it.\n
\n
Super fans of the latest and greatest high-endTesla, Inc.(NASDAQ:TSLA) model received some disappointing news a week ago when CEO Elon Musk abruptly canceled the release of its highly anticipated Model S Plaid Plus with a tweet on June 6.
\n
Source: nrqemi / Shutterstock.com
\n
Musk wrote there was… “No need, as Plaid is just so good.”
\n
The Model S Plaid Plus was supposed to be the fastest, most powerful and priciest version of the company’s Model S. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.
\n
Instead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.
\n
As a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.
\n
This “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.
\n
Both the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.
\n
Clearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”
\n
As someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know donotwant to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.
\n
What Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.
\n
The good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.
\n
This is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.
\n
However, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.
\n
Taking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential
\n
I’m talking about Nio, Inc.(NYSE:NIO). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio back in February.
\n
The company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.
\n
The company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies likeNVIDIA Corporation(NASDAQ:NVDA), another one of myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.
\n
Now, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.
\n
With the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.
\n
That means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.
\n
Shares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”
\n
Interestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.\nInstead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.\nAs a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.\nThis “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.\nBoth the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. This holds true for Tesla (TSLA) and XPeng (XPEV), two EV players that both seek to grow massively in China this year. The similarities don't end there, as both companies are also ambitious when it comes to integrating tech with their EVs, such as developing autonomous driving capabilities. In this article, we will take a closer look at the two and see which company looks like a better pick right here.

Similarities And Differences

Both Tesla, Inc. and XPeng, Inc. have gone all the way towards EVs, instead of opting for a middle-of-the-road approach like Li Auto (LI) with its hybrid cars and many legacy car companies that offer a diversified portfolio of EVs, hybrids, and ICE cars.

On one hand, this BEV-only approach limits the addressable market for both Tesla and Xiaopeng Motors, at least for now, as many consumers are not willing to buy a BEV yet. On the other hand, due to being focused on this segment of the vast automobile industry, they can gather the most expertise in this high-growth field that will likely eventually dominate the entire auto industry. Their BEV-only approach could thus pay off in the long run, as this approach may lead to advantages over companies that use a more nuanced approach when it comes to shifting towards the EV megatrend.

Both companies are trying to move towards the intersection between automobile companies and tech companies, through increased focus on \"techy\" offerings such as smart cars, interconnectivity, and autonomous driving.

Unlike Tesla, however, XPeng is not overly ambitious in becoming an integrated energy company, which differentiates the two. Tesla has on top of its car business and tech aspirations, also energy storage and a solar panel business -both aren't profitable, however. Tesla also is a clearly larger company for now, as it currently leads the global EV market, with sales being expected at around 800,000 cars this year, which is significantly more than the expected sales for XPeng and all other EV pureplays, including NIO (NIO). The approach when it comes to the two companies' respective model lineups differs as well. Tesla went for the top end of the market at first, introducing its high-priced model S, before rolling out an SUV and a more mass-market model later on. XPeng, on the other hand, introduced an SUV first, which seems like an approach that has the potential to gain higher market share in a short period of time, as SUVs are a larger market segment compared to luxury sedans. It is also noteworthy that XPeng has introduced a total of 3 models in just 3 years (G3, P7, P5), whereas it took Tesla significantly longer to roll out the X and the 3 following the launch of its Model S in 2012 (not counting the Roadster, which was sold in very low volumes only).

XPEV And TSLA Performance

Looking at the stock performance of Tesla and XPeng, we see that both have benefited massively from a massive EV investment boom in 2020. Ultra-loose monetary policy, coupled with government subsidies and encouraging market growth, has resulted in exploding share prices for many EV companies last year, including these two:

Between August 2020, when XPeng went public, and the beginning of the current year, the two companies have seen their shares rise by 75% and 102%, respectively, while the broader EV sector also delivered a very compelling 69% return. In 2021, however, valuations have declined to some extent, as the market overall became warier of highly-valued growth names.

