Since then, most companies operating in this fast-growing sector have declined substantially in 2022. That said, while it may appear to some investors that this is a sector worth considering as it may have bottomed out, plenty of names in this space still belong in the “EV stocks to sell” category.</p><p>Indeed, despite what many have called a bubble in the EV sector seemingly popping, scores of publicly-traded electric vehicle stocks continue to trade at extremely high valuations. Along with rich valuations, these vehicle electrification plays are also facing deteriorating fundamentals.</p><p>Growth is falling short of expectations, milestones aren’t being met, and the hope and hype that sent this sector to “the moon” during the pandemic era continues to dissipate.</p><p>Thus, investors shouldn’t get taken for a ride with these overpriced EV stocks to sell. With weakening fundamentals, there’s more room for most of these stocks to fall. Thus, I think investors want to hit the brakes with these EV companies right now.</p><table border=\"1\"><tbody><tr><td><b>CHPT</b></td><td>ChargePoint</td><td>$11.06</td></tr><tr><td><b>GOEV</b></td><td>Canoo</td><td>$1.35</td></tr><tr><td><b>HYZN</b></td><td>Hyzon Motors</td><td>$1.62</td></tr><tr><td><b>LCID</b></td><td>Lucid Group</td><td>$8.37</td></tr><tr><td><b>NIO</b></td><td>Nio</td><td>$12.98</td></tr><tr><td><b>QS</b></td><td>QuantumScape</td><td>$7.04</td></tr><tr><td><b>TSLA</b></td><td>Tesla</td><td>$180.49</td></tr></tbody></table><h2>ChargePoint (CHPT)</h2><p>There was a lot of buzz surrounding EV charging solutions provider <b>ChargePoint</b> (NYSE:<b>CHPT</b>) in the lead up to its debut in the public markets via a special purpose acquisition company (or SPAC) merger in February 2021.</p><p>In fact, even before the SPAC merger closed, shares in CHPT’s “blank-check” predecessor, <b>Switchback Energy</b>, surged to levels that were nearly five-times higher than its original SPAC price ($10 per share). Since then, however, CHPT stock has all but fallen back to this initial SPAC price, changing hands today for around $11 per share.</p><p>Still, I wouldn’t assume that the $10 level is any sort of floor for ChargePoint. Although the company reported 93% revenue growth last quarter, it remains far away from reaching profitability any time soon. Expected to burn through half of its cash position over the next twelve months, CHPT stock may continue to slide lower, as unprofitable growth stocks continue to fall out of favor.</p><h2>Canoo (GOEV)</h2><p><b>Canoo</b> (NASDAQ:<b>GOEV</b>) shares have taken a 83.5% haircut so far in 2022, but this early-stage maker of electric delivery vehicles has actually made major progress throughout this year. Namely, the company has received some large orders for its vehicles from high-profile customers, including the likes of <b>Walmart</b> (NYSE:<b>WMT</b>).</p><p>So, why has GOEV stock taken such a big dive since January? Blame it on shareholder dilution. As Louis Navellier discussed back in October, this cash-starved startup needs capital in order to fulfill these orders. The company has continued to raise this cash through the dilutive sale of new shares.</p><p>Based on its latest Securities and Exchange Commission (or SEC) filings, it’s clear that Canoo continues to lean on this financing source. Future equity raises will limit how much GOEV stock will be ultimately worth on a per-share basis (if it ever becomes profitable). Thus, for long-term investors, this is a dilution story that’s worth avoiding, as a further sharp decline in price may be in store.</p><h2>Hyzon Motors (HYZN)</h2><p>A rich valuation and poor fundamentals aren’t the only reason why <b>Hyzon Motors</b> (NASDAQ:<b>HYZN</b>) is among the top EV stocks to sell. The question of whether things are really on the up-and-up with this company is another big concern as well.</p><p>This year, HYZN stock was one of several stocks hit by scandal and controversy. Not only did Hyzon find itself the target of an SEC investigation, but the company itself stated that past financial statements “cannot be relied upon.” Additionally, despite releasing new figures, these more recently-released numbers aren’t exactly much to get excited about.</p><p>In the first quarter of 2022 (the last period in which HYZN has provided quarterly figures), the company reported a $26.8 million operating loss, on just $356,000 in revenue. With the situation possibly getting materially worse since then, going against the grain and buying HYZN stock today appears to be a move that will ultimately end in tears.