Is there anything that makes one of them a better buy than the other today?</p><p>There&#39;s a lot to analyze here, so let&#39;s roll up our sleeves and get to work.</p><h2>Amazon is muddling through tough conditions</h2><p>Both Amazon and Disney have enjoyed fabulous growth over many decades, benefiting immensely under favorable market conditions. They both stand out in that way, having leveraged a positive economic climate to grow their businesses and leave rivals in the dust.</p><p>Amazon got a big boost at the beginning of the pandemic, when all of its units flourished. Now, it&#39;s struggling to match those incredible numbers, winding down infrastructure it quickly built up to meet soaring demand and managing through increased costs.</p><p>In the 2022 fourth quarter, revenue increased 9% over the prior year, which beat internal guidance. But the past few quarters have seen a huge slowdown, and even Amazon Web Services (AWS), which has been a reliable generator of high growth, has been decelerating. Q4 AWS sales increased 20% over the prior year, whereas up until now year-over-year sales have increased 30%.</p><p>In 2022, Amazon also posted its first annual net loss since 2014. Much of that was due to its investment in <b>Rivian Automotive</b>, but even backing that out and looking at operating income, that fell from $24.9 billion last year to $12.2 billion in 2022.</p><h2>Disney is getting back on its feet</h2><p>Disney, on the other hand, was severely impacted at the beginning of the pandemic because it had to close down all of its parks and in-person experiences, which at the time comprised its biggest segment. Revenue literally came down to $0 for some time from certain activities. However, it was somewhat offset by the newly launched Disney+ streaming service, which demonstrated incredible growth.</p><p>Now parks have reopened to a fantastic reception, and management has been able to raise prices because demand is so strong. At the same time, streaming growth has slowed, and subscriptions actually declined year over year in the first quarter of fiscal 2023 (ended Dec. 31). Revenue increased a tepid 8% over last year in the first quarter.</p><p>Losses at Disney+ have been making investors nervous, and already at the end of the fourth quarter management had said it would begin slowing spending. The increase in streaming losses in the first quarter was narrower than in the previous quarter, but there&#39;s still a lot of work to do there. Management reiterated that it expects Disney+ to be profitable by the end of 2024.</p><p>Still, Disney&#39;s overall operating margin is a lot better than Amazon&#39;s, both in the current environment and even more so when the economy is doing well.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/795cd0a435a5e23a42ff85e420ca2a11\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"449\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>AMZN Operating Margin (Quarterly) data by YCharts</p><p>Amazon had a very smooth CEO transition last year when Jeff Bezos handed over the reins to Andy Jassy, but Disney has experienced a dramatic CEO change as the board removed Bob Chapek and reinstated Bob Iger. He has already made sweeping changes, and the market is receiving his return very favorably. However, there&#39;s some built-in volatility because he&#39;s only back in the driver&#39;s seat for a two-year run.</p><h2>Tremendous future opportunities</h2><p>Despite the current pressure, both of these companies are well-seasoned in how to grow profitably, and they both have plenty of new products and services to keep their cash registers ringing.</p><p>Amazon is launching an entirely new healthcare platform after acquiring One Medical last year, and its ad business continues to grow nicely. Amazon Prime continues to generate healthy sales and gain new members. The company is also making headway with its just-walk-out, cashierless technology, which it&#39;s using successfully in its own physical stores and is also licensing out to clients. There doesn&#39;t seem to be any industry that&#39;s off limits to management&#39;s thinking.</p><p>Meanwhile, Disney is pumping out new content, both on its streaming platforms and in theaters. <i>Avatar: The Way of Water </i>was released in December and has already worked its way up to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in history.</p><p>Marvel has been a huge asset since Disney acquired it in 2009, under Iger&#39;s direction, and accounted for three of the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2022. Marvel has three movies scheduled for release in 2023 and a film slate straight through 2026 in addition to streaming content.</p><p>Iger mentioned that Disney&#39;s studios are also working on new sequels to <i>Toy Story</i>, <i>Frozen</i>, and <i>Zootopia</i>, and these kinds of franchises give Disney almost endless opportunities to expand sales.</p><h2>Where does valuation fit in?</h2><p>Amazon stock trades at a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 1.9, while Disney stock trades at 2.3 times sales. When investors are more cautious, they tend to price stocks more firmly in line with current performance. Both of these stocks look cheap today when compared with both historical trends as well as potential.