Year-to-date, Tesla's shares are down by 12%, whereas XPeng has seen its shares lose more than 40% of their value. The same happened to many other EV stocks, especially those that are still relatively young. NIO, LUCID (CCIV), Fisker (FSR), Lordstown Motors (RIDE), and many more are also down quite a lot from their all-time highs from a couple of months ago, in some cases losing well above 50%.

We can thus say that buying into Tesla or XPeng during or prior to the boom in 2020 has worked very well for investors, whereas those that bought at the highs may be steeply in the red by now, as the whole sector has lost quite a bit of steam in recent months. Due to the very high valuations that some investors paid for EV stocks when they were at their highs, the recent underperformance versus broad equity markets is not a large surprise.

Can XPeng Compete With Tesla

The EV industry is a high-growth industry for sure, and thus we should consider the growth outlook for XPEV and TSLA, of course. Tesla is a significantly larger company than XPeng, which is why its revenue growth, on a relative basis, will likely be lower compared to XPeng.

This statement is based on both the guidance from both companies' management teams - Tesla is forecasting ~50% growth a year, while XPeng is more aggressive - and on the current consensus estimates by the analyst community:

The current analyst consensus sees Tesla grow its revenues to $49 billion this year, with a growth rate of 37% and 27% forecast for 2022 and 2023, based on the consensus revenue estimates for these years. Looking at XPeng, we see that the consensus revenueestimatefor this year stands at $2.15 billion, with $4.2 billion being forecasted for next year. This equates to a revenue growth rate of 95% for 2022. Based on the revenue of$900 millionthat XPeng generated last year, the current consensus estimate sees XPeng grow by almost 140% this year. XPeng has grown its deliveries by more than 300% on a year-over-year basis during the first quarter, thus it looks like the company is on track to achieve a revenue growth rate well north of 100% this year. Tesla, on the other hand, will grow by about 55% this year if they can hit the $49 billion sales estimate for the current year.

All in all, we can thus say that the forecasted growth rate at XPeng is significantly higher compared to Tesla, which isn't a very large surprise. XPeng is smaller and can thus deliver a high relative growth rate more easily, and it will see a lot of international growth in coming years as it rolls out its models in additional markets. Tesla, on the other hand, as a more mature company, is already active in more markets and will thus see fewer tailwinds from geographic growth. China's politics, which seems to favor domestic manufacturers over foreign companies such as Tesla, also should lead to tailwinds for XPeng in China, which is the largest automobile market in the world. It should be noted, however, that Tesla will most likely still deliver growth that is way higher than what one can expect from legacy auto companies in coming years, even though it won't deliver the growth rates that can be expected from XPeng, NIO, and other EV pureplays.

Due to its larger size, Tesla is able to generate more attractive margins than XPeng for now. XPeng will likely not be profitable this year or next year, whereas Tesla has managed to generate net profits in recent quarters and will likely do the same in coming years, although, for now, profits are dependent on regulatory credit sales. The better profitability at Tesla allows the company to generate better cash flows, which naturally is beneficial for the company's ability to finance future growth investments organically. XPeng, due to not being profitable yet, might have to use either debt financing or issue more shares to finance future growth investments, although its$5+ billion cash cushiongives it a lot of near-term flexibility.

Looking at the valuations of the two companies, we can say that comparing them on an earnings multiple basis isn't a great idea. XPeng isn't profitable yet, and analysts' earnings estimates for Tesla have been ratherunreliable in the past. Instead, we can look at the revenue multiples these two companies trade at right now. Tesla, being valued at $600 billion, trades at 9 times next year's revenue. That is, compared to how legacy auto companies are valued, extremely expensive. On the other hand, we should note that Tesla has gotten a little less expensive over the last couple of months, as shares used to trade at even higher multiples a while ago. XPeng, on the other hand, with a market capitalization of $20 billion, is currently valued at 4.8 times next year's revenue, which is roughly half the valuation Tesla trades at. Some may argue that Tesla deserves a higher valuation due to its larger size and established profitability, but one can also take the opposite position and argue that XPeng should trade at a higher valuation, due to a significantly higher growth rate.