</p><h2>Lucid Group (LCID)</h2><p>A year ago, <b>Lucid Group</b> (NASDAQ:<b>LCID</b>) appeared poised to eventually grab a large share of the premium EV market. Flash forward to today, and the company’s prospects have diminished considerably. Initially, due to production headwinds, Lucid announced some significantly reduced production targets.</p><p>More recently, the company slashed its targets due to quarterly results falling short of expectations, and a drop in reservations for its vehicles. The company reported a record number of vehicle deliveries in November. China also appears keen on easing on its “Zero Covid” policy, which has hit both production and demand for Nio’s vehicles.</p><p>Even so, as one <i>Seeking Alpha</i> commentator recently argued, this big increase in November may be due to China’s EV tax incentives expiring this year. If this proves true, and sales growth sputters again starting in 2023, shares could return to sub-$10 per share prices.</p><h2>QuantumScape (QS)</h2><p>After its SPAC merger in late-2020, EV battery technology startup <b>Quantumscape</b> (NYSE:<b>QS</b>) skyrocketed to prices well over $100 per share. Presently, investors can buy this same stock at around $7 per share.</p><p>That said, those who think this means QS stock is now in oversold territory should think otherwise. Shares in this company, which is at work developing lithium solid state batteries (or SSBs) for electric vehicles, may keep dropping, as time is not on its side.</p><p>At least, that’s the view of <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MSTLW\">Morgan Stanley</a>’s Adam Jonas. In November, the analyst downgraded shares from “hold” to “sell,” and lowered his price target from $12 to $4 per share. This downgrade appears to be mostly due to the fact that QuantumScape’s timeline to commercialization is far too long. Years away from reaching its next commercialization hurdle, rising interest rates and high operating losses are likely to apply more pressure to the stock.</p><h2>Tesla (TSLA)</h2><p><b>Tesla</b> (NASDAQ:<b>TSLA</b>) is still not only the most valuable EV stock by market cap, but also the most valuable automaker by market cap (for now). However, TSLA has fallen more than 50% from its all-time high, and could be at risk of falling further.</p><p>Globally, competition in the EV sector is heating up. Incumbent automakers and “Tesla killers” alike in the U.S. are moving quickly to grab their piece of the electric vehicle market. Tesla could also be facing big issues in China, where it is rumored to be pulling back on production.</p><p>Worse yet, with CEO Elon Musk preoccupied with his latest personal acquisition (<b>Twitter</b>), these factors could have even more of a negative impact than they would if Musk were fully focused on keeping this EV powerhouse at the top of the heap. Since then, however, CHPT stock has all but fallen back to this initial SPAC price, changing hands today for around $11 per share.Still, I wouldn’t assume that the $10 level is any sort of floor for ChargePoint. Although the company reported 93% revenue growth last quarter, it remains far away from reaching profitability any time soon. Expected to burn through half of its cash position over the next twelve months, CHPT stock may continue to slide lower, as unprofitable growth stocks continue to fall out of favor.Canoo (GOEV)Canoo (NASDAQ:GOEV) shares have taken a 83.5% haircut so far in 2022, but this early-stage maker of electric delivery vehicles has actually made major progress throughout this year. Namely, the company has received some large orders for its vehicles from high-profile customers, including the likes of Walmart (NYSE:WMT).So, why has GOEV stock taken such a big dive since January? Blame it on shareholder dilution. As Louis Navellier discussed back in October, this cash-starved startup needs capital in order to fulfill these orders. The company has continued to raise this cash through the dilutive sale of new shares.Based on its latest Securities and Exchange Commission (or SEC) filings, it’s clear that Canoo continues to lean on this financing source. Future equity raises will limit how much GOEV stock will be ultimately worth on a per-share basis (if it ever becomes profitable). Thus, for long-term investors, this is a dilution story that’s worth avoiding, as a further sharp decline in price may be in store.Hyzon Motors (HYZN)A rich valuation and poor fundamentals aren’t the only reason why Hyzon Motors (NASDAQ:HYZN) is among the top EV stocks to sell. The question of whether things are really on the up-and-up with this company is another big concern as well.This year, HYZN stock was one of several stocks hit by scandal and controversy. Not only did Hyzon find itself the target of an SEC investigation, but the company itself stated that