But some investors have pulled the plug on the company lately.
\n
Tesla (TSLA) shares are nearly 25% below their all-time high set earlier in the year, and down 2% for 2021 to date -— a time when traditional automakers are surging as they ramp up electric vehicle ambitions.
\n
Ford (F) stock is up nearly 75%, putting it in the top 10 of the S&P 500 in 2021. The company unveiled its electric F-150 Lightning truck last month and also told investors that it now expects electric vehicles to account for 40% of global sales by 2030.
\n
And GM (GM) is up more than 40% as well. The Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac maker said this month that it's looking to spend a whopping $35 billion on EVs by 2025.
\n
It seems investors are a bit infatuated with these legacy Big 3 automakers as they look to rapidly expand their electric car offerings to catch up with Tesla.
\n
Tesla is still growing incredibly quickly. Analysts expect earnings per share to more than double this year and increase at an average rate of about 45% annually over the next few years.
\n
Yet Tesla is one of the most polarizing stocks on Wall Street.
\n
According to Refinitiv, 14 analysts have the stock rated a \"buy,\" 13 a \"hold\" and 10 a \"sell.\" Contrast that with GM, which has 20 buy ratings, two holds and no sells.
\n
Skeptics have many questions about Tesla and Musk
\n
The consensus target price for Tesla stock from analysts is $652, about 6% lower than its current price.
\n
Tesla critics have a pile of worries to point to. A notable short seller who was featured in \"The Big Short\" is betting against the company. Concerns about Tesla's management bench sprung up after longtime executive Jerome Guillen abruptly left earlier this month — especially since CEO Elon Musk is also busy running SpaceX.
\n
And Musk's obsession with bitcoin and dogecoin, along with other extracurricular activities like hosting Saturday Night Live and constantly tweeting, might be a turnoff for some investors and analysts.
\n
Still, there is no denying that the company has plenty of ardent fans, and its vehicles have grabbed plenty of positive headlines this week alone.
\n
For example, Cars.com (CARS) announced earlier this week that Tesla's Model 3 was ranked first in its American-Made Index, which measures how much a vehicle contributes to the US economy based on factors such as domestic factory jobs, manufacturing plants and parts sourcing.
\n
The Model 3 edged out Ford's Mustang for the top spot, and Tesla's Model Y also ranked third on the list. Shares of Tesla rallied more than 5% Wednesday following the news.
\n
The stock gained even more ground Thursday after Musk tweeted the night before that Tesla investors might get preferential treatment to buy shares of SpaceX-owned Starlink if SpaceX eventually decides to spin off the satellite internet service in a few years.
\n
So even though Tesla's stock is still in the red this year, shares have quickly clawed back much of their 2021 losses after a more than 12% surge in the past five days.
\n
Tesla is nothing if not volatile.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Tesla stock is getting left in Ford's and GM's dust
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Tesla stock is getting left in Ford's and GM's dust\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-25 17:08 GMT+8 cnn\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
New York (CNN Business)Tesla had a stellar 2020: The electric car maker was added to the S&P 500 and the stock surged an electrifying 743%. Shares of Tesla rallied more than 5% Wednesday following the news.\nThe stock gained even more ground Thursday after Musk tweeted the night before that Tesla investors might get preferential treatment to buy shares of SpaceX-owned Starlink if SpaceX eventually decides to spin off the satellite internet service in a few years.\nSo even though Tesla's stock is still in the red this year, shares have quickly clawed back much of their 2021 losses after a more than 12% surge in the past five days.\nTesla is nothing if not volatile.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":276,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":161235632,"gmtCreate":1623927978226,"gmtModify":1703823702600,"author":{"id":"3569537075482866","authorId":"3569537075482866","name":"Samuel20488","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e903f64b9f45b0849b62eb88e7354e6f","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3569537075482866","authorIdStr":"3569537075482866"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I stop reading fool articles","listText":"I stop reading fool articles","text":"I stop reading fool articles","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/161235632","repostId":"2143979397","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2143979397","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1623921600,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2143979397?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-17 17:20","market":"us","language":"en","title":"1 Stock to Avoid No Matter What","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2143979397","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"This company faces an uphill climb to turning things around.","content":"
GameStop (NYSE:GME) has certainly had a wild ride this year. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures also traded in negative territory.