When looking at how these competitors do in different fields, we should also take a look at their autonomous driving ambitions. Tesla is, according to some, very well positioned when it comes to developing a self-driving car. Its current offering, however, is only capable ofdelivering Level II autonomy. Not too much is known about XPeng's autonomous driving program, but the company has recentlyset several recordsfor autonomous driving performance in China, which indicates that the company belongs to the leaders in this space as well. XPeng is significantly smaller than Tesla for now, but it looks like XPeng is very capable of competing with Tesla in a range of metrics, including delivering growth (where it actually easily outperforms Tesla for now), and in autonomous driving capabilities.

Tesla Vs XPeng: The Better Buy

The two companies are attractive for different types of investors. Those that favor the largest fish in the tank and that do not mind the very high valuation will likely favor Tesla, which is also more diversified internationally. Those that seek a higher-growth company at a lower valuation will opt for XPeng. Additionally, investors may want to factor in the exposure to the Chinese market - those that want a play for Chinese consumption growth will like XPeng, those that worry about regulation in the country may opt for US-based Tesla. It should be noted that both companies are looking relatively expensive on a price to sales basis compared to other auto companies, but I personally would see XPeng as the more attractive choice right here. This depends, to a large degree, on the things you value in an investment, however. Those that are less focused on valuation, or that like Elon Musk's ambitions in additional industries may choose differently. Ultimately, your investment goals and investment approach decide which of the two companies may be a better choice for your portfolio, while it is, of course, also possible to own both - or neither.
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Tesla Vs. The dynamic company has been volatile in the last year or so, and each day seems to bring a new set of headlines that have potential to move the stock.

This quarterly review of NioNIO,+0.71%Inc.’sstock aims to look beyond the latest headlines. We will show comparisons of key metrics to watch and a summary of the company’s most important issues to help investors make better decisions.

These updates will also include comparisons of results to competitors. Keep in mind that no two companies are alike — even rivals don’t compete in every space. Any investor needs to do their own research to make informed long-term decisions.

Where Nio fits in

It’s undeniable that Nio is red hot lately, with a share price that has surged to almost $40 from $3 in early 2020. However, share price is only one reflection of a company’s health.

When you look at the landscape of the most widely traded automaker stocks right now, including traditional manufacturers such as General Motors Co.GM,+0.46%and the EV icon Tesla Inc.TSLA,+1.33%,Nio is decidedly smaller as an actual business. Though its nearly $70 billion in market value puts its stock on par with legacy companies like GM, balance-sheet statistics show the two companies aren’t even close.

This is the fundamental challenge for investors trying to value Nio’s shares. Do you place your emphasis on metrics such as revenue, manufacturing assets and total vehicles sold? Or are you betting on the future state of this dynamic company rather than cold statistics from last quarter that may already be out of date?

Key metrics

Growth is important for Nio investors, and it’s undeniable that the company is seeing an impressive expansion. That’s particularly true over the last year in what was otherwise a fairly hostile environment for car sales.

First, let’s look at operational metrics before we get to the much-followed growth rate in vehicles sold to illustrate how much smaller Nio is than legacy automakers that may be similarly valued by market cap.

Assets and cash

Consider that GM had $238 billion in assets at the end of 2020. Nio didn’t even have $10 billion! What’s more, lest you think this is all attributed to its extensive manufacturing facilities, over $29 billion of GM’s assets were cold, hard cash.

(FACTSET)Sales growth

Similarly, the numbers of vehicles Nio has been selling haven’t even been close to those of larger rivals. The company sold just under 44,000 vehicles last year. That compares with nearly 3.4 million vehicles sold for GM and 10.7 million for Toyota Motor Corp.TM,+0.45%across all its brands.