past financial statements “cannot be relied upon.” Additionally, despite releasing new figures, these more recently-released numbers aren’t exactly much to get excited about.In the first quarter of 2022 (the last period in which HYZN has provided quarterly figures), the company reported a $26.8 million operating loss, on just $356,000 in revenue. With the situation possibly getting materially worse since then, going against the grain and buying HYZN stock today appears to be a move that will ultimately end in tears.Lucid Group (LCID)A year ago, Lucid Group (NASDAQ:LCID) appeared poised to eventually grab a large share of the premium EV market. Flash forward to today, and the company’s prospects have diminished considerably. Initially, due to production headwinds, Lucid announced some significantly reduced production targets.More recently, the company slashed its targets due to quarterly results falling short of expectations, and a drop in reservations for its vehicles. (NASDAQ:TSLA) for a while. I have covered numerous subjects related to the electric vehicle (“EV”) company over the years, but I have returned often to one in particular: Tesla’s solar energy business.</p>\n<p>It has been a while since I lasttook a look under the hoodof Tesla’s solar division. With the first two quarters of 2021 in the rearview mirror, it feels like now is a good time to revisit the long-struggling business unit.</p>\n<p>Much has changed for Tesla Solar in 2021, little of it for the good. Let’s discuss why this is the case.</p>\n<p>Solar Deployments In H1 2021: Still In A Long-Term Downtrend</p>\n<p>As I have&nbsp;discussed at length&nbsp;on&nbsp;numerous occasions&nbsp;over the years, Tesla Solar has been in material multi-year decline from a deployments perspective. Thus, when Tesla reported Q1 2021 earnings, I naturally looked to the solar deployment numbers to see if the negative pattern had continued. As it turned out, Tesla had managed to achieve a major sequential jump in deployments, a fact the company was quick tocrow about in its Q1 investor letter:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “Solar Retrofit and Solar Roof Solar deployments reached 92 MW in Q1, our strongest quarter in 2.5 years. Solar Roof deployments grew 9x compared to the same period last year.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Tesla reported solar deployments to the tune of 92 megawatts (“MW”) in Q1, the most it had managed in years. Under the circumstances, Tesla can hardly be blamed for having wanted to highlight such a marked improvement in chart form:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7270ea980168a8e2976a38fd80b6b5c7\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"335\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Tesla Inc.</span></p>\n<p>The chart above, which was included in the Q1 investor letter, certainly looks like it could be a sign of a turnaround in the making. However, its relatively limited timescale also limits its usefulness to investors and analysts interested in understanding the long-term performance and trajectory of Tesla's solar business. Charting the full history of Tesla's quarterly solar deployments through Q1 2021 offers a rather different perspective:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dab180dd817e9d4db21ed6ff4014e0d7\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"273\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Author; Tesla Inc.</span></p>\n<p>I hardly have to remind investors that one quarter of growth does not a pattern make. If Tesla could sustain that growth into Q2, then one might be able to talk legitimately about a turnaround. As it turned out, Tesladeployed just 85 MW in Q2, a more than7.5% sequential drop:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/43e076db4124ae5b339c1c78e6f33502\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"463\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: TeslaCharts; Tesla Inc.</span></p>\n<p>Tesla's solar deployments were not just lower in Q2 than in Q1, however. At 85MW, Tesla actually managed one 1MW less than it did in Q4 2020, despite seasonal impacts traditionally weakening year-end solar deployment rates. That would seem to put paid to any notion that Tesla's solar operations have been making a significant or sustainable turnaround.</p>\n<p>Deployments may have climbed significantly from their nadir in the first half of last year, but they remain a pale shadow of what Tesla was managing five years ago. Even Electrek, a website well known for its consistently bullish Tesla commentary, felt compelled to call Musk out on his claim. According to Electrek, Musk's tweet was \"a bit of an exaggeration\" and that the actual production rate at the time was closer to 500 Solar Roofs per week. However, even that reduced projection appears to overstate the level of steady-state production and installation by a significant margin.