Holdings Inc., ","content":"
(Bloomberg) -- After weeks of profiting from the stock and debt of AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., hedge fund Mudrick Capital Management ended up with a 5.4% loss after a derivatives bet went haywire.
\n
The fund, which specializes in distressed debt, suffered the losses on AMC after day traders pushed the movie theater’s shares up as much as 127% on a single day, derailing call options Mudrick had sold on AMC shares to hedge exposure to the company, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported on the losses.
\n
Up until the improbable surge in AMC’s shares, the firm founded by Jason Mudrick had been among the big winners on AMC securities after the hedge fund agreed to help keep the cinema chain afloat last year by committing to buy new debt issued by the company. That and other AMC positions helped the fund reap almost $200 million in gains in January, Bloomberg News previously reported. Then the firm bought about $230 million of new shares from the company in a deal announced June 1, shares it quickly flipped to day traders and other AMC enthusiasts for another profit.
\n
But that’s when things started to unravel.
\n
To protect the firm’s holdings from a market plunge, Mudrick sold call options that gave other investors the right to buy shares from him at pre-set levels -- most of which were at $40 or more -- well above any price at which the shares had ever traded.
\n
As AMC’s stock surged June 2 in its Reddit-fueled frenzy, the price suddenly blasted past the prices at which the fund’s counterparties could cash in on the call options, the person said. The hedges ended up losing 10%, causing the net loss of 5.4%.
\n
A representative for Mudrick declined to comment.
\n
Shedding Risk
\n
Mudrick no longer has exposure to AMC after unwinding all of its debt, stock and derivatives bets. The firm is still up between 12% and 14% for the year, the person said.
\n
A risk committee for Mudrick Capital met virtually on the night of June 1 and decided to exit all debt and derivative positions the following day, the person said. Mudrick sold about a third of its exposure before the stock surged even further on June 2 and was fully out by that afternoon. The firm sold its 15% first-lien bonds in the theater chain for 121 cents on the dollar, the person added.
\n
But the trade’s unwind didn’t come soon enough. AMC shares surged past $40 to reach as high as $72.62, blowing up the firm’s short position and effectively unraveling what had looked like a winning bet.
\n
AMC shares have soared more than 2,200% this year, and debt holders have also benefited from the rally. The company’s bonds due 2026 that were trading as low as 5 cents on the dollar in November now change hands above face value, according to Trace.
\n
While ultimately handing Mudrick a loss, the meme stock frenzy helped AMC earn a credit upgrade from S&P Global Ratings after the company was able to raise hundreds of millions of dollars from share sales.
\n
Mudrick’s flagship fund rose about 12% in 2020, making much of its money in the fourth quarter of last year, Bloomberg previously reported. The firm manages around $3.5 billion.
","source":"yahoofinance","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Mudrick’s AMC Bet Backfires After Meme Frenzy Wrecks Hedges
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nMudrick’s AMC Bet Backfires After Meme Frenzy Wrecks Hedges\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-12 06:19 GMT+8 Bloomberg\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
(Bloomberg) -- After weeks of profiting from the stock and debt of AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., hedge fund Mudrick Capital Management ended up with a 5.4% loss after a derivatives bet went haywire...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AMC":"AMC院线"},"source_url":"https://finance.yahoo.com/news/mudrick-amc-bet-backfires-meme-221912972.html","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5f26f4a48f9cb3e29be4d71d3ba8c038","article_id":"2142202756","content_text":"(Bloomberg) -- After weeks of profiting from the stock and debt of AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., hedge fund Mudrick Capital Management ended up with a 5.4% loss after a derivatives bet went haywire.\nThe fund, which specializes in distressed debt, suffered the losses on AMC after day traders pushed the movie theater’s shares up as much as 127% on a single day, derailing call options Mudrick had sold on AMC shares to hedge exposure to the company, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. While it may be tempting, it is too soon to add Federal Reserve policymakers to that list.
\n
Much will be made next week out of some potentially \"hawkish\" sounds from the U.S. central bank's policy meeting, economists said, while they stressed that Fed Chairman Jerome Powell and the majority of the voting members of the interest rate setting committee remain \"doves\" and fundamentally will be sticking to their \"patient\" stance on monetary policy.