</p><h2>Which stock is the better buy?</h2><p>The contest looks pretty close here. Both companies are industry leaders with long-term potential that are experiencing pressure in the current climate. They demonstrated almost the same amount of revenue growth in the most recent quarter, although for Disney it topped $23 billion and for Amazon it topped $149 billion.</p><p>If I had to choose one, I would say Amazon is more of a sure thing because of its steady Prime and AWS businesses, and its ability to dominate different industries. But if you&#39;re looking to add a long-term winner to your portfolio, either of these will do. Is there anything that makes one of them a better buy than the other today?There's a lot to analyze here, so let's roll up our sleeves and get to work.Amazon is muddling through tough conditionsBoth Amazon and Disney have enjoyed fabulous growth over many decades, benefiting immensely under favorable market conditions. They both stand out in that way, having leveraged a positive economic climate to grow their businesses and leave rivals in the dust.Amazon got a big boost at the beginning of the pandemic, when all of its units flourished. Now, it's struggling to match those incredible numbers, winding down infrastructure it quickly built up to meet soaring demand and managing through increased costs.In the 2022 fourth quarter, revenue increased 9% over the prior year, which beat internal guidance. But the past few quarters have seen a huge slowdown, and even Amazon Web Services (AWS), which has been a reliable generator of high growth, has been decelerating. Q4 AWS sales increased 20% over the prior year, whereas up until now year-over-year sales have increased 30%.In 2022, Amazon also posted its first annual net loss since 2014. Much of that was due to its investment in Rivian Automotive, but even backing that out and looking at operating income, that fell from $24.9 billion last year to $12.2 billion in 2022.Disney is getting back on its feetDisney, on the other hand, was severely impacted at the beginning of the pandemic because it had to close down all of its parks and in-person experiences, which at the time comprised its biggest segment. Revenue literally came down to $0 for some time from certain activities. However, it was somewhat offset by the newly launched Disney+ streaming service, which demonstrated incredible growth.Now parks have reopened to a fantastic reception, and management has been able to raise prices because demand is so strong. At the same time, streaming growth has slowed, and subscriptions actually declined year over year in the first quarter of fiscal 2023 (ended Dec. 31). Revenue increased a tepid 8% over last year in the first quarter.Losses at Disney+ have been making investors nervous, and already at the end of the fourth quarter management had said it would begin slowing spending. The increase in streaming losses in the first quarter was narrower than in the previous quarter, but there's still a lot of work to do there. Management reiterated that it expects Disney+ to be profitable by the end of 2024.Still, Disney's overall operating margin is a lot better than Amazon's, both in the current environment and even more so when the economy is doing well.AMZN Operating Margin (Quarterly) data by YChartsAmazon had a very smooth CEO transition last year when Jeff Bezos handed over the reins to Andy Jassy, but Disney has experienced a dramatic CEO change as the board removed Bob Chapek and reinstated Bob Iger. He has already made sweeping changes, and the market is receiving his return very favorably. However, there's some built-in volatility because he's only back in the driver's seat for a two-year run.Tremendous future opportunitiesDespite the current pressure, both of these companies are well-seasoned in how to grow profitably, and they both have plenty of new products and services to keep their cash registers ringing.Amazon is launching an entirely new healthcare platform after acquiring One Medical last year, and its ad business continues to grow nicely. Amazon Prime continues to generate healthy sales and gain new members. The company is also making headway with its just-walk-out, cashierless technology, which it's using successfully in its own physical stores and is also licensing out to clients. There doesn't seem to be any industry that's off limits to management's thinking.Meanwhile, Disney is pumping out new content, both on its streaming platforms and in theaters. Avatar: The Way of Water was released in December and has already worked its way up to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in history.Marvel has been a huge asset since Disney acquired it in 2009, under Iger's direction, and accounted for three of the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2022. Marvel has three movies scheduled for release in 2023 and a film slate straight through 2026 in addition to streaming content.Iger mentioned that Disney's studios are also working on new