</p>\n<p>The Solar Roof has seen its fortunes improve little in 2021 thus far. According to renewable energy industry journalist Eric Wesoff, Tesla had&nbsp;yet to install 1,000 Solar Roofs total&nbsp;as recently as this April. This pessimistic view was further reinforced last month when the Wall Street Journal&nbsp;reported&nbsp;that the Securities and Exchange Commission had already confronted Tesla over Musk's dubious prior Solar Roof claims:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “In correspondence sent to Tesla in 2019 and 2020, the SEC said tweets Mr. Musk wrote about Tesla’s solar roof production volumes and its stock price hadn’t undergone the required preapproval by Tesla’s lawyers. Tesla's market capitalization, which currently stands in excess of $670 billion, is nearly five times greater than that of Volkswagen AG (OTCPK:VWAGY), the world's largest automaker. That is in spite of the fact that Tesla currently has barely 5% of Volkswagen's annual automotive production capacity. In other words, Tesla is currently priced as if it will not only surpass the likes of Volkswagen in terms of production and sales volume, but will radically exceed them.</p>\n<p>While irrational exuberance about an EV-dominated future can explain some of Tesla's eye-watering share price, it is not the only factor. Tesla's valuation is also the result of the company's efforts to position itself as \"more than a car company.\" Solar has always been a core component of this narrative, yet it has failed to live up to the hype. Deployments remain far below the highs set half a decade ago, even as&nbsp;customer satisfaction&nbsp;has continued to fall.</p>\n<p>Moreover, the fundamental economics of Tesla's solar operations have always been shaky at best. Indeed, even as Tesla's automotive operations have inched toward breakeven, the&nbsp;margins for its solar business remain painfully negative. (NASDAQ:TSLA) for a while. I have covered numerous subjects related to the electric vehicle (“EV”) company over the years, but I have returned often to one in particular: Tesla’s solar energy business.\nIt has been a while since I lasttook a look under the hoodof Tesla’s solar division. With the first two quarters of 2021 in the rearview mirror, it feels like now is a good time to revisit the long-struggling business unit.\nMuch has changed for Tesla Solar in 2021, little of it for the good. Let’s discuss why this is the case.\nSolar Deployments In H1 2021: Still In A Long-Term Downtrend\nAs I have discussed at length on numerous occasions over the years, Tesla Solar has been in material multi-year decline from a deployments perspective. Thus, when Tesla reported Q1 2021 earnings, I naturally looked to the solar deployment numbers to see if the negative pattern had continued. As it turned out, Tesla had managed to achieve a major sequential jump in deployments, a fact the company was quick tocrow about in its Q1 investor letter:\n\n “Solar Retrofit and Solar Roof Solar deployments reached 92 MW in Q1, our strongest quarter in 2.5 years. Solar Roof deployments grew 9x compared to the same period last year.”\n\nTesla reported solar deployments to the tune of 92 megawatts (“MW”) in Q1, the most it had managed in years. Under the circumstances, Tesla can hardly be blamed for having wanted to highlight such a marked improvement in chart form:\nSource: Tesla Inc.\nThe chart above, which was included in the Q1 investor letter, certainly looks like it could be a sign of a turnaround in the making. However, its relatively limited timescale also limits its usefulness to investors and analysts interested in understanding the long-term performance and trajectory of Tesla's solar business. Charting the full history of Tesla's quarterly solar deployments through Q1 2021 offers a rather different perspective:\nSource: Author; Tesla Inc.\nI hardly have to remind investors that one quarter of growth does not a pattern make. If Tesla could sustain that growth into Q2, then one might be able to talk legitimately about a turnaround. Analysts expect earnings per share to more than double this year and increase at an average rate of about 45% annually over the next few years.</p>\n<p>Yet Tesla is one of the most polarizing stocks on Wall Street.</p>\n<p>According to Refinitiv, 14 analysts have the stock rated a \"buy,\" 13 a \"hold\" and 10 a \"sell.\" Contrast that with GM, which has 20 buy ratings, two holds and no sells.