\n
\"They are going to be a little bit less dovish than last time,\" said Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. macro strategist for TD Securities.
\n
U.S. inflation has been sizzling in recent months.
\n
But the recent decline in long-term Treasury yields allows the Fed to lean into the hawkish message, O'Sullivan said.
\n
While inflation has been surprisingly hot, the Fed \"is willing to wait\" until the fall to see how the labor market responds to the inflation spike, said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics. Wage pressures play a key role in determining the inflation outlook.
\n
\"We don't know how many people will come back into the labor market, how participation will rise, and will it be enough to dampen inflationary pressures,\" Shepherdson said.
\n
\"In the olden days, the Fed would have raised interest rates first and worried about what was going to happen afterwards. But this is a different Fed with a different strategy and a different approach,\" he said.
\n
The Fed is buying $80 billion of Treasurys and $40 billion of mortgage backed securities each month, along with keeping its benchmark interest rate close to zero, to support the economy.
\n
The central bank put itself in a bit of a box in December by guiding markets that it wouldn't slow down the pace of purchases until there had been \"substantial further progress\" in its goals of full employment and stable inflation.
\n
What will be the hawkish sounds?
\n
First, the Fed will give in to the reality that talking about tapering the size of its asset purchases makes sense. This is an important shift. Since December, Powell has managed to hold off such talk.
\n
But this is only the most preliminary of steps.
\n
Instead \"officials will talk in general straw-poll terms on what principles ought to apply,\" said Lou Crandall, chief economist at Wrightson ICAP.
\n
It won't be the Fed having a structured debate on a set of options game-planned by the staff. That might happen in July, but not now.
\n
To downplay the significance, the Fed won't say anything about the \"talks about tapering\" in its formal statement, next Wednesday afternoon, O'Sullivan said.
\n
Secondly, the Fed's dot-plot, or interest rate forecast chart, may show a shift forward for the first rate hike to come during 2023. At the moment, the Fed shows no rate hikes until 2024 at the earliest.
\n
At its March meeting, seven out of 18 Fed officials saw a hike before the end of 2023, and it could be nine or ten officials at the June meeting next week.
\n
Thirdly, the Fed will have to raise its forecast for inflation for this year. That compares to $554 million forthe January 2021 fiscal year.
\n
Snowflake (ticker: SNOW) should still be growing 30% at the top-line at that point, according to chief financial officer Mike Scarpelli, while generating 10% operating margins and free cash flow margins of 15% or better. He also said the company now sees a total addressable market of $90 billion, an expansion of more than 10% from the $81 billion estimated market size cited during its IPO roadshow in 2020.
\n
The long-term growth goals help frame the huge opportunity that Snowflake has ahead, but did nothing to change the fundamental debate about the stock: Does the impressive growth rate—120% in product revenue in the latest year— justify the massive valuation? I learned a long time ago that you never short a dull market,” the “Mad Money” host said.\n“I want you to find relatively inexpensive stocks of good companies and then you can buy them on the cheap because of this genuine Wall Street gibberish that drives down some stocks unfairly,” he said.\n\nAfter stocks muscled their way slightly higher on Friday, CNBC’s Jim Cramer advised investors not to underestimate a market that’s putting up small gains.\nTheS&P 500crawled 0.19% higher to 4,247.44, a record close.\n“Some would say it’s the calm before the storm ... I learned a long time ago that you never short a dull market,” the “Mad Money” host said. “It’s good news that we’re being lulled to record highs and the market keeps shrugging off negatives, including yesterday’s scorching hot inflation numbers.”\nElsewhere, theDow Jones Industrial Indexinched up 0.04% to 34,479.60. TheNasdaq Compositeincreased 0.35% to settle at 14,069.42.\nIn the week ahead, Wall Street will turn its attentions to producer price index data on Tuesday and a readout from the Federal Reserve’s meeting on Wednesday. The producer price index, which measures how much companies pay producers for goods, could also be hot, Cramer said.\nEither way, investors may be able to find opportunities in the market, he said.\n“I want you to find relatively inexpensive stocks of good companies, and then you can buy them on the cheap because of this genuine Wall Street gibberish that drives down some stocks unfairly,” he said. “Whether they’re value or growth names makes no difference to me or to Cramerica.”