sequels to Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia, and these kinds of franchises give Disney almost endless opportunities to expand sales.Where does valuation fit in?Amazon stock trades at a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 1.9, while Disney stock trades at 2.3 times sales. Both of these are low valuations for companies that have strong potential.AMZN PS Ratio data by YChartsSomething I would note about this chart is that both P/S ratios have been moving in tandem over the past year, even though they weren't in previous years. When investors are more cautious, they tend to price stocks more firmly in line with current performance. Both of these stocks look cheap today when compared with both historical trends as well as potential.Which stock is the better buy?The contest looks pretty close here. Both companies are industry leaders with long-term potential that are experiencing pressure in the current climate. They demonstrated almost the same amount of revenue growth in the most recent quarter, although for Disney it topped $23 billion and for Amazon it topped $149 billion.If I had to choose one, I would say Amazon is more of a sure thing because of its steady Prime and AWS businesses, and its ability to dominate different industries. But if you're looking to add a long-term winner to your portfolio, either of these will do. I do believe that there is a high likelihood that Alibaba will outperform Amazon in the foreseeable future, due to a range of reasons. Alibaba is less impacted by inflation, benefits from a stronger consumer in China, trades at a way lower valuation, and Alibaba&#39;s cash returns to shareholders are more meaningful as well.</p><p><b>The Inflation Impact On BABA And AMZN</b></p><p>Earnings estimates for Amazon have dropped dramatically in recent months, as can be seen in the following chart from Seeking Alpha:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7465dd00b73b3954390c3a8854a8edb0\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"300\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Seeking Alpha</p><p>Earnings per share estimates for the current quarter have dropped more than 70% over the last three months, while EPS estimates for the following four quarters also dropped by 25% to 40%. A huge factor for that is the impact of inflation Amazon is currently dealing with. Since the company handles logistics itself, it is heavily impacted by higher fees for seaborne transportation and trucking. Higher wages due to employees demanding inflation compensation also lead to higher expenses at Amazon. This was already visible in the company&#39;s Q1 results, with operating income dropping more than 50% year over year due to these cost pressures. Alibaba is way more insulated from inflation, due to two core reasons. First, it does not handle logistics itself and has fewer employees. Due to it being a platform provider, it does not have to pay more for shipping or storage and is not impacted by higher diesel prices, and so on. Second, inflation is much less of a problem in China versus the US and Europe, Amazon&#39;s two biggest markets:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7549961f1639ff313376250b66c15aca\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"450\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>With inflation in China running at a steady 2% rate, whereas inflation in Europe and the US has exploded towards more than 8%, cost pressures naturally are way less pronounced for Alibaba. With the combination of lower inflationary pressures overall, and a more insulated, inflation-proof business model, Alibaba is poised to handle inflation way better than Amazon.</p><p><b>The Chinese Consumer Versus The American Consumer</b></p><p>Both companies do not operate in one market only, but both companies are highly dependent on one single market. In BABA&#39;s case, that&#39;s China, whereas Amazon is heavily exposed to the US market despite being active in many other countries on top of that. American consumers have, on average, more income and more spending power than Chinese consumers. But that is easily outweighed by the fact that there are many more Chinese consumers than US-based ones. And, importantly, the rate of change is highly in favor of the Chinese consumer market. China&#39;s middle class has added several hundred million in recent years, and personal income and average wealth are growing rapidly in China.</p><p>Due to high inflation rates, costly energy, and weak economic growth (Q1 GDP growth was negative, and Q2 GDP growth might also be negative according to GDPNow estimates), the US consumer is not in a good position right now. On top of that, a rapid rise in mortgage rates further pressures disposable income. The combination of these factors has led to a massive crash in US consumer sentiment, down below levels seen during the Great Recession and the pandemic:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88335757584b514b4b5057167f61dd1c\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>In fact, US consumer sentiment is comparably weak to levels seen during the high-inflation environment in the early 1980s. Real disposable income has also waned in recent quarters, as fiscal stimulus has been pulled back and since inflation is taking a toll on Americans&#39; spending power. In that environment, a company that primarily sells discretionary consumer goods will not do too well, which is why Amazon is facing considerable demand headwinds this year.