(COMPANY FILINGS)

Of course, this lower base means more potential to many investors rather than a reason to be scared away from Nio’s stock. During the first quarter, Nio sold five times as many cars as it did in the same period a year earlier. That growth rate blows the doors off everyone, even Tesla.

And just as the total number of vehicles increased dramatically, so naturally did Nio’s top line. But as we will see, that uptick in revenue has yet to translate to significant profits.

Pricing power and profitability

The rapid expansion of vehicle sales naturally has resulted in soaring revenue. However, the Chinese EV upstart continues to operate at a loss.

Gross margins have admittedly improved, but profit forecasts for fiscal 2022 are still negative for Nio. And more importantly, when you look at peers including legacy automakers, it doesn’t appear realistic that Nio could see outsized improvement from its current gross margins that are in-line with the rest of the industry. That means as it continues to invest heavily in future growth, investors may have to make their peace with the fact that the company is trading current profit potential for that vision.

(FACTSET)Free cash flow

Free cash flow is another area where Nio has a bit of work to do, particularly if it wants to win over investors who care about this metric, which measures how much money is on hand at a company after it pays the bills for regular operations. Based on the last 12 months, free cash flow has firmed up but is still barely out of the red.

However, as a smaller company that is scaling up rapidly, it is reasonable to expect this kind of gap between Nio and its more mature peers as it comes into its own. By contrast, established firms like GM and Toyota that saw serious cash flow concerns over the last year don’t have the same excuse. Tesla managed aGAAPnet income of $438 million in the first quarter, up from just $16 million one-year prior. It would appear, at least at first glance, that the electric-vehicle (EV) pioneer is on the right track in terms of profitability.
\n
The problem is that these profits aren't really coming from the cars that Tesla sells. The company currently generates hundreds of millions of dollars in pure profit each quarter from the sale of regulatory credits, a side effect of other automakers not making enough zero-emission vehicles to meet regulatory requirements.
\n
Regulatory credit sales totaled $518 million in the first quarter, accounting for all of Tesla's profit and then some. This has been the case in previous quarters, as well. In fact, after backing out regulatory credits from Tesla's net income, the company has been unprofitable for six-straight quarters.
\n
Tesla's bottom line got an additional boost in the first quarter from a gain onthe sale ofBitcointo the tune of $101 million, which showed up as a reduction in costs. The picture doesn't look so rosy when both regulatory credits and Bitcoin gains are excluded:
\n

\n
DATA SOURCE: TESLA. CHART BY AUTHOR.
\n
There's no question that Tesla's growth is impressive, but there's also no question that the core business of making and selling cars is not turning a profit. The question Tesla investors need to ask themselves is: If Tesla isn't profitable now, when there's little to no competition in electric vehicles in the United States, what's going to happen when a deluge of competition fromtraditional automakersarrives?
\n
A ton of competition is coming
\n
Tesla's brand has a cult following, so some people will be buying Tesla vehicles regardless of the other options available. But that's not likely to be the case for most people.
\n
The number of electric vehicles available for purchase in the U.S. is set to explode in the coming years.General Motors(NYSE:GM)is planning to launch 30 EVs globally by 2025, with two-thirds set to be sold in North America. The company is aiming to sell 1 million EVs annually in North America by 2025.
\n
Those models include electric versions of the company's GMC Hummer and Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Tesla has a loyal customer base, but so does GM. Someone who's been a GM truck buyer for years is likely to stick with GM when they decide to switch to an electric vehicle.
\n