</p>\n<p><b>Skeptics have many questions about Tesla and Musk</b></p>\n<p>The consensus target price for Tesla stock from analysts is $652, about 6% lower than its current price.</p>\n<p>Tesla critics have a pile of worries to point to. Concerns about Tesla's management bench sprung up after longtime executive Jerome Guillen abruptly left earlier this month — especially since CEO Elon Musk is also busy running SpaceX.</p>\n<p>And Musk's obsession with bitcoin and dogecoin, along with other extracurricular activities like hosting Saturday Night Live and constantly tweeting, might be a turnoff for some investors and analysts.</p>\n<p>Still, there is no denying that the company has plenty of ardent fans, and its vehicles have grabbed plenty of positive headlines this week alone.</p>\n<p>For example, Cars.com (CARS) announced earlier this week that Tesla's Model 3 was ranked first in its American-Made Index, which measures how much a vehicle contributes to the US economy based on factors such as domestic factory jobs, manufacturing plants and parts sourcing.</p>\n<p>The Model 3 edged out Ford's Mustang for the top spot, and Tesla's Model Y also ranked third on the list. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.</p>\n<p>Instead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.</p>\n<p>As a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.</p>\n<p>This “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.</p>\n<p>Both the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.</p>\n<p>Clearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”</p>\n<p>As someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know do<i>not</i>want to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.</p>\n<p>What Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.</p>\n<p>The good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.</p>\n<p>This is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.</p>\n<p>However, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.</p>\n<p><b>Taking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential</b></p>\n<p>I’m talking about&nbsp;<b>Nio, Inc.</b>(NYSE:<b>NIO</b>). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio back in February.</p>\n<p>The company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.</p>\n<p>The company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies like<b>NVIDIA Corporation</b>(NASDAQ:<b>NVDA</b>), another one of my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.</p>\n<p>Now, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.</p>\n<p>With the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.</p>\n<p>That means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.</p>\n<p>Shares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”</p>\n<p>Interestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.\nHowever, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.\nTaking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential\nI’m talking about Nio, Inc.(NYSE:NIO). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio back in February.\nThe company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.\nThe company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies likeNVIDIA Corporation(NASDAQ:NVDA), another one of myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.\nNow, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.\nWith the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.\nThat means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.\nShares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”\nInterestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. The increased availability of high-speed 5G wireless networks continues to fuel demand for the newer iPhone models. Apple's services and wearables revenue also continues to grow significantly.</p>\n<p>Over the long run, my view is that technological innovations will keep Apple among the favorite stocks for both Robinhood investors and Wall Street analysts. The internet giant ranks as the ninth most popular stock on Robinhood. Analysts think that Amazon's share price could rise 31% over the next 12 months.</p>\n<p>There are two key growth drivers that could enable Amazon to deliver that kind of growth. The company's Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform continues to fire on all cylinders and is highly profitable. Amazon is also experiencing strong momentum with its digital advertising business.</p>\n<p>Value investor Bill Miller even thinks that these two units&nbsp;could account for most of Amazon's valuation&nbsp;within the next couple of years. He's also bullish about the company's business-to-business and logistics platforms. I suspect Miller's optimism is on point.