</p><p>With inflation being less of a problem in China, and with mortgage rates not rising as much there, the Chinese consumer is in a better position right now. Combined with the already higher GDP growth in China, this means that Alibaba is exposed to a stronger consumer story for now, which should be a tailwind for the company. During the most recent quarter, real revenue growth, i.e. adjusted for the rate of inflation in the two countries, was stronger for Alibaba, compared to Amazon. The same could hold true in the remainder of the year, especially with Alibaba likely benefitting from reopening tailwinds in China as lockdowns in Shanghai and other cities are being eased.</p><p><b>Alibaba&#39;s And Amazon&#39;s Valuation</b></p><p>Everything has its price, and in Amazon&#39;s case, that price is massively higher than what one has to pay for Alibaba.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3f692dc12a7c82a448dd495a058d9df9\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"481\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Amazon is trading for 130x this year&#39;s profit right now, while BABA is trading at around one-eighth of that, or 15x net profits. In other words, Amazon is trading with an earnings yield of less than 0.8%, while BABA&#39;s owners get an earnings yield of around 6.5%. But when Alibaba, which produces more than $22 billion in free cash a year is valued at just $310 billion, while Amazon, which burned $18 billion over the last year is valued at more than $1 trillion, that should give investors pause. From a valuation perspective, BABA has considerable upside potential, while Amazon could have considerable downside potential. A rise in BABA&#39;s free cash flow multiple to 18, which wouldn&#39;t be high, would allow for returns of around 30% from current levels, for example.</p><p><b>Alibaba&#39;s Shareholder Returns Are More Attractive</b></p><p>Alibaba is generating way more cash than Amazon, which is actually burning it. This gives Alibaba the ability to return more cash to its owners relative to the size of the company. Alibaba currently is utilizing a share repurchase program worth $25 billion, which covers around 8% of the company&#39;s market capitalization. With free cash flow standing at $22 billion over the last four quarters, Alibaba could use up this authorization rather quickly, which would result in a major decline in its share count.</p><p>Amazon is currently operating with a $10 billion share repurchase program. That&#39;s less than 1% of the company&#39;s market capitalization, thus even when fully utilized, it would only create a small dent in the company&#39;s share count. On top of that, due to negative free cash flow, it seems doubtful whether Amazon will really push through this program, which would weaken its balance sheet further.</p><p>BABA&#39;s buyback program should be way more accretive from an earnings per share and free cash flow per share perspective, as it will reduce the share count more meaningfully. On top of that, its stronger buyback pace could help put a floor under its share price going forward. Amazon, with its comparatively small buyback program, will likely not benefit from such a &#34;floor effect&#34;.</p><p><b>Risks To Consider</b></p><p>From a cost pressure, consumer strength, valuation, and shareholder return perspective, BABA seems poised to outperform AMZN going forward. That being said, politics is a risk to consider when going long Alibaba. I do not believe that it is in China&#39;s best interest to hurt its tech players too much, but regulators could still employ rules that hurt Alibaba&#39;s profitability. At the current valuation, that seems to be accounted for to some degree, but investors should keep an eye on this risk factor nevertheless.</p><p>For those investors that consider shorting Amazon, it is important to note that shorting always comes with risk. If Amazon were to roll out a new feature that is highly attractive or make a great acquisition, that could lead to a share price increase. If equity markets recover from their recent drop, Amazon would likely rise as well, thereby leading to losses for those that shorted it. If Amazon&#39;s AWS were to experience accelerating growth, that could also lead to a rising share price. Since companies are likely not investing heavily in the current recession-prone environment, I do not believe that AWS growth will be overly strong in the coming quarters, however.</p><p>Amazon is not a widely-shorted stock, thus borrowing shares is rather easy. Short interest is around 1.2% according to Seeking Alpha, and according to my broker, the borrowing fee is less than 0.3% right now.