Shares of ViacomCBS and Discovery both rebounded after coming underintense selling pressurelast week. The two companies were believed to be hit by forced liquidation of positions held by the multibillion dollar family office Archegos Capital Management, a source familiar with the situation told CNBC.

Discovery gained more than 4% in premarket trading Monday while ViacomCBS rose more than 2%. The two companies had lost 27% apiece during Friday’s selloff.

Elsewhere, Boeing was up 2.6% premarket on news that Southwest Airlines had added 100 orders for the airliner’s 737 Max jet. Sales slowed for the trio of Chinese EV startups vs. March's pace, asTesla(TSLA) ramps up competition.Nio stock reversed slightly Monday, while Xpeng and Li Auto also fell.Year over year, Nio's April sales jumped 125% to 5,147 electric vehicles. That included 1,523 seven-seater ES8 SUVs, 3,163 five-seater ES6 SUVs, and 2,416 EC6 electric crossovers.Sales growth slowed from the 373% pace that Nio saw in March. But Nio's April EV sales defied the chip shortage that forced the emerging Tesla of China to temporarily suspend factory production for five days starting March 29.Year over year, Xpeng Motors saw April sales surge 285% to 5,147 electric vehicles. That included 2,995 P7 sedans and 2,152 G3 compact SUVs.However, growth slowed from March's 384% pace.Year over year, Li Auto's April sales increased 111% to 5,539 hybrid-electric SUVs. Sales growth slowed from March's 239% pace.Li Auto reached a milestone 500,000th delivery faster than any of its peers, the Chinese EV startup said in a statement.Month to month, Nio sales fell 2.1%. Li Auto sales climbed 13% vs. the prior month.Nio Stock, Xpeng StockShares of Nio fell 0.75% to 39.54 on thestock market Monday after hitting 41.45 intraday. Li Auto lost 1.5%.All three EV stocks remain in a severe bear market on a multitude of factors, including rising competition in China. Tesla, which dominates the Chinese market for luxury EVs, began selling a locally made Model Y SUV this year.Tesla stock slumped 3.5% amid a report that the key Berlin plant won't start production until 2022. Shares closed just above their declining 50-day line. TSLA stock rebounded above the 50-day line on Friday, after tumbling more than 8% in the three days after the EV maker's earnings.China EV Competition Heats UpAfter booming sales in 2020, Nio and Xpeng face tougher competition ahead. It's the world's most-watched area right now. Why? Because companies that can help end the pandemic with a vaccine or drug are heading for big rewards. For example, Moderna and Pfizer -- makers of the first commercialized vaccines -- expect to make billions of dollars on them this year.
\n
Moderna and Pfizer have plenty of share-price growth potential. But if you're looking for a possible 10-bagger, you might be better off checking out companies that aren't yet on everyone's radar screens. Let's take a look at two exciting players working on coronavirus treatments -- and see if they have what it takes to become tomorrow's stock-market winners.
\n
\n
Humanigen
\n
Humanigen (NASDAQ:HGEN) shares soared more than 54% in one trading session after the company reported positive results from its investigational monoclonal antibody treatment for hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Lenzilumab. paired with other treatments, improved patients' \"relative likelihood of survival without need for invasive mechanical ventilation\" by 54%. Treatments used in the study included steroids and Gilead Sciences' Veklury (remdesivir).
\n
Lenzilumab acts on \"cytokine storms,\" which are overreactions of the body's immune system. In a cytokine storm, the body doesn't just fight off a virus -- it also attacks its own cells. Halting or preventing a cytokine storm is key to keeping many patients off ventilators.
\n
Humanigen says it's now preparing to request Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). If authorized, lenzilumab would be the first antibody treatment authorized for hospitalized patients. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized three antibody treatments so far -- but they are all for use in non-hospitalized patients. And the FDA hasn't yet authorized a treatment for coronavirus-related cytokine storm, so that would be another first.
\n
Humanigen's specialty is addressing cytokine storms. And, beyond COVID-19, its lead candidate lenzilumab is involved in four other clinical trials -- each in phase 2. The company also has launched a phase 1 trial for another candidate in solid tumors.
\n
Redhill Biopharma
\n
Redhill Biopharma (NASDAQ:RDHL) shares haven't yet benefited from the company's clinical trial success; the stock is down about 16% year to date. But there's no reason to be pessimistic about Redhill. In December, the company announced positive safety and efficacy data from its phase 2 trial of opaganib in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. More than 52% of opaganib patients no longer required oxygen support by the 14th day of treatment; that's compared to only about 22% of the control group.