\nCramer gave viewers a preview of the upcoming corporate earnings reports he has circled on his calendar. Projections for revenue and earnings per share are based on FactSet estimates:\nTuesday: Oracle\nOracle\n\nQ4 2021 earnings release: after market; conference call: 5 p.m.\nProjected EPS: $1.31\nProjected revenue: $11.02 billion\n\n“This boring, old-school enterprise software company has seen its stock surge 28% year-to-date, thanks to a remarkable acceleration in its core businesses,” Cramer said. “I bet it reports a fine quarter.”\nWednesday: Lennar\nLennar\n\nQ2 2021 earnings release: after market; conference call: Thursday, 10:30 a.m.\nProjected EPS: $2.37\nProjected revenue: $6.10 billion\n\n“Stuart Miller, the former CEO and current executive chairman, likes to give you the state of the state on housing on that conference call,” he said. “We know there’s been an immense amount of inflation in the raw materials that go into a house, although lumber’s come down. But the final cost barely creeps up and that’s thanks to the ingenuity of these excellent builders.”\nThursday: Kroger, Jabil, Adobe\nKroger\n\nQ1 2021 earnings release: before market; conference call: 10 a.m.\nProjected EPS: 98 cents\nProjected revenue: $39.56 billion\n\n“Kroger’s stock has become a standout performer, and that’s because it’s a major beneficiary from inflation,” Cramer said. “I actually do expect a terrific number from Kroger, not many people are thinking that.”\nJabil\n\nQ3 2021 earnings release: before market; conference call: 8:30 a.m.\nProjected EPS: $1.04\nProjected revenue: $6.95 billion\n\n“Jabil does a lot of business with Apple, and Wall Street loves playing silly guessing games by trying to extrapolate from Jabil’s results to Apple’s,” he said. “I wish they’d just focus on Jabil itself, which has been an amazing stock, up 36% for the year. Another unsung stock of an unsung company in an unsung bull market.”\nAdobe\n\nQ2 2021 earnings release: after market; conference call: 5 p.m.\nProjected EPS: $2.81\nProjected revenue: $3.73 billion\n\n“Lately [this] stock’s been meandering and that has usually been the best time to buy it,” the host said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":175,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":186088532,"gmtCreate":1623465296526,"gmtModify":1704204380167,"author":{"id":"3569495193201846","authorId":"3569495193201846","name":"Daren13","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3569495193201846","authorIdStr":"3569495193201846"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","listText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","text":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/186088532","repostId":"2142204074","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2142204074","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1623441637,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2142204074?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-12 04:00","market":"us","language":"en","title":"S&P ekes out gains to close languid week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2142204074","media":"Reuters","summary":"NEW YORK, June 11 - The S&P 500 closed nominally higher at the end of a torpid week marked with few market-moving catalysts and persistent concerns over whether current inflation spikes could linger and cause the U.S. Federal Reserve to tighten its dovish policy sooner than expected.Economically sensitive smallcaps and transports notched solid gains, outperforming the broader market. For the week, the S&P and the Nasdaq advanced from last Friday's close, while the Dow posted a weekly loss. But th","content":"
NEW YORK, June 11 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 closed nominally higher at the end of a torpid week marked with few market-moving catalysts and persistent concerns over whether current inflation spikes could linger and cause the U.S. Federal Reserve to tighten its dovish policy sooner than expected.
\n
Economically sensitive smallcaps and transports notched solid gains, outperforming the broader market.
\n
For the week, the S&P and the Nasdaq advanced from last Friday's close, while the Dow posted a weekly loss.
\n
But the indexes have been range-bound, with few catalysts to move investor sentiment.
Invesco became the latest on Wednesday, announcing a pair of funds packed with crypto-linked equities.
\n
It’s the only way U.S. firms can cash in on the unrelenting clamor for digital coins, and it may stay that way for a while. The SEC has already delayed its decision to approve or deny a Bitcoin ETF once this year and is expected to punt again at its next deadline on June 17.
\n
“There’s clearly strong demand from investors for exposure to the price of Bitcoin, and ETF issuers are simply looking to meet that demand,” said Nate Geraci, president of the ETF Store, an advisory firm. “The SEC is essentially forcing ETF issuers into the laboratory to create these Frankenstein products.”