</p><p><b>Takeaway</b></p><p>I do believe that there is a high likelihood for Alibaba to outperform Amazon in the foreseeable future. Its valuation is way more attractive, and inflation and a potential recession in the US and Europe are way more of a headwind for Amazon compared to Alibaba, which is pretty insulated from those macro risks. Combine this with Alibaba&#39;s hefty buyback program that should support its shares, and I don&#39;t see good reasons for Amazon performing as good as, or better than, Alibaba. Alibaba is less impacted by inflation, benefits from a stronger consumer in China, trades at a way lower valuation, and Alibaba's cash returns to shareholders are more meaningful as well.The Inflation Impact On BABA And AMZNEarnings estimates for Amazon have dropped dramatically in recent months, as can be seen in the following chart from Seeking Alpha:Seeking AlphaEarnings per share estimates for the current quarter have dropped more than 70% over the last three months, while EPS estimates for the following four quarters also dropped by 25% to 40%. A huge factor for that is the impact of inflation Amazon is currently dealing with. Since the company handles logistics itself, it is heavily impacted by higher fees for seaborne transportation and trucking. Higher wages due to employees demanding inflation compensation also lead to higher expenses at Amazon. This was already visible in the company's Q1 results, with operating income dropping more than 50% year over year due to these cost pressures. Alibaba is way more insulated from inflation, due to two core reasons. First, it does not handle logistics itself and has fewer employees. Due to it being a platform provider, it does not have to pay more for shipping or storage and is not impacted by higher diesel prices, and so on. Second, inflation is much less of a problem in China versus the US and Europe, Amazon's two biggest markets:With inflation in China running at a steady 2% rate, whereas inflation in Europe and the US has exploded towards more than 8%, cost pressures naturally are way less pronounced for Alibaba. With the combination of lower inflationary pressures overall, and a more insulated, inflation-proof business model, Alibaba is poised to handle inflation way better than Amazon.The Chinese Consumer Versus The American ConsumerBoth companies do not operate in one market only, but both companies are highly dependent on one single market. In BABA's case, that's China, whereas Amazon is heavily exposed to the US market despite being active in many other countries on top of that. American consumers have, on average, more income and more spending power than Chinese consumers. But that is easily outweighed by the fact that there are many more Chinese consumers than US-based ones. And, importantly, the rate of change is highly in favor of the Chinese consumer market. China's middle class has added several hundred million in recent years, and personal income and average wealth are growing rapidly in China.Due to high inflation rates, costly energy, and weak economic growth (Q1 GDP growth was negative, and Q2 GDP growth might also be negative according to GDPNow estimates), the US consumer is not in a good position right now. On top of that, a rapid rise in mortgage rates further pressures disposable income. The combination of these factors has led to a massive crash in US consumer sentiment, down below levels seen during the Great Recession and the pandemic:In fact, US consumer sentiment is comparably weak to levels seen during the high-inflation environment in the early 1980s. Real disposable income has also waned in recent quarters, as fiscal stimulus has been pulled back and since inflation is taking a toll on Americans' spending power. In that environment, a company that primarily sells discretionary consumer goods will not do too well, which is why Amazon is facing considerable demand headwinds this year.With inflation being less of a problem in China, and with mortgage rates not rising as much there, the Chinese consumer is in a better position right now. Combined with the already higher GDP growth in China, this means that Alibaba is exposed to a stronger consumer story for now, which should be a tailwind for the company. During the most recent quarter, real revenue growth, i.e. adjusted for the rate of inflation in the two countries, was stronger for Alibaba, compared to Amazon. The same could hold true in the remainder of the year, especially with Alibaba likely benefitting from reopening tailwinds in China as lockdowns in Shanghai and other cities are being eased.Alibaba's And Amazon's ValuationEverything has its price, and in Amazon's case, that price is massively higher than what one has to pay for Alibaba.Amazon is trading for 130x this year's profit right now, while BABA is trading at around one-eighth of that, or 15x net profits. In other words, Amazon is trading with an earnings yield of less than 0.8%, while BABA's owners get an earnings yield of around 6.5%. Plus the company is forecasting slower overall revenue growth for the second quarter.