID-19 pandemic kept Americans at home, causing supply constraints. The virus also disrupted labor at manufacturers and their suppliers, leading to raw material shortages across industries.</p>\n<p>More than a third of the population has been vaccinated, allowing the broader economy to reopen. While that, together with nearly $6 trillion in pandemic relief provided by the government over the past year, is unleashing pent-up demand for services, appetite for goods remains healthy.</p>\n<p>According to IHS Markit “manufacturers highlighted that strain on capacity and raw material shortages are expected to last through 2021.” It noted that the supply crunch was raising production costs for manufacturers, who “made efforts to pass higher cost burdens on to clients.”</p>\n<p>The IHS Markit survey’s measure of prices paid by manufacturers rose to the highest level since July 2008.</p>\n<p>Federal Reserve officials generally view the supply chain bottlenecks as transitory and expect them to temporarily drive inflation above the U.S. central bank’s 2% target. There is also acknowledgment that the bottlenecks could take longer to ease.</p>\n<p>Minutes of the Fed’s April 27-28 policy meeting published on Wednesday showed “a number of participants remarked that supply chain bottlenecks and input shortages may not be resolved quickly,” and that this “could put upward pressure on prices beyond this year. These officials also “noted that in some industries, supply chain disruptions appeared to be more persistent than originally anticipated.”</p>\n<p>The raw material squeeze is most evident in the automobile and electronics industries, where a global semiconductor shortage has forced production cuts.</p>\n<p>According to IHS Market, backlogs of work accumulated early this month at the fastest pace in 14 years.</p>\n<p>The survey said its measure of new orders increased and that though factories tried to recruit more workers, the pace of hiring was the slowest in five months.</p>\n<p>Booming demand also boosted the services sector, which bore the brunt of the pandemic. The IHS Markit’s flash services sector PMI surged to 70.1, the highest since the series started in October 2009, from a final reading of 64.7 in April.</p>\n<p>The services sector accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.</p>\n<p>The strength in manufacturing and the services industries lifted overall business activity. That was the highest reading since the survey was expanded to cover all manufacturing industries in October 2009, and followed a final reading of 60.5 in April.</p>\n<p>Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the index dipping to 60.2 in early May. A reading above 50 indicates growth in manufacturing, which accounts for 11.9% of the U.S. economy.</p>\n<p>Demand shifted to goods from services as the COVID-19 pandemic kept Americans at home, causing supply constraints. The virus also disrupted labor at manufacturers and their suppliers, leading to raw material shortages across industries.</p>\n<p>More than a third of the population has been vaccinated, allowing the broader economy to reopen. Moreover, its gross merchandise volume (GMV) was down&nbsp;by a considerable 19%&nbsp;for the full year. The trend has followed in its first-quarter results this year, where its&nbsp;GMV was down 13%&nbsp;and its sales dropped 6% on a year-over-year basis.</p>\n<p>The drop in revenues is linked to its transition in its business model, which I discussed earlier. However, an area where it is excelling is its gross margins.</p>\n<p>Gross margins rose by 22.3%&nbsp;last year compared to 2019, reaching positive territory after fulfillment expenses. Moreover, the trend followed in the first quarter this year, where&nbsp;gross profits reached €6.2 million, more than doubling year-over-year.</p>\n<p>The number of active users on its platform continues to rise at a healthy rate,experiencing a 12% growth&nbsp;in the past year compared to 2019.</p>\n<p>Additionally, the order volume on its platform increased by 5.1% in 2020 compared to 2019. It also increased by 3.3% in the first quarter this year; therefore, it appears that the company is slowly building towards a recovery in its top line.</p>\n<p><b>Market Opportunity</b></p>\n<p>Jumia operates in the fast-growing African market, which has the potential of becoming global growth’s new frontier.</p>\n<p>The company operates in 11 countries with 600 million people, which accounts for roughly 70% of Africa’s internet users.</p>\n<p>McKinsey estimates that the African eCommerce industry will account for&nbsp;approximately 10% of the continent’s retail sales&nbsp;by 2025, whichtotals $75 billion&nbsp;in revenues annually.</p>\n<p>Hence, it is clear that Jumia has penetrated a small portion of the market so far, and even if it ends up a fraction of its TAM, it could rapidly expand its market capitalization.</p>\n<p>In this regard, JMIA stock is fairly priced despite the weakness in its fundamentals. Though that is true for now, the market is ignoring the business’ positioning and its incredible long-term potential.\nJumia is a company in transition. It has shifted its business model towards third-party marketplace sales, which has heavily impacted its near-term growth. Moreover, it aims to be less reliant on one-off sales such as in electronics towards higher-frequency product categories such as clothing, food, and others.\nAdditionally, higher-order frequency items will positively impact the penetration of its fintech offering called JumiaPay. It has also implemented several cost control measures and exited less profitable markets such as Cameroon.\nThis being said, let’s look at Jumia in a little more depth and assess whether it’s a good investment now at this time.\nA Look at JMIA’s Financials\nIt’s safe to that Jumia’s fundamentals aren’t impressive for its massive total addressable market and its meteoric valuation.\nRevenues in the past year declined by 12.9% though marketplace revenues grew by 19.6%. Moreover, its gross merchandise volume (GMV) was down by a considerable 19% for the full year. The trend has followed in its first-quarter results this year, where its GMV was down 13% and its sales dropped 6% on a year-over-year basis.\nThe drop in revenues is linked to its transition in its business model, which I discussed earlier. However, an area where it is excelling is its gross margins.\nGross margins rose by 22.3% last year compared to 2019, reaching positive territory after fulfillment expenses. Moreover, the trend followed in the first quarter this year, where gross profits reached €6.2 million, more than doubling year-over-year.\nThe number of active users on its platform continues to rise at a healthy rate,experiencing a 12% growth in the past year compared to 2019.\nAdditionally, the order volume on its platform increased by 5.1% in 2020 compared to 2019.