\n
The Frankenfunds’ creators are being rewarded for their efforts. For instance, the Bitwise Crypto Industry Innovators ETF (ticker BITQ) has already drawn about $45 million in assets less than a month after its launch. That fund holds crypto-heavy companies like MicroStrategy Inc., Coinbase Global Inc., and Galaxy Digital Holdings Ltd.
\n
Then there’s a slate of older products finding new life amid the coin craze. The Amplify Transformational Data Sharing ETF (BLOK), an actively-managed fund with stocks like MicroStrategy and PayPal Holdings Inc., attracted more than $711 million this year already, as its price has risen 30%. A peer fund called the First Trust Indxx Innovative Transaction & Process ETF (LEGR), which invests in companies using or developing blockchain technology, is on pace for its best year of inflows yet.
\n
“There is a high demand for a Bitcoin product that has all the features that people love about ETFs -- that they trade on an exchange, that they’re liquid,” said Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst at Robert W. Baird & Co.
\n
Biggest Player Yet
\n
Invesco is the largest fund manager yet to try the workaround tactic, with its Invesco Galaxy Blockchain Economy ETF and Invesco Galaxy Crypto Economy ETF, each holding about 85% of their assets in crypto-linked equities and the rest in trusts and funds that hold cryptocurrencies.
\n
Two days before the Invesco filing, there was an application for the Volt Bitcoin Revolution ETF, which would include companies with Bitcoin exposure. At least 80% of its assets will be in firms that either have Bitcoin on their balance sheet or are developing or using products within the crypto ecosystem, as well as options on those firms and ETFs that have exposure to them.
\n
More funds tracking the crypto industry -- instead of actual Bitcoin -- may debut in the coming months, as the SEC continues to voice concerns about the market. Recently, SEC Chairman Gary Gensler said the crypto sector could benefit from greater investor protection and has urged Congress to give the regulatory agency authority over trading venues.
\n
“My optimism on Bitcoin ETF approval has waned recently,” ETF Store’s Geraci said. “It’s hard to view Gensler’s comments on the current state of the Bitcoin and crypto ecosystem and feel optimistic about the prospects of a Bitcoin ETF anytime soon.”
\n
Even after a true Bitcoin ETF finally launches in U.S. markets, these crypto-flavored funds could still have appeal, especially in a world obsessed with all things involving blockchain and digital tokens.
\n
“These Bitcoin-adjacent vehicles make sense for people who don’t want to deal with all the volatility of Bitcoin but want exposure,” said Amrita Nandakumar, president of Vident Investment Advisory. “It’s a solution that has popped up in response to the pent-up demand.”
","source":"yahoofinance","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Through direct indexing, financial advisers can create a basket of individual stocks designed to hew closely to an established index such as the S&P 500 SPX (#phrase-company?ref=COMPANY%7CSPX;onlineSignificance=passing-mention).\nIn addition to accommodating clients who want to align their investments with their personal values, there are two other reasons that advisers may offer direct indexing. First, high-net-worth individuals may worry about the tax hit if they sell appreciated stocks. The portfolio optimizer technology that advisers use for direct indexing offers guidance on harvesting tax losses to offset capital gains.\n\"We've had clients who have inherited a portfolio with stocks that produce huge long-term gains,\" said Ken Nuttall, a certified financial planner in West Grove, Pa. \"Direct indexing can help with tax management of inherited assets.\"\nDirect indexing also appeals to clients who have loaded up on their company's stock. Eager to diversify their holdings, they do not want to own other stocks in their industry. So they ask their adviser to track an index like the S&P 500 but without stocks from their employer's sector.\nOne downside is that the custom portfolio becomes too independent. \"There is a risk the direct indexing portfolio will deviate from the [benchmark] index,\" said Noah Damsky, a Los Angeles-based adviser. \"The client may be looking to create a tracking error to the upside. But it can lead to a tracking error on the downside.\"\nFor many investors, the benefits outweigh that risk. So as long as advisers purchase software that swaps out stocks to advance a client's goals, tailoring portfolios can gain traction.\n\"You'll see more growth in direct indexing in the next year or two,\" Nuttall said. \"Advisers are using it more and appreciating it more.\" The potential for a capital-gains tax increase in the near future adds to the allure of direct indexing.