</p>\n<p>Don't forget e-commerce, though. Amazon remains the biggest e-commerce company in the world. Online sales still account for less than 14% of total retail sales in the U.S. There's a lot of room for Amazon to run in its core business.</p>\n<p><b>Bionano Genomics</b></p>\n<p>You might be at least a little surprised by the third top Robinhood stock on our list that Wall Street really likes. The average price target for&nbsp;<b>Bionano Genomics</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:BNGO)&nbsp;is a whopping 80% higher than the stock's current price.</p>\n<p>Bionano&nbsp;reported better-than-expected Q1 results&nbsp;in May. Revenue jumped 179% year over year to a record-high $3.2 million. Although the company remained unprofitable, its bottom line moved in the right direction.</p>\n<p>Customers appear to like Bionano's Saphyr genome mapping system. As the install base grows, the company's recurring revenue from consumables grows. That's the kind of business model that investors hope could really pay off over the long run.</p>\n<p>Bionano projects that it will have 150 Saphyr systems in the field by the end of this year, up 50% from the end of 2020. The company also anticipates receiving accreditation for additional laboratory-developed tests for Saphyr soon. Amazon currently controls more than 40% of all online sales in the U.S., and it's signed up 200 million people to Prime worldwide. The fees it collects from Prime memberships help to ensure it can undercut brick-and-mortar retailers on price.</p><p>As for AWS, it grew sales by 30% in 2020 (i.e., during the worst economic downturn in decades). AWS has a current run-rate of $54 billion in annual sales, meaning it alone could fetch a valuation north of $600 billion and still be valued cheaply within the cloud space. Because AWS generates considerably higher margins than retail, it's Amazon's key to a cash flow explosion in the years to come.<img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F628448%2Fcloud-computing-data-server-storage-email-blockchain-saas-getty.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Image source: Getty Images.</p><h2>Microsoft</h2><p>Despite a myriad of change since 1999, tech stock <b>Microsoft</b> (NASDAQ:MSFT) is the only company to remain in the top 10 by market cap in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014, 2019, and currently. Thus, it's a safe bet to suggest it'll hang onto a top-10 spot over the coming 14 years.</p><p>Although Microsoft is still generating plenty of cash flow from its legacy software and Windows operating system, the cloud is its future. Cloud infrastructure service Azure, along with enterprise and consumer cloud products across all of its core brands (Office, Dynamics, and Windows), can fuel sustainable double-digit or high single-digit growth for a long time to come.</p><p>Plus, Microsoft is loaded with cash, meaning it can use acquisitions as a means to boost its growth prospects and remain competitive.</p><p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F628448%2Faapl-iphone-xr.PNG&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"463\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Image source: Apple.</p><h2>Apple</h2><p>Speaking of cash cows, I believe <b>Apple</b> (NASDAQ:AAPL) remains safely in the top 10, even if its growth rate were to taper a bit. Keep in mind that Apple generated nearly $100 billion in operating cash flow over the trailing 12 months, which means the company has an abundant cash pile to buy back its stock, pay dividends, reinvest in innovation, and make the occasional acquisition to bolster its product portfolio.</p><p>In the years to come, Tim Cook will continue to oversee Apple's transition to a services company. Amazon currently controls more than 40% of all online sales in the U.S., and it's signed up 200 million people to Prime worldwide. The fees it collects from Prime memberships help to ensure it can undercut brick-and-mortar retailers on price.As for AWS, it grew sales by 30% in 2020 (i.e., during the worst economic downturn in decades). AWS has a current run-rate of $54 billion in annual sales, meaning it alone could fetch a valuation north of $600 billion and still be valued cheaply within the cloud space. Thus, it's a safe bet to suggest it'll hang onto a top-10 spot over the coming 14 years.Although Microsoft is still generating plenty of cash flow from its legacy software and Windows operating system, the cloud is its future. The app doesn't charge commissions for buying or selling on major exchanges, and it allows fractional shares&nbsp;for a number of securities. The company even awards new members with free shares of stock.