\n
\n
Ford(NYSE:F)is also pouring resources into electric vehicles, allocating $29 billion for electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. The company's plans include anelectric version of its F-150 pickup truck, which should hit the production lines by mid-2022. Given GM's and Ford's plans, it will not be easy for Tesla to steal away market share in the lucrative pickup-truck segment.
\n
Other car companies have big plans, as well.Volkswagen(OTC:VWAGY)already sells over 200,000 EVs annually andexpects that number to double this year. Tesla managed aGAAPnet income of $438 million in the first quarter, up from just $16 million one-year prior. It would appear, at least at first glance, that the electric-vehicle (EV) pioneer is on the right track in terms of profitability.\nThe problem is that these profits aren't really coming from the cars that Tesla sells. The company currently generates hundreds of millions of dollars in pure profit each quarter from the sale of regulatory credits, a side effect of other automakers not making enough zero-emission vehicles to meet regulatory requirements.\nRegulatory credit sales totaled $518 million in the first quarter, accounting for all of Tesla's profit and then some. This has been the case in previous quarters, as well. In fact, after backing out regulatory credits from Tesla's net income, the company has been unprofitable for six-straight quarters.\nTesla's bottom line got an additional boost in the first quarter from a gain onthe sale ofBitcointo the tune of $101 million, which showed up as a reduction in costs. The picture doesn't look so rosy when both regulatory credits and Bitcoin gains are excluded:\n\nDATA SOURCE: TESLA. CHART BY AUTHOR.\nThere's no question that Tesla's growth is impressive, but there's also no question that the core business of making and selling cars is not turning a profit. The question Tesla investors need to ask themselves is: If Tesla isn't profitable now, when there's little to no competition in electric vehicles in the United States, what's going to happen when a deluge of competition fromtraditional automakersarrives?\nA ton of competition is coming\nTesla's brand has a cult following, so some people will be buying Tesla vehicles regardless of the other options available. But that's not likely to be the case for most people.\nThe number of electric vehicles available for purchase in the U.S. is set to explode in the coming years.General Motors(NYSE:GM)is planning to launch 30 EVs globally by 2025, with two-thirds set to be sold in North America. The company is aiming to sell 1 million EVs annually in North America by 2025.\nThose models include electric versions of the company's GMC Hummer and Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Tesla has a loyal customer base, but so does GM. Someone who's been a GM truck buyer for years is likely to stick with GM when they decide to switch to an electric vehicle.\n\nIMAGE SOURCE: GM.\nFord(NYSE:F)is also pouring resources into electric vehicles, allocating $29 billion for electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. The company's plans include anelectric version of its F-150 pickup truck, which should hit the production lines by mid-2022. Given GM's and Ford's plans, it will not be easy for Tesla to steal away market share in the lucrative pickup-truck segment.\nOther car companies have big plans, as well.Volkswagen(OTC:VWAGY)already sells over 200,000 EVs annually andexpects that number to double this year. The company is aiming to sell roughly 2 million EVs annually by 2025 and expects to launch 70 EV models by 2030.Toyota(NYSE:TM)willlaunch 15 new electric vehicles by 2025, some of which will be under the new Toyota bZ sub-brand. The list goes on.\nNot only will all these electric vehicles provide consumers with a bevy of options beyond Tesla, but they'll also deprive Tesla of its regulatory-credit income as other automakers churn out an increasing number of EVs.\nNone of this is to say that Tesla can't be successful in a world where it faces more competition. Investors","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1171192239","media":"InvestorPlace","summary":"OCGN stock is worth at least 18% more at $8.08 per share based on scenario and probability analysis.","content":"
\n OCGN stock is worth at least 18% more at $8.08 per share based on scenario and probability analysis.\n
\n
Ocugen stock recently fell from a near-term peak of 10.95 on Feb. 26, to about $6.87 as of April 12. But this 37.7% drop isn’t indicative of how well OCGN stock has performed this year.
\n
Ocugen is still up 280% year-to-date and 2,137% (21 times) in the past year. Nevertheless, I calculate that the stock is still worth at least 18% more from its opening price this week, and has a good chance of rising to $8.08 per share.
\n
The recent drop in Ocugen stock could be due to the recent efficacy results of the Covid 19 vaccine, COVAXIN, offered by its Indian partner companyBharat Biotech. The companies have a deal where Ocugen receives 45% of the profits of any COVAXIN sales in the U.S.
\n
COVAXIN was measured at80.6% efficacy in Phase 3 clinical trials in India. The trial involved 25,800 people in a randomized study. The problem is this is much lower than the U.S. vaccines fromModerna(NASDAQ:MRNA) (95% efficacy) andPfizer(NYSE:PFE).
\n
In addition, Ocugen has yet to receive Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) in the U.S., although Bharat Biotech has received this EUA in India. The company is working with U.S. officials to “develop the regulatory pathway to EUA” in the U.S.
\n
On the other hand, the COVAXIN vaccine has shown that it has “significant immunogenicity against emerging strains.” The company says this means its vaccine induces “immune responses against multiple protein antigens of the virus.” Maybe that will lead U.S. authorities to give its vaccine an EUA sometime in the future.