\n
Here's how opaganib stands out: The oral drug candidate targets a part of human cells that plays a role in viral replication -- instead of targeting the virus itself. And that means variants of concern may not affect its efficacy. Another plus: Opaganib has shown antiviral and anti-inflammatory activity.
\n
In February, Redhill said it planned to expand its global phase 2/3 trial of opaganib for severe COVID-19 to the U.S. That study is now more than 75% enrolled, the company said this past week. It's the world's most-watched area right now. Why? Because companies that can help end the pandemic with a vaccine or drug are heading for big rewards. For example, Moderna and Pfizer -- makers of the first commercialized vaccines -- expect to make billions of dollars on them this year.\nModerna and Pfizer have plenty of share-price growth potential. But if you're looking for a possible 10-bagger, you might be better off checking out companies that aren't yet on everyone's radar screens. Let's take a look at two exciting players working on coronavirus treatments -- and see if they have what it takes to become tomorrow's stock-market winners.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nHumanigen\nHumanigen (NASDAQ:HGEN) shares soared more than 54% in one trading session after the company reported positive results from its investigational monoclonal antibody treatment for hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Lenzilumab. paired with other treatments, improved patients' \"relative likelihood of survival without need for invasive mechanical ventilation\" by 54%. Treatments used in the study included steroids and Gilead Sciences' Veklury (remdesivir).\nLenzilumab acts on \"cytokine storms,\" which are overreactions of the body's immune system. In a cytokine storm, the body doesn't just fight off a virus -- it also attacks its own cells. Halting or preventing a cytokine storm is key to keeping many patients off ventilators.\nHumanigen says it's now preparing to request Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). If authorized, lenzilumab would be the first antibody treatment authorized for hospitalized patients. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized three antibody treatments so far -- but they are all for use in non-hospitalized patients. And the FDA hasn't yet authorized a treatment for coronavirus-related cytokine storm, so that would be another first.\nHumanigen's specialty is addressing cytokine storms. And, beyond COVID-19, its lead candidate lenzilumab is involved in four other clinical trials -- each in phase 2. The company also has launched a phase 1 trial for another candidate in solid tumors.\nRedhill Biopharma\nRedhill Biopharma (NASDAQ:RDHL) shares haven't yet benefited from the company's clinical trial success; the stock is down about 16% year to date. But there's no reason to be pessimistic about Redhill. In December, the company announced positive safety and efficacy data from its phase 2 trial of opaganib in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. More than 52% of opaganib patients no longer required oxygen support by the 14th day of treatment; that's compared to only about 22% of the control group.\nHere's how opaganib stands out: The oral drug candidate targets a part of human cells that plays a role in viral replication -- instead of targeting the virus itself. And that means variants of concern may not affect its efficacy. Another plus: Opaganib has shown antiviral and anti-inflammatory activity.\nIn February, Redhill said it planned to expand its global phase 2/3 trial of opaganib for severe COVID-19 to the U.S. That study is now more than 75% enrolled, the company said this past week. It expects to report results in the second quarter.\nRedhill has another candidate in a phase 2/3 trial for COVID-19. And beyond the coronavirus program, the company has six candidates in the pipeline for gastrointestinal indications and oncology. Redhill has three gastrointestinal products on the market; it launched two of them last year.\nThe next 10-baggers?\nWall Street is optimistic about both companies. If analysts are right, Humanigen and Redhill could climb 100% and 200%, respectively, within 12 months. The two companies have coronavirus candidates that look compelling so far. More positive data and/or EUAs clearly would be reason for a big share-price increase for either company. And such a gain could easily exceed analysts' price forecasts.\nSo far, the FDA only has authorized 10 treatments for COVID-19. There's more than enough room for others. If a drug can cover a broad enough patient group, it could bring in billions. For instance, Veklury generated $1.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020.\nBut here's what could hold back Humanigen and Redhill from massive share gains: So far, investors have preferred the vaccine race to the treatment one. For example, over the past year, vaccine stocks Novavax and Moderna have outperformed treatment makers Gilead Sciences and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals:\nGILD data by YCharts.\nThat trend may reverse -- especially as more and more people are vaccinated and vaccines show efficacy in the real world. With the vaccine problem \"solved,\" investors might want to bet more heavily on the treatment space. If this happens and if Humanigen and Redhill bring treatments to market, they may become 10-baggers.