</p>\n<p>While it's fantastic to see young investors putting their money to work in the greatest wealth creator on the planet, it's also disturbing to see what they've been buying. Instead of taking the tried-and-true long-term investing approach, many are chasing momentum plays, penny stocks, and companies with poor operating performance.</p>\n<p>Don't believe me? Though we witnessed these squeezes take place in January and February, the recent trading in these names looks to be more hype or mania than short-covering.</p>\n<p>History is pretty clear that hype-driven stocks will eventually have the rug pulled out from under them. AMC, for example, is going to struggle just to service its more than $5.4 billion in corporate debt and doesn't appear to have a chance to pay back what comes due in 2026. It also has $473 million in deferred rent obligations to contend with.</p>\n<p>As for GameStop, it boasts a healthy net cash position following a recent share offering. But it was very late in transitioning to digital gaming, and as a result will see its sales go nowhere for years to come. Sundial Growers and Zomedica are two of the 18 most-held stocks on the platform, yet both can be purchased for under $1 a share.</p>\n<p>Psychologically, young and/or novice investors believe that owning more shares of stock will give them a better chance to make a lot of money. There's also the belief that it's easier to double a stock from $1 a share to $2 than, say, $100 to $200. But the reality is that penny stocks almost always trade at a low share price for very good reasons.</p>\n<p>In the case of pot stock Sundial Growers, it's because the company's management team can't stop drowning its investors in share offerings. Earlier this year, the company's board OK'd an additional $800 million at-the-market share offering. Since the end of September, more than 1.35 billion shares have been issued. With 1.86 billion shares now outstanding, Sundial has almost no chance of ever generating meaningful earnings per share, or perhaps even remaining listed on the <b>Nasdaq</b>&nbsp;exchange.</p>\n<p>As for veterinary health company Zomedica, it only began commercializing its first product in mid-March. Shares are currently valued at close to 40 times sales looking three years into the future. In this respect, I agree with them.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Robinhood is shortchanging its users in the cannabis department. Since the trading platform won't allow its users to buy and sell stocks listed on the over-the-counter exchange, and U.S. pot stocks can't list on major exchanges due to cannabis being illicit at the federal level, Robinhood users are stuck buying Canadian weed stocks. To put things as nicely as possible, the Canadian pot stocks have been a disaster.</p>\n<p>Aurora Cannabis, which at <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> time was the most-held stock on Robinhood, has been burying its shareholders in dilution for years. It used its stock as collateral for around a dozen deals and grossly overpaid for all of its acquisitions. Even with legal Canadian weed sales climbing, Aurora's top line has been stuck in neutral or gone in reverse.</p>\n<p>Canopy Growth is another popular marijuana stock that's been an utter disappointment. The company's cash pile has dwindled significantly over the past couple of years, and Canopy is still nowhere close to generating a profit, even after closing two large greenhouses in British Columbia.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/11b7b594784b441dbeb82fcdb187aac3\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Starbucks.</span></p>\n<h2>Brand-name companies are popular with millennials</h2>\n<p>Lastly, you'll note that among the meme stocks, pot stocks, and penny stocks, millennial investors have also piled into brand-name companies that they're familiar with or regularly engage with.</p>\n<p>For instance, electric-vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla has supplanted Apple as the most-held stock in the Robinhood universe. Generally speaking, the desire to take action against climate change increases the younger someone is. Motivated young investors who want to see positive climate action taken, and who have a favorable view of CEO Elon Musk, have flocked to Tesla. In kind, Tesla's production numbers have risen significantly, and could near 800,000 EVs in 2021.</p>\n<p>Coffee giant Starbucks has also been rising up the leaderboard in recent months. It has used its mobile app and rewards as a means to keep the younger generation loyal to its brand. It has also introduced an array of healthier lunches and snack options to improve foot traffic.