\n
Scenario Analysis of Ocugen’s Value
\n
In mylast article on Ocugen, I came up with both a scenario and probability analysis for the value of OCGN stock. I want to update that here, given the recent news and the stock price action.
\n
Let’s assume that just 5% of people in the U.S. (16.5 million) eventually receive the COVAXIN vaccine and that they take the 2 doses at $25 per dose. This works out to $825 million annually in revenue. Let’s assume 20% goes to overhead so that $660 million is distributable to both Ocugen and Bharat Biotech.
\n
Since Ocugen would receive 45% of that amount, the net payment is $297 million. Let’s say that this continues over 10 years, but that a declining number of people get this over time. Therefore, instead of using a 10 times multiple, we use just a 5 times multiple, or $1.485 billion.
\n
This $1.485 billion is 13.36% above today’s market capitalization of $1.31 billion, implying that OCGN stock is worth $7.79 per share. That is my scenario analysis estimate.
\n
Probability Analysis
\n
Next, let’s use some probability analysis to come up with a price target. Let’s assume there is a good chance, say 40% that OCGN stock could still fall another 20% from here. That means there is an expected return of -8.0% (i.e., 0.40 x -0.20).
\n
However, let’s also assume that there is a good chance, say 40% that the stock could rise 14% (as in our scenario analysis. That gives an estimated return of 5.6% (i.e., 0.14 x 0.14). Finally, let’s assume there is a remaining 20% probability that the stock could rise 100% from here. That provides an estimated return of 20% (i.e., 0.20 x 1.0).
\n
Therefore, since all these probabilities add up to 100%, we can add up the expected returns (ER). The first ER was -8%, the second was 5.6%, and the last was 20%. They add up to a total expected return of 17.6%. But this 37.7% drop isn’t indicative of how well OCGN stock has performed this year.\nOcugen is still up 280% year-to-date and 2,137% (21 times) in the past year. Nevertheless, I calculate that the stock is still worth at least 18% more from its opening price this week, and has a good chance of rising to $8.08 per share.\nThe recent drop in Ocugen stock could be due to the recent efficacy results of the Covid 19 vaccine, COVAXIN, offered by its Indian partner companyBharat Biotech. The companies have a deal where Ocugen receives 45% of the profits of any COVAXIN sales in the U.S.\nCOVAXIN was measured at80.6% efficacy in Phase 3 clinical trials in India. The trial involved 25,800 people in a randomized study. The problem is this is much lower than the U.S. vaccines fromModerna(NASDAQ:MRNA) (95% efficacy) andPfizer(NYSE:PFE).\nIn addition, Ocugen has yet to receive Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) in the U.S., although Bharat Biotech has received this EUA in India. The company is working with U.S. officials to “develop the regulatory pathway to EUA” in the U.S.\nOn the other hand, the COVAXIN vaccine has shown that it has “significant immunogenicity against emerging strains.” The company says this means its vaccine induces “immune responses against multiple protein antigens of the virus.” Maybe that will lead U.S. authorities to give its vaccine an EUA sometime in the future.\nScenario Analysis of Ocugen’s Value\nIn mylast article on Ocugen, I came up with both a scenario and probability analysis for the value of OCGN stock. I want to update that here, given the recent news and the stock price action.\nLet’s assume that just 5% of people in the U.S. (16.5 million) eventually receive the COVAXIN vaccine and that they take the 2 doses at $25 per dose. This works out to $825 million annually in revenue. Let’s assume 20% goes to overhead so that $660 million is distributable to both Ocugen and Bharat Biotech.\nSince Ocugen would receive 45% of that amount, the net payment is $297 million. Let’s say that this continues over 10 years, but that a declining number of people get this over time. Therefore, instead of using a 10 times multiple, we use just a 5 times multiple, or $1.485 billion.\nThis $1.485 billion is 13.36% above today’s market capitalization of $1.31 billion, implying that OCGN stock is worth $7.79 per share. That is my scenario analysis estimate.\nProbability Analysis\nNext, let’s use some probability analysis to come up with a price target. Let’s assume there is a good chance, say 40% that OCGN stock could still fall another 20% from here. That means there is an expected return of -8.0% (i.e., 0.40 x -0.20).\nHowever, let’s also assume that there is a good chance, say 40% that the stock could rise 14% (as in our scenario analysis. That gives an estimated return of 5.6% (i.e., 0.14 x 0.14). Finally, let’s assume there is a remaining 20% probability that the stock could rise 100% from here. That provides an estimated return of 20% (i.e., 0.20 x 1.0).\nTherefore, since all these probabilities add up to 100%, we can add up the expected returns (ER). The first ER was -8%, the second was 5.6%, and the last was 20%. They add up to a total expected return of 17.6%. Thus, we can expect to see OCGN rise to $8.08 (i.e., $6.87 x 1.176).\nThis is a good deal lower than my previous price target of $12.73, but it incorporates more information, including the lower efficacy results. In addition, there is still no clear path to when the EUA for COVAXIN will be seen in the U.S. Therefore, the probability analysis results in a lower stock price target.\nKeep in mind that analysts still have higher expectations for OCGN stock. For example, TipRanks.com reports that 4 analysts that have written on the stock in the last three monthshave an average target of $12.50. That is significantly above today’s price. Nevertheless, I believe that my price target of $8.08, is more conservative.