</p><p>However, it’s unclear whether investors are factoring in two recently announced contracts. First, the company announced a10 million-pound ($12.5 million) contract with the U.K. Ministry of Defence. And the company also inked a5-year, $90-million blanket purchase agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).</p><p>It’s fair to note that Palantir missed on earnings. And this does nothing to satisfy investors who are concerned that Palantir may find it difficult to generate meaningful earnings. The root of this concern is that the data analytics company faces too much competition to capture significantly higher market share than it already has.</p><p>Still, Palantir has a consensus price target of $14.31, an 85% gain from the stock’s current price. It’s also over 40% lower than the consensus price target from a year ago. Plus, the lower the stock goes, the more it starts to look appealing from a fundamental perspective. And that means that PLTR stock looks like it will be a solid buy at some point. But with investor sentiment at all-time bearish levels, that day is not today.The more interesting question for me is what more does Palantir have to do to please investors? Upon going public, a key concern of investors was the company’s reliance on its government contracts. But in its most recent earnings report, Palantir showed a 54% year-over-year (YOY) increase in sales on the commercial side of its business. Overall revenue was up 31% YOY, which was slightly ahead of analysts’ expectations.Ironically, it’s slower growth in the company’s government-related revenue that is causing angst for investors post earnings. Palantir reported that vertical only saw a 16% YOY revenue increase. Plus the company is forecasting slower overall revenue growth for the second quarter.However, it’s unclear whether investors are factoring in two recently announced contracts. First, the company announced a10 million-pound ($12.5 million) contract with the U.K. Ministry of Defence. And the company also inked a5-year, $90-million blanket purchase agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).It’s fair to note that Palantir missed on earnings. And this does nothing to satisfy investors who are concerned that Palantir may find it difficult to generate meaningful earnings. The root of this concern is that the data analytics company faces too much competition to capture significantly higher market share than it already has.Still, Palantir has a consensus price target of $14.31, an 85% gain from the stock’s current price. It’s also over 40% lower than the consensus price target from a year ago. He added that many of his investments were typically “forced up to quite an unreasonable level and then, for the most part, collapse.”</p>\n<p>Marx’s trading stories are difficult to substantiate, but millennials’ love of meme stocks is very real. I’ve already made more this year from trading meme stocks and cryptocurrency than I have as a professional writer. I’ve come to look at the meme stock boom as millennials’ chance to finally build wealth. But if not, we’re content with making the investors largely responsible for our financial woes feel a bit of the pain they’ve inflicted on us. Short-sellers are losing their shirts to the tune of$4.5 billion&nbsp;on meme stocks so far.</p>\n<p>As a 34-year-old American, almost every generational stereotype applies to me. HuffPost’s Michael Hobbessummed up&nbsp;millennials’ financial situation best in 2017: “My rent consumes nearly half my income, I haven’t had a steady job since Pluto was a planet and my savings are dwindling faster than the ice caps the baby boomers melted.”</p>\n<p>Perhaps because we’re the only American generation to live through two major recessions and two wars in our coming-up years, we’re the first generation to be financially worse off than our parents, despite being&nbsp;better educated&nbsp;on average. We paid for it, too. A year of college that cost $10,000 for boomers set millennials back more than $15,000 on average in inflation-adjusted dollars, according to&nbsp;Bloomberg. Millennials of color, particularly Black millennials, have it worse. They graduated with&nbsp;even more student debt&nbsp;than their white classmates, are&nbsp;far less likely&nbsp;to be hired in white-collar professions, and their households earn&nbsp;just 60%of what their white coworkers make.</p>\n<p>Millennials’ high-priced educations haven’t bought us much job security. A 2018 Gallup study&nbsp;called&nbsp;millennials the “job-hopping generation.” Maybe, but not by choice. A 2019University of Chicago study&nbsp;found millennials actually long for a stable career. It should come as little surprise, then, that a generation plagued with job insecurity and mounting debt is leading the“baby bust.”The birth rate is at its lowest in&nbsp;three decades. There may not be enough working-age Americans to care for the nation’s swelling senior population. Boomers effectively climbed the class ladder, then took a saw and cut off the rungs below them. (And they still ask us when we’ll give them grandchildren!)