Rather, these automakers seem to be burdened by structural challenges — including the specific costs associated with scaling up EV operations to evolve and meet the challenges and opportunities of a modern auto marketplace.

(FACTSET)Stock valuation and performance

As you’ve no doubt determined on your own, there are really two different ways to value momentum stocks such as Nio. One involves a reliance on traditional metrics like sales and profitability, while the other is a more aspirational look at where the company could be headed in the future.

From a traditional perspective, Nio is worrisome because it has no profits to speak of. It’s also not exactly a hot stock lately, as shares have drawn back in recent months and are negative for the year so far. However, the shares have gains of more than 900% in the last 12 months.

In fact, for those who call Nio “the next Tesla,” it’s not an entirely unreasonable comparison — and considering Tesla’s three-year and five-year returns despite only recently moving into profitability, that could be music to investors’ ears.

(FACTSET)Wall Street’s opinion

The million-dollar question is whether Nio can keep up both its growth trends and its long-term appeal to investors who aren’t concerned with near-term numbers. Based on its most recent numbers, that trend could still be intact — but it is far from certain.

Analysts aren’t exactly bearish on Nio, with 63% of Wall Street experts rating the stock a buy and the implied 12-month upside on shares a juicy 59% based on consensus price targets.

However, it’s interesting to see that legacy automakers as a group are generally thought of better, with more “buy” ratings even if the upside isn’t as dramatic. Excluding Ford Motor Co.F,+0.68%,both GM and Toyota have better support among the analyst community.

(FACTSET)

The question for Nio investors is pretty simple: Do you want to bank on the less dynamic but more established automakers, or do you want to take on more risk in this Chinese upstart in pursuit of bigger potential gains?
","source":"market_watch","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Opinion: Should you buy Nio stock? That’s particularly true over the last year in what was otherwise a fairly hostile environment for car sales.First, let’s look at operational metrics before we get to the much-followed growth rate in vehicles sold to illustrate how much smaller Nio is than legacy automakers that may be similarly valued by market cap.Assets and cashConsider that GM had $238 billion in assets at the end of 2020. Nio didn’t even have $10 billion! What’s more, lest you think this is all attributed to its extensive manufacturing facilities, over $29 billion of GM’s assets were cold, hard cash.(FACTSET)Sales growthSimilarly, the numbers of vehicles Nio has been selling haven’t even been close to those of larger rivals. The company sold just under 44,000 vehicles last year. That compares with nearly 3.4 million vehicles sold for GM and 10.7 million for Toyota Motor Corp.TM,+0.45%across all its brands.(COMPANY FILINGS)Of course, this lower base means more potential to many investors rather than a reason to be scared away from Nio’s stock. During the first quarter, Nio sold five times as many cars as it did in the same period a year earlier. That growth rate blows the doors off everyone, even Tesla.And just as the total number of vehicles increased dramatically, so naturally did Nio’s top line. But as we will see, that uptick in revenue has yet to translate to significant profits.Pricing power and profitabilityThe rapid expansion of vehicle sales naturally has resulted in soaring revenue. However, the Chinese EV upstart continues to operate at a loss.Gross margins have admittedly improved, but profit forecasts for fiscal 2022 are still negative for Nio. And more importantly, when you look at peers including legacy automakers, it doesn’t appear realistic that Nio could see outsized improvement from its current gross margins that are in-line with the rest of the industry. That means as it continues to invest heavily in future growth, investors may have to make their peace with the fact that the company is trading current profit potential for that vision.(FACTSET)Free cash flowFree cash flow is another area where Nio has a bit of work to do, particularly if it wants to win over investors who care about this metric, which measures how much money is on hand at a company after it pays the bills for regular operations. Based on the last 12 months, free cash flow has firmed up but is still barely out of the red.However, as a smaller company that is scaling up rapidly, it is reasonable to expect this kind of gap between Nio and its more mature peers as it comes into its own. By contrast, established firms like GM and Toyota that saw serious cash flow concerns over the last year don’t have the same excuse. Rather, these automakers seem to be burdened by structural challenges — including the specific costs associated with scaling up EV operations to evolve and meet the challenges and opportunities of a modern auto marketplace.(FACTSET)Stock valuation and performanceAs you’ve no doubt determined on your own, there are really two different ways to value momentum stocks such as Nio. One involves a reliance on traditional metrics like sales and profitability, while the other is a more aspirational look at where the company could be headed in the future.From a traditional perspective, Nio is worrisome because it has no profits to speak of. It’s also not exactly a hot stock lately, as shares have drawn back in recent months and are negative for the year so far. However, the shares have gains of more than 900% in the last 12 months.In fact, for those who call Nio “the next Tesla,” it’s not an entirely unreasonable comparison — and considering Tesla’s three-year and five-year returns despite only recently moving into profitability, that could be music to investors’ ears.(FACTSET)Wall Street’s opinionThe million-dollar question is whether Nio can keep up both its growth trends and its long-term appeal to investors who aren’t concerned with near-term numbers. Based on its most recent numbers, that trend could still be intact — but it is far from certain.Analysts aren’t exactly bearish on Nio, with 63% of Wall Street experts rating the stock a buy and the implied 12-month upside on shares a juicy 59% based on consensus price targets.However, it’s interesting to see that legacy automakers as a group are generally thought of better, with more “buy” ratings even if the upside isn’t as dramatic. Excluding Ford Motor Co.F,+0.68%,both GM and Toyota have better support among the analyst community.(FACTSET)The question for Nio investors is pretty simple: Do you want to bank on the less dynamic but more established automakers, or do you want to take on more risk in this Chinese upstart in pursuit of bigger potential gains?","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":586,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