</p>\n<p>If all that doesn’t make meme stocks and cryptocurrency more appealing, at least it might help explain why some of us just don’t care any more about playing it safe. I’ll be the first to admit that investing in meme stocks isn’t a sustainable way to build wealth. A lot more of us will get hurt than get rich. But I’m not primarily investing to make money: I want the investors who crashed the economy and got bailed out in my senior year of college—thus&nbsp;torpedoing&nbsp;my career earning potential—to feel at least a little bit of the hardship they put my generation through. And given the&nbsp;predominantly millennial&nbsp;composition of /r/WallStreetBets, I know I’m not the only rage-driven investor.</p>\n<p>There’s plenty to be mad about. Like we saw with&nbsp;GameStop,workers organizing to make the stock market pay out in our favor results in strict blowback. After Redditors speculated GameStop shares through the roof in late January, mobile trading app Robinhood not only restricted trading, but even&nbsp;reportedly&nbsp;sold investors’ GameStop shares without their consent. (Robinhooddeniesforced-selling occurred.) When it came to light that Robinhood had a&nbsp;financial relationship&nbsp;with firms that help route its customers’ orders, it made a lot of newbie investors like me even more jaded about the markets.</p>\n<p>In March, when New York City opened movie theaters, I decided to buy AMC shares on a lark for $7 apiece. As of early June, my investment has appreciated in value by more than 550%. That could evaporate, but I’m taking a lesson from GameStop. Its stock is still trading at more than $250 per share despite starting the year under $20. I plan on continuing to hold my AMC shares in hopes the value will increase even more. When it’s finally time, I’ll sell half and re-invest my profits in cryptocurrency.</p>\n<p>When that happens, I’ll be far from the only millennial betting big on crypto. According to Business Insider, my generation is&nbsp;chiefly responsible&nbsp;for the sudden rise of cryptocurrency in 2021, in which both blue-chip digital currencies like Ethereum, as well as joke cryptocurrencies like Dogecoin, are thriving. Ethereum’s price has gone from $730.97 per coin on Jan. 1 to a peak of over $4,000 in May. Dogecoin has&nbsp;appreciatedby more than 21,000% since its inception as a meme in 2013. (I’m still kicking myself for selling my Dogecoin when it was trading for less than 10 cents, even though I still made thousands in profit). Millennials’ commitment to crypto is now forcing the giants to play along: In March,Morgan Stanley&nbsp;became the&nbsp;first bank&nbsp;to offer Bitcoin funds to its wealthy clients. And as if on cue, now that the workers have made a little money in the rigged casino, U.S. regulators are reportedly preparing a “crackdown” on cryptocurrency.</p>\n<p>Millennials went through childhood being told we had to work hard to have financial security. Then we were told we had to shackle ourselves with debt to get a college degree that would get us a good job. Then we were told that only a lucky few actually build wealth from their jobs and that to have true financial success, we should invest. And then when we invested, we were told we were doing it wrong. I get the message. Millennials aren’t meant to win. Financial security isn’t for us. After Redditors speculated GameStop shares through the roof in late January, mobile trading app Robinhood not only restricted trading, but even reportedly sold investors’ GameStop shares without their consent. (Robinhooddeniesforced-selling occurred.) When it came to light that Robinhood had a financial relationship with firms that help route its customers’ orders, it made a lot of newbie investors like me even more jaded about the markets.\nIn March, when New York City opened movie theaters, I decided to buy AMC shares on a lark for $7 apiece. As of early June, my investment has appreciated in value by more than 550%. That could evaporate, but I’m taking a lesson from GameStop. Its stock is still trading at more than $250 per share despite starting the year under $20. I plan on continuing to hold my AMC shares in hopes the value will increase even more. Ethereum’s price has gone from $730.97 per coin on Jan. 1 to a peak of over $4,000 in May. Dogecoin has appreciatedby more than 21,000% since its inception as a meme in 2013. (I’m still kicking myself for selling my Dogecoin when it was trading for less than 10 cents, even though I still made thousands in profit). Millennials’ commitment to crypto is now forcing the giants to play along: In March,Morgan Stanley became the first bank to offer Bitcoin funds to its wealthy clients. And as if on cue, now that the workers have made a little money in the rigged casino, U.S. regulators are reportedly preparing a “crackdown” on cryptocurrency.\nMillennials went through childhood being told we had to work hard to have financial security. Then we were told we had to shackle ourselves with debt to get a college degree that would get us a good job. Then we were told that only a lucky few actually build wealth from their jobs and that to have true financial success, we should invest. And then when we invested, we were told we were doing it wrong. I get the message. Millennials aren’t meant to win. Financial